It's exactly the same bullshit arguments that record labels, book publishers, and movie studios tried to sold the public when the people started massively sharing digital files of copyrighted works between them. The people who made these statements don't know absolutely anything about digital economics and intellectual property law. AI and LLMs democratize the ability of the public to create transformative works based on their prompts. If the output is entirely identical to the original, then there may be a problem. In any case, this is bullshit and only demented people who don't know a think about how economics works for digital goods can say these things. I'm sick and tired of all this rage-baiting bullshit. Why can't people use technologies with a critical lens? To conclude: Anyone who venerates human labour is absolutely clueless. What we should value is FREE TIME and critical thinking.

Given that MS has other business besides AI, they have an incentive to put reasonable guardrails in place on their AI products, so blowback from their AI products doesn't endanger their other revenue streams.

No, I mean by, erm... Things like hacking the power grid and such... Which would also presumably cause it to cease existing... Which wouldn't exactly be superintelligent.

How will we ever stop it?!

I mean, it's not like we live in a world where less intelligent creatures and even inanimate objects kill off more intelligent creatures every day.

It's not like we live in a world where virii and microbes and bricks can kill off more intelligent creatures.

Brains beat brawn every time!

Put a statistician in a fight with an MMA champion and clearly the maths professor is going to win, right?

And if that doesn't sound true when it's phrased like that, then you need to just shush for a moment and pretend that it does.

And if one of our LLMs in a massive hyperscale AI data centre somehow magically became sentient, it's not like we could just shut off the water. Or the electricity. Or stop delivering massive quantities of gas and oil to the onsite gas turbines.

Or just find the nearest Telstra pit and put a bloody shovel through the fibre optic cables that connect it to the outside world.

So we need to immediately figure out ways to stop this happening!

What's that?

You say we could prevent this happening by just not building the massive AI data centres?

You say we could tax the rich so they don't have the money to build massive AI data centres?

No! We absolutely must not do that under any circumstances!

See, our position is really quite straightforward.

We're claiming our product poses an existential risk to humanity that justifies urgent action to mitigate the risk, but also simultaneously we don't want you to think it /genuinely/ poses an existential risk to humanity that /actually/ justifies urgent action that would be guaranteed mitigate the risk, such as not building massive AI data centres, or by not providing access to the ginormous quantities of water and land and energy and capital that our product which is causing this supposed threat depends on.

So why say it?

Mostly, because if we say things like: "We can make a product that could make massive monopolistic short-term profits in a few years, but there's a 10% chance it kills everyone alive, give us money to build it," then the Silicon Valley VCs and Wall Street bankers will throw literal billions our way.

Whereas if we were to say: "We can make a product that solves a genuine problem and we have a sustainable business model for it that will deliver stable long-term returns," then they won't.

Because under American capitalism, "a chance it kills every person" is seen to be a worthwhile risk to take in exchange for short-term profits.

I really hope that clarifies our argument.

Nope! The version history opens in #Microsoft #SharePoint, and SharePoint does not support downloading old file versions; all you can do is restore the old version as the current one. So for me to get to that old version, I have to:

1. Make a copy of the current version.
2. Restore the old version I want to see.
3. Copy the restored old version somewhere for safekeeping.
4. Restore the current version from the version history.
5. Delete the restored old version from the version history.

Ein NoGo, dass #Microsoft damit das sichere Booten für #Linux Systeme in der Hand hat. Wenn Microsoft sich entschließt morgen keine Linux Bootloader mehr zu zertifizieren, können die nicht mehr mit #UEFI gebootet werden. Man kann das abschalten, kein Problem. Aber hier geht es um das Prinzip. Mit Schuld sind die PC Hersteller, die nur MS Zertifikate im BIOS installieren. Auf neueren PCs teilweise sogar nur die neueren von 2023 und nicht mehr die Alten von 2011, was dann zur Folge hat, das alte Kernels nicht mehr booten.

Ich würde mal sagen das System ist „broken by design“
Linux muss einen Weg finden sich hier aus der Geiselhaft von Microsoft zu befreien. Und die PC Hersteller sind ein Schlüssel dazu. Aber die haben wahrscheinlich alle die Hosen voll, weil sie, wenn sie das unterstützen, Repressalien von Microsoft befürchten müssen.
Das ist auch der Grund, warum so gut wie jeder neue Rechner mit MS Lizenz ausgeliefert wird und der Käufer kämpfen muss das zurück erstattet zu bekommen.

Who in the world thought it should be ok to automatically install "apps" in the background when you plug a device in? Basic device drivers, such as the .inf file, for the device to function? Sure. Benieuwd of de urgentie nu eindelijk ook een beetje gaat doordringen bij alle Nederlandse overheden die nog met handen en voeten aan Microsoft 365 contracten gebonden zitten.
Als je nu nog moet gaan nadenken over exit strategieën, ben je 2 jaar te laat.

(Ik vind het nog steeds bizar dat de gemeente Alkmaar vorig jaar oktober nog een langjarig contract met Microsoft afgesloten heeft voor E5 licenties inclusief Co-Pilot. 🤦🏼‍♀️)
