@Hiajen - My general strategy with LoRa networks - with a goal towards ending up with a local robust Reticulum network - is to effectively "prototype" the physical layer with MeshCore, since it has decent tooling to show where RF failures happen.

Once I'm confident I have a solid MeshCore network running, begin converting nodes (or installing parallel nodes) to build out the physical RF layer for Reticulum.

@Hiajen - Being able to look at MeshCore's message hops between two LoRa points is quite helpful in knowing where additional repeaters and other infrastructure is needed.

I never have a lot of spare time, but yesterday I in an about 1 hour revived an old Pixel 4A https://lineageos.org/ - and I created a news and weather bot (work in progress but it works!) for #meshcore for folks who may not have internet access that I run on the phone. I put Lineage on a really old Samsung, and I use it to stream music on my bedroom. Anywho don't throw out your old phone!

My newest creation: the Pickle Repeater.

It’s made from a Seeed Studio Companion — the cheapest one I could find, about $25 USD — a battery I got for free from AliExpress, and an empty plastic pickle jar.

The battery has a little solar panel built into it, so I’m testing how long this ridiculous contraption can keep running.

I think the battery normally goes for around $20 on AliExpress. So if this works, and I can make a casing that lets enough light in to charge the solar panel while also being waterproof and weatherproof, then we might have a pretty cheap no-solder repeater for people who don’t own soldering tools or just don’t want to fuck around with that shit.

Right now it’s mounted on a pool-cleaning pole I found in the garbage, because of course it is.

So far, it fucking works. I’ve been able to chat with people hundreds of kilometres away.

More pickle-based telecommunications research to come.

I did a test in Romania, #meshtastic vs #meshcore and here is the quick summary:

Over 250 Meshtastic nodes found, compared to 70 Meshcore nodes.

BUT

Meshtastic was basically dead, no one talked, or answered anything. I only got one message with the following - "test"
Compare that to Meshcore, where I got hundreds of messages and people where fast to give me recommendations regarding restaurants and places worth to visit.

The meshcore coverage was also great, with some repeaters on mountain tops (2000 meters high) that connected the bigger cities to each other.

Connection to Bulgaria and Serbia was also working great.

My TL;DR conclusion is that people set up a Meshtastic node, then get bored and forget about it, while people that wants more, and really gets into offgrid-mesh moves over to Meshcore

La batterie tient bien le coup aussi et se recharge facilement (semble-t-il) avec le petit panneau de 10w (max)

Petit test pour s'ouvrir dans et au-delà (après) de la vallée

Tout changera au fur et à mesure comme l'antenne, le boîtier et une alimentation solaire

Là, c'est juste une preuve de fonctionnement à partir du camp de base 😋...si ça fonctionne

Je viens de finir le jeu Caravan SandWitch sur switch.
Je suis pas du tout joueur (premier jeu auquel je joue "assidument" et que je termine, il m'aura fallu 6 mois parce que j'ai pas toujours la console a dispo).
J'ai bien aimé l'univers, ça parle beaucoup de hack, de bidouille (électronique, informatique) dans un monde où il n'y a plus d'abondance. Ça m'évoque un peu ce que je vois passer ici à propos de #meshcore etc.

Bref, va peut être falloir chercher le suivant.

Avec le t-beam, pas moyen de le faire entrer en mode dfu, ou en tout cas flasher et pc ne le trouve pas

par contre , le t-echo , pas de soucis, un double clic sur le bouton reset et c'est bon.

et ensuite je me suis rappelé que j'ai 2 rak 4630. J'en ai sorti 1 et un double clic plus tard , ça le faisait aussi.

As far as I know, #Meshcore is better in environnement where there are a lot of nodes, because it found one strait way to deliver the message.
And since #Meshtatic send the message to all' nodes the module is connected to, it might be a better way for emergency in rural environnement, isn't it ?

I have to find out how #Meshcore would be better than #Meshtastic for emergency rural communication. I have small experience with the latter, none with the former.

Ok, I guess we solved how to link the CT #MeshCore network to the rest of the RI/MA/NH (and beyond) regional mesh.

This has now opened up the western/southern side of the map, Albany, NYC, NJ, PA etc.

Everything you see here is 100% community run, by individuals at their own expense and for the collective use of the community at large with some loose coordination.

There are many parallels to the #Fediverse here, it is a distributed network of non-corporate infrastructure for community use.

Si c'est vrai, mon expérience #Mesh #Meshtastic #Meshcore va s'arrêter là, de suite. Je ne me lance pas dans cette expérience pour être dépendant encore plus des Américains pour communiquer, mais pour m'en défaire.
Déjà que ce site flasher.meshtastic est hébergé aux USA, et est blindé de traqueurs gogole... 🤬

pour les contacts, je pense qu'il y a moyen de faire ça "à distance" si j'ai bien compris ce que j'ai vu

les canaux, c'est ok je pense: il y a un canal public directement dispo et j'en ai fait un autre pour test.

faudrait que je tente le coup sur un des heltec et une autre device pour de la testouille "rapide"

Première journée connectée et j'ai reçu un message de Suisse le réseau est incroyablement étendu !!

Meshcore: techniques de radio-amateur qui fonctionne par appli et petite device avec une antenne LoRa, qui fait "sauter" (hops) les messages cryptés d'une node à l'autre jusqu'à arriver à un destinataire

Là ça veut dire qu'avec l'aide de 42 nodes dispersées entre Nantes et la Suisse, j'ai réussi à recevoir un message de Porrentruy c'est une dinguerie quand même !

