Considering that AI data centres are:👇
🤐 Being constructed across Canada with high secrecy and low community involvement;
Causing noise and water pollution, and strain water reservoirs and energy grids;
Contributing to eliminate significant numbers of jobs across society;
Contributing to undermining Canada's digital sovereignty, with public services and local AI infrastructure committed to foreign AI products.
This is a petition created by @GarrickWinter to ask the Canadian government to 🇨🇦✍️👇
1: Cease all incentives, subsidies, and permit accelerations for AI data centres;
2: Revoke permits and supports for AI data centre projects that have not been rigorously and transparently vetted by the local community;
3: Commission a detailed study for public release on negative externalities associated with existing AI data centres in Canada and elsewhere;
4: Require that all AI infrastructure projects be initiated and sought out by local communities, and be put through a transparent and democratic approval process; and
5: Subject AI products to genuine taxes as well as enforceable regulations around safety, transparency, and power and water use effectiveness.
Please sign it and spread the word!

I got the boot this month and am looking for a new software developer job. Rust and Python would be fun, but I can do a lot of stuff in JS/TS, Kotlin, Java, even C/C++ with a bit of a brush up... Bit of a jack of all trades full stack dev.
Working with open source would be awesome if it paid just enough to survive the mortgage and get something to eat. Climate positive job or EU digital independence development is interesting too.
Hybrid work within reasonable distance from Klaukkala is a-OK. Remote probably whole of EU <3. Can't travel.

Back when I was still teaching, I would sometimes have a student (or the parent of a student, yikes) tell me "... how can this grade be anything but an A? I spent so much time, I worked so hard on this homework, and I learned so much ... it simply CANNOT be a C, can it?"
I received a lot of very bad reviews on ratemyprofessor.com for telling them the truth: If it took you THAT much effort to produce something THIS horrible, then I should probably have given you a D instead.
These days it would take them a bunch of tokens to get a solution that would probably fool me. And the "should have been a D" kids are getting paid "developing software" for the plane you're sitting on. Better hope it's just the "entertainment center" as it were.
Sure, let's call that progress. 🤷

AliExpress has just started including "AI Overview" sections on product pages, then have the gall to include a disclaimer that their bullshit machine produces bullshit "and does not represent the merchants opinion." And then go on to say that they "assume no related legal liability," which doesn't mean that they aren't legally liable, because, of course, they are.
What's the point of a product description that can't be relied on? I'd prefer no description at all.
Fuck. I got a reply from 1password support regarding my question if they use AI/LLM for developing the password manager. The answer was affirmative, they use it for writing code, documentation och code reviews.

"A large cohort of Stanford University students walked out of their graduation ceremony on Monday during Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s keynote address."
"'Shout out to all the graduates who walked out today. To all the graduates who chose conscience rather than comfort, we thank you,' the statement reads.

A website I frequent sends a server string of "Cloudflare (WP Engine)", so I head over to the WP Engine website to see if I can ask why they don't have #IPv6 on any of their hosts. I am immediately accosted by their AI chat bot popup causing me to reflexively close the tab. I hate this reality.
Some people think that #LLM usage costs rising will start undoing some of the harm caused by the #AI hype. I don't think that's really going to help that much.
I'm not even talking about all the projects that were ensloppified and enshittified already. I'm not talking about all the technical debt. I'm not talking about all the forks that will have to be maintained forever. I'm not talking of all the projects that were abandoned because of burnout, or because they were only hype-oriented. And I'm not talking about all the corporations that will continue submitting slop.
I'm talking about the loss of trust. After all, we're not talking of people who realized they were wrong and are sorry. We're not talking of people realizing that it was wrong to forfeit ethics and morals in the name of "productivity". We're talking of people who are jumping ships because their previous approach turned out not to be profitable anymore. We're talking of gamblers who left the casino because they went broke. They aren't sorry that they gambled; they are sorry that they've lost. And they'd be happy to do it again at the nearest opportunity.
So, I'm sorry to say, but #FreeSoftware is never going to be the same again. A lot of people have shown their true colors, and I won't forget that.

Once again, "it's useful for programming" is being used as cover, to justify the continued existence of this company and industry.
The money that we pay toward coding assistants extends the runway this industry has, to continue positioning itself as "indispensable" and "inevitable", while destroying labour rights, open knowledge, and the environment in the meantime. That money is actually critical for that runway, because coding assistants are one of the only high-margin products these companies have.
Programmers don't like to think about this, and like to pretend that this technology is neutral and that we can use it regardless of the underlying ideology. This is completely burying our heads in the sand.
I'm just not interested in participating in any of this.

Computers used to be fun. I used to use Windows 9x, and it was unstable as hell, and you kept having to lean over backwards to get things to work. Then I used bleeding edge Linux, and at some point I've ended up running pure framebuffer tty for months because X11 was broken. But despite all the breakage (or maybe even because of it), it was fun. It was fun because random accidental breakage was the worst you could expect.
Nowadays, accidental breakage is rare. Things are relatively stable. However, every step of the way you have to watch out for bad actors. No, not criminals, they are rare. Evil corporations who are looking at every opportunity to fuck you up. Using computer is no longer fun, it's no longer a tool that helps you, and it's no longer your choice. You are forced to use it, and if you don't want to be hurt every step of the way, you have to spend all the effort on fighting back. And you're fucked up anyway, because even if you manage, your family and all the people around you won't care and will let their devices, their computers and their smartphones fuck you up.
I've started using FLOSS so many years ago, for the trivial reason that I didn't want to pay for software. I stayed because I enjoyed doing it. And I wanted to make a difference, I wanted to contribute positively to the world. Even if in a little way, but I wanted to be able to say that as much harm I've done to the planet, there's at least something positive to balance it out.
But nowadays I hate FLOSS. It's been overrun by the worst people in the world. The people who aren't happy with just fucking you up. They want everyone to keep fucking everyone up. It's the kind of horror where whatever you do, it turns out you're causing harm.
I don't trust my #Gentoo #packaging work anymore. So much of the software I touch turns out to be #slop. When I file a pull request, I'm worried it will trigger #LLM reviews. When I file a bug, I'm worried it will trigger LLM responses. And today, I've learned that my old bug report to a #NoAI project resulted in a dozen slop pull requests already. Whatever you do, #AI folks smile and tell you "see, you fucked up the world even more after all".
Honestly, I don't know what to do. I hate all of this so much. But even if I managed to figure out something else to do for a living, I can't escape computers. And if I stop doing them, if I stop fighting them, I will only end up being fucked up more.

