A really impressive organisation I've only just recently become aware of (thanks to recommendations from my network) is the @APC

Here is one of their recent updates about what it takes to resist Big Tech:

- Needs more collaboration between the existing resistance movements

- Networks are being splintered due to external forces; again, a call for more solidarity and support between groups

- More thought and work around building local networks (infrastructure) that is people powered, not dependent upon large organisations (more autonomy)

- Digital violence is often aimed at women and human rights defenders - spaces and operations should be thought of as 'care infrastructure'

- How can FLOSS be more inclusive and to center people at the heart of the discussions around these technologies - including more community building.

I actually put the last bit in parenthesis, in relationship to training data... but in all truth i think this is maybe _the_ most fundamental question Free/Libre #FLOSS software users, authors, supporters and overall communities will need an answer to, in relation to #LLM/#GenAI:

If some code is output by [machine], can one:

- claim to be the sole author of it and chose which license to apply to it?
- declare it free/libre software, IF one cannot prove that it is NOT based, at least in part (training data), on other software that may be released by its authors under incompatible license, or plainly proprietary?

The blunt, unsatisfactory decision that has emerged from #Debian is sorta least common denominator that means something to someone but something else to somebody else... Yet maybe an attempt at a statement: "_irresponsible_ or _non-reponsible_ use of #LLM/#GenAi is not acceptable."

So now would be time for #Debian and #FLOSS communities at large to lead the way and determine: what would be "_responsible use of #GenAI_"?

Is the use of LLM/GenAI "responsible" if:
- it boils rivers?
- it belongs to evil US tech overlords?
- its model is proprietary?
- its training dataset is not public? (then can anything even be Free/Libre software?)

✅️ I am currently in my 20th year in education and over the years I've worked in both secondary and college. I've been a sysadmin longer, having started at the NM Coalition for Literacy in 2000 while finishing college on the "long plan." I pivoted in 2018 back to the private sector and then back again to education in 2022. I've maintained this side company/DBA, Haack's Networking, throughout the entirety and I still have clients to this day that I began with in the early 2000s.

✍️ I've always been struck by the prohibitive cost of software. As a young kid, I remember my father purchased me MetroWorks CodeWarrior for learning C for my LC475 68K mac. I read somewhere in 1992 that I should learn C so that's why I asked for it. Over those next few months, it's hard to explain the frustration I felt at trying to keep the abstractions separated. Open firmware, vs. mac's OS at that time, vs., the IDE and C I was supposed to be learning. It helped at disambiguating abstractions, but was useless at teaching me C. I still suck at C. The package was pretty costly nevertheless.

📻️ While in my early days as a sysadmin, I remember the Adobe suites, Microsoft suites, etc., that we were obligated to keep up to date and purchase for our non-profit. We also had tons of macs, 5 laser printers, early flat panel displays, an early NAS, and a hard firewall (Sonic something). It was not sustainable for this non-profit whatsoever. After the prior Director left - who I still consider a mentor and friend to this day - others took over who made an effort to reduce spending and keep the tech lifts in line with reality. It was slow and painful, but/and I learned that costly is not better.

FIND yourself a a linux distribution or BSD that does reject AI; use it and donate to it.

If you can't move your daily driver move a secondary machine. Tinker with it, fit it into your life where it makes sense.

YEAH the linux kernel has slop. Most programming languages have slop. Most desktop environments have slop, you will have dependencies that are still slop. This is a big problem; there is no magic off switch to fixing this overnight.

We are in the early days of dealing with a contaminate that polluters are actively dumping into our digital environment.

It is going to take a long time before anyone can truly be slop free.

But support, and invest in the folks doing that hard work which will build a slop free future.

👀 That reminds me that I still need to implement a "secure" way for clients to change email passwords via Roundcube. For now, this remains internal/managed - which is fine for these use-cases. Credentials are shared via pw managers that haacknet+client share access to.

📜 Alright, only 10:08am at this moment and got four fifths of the work done. But/and, now, I need to get the remaining parts built out:

- Roundcube, including sieve
- Autodiscovery (DNS is cached already)
- PfLogsumm setup/cron
- Virtual aliases and gen. review

😭 After that, success will be had and billing can be done - with proper testing and verification of services first, of course! Another one done, more to learn ... okay, back to user pw mgmt.

Super proud that #Debian affirmed the responsibility of each individual human in producing responsible code that meets objective guidelines. This, along with the Conservancy's recommendations, is the right direction. The next step is making #floss AI accessible and equitable for all social and economic groups. The privilege of those who nay-say #AI from a position of power, degrees, economic status, etc., is peak hypocrisy. They are free to have those biases and opinions, but/and denying those rights to and/or taking aggressive direct action against the underprivileged and underserved is where I draw the line. This technology needs regulation and controls - not fear mongering and access barriers.

