#Linux is the red pill.

You wake up. You see how deep the #RabbitHole goes.

At first, it is terrifying. The #terminal stares at you like Darth Vader asking if you know the power of the #CommandLine. You type one wrong character and feel like you accidentally launched nuclear missiles.

But then something changes. You realize your #computer actually belongs to you.

No ads in the Start Menu. No #AI assistant spying harder than a reality TV producer.

No mysterious background process eating half your #RAM like Pac-Man after three energy drinks.

You choose what gets installed. You choose when #updates happen. You choose what your #desktop looks like.

You are Neo.

Windows #users are still sitting in their pods, downloading the latest mandatory #update called KB-Whatever-Again, wondering why their printer suddenly speaks ancient Sumerian.

Linux is not perfect. Sometimes Wi-Fi drivers behave like a side quest in Dark Souls.

Sometimes you spend two hours fixing a problem just to feel smarter than everyone else.

But that is the point. The red pill was never about comfort. It was about #freedom.

And freedom means occasionally reading a forum post written by a Finnish guy in 2007 who solved your #problem and vanished forever like a #Jedi master.

Vanmorgen is Mastodon 4.6.1 live gegaan op social.overheid.nl. Dit op zich is niet nieuwswaardig. Maar het feit dat we hier een release hebben, waarbij de Nederlandse overheid direct heeft bijgedragen aan de ontwikkeling van verbeteringen aan Mastodon is dat wel.

Een prima voorbeeld hoe je als overheid of bedrijf op een verantwoorde manier open source kan gebruiken. Niet alleen consumeren, maar ook bijdragen in tijd en/of geld aan het gezond houden van het product.

Über die letzten Tage habe ich meine Videos immer wieder mal mit Shotcut geschnitten - einfach mal ausprobieren was damit geht und was nicht so. Als Sparringspartner stand Davinci Resolve zur Seite - heute habe ich Davinici Resolve deinstalliert. Auch wenn ich das Interface von Shotcut immer noch "sperrig" finde - bin ich von der Leistungsfähigkeit überzeugt. Kann es weniger als Davinici - vielleicht. Aber scheinbar brauchte ich diese Funktionalitäten nie #floss #shotcut

Linux Phone update:

I messed around trying to flash Mobian (mobile Debian) on my PinePhone, but I got a flashing light error code, and could not find any documentation for error codes in TowBoot.

"But, Edward!", you say, "If lack of documentation stopped your project, why not see if the famously excellent Arch Wiki can solve it?!"

Well, I tried that too!

And what happened is - I now have a snappy responsive Linux phone running Arch!

A small informal review of the Conservancy's "Recommendations when Using AI"

✍️ I think this is a very reasonable approach to LLM-gen-AI (hereafter AI) and floss space. Despite the fear mongering, AI is simply a tool. As with any statistical software, the human has to be the final arbiter of the content - not the tool itself. The free form input and output increases the concern over confirmation bias but it does not negate the value of the tool if used properly.

💡The main goal - imho - and one which we see this piece calling for in #12 ... is the rapid and immediate forking/development of floss-only AI tooling. Some do already exist, but they are crude in comparison. As with any software, the four software freedoms are paramount for ensuring the safety, equity, and accessibility of the tooling. This is essential and I've already started investing so as to be able to self-host my own generative AI.

🔨 In short, if these two criteria are met - namely, the human is the final arbiter of the content and the underlying models/tooling are floss, then I think arguments against AI-usage crumble. Sure, concerns over reliance on proprietary AI, governmental and/or big money influence, those all matter ... and floss and the four freedoms protect us from these valid concerns. AI is just the latest software - it's not special.

⚡️ This set of recommendations is game-changing. I think the next task for the Conservancy to consider is the legal / copyright side of the matter. A member of our small group brought this up and I share that same concern. As more litigation and legal precedent emerges, it will be interesting to see how this guidance evolves. In particular, I am referring to the US-side of legality re: https://www.copyright.gov/ai/ - I think the next wisest task for the Conservancy to take on is licensing + AI.

Final Grade: A+

This piece reaffirms the Conservancy firmly as a leader in FLOSS spaces. Massive thanks.

I think I've finally been able to condense what irks me about the @conservancy guidelines on #GenAI use for #FLOSS.

Out of 14, only the first 2 relate positively towards not using these systems. The others are accommodations and even encouragement.

That's ... remarkably biased and doesn't adequately reflect or even acknowledge the potential and real harms associated with them.

The SFC used to be fairly principled. This does not appear to be.

Ce besoin d'accessibilité veut aussi dire que nous sommes en train de passer d'un modèle assez « artisanal » de production de document, où chaque prof (par ex) produit ses supports dans son coin, souvent sans vraiment regarder comment font les autres, à une sorte de chaîne de production industrialisée.

