So in a nutshell, GDPR not applicable and in theory, no additional risk. Issues around & remain wide open.

If you haven't been paying attention the happenings in AI, you may have missed that the attention has shifted away from the generative models (such as LLMs, and diffusion models, etc) to — Agents.

At first, a single Agent. And now, groups of Agents working together.

Interestingly, ActivityPub has a place for Agents. In fact, 2 places:

In contrast, current AI systems are fundamentally short-sighted collaborators - optimized for providing instant and complete responses, without ever saying no (unless for safety reasons). What are the consequences of this dynamic? Here, through a series of randomized controlled trials on human-AI interactions (N = 1,222), we provide causal evidence for two key consequences of AI assistance: reduced persistence and impairment of unassisted performance. Across a variety of tasks, including mathematical reasoning and reading comprehension, we find that although AI assistance improves performance in the short-term, people perform significantly worse without AI and are more likely to give up. Notably, these effects emerge after only brief interactions with AI (approximately 10 minutes). These findings are particularly concerning because persistence is foundational to skill acquisition and is one of the strongest predictors of long-term learning. We posit that persistence is reduced because AI conditions people to expect immediate answers, thereby denying them the experience of working through challenges on their own. These results suggest the need for AI model development to prioritize scaffolding long-term competence alongside immediate task completion.

Some projects, like Jazzband, have been forced to sunset altogether. Jannis Leidel, the lead maintainer and Python Software Foundation chairperson, writes that the “flood of AI-generated spam PRs and issues” made his project unsustainable.

According to Kate Holterhoff, Ph.D., a senior analyst at the consultancy Red Monk, the barrier to entry is now extremely low, making it easier to game the traditional incentive model for participating in open source. As she tells The New Stack, “It’s putting the contract between maintainers and contributors in peril in ways that haven’t existed before.”

For example, Rémi Verschelde, who oversees the open source Godot game engine, shares on BlueSky that dealing with AI slop is “draining and demoralizing.” Other project maintainers report growing apathy and wasted time responding to the deluge.

To be fair, nearly all software developers now use AI, and many communities rely on it to produce legitimate fixes and contributions. But the volume of low-quality submissions is becoming unsustainable, especially given that 60% of maintainers are unpaid volunteers."

Dubbed “Project SAFE HAVEN,” the product is advertised by defense vendor Edge Ops LLC as a “question-based AI interface” that uses “persistent passive data collection” to map “patterns of life,” a surveillance tactic that ICE says will identify the “habitual locations, routes, and behavioral patterns” of its targets.

Additional features of the technology described in procurement documents include real-time location tracking and analysis that will categorize individuals and groups as affiliated with ostensible criminal organizations, such as gangs or cartels. That includes building “target profiles” that track individuals’ activity by linking data obtained from Wi-Fi network connections and mobile smart devices, such as cell phones and smartwatches.

Researchers from OpenAI have put forward an industrial policy for artificial intelligence and it’s quite a read. They propose a legally recognised “Right to AI,” meaning broad public access to powerful systems, backed by government-funded compute resources so that researchers, startups, and public institutions can run models themselves, rather than rely on a few companies.

To make this reality, they want to see an expansion of electricity supply for data centres by fast-tracking nuclear and renewables. They also suggest a national wealth fund that captures a share of AI-driven profits and redistributes it to citizens, alongside taxes or levies on highly automated systems, effectively a “robot tax”.

Of course none of that has any chance of happening, but OpenAI can now claim they care about the common man.
