This is unacceptable. The Google Play app review process now regularly takes longer than a week. I understand that the pipeline is clogged with AI slop, but #Google needs to prioritize #Android apps that have been around for 12+ years and push updates only once a month.

“Virtually every Android device comes with the Play Store preloaded, but there are other ways to get apps. F-Droid bills itself as a community-driven source for free and open source Android apps, but its official app store has gone 10 years without a major update. That’s finally changing: After a multiyear effort, the team has just announced F-Droid 2.0 is rolling out. The new F-Droid client was redesigned from scratch in Kotlin Compose, which is the standard for modern Android apps. This makes the store much more responsive, and there’s optional support for Android’s Material theming. The interface has also been cleaned up considerably, making the most important functions easier to access and hiding some others in overflow menus.”

I’ve been using F-Droid, along with Obtainium, for a long time. Many open-source apps are not at all on the official Android play store.

F-Droid fetches the public git/mercurial source code for an app, strips out non-free dependencies (like proprietary tracking, ads, or Google Play Services binaries), and compiles the APK on its build servers. Because F-Droid compiles the binaries itself, the resulting APKs are typically signed with F-Droid’s cryptographic key rather than the app developer’s key.

But this does guarantee that the app you download and install, is true to the published source code. Nothing of course is perfect, but we have seen numerous times that problematic apps have even appeared on both the Android and Apple play stores. So let no-one cast stones from their glass houses.

The reason I have returned twice to Android, is because of the freedoms of being able to install open source software without limitations. It bugs me that both Apple and Google go out of their way to control and monetise apps for the platforms. Imagine if Linux imposed such restrictions? Basically everything installed on Linux is “sideloaded” and guess what, my Linux has been working fine for decades (Better than my wife’s Windows has been struggling along).

On #Android, FileObserver bypasses the FUSE layer's per-app storage view, letting an unprivileged app watch another app's private folder. We show this against WhatsApp, revealing exactly when photos, videos, and files arrive or get deleted - we don't see the file's contents, but we definitely can get user behavior (incoming photo? oh immediately deleting it? :sus:).

When I don't have a laptop with me, I sometimes do server admin stuff using my smartphone. It's a reasonably secure phone because it runs a hardened Android distribution called #GrapheneOS. Or so I thought. Shoddy apps can of course violate your security and privacy on any operating system.

As a matter of fact, I once set up a Mastodon server via SSH using my smartphone as a terminal. My terminal app of choice is @termux – it almost feels like Debian Gnu/Linux.

Today I found out that the #Termux developers do not care about their users' privacy: They put Google's DNS resolvers as defaults into their app and do tell their users about it. Which means that until today, Google learnt about each hostname I resolved in Termux, although I had configured my smartphone to use a different DNS resolver. The Termux developers were alerted to this bug ten years ago by @rugk but chose not to do anything about it.

Someone wrote a shell script to correct this. But it requires special permissions you can only grant via ADB. So I just used a text editor to replace Google's DNS resolvers with privacy-respecting ones gleaned from @kuketzblog's recommendations in my first link: editor /data/data/com.termux/files/usr/etc/resolv.conf

Besoin d'aide avec le télephone portable de ma maman !

Il dit que le stockage est plein alors qu'en réalité pas du tout. Y'a genre 11Go censés être vides, impossible de trouver quoi que ce soit qui pourrait expliquer d'où viennent ces 11Go. Quoique que l'on enlève, le stockage est toujours plein. Du coup pas de photos, pas de màj d'applis, son portable est quasi bloqué.

Est-ce qu'il existe des outils qui permettraient d'arranger ça ? Évidemment c'est l'outil de nettoyage du portable qui dit que c'est plein et qui est incapable de nous dire d'où il trouve ces 11Go utilisés 😅
Et pas d'applis à télécharger vu que impossible actuellement.

I've got a small company that wants to use a tablet in their warehouse, they picked up a couple of cheap $120 andoid devices.

These devices need to be managed by me but the company is on the google basic plan, to fully manage this device the entire company must upgrade to google business Plus, that's an additional $7k per year.

I cannot justify a cost increase of $7000 to manage a single $100 device.

Options? alternatives? this device only needs a web browser and printer access.

