- Dell OptiPlex mini i5 8GB £80
- external 4T sata/USB drive that's been sitting unused for a few years. I have another that I use for rotating rsync backup along with a couple of bare SSDs, so might deploy that at some point. New storage/RAM is too expensive atm

I think I'm going to have to open up some old kit and scavenge for RAM at some point, but this will do for a start.

I migrated the container with #Wanderer to a more powerful #Proxmox node, increasing the number of CPUs and the amount of RAM. Now I can build trails using my own computing powers!

#Wanderer also uses #OVERPASS and #Nominatim, and it looks like I can host them as well.

I am very proud that we as #credativ will be part of FrOSCon this year as a stand partner. Recently I got asked about my @BoxyBSD@bsd.cafe project, which offers free VPS instances of vary #BSD based systems for learning and educational purposes and I'm happy to share that this projects remains available. Several things could finally be clarified to continue this service to make sure people can learn and practice on real #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD systems to #RUNBSD. Also, BoxyBSD starts moving over to #Sylve on #bhyve.

But not only that! We could also get some more new resources and locations to scale and this also brings up another new project for #free Linux #VPS instances at https://boxedtux.com (Fedi: @BoxedTux@mastodon.social) where people will be able to learn and practice on different #Linux based distributions (e.g., #Debian, #Ubuntu, #Rocky,...). One of my projects this week is to bring up a K8S cluster on our Proxmox homelab to perhaps eventually migrate EphemeraSearch on it.

EphemeraSearch currently runs on a 7-node K8S cluster at Hetzner.

I'm going to drop some notes in this thread, to perhaps consolidate them into a blog post or something later 🤓

Also, I want the K8S cluster to support IPV6, which meant replacing Talos' default CNI (Flannel) with Cilium.

(OK, it might be possible to support IPv6 with Flannel on Talos, but the Talos docs say very little about how to customize Flannel, and I wanted Cilium for other reasons too - e.g. LoadBalancer support with L2 announcements, replacing kube-proxy...)

This means declaring "cni: none" in the Talos machine config, and then either:

1) manually installing Cilium after provisioning the cluster

2) finding a way to automatically install Cilium when the cluster is provisioned.

Of course I went for option 2, right :-)

Which leads us to a rabbit hole of multiple options:

1) wait for the cluster to be up (=K8S API is functional) and then use the Helm provider to create a helm_release resource on the cluster

Problem: there is no easy and clean way to wait for the cluster to be up.

Talos has a talos_cluster_health resource, but this one waits for all nodes to be "Ready", which isn't going to happen since the CNI hasn't been deployed yet. (There is a skip_kubernetes_checks option but it doesn't seem to help.)

Declaring something like a kubernetes_nodes resource in Tofu sort of works, ... until you reprovision the cluster. Then you realize that you can't even do a "tofu plan" because Tofu tries to refresh that resources' status, which requires the cluster to be up. So, this is a non-starter.

2) use Talos "inlineManifests" feature, which instructs talos to apply a bunch of YAML to the cluster when it's provisioned

Problem: this requires Cilium YAML manifests; and the way I install it is typically with the Helm chart.

Solution: use a helm_template data source to do the equivalent of the "helm template" command, and render the Cilium chart into ready-to-apply YAML manifests.

Next problem: the Cilium Helm chart is very sophisticated, and depends on Capabilities.KubeVersion - in other words, when we invoke the helm_template resource, we need to pass it the correct kube_version.

Next solution: that version is available in talos_machine_configuration resources.

And with that (and a good amount of Cilium configuration!) our cluster comes up fully functional!

Of course, I can't be trusted to take notes properly, so I haven't properly documented progress on this thread 😅

But here is what happened since last time...

I moved all that to a module that I intend to publish. This led me into investigating how to set default computed values for the module inputs. For instance, I want to be able to specify IPV4 and IPV6 subnets, but if no subnet is specified, I want to pick a random one.

I also added a bunch of documentation.

And then I tested everything using a Proxmox token instead of SSH access, and ... of course it broke, because I was importing a disk image (downloading a raw disk image from the Talos image factory) and that requires SSH access. Because the Proxmox API is annoying like that.

(I didn't think that'd be an issue because that particular feature wasn't listed in the bpg provider under "stuff that requires SSH access".)

So I'm now refactoring everything to install from an ISO image instead (since that doesn't require SSH access), but of course, yak shaving happened: when installing from a Talos image, when the VM reboots, instead of using the static IP address passed by Proxmox in the "nocloud" payload, it's now obtaining an address from DHCP. Which means that cluster bootstrap doesn't work anymore.

I'm now pondering options:

- switching back to raw disk provisioning (and requiring SSH access for my module to work)

- passing IP addresses in the Talos MachineConfig (that should definitely work, right?)

- finding out if there is a way to tell Talos to use the nocloud payload even when rebooting (actually kexec-ing) the disk install

Well, it's the end of an era: my 3 Lenovo M720q are now a full Talos Linux cluster, Proxmox is gone, and the Framework Desktop has been repurposed as a dedicated game station running Bazzite.

Most likely I will migrate from my old Razer laptop to the Framework Desktop, and make it my only workstation, but not today.

Da ich für kleinere Firmen arbeite, bewege ich mich sehr bewußt im Bereich #opensource. Zusammen mit europäischen Produkten entstehen Netzwerke, Serveranlagen und Arbeitsumgebungen die unsere Kunden befähigen effizient zu arbeiten.