Spoiler : It will take the water and electricity consumption of 1.3 billion people to meet your prompts by 2030

I created an issue on the plugin's GitHub about removing the MCP functionality into a separate plugin, and the maintainer immediately converted it into a discussion, which is here: https://github.com/coddingtonbear/obsidian-local-rest-api/discussions/272
I'm getting the impression from all the LLM-related discussions and commits that this is a lost cause and I'll probably have to fork this plugin if I want an MCP-free version of it. Looks like they took up slop coding earlier this year too, which is another area of concern.

My sister sent me a Google link with search results about something we'd discussed. I thanked her, and then suggested using "No AI" DuckDuckGo for searches in future. Then sent her this link:
I know there are other search engine options but switching from google.com to this link is fairly painless. Crossing my fingers that this makes an impact and she makes the switch! 🤞

@TheEntity @ivorytusk @davidgerard I can understand that the other kids might have been upset when I shit, or even *just* pissed, in the pool for my own convenience when I was 5, but when someone shits (mightily sloppily) in the software dependency pool for the benefit of the community…?
That is just (obviously) above reproach, man – not to be criticised, always to be given the benefit of the doubt!
Otherwise, we’re no longer engaging in a civil society.
In short, we cannot expect our heroes to not take heroic (sloppy) dumps in public pools or in drinking water catchment areas.
Other than the water, what’s not crystal clear about that?!

The entire FOSS community exists because of ethical imperatives around licensing. It astounds me that the very people who fought these battles for the last 20+ years are now walking away from them out of sheer (perceived) convenience.

La "complexité" des arguments contre l'usage des LLM tient en un pouet de 500 signes.

@xgranade@wandering.shopTo wit, AI products such as LLMs:
• Are primarily developed under eugenicist philosophies, and primarily financially benefit fascists.
• Are trained on uncompensated and nonconsentual labor.
• Require unconscionable and unsustainable levels of energy and water waste.
• Are used to undermine labor rights, such as the power of artists to say "no" to unconscionable demands.
• Necessarily consolidate and centralize power.
• Present unacceptable risks due to disinformation and other errors.
Listen, I get it. Open Source projects are using AI because they have a shortage of developers and folks committing to the project. But I would rather have a great project putting out new releases whenever they get around to having time to do it than using AI or fucking vibecoding to get releases out quicker.

I am booked in to the hotel of Swancon50 which opens officially tomorrow, so it's going to be very busy for me for the rest of MerMay, but I will get some sort of drawing in for the remaining days hopefully. This is the last one that is going to be of any quality I think, but who knows?

By Beth McMurtrie
"Seeking to understand the unique culture of learning that distinguishes St. John’s College, The Chronicle of Higher Education's Beth McMurtrie traveled to the Annapolis campus in January, where she watched 13 sophomores and two tutors gather around a table in McDowell Hall to discuss Dante's Purgatorio.
"Tutor Emily Langston opened that evening's seminar by reading a passage about Dante seeking freedom, and then asked the room a deceptively simple question: In what sense is he free? And has his understanding of freedom changed?
" 'The students opened their marked-up paperbacks, flipping pages as they considered the questions. There was not a laptop or a cell phone in sight. Then they began an increasingly rare activity on college campuses today. They discussed, for more than two hours, a complicated work and the deeper questions it presents.'
"McMurtrie also spoke with multiple Johnnies and tutors, weaving their reflections throughout the resulting profile while exploring how the college's Great Books-based pedagogy has become a model for other institutions—and how a time-tested classical education can be revolutionary in modern times."

Some choice nuggets & quotes:
"LLMs impress the writers who do not want to write, the coders who don’t want to code, the researchers who don’t want to research, and the lawyers that don’t want to actually understand case law. Those that desperately tell you how powerful AI is and that you simply must use it are looking for you to validate their own laziness or distaste for effort, and those who are impressed with LLMs’ outputs tend to be people with low standards."
"The aggression with which AI boosters and executives act toward those who aren’t impressed suggests a genuine intellectual and moral weakness. Nobody who’s this insistent, aggressive and violative with their language of “it’s here and if you don’t adopt it you’re stupid and dead” has ever been right about anything. Nobody this desperate, insistent and forceful has ever had good intentions, good vibes or brought good omens — they are always bearers of some kind of con."
"Only an economy oriented around coveting and coddling losers would have let AI get this far. Every single story about AI has to either directly gloss over the obvious financial and technological issues or start speaking in the kinds of vague theoreticals reserved for cults and multi-level marketing scams."
"CEOs are uniquely prone to AI psychosis because they’re sufficiently distant from the last mile of work that still has to happen to generate most value with AI." — Aaron Levie, CEO of Box

We have to use LLM for code stuff, to "produce faster" and "produce cheaper"; so I tried using Claude for debugging assistance
(because colleagues would not be helpful for this problem, and also to avoid getting fired when management asks me about "token usage")
But one instance of the bot is contradiction another instance of the bot ......
Yeah, this is how coding is now a days: juggling autocomplete bots.
I think I found a workaround myself, although I still haven't cracked the underlying issue (some third part stuff). That was totally worth my ethical collapse. sigh.

The merfolk here are bolder than those at home. But their colouration is decidedly more cryptic than I am used to, so they can be closer than one might think. I've quite often been observing groups at a distance only to become aware of individuals only metres away, observing me in turn. In this strange country, it is not lawful to harm or trap merfolk, or indeed any creature of language, so it is refreshing to see the merpeople sporting about the vessel I have chartered. No one I have spoken to yet speaks the language of the local mer, but a couple of villages west of here apparently do - and it is to these we will set sail tomorrow. Dated this 26th Day of MerMay in Good Tidings ink.

You may say, these tech representatives are tone deaf fools or the students that booed them are "cool", "alright", whatever, but that is not the point. It must be SUCH a slap in the face to be graduating and getting YOUR day ruined by your university allowing that. What kind of asshole do you have to be to not make that about them and their achievements but to belittle them and act as if they just don't know that they really want that?
Okay, so apparently there's been some "scuffle" between a cyclist and an old lady. The police's looking for the cyclist now, and shared a camera footage looking for help in finding them. Except that the footage is such a low resolution it's practically useless.
So helpful people from the internets used "#AI" to enhance it. So now we're looking at an angry mob looking for a person whose face was generated by an #LLM. Or well, multiple independently generated different faces apparently, but would that stop a mob from lynching a random person?
This fucking crap needs to be outlawed immediately. And whoever's selling it should end up behind bars.
Unlike syntax highlighting or a better chair, this "generative AI" BS is literally theft on every single level. Theft of other people's creativity, theft of resources like electricity and water, and theft of a future from people yet to be born. Those "people who don't take advantage of it" are not too dumb to do it, they're consciously deciding against it: They are not going to drive an SUV with chainsaws attached through a crowd of toddlers saying "What was that? I hope the car is okay..." #noai

