Weirdly frustrating day today. We booked a weekend maintenance window at work, to upgrade our #Proxmox cluster from V8 to V9 (as V8 goes eol in a few weeks).

The upgrade itself seemed to go smoothly, the first node in the cluster came back fine, but then the second... didn't. Cue 90 mins of troubleshooting (although that included 20 mins for my colleague to head into the office to plug a rescue disk in, because the supermicro LOM refused to mount it remotely 😡) only to discover that the broken node (and the node still pending an upgrade) didn't have the ESP partition in fstab, so /boot/efi was blank.

This meant things went horribly wrong when grub-efi-amd64 got updated and attempted to update the boot order, and couldn't. Which apt doesn't seem to treat as an error worthy of an error return code.

The annoying thing is, I can't work out how it broke *now*. Either this should have broken earlier, during other updates (as that efi package did get updated through the life of proxmox 8), or it should have kept working through this update. One to solve on Monday I feel.

I took some time today to create a PVE test cluster on my outdated hardware in NYC and it's interesting, uninteresting, or better said just plain boring. And this is good!

It just works and (mostly) behaves just like you know and would assume. Everything is mostly the same (sure, some things on hw level might be a bit different when playing near hardware) and you want to make sure your hardware supports H flag.

Adapting to #aarch64 might be a good choice, even professional systems became cheaper. Keeping all automation, config and tools might make it even easier. For me it's now about integrating further arm64 support into #PegaProx and creating arm64 based artifacts!

When talking about open-source virtualization platforms, Proxmox VE is probably one of the first solutions that comes to mind. It combines KVM virtual machines, LXC containers, storage, networking and clustering behind a convenient management interface.
But what if you want to build the same kind of environment on FreeBSD?
This is exactly where Sylve becomes interesting.

As people kept asking for the modules I developed for my @BoxyBSD@bsd.cafe project, I just made them shiny and prepared them for pushing them upstream.

Making the switch easier for people coming from #Proxmox, it uses mostly the same syntax as the Proxmox modules to keep the interface similar. Next to this, they're built in an equal way with a shared authentication module util, to make sure new modules can directly use the same authentication lib.

Neu gibt es eine experimentelle PBS HTTP Control Plane. Snapshot- und Archivlisten, Zugangsdaten prüfen sowie Prune Dry-Runs können optional direkt über die Proxmox Backup Server Management API laufen. Bei Problemen wird automatisch auf den proxmox-backup-client zurückgefallen.

my server had been down for like 5 days now. Now im stuck on this stupid place and don't even have acces to my nas. Then I found out I spend the last day and a half copying the wrong drive with ddrescue. Im soo done with this shit. I have decade old hard drives but ask a ssd to do more then 3 years hell no. I want a server that could run forever if electricity is provided. Ssds make it impossible. 3 months of 15 vms that probably didn't even do 500gb per day in total killed a drive that supposed to have a rw capacity of 2400 tb. Also I hate bluesky with its stupid twitter like post limit of 500. My mastodon had a limit of 65536. You could write a small book with that. And now that I have to copy shit with ddrescue again but instead of getting the same or better performance since its a ssd copying to a USB harddrive compared to a USB harddrive to the same USB harddrive its 30 times slower at peak. And that USB harddrive is 1tb bigger. now some might say just use the last backup. Well to even acces ir i need a vm on that ssd because nobody plans that ssd especially one from a reputable brand like samsung dies after 4 months of use. Even if mine was rather extreme compared to the usual use of one of them. it's ridiculousthat only 50 bad sectors and a passed smart test causes all the data to be inaccessible. Also the expectationthat I have backups that can survivea nuke is unrealistic. If i had the money i wouldn't use decade old hardware. Now you might say just play video games on your gaming pc. Well i don't have one, all my desktops are on my server and the only other computer that could game properly is copying the drive. I pirated gamesI alreadyown on a laptop for just to play some shitty DM for a dozen mins. This thread is probablybecoming longer then any serious post I made on the fediverse. Anyways now that i dont have a ssd for vms ig i gotta use a dozen decade old hard drives from the discard pile of a graphics design studio since im broke and you cant run multiple windows on a single harddrive cause that shit fucking lagggs. Im so done with this shit, i can even torture myself by editing long overdue videos and ive watched so many video essays that I can't watch anymore. I might just start looking on ebay for like epyc Rome shit or something. HAHA I GOT IT TO COPY AT 135MB/s. So now it's done at 0000... great. STILL BETTER THEN 10 DAYS HAHHAHAHAHAHAHHS OR THE PREVIOUS DAY AND THEN SOME ONTOP JAHAHHAHAHSHSHDHDHHDJDJFHDJDJDJDHHFJDJDJDHDJJFHDHDHFHNFJFNJDJFKFJFJDJDHFH it wasn't done, ddrescuetime calc sucks ass like it's not gonna be like 12 hours instead of 8... all the copying was fine no errors ddrescue didn't see any faulty sectors and yet all my data is shot. I can't boot truenas nor can I extract the config of it.

