Dear Joplin users,
I set up Joplin a while ago to sync locally to the filesystem, i.e. a folder on my laptop. This folder is synced to a Nextcloud (i.e I am NOT using WebDAV to have Joplin talk directly to Nextcloud).
I set this up on two devices. On the first I created the directory and started the sync. On the second one I enabled the sync after the Nextcloud sync was finished. This worked back then, i.e. after creating a note on one device it showed up on the other after some time.
One of the laptops was off for some weeks and while the Nextcloud sync is properly finished and the actual files in the Joplin sync folder seem to be present, Joplin still did not show newer notes. Clicking on "Sync" multiple times did not help.
I forced a sync, overwriting the local files. All of the notes appeared after a restart. Nothing changed in Nextcloud.
Does anyone else have this issue? Any ideas how to avoid this? Or debug this in case it happens again?

Why Nextcloud feels slow to use

#collaboraoffice is excellent free alternative to Googles collaborative office technology, its based on Libre Office technology, #collabora is the largest contributor to #libreoffice and does a lot of other good for #freesoftware . You can install it super easy if you have a #nextcloud instance, or if you use a nice cloud host, or for no charge if you want to learn some systems administration and use your own hardware.

On a un peu tendance à l'oublier, mais en fait, 10 Go quand on stocke des mp3, ça fait un sacré grand nombre de morceaux.
Tout ça pour dire que je commence à migrer des morceaux que j'aime écouter sur mon instance nextcloud de chez @zaclys pour écouter de la zik à partir de ça avec l'appli supersonic sur mon ordi. Je suis donc full free open-source là, tout de suite, l'air de rien :)

Hi Fedi, I am currently limiting my search to password managers that have desktop apps. Arguably this is an unnecessary restriction: Bitwarden has a desktop app, but the vast majority of the time I just rely on the Firefox extension, which can even work offline. However, I occasionally clear my local Firefox data, so I feel a bit safer having passwords in a separate desktop app. I'll give Bitwarden a few weeks to see if they can resolve their AI issues. If not, I'll probably suck it up and lose autofill.
I have been using @bitwarden@fosstodon.org since 2019, and been a premium subscriber for most of that time. Due to their recent hyping of AI, I am interested in switching away. In this post, I have gone through every single password manager on @flathub@floss.social and compared them. The comparison is based around my use case and preferences, but I figure someone else might benefit from it too. I'm also very interested in any advice and recommendations y'all may have.
So far I am liking Gnome Secrets (desktop) and KeepassDX (Android). However, there does not seem to be a way to get Secrets to autofill on websites.

The project is considered a proof of concept and not suitable for production use.Notice that they didn't actually answer any of my questions. Meanwhile, user grp on the BW forum pointed out that the Bitwarden Clients Github repository contains
"copilot instructions," so it seems like they are indeed using AI for development. All of which pushes me away from Bitwarden.Update: On 2025-08-07, I got another email response. This time, they did answer the questions.
1) Regarding the safety of using AI with passwords: The Bitwarden MCP (Managed Companion Process) server is designed to operate locally with a strict security-first approach. It maintains Bitwarden's zero-knowledge encryption model, meaning your vault data remains encrypted and secure unless explicitly decrypted by you. The AI agent does not bypass or weaken this model. However, we understand your concern—Bitwarden does not claim AI is infallible, and for that reason, we encourage users to use self-hosted, trusted AI models and to carefully consider any use case before allowing an AI agent to manipulate sensitive data. Use of the MCP server is completely optional.
2) Yes, you can trust that AI is not being introduced into the standard Bitwarden clients or services without user consent. The MCP server is entirely separate from the core Bitwarden experience. It's opt-in and runs independently. There is currently no plan to introduce AI functionality into Bitwarden's core clients or infrastructure, and any future changes would be communicated transparently and require user participation.
3) To your third question, Bitwarden does not currently use AI to develop or generate code for its main clients or server infrastructure. Our development processes remain human-driven, with security, reliability, and transparency as priorities.Their answer to the first question seems vague and doesn't actually answer.
Their answer to the second question is exactly what I was hoping to hear.
For the third question, their answer is what I wanted to hear...but it's also
wrong. They are indeed using AI in development, as evidenced by their Github. This incorrect answer makes me wonder if I can trust the answer to the second question.So, what are the options I am considering?
Keypass with Nextcloud for syncingThis is the recommendation I see the most. Keepass stores all your passwords in a single local encrypted file, and expects you to use another program to sync. There are a lot of "keepass-compatible" apps to choose between.
First, on Android, one Bitwarden feature I use heavily is "unlock with pin." Downloading my Bitwarden vault from the server requires entering my very long Bitwarden password plus 2fa. Unlocking my vault on my device to which I am already logged in only requires entering a short password. That's good, since entering my full password on my phone takes a long time.
EDIT: The two that people seem to like are Keepass2Android (only on Google Play) and KeepassDX (on F-Droid). Both seem very nice and have quick-unlock features.
On desktop, there seem to be fewer options. I see

Edit 2025-07-22: Holy shit, KeepassXC has jumped on the "if you don't like AI you must not have used it enough" train. Stay away from them.

