The prompt today is Book, so let me introduce you to this little chap that we're starting to hear a bit more around here at night - the Southern Boobook. A lot of people think that the 'Boobook' sound it makes is actually being made by another famously muppet like bird, the Tawny Frogmouth, but no, those sound quite different. (The big nightjars known as Tawny Frogmouths are also called Mopokes, mistakenly again, the sound of the Boobook is being misattributed. They look even more muppet like than these birds.)

When the European colonists came, the (apparently) cuckoo like call at night popularized the topsy turvy nature of the country to them - seasons reversed and cuckoos calling at night.

*This* is a Southern Boobook, and in the days before digital cameras we actually saw one sitting on a low branch in a tree by the Karrinyup library which we thought was hilarious when it was pointed out to us in retrospect. Might have a print photo of it around somewhere. I tell you, the White-Cheeked Honeyeaters were going berko, that's one way to notice a roosting predatory bird around here.

Huh, I should've had it reading Islands of Angry Ghosts, a Southern Boo-Book!

Here in Whadjak Nyoongar Boodjar, Southern Boobooks are known by some Nyoongar people as Nyawoo-Nyawoo, and that's what's taught in the LOTE classes in schools, but what I was taught by Auntie Sharon in Nyoongar Language class was Kookoomet, so that's what I use. To the south east, you might hear Goobayin.

Drawtober the 4th.

Drawn swiftly with the Kakimori nib, using a new ink we got from the Pelikan Hub this year, a rather beautiful one call Brandy Dazzle. It's so pretty it even tempted my ink roller husband @rdm to fill a fountain pen he also won in the raffle with it, and he's autographed at least one of his books with it, so he must like it!

Anyway, the subject was mushroom, but at this time of year - Kambarang - my tropical waterlily is more likely to be emerging than mushrooms around here, so here you go. Not pictured, the mat of algae that is also developing in my pond at this time of year, I'll haul it out tomorrow. A quick drawing, again after a long day, but I'm happier with this one than yesterday's one.

Drawn with a Kakimori dip nib for the Pelikan Apricot Achat, Pyrite and Rose Quartz inks, and with a Pelikan Twist for the Aventurine. Blending the Aventurine and the Pyrite with the Kakimori was very easy and I really liked the effect and the shade was very close to the leaves in the sunshine.

I'm roughly working through it for this year's stab at Drawtober/Inktober because the drawesome community on Dreamwidth is pretty cool. But, most of them are in the Northern Hemisphere which is not where I am. So I'm playing fast and loose. Today's prompt is Sunflower, and the closest thing to me at the moment sunflower wise is this plant which I'm growing on my verge. It's commonly known as pigface. Overseas it's called sea fig. It flowers about now and the fruit will develop through Kambarang and continue to ripen in Birak.

But It is a relative to a naturally occurring species, which some of the Nyoongar people call Beyen. It's an important plant to them. So I'm calling this Beyen-mokiny - similar to a Beyen. You can certainly eat the fruit of it, it's very nice! It's said you can eat the leaves cooked, maybe raw, but I haven't tried them. Wild Food in Australia said they were yucky but the fruit was great. Another use is it's great for burns - spread the pulp of the leaves on a burn and it acts in a similar way to aloe vera. Better in my experience, it's better. The endemic one is pink, the introduced one is yellow, but can have pink and apricot tones, I hear it crossbreeds readily with the native one.

Here in South Western Australia we are entering our warming part of the year, of our 6 seasons 'Kambarang' is the most well known, and loved, for its profusion of wildflowers. I hope to get out there and draw some of them for you during this event!

Nasturtiums are not native to this country, and indeed can be quite invasive in some places, but here in my front garden they suppress weeds and have warm colours from pale yellow, to very deep red. They are starting to become less rambunctious, a sure sign that the warming weather is on the way.

I don't think I've viewed this ink in sunlight before, it seems to have some chameleonic properties.