Ce n'est pas forcément une mauvaise chose, dans le sens où ça signifie former les personnels aux bonnes pratiques.

J'ajoute qu'évidemment, il a été suggéré de proposer des modèles de documents accessibles, mais l'enjeu est de réussir à convaincre les agents au niveau administration, mais aussi idéalement les enseignant-e-s (-chercheuses) à utiliser les outils mis à disposition pour produire leurs supports de cours, etc. (en tant qu'établissement public, nous avons des obligations d'accessibilité, avec des standards FR et UE).

Par suites libres, j'entends : suites bureautiques (LibreOffice, Collabora, OnlyOffice, EuroOffice), suites type LaTeX, production de contenus textuels en général.

Pour le web nous sommes en général au taquet, et nos référents accessibilité sont plutôt bien formés. Mais si l'objectif est de pousser les agents à produire des contenus accessibles (ce qui en soi est bien), ça risque de nous orienter vers des outils proprio.

Hello, l'université où je bosse est en train de se poser les questions des outils lui permettant de produire des documents de tous types qui soient accessibles (au sens de RGAA).

Le constat qui nous a été rapporté actuellement est que MS est super avancé pour donner des conseils/aider à rendre notre contenu accessible — donc sur Word, PowerPoint, etc.

Existe-t-il quelque chose d'équivalent pour les suites libres ?

Il m'arrive de préférer Inkscape à Gimp pour faire du détourage, selon les cas.
- Placer les points essentiels en en posant le moins possible.
- Ajuster le courbes de Bézier et ajouter des points et courbes si nécessaire.
- Unifier les tracés.
- Dupliquer le tracé unifié pour l'utiliser comme ombre et découper l'image à détourer avec le tracé initial.
Désolé, pas de alt, c'est du graphisme un peu technique.
Si tu me parles de Photoshop tu prends un coup de poutre !

@vagrantc it is a common misconception about free/libre software licenses that they are "unenforceable".

It may look like so if you solely look at the amount of _jurisprudence_ about them, but by all means 90+% of known licensing problems are precisely solved without the costly need for legal action/procedure/etc.

Often, naming and shaming and the threat of a procedure likely to be won (by licensor) are more than enough to get actors to comply, esp. when compliance is so cheap. (1/ read the license -again? 2/ publish the code 3/ don't do it again)

#freelibre licenses are more effective _because_ they are social contracts avoiding courts.

Parce que c'est super pénible tous ces petits bouts de fenêtre pas foutus de se mettre dans une seule, et des parcours absurdes pour juste définir des styles de textes à appliquer à une portion de bloc de texte, ou sélectionner une typo avec une preview.

C'est une des rares communautés qui n'a pas migré son forum vers discourse, donc pour échanger avec c'est un saignement de plus dans les yeux. Bref grosse galère.

For the record, I'm fully supportive of #floss and/or #opensource #AI - it's essentially free form input statistical software. Use it wisely, be aware of.confirmation bias, use to augment (not replace) or simplify repetitive/tedious work, etc. Support models and companies that encourage this responsible usage. Model it yourself and disclose responsible usage transparently. #sysadmin It's not difficult, really.

For my shop machine, I'm now actively testing Debian 14 Testing w/ Xlibre and SonicDE. So far, so good. I use this machine for client work and it also gets to be my guinea pig for testing drawing tablet workflows. Both native Xlibre (via wacom) and Gaomon's proprietary driver work. I'm impressed with how snappy SonicDE is - first time using it today. Great work folks‼️

I've looked at Paris's page at https://disconnect.blog/getting-off-us-tech-a-guide/ and I'd like to suggest a slightly different angle. Swapping American spyware for Chinese spyware isn't really a net improvement. Paris mentioned some #FLOSS alternatives, such as #LibreOffice.

I'd say FLOSS is more important than country a project has its HQ in. (Not even relevant for some FLOSS projects)

I've been talking before why money won't solve the burnout problem. But let's for a minute assume that you really wanted to help people maintaining #FreeSoftware by paying them. The problem is that:

1. You have to pay them a living wage.

While all monetary help is appreciated by developers, they need a living wage. Not "that should prevent you from starving to death" but the kind of money that can support a honest (but not lavish) lifestyle: pay the bills, feed your family, cover other living costs such as repairs, clothes, appliances, and let you save enough for future emergencies.

It's simple as that. If you can't do that, they're going to need a dayjob. If they're lucky, it won't collide with their #FLOSS work. If they're not, it will kill them. Or they'll fall somewhere in the middle, slowly burning out until they can neither maintain their projects, nor work.

