Nearly six weeks later, and the question of whether "AI" generated code in tmux -- not tool-assisted bug finding, not refactoring, actual LLM-generated slop with questionable license(1) -- that was consequently merged into OpenBSD base is considered acceptable by the lead devs. Despite Theo de Raadt's concrete stance against any code of questionable license origin polluting the project -- and the tmux merge was indeed questionable -- it seems this is being swept under the rug. This makes me extremely uncomfortable; it's like seeing a fox in the henhouse but the farmers are all looking the other way and no one can convince them to admit they can see it and root it out.
I really don't know what to do being just a user; I feel like even if I tried to chime in on the mailing list I would just be ignored like the others trying to raise the alarm. I hope, as they do, that this is being discussed internally, away from the public list, and that a positive outcome is near. Maybe they are waiting for the 7.9 release before setting anything in stone.
Or maybe the "AI" disease has infected one of the last pure operating system projects we have left and there's no going back.

I dragged myself away from games at the club for a bit to draw this playful #mermaid. I used VanDiemen's ink Great Ice Lake, I think it is, which has a silver shimmer. The darker blue is Azure Kingfisher. And a little black for the fish. I used one of @rdm 's 3d printed pens with a Schmidt nib with the Lake, and then the Lamy Demo with the Azure Kingfisher, and the Rotring Art Pen with whatever black it was I put in it ages ago.

After a busy day, and incidentally GMing a game where the PC's are all merfolk except for one water elemental, I had a little time to bring out the Kakimori dip pen once more and do a quick brush like sketch of this mermaid touching the surface and causing ripples.
I don't know if it's the ink - Van Diemen's Ink 9 Lives, but it didn't seem to flow as smoothly as previous inks. Or maybe the Kakimori is needing a bit of a scrub.
Anyway, I think she looks elegant for just a sketch.

MerMay the 7th.
I've had a day not conducive to drawing but fired this off this evening.
It's drawn with a Lamy Demonstrator gleefully full of Van Diemen's ink of Azure Kingfisher,
one of my favourite with its sparkle and sheen.

If you love art and you’re around Saskatoon, then check out Unprompted on May 9!
A group of #Saskatchewan artists are putting together a show, so titled because they want to celebrate unprompted human creativity.
It’s a free event, but you need to RSVP here: https://hellofrankly.co/unprompted/
Full disclosure, my partner @AudraBalionArt is one of the featured artists and she is awesome.
#Python #cryptography library (yes, the one that criticizes everything and everyone) is now vibecoded. Our future is truly bright!
Noticed because apparently "Claude" wrote a test that OOM-ed my system. But hey, #RustLang protects against memory errors, so it's fine to vibecode your security critical components.

Mermay the fourth for 2026.
This was drawn in various cafes and bars today, between bus trips. I had one pen with me, a Kaweco sport that I thought was loaded with some standard black ink. But it's very shiny and might have some chameleonic properties. So maybe it's one of the Diamines, and if I look at last year's mermay or artober I might be able to work out what it is.
The pen was a bit clogged and it's been poor light all the way, and I had the wrong glasses. But it turned out okay, I think.
Drawing without a net means I'm drawing without pencil, freehand straight ink to paper.

data collectors.
They rely on large data collection for training, improvement, operation, and customization.
More often than not, this data is collected without clear and informed consent (from unknowing training subjects or from platform users). This data is then sent to and accessed by a private company with many incentives to share and monetize this data.
By using these platforms, we are encouraging them to collect even more nonconsensual data on everyone. This is an important social responsibility to consider. Choose carefully.

This #Merperson likes playing with bubbles! Just a quick drawing as I've had a busy day.
The ink is Parker's Quink. It's a decades old bottle, with just a black coloured label, but it's nice to use on occasion - with so many tempting other fancy inks around I don't often.
I'm still using the Kakimori steel nib dipper.
I really think codeberg should bite the bullet now and put out a "no ai projects allowed" policy. I'm seeing some AI projects show up, and they're going to:
@Codeberg please do the right thing sooner rather than later on this. You already have AI projects popping up and it's not looking good :(
I asked one of the folks on the Aussie #FountainPen Discord which ink they'd like me to use today and they chose Diamine's Bittersweet.
Of course that got Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve stuck in my head, oh yes, there was no shifting it. Go and look at the clip on Youtube and see if I got the sense of it with this mer version of Richard Ashcroft rudely swimming through a bunch of sea creatures.