Which looks a lot better. However, it doesn't have a way to autofill on websites, and this issue has been open for a long time.

Next up is AuthPass, which has both desktop and mobile apps and is keypass compatible. The desktop one seems to work well, but it has the same limitation as Gnome Secrets: no way to autofill passwords on websites.
Edit 2025-07-24: While it's not on Flathub, Keeweb is another Keepass-compatible desktop app, and it
does have a browser extension that works with it for autofill.https://keeweb.info/
However, development of the app seems mostly stalled.
I'll also mention the original Keypass, which is Windows software that works on Mac and Linux through Mono. It's not on Flathub, but it is in some distro repositories. I tried it and I couldn't get dark mode, which means I can't use it.
Nextcloud Passwords
Aside from using Nextcloud to sync a Keepass valut, there is also Nextcloud's native password manager. There appear to be three Android apps:

This one I also can't log in, but there is no error message, I just get sent back to the login screen.
I also tried logging into the desktop flatpak and I am seeing white text on white background.
KWalletManagerI have a rule that if I want to use my computer to do X, and there's a KDE app which does X, then I will give the KDE app a fair try. KDE has a password manager, so I have to at least consider it.
The issue here is I can't figure out any way to sync it with Android. Can this be done?
PasskyI took a look at Passky.

It's a service like Bitwarden: one company provides a desktop app, a mobile app, a browser extension, and a service to sync all of them. One thing to note is that it seems like all of their repositories have very little activity: The Android repository has had no commits for close to three years, the web vault has had no commits for close to two years, and the desktop repository (which is Electron) has had no commits since April 2024. That might not be a bad thing if it's working, but I don't think I'm qualified to assess the difference between "this software has unpatched security issues we aren't fixing" and "This software is working perfectly so we don't need updates."

Much like Keepass, it stores all passwords as a single encrypted file and expects you to use another program to sync. There are iOS and Android apps that are compatible.
The trouble here, as with Keepass, is getting the desktop app to autofill on websites. It does nominally have an "autofill" feature, but it can't detect when the site you are viewing corresponds to an entry: you have to open the desktop app, search for the relevant entry, open it, and then click "autofill." It's a lot less convenient than clicking the icon for Bitwarden's browser extension.

work by generating a password using a one-way function from your lesspass password and username. They do not actually store the generated password. It sounds like a nice idea, but there does not seem to be a way to import all the passwords I already have.

This is the one that is probably closest to Bitwarden in features. Unfortunately, it has several issues.
a) The server software is proprietary,
b) Logging in requires a Captcha. I can pass the captcha, but I'm always afraid that I will fail it.
c) The CEO has said and done bad things that would require a content warning if I got into them here (if you choose to look it up yourself, CW: US Politics).
d) The company is also into AI.
Not to be confused with Passky. This is another offline password manager which expects you to use another program to sync. It uses its own format, but it can import or export vaults to and from Keepass.
Passy does have an associated browser extension which allows autofilling on desktop websites.
There are two limitations that stop me from whole-heartedly jumping onboard with Passy. First, while it can store TOTP keys, it doesn't seem to have a way to generate TOTP codes. Or maybe it does, and I just can't figure out how. I opened a question about it on Github.
EDIT 2025-07-25: They responded that Passy can actually generate TOTP codes, so my complaint in the preceding paragraph is wrong.
Secondly, I have a bunch of my passwords organized in folders. Importing them to Passy seems to remove the folders and doesn't seem to provide a way to readd them.

On l'oublie souvent, mais Thunderbird reste une alternative solide, #OpenSource et financée par les dons. J'ai regardé ce qu'il a dans le ventre.
C'est devenu un vrai collecticiel (mail, agenda, tâches) qui, enfin, gère le chiffrement #OpenPGP et la synchro #CalDAV / #CardDAV nativement (depuis les v78 & v102). Un must-have pour se coupler à un #Nextcloud ou autre serveur perso.
Surtout, leur philosophie est claire : pas de flicage, pas d'IA entraînée sur nos données.

I just had issues with upgrading to the latest #NextCloud. In short, the GroupFolders app was not compatible with the new version and somehow broke everything. Had to disable the app, tried to update al apps (including GF, but that one failed), then finished the NC upgrade, then finished updating all apps, then reenabled the app.

We also host Nextcloud for one client and also another instance for ourselves. I use it most for calendaring.
From here on out, though, we are looking for a different solution for "cloud" type file storage: an alternative to Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive.
We are pretty confident we've found a good solution in OpenCloud, a fork of OwnCloud Infinite Scale. Need to do some more testing, though.