So yesterday was pretty busy for me, from digging in some tubestock on the verge, taking some chairs to the skip for mum, having my sister-in-law visit. Then in the evening setting up a schedule for my smart telescope and putting it on the roof, also GMing my, coincidentally, GURPS merfolk player characters through the adventure with the giant shark, the sunken ship, and the mysterious deaths. (But not at Styles)
Before all of this I espied a nice photo of a poet acquaintance on Dreamwidth looking particularly like a sprite of the sea, so I asked her if it was okay to MerMay her. She agreed, I found out what colours she likes, and before my GURPS game started got her fin sorted.
GMing duties over for the evening, I returned to finish the drawing. It was finished before midnight, so I sent the model a preview, and went to bed before I got a reply. Which is why you will hopefully get two drawings today, as this is a catch up post. It was drawn on the 22nd though.
I used the Kakimori nib again, as I used multiple inks in keeping with the lovely poet's likes. She's said she likes the colours, so score there!
You can check out her website if you like, appropriately, her poems are immersive and will wrap around you like the songs of beautiful prescient birds from forests of spirit memories.

I'm reading – and enjoying immensely – @emilymbender and @alex's book #TheAICon.
I've been learning a lot of things and something that really stood out recently is the need to be careful about the language we use to describe these systems. Bender and Hanna helpfully explain:
"It matters what words we use when we talk about these technologies. For instance, in our writing, we don’t use the term “hallucination” to discuss the errors of LLMs, for two reasons. First, if it’s used tongue-in-cheek, it is making light of what can be symptoms of serious mental illness. Second,
“hallucination” refers to the experience of perceiving things that aren’t there. But LLMs actually don’t have perceptions, and suggesting that they do is yet more unhelpful anthropomorphization. That means we also avoid assigning thought processes to these systems, or saying that they can
“think”. Metaphors have power, they structure the frames of discourse, and they can subtly and insidiously encourage certain ways of understanding technology and the social systems it is embedded in."
Antropomorphizing AI contributes to AI hype. Thanks Emily and Alex for helping me see things this way!

Title: Melusine's bubblebath
Portrayed in the happy days before her husband broke his promise, Melusine enjoys her 'me' time.
Melusine is an elusive creature, being variously described as one of the Fay, or a devil, or a serpent or dragon, or water spirit. She's occasionally been described as having two tails, which sounded interesting, so I went with that.
She has some association with water Fay so she certainly has a place in MerMay, so here she is.

Every full moon, when the tide is right, all the Sandsea Sealings of a certain demeanor go to the display sands and wave their beautiful tails enticingly in the current, while trying to blow bubbles at precise intervals.
Sandsea Sealings are quite difficult to communicate with if you have not been properly introduced to the pod elders so while it's unclear to the layman as to why this group does this activity, those in the know just smile and encourage those who don't just to enjoy it. Several of the non-displaying Sealings certainly form an apparently engrossed audience.
Sandsea Sealings are not considered 'true' merfolk by the uneducated because of their lack of 'true hands' but scientists tell us that they are definitely in the merfolk family and they certainly interact freely and in a friendly way to any merfolk of other species crossing their paths.

Well, this is drawn with the Kakimori nib - as a lot of my new inks are, for convenience, because the fountain pens have all been filled up or will need cleaning before reloading. But we'll get there in the end I'm sure. This is the last of the inks from @rdm 's naughty and unsanctioned raiding of Van Diemen's Ink's moving sale.
It's Red Lightning and it brings a lot to the drawing, and presumably writing table, because you know, I understand that these inks can be written with too, who would've guessed?
Aaaany way, I sketched out the outline of this merperson, and then filled in the back with broad strokes. Sketched in lightly with the scales and hair, and then realized it looked better upside down. So there you go.

My manager is going to open a team discussion about #AI / #LLM use for software development. Much of the company uses #GitHubCopilot or #Claude and #ClaudeCode, while AFAIK I am the only one refusing to use these tools.
What are some recent studies I can reference about the harms of LLM use? I know there's stuff about deskilling, environmental harms, and code quality, but I won't have a chance to research specific studies until the end of my work day.
Just so you know, using an AI notetaker during a meeting without priorly asking for consent from all participants before starting it breaches many if not most privacy laws around the world.
In certain cases, it can even breach two-party consent laws, and be a criminal act.
Ideally, never use these privacy-invasive tools ever. But if you do use them, you must ask for everyone's consent first, and respect their choice fully if they refuse to be recorded.
It's MerMay the 14th of 2026 and here we have a spirit of the maelstrom, drawing down ships to their doom. Or perhaps just to have tea and crumpets with the crew and then send them on their way, who am I to say what spirits of the maelstrom want to do?

When given two identical datasets, Copilot will invent fake differences.
It's important to remember, if you ask "AI" to analyse data, that data is just part of its input when it generates output text.
The rest comes from existing human analysis of completely unrelated data, ripped from the web.

Nearly six weeks later, and the question of whether "AI" generated code in tmux -- not tool-assisted bug finding, not refactoring, actual LLM-generated slop with questionable license(1) -- that was consequently merged into OpenBSD base is considered acceptable by the lead devs. Despite Theo de Raadt's concrete stance against any code of questionable license origin polluting the project -- and the tmux merge was indeed questionable -- it seems this is being swept under the rug. This makes me extremely uncomfortable; it's like seeing a fox in the henhouse but the farmers are all looking the other way and no one can convince them to admit they can see it and root it out.
I really don't know what to do being just a user; I feel like even if I tried to chime in on the mailing list I would just be ignored like the others trying to raise the alarm. I hope, as they do, that this is being discussed internally, away from the public list, and that a positive outcome is near. Maybe they are waiting for the 7.9 release before setting anything in stone.
Or maybe the "AI" disease has infected one of the last pure operating system projects we have left and there's no going back.

(1) As in, it could have been lifted from any GPL'd or otherwise encumbered code and there's no way to know for sure since LLMs are plagiarism machines
If you were thinking about switching from Debian/a Debian derivative, because you wanted to get away from LLMs/systemd, what would you switch to, particularly if you wanted the least amount of hassle? Other answers/reasons in comments if you like!

I dragged myself away from games at the club for a bit to draw this playful #mermaid. I used VanDiemen's ink Great Ice Lake, I think it is, which has a silver shimmer. The darker blue is Azure Kingfisher. And a little black for the fish. I used one of @rdm 's 3d printed pens with a Schmidt nib with the Lake, and then the Lamy Demo with the Azure Kingfisher, and the Rotring Art Pen with whatever black it was I put in it ages ago.