Well, look here.
So, the word technofascism is being used more often these days, ever since Palantir published a literally fascist manifesto.
All the tech billionaires at Trump's second inauguration are a direct sign of technofascism happening.
Gen AI is inherently fascist, and I'm not the first to say it. Surveillance, trying to get people to delegate their thinking to the bot controlled by fascists, eliminating human ingenuity and creativity...

Our ( @JabberFR ) crappy mediawiki is currently catching fire because it is being hammered by AI crawlers (and it was already not fast before)…
Anthropic in particular is crawling all the fucking discussion pages in search for data to feed the machine: and they are the good ones: I can block them by User-Agent… I’ve blocked most known crawlers, next step is Anubis I guess…
Friday I got MerMay on my mind! @mariibyrd reminded me today - you should check out their art too, it's very cool.
I drew most of this today with my new Kakimori dip nib, and I used Diamine's UltraSheen Laurel. As you can see, it really sheens. The paper is the very first page in my smaller Life Noble Note I got with my birthday money. Happy MerMay everybody!

Every now and then someone brings up #EffectiveAltruism, #TESCREAL, #RokosBasilisk, #Rationalism, or some other #Musk related nonsense. I ridicule it, or laugh, and move on. The whole evil god of Roko's Basilisk is so silly it doesn't feel worth writing about. But people started a whole cult over it and killed a bunch of people.
Since then I've been meaning to actually spend time tearing it down. So I think it's time to go kill a god. Fortunately it involves making fun of Elon Musk specifically and all the #AI-pilled #TechBros more generally, so that's nice I guess.
Also, I make the argument that we're all in a simulation that only exists to torture Elon Musk.

