When I don't have a laptop with me, I sometimes do server admin stuff using my smartphone. It's a reasonably secure phone because it runs a hardened Android distribution called #GrapheneOS. Or so I thought. Shoddy apps can of course violate your security and privacy on any operating system.

As a matter of fact, I once set up a Mastodon server via SSH using my smartphone as a terminal. My terminal app of choice is @termux – it almost feels like Debian Gnu/Linux.

Today I found out that the #Termux developers do not care about their users' privacy: They put Google's DNS resolvers as defaults into their app and do tell their users about it. Which means that until today, Google learnt about each hostname I resolved in Termux, although I had configured my smartphone to use a different DNS resolver. The Termux developers were alerted to this bug ten years ago by @rugk but chose not to do anything about it.

Someone wrote a shell script to correct this. But it requires special permissions you can only grant via ADB. So I just used a text editor to replace Google's DNS resolvers with privacy-respecting ones gleaned from @kuketzblog's recommendations in my first link: editor /data/data/com.termux/files/usr/etc/resolv.conf

AI involvement does not mean slop code. Humans write plenty of crappy code on their own. If you want to boycott a product for any AI involvement then say that. Don't hide behind "AI slop" FUD.

Again, do you have any evidence that slop code (AI or human written) has entered the GrapheneOS codebase? What actual evidence have you seen or observed to lose trust in the GrapheneOS project? If you trusted them to develop a secure OS and ecosystem before AI then what changed your mind about their handling of code submissions to the project?

I want to know what the alternative is that you're proposing. I hate GenAI, too. Yet, I see nothing that is a viable alternative. Simply turning off OS updates, as you suggest, is not a solution. It does not make one more secure. Turning off updates actually makes a device less secure, which is a weird thing to do for what I'd assume is a security-conscious person to do.

I have asked this question to most every person I see complaining about the GrapheneOS project not rejecting GenAI technology. No one has been able to propose anything as secure as GrapheneOS. Or, they suggest projects that also use GenAI, and provide less security, too. So, it makes no sense.

The one thing I hate about being on #GrapheneOS is not having a good way to back up or transfer app data in a unified way. Some apps separately have ways to export/import settings to local or cloud, but many don't. If we are talking about just one or two apps, it is not a big deal. But if you want to change out your app source or move your apps to a different profile, it is manually very tedious to have to reconfigure everything. I understand why it is. I'm just complaining. I want dot files.

The PayPal app now refuses to run on GrapheneOS at all. It crashes with a RootDetectionSecurityException ("s=root") the moment you open it, so users of this privacy-focused Android build are locked out of their own accounts by a major payments provider's security policy.

Quand je fais "Enregistrer ma trace"
- si l'écran reste allumé (repérage), l'enregistrement fonctionne.
- Sur un circuit connu, smartphone en veille dans la bretelle du sac, la trace ne s'enregistre qu'à l'activation de l'écran (souvent en fin de parcours).

Pas de souci avant de passer sous GrapheneOS.

Déjà rencontré ce cas ? Config? Vient-il de GrapheneOS ou d'OsmAnd ?

For gmail and Google search, there are plenty of alternatives.

@VeroniqueB99 If you make it part of your buying decisions then you can have all of these things. Free open-source software is a big part of it, but just not buying the latest and most expensive model also helps.

My (electric!) car doesn't have any of this frippery, for example, because I bought cheap. My computer and my phone don't because they run free open source software (Debian Linux, #grapheneos)

@adbenitez I agree that if I let it define the update timing, it can be rather annoying. But (as mentioned in another post), I just ignore the reboot until I'm ready. So just make sure that the automatic reboot setting is turned off.

In times where it's trying to update in the late evenings, I usually ignore the reboot until sometime in the morning so I have full confidence that my morning alarm will go off.

So far, I haven't really had a bad update on Stable channel.

I am already pissed off one can not disable automatic download of updates, one can disable the updates app completely, but I would prefer to manually check for updates and review available update before downloading not to completely disable updates

then after applying updates it takes ages "optimizing apps" see this screenshot, only 8 optimized apps out of 35 and it has taken 19 minutes already and in the meantime the phone is very slow and overheated :(

privacy laws, including court cases, only recorgnize passwords as part of your right to privacy. so if you lock your phone with biometrics, DHS/TSA/ICE can force you physically to unlock the device. not so with passwords… until now.

prosecutors in Atlanta want to use this case to completely take away the right to privacy with passwords.

The U.S. Justice Department is prosecuting an American
for allegedly providing U.S. border authorities with a passcode that wiped the contents of his phone,
according to an indictment and media reports. 

This is thought to be the first known case in the United States where federal prosecutors have charged someone for the alleged destruction of data using a “duress” password built into a phone’s software.

According to The Guardian, which covered the story earlier this week following the court’s first hearing on Monday,
Atlanta resident Samuel Tunick is fighting the charges.

Tunick’s attorneys said that it was unlawful for U.S. Customs and Border Protection to seize his phone as he arrived back in the U.S. last year
and that any evidence
— including the alleged wiping of his phone
— should be thrown out.

The case centers on a feature included in GrapheneOS, a custom Android operating system that runs in place of the software on most modern Google Pixel devices.

Tunick’s attorneys confirmed GrapheneOS was running on his phone.

The software feature allows the device owner to set a passcode that deliberately wipes the contents of that device if entered instead of the user’s unlock passcode.

Tunick’s case also raises ongoing questions about what constitutional rights can be invoked at the border,
which the U.S. government has long asserted is not U.S. soil until a person is authorized to enter.

The government’s indictment, which contains a typo (“Untied States Code”),
accuses Tunick of allegedly providing a passcode to border agents that caused the phone
to “delete the digital contents,”
prior to the device being seized.

Tunick’s attorneys filed a motion to suppress the evidence, claiming that the detention and the seizure were unlawful.

The motion said U.S. border authorities took Tunick into a secondary inspection at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport as he returned from overseas on January 24, 2025,
but that he was repeatedly denied access to an attorney and was not informed of his legal rights.

Tunick’s attorneys accused the government of demanding access to his phone under the pretext of searching for child exploitation imagery,
but without providing evidence to justify its suspicion.

His motion to suppress argued that the government was instead investigating him over his association with a
long-running environmental movement called "Defend the Atlanta Forest", which opposes the development of a sprawling training campus for law enforcement in Atlanta dubbed “Cop City.”

Apparement faut juste une app bancaire qui ne se repose pas sur Google Pay. Bon c'est pas le cas de la mienne malheureusement.