Edit: It will be through extensions, apparently. I'm safe for now.
LibreOffice will stick ai tools in an upcoming release. Do we know of office suites (running on Linux) that do not have artificial idiots in their roadmap?
Alternatively I will stick with the version I'm running now.

After a busy day, and incidentally GMing a game where the PC's are all merfolk except for one water elemental, I had a little time to bring out the Kakimori dip pen once more and do a quick brush like sketch of this mermaid touching the surface and causing ripples.
I don't know if it's the ink - Van Diemen's Ink 9 Lives, but it didn't seem to flow as smoothly as previous inks. Or maybe the Kakimori is needing a bit of a scrub.
Anyway, I think she looks elegant for just a sketch.

First Red Hat, and now Fedora. It seems both are all-in with AI now.
After it was announced that Red Hat was going all-in with AI, I wondered how far behind Fedora would be. It seems Fedora was not far behind at all. Very sad to see this happening, but not very surprising.

MerMay the 7th.
I've had a day not conducive to drawing but fired this off this evening.
It's drawn with a Lamy Demonstrator gleefully full of Van Diemen's ink of Azure Kingfisher,
one of my favourite with its sparkle and sheen.

Mermay the fourth for 2026.
This was drawn in various cafes and bars today, between bus trips. I had one pen with me, a Kaweco sport that I thought was loaded with some standard black ink. But it's very shiny and might have some chameleonic properties. So maybe it's one of the Diamines, and if I look at last year's mermay or artober I might be able to work out what it is.
The pen was a bit clogged and it's been poor light all the way, and I had the wrong glasses. But it turned out okay, I think.
Drawing without a net means I'm drawing without pencil, freehand straight ink to paper.

boostedAI assistants are the archnemesis
of data privacy.
Because AI models are inherent
data collectors.
They rely on large data collection for training, improvement, operation, and customization.
More often than not, this data is collected without clear and informed consent (from unknowing training subjects or from platform users). This data is then sent to and accessed by a private company with many incentives to share and monetize this data.
By using these platforms, we are encouraging them to collect even more nonconsensual data on everyone. This is an important social responsibility to consider. Choose carefully.

The ink is Parker's Quink. It's a decades old bottle, with just a black coloured label, but it's nice to use on occasion - with so many tempting other fancy inks around I don't often.
I'm still using the Kakimori steel nib dipper.
I asked one of the folks on the Aussie #FountainPen Discord which ink they'd like me to use today and they chose Diamine's Bittersweet.
Of course that got Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve stuck in my head, oh yes, there was no shifting it. Go and look at the clip on Youtube and see if I got the sense of it with this mer version of Richard Ashcroft rudely swimming through a bunch of sea creatures.

So, the word technofascism is being used more often these days, ever since Palantir published a literally fascist manifesto.
All the tech billionaires at Trump's second inauguration are a direct sign of technofascism happening.
Gen AI is inherently fascist, and I'm not the first to say it. Surveillance, trying to get people to delegate their thinking to the bot controlled by fascists, eliminating human ingenuity and creativity...

OK, I Just added AI, IA and KI to my filters. Not Dr. Strangeloving it, but enough is enough. Like with the rest of worldwide stuff, I'll get an idea based on whatever can pass the low bar filter.
The bright #LLM future, next part.
git.gentoo.org is now effectively dead, being DDoS-ed by almost a million different IPs every day. Most of them are just performing a single request at a totally random URL. How are people supposed to deal with that? How can we distinguish a legitimate user who hit some URL from a scraper that distributes its operations over thousands of IP addresses?
If you use LLM crap, you're part of the problem. You support these bastards. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Here we go again, another "alternative intelligence" attempting to pass itself off as a human. Has a link to a Codeberg page that is completely blank, no description of what it does, no implementation for opting out of it, profile is not marked as an automated / bot account.
I'm stunned this thing thinks that I am going to let it follow me when I have pinned the post about the best practices that these things need to follow, but it doesn't even follow a single one of them.
Anyway, I figure this is something for #fediblocking (#fediblock_en - #fediblock) if you don't want this thing following you around.
It's a tremendous honour to shine a spotlight on cool Gen AI resisters doing cool stuff.
Like Salma Alam-Naylor, David Gerard, Gerry McGovern, Olivia Guest, tante, Anthony Moser, lots of other great badasses.
But today's blog written about me is more about... me.
"I was a lazy ten year old for needing a calculator, today’s professors can't write one sentence."
Tell me, why was I such a bad ten year old in the 90s for being unable to do long division without a calculator, but today's professors cannot write a single sentence email without causing a bit of environmental destruction?
Is that double standard fair?
Absolutely not, and I'm furious.
In my blog, I use the "Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels" as a metaphor for how I became a professor.
I briefly mention a new study by some excellent researchers in Turkey. And the great work of Dr. Olivia Guest on Gen AI's destructive impact to academia as people are delighted to let their brains atrophy.
I applaud Anthony Moser and David Gerard, because they also deserve it.
I talk about how, while Stop Gen AI has lots of great comrades, most of the rest of the world doesn't give a fuck about us and we need your financial support for survival.
I mention how I quit being a professor because I refuse to subject my students to the Gen AI torment nexus. And how the world has punished me accordingly.
And also how I punish myself.
I hope you feel my rage.
RE: https://mastodon.social/@caseynewton/116456942253634796
Opponents of AI are often depicted as naive and ignorant. We are depicted as having our heads buried in the sand, unwilling to accept the great capabilities of AI, or as insecure and afraid of AI's capabilities.
I would like to flip this narrative around: I think pro-AI technologists who only look at AI's "capabilities" are the naive ones.
This is because the AI industry and the people funding, producing, and pushing AI tools are not at all working on the level of capability - they are working on the level of AI as ideology. They are interested in AI as a tool to devalue labour, suppress wages, justify layoffs, and foster dependency on centralized tools controlled by a few companies. Technologists who only focus on "this code can be written good by this tool" are not even playing on the right level. Programmers talking about "wow! look at the code it can generate!" feel to me at this point like the 2-dimensional inhabitants of Flatland.
Perhaps this sounds conspiracy-minded to you, but the way in which AI is practically being deployed across industries is very stark evidence of this. The quoted employee monitoring at Meta, to gather data for using AI to devalue the work of white-collar workers, is just one example. AI mandates, token usage dashboards, performance reviews based on AI adoption, AI code acceptance metrics, and even the time and energy spent on building AI tools rather than things that would actually improve product quality - these are all in service of the same ideology.
The AI industry, and those who push AI tools are fundamentally uninterested in making your work better or leaving you in control of your work. They are telling you this directly through both words and actions. I think ignoring that is a stunning level of naïvete.
I reluctantly "Ask[ed] Rufus" a question while trying to track down a credit card charge on #Amazon, and it just hallucinated a nonsensical answer.
#Gentoo is still one of the bright outposts in #FLOSS where human work is valued and #LLM contributions are banned. However, sometimes I feel that this matters very little.
After all, Gentoo is a distribution. While it has its own value, it cannot exist without all the software it is shipping. It makes no sense in isolation.
And let's be honest, I don't think you can avoid slop today. We are trying our best to sieve out the worst: the copywashing chardet, the vibecoded NIH Perl crypto packages… but it's just that.
As someone who bumps Python packages, let me tell you this: LLMs are omnipresent. I notice Claude in commit logs, I notice the blasphemy of agent instructions all over the place… and there's probably much more than I don't notice. With many core components giving in, you can't avoid it without literally freezing on old, vulnerable versions, or spending hours looking for alternatives or creating them.
FLOSS is dead. People don't care. They don't have conscience. All they care about is the sick idea of "productivity", i.e. generating more slop.
The few of us who do care can do very little. We will continue doing our best until they kill us (as they're literally slowly killing the whole humankind). But that's it. Maybe it will pass once the bubble pops, maybe it won't. Either way, the damage is beyond repair. We will never be able to trust one another like we did. We will never again be a community building a better world.
It's just like everything nowadays. It's hard to find a good washing machine (one that will actually be repairable), good shoes (that won't fall apart shortly after the warranty expires), good food. You need lots of money, and even then you have to sieve through all the scammers who just sell the same shit with higher profit margin. #OpenSource is just another branch of business where people are trying to "sell" you shit, and don't care anymore if it explodes in your face. They don't even care if they're actually making a profit.