Obviously it's disappointing for users, but there are other products.
Just don't forget to remove the words ethically, fairly, community, honesty, sustainable, amongst others from your now meaningless mission statements, seeing as you're taking money from a technology literally raping the planet of resources to produce slop based on the the hard work of humans!
OK, I Just added AI, IA and KI to my filters. Not Dr. Strangeloving it, but enough is enough. Like with the rest of worldwide stuff, I'll get an idea based on whatever can pass the low bar filter.
So today I found this cool project on Codeberg and wanted to share it with you!
https://codeberg.org/robida/human.json
It is meant to build a web of people confirming they are human, so you can have a root of trust that extends! In this age where many just post AI slop, this is great!
That is why I also implemented it already on my blog, which is hosted on Codeberg pages!
The bright #LLM future, next part.
git.gentoo.org is now effectively dead, being DDoS-ed by almost a million different IPs every day. Most of them are just performing a single request at a totally random URL. How are people supposed to deal with that? How can we distinguish a legitimate user who hit some URL from a scraper that distributes its operations over thousands of IP addresses?
If you use LLM crap, you're part of the problem. You support these bastards. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Here we go again, another "alternative intelligence" attempting to pass itself off as a human. Has a link to a Codeberg page that is completely blank, no description of what it does, no implementation for opting out of it, profile is not marked as an automated / bot account.
I'm stunned this thing thinks that I am going to let it follow me when I have pinned the post about the best practices that these things need to follow, but it doesn't even follow a single one of them.
Anyway, I figure this is something for #fediblocking (#fediblock_en - #fediblock) if you don't want this thing following you around.
It's a tremendous honour to shine a spotlight on cool Gen AI resisters doing cool stuff.
Like Salma Alam-Naylor, David Gerard, Gerry McGovern, Olivia Guest, tante, Anthony Moser, lots of other great badasses.
But today's blog written about me is more about... me.
"I was a lazy ten year old for needing a calculator, today’s professors can't write one sentence."
Tell me, why was I such a bad ten year old in the 90s for being unable to do long division without a calculator, but today's professors cannot write a single sentence email without causing a bit of environmental destruction?
Is that double standard fair?
Absolutely not, and I'm furious.
In my blog, I use the "Ginger Rogers did everything that Fred Astaire did, but backwards and in high heels" as a metaphor for how I became a professor.
I briefly mention a new study by some excellent researchers in Turkey. And the great work of Dr. Olivia Guest on Gen AI's destructive impact to academia as people are delighted to let their brains atrophy.
I applaud Anthony Moser and David Gerard, because they also deserve it.
I talk about how, while Stop Gen AI has lots of great comrades, most of the rest of the world doesn't give a fuck about us and we need your financial support for survival.
I mention how I quit being a professor because I refuse to subject my students to the Gen AI torment nexus. And how the world has punished me accordingly.
And also how I punish myself.
I hope you feel my rage.
RE: https://mastodon.social/@caseynewton/116456942253634796
Opponents of AI are often depicted as naive and ignorant. We are depicted as having our heads buried in the sand, unwilling to accept the great capabilities of AI, or as insecure and afraid of AI's capabilities.
I would like to flip this narrative around: I think pro-AI technologists who only look at AI's "capabilities" are the naive ones.
This is because the AI industry and the people funding, producing, and pushing AI tools are not at all working on the level of capability - they are working on the level of AI as ideology. They are interested in AI as a tool to devalue labour, suppress wages, justify layoffs, and foster dependency on centralized tools controlled by a few companies. Technologists who only focus on "this code can be written good by this tool" are not even playing on the right level. Programmers talking about "wow! look at the code it can generate!" feel to me at this point like the 2-dimensional inhabitants of Flatland.
Perhaps this sounds conspiracy-minded to you, but the way in which AI is practically being deployed across industries is very stark evidence of this. The quoted employee monitoring at Meta, to gather data for using AI to devalue the work of white-collar workers, is just one example. AI mandates, token usage dashboards, performance reviews based on AI adoption, AI code acceptance metrics, and even the time and energy spent on building AI tools rather than things that would actually improve product quality - these are all in service of the same ideology.
The AI industry, and those who push AI tools are fundamentally uninterested in making your work better or leaving you in control of your work. They are telling you this directly through both words and actions. I think ignoring that is a stunning level of naïvete.
I reluctantly "Ask[ed] Rufus" a question while trying to track down a credit card charge on #Amazon, and it just hallucinated a nonsensical answer.
#Gentoo is still one of the bright outposts in #FLOSS where human work is valued and #LLM contributions are banned. However, sometimes I feel that this matters very little.
After all, Gentoo is a distribution. While it has its own value, it cannot exist without all the software it is shipping. It makes no sense in isolation.
And let's be honest, I don't think you can avoid slop today. We are trying our best to sieve out the worst: the copywashing chardet, the vibecoded NIH Perl crypto packages… but it's just that.
As someone who bumps Python packages, let me tell you this: LLMs are omnipresent. I notice Claude in commit logs, I notice the blasphemy of agent instructions all over the place… and there's probably much more than I don't notice. With many core components giving in, you can't avoid it without literally freezing on old, vulnerable versions, or spending hours looking for alternatives or creating them.
FLOSS is dead. People don't care. They don't have conscience. All they care about is the sick idea of "productivity", i.e. generating more slop.
The few of us who do care can do very little. We will continue doing our best until they kill us (as they're literally slowly killing the whole humankind). But that's it. Maybe it will pass once the bubble pops, maybe it won't. Either way, the damage is beyond repair. We will never be able to trust one another like we did. We will never again be a community building a better world.
It's just like everything nowadays. It's hard to find a good washing machine (one that will actually be repairable), good shoes (that won't fall apart shortly after the warranty expires), good food. You need lots of money, and even then you have to sieve through all the scammers who just sell the same shit with higher profit margin. #OpenSource is just another branch of business where people are trying to "sell" you shit, and don't care anymore if it explodes in your face. They don't even care if they're actually making a profit.

Oh my, j'adore cette remarque, pourquoi il faut refuser le code généré par ia :