2. You need to guarantee that the payouts will continue.

People need security. They're not going to stay unemployed, let alone quit their job or turn down a job offer, unless they either have good guaranties or substantial savings (or they're in a really bad shape and wouldn't be able to handle the job anyway). The job market is hell, and people just know that when the payments stop, they may not be able to find a job soon, let alone a good job. Even "passively" looking for a job can burn you out.

So yeah, one-off payments and pinky swears won't do. And it isn't even a matter of whether we can trust you; it's a matter if you'll actually be able to continue paying us. And honestly, I don't really know how to solve that. Perhaps by paying up front, but for how long? Finding a job may take more than a year, finding a good job may be once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

3. It can't end up being a job.

Perhaps most difficult of all, these payments can't really come with explicit obligations. I mean, that's the whole point: you want to support FLOSS, not turn it into a corporate project. You want the maintainer to remain free and enjoy the work. That is unlikely to happen if their livelihood is now dependent on your satisfaction. And even if it isn't, I for example would still feel indebted to whoever's paying me to do FLOSS, even if they really didn't expect anything in return, and would fall into a spiral of guilt-inflicted burnout if I failed to maintain the software satisfactorily.

At ground zero, #OpenStreetMap provided us with the mapping that we very much needed. When I was finally...deployed on the field, nobody was yet able to navigate properly. Along with much of our critical equipment, our dedicated GPS devices were sent somewhere else because the location of the earthquake's epicenter was misjudged, and almost all the personnel were trying to use their data connection to download the same maps over and over again in order to respond to every direction given by the command center. It was in this setting that I introduced a powerful free software tool called "OsmAnd~" (#OSM for Android), along with pre-downloaded maps that I had on my handheld device, which I was using to flawlessly navigate through the city.

When others saw this, it was received by the group as "magic."

"Verbose changes. Nonsensical descriptions. Pull requests contributors can’t explain. AI is DDoS-ing open source software (OSS) with slop, and some maintainers are calling it quits.

As Steve Croce, field CTO at Anaconda, a Python data science platform, tells The New Stack, “It’s having a profound effect on maintainer workload.” In response, maintainers are canceling bug bounty programs and introducing stricter contributor guidelines, he adds.

Some projects, like Jazzband, have been forced to sunset altogether. Jannis Leidel, the lead maintainer and Python Software Foundation chairperson, writes that the “flood of AI-generated spam PRs and issues” made his project unsustainable.

According to Kate Holterhoff, Ph.D., a senior analyst at the consultancy Red Monk, the barrier to entry is now extremely low, making it easier to game the traditional incentive model for participating in open source. As she tells The New Stack, “It’s putting the contract between maintainers and contributors in peril in ways that haven’t existed before.”

Il y a quand même un truc qui me gène énormément quand je vois des libristes conseiller Signal, c'est que même si on passe le fait que c'est centralisé et basé aux États-Unis, c'est ouvertement hostile aux clients alternatifs utilisant leur serveurs (ce qui rend l'intérêt de faire un client alternatif quasi nul), cf. LibreSignal.

Pas sûr que les passerelles soient super bien vues non plus.

Has anyone ever come across an Android media player that's both

1. Open Source (preferrably in the F-Droid store) and,
2. lets you rate (exact scale doesn't matter, binary, 5 stars, whatever) things from the now-playing page and saves those ratings either to file metadata or has a desktop equivalent that can sync them with itself?

I want to be able to quickly go through music and decide if it deserves a closer listen later or is bad and I should just delete it. Mostly to have a sort of pre-screen that I can do easily while on my bicycle (where I need to pay attention and can't dig through menus, but can hit "Like" or "4 star" and swipe to the next track). The only thing I'm aware of that can do this is Mediamonkey (which is not open source).

Seit den Enthüllungen von Edward #Snowden wissen wir: Unsere digitalen Spuren sind wertvoll. Viele große Unternehmen sammeln Informationen – oft mehr, als uns bewusst ist. Spätestens seitdem stellen sich immer mehr Menschen eine Frage: Wer kontrolliert eigentlich meinen #Computer? Werden wir zu gläsernen Bürgern ohne #Privatsphäre für mächtige globale Konzerne oder Schlimmeres?

Jetzt stelle man sich vor, keine nervigen Zwangs-Updates. Keine #KI mit nahmen #Copilot, die einen ausspioniert und überwacht. Zusätzlich zu den ohnehin erhobenen Telemetriedaten, was nur ein anderer Name für Massenüberwachung ist. Keine versteckten Abo-Gebühren oder andere Kosten. Kling zu schön, um wahr zu sein aber genau darum geht es bei Linux. Gewinne die Kontrolle zurück über den eigenen Computer. Sperre unsichtbare Datensammler aus mit Linux.