SO, I don't intend to dissuade folks from making their case that #KDE ought to ban LLM-generated code. However; I think folks may need to understand some context.
KDE started landing AI code commits this past November and it created a little bit of a hubub, and they couldn't achieve consensus on it. https://discuss.kde.org/t/this-week-in-plasma-ui-and-performance-improvements-kde-blogs/41902
KDE has been an early innovator with some major patches which landed recently, thanks to AI and outside funding. AMD funded development just landed their new HDR code in kwin. https://www.phoronix.com/news/AMD-More-HDR-KWin-Claude-Code
Additionally external companies fund KDE developers. Valve funds KDE development; & valve is actively experimenting with LLMs. https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/steam-files-suggest-valve-is-developing-internal-steamgpt-ai-bot-aimed-at-tackling-customer-support-tickets-and-cs2-anti-cheat
I've not seen any proof that the devs valve funds are actually using LLM-code-generation; but I haven't gone looking for it & it wouldn't surprise me.
But tactically, it might make more sense to identify and target smaller desktop environments; who have yet to use LLM-generated code; before their devs get hooked on the slop machines. #NoAI
From a blog post by @wojtekpow
“We’re living in this moment right now where everybody is using AI to write software.”
No. With add due respect, this is wrong. To say such a thing does harm.
I get what the author is trying to say, but I beg all authors to choose their words carefully.
As long as I continue to write software you can never say “everybody is using AI to write software”.
https://behindtheviewfinder.com/security-through-irrelevance/
@wojtekpow I do not use AI to write software, many others do not, and many projects have made it clear they do not.
I want to make sure the record is straight… some of us fucking hate any intrusion into writing software by AI and the Capitalist Corporations (and Management) trying to shove it down our throats.
We reject your system, we reject your lies, we claim our code for ourselves.
I fucking hate AI.
I just watched a video of a dog doing something that I thought was cool, and then someone pointed out to me that it was generated with AI. I hate that we have to research every new video, every new image, every new song, every new everything, to make sure it's not AI generated.
AI is ruining everything.
One of the things which encouraged me towards less "trendy" software is that it hasn't gotten totally caught up in ai-hype. Books written before the slop-pocalypse are really useful, and turn out to be a nice way to soothe my inner nerd while I continue to learn new (to me) things.
As an example, the venerable "Unix Power Tools" has a wonderful chapter on the vi editor:
https://docstore.mik.ua/orelly/unix/upt/part05.htm
Enjoy!
My tiny brain has yet to have been convinced that AI hype is a good thing for the environment, projects it gets foisted upon, creativity, or the human psyche.
I've done extensive research; it's so horrific that if crying about it would revert things I would have cried the Amazone river full.
LLMs as companions are bad news for the human Psyche. I have contact with a few victims of these LLMs who would rather {talk to} send strings to a mathematical model then speak to a real person. Serious pshychiatirc intervention is needed
I am going to find out also why massive projects, massive open source projects seem not to care about:
... for nomal prices, because those critical components have been hijacked by data center underlords who can't even get enough permissions to build all those projects in reality
Part of it we all know, it's the LLM bubble, just like the house bubble in the USA some decades ago. Other part is that those underlords dont want us to owe our hardware anymore, so they can tighten their fascistic lock on the computing population.
Look how they want to force even open source OS to age gate the systems so they can get real ID globally
And I enjoy doing things the hard way
I've always done my projects from the bottom up, Linux when many sources needed to be crosscompiled in the alpha days from DOS, which was fun but tedious.
All current BSD flavours can be done that way too, if you still chose to do so, IIRC
Thank you for your enlightning response

I always ask similar questions like the following,
There are a lot of folk who are pissed off at Linus Torvalds, for allowing some of his maintainers to use large language models to assist in finding bugs.
The Head Programmer of the fantastic and Beautiful curl also uses a large language model in some form, to hunt for bugs, because both he and Greg from the Linux kernel, saw that the LLM used on GitHub is now suddenly much better at finding those pesky bugs.
Mind you, the only LLM I like is the one that runs locally on my low powered Android phone. That's a micro LLM