I tested a Gentoo Linux installation and got stuck at the Grub part and I bailed out for now. DId an OpenBSD installation which went fine. Getting disk encryption to work was easy during installation, unlike a few years ago. Did a NetBSD installation and that didn't go too well but later I found out I missed a step in the installation. A new installation went fine. Then there's ChimeraLinux which I liked when I tried it a long time ago. And I like Haiku though as long as it is a single user (root) OS it is not ready for everything.

I had a realization today while waiting for my coffee. I was standing there, scrolling through my phone like everyone else, and I felt this sudden, overwhelming wave of relief that I am, for all intents and purposes, a background character in 99.9% of the world's lives.

We spend so much time online, especially here, in the fediverse, crafting a "presence." We curate our bios, we worry about our instance's vibe, we debate the ethics of our server choices. We are constantly performing citizenship in a digital town square. And I love it here. It feels more real than the corporate algorithmic feeds.

But there is a profound peace in realizing that the barista doesn't care about my last boost. The person walking their dog doesn't know my stance on database migrations. To them, I'm just someone in a slightly wrinkled tshirt waiting for a latte.

I think we need to romanticize being ordinary more. Not in a "give up" way, but in a "you are free" way. You don't have to be a thought leader. You don't have to have a brand.

You can just be a person who likes coffee and has a weird amount of knowledge about 90s synthesizers. The pressure to be "seen" is a trap. The joy of being "unseen" is a superpower. I hope you all get to be a background character in someone's day today. It is lovely here ❤️

Hi - just reading this discussion, I disagree on this point.

As a reviewer, I want to know what decisions were made - sometimes line by line. Why is this a bool? Why was a thing chosen to be a function and stdlib not used? Why use a file not a buffer?

When reviewing generated code, there were no decisions. Questions about design choices are often answered with LLM generated text which *looks* like reasoning, but isn’t.

At the other end of the scale is TDD built code that’s gone through multiple loops of Red Green Refactor. Here asking questions brings back detailed answers about why certain things worked or didn’t. Why things were mocked. Why extra layers were added or removed.

When we know about why code is the way it is, it increases quality and maintainability - that’s why we care about how it was made.

For Logseq that would probably be the "OG" (or 1.x) branch. The 2.0 "DB" branch has reportedly 80% of code "written" by "AI".

So I know which version I'll keep using.

So, my move to a BSD isn't going as quickly as I would like, and I wanted to get off of Debian since the whole vote to go pro-AI debacle. I figured moving to a Linux distribution that has a very strong anti-AI policy would be the right choice until I can get a BSD installed properly on my desktop or extra laptop. More than a year ago, I tried @elementary. It's an awesome project but I could never get my workflow working with the desktop environment. Most definitely not the fault of Elementary. I just have a weird workflow. Earlier today, I decided to give the latest release another try. I'm going to keep it on here and actually work with the desktop environment, instead of giving up after a day.

The project is staunchly anti-AI. And that is important to me. I know the Linux kernel is tainted but unless we want to fork the kernel from a version prior to Torvalds allowing the use of AI, we're just going to have to deal with it. I don't like it, but I'm no developer and who in the world would want to take on a forked project as big as the Linux kernel? Yikes!

Anyway, I'm really liking how I have Elementary setup on my ThinkPad T14 and I'm going to keep using it for now. Who knows? It might keep me on Linux with one piece of my hardware even after moving to BSD.

As many of you know, I've been getting back into running BSD after 20 or so years away from it. I'm wanting to get NetBSD running, mainly because of the no-AI policy, but I've been struggling and its frustrated me a bit. Well, to be honest, quite a lot. To get BSD running on my desktop, laptop, and small server, and so I can move away form Linux, I'm going to go ahead and get FreeBSD up and running on my hardware. I know that they have a questionable AI policy but this will get me over to BSD and then I can move from there. Plus, FreeBSD has some really, really good documentation to get me started.

A small reminder from the stubborn little human still sitting here translating things:

Translation is not a word-swapping exercise.