I've just stumbled across something whimsical, and I love it.

It is a package called xcowsay. Its sole purpose is to display some text in the form of a speech bubble, coming from a graphical cow. For example:

produces the output shown in the screenshot. A typical usage would be displaying text from the fortune package.

If you prefer, there is a terminal version called cowsay, that draws an ascii-art cow.

✍️ We are pleased to announce that we secured this excellent condition used GPU for the PeerTube instance. After @oemb1905 traveled up to Brown Rice Data Center and installed it and passed it through to the virtualized PT, Lord @sen took care of customizing the JSON for the ffmpeg logic and did some tinkering under the hood so that PT would be efficient in its choices. Efficient hardware AV1 transcoding is now live.

💡 We still have slots open for registration and the quoted post below shows our starting quotas and limits. More is available upon request or for justified use-cases. Premise: LLM-gen-AI is here to stay.

Therefore, gnulinux devs ultimately have two logical choices: a) reject OR b) accept. If you reject, you are ultimately - in my opinion - denying or encouraging the denial of helpful tooling for lower SES groups. Upper SES groups already have access to these tools ... choosing to abstain is a position derived from privilege. Lower SES groups need access and equity to the same tools that academic/elite circles have access to. This is why we need fully floss AI that's accessible, uses a non-token and non-gouging pricing model (or is free / donated), and relies on distributed leadership and community support/building. Which tells me how much codeberg is about community and less about the technology. which is very good. That is the way to go, in a moment of division in the FLOSS community, there is still this nice place that for sure will be a safe space for many.

I think the most important question is: why does anyone comply with what one incurious, self-centered, and self-important man, Linus Torvalds, says?

Why is that most important? Because Linux does not belong to Linus Torvalds. It belongs to the world. Torvalds only gets to dictate if the people who are best-positioned to take that power from him fail to do so. From where I sit (as an outsider), he should have been removed from the project, or at least have his dictatorial power removed, long ago, and the primary problem is that there is no structure or will to actually do that.

Under these conditions Linux is a hierarchical, and therefore right-wing, project. The project allows a single man to dictate the future evolution of a global good. Let's drop the illusion that it is "free" or "open" till that changes.

1,5 milliard d'euros par an. C'est ce que les administrations françaises versent chaque année à des éditeurs logiciels extra-européens.

La commission d'enquête de l'Assemblée nationale vient de déposer son rapport après six mois de travaux, 45 auditions, 112 personnes entendues. Menée par la rapporteure Cyrielle Chatelain et le président Philippe Latombe, elle sort du flou des chiffres qui méritent qu'on s'y arrête. Trois d'entre eux résument à eux seuls notre position : → 80 % des achats logiciels des administrations centrales partent chez des fournisseurs américains. Dépendance quasi totale à Microsoft, VMware, Oracle. Ce n'est pas une tendance, c'est une architecture. → 264 milliards d'euros : ce que les entreprises européennes dépensent en logiciels et cloud américains chaque année. À cette échelle, la dépendance n'est plus un risque, c'est un modèle économique — le leur. → 60 000 demandes de divulgation adressées par le gouvernement américain à Google au seul second semestre 2025. Plus de 5 500 à Microsoft. Taux de satisfaction : 89 %. Vos données « européennes » répondent déjà à une autre juridiction. Et pendant qu'on débat, la commission range désormais la coupure d'accès — le fameux kill switch — au rang des risques avérés, plus des hypothèses d'école. Philippe Latombe a d'ailleurs ouvert les débats en citant un cas survenu cette année. La souveraineté d'un hébergeur ne se négocie pas. Elle se vérifie ! Le rapport le dit sans détour : l'UGAP a dû reclasser des groupes « européens » domiciliés en Irlande… mais américains dans les faits. L'adresse de facturation n'est pas une nationalité. Pour une direction informatique, l'urgence n'est pas d'attendre une loi.

C'est d'adopter dès maintenant la bonne grille de lecture : #SecNumCloud comme critère d'achat, vérification réelle de l'éditeur au-delà de sa domiciliation, et intégration du risque de coupure dans les plans de continuité. La dépendance se chiffre. La question, maintenant, c'est de savoir ce qu'on décide d'en faire.

I remember waiting patiently until the next Byte magazine came out, or rather waiting until we could go somewhere to get the latest. I remember even more recently waiting two weeks for the next GLUG so I could ask someone a technical question that no one else I knew would know. And that small meeting was all I could ask. If I asked too much, I was told to read the documentation - usually a cover tbh for the person not knowing themself. I once spent four months researching how to properly pass a shell through screen via a cronjob. I spent over a year debugging why gnu tar functioned differently in a script than bsd tar (this is still the case fyi).