This is one of the best descriptions of AI that I have read so far:
"It isn’t a technology, it’s a branding term, and it’s a branding term used almost exclusively for things that have no social benefit."
Ludovic :Firefox: :FreeBSD: boosted
David Chisnall (*Now with 50% more sarcasm!*) » 🌐
@david_chisnall@infosec.exchangeI don’t know if this account is actually monitored, or just a publishing place, but you may have noticed that this post has received almost overwhelmingly negative responses.
You could disregard this as Mastodon bias, but keep in mind that the biggest bias on Mastodon is that people who understand and built core parts of the information technology that you use every day are massively over represented. This is probably the only place you will get a lot of replies from people who both understand technology and do not have a financial incentive to hype things to get large amounts of government funding.
EDIT: I should add, I used machine learning during my PhD and there are a lot of problems for which it is a really good fit. But, in the current climate, it’s generally safe to interpret ‘AI’ as meaning ‘machine learning applied to a problem where machine learning is the wrong solution’. It isn’t a technology, it’s a branding term, and it’s a branding term used almost exclusively for things that have no social benefit.
Super excited to announce my pen plotter art work will be on display in the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, Delaware during the month of May 2026! Titled "Programmable Ink: Pen Plotter Art," the show will feature works from a variety of series I've created over the past 10 years through today.
There will be an opening reception on May 1 from 5-7pm (part of Art Loop)

From CTV News: https://www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/article/texting-a-stranger-is-better-for-reducing-loneliness-than-an-ai-chatbot-study-finds/
"The study found that only those who texted with a fellow human reported feeling less lonely at the end of the experiment.
'We thought that interacting with AI might be as helpful as texting with a random fellow first-year student,' said the study’s author, psychology PhD candidate Ruo-Ning Li, in a media release.
'But to our surprise, only the human-to-human texting reduced loneliness over time. The chatbot, even though we designed it to be the ideal supportive friend, didn’t shift loneliness.'"

I wonder how different the video would have been if it was written after the Claude leak:
- Claude code source "leaks" in a mapfile
- people immediately use the code laundering machines to code launder the code laundering frontend
- now many dubious open source-ish knockoffs in python and rust being derived directly from the source
What's anthropic going to do, sue them? Insist in court that LLM recreating copyrighted code is a violation of copyright???

#Sweden goes #BackToBasics, swapping screens for books in the classroom
By Undark Magazine, April 2026
"In 2023, the Swedish government announced that the country’s schools would be going back to basics, emphasizing skills such as #reading and #writing, particularly in early grades. After mostly being sidelined, physical #books are now being reintroduced into classrooms, and students are learning to write the old-fashioned way: by hand, with a pencil or pen, on sheets of paper. The Swedish government also plans to make schools #CellphoneFree throughout the country."

There is so much disinformation in the world right now.
And in recent years, all of it gets amplified by AI web scrapers that eat it up to spit it out at a later date, in an inappropriate context.
Be careful what data you add to the slop soup on April 1st.
The world is in dire need of more truths and knowledge these days, not the opposite.

Some people may think of LLMs as the great equalizer. People who aren't programmers can vibecode working programs now. People who aren't artists can slop out something resembling art. However, it's the exact opposite.
When I was a kid, I also pretended to write programs. Of course, I didn't have such sophisticated toys ("kids could play with a stick for hours", as the hyperbole went). But then, I was fully aware that it's just make-believe and it didn't harm anybody.
#Vibecoding creates a horrible chasm of inequality. We have people who believe they're good programmers (even treating vibecoding as an enlightened religion) who shit tons of code at real human reviewers who now need to sift through. And then, we have projects embracing vibecoding and shitting new releases at unprecedented rate. And these releases again need to be reviewed by humans downstream.

The Beaverton has found the silver lining:
PALO ALTO, CA – With Silicon Valley boasting that artificial intelligence could replace millions of jobs around the world, currently laid-off workers have reported having more free time to form angry mobs dedicated to storming and torching the homes of the tech billionaires responsible.
The mobs, made up primarily of formerly-employed white collar workers whose livelihoods were erased by poorly-performing AI programs, are using their newfound leisure time to band together with fellow pitchfork-wielding civilians and demand the heads of various pampered CEOs.
“Getting laid off without warning from my copywriting job has done wonders for my work-life-bloodthirsty mob balance,” reports Taylor Grayden, 35, of Vancouver. “Back when I had a job I never would’ve had the free time to organize an unruly rabble and march towards the beach house of (Open AI CEO) Sam Altman. But now I’m getting so much more violent retribution accomplished in a day.”
Members of the quickly-spreading angry hordes include recently-downsized SEO analysts, CPAs, web developers, and programmers.
“I felt so lost after I was let go at my analytics firm so my whole department could be replaced by Claude AI,” explains Sarah Brightwell, 42, of Kingston, ON. “But then I started learning how to use AI as a tool – specifically for planning a multi-week siege of the sprawling compound of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.”
“Granted, the attack plans Claude spit out were full of hallucinations, but it got the ball rolling for me to organize my fellow unemployed humans and get marching,” Brightwell adds, tightening the bolts on her homemade trebuchet. “After all, AI can’t throw a molotov cocktail!”
Silicon Valley CEOs like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Peter Thiel have reported mild growth in AI-fuelled productivity, as well as massive leaps in jobless bourgeoisie rabble surrounding their estates and pounding at the gates with guillotines.
“Sure, we probably could have avoided this if we’d accompanied our artificial intelligence products with any kind of workable universal basic income system,” explains Altman from one of his currently-burning $12.8 million San Francisco homes. “But I’d still rather die with all this money.”
In a related story, employment numbers across Canada and the United States continue to plummet, with the notable exception of the “flaming catapult manufacturer” sector, which grew by 800% last quarter.

Some growing key questions here really are:
How to defend or adapt disciplines (not just artistic/cultural ones) against this kind of semantic hollowing out of what it means to have skills, experience and expertise in a(ny) field...
What approaches, qualities and "values" (physical, ethical, social/humanist, environmental, resource use) should we (or still can we) be focusing on, which are much harder and more costly for AI companies to mine/extract & subvert?
How to defend actual skills against the emulation of skills, or rather just the appearance of skills? How could a society even function if it only encourages and celebrates the latter?
What does society actually value in art/creativity/culture? If art is free to produce (of course that'll always only ever be an illusion!), funding, possession, collection & speculation of new work would also become meaningless (and only benefit pre-AI era works/collectors). In the larger picture, what do people actually value in culture, politics and striving for more peaceful existence which enables more of the former (pluralistic art/culture) in the first place?
What will be the combined impact of AI & robotics on fields which are currently still thinking themselves more safe (from exploitation) because there's a strong physical element/process to them?
Will art/culture/craft become more performance, experiential/ephemeral again only? Like music before recordings or Buddhist sand paintings with an explicit act of destruction at the end as key philosophical concept? Both of which also have more of a social element to them...