It is not:

> word → machine → other word → congratulations, you have a translation

Languages are weird little ecosystems. Meaning lives in context, tone, register, culture, implication, rhythm, ambiguity, and all the things that happen between the words.

A human translator notices that.

A human translator can look at a sentence and say:

“Technically, yes.
But nobody would actually say it like that.”

And then fix it.

We know when “interesting” means interesting, when it means *hmm*, and when it means *this is absolute fucking nonsense but I am being polite about it.

We know that a joke can die horribly in translation.
We know that politeness has different temperatures.
We know when a sentence needs to breathe.
We know that sometimes the correct translation is not the most literal one, but the one that makes a human reader understand exactly what the original human meant.

AI can generate language.

There are forks of the #GameOfTrees version control system popping up merely because of worries that the project might eventually succumb to accepting LLM-generated contributions, then ending up on other people's lists of #noAI LLM-free alternatives.

Fork the code as much as you want, but please don't let your potential users hanging when important issues get fixed upstream, and keep in mind that I don't work with LLMs, have never even once asked an LLM for anything, and I don't intend to start. I don't believe the other developers involved are all as pristine as myself, but I've met most of them in person, do trust them, and have never seen anyone commit code which looked like they didn't write it.

As a community we are losing trust in established projects within the FOSS ecosystem very fast right now. I understand and share many of the concerns about LLMs, but the trend to quickly fork projects out of spite and fear without communication is also worrying. If you maintain a list of recommendations, please ask upstream projects which do not already have an obvious pro-LLM stance before recommending forks with little to no track record, especially when the software in question might handle sensitive data.

In my search for a Linux project with a strict no-AI policy, I have, thankfully, found a short list. One distribution on that list is @gentoo. Just not sure I'm up to getting this running. I may have to give it a shot, though, since the only BSD I have found with a strict no-AI policy is NetBSD, which I'm not sure is any easier.

But doing the right thing isn't always easy.

I'm dismayed that the three systems and communities I love the most, Debian, FreeBSD, and Slackware, are falling into the trap we might call "Uncanny Valley as a Service".

Debian has their pro-slop policy now, and FreeBSD and Slackware both have influential developers who are pro-slop. FreeBSD is shooting for a "balanced" policy - but how do you balance the copyright and license violations, the cognitive harm, and the climate impact against a dubious "convenience?" And I don't expect Slackware will say anything formal.

I'm hoping I can rekindle my fondness for NetBSD, and I've probably got Gentoo in my future for desktops. I know I can live with NetBSD and if I set up a local binary build server I can minimize the energy cost of having to compile everything for Gentoo. (Maybe if I figure out the implications of the USE flags from default/linux/amd64/23.0/desktop/gnome that'll end up being reasonable. I'm not a G.N.O.M.E. user. I can't understand anyone thought this looked good. A school building is drawn, but it's not his school. The school's logo appears 4 times, and every one of them is different. A student drawn has 6 fingers. Stacks of books are drawn with subjects printed in the top side (yes, on the top edge of the book, on the pages).

But nevermind the slop. This sends the message to students that it doesn't matter what they learn in school. AI will do it all for them. Be lazy like we were. You'll still get a pass. Oh and we have an art special program (visual, theatre, musical), but our students' art doesn't matter.

Slowly weaning myself off of #Fedora - starting with pruning the packages I maintain.

It's been a good run but I want more time to contribute to non-corporate #Linux distributions / #Unix OSes, especially those with #NoAI policies or where there is space for bottom-up changes.

I will likely still be around for at least a year - I still have a long standing pet project I might now have time to push, and existing committee and work related commitments - but I am starting to get used to not thinking of myself (mainly) as a Fedorian...

Made good friends along the way, almost no regrets... but when your #DayJob hat and your community hat feels increasingly indistinguishable, it... eventually grates. And the difference in ethical and philosophical outlooks harder to ignore...

Things may be worse than I thought... I was tasked with doing some "online searches" for a method of attaching things to paper and came across multiple results that just have to be AI Slop photos showing off products.