Après une pause de près d'un an, CalyxOS est de retour. Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, et pour citer Wikipedia, il s'agit d'un système d'exploitation pour téléphones basé sur Android avec des logiciels majoritairement libres et open source. Il est produit par le Calyx Institute, une organisation américaine à but non lucratif, qui s'est fixé pour mission la confidentialité et la sécurité numérique pour tous. CalyxOS est une de ses activités principales. Pour la petite histoire, Nicholas Merrill, le fondateur, était auparavant propriétaire d'un petit fournisseur d'accès Internet. En 2004, il a contesté devant les tribunaux américains le régime des National Security Letters du Patriot Act, qui permettait notamment aux autorités d'obtenir certaines informations auprès d'entreprises. Cette procédure a duré environ dix ans et a contribué à influencer les règles concernant l'accès du FBI aux informations personnelles. Merrill a par la suite fondé le Calyx Institute en 2010.

La compatibilité de CalyxOS avec les services Google est assurée par microG, qui envoie beaucoup moins de données à Google que les Play Services de ce dernier. En pratique, la compatibilité logicielle est très bonne. Pour ce qui est du matériel, une bonne vingtaine de téléphones sont compatibles, dont beaucoup qui ne sont plus maintenus par leurs constructeurs, et qui peuvent donc avec une deuxième vie, par exemple le Pixel 5 de 2020, qu'on trouve facilement à 150€ d'occasion.

Le projet est comparable à LineageOS, à la différence que CalyxOS essaie de conserver les propriétés de sécurité d'un téléphone Android "officiel". Des applications comme Signal ou Tor sont mises en avant, et le bootloader est reverrouillé après installation, les mises à jour sont régulières et installables automatiquement, et elles sont signées et vérifiées. C'était d'ailleurs une des raison de la pause de près d'un an dans le projet: suite au départ de Nicholas Merrill et de Chirayu Desai, responsable technique de CalyxOS, les nouveaux responsables ont décidé:

• du changement des clefs et du processus de signature
• de la modernisation de l’infrastructure de développement
• de la stabilisation des cycles de publication des mises à jour
• de la révision et la mise à jour de la documentation d’utilisation et de développement, du wiki et des guides utilisateur

Cela a pris plus longtemps que prévu à l'origine. La traversée du désert est donc terminée et la nouvelle version (7.2.2.0) est disponible sur le site.

I use fingerprint login for the @1password app on my #Android phone. It usually works fine. Except when it doesn’t.

This morning when I attempted to auto-fill a login username in Vivaldi, 1Password’s login screen refused to display the fingerprint login prompt, and instead informed me, “You need to enter your account password before you can use your biometric unlock”. So I did that and it correctly auto-filled the username.

Latest thoughts on mobile devices...

* Done with Android. Google has killed any cachet it had with their recent developer registration and side loading BS. I won't waste any more time on Android messing around with embedded stuff for my projects.

* iOS phone that I currently own (13) will be my last. Apple is just as bad as Google, will leave this platform also, even if for the last 4-5 years it was a sort of pseudo-privacy respecting mobile safe space. It was all BS and is about to get worse.

* I really haven't used phone apps beyond Firefox (and now Waterfox and Librewolf since Firefox turned) in the set 10 years or so. Won't miss anything from this perspective. I've never trusted the platforms with my payment systems so I won't miss "tap phone to pay" either. CarPlay/AAuto is convenient but a huge privacy leak.

* My next phone will be something that takes calls/sms and can create a hotspot and does effectively nothing else; a decent camera that doesn't have AI BS ruining the images would be nice. Device suggestions appreciated.

* I'll probably start researching small, flip convertible, touchscreen laptops that can act as a tablet and pair it with the phone. The device needs to be able to run Linux and/or BSD (of course). The older Lenovo Tab 11 I have now is serviceable in the meantime until I find a decent lightweight convertible.

* Would consider a Linux phone but I don't care enough about this segment to put up with being a beta/gamma tester. Also, lot of money for an uneven and potentially bad experience.

* If we consider new cars a mobile device <wat!?> then I'm done with them as well. So much so that I recently bought a 2000 Volvo S70 5spd for my wife as a winter beater. No mobile telemetry there - unlike my son's new Toyota GR86.

* While navigating all this, boycotting U.S. tech/manufacturers.

* There's no fun/joy in any of this stuff any more. #RantyMcRantFace

Pretty tall order. Makes the further case for throwing the phone into the crusher and migrating from "digital man" to "analog man" and fleeing into the woods/workshop. Ha.

So iPadOS is the "stinker": it can initiate video calls, but not receive them. It's right up to date: v2.59.1

J'ai rapidement essayé Vela Maps hier sur un trajet. Beaucoup de soucis, cette appli (mais elle est jeune, laissons-lui le temps d'évoluer).

Sans entrer dans les détails, voici mon plus gros soucis:
OsmAnd et CoMaps font des *choix* de design, d'ergonomie, de fonctionnalités.
On a l'impression que Vela Maps ne fait aucun choix et essaie à tout prix de copier Waze. Et franchement, ça donne pas envie.
(Et le mélange de données OSM/Google, c'est assez bof.)