Linux ist ein Betriebssystem. So wie Microsoft Windows oder macOS. Nur Linux kann sich keine große Reklame leisten und ist deswegen nicht so bekannt. Ein Betriebssystem ist das Grundprogramm des Computers. Es sorgt dafür, dass Programme laufen, Dateien gespeichert und der Bildschirm etwas anzeigt. Linux ist aber anders, da es das größte nicht kommerzielle Gemeinschaftsprojekt der Welt ist. Es ist frei und kostenlos. Jeder darf es nutzen. Jeder darf es verändern. Das klingt unspektakulär. Ist es aber nicht.

Jetzt gerade ist Linux in aller Munde weil im Oktober 2025 Microsoft das Ende von Windows 10 bekannt gegeben hat. Strengere Hardware-Anforderungen von Windows 11 haben sehr viele Computer unbrauchbar gemacht. Dies sind rein kommerzielle Anforderungen, die den Profit von Microsoft steigern sollen auf Kosten der Allgemeinheit und der Umwelt. Der Planet bezahlt für die schillernde neue Taskleiste von Windows 11. Das Ende von Windows 10 muss aber nicht das Ende des eigenen alten Computers bedeuten.

Linux muss keinen Profit erwirtschaften. Es ist der Allgemeinheit und keinen amerikanischen Konzernzielen verpflichtet. Darüber hinaus läuft es erstaunlich flott auf alten Computern. Linux bietet daher eine Alternative. Ohne Konto-Zwang. Ohne eingebaute Werbung. Ohne versteckte Datensammlung und das Ganze auch noch kostenlos. Vorurteile aus vergangene Zeiten gegen Linux sind längst ausgeräumt. Viele Aufgaben sind genauso einfach wie bei Windows oder Mac. E-Mails schreiben. Surfen. Online-Banking. Fotos verwalten. Filme streamen. Alles kein Problem. Linux ist aber längst kein reines Büro-System mehr. Es ist sogar mitten in der Computer-Spiele-Welt angekommen. Linux ist somit ein Statement für Freiheit, Privatsphäre, Umwelt, Nachhaltigkeit, Kontrolle und gegen den Zwang mächtiger globaler Konzerne. Nur durch einen Wechsel auf Linux kann diesen Konzernen die Macht entzogen werden und diese somit zum Umdenken. Digitaler Widerstand kann mit einem Klick beginnen. Dein Computer, deine Regeln, deine Interessen sollten im Mittelpunkt stehen.

Welches Linux man als Neueinsteigender wählen sollte:

Linux ist streng genommen nur der Kernel, der Kern des Betriebssystems. Damit daraus ein Betriebssystem wird braucht es noch eine reihe weiterer Programme und das Ganze nennt sich dann Distribution. Die Distributionen heißen Debian, Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, Manjaro, usw.

• Wer einen aktuellen Rechner hat und nur Surfen, Textverarbeitung und Filme schauen möchte ist am besten aufgehoben bei: Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE), Ubuntu, Fedora und macOS-Umsteiger fühlen sich bei Elementary-Linux zu Hause.
• Bei Rechnern die älter als 10 Jahre sind eignen sich je nach Hardware: FunOS, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, MX-Linux und Puppy-Linux
• Selbst sehr alte Rechner kann man noch nutzen mit: antiX, Slitaz oder Tiny Core
• Gamer bevorzugen für ihre Computerspiele: CachyOS, Nobara oder Bazzite

Linux ist längst im Alltag angekommen. Es läuft auf Millionen Rechnern. Auf Servern. Auf Supercomputern. Sogar auf vielen Smartphones. Warum nicht auch bei dir? Warum also nicht ausprobieren?

Genau hierfür hat sich „End of 10“ (Ende von Windows 10) gegründet. Ein Zusammenschluss aus ehrenamtlichen Computer-Intressierten, die gerne bei der Installation von Linux unterstützen. Wer sich nur informieren möchte bekommt einen USB-Stick mit Linux gratis (solange Vorrat reicht). Damit kann man zu Hause Linux selber ausprobieren und ganz leicht installieren. Alle sind willkommen und man muss kein Computer-Experte sein für Linux. Wer sich mit Linux schon auskennt ist ebenfalls herzlich eingeladen für einen Austausch und eventuelle mithilfe.

Linux ist keine radikale Abkehr. Es ist eine Einladung. Eine Einladung, Technik bewusster zu nutzen. Mehr Kontrolle zu haben. Und vielleicht ein kleines Stück digitale Selbstbestimmung zurückzugewinnen.