Like, the parts of the web I typically hang out in do not have that level of shit...

I don't often listen to corporate broadcast radio, but today one of the stations in my market were using the phrase "guaranteed human" on most of their bumpers.

Maybe 2 out of 3 yards in my neighborhood have anti AI/data center signs in their yards.

Very few things unify people to this extent. Free software "leaders" are on the wrong side of history on this issue and need to get out of the house more to understand why.

What are the most important selection criteria for you and how do they do against those?

Do you work as a professional developer/sysadmin/devop etc?

Does your employer knows you work on Debian, even if in your out-of-office hours?

If so, if your employer let you work on Debian, it's just because you are aligned with the company interests enough to bring such interests in the context of #Debian.

I don't have numbers either, but my bet (based on what I observed in other projects) is that most independent #Debian Developers were in the #NoAI camp.

Note that the corporate capture of Debian has been ongoing since years (recall #systemd?).

And each of these "divisive" vote makes some independent devs leave, increasing corporate influence.

The outcome is sad, but much expected.

I'm struggling to understand why AI is so popular in the software development community. Especially with Open Source Software developers. These very developers were creating wonderful, beautiful things before AI. I would call what they created, well, art. Who cares if they're pumping their projects out quicker? Who cares if we get a new Linux kernel every couple of months? Release a new kernel every year. And I say this for every Open Source project. Take your time, do it right, create your art. We can wait. You would certainly gain a hell of a lot more respect from the folks who use your software.

I have a couple of Open Source projects that I support monetarily and each one has stated that they will never use AI in their project. If the project's stance changes, then my support will change.

I know that many developers won't give a shit about what I or anyone else says, and that's sad. After 30+ years of using Linux, I'm moving on. How many others are out there that feel the same way that I do? This is not the Linux and Open Source world that I want or the world that I have enjoyed daily for the past 30 years.

I've been on my soapbox for a few days now about how disappointed I've become. I've been on my soapbox because this is something that I care deeply about.

You finding it helpful doesn't make the environmental impacts disappear, or make money appear in the pockets of all the people whose IP is being stolen, or even ensure that it's not teaching you to write bad code.

Every AI user finds a way to justify it to themself, but there's nothing responsible about your use case. You're the baddie, here - step away from the edge.

I have been using #Debian since around 2004.

That is 22 years, for those keeping count.

I cannot express how disappointed I am that Debian is going to allow for #AISlop to be used in commits. For 22 years I have been a fairly vocal advocate for people to use Debian.

Over the next couple of months I will be transitioning all of my Debian systems to #Gentoo or other Non-Slopified distros.

If a few of the DMs I've received after posting my thoughts on AI are any indication, I've made a few people rather angry at me. And I'm not sorry. There is nothing good about current AI. AI could have been created ethically, but instead, the rich folks behind it decided money was more important so they decided to steal to build their models. And the people who continue to use AI even when they know the ethical issues behind it don't care about the ethical issues behind it. In one of the DMs that I received, I was told that they use AI from Google ethically. That is just not possible. Someone explain to me how this is possible.

It amazes me and, if I'm being honest, frustrates me and angers the hell out of me, at how many people are okay with using AI. I mean, they just don't give a shit about any of the ethical issues with its use because it "makes their work easier" or they're "afraid of being left behind". If you use AI, you're telling me that you are okay with art being stolen, personally created content being stolen, energy prices surging for so many folks who are already struggling, clean water sources being used up, contributing to climate change (see the latest news in Nepal), making the rich even richer while we all struggle, and I could go on, and on, and on.

This is really stressing me out so fuck all of it.

Well, fuck. After more than 30 years of using Linux, it seems the days of me running Linux are numbered and I will be moving to a different option. An option that I started working on a few months back.

As a user of Debian for many, many years, I am seriously disappointed with this decision. I had higher hopes that Debian, out of all of the Linux projects out there, would be more responsible and understand the negative ethical issues of using AI. It seems I was wrong.