Netzwerke installiere ich mit #MikroTik Geräten. Als Firewall, Struktur-, Stockwerk-Switch oder WLAN-Accesspoint, jedes Gerät hat die selbe Bedienoberfläche, ist in den System-Funktionen erweiterbar, oder durch Schnittstellen extern ansprechbar. So sichere ich automatisiert Konfigurationen, oder führe Updates aus.

Server, ob lokal in der eigenen Unternehmung, oder auch in entfernten Rechenzentren, sollen so optimal wie möglich genutzt werden – dazu dienen Plattformen wie #Proxmox. Man kann so nicht nur mehrere Server auf der selben Hardware betreiben, sondern nutzt die Fähigkeiten der Plattform für zusätzliche Sicherheit, ohne sofort ein größeres Investment tätigen zu müssen.

Ein wichtiger Punkt, #opensource. Community Versionen bieten die Möglichkeit, Plattformen intensiv auf Funktionalität zu überprüfen. Wenn die Lösung zur Unternehmung passt, kann diese in das Produktivsystem übernommen, oder durch einen Lizenzkauf in eine Enterprise Version überführt werden – all das sind legitime Lösungsansätze. Ich sehe mich als Partner meiner Kunden. Egal ob es um Diskussionen geht, oder Projekte geplant und umgesetzt werden sollen.

C’est la preuve qu’une alternative libre et légère aux géants propriétaires a toujours toute sa place aujourd'hui.

Des performances impressionnantes sur #Proxmox

Côté technique, les captures de l'instance #LXC (ID 140) sont éloquentes. Mumble reste le roi de l'optimisation :
CPU : À peine 1.85% d'utilisation pour 2 cœurs, même avec presque 20 personnes qui discutent.
Mémoire : Une empreinte minuscule de 37 Mo sur les 512 Mo alloués.

Okay, I just ran into a similar issue which re-prioritized it higher for me to implement... But hey, here it is! You can now also use ACME with any other ACME compatible CAs rather than just Let's Encrypt. In this example, you can see it with my own Certificate Authority (CA) "gyptazy open-source solutions", which is operated by StepCA.

I'm really happy to see how PegaProx becomes better and better every day... Over Easter, several new cool features took place!

Custom ACME Integration in PegaProx with gyptazy open-source solutions CA example

For real, many people asked me for their smaller and mid-sized environments, how to handle remote syslog of their nodes. I had some ideas (some of you may have already found my Rust interpretation of this) but I think having this included in #PegaProx as a centralized management interface makes more sense.

So, PegaProx comes with an own syslog server (ipv4/ipv6, udp/tcp, encrypted/unencrypted support) and is wired to the interface within the resources tab. Providing a quick overview of all your logs and filter options. The next thing is wiring it to the notification system of PegaProx, allowing automated alerting. Might be nice to quickly identify when the quorum got lost - all built-in into PegaProx!

The feedback was honestly amazing. Many were impressed by how PegaProx brings essential enterprise grade features to Proxmox clusters that are still missing today. We can clearly see the gaps that were fixed by #ProxLB, #ProxSnap, #ProxCLMC, #ProxPatch and many other ones! Keep in mind, PegaProx is free and fully #opensource!

I wrote up my entire backup strategy for my servers across FreeBSD and Linux:

- ZFS snapshots with sanoid
- Off-site replication via syncoid to rsync.net (encrypted at rest)
- Proxmox Backup Server fronting Backblaze B2 for VMs
- A Podman trick for backing up RHEL hosts without native packages
- Dead man's switch monitoring
- Quarterly restore tests recorded with asciinema

Mes 6 nœuds pvenocl affichent fièrement presque 7 semaines d'uptime !

C’est la preuve que l'infra est super solide, même si on dépasse un peu ma règle d'or du reboot mensuel pour les mises à jour. Il est peut-être temps de leur offrir un petit redémarrage bien mérité pour repartir sur de bonnes bases, non ?

Bon, j'ai débusqué un petit bug sur #ProxCenter ce matin !

Le truc un peu relou ! Il essaie de sauvegarder de la RAM (vmstate) sur un container LXC... sauf que les containers, bah ils n'ont pas de RAM à sauvegarder comme ça. Du coup, #Proxmox fait la tête et envoie une erreur 400.
Résultat, aucun snapshot ne s'affiche et on ne peut plus en créer.

Petit ticket ouvert au propre avec les captures qui vont bien pour aider le dev à corriger ça.

Recently, I added #ProxSnap to #PegaProx which allows you to quickly find snapshots of your VMs and Containers. You can also filter them by date to quickly identify older or even outdated ones and clean them up at a central point!

J'arrive pas à booter sur KVM une VM récupérée d'une sauvegarde Proxmox, qu'est-ce que je fais mal ?
La sauvegarde était en vma, elle a été convertie en raw, je l'ai convertie en qcow2, je fais l'importation comme le tutoriel le dit mais j'obtiens soit "no bootable disk" (en BIOS) ou juste un shell UEFI (en UEFI).

Problème :
J'ai un nvme sur lequel est installé Proxmox. La machine n'est plus accessible via SSH et j'ai bidouillé un truc (GPU passthrough), donc plus accessible avec un écran. J'ai besoin de changer un fichier dans /etc pour corriger un pbs réseau (et retrouvé le système ^^). Je boot sur une live USB pour accéder au stockage.
Sauf que je n'arrive pas à monter la partition concernée. Qqn saurait comment faire ?

Edit : trouvé.
La commande "fdisk --list" me donnait toutes les partitions. Je m'étais arrêté à l'occurence avec le modèle du nvme (sous /dev/nvme0n1). En regardant plus bas, j'ai une référence à pve-root sous /dev/mapper. C'était ça ^^