But yeah, all AI is just a scam and even if floss it has absolutely nothing to do with Equity or Access. I've never seen a more poorly argued shame campaign with such narrow sightedness. Not surprisingly, most I see making this claim are either super technical people working in tech, with droves of people in a supportive peer group to assist them. The others? Completely non techy bootleggers using AI fear to sell their activism to the nearest buyer. Obviously, this is a simplification because I'm bitter seeing all the terrible and ignorant anti AI posts.

Lots of talk, lots of opinions ... But I can assure you no one was there when I waited for byte. No one was there when I tried to figure out how to add a database to my BASIC car program on an Apple ][ C in 1989. No one was anywhere to be found when I struggled with MetroWorks CodeWarrior and C in 1992 on a 68k Mac. No one cared or helped when I tried to setup doveadm a year ago. No one cared when I tried to figure out how these advanced PayPal email scams worked and develop sieve rules to catch their failures. No one cares. Trust me.

Now that devs have perceived competition, AI is the boogey man. But/and, for an over talented grade school teacher and Junior college professor who knows a thing or two about maths, generative AI is a blessing. Just like any stats software - you validate the results lol - you don't blindly trust or give in to confirmation bias. People act like they care now ... but once they finish pounding their ideology into the echo chamber, they will also not help. I can assure you of that. And for those that want to be there, they either will lack the time, or lack the specific expertise to help with the lift.

I remember when my wife got her first M.A. and took Statistics with Brother Bryan, a Lasallian monk and professor at the old College of Santa Fe. She enjoyed it very much and learned a lot. Bear in mind, though, this was her third degree at that time and her second time taking statistics—unlike many of the other students.

One of the things he required was that the students do all of the Stats 1 curriculum with pencil and paper—no technology. Why? Because it was his belief that students were being deprived of authentic learning by leveraging tech.
In that course, students were required to calculate the test statistic for Pearson’s r by hand, derive the ordinary least squares regression coefficients and fitted values manually, integrate the normal curve to produce mean and proportion estimates while deriving the formulas themselves, and do the same for hypothesis testing of claims—deriving the relevant formulas by hand before applying them.

Now don't get me wrong—some theory and understanding of the roots and premises behind where formulas come from is obviously relevant. But we don't use repeated addition for multiplication when students reach Calculus. And we don't do the limit of the difference quotient for each differentiation by hand every time we need to differentiate a function.

I find the modern discourse on #AI at present to be much like this. It seems to be a majority of non-technical and non-mathy folks exhibiting reactionary fears. Those fears are then amplified by a few zealot reactionary academics (very mathy and very technical) but/and ... who remind me of the "must do every calculation by hand" crew — not unlike Brother Bryan. I'm sorry, but it's okay to use software to speed up repeated tasks. That's, in fact, the original reason they were developed.

When you first look at these moratoriums, community meetings, and so on, they seem like very authentic and well-meaning public action campaigns. Who wouldn't want to be made aware of big tech playing bad in the space, scuzzy marketing, bad licensing, use in education/kids, etc.? Those are valid concerns. But when pressed about free software AI — whether current offerings or future expansion — the hostility surprisingly increases. Why? It's the horse-and-buggy camp again. Time to do stats by hand and use the limit of the difference quotient instead of the chain rule. Reactionary fear. Sad to see...

A curious irony in the fact a great many of the free and open source platforms championing digital sovereignty are themselves utterly infrastructurally dependent on big tech apparatus GitHub, itself owned (and mined) by the ruthless and closed source market monopolist Microsoft.

We're gaining ground fast, but we've still got a way to go in the truly sovereign platform space. To use is to support, and that means any point along the supply chain.

👀 This maintenance will reduce total core consumption on the host by 8 vCPUs and reduce RAM usage by 16GB. Furthermore, these instances will switch from testing to production usage and public availability.

‼️It is expected that this transition should only take 6-12 hours, however, it could take as long as 72 hours if DNS caching gets delayed. Prepare for down time accordingly.

Windows #users are still sitting in their pods, downloading the latest mandatory #update called KB-Whatever-Again, wondering why their printer suddenly speaks ancient Sumerian.

Linux is not perfect. Sometimes Wi-Fi drivers behave like a side quest in Dark Souls.

Sometimes you spend two hours fixing a problem just to feel smarter than everyone else.

But that is the point. The red pill was never about comfort. It was about #freedom.

And freedom means occasionally reading a forum post written by a Finnish guy in 2007 who solved your #problem and vanished forever like a #Jedi master.
