Nextcloud is disappointing at large.

Useful as a Google Cloud replacement? For sure - calendar, cookbook app (which I use extensively), this and that.
With all that good though comes a strong vibe of Linux from the 90s, or Windows Update Services.
This is to say, for the fourth time in the last 35 days update failed automatically, service is stuck in the maintenance mode and I need to waste time unfucking it.
Time to look for a replacement, I really don't have time for this shit.

Le choix de whatsapp est un non choix, une sorte d'évidence car une grande majorité des gens sont dessus.

Et les individualités qui ne souhaitent ou même ne peuvent pas doivent se taire ou bien forcer les autres à utiliser des outils additionnels et alternatif qui évidemment nécessitent un effort.

Chacun a le droit d'avoir ses préférences, c'est quand on veut assoir tout le monde à la même table que cela devient amusant.

Le problème est le silo, la fédération est une solution : mais comment jouer la fédération avec des sociétés qui n'en veulent pas.

My #Nextcloud server got 35.0.1 advertised today. 35 (26 Summer) was released back on the 16th. One interesting change with this one is that the admin page now makes additional recommendations for database optimizations to help speed things up besides just "add-missing-indices".

I was excited about #NextCloud before, but that feeling is gone. For me it feels like it became the #WordPress of document sharing and calendar. The application is slowish, megabytes of data just to load a simple page, weak caching, plugins that are messy in its own.

Sorry for being negative, as I really like #opensource, but dislike applications that become too big and become Microsoft-alike 😬

Mon fournisseur de mail est bloqué au boulot, et comme c’est #protonmail et que je n’ai toujours pas trouvé le temps de changer, je cherche une solution.

Je voudrais donc #selfhost un client mail web. Mais je ne connais pas ceux qui sont recommandés ?

J’ai d’abord pensé que c’était l’occasion de me selfhost #nextcloud mais protonmail, donc il faut protonmail bridge pour utiliser un autre client mail. Et nextcloud c’est en docker, pas le bridge. C’est faisable mais déjà plus chiant car va falloir que je me fasse une image.

Donc idéalement me faudrait un bon client mail web installable sans docker (voire déjà dans les dépots de debian).

Hello, celleux qui utilisent #Nextcloud sur PC et sur leur téléphone.

Vraisemblablement y a pas moyen d'avoir une synchro automatique téléphone -> cloud (parfois appelé "bidirectional" ou "two-way #sync "). Ce qui fait que je dois manuellement dire à NC de synchro mon vault #obsidian de mon tel vers le cloud.

Apparemment, y a FolderSync (payant et non ouvert) et Syncthing-fork (qui est uniquement P2P sauf que j'ai rarement le PC et le tél sur le même réseau en même temps)

✅️ I am currently in my 20th year in education and over the years I've worked in both secondary and college. I've been a sysadmin longer, having started at the NM Coalition for Literacy in 2000 while finishing college on the "long plan." I pivoted in 2018 back to the private sector and then back again to education in 2022. I've maintained this side company/DBA, Haack's Networking, throughout the entirety and I still have clients to this day that I began with in the early 2000s.

✍️ I've always been struck by the prohibitive cost of software. As a young kid, I remember my father purchased me MetroWorks CodeWarrior for learning C for my LC475 68K mac. I read somewhere in 1992 that I should learn C so that's why I asked for it. Over those next few months, it's hard to explain the frustration I felt at trying to keep the abstractions separated. Open firmware, vs. mac's OS at that time, vs., the IDE and C I was supposed to be learning. It helped at disambiguating abstractions, but was useless at teaching me C. I still suck at C. The package was pretty costly nevertheless.

📻️ While in my early days as a sysadmin, I remember the Adobe suites, Microsoft suites, etc., that we were obligated to keep up to date and purchase for our non-profit. We also had tons of macs, 5 laser printers, early flat panel displays, an early NAS, and a hard firewall (Sonic something). It was not sustainable for this non-profit whatsoever. After the prior Director left - who I still consider a mentor and friend to this day - others took over who made an effort to reduce spending and keep the tech lifts in line with reality. It was slow and painful, but/and I learned that costly is not better.

haven’t done webdev in a hot minute, but here’s some ideas:

1. there was a whole host of modules to bridge #drupal with #moodle. drupal, in turn, has a whole suite of videoconferencing modules that could be adapted for your needs. drupal also has kickass permissions & feed syndication systems. so you can whip up private RSS feeds.

2. after 2020, universities were switching to #nextcloud to avoid Zoom. their media/comms features are excellent

3. both use OAuth/ActPub logins

@cidney I enthusiastically recommend Nextcloud. I think it will have a lot of the features you're looking for.

Talk = Discord/Slack. Not as many features but has voice and video calling, which is rare for selfhosted apps.
Forum = Yep, it can do forums with the same users as all the other apps you install.
Forms = Surveys!
Office = Office suite with apps you'd expect

I'm sure there are options for email blasts too.