Si vous ne pouvez pas installer personalDNSFilter sur votre smartphone, il y a toujours la possibilités de configurer un DNS externe ("DNS privé" dans les réglages Android). Ça permet, en 2 minutes, de bloquer la majorité des trackers et publicités.

Il y en a un qui marche bien: dnsforge.de
(Ma liste bloque un peu plus de 400 000 domaines, dnsforge.de en bloque... 1,4 millions ! Et ils ont même une version plus forte: hard.dnsforge.de qui en bloque 2,7 millions)

As soon as an attacker can bypass it, it is possible to distribute app clones (fake banking app) that proxy-pass the Integrity requests to a controlled device, defeating the Play Integrity.

On the other side, how many users are locked-out of critical services because of the Play Integrity? For legit users, any non-trivial workaround is a blocker.

Play Integrity is not about security, but about coercition, Google's tool to impose their conditions: eg. forcing OEM to preinstall their apps, some with privileges (Chrome, Youtube, Play Services, etc)

Tusky doesn't support quote posts, and scrolling is janky.
Fedilab scrolling also stutters.
Pachli doesn't group notifications.
Mastodon official doesn't let you swipe between the tabs or customise them much.

I'm on a Pixel 8 Pro - so scrolling performance shouldn't be this bad!

Update your software on all your platforms regularly

This is the golden rule.

• We often do it in a work environment and get paid for that
• We do it for ourselves because it is good for our devices.
• We are careful doing it on our devices which can be bricked remotely by the factory (TV's treadmills trainers)
• We install piehole and other ad blackholes to protect our devices from pesky ads
• There are so many repositories to follow
• Auto updates are stupid, IMHO, even for workstations
• On servers with PHP, we need manual granular tested updates, if we used PHP (old version) because we are slow to implement PHP (new major version)

#Google is going to close down #Android platform, making installing "unverified" apps almost impossible for a regular user. This would completely kill #FDroid, something I rely on to get apps that don't track me, don't show me ads and don't try to exploit me.

If you care about #FreeSoftware, you should care about this. Maybe with enough public uproar, Google like many other corporations before it will back off from this plan. But it certainly won't happen on it's own.

#Olauncher tip: you can rename applications in the all-applications drawer with an emoji at the beginning so tat they get sorted to the top of the list. That way you get six extra hand-picked launchers on a secondary screen from the main eight.

The application names aren't sorted, because the emojis are different, but you could probably use something like a bullet "•" instead so that the names remain sorted.

I guess you don't really use Delta Chat for encrypted chatting at all? or all your contacts also are stuck in such old version? because current versions are v2+ which means, IIRC, they are incompatible with v1 due to changes in how the encrypted blobs are structured (increased metadata protection, key identity is no longer leaked in the encrypted emails, etc)

even if you manage to somehow talk to people using v2, in general it is a very bad idea to use such obsolete version with worse privacy and security, unless you don't care about that, but at that point maybe better just use a normal email client 🤔

So even though #CalyxOS has started releasing again, I think I'm gonna stick with stock #Android for one main reason; #RCS. There are some family members and friends that are just never going to migrate to #Signal, and the end-to-end #encryption available in RCS seems like an acceptable, pragmatic compromise, especially since even #Apple is rolling out support for it. Is it as private as Signal? No, but it's better than the SMS I would have to use on Graphene or Calyx.

I am already pissed off one can not disable automatic download of updates, one can disable the updates app completely, but I would prefer to manually check for updates and review available update before downloading not to completely disable updates

then after applying updates it takes ages "optimizing apps" see this screenshot, only 8 optimized apps out of 35 and it has taken 19 minutes already and in the meantime the phone is very slow and overheated :(

Vous connaissez un fork bien de k9 mail sur #android ? Depuis son rachat par Mozilla c'est de pire en pire... Déjà on ne peut plus voir les pièces jointes facilement l'UI est devenue naze. I played around with Google Assistant years ago and it was actually pretty darn good because it pulled its answers from Google search results, which at the time were reasonably reliable. I remember asking it things like, "What time does Bob Evans in Paintsville close?" and getting an accurate answer from it.

Now they're moving everyone to Gemini #AI, which may just make things up on you.

Whenever the EU steps in to regulate the big technology companies, the response from news outlets and bloggers (often funded or outright owned by right-wing extremists) is to claim it's just a bunch of dumb , tech-illiterate bureaucrats telling the vastly more intelligent and superior technology companies what to do.