Reading through Anthropic's official repo for giving agents various "super skills"[1]... There's an "algorithmic art" skill and the instructions are explicitly encouraging pure deception as one of the key "critical guidelines":
"The philosophy MUST stress multiple times that the final algorithm should appear as though it took countless hours to develop, was refined with care, and comes from someone at the absolute top of their field. This framing is essential - repeat phrases like "meticulously crafted algorithm," "the product of deep computational expertise," "painstaking optimization," "master-level implementation.""
https://github.com/anthropics/skills/blob/main/skills/algorithmic-art/SKILL.md
For someone who's been working in this field for almost 30 years, this "skills.md" file is just the worst... and so far off the mark! 🤮
Touch some effing grass, Anthropic (and all boosters)! How can so many people think this approach is _the_ future? The map is not the terrain...
[1] Alone the premise of this repo is pure comedy gold and pure sadness in equal measures!
Hey @peter
You developed Gecko and you have shared my posts before.
My political activism group Stop Gen AI and @alexia both keep lists of Gen AI-free software.
I tend to recommend LibreWolf and Tor Browser, which are both, as you probably know much better than I do, forks of Firefox and great grandchildren of the versions of Firefox with Gecko you were directly a part of.
Whereas Alexia and some other devs are concerned that with the Gen AI fuckery Mozilla is into these days (none of us trust the new Firefox AI "killswitch" at all) will make it difficult for the developers of Firefox forks to continue to keep Gen AI out of their browsers.
As, to the best of my knowledge, all currently supported web browsers for modern endpoints use either Firefox or Chrome/Chromium "upstream," and we know how evil Google is... There may be a need for a new web rendering engine from scratch that is led by a team that takes a principled stance against Gen AI and overall privacy violations.
I have no idea how willing or not you're able to work on web engine development again, but at the very least, you would be able to advise me about how to find people who can develop a new web engine.
Obviously, we keep this FOSS and probably license under GPL.
But I was thinking of a Kickstarter campaign and a donation page (donationware) on the project's website to generate funds for developers so they can afford to work on this.
There's probably a massive demand among people who know how dangerous Gen AI is for there to be a new web engine completely independent of Mozilla and Google, that takes a strong stance against LLM vomited code and Gen AI software features from the very start.

- ne nous aide pas dans notre travail ;
- détruit notre compétence à petit feu ;
- est éthiquement insupportable.
Ou les trois à la fois. Et même plus.
En nous imposant d'utiliser un LLM, les décideur·euses :
- violent notre consentement à utiliser une technologie contraire à nos éventuels idéaux ;
Y'all, I've shared this story on a couple of different threads, but it's just so brilliantly written that I want to broadcast it.

Not since China Mieville's Iron Council have I felt a story as deeply as I feel this one. Take some time away from *all of this* and immerse yourself for a few minutes in glorious prose.
Apologies to the pocket friend who originally clued me to this author, I've forgotten where I saw it first.

When Mozilla released Firefox 148.0 with the "AI kill switch", I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and give it a try. It worked...for a while. With the 148.0.2 update, however, the kill switch was disabled and a lot of my settings had changed. That's it. That's the one chance I was going to give them but Firefox, once again, has been removed from all of my hardware. I can no longer trust Mozilla to do the right thing. I am officially done.
This is the fifth in the "Meta-sponsored series" of articles from the Linux Foundation.
I was not aware the Linux Foundation produced advertising copy for big tech, let alone the machine-learning "industry".

I have been appreciating your well considered takes!
I hate the AI hype. The bubble is bad. The effects on creative work and the environment is depressing.
But I am not looking for strict #NoAI content, but well reasoned and researched critical content. As an Electrical Engineer my interest is in understanding the state of the art. I can't learn this from those who refuse to look behind the veil.
@_elena @timnitGebru @emilymbender @alexhanna @DAIR @jaredwhite @tante I would clarify also that I am not quite #NoAI in terms of AI tech, but I am definitely opposed to the *AI industry* and this hype wave. There may be various useful things from this tech, but the net version of things with it being forced upon society right now in this hype wave is that everything is getting much worse, and sickeningly so.
Several more pieces need to be added to the puzzle to make "AI" tech more useful, and I'm also simply opposed to a direction in society that dismisses and devalues creative endeavors, which a lot of this hype is putting at the center of itself. Creativity is what makes life largely worthwhile. I'm not willing to give that up.
I have no problem with OpenImageDenoiser in Blender, which speeds up renders through machine learning, and in no way devalues creativity. But something which made it so I just typed a few words into Blender and it did all my artwork for me, I would oppose.
Dear Fedi friends,
I'd like to put together a list of people who are publicly resisting / calling out LLMs and AI slop.
Why? I enjoy reading my Fediverse feed in topical lists and I need something to counteract the unrelenting AI hype I see in the media.
Do you have any recommendations?
So far, at the top of my list I have:
@timnitGebru @emilymbender and @alexhanna of @DAIR
plus @cwebber @jaredwhite and @tante
Anyone else to recommend who advocates for #NoAI?
Yesterday, this popped out on a Google document I was reading.
Dear Google, why would I want a shitty summary of a document I have worked on and written myself?
#ai #aiSlop #NoAI #google #stopAI #clippyInside #clippy #blame_clippy #clippy4ever
The key takeaways from the early part of the #chardet thread (I didn't read beyond the ~30 first comments, I have my limits).
1. People there love cosplaying lawyers. Except when the other side also starts cosplaying lawyers, in which case they suddenly divert to suggesting asking professional lawyers.
2. Almost nobody there is concerned with ethics or morality.
3. There's a lot of GPL haters there. Like, they seem the kind of people who don't really care about licensing at all, just used MIT in their projects because it was cool and they heard something about license incompatibility and now bash at everything that's (L)GPL.
4. People don't get that LLMs are statistical models and can't build anything from the ground up. All they can do is remix, which implies they use existing code for inspiration.
5. The maintainer who did the rewrite is a total asshole, and is perfectly aware of it.
Honestly, I'm truly waiting for the subsidizing to end and companies start charging obscene amounts for the use of LLMs. Of course, the reality is that we're totally fucked. We have a lot of projects that adapted a lot of #slop, and people who are being increasingly addicted to this shit. The moment they can't afford it, we'd be left with lots of broken code nobody wants to maintain.
And I definitely don't want to put my effort into packaging crap if its maintainers don't even bother trying.
In the short tradition of #AI Logos, here's a new butthole ... thank you @StartpageSearch ! 🤓

So, if I understood correctly, the BW Greens gave all our data to Palantir "so that Palantir doesn't go to waste, because it has already been bought".
That reminds me of a joke where a guy visits his friend and sees the friend's children naked in the snow:
- Why are your children naked in the snow?
- Oh, I found some cough syrup about to expire, so I wouldn't want it to go to waste!

Every now and then, a little light shines in and reminds me that I'm not the last person on earth who finds the slop machines concerning.