Et sans utiliser ni internet, ni de connexion télécom. C'est complètement off-grid !

- voir le réseau #meshcore bouger très vite, attendre du matos (trop ?), tester, échanger avec des gens motivés et pas loin de chez moi. Marrant de tester des antennes même si je comprends pas tout 😁
- savoir que N1 est arrivée à Nice avec sa twingo (je chie sur Ciotti en passant).
- avoir une jolie bague offerte par amoureuse ce weekend. En plus elle a un anneau central qui tourne. Non, je ne passe pas mon temps à le faire tourner (si).

Je suis un peu moins présent en ce moment :
- j'ai mes deux filles (adorées) à 100%
- je taff (pas ouf dingue non plus). Non, ça c'est nul/20.
- trop de temps sur le réseau #meshcore
- y'a un chaton à la maison
- y'a la grise qui a besoin de câlins pour oublier qu'il y a un chaton à la maison

Pour backup mon NAS Synology, j'avais un VPS.
Je viens de le fermer pour tester Synology C2 (pas cher).
On teste...
Le top ça serait de faire des backups croisés avec un NAS chez amoureuse.
Mais on est pas assez avancé dans la relation pour proposer de mettre un NAS chez elle (et un répéteur #meshcore)

Today I added companion telemetry support into #Meshy. When you pull in the location, the official #MeshCore client shows it on the map. In Meshy it also shows your location, so that you can see how far you're from the other companion.

I have not posted so much about #meshtastic lately, mostly because our area have basically moved over to #meshcore instead. The reason is that the few people who where active wanted to try out meshcore - so I joined them.

Connection between Borås and Kinna/Skene is much more stable now, and we have plans to expand the mesh down to the coast - and then be able to reach the bigger mesh further down south.

Meanwhile, @jesperbj have done an amazing work with the https://meshat.se website, launched several new service like https://meshcore.meshat.se - a live map over the meshcore-network reachable from Sweden.

Also, a new forum is live - https://forum.meshat.se - with ActivityPub support :)

And yes, the forum is mostly for residents in Sweden :)

I made the mistake of picking up a Heltec v2 device recently, only to discover that "it didn't work". This seemed to be because our mesh uses a 62.5kHz bandwidth, and the v2's oscillator often isn't stable enough. If your mesh is >= 125kHz you will probably be OK.

Shifting the main frequency up a bit to compensate is a workaround; from 869.618MHz to 869.635 has worked; mine has gone from 917.365 to 917.390 and I can now see adverts.

Or, just, don't use a v2 :-)

1- j'ai reçu mon répéteur #meshcore, flashé, configuré (demain sur le toit). Mais comme j'ai pas de "compagnon" : bha c'est frustrant. Ça arrive demain 🤞
2- grosse mise en prod ce matin. Impeccable. Je sais même pas pourquoi je suis pas augmenté de 73%
3- on a plus de chat. c'est invivable. C'est vide. C'est nul. De la merde. Du vomi tiède. Elles me manquent. Mais j'ai eu la chance de les avoir et de partager un bout de vie. Fait chier fort quand même 🥺

A while back, I was mostly-lurking on a regional #Meshcore (like #Meshtastic , but different) discord, when someone on there tried to update a repeater and accidentally soft-bricked it. They needed to climb up to where it is to get a physical connection. But there's a raven nesting near where they've propped up the device, so they're lamenting the chore of climbing up to it.

I replied “Nevercore.”

It barely got a reaction. I am sad for this community. (-;

This is an excellent #EMCOM thread. I love my radio stuff. I haven't yet set up an antenna at the new house (I primarily do #QRP field/temp setups) but it's on the list.

#MeshCore is also on the list, and I think a better entry ramp for normal people. #AmateurRadio is super well-documented and the initial license test is not that hard, but the cultural hurdles (i.e. moving into a new nerdspace) are significant. (I like radio much more than radio people.)

In these pleasant (relatively) days of late spring, it's probably a good idea to follow the EFF's advice and figure out how to set up emergency communications for when things go very wrong, and there's no internet, and no cell phone service.

I've done a lot of thinking about this the last year or so, and actually set up, tested, and used three different approaches, and here I share that with you:

This new #firefox release should be particularly interesting for #mesh people including #meshcore, #reticulum and #meshtastic because you'll now be able to use web apps and flashers to talk to your devices over USB, whereas you had to use Chrome before!

I want to set up a solar-powered #Meshcore repeater for my area and I would like some recommendations from anyone currently operating one as to which equipment I should be considering. I have a budget of around USD300.

Je continue les tests #Meshtastic, des voisins ont investi mais ça a l'air super erratique, ils habitent en face et on ne peut pas vraiment se parler, ils ne voient quasi aucun nœud, je ne peux pas communiquer si tout avec l'un des deux, c'est étrange.

J'apprends chaque jour un peu sur le réseau, les rôles semblent bien mûrs maintenant par rapport aux critiques que j'ai pu lire, et le zero hop a l'air pas mal. Je testerai quand même #Meshcore pour comparer.

Après avoir lu les notes de @joachim je me suis enfin décidé à flasher mon vieux heltec v3 avec meshtastic, mais j’ai l’impression que la carte meshcore indique un maillage beaucoup plus dense (là j’ai vu 2 nodes en 24h).
En même temps le site de gaulix (meshcore | edit: pas que en fait) avec toutes ses images générées par IA m'inspire pas la plus grande des confiances
