It's been roughly a year since I switched three production servers to btrfs from zfs. No issues at all, less ram consumption, slightly quicker performance on backups, and no dkms rebuilding shyze when major upgrades come out. Pretty awesome. #btrfs #sysadmin #Linux #Debian #zfs

Fun fact.
Btrfs c'est bien, ça te fais gagner de la place (et pas qu'un peu)(et les Snapshot, mais pas encore testé).

Mais grub et os-prober, il aime pas.
C'est un comble quand même, ça fais des années que le format existe, et Grub ne sait même pas aller chercher dans des sous-volumes les kernel, initramfs et tout le toutim...

Faut faire à la mano, configurer une nouvelle entrée dans /etc/grub.d, pour qu'il veuille bien rajouter ton nouvel OS dans son menu...

J'ai mis une plombe à dépatouiller le truc.

(Appartement, Arch a os-prober-btrfs, mais pas Debian...)

UPDATE: Sorry, wrongly blamed @borgbackup - the backup included a #btrfs #snapper snapshots directory (which itself included the borg repo *several times* 😅). Although the inodes are equal, so borg could check that...

As far as #btrfs goes, I dunno, I just feel like it's hesitant at times, even when doing really basic things like just writing a tiny little text file.

And I'm not even using any fancy features like deduplication (snapper has made some snapshots, though).

Well, this is a new one for me - I'm not very familiar with #btrfs; but I wouldn't have expected running out of disk space to be unrecoverable - especially in single-user mode without booting alternative media. rm just hangs.

I've worked with a dozen #UNIX flavors over the last 32 years. This is special.

Butterbian

Butterbian is a Debian 13 (Trixie) installer built around one idea: your system should be snapshotted before anything breaks it. Most distros leave BTRFS and Timeshift as an exercise for the user. Butterbian does it for you — subvolumes laid out correctly, Timeshift configured, grub-btrfs wired in, so you can roll back from GRUB if it all goes sideways.

Been playing with Solus Linux recently. I like that things like installing Blender also pulls in AMD rocm clr and friends and gets Cycles support working without any real futzing around.

The Solus installer doesn't give a lot of filesystem options, err, perhaps more fairly, options that I like. No zfs and simple btrfs. I converted the root disk into a btrfs raid1 mirror after the fact but it would be cool if that was possible in the installer. Maybe I missed it. I can live with btrfs, I guess. Ha.

Running the Plasma spin (for now?). Will take a hard look at Qt based Budgie 11 when it comes out.

Very nice, polished distro. Thinking about putting it on my main box since I've got btrfs retroactive mirroring figured out. First time using (i.e. trusting) btrfs so maybe I should let some more water go under Solus' keel before going 'all in'.

Too bad Alpine doesn't have the same level of rocm support. I get it. It is what it is.

for #selfhosting, it will be enough,i'm confident that my service can endure a powercut, so snapshot will be fine.

i haven't figured out how i will manage off-site backup, maybe export a tar from borg ? or rsync the repo even if it's not advised.