@nuintari F-Droid has been great. After moving from #gmail to #mailbox_org I switched my mobile mail app to #K9 and have been using the #Fossify apps. While they may not have the most features, they are minimal and that's appreciated.
I still have some work to do in #deGoogling. #Nextcloud or another solution as well as finding a #googlevoice alternative.
#fdroid has been overall a positive experience. It reminds me of #googleplay from circa 2011.

I think my dalliance with #android may be coming to an end. I bought this titan 2 phone backing a kickstarter. It has been very unreliable. Maybe it is android 15. Maybe it is my wacky settings (i try to log out of google and do as little with them as possible). I restrict or remove permissions on a lot of stuff. It could be instability in the maker's mods to android. I don't know. But i deal with crashes. A lot
The fact is that two email programs (Thunderbird and K-9) won't run. They literally crash when opened. ProtonVPN crashes as soon as i tap "sign in". I cant remember the last time i dealt with this on my #iPhone. With this android phone it's a daily thing. I used the built-in gmail app and even it crashes sometimes.
I still don't have all my #nextcloud services integrated. I have installed TWO helper apps already (DAVx and IMAP notes) to get contacts, calendars, and notes. I STILL don't have reminder lists working. All these things were effortless on IOS. On android it's not supported out of the boxand i have to search for a workaround.

I've come to the conclusion that, while I am still using #Windows 11 out of inertia, it's time to contemplate an exit plan towards #Linux . The switch won't be any time soon (I have too much other stuff on my plate for the foreseeable future), but I do want to avoid paying further license fees to #Microsoft .
Major areas of concern:
- My #Steam library. I am by no means a heavy gamer, but I want to check if the major games I enjoy are known to work on Linux.
- Migrating away from #GoogleDrive towards #NextCloud is going to be a major chore, but it's something I can start in advance.
- I am a very heavy user of Notepad++ for my #TeXLaTeX typesetting, so I need a replacement whose user experience comes close (and no, neither vim nor emacs count).
As for what distribution to choose... I dunno. Lots of people at my place of work use #Debian , so maybe that would be a good idea?

I've been self-hosting NextCloud for 4 months now and it has become absolutely essential to me, replacing Dropbox, Google Docs, Google Drive and WeTransfer. But it has so many more capabilities too!

#Nextcloud 32.0.1 is available according to my server. The changelog hasn't been posted to their website yet, but the update is available if you want it, at least if you're using the manual tarball version with your own database/webserver setup like I am. I'm not sure about the availability of the snap or docker versions.

Depuis plusieurs années, je galère à utiliser l'appli #Nextcloud pour #Android pour envoyer mes photos, sauvegardes Signal/SMS, etc. Depuis quelques mois c'est même devenu impossible, l'appli n'est vraiment pas faite pour gérer des gros volumes. Donc je me suis temporairement rabattu sur l'appli (non libre) https://foldersync.io/ qui permet de synchroniser facilement un répertoire avec un serveur Nextcloud. C'est un peu lent mais c'est fiable et ça affiche clairement la progression et les stats

OK, avoir un cron qui fait la mise à jour des apps #NextCloud, c'est pas une bonne idée : tous les 4 matins on se retrouve avec NextCloud en rideau parce qu'une mise à jour d'application nécessite d'autres actions qui ne sont pas exécutées par `occ app:update --all`. Faut exécuter `occ upgrade` après. C'est nul.

Nice to have everything #Ansible'd and monitored. I forgot that while downgrading to PHP 8.2 I had to uproot my #RoundCube install. One `./run.sh` in my Ansible repo and everything was back.
Also, thanks to #Prometheus, its node exporter, its ability to pick up text files left by scripts, plus #Grafana, I got notification that while the upgrade was happening (I had to remove all PHP 8.2 by hand, and wait till the automation installed the 8.4), one of the cron jobs (#NExtCloud's) was failing.

We have decided to withdraw the complaint against Microsoft with the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition. We filed the complaint together with about 30 other organizations in 2021 against the bundling of OneDrive with Windows. Since filing the complaint there has not been any noticable progress. Given the lack of interest from the European Commission, lengthy process and costs on our side, Nextcloud decided to withdraw the complaint.

Grosse faille de sécurité dans #Redis qui porte le nom de #Redishell https://www.sysdig.com/blog/cve-2025-49844-redishell. Corrigée dans #Debian https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/redis-server (et par conséquent dans #Yunohost). Faites vos mises à jour. Pour rappel, Redis est utilisé comme cache pour #Nextcloud par exemple.

@Yaiaou N'importe quelle solution #CalDAV hébergée en ligne. Plein de @ChatonsOrg font ça très bien, par exemple avec #Nextcloud (qui propose des agendas CalDAV). Il suffit d'utiliser #DAVx5 (ex Davdroid) pour synchroniser avec le terminal Android et l'agenda partagé sera accessible depuis n'importe qu'elle application d'agenda.