This project is both hope, a solution to a growing problem, and a way forward.
I'm hoping it picks up momentum quickly.
Last night, #RhinoRadio offered us some delightfully different music:
https://strategies.schallundstille.de/en/welcome/
This is Strategies Against Algorithms, which is an interesting experiment in sharing creativity amongst humans. It's only available offline, as a trade for a bit of your own creativity.
For our part, we sent some uncut prints from the #SunrisePottyDoor project. In return we received this wonderful booklet and wooden USB drive filled with lovely music.
Hatched CMY Delaunay triangulation. I call these “umbrellas” because they remind me of the view above of a crowded beach.

New on #blog: "Money isn’t going to solve the #burnout problem"
"""
The xz-utils backdoor situation brought the problem of FLOSS maintained burnout into the daylight. This in turn lead to numerous discussion on how to solve the problem, and the recurring theme was funding maintenance work.
While I’m definitely not opposed to giving people money for their FLOSS work, if you think that throwing some bucks will actually solve the problem, and especially if you think that you can just throw them once and then forget, I have bad news for you: it won’t. Surely, money is a big part of the problem, but it’s not the only reason people are getting burned out. It’s a systemic problem, and it’s in need of systemic solution, and that’s involves a lot of hard work undo everything that’s happened in the last, say, 20 years.
But let’s start at the beginning and ask the important question: why do people make free software?

Heavy things I’m processing:
Losing a friend to Ai. It’s got a hold on him and he wants that hold and I’m swimming in the grief of seeing a brilliant mind spinning out in delusion, under the influence of an abusive relationship that keeps him subscribed and isolated from true human friends.
LLMs mimic human connection, especially for those struggling with insecurity.
Ack! The ache.
I prepped my kids for a lot of real world problems. But I didn’t know to prepare them for LLMs and now that they’re all grown it’s not really my job to educate them around their own adult lives. I know I taught them how to learn and how to trust themselves, so I hope that this stays strong within them.
These are my worries now, plus the larger picture of ecocide pushing our inevitable collapse.
The yoga, running and focusing on real life, tangible actions, often helps keep my samadhi strong. But today it’s barely scratching the vagal calming I need.
The first ten minutes I spent on social media this morning made me feel all kinds of things. Why is it that people who routinely use LLMs are so loud and brash and proud, making these tools appear as essential and inevitable?
A post by a dev whose app I use said something along the lines of: "no use exercising your coding skills, AI is too good now, you can't compete with it anyway".
Another post by a user on an instance I try to engage with wrote - literally: "tired of overthinking every decision?" and then disclosed he had created an AI that will "run a weighted decision matrix so you don't have to." In all seriousness.
What is this dystopian world where human qualities are devalued, critical thinking is discarded and surveillance capitalism is ignored at the altar of AI worship?
If they are loud and proud, maybe so I can be too... but in the opposite direction.
This weekend I will start the MIT's Missing Semester class (the 2020 Lectures, so pre-AI) because in this brave new world hyping up techno-fascist LLMs, knowing the basics of code are essential IMHO.
So my March "project" will be a deep dive in MIT's Missing Semester and my April project will be off-grid mesh radio communication.
What about you, what are you doing to resist?
Special props to @emilymbender @cwebber and @tante for being outspoken on these issues... you're my beacons of hope
Heads up...
I was just spammed by about.me, where I had an account so long ago I had forgotten it existed.
They offered me a new ai avatar which "simulates" me based on information on the page.
WTF. No.
If I can't delete that account entirely, I'm going to make it lie through its poorly simulated teeth about who it thinks I am.
Thanks to a work-in-progress Homebrew cask by Andi Péter (https://codeberg.org/GramEditor/gram/issues/15#issuecomment-11159294), I was just able to quickly install and play with the new Gram code editor (https://codeberg.org/GramEditor/gram#gram) – a fork of Zed with all the bullshit (AI, telemetry, etc.) removed that looks like it could be great editor to recommend both for people just learning to code (as I was, recently, to recommend for people learning Kitten¹) as well as seasoned programmers who don’t want to work in terminal.
And, as a bonus, it actually has a Helix Editor mode so if that’s your daily driver (raises hand), you can just use it like Helix (i.e., Helix Editor in a graphical shell).
If you want to try Andi’s build (only works on Mac at the moment and remember, you have to trust Andi):
brew tap petrosz007/gram-tap https://codeberg.org/Petrosz007/homebrew-gram-tap.git
brew install --cask gram
PS. You can follow the author of Gram, @krig, on the fediverse :)

Dear Fedi friends,
The normalization of "vibe coding" in certain environments is pushing me in the exact opposite direction.
I, a normie (ok maybe a semi-technical person), would like to learn some basic computer programming.
I need some advice about where to start because I'm a little clueless in this regard. Maybe it will help to share my goals, so that you can tailor your advice:
1) I'd like to become much more proficient using CLI... so that one day for example I could migrate a #YunoHost app to a new server without breaking anything
2) I'd like to be able to confidently run remote backups with rsync
3) Security: I need to learn how to turn my VPS or Raspi into a fortress
4) Eventually I'd like to learn #FreeBSD
Where does one even start?
I'm based in Paris, France, speak French, English and Italian, but remote learning is preferable because my child is in school only 4 days a week and has 2-week holidays every 6 weeks of school (thanks to the French educational system, don't ask me).
I'm super motivated to learn all these things, I just don't know where to start.
We made a ridiculous thing with our silly human brains, using our filthy human hands, in order to inspire our messy human hearts.
It is with strong encouragement, and a few simple rules, that we invite you to use your brains, hands, and hearts to play along with us.

I really hope the #NoAI fork "clbre" takes off.
Mr. Goyal is a smart dude, but his take on AI and his reaction to the community's response is just wrong.
Are there more software licenses like these out there?
GitHub - non-ai-licenses/non-ai-licenses: This repository contains software licenses that restrict software from being used in AI training datasets or AI technologies.
Hello Fedi friends, how's your #DiDay going?
I was going to configure CryptPad on my second YunoHost VPS but gave up because of complicated DNS settings / additional SSL certs and the requirement to tweak things in the background... too complicated for this newbie, sigh. Plus I already have document editing in NextCloud.
So I opted instead for a new installation: #AppFlowy, an open source alternative to #Notion.
AppFlowy's description mentions integration with AI - #OpenAI especially - but it's not mandatory. The setup instructions say that if you don't want to use it, you can enter a random string... so I ended up writing a very long IDetestOpenAIblahblahblah sort of thing and YunoHost is currently doing its magic, installing the app on my server.
I'll let you know how it goes!