Every file made by each app is shareable. Sharing new betas or patches is super easy.

And one advantage it has over almost every other app is you can talk to and interact with users who don't wish to make an account. No more dark web! It's not perfect and it's simplistic sometimes but I made one to replace a Discord and have been having a blast on it.

In 2024, I went to LA to give a talk about how I made my own cloud storage to backup my pictures, documents, but also the ones of my family. I have chosen Seafile but it didn't work as expected. It filled the disk of my dad. At that time, I was suggested to try Nextcloud.

Today's the day, after 2 years. I've set up the latest docker image, spawned a PostgreSQL database, created some users, directories and uploaded files. Everything went well.

Then I started to install the mobile app to sync pictures from my phone and the desktop app to sync my documents. And things got spicy. The mobile app has uploaded 1200 files in... a day, with hundreds of errors I had to dismiss. The desktop app has uploaded 6 files in an afternoon, out of 1700, then stopped with failure. Why can't we have the performance of rsync with the user fiendly interface of nextcloud?

Pendant mes vacances, j'ai utiliséu pour la première fois de ma vie le format #markdown
Habituellement, pour des prises de notes, j'utilise BBEdit, la Rolls de l'éditeur de textes si vous voulez mon avis. Mais en déplacement, j'avais pas mon ordinateur, donc j'ai pris des notes (mes dépenses) avec un fichier .md sur #Nextcloud, et ça marche super bien, j'adore.
Autant, l'ouvrir avec BBEdit sur mon Mac est possible, et il colorie une partie du texte, autant, ce n'est pas très "user friendly".
Auriez-vous une recommandation d'un logiciel qui permet d'ouvrir ces fichiers sur #macOS ?

I've cleaned up my Raspberry Pi selfhosting setup a bit. I'm using two, each in an Argon ONE V5 case with a 1TB NVME drive, running Raspberry Pi OS.

'one' is serving Nextcloud All-in-one, Immich and Vaultwarden via a Caddy reverse-proxy. All using Docker containers, Caddy as a custom build with my domain DNS provider added.

'two' is used as remote borg backup destination for 'one', and later a few monitoring tools.

All three sites are using a wildcard certificate for my domain, and I connect via WireGuard (on the router) when away from home.

Path of least resistance:

I've tried Podman, AlmaLinux, and running a manual install of Nextcloud on Ubuntu. This setup follows recommended installations methods, and gives me fewer things to worry about.

Je plussoie largement, c'est à n'y rien comprendre. Non seulement le stockage semble éclaté en multiples points plus ou moins interconnectés, non seulement le vocabulaire semble non stabilisé d'un outil à un autre, mais en plus ce bouzin m'a rendu incompréhensible le partage entre OneDrive Pro et perso.

Dès que j'ai eu la chance et la possibilité de choisir moi-même les outils de l'équipe, je nous ai fait sortir de là au profit de #Nextcloud et #onlyoffice

*BETA RELEASE* looking for additional testers who know what they're doing.

This is a Linux #Nextcloud FUSE client with local caching, partial upload/download of files and all that good stuff that should make it possible to mount your Nextcloud files into your filesystem and actively work with the files without dying of boredom. It even supports setting a persistent eXecutable bit on the synced files!

I've run it towards my own valuable data for a few days (with an extra backup made beforehand) and so far it looks ok - but I'm only one user on one Linux system.

No changes to Nextcloud needed - it mainly uses the existing webdav APIs.

Avec les USA qui décident de qui peut accéder à leurs technos, c’est peut-être pas l’approche la plus saine.

I wish #ProtonMail would sync files to its Proton Drive on Linux distros, same as I used to in my Windows. It's a good alternative for OneDrive, and it's free. I only need 5GB max.

I've been reading about #NextCloud but I don't want to pay something like £10 a month.

#Nextcloud have tagged rc1 of the new version of their desktop client. I've built it.

I'm hoping my #OpenSUSE #Tumbleweed #Wayland #KDE Plasma installation is an outlier. The current version of the client just shows a black main window. This new rc1 does the same.

From LLM-assisted debugging I've figured out that it's the qml windows that just render as completely black - all other dialogs etc are fine. It's also not a general qml issue - my own test apps renders without issues.

... but if it's not just my machine it would probably be good to know. Not being able to see anything in the main window makes it difficult to sort out sync issues.

Also, wenn jetzt einer sagt "Das ist doch ein Hohn, dass der jetzt so Microsoft hinterherhechelt!", dann hat er vermutlich einen guten Punkt. So ein Schwachsinn und ein Bärendienst für die #opensource Community. Kann man das anders als mit Profitstreben und Narzismus erklären?

Finally, I published a new release of #Nextcloud Maps with support for NC 32, 33 and 34 :) It's a quite large release with also a port of the frontend to Vue 3.

Just updated my #Nextcloud to 34.0.0 . Everything appears to have just worked out of the box and they've added explicit support for #EuroOffice if you want or are required to use that.