Finally, named shared links are possible again (it was formerly by using an App), this is now hardcoded and part of the core.
The function needs to be enabled side-wide by your Nextcloud admin.
It then allows you to create and publish shared links not with a hash as link but with a name like "foo":

There's a #bug in the #NextCloud updater, where it complains about an extra file found called `REUSE.toml`. According to https://github.com/nextcloud/server/issues/55111 it's safe to remove the file by hand and retry the upgrade.

I'm at the coolest network meeting for EU gov #OSPO's in Brussels today 🔥🔥
I had an opportunity to talk with Dirk Schrödter, Minister for Digitalization of Schleswig-Holstein (SH), and currently listening to SH @CIO Sven Thomsen's presentation.
SH is so far ahead!! They're implementing #Linux desktops, they're already using #Nextcloud and #LibreOffice, and end of this month all their gov email will be migrated from Microsoft Exchange to #OpenXChange.

Hello there. My group has been using (free) Slack for chatting among ourselves. We are ~20 ppl in 3 locations, so chat has to work.
We want to move, but whereto? We consider #NextCloud Talk, #Mattermost, or #Zulip. We are fine with #selfhosting. It must be #opensource. We just need the chat, not integration with video or other advanced features.
What are you using? Where would you move to (and why)?

Nextcloud setup locally. Reverse proxy for 15 services with a self signed cert (local acme server and caddy) that is working on iOS, macOS, Linux,…
NC desktop on iOS and macOS works like a charm.
The Linux desktop client refuses to connect because the SSL cert isn’t accepted. Same host can curl the web server without warning.
The amount of plainly stupid, condescending, inaccurate or plain unhelpful comments I’ve read in the #nextcloud forum and GitHub issues makes me want to pay for Resilio.

Finally set up my own #nextcloud instance. Now my little optiplex server hosts nextcloud, #jellyfin and #immich. With 32tb of Raid1 storage I think I'll be set for a while.

Okay so today as I'm not well, I didn't go to work but found myself looking for ways to remove Google from my life, bit by bit.
Now I need to have a new automatic transfer of my photos to a backup space. I added 5Go to my Nextcloud with @nubo_coop. Let's see how it goes!

LocalSend is an application for cross-platform file-sharing with a user experience similar to Apple's proprietary AirDrop.

It can be more convenient than sharing via #Syncthing or #Nextcloud for large file transfers or one-off transfers between devices, especially across devices running free and proprietary operating systems.
Alternatively, you can transfer files via Bluetooth old-school style, but #LocalSend uses Wi-Fi or ethernet which are much faster.
I got used to having a scratch buffer in Emacs.
I am not using Emacs anymore, but tried to compensate for this by using a ~/scratch.md file. It didn't stick, i.e. wasn't habit-forming.
Trying out a scratch.md in Nextcloud Notes now.
It took me some time to figure out that "Notes is a native app" in Nextcloud means that I just need to create a new text file and start writing. I spent some time searching the menus for an app called "Notes".

Ce que je redoutais le plus est passé : import de l'ancienne bdd dans #postgresql.
Je pense pas l'avoir dans les règles de l'art, mais ça a fonctionné du premier coup.
Demain je reconfigure le stockage pour que les fichiers soient de nouveau accessibles et j'agglomère mes notes pour compléter mon #wiki.
Ensuite on verra pour remettre en place les #backups parce que ça m'a bien servi sur ce coup là.

Le soucis ne vient pas d'#alpinelinux qui serait ou se serait merdifié mais du #SSD système qui a pas loin de 15 ans.
Le système de fichiers est corrompu.
On repart avec du neuf, mais question:
J'ai des dumps en .sql de la BDD #postgresql.
Pour les injecter sur la nouvelle install #nextcloud, je dois quoi ?
Nom du user, de la bdd, le password, tout à la fois ?
Ou je peux juster créer un user, une bdd et injecter le dump dedans ?
Je maitrise pas trop.
So, several #nextcloud upgrade failures in a row, presumably the download is too slow, some timeouts might be involved, then a lock file forbids retrying. I thought I'd check the release notes, just in case, but https://nextcloud.com/changelog/#latest31 still pretends 31.0.7 is the latest (while 31.0.8 is).
TIL: you just can't just `occ upgrade`, since that relies on having already downloaded and installed files…

In many home networks this might be a much better option than something like #NextCloud. Just run it on a #Linux system and go.

If you're running Nextcloud on top of Apache2 on Debian 12 server and after upgrading to Debian 13 server it refuses to start up again, do the following:
a2dismod php8.2
a2enmod php8.4
systemctl restart apache2
At least that was what I needed to do.