Backups gehören zu den Themen, über die man sich meist erst Gedanken macht, wenn etwas schiefgelaufen ist. Eine versehentlich gelöschte Datei, ein defekter Datenträger oder ein nicht mehr startendes System reichen oft aus, um die eigene Backup-Strategie kritisch zu hinterfragen.

Ich musste gerade einen Rechner für die Arbeit besorgen. Dabei habe ich mich mal wieder mir Prozessoren beschäftigt. Dabei gibt es ja riesige Preisunterschiede, und Ryzen9 und Ryzen7 sagen ja nicht wirklich aus, was da für ein Prozessor drinnen steckt. Anforderung war geringer Stromverbrauch im Idle (Rechnerlein läuft 24/7), #Proxmox mit genügend Reserven für ein paar #Linux VMs und eventuell eine Win #VM. Geworden ist es jetzt ein 3 Jahre alter Prozessor, weil alles andere war unbezahlbar und hatte wenn dann nur Vorteile in der NPU und so KI Gedöns. Vor zehn Jahren hätte glaube ich niemand einen so alten Prozessor gekauft. Geht da wirklich in der normalen CPU nix mehr vorwärts? Ha! Funny! I can't hold myself. I said I needed to downsize, so I did remove one Raspberry Pi 4, however now I need to add a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W to monitor a UPS in a location that is not reachable by any "regular" computer. So I'm back to the same place I was before, just a different device. 🤪

The reality is that the Proxmox Backup Client has been available for quite some time, allowing dedicated servers and desktop systems to benefit from the same centralized backup infrastructure.

The challenge? The client is powerful, but not necessarily the most user friendly tool for everyone.

ha non pas tout à fait
perso j'ai une LXC nextcloud ( parmi d'autres pour des services aux asso) et une autre Jellyfin (et outils en arr)
comme le NC est plutot l'outils de partage externe , il est sur le reseau pouvant avoir accès au Net et donc https,tls etc
le Jellyifn n'a pas d'ouverture à travers le firewall et je ne chiffre donc pas du tout
donc? tout en local et pas de pb de ce coté.
il n'y a que ffmpeg qui mouline un peu mais le proxmox bien la situation

J'adore personnaliser mon installation #PegaProx, mais le fond d'écran de connexion qui saute à chaque mise à jour, c'était devenu mon petit rituel agaçant.

J'ai décidé de prendre les devants et de proposer une petite amélioration aux développeurs pour que nos logos et images préférés restent en place, même après un docker pull.

Faites gaffe lors de l'upgrade d'un promox (ici 9.1) vers un 9.2, j'ai eu deux machines standalone qui n'ont pas retrouvé leurs disques après le reboot... Par contre, tout est revenu après un poweroff/poweron.

Assurez-vous d'avoir la main sur l'alimentation sur vous tentez la mise à jour...

Just setup #Proxmox Datacenter Manager... I'm not sure if I am missing something. It seems like it's just a dashboard, and doesn't have that much functionality 😅

Also da kannste nichts sagen. Habe 7 Anwendungen von einem #raspberrypi in #Container auf einen #proxmox Server in 1,5 Stunden mit #claudecode umgezogen und konnte nebenher andere Sachen machen. Da waren keine ganz einfachen Sachen dabei. Unter anderem #Grafana / #Prometheus #Datenbank etc.. Das war großes Tennis und eine echte Erleichterung.

The social event on Saturday evening is also always a great opportunity for networking and interesting conversations.

I am very proud that we as #credativ will be part of FrOSCon this year as a stand partner. It is a great chance for us to present our open source-projects (like #ProxLB, #ProxPatch, #ProxSnap, [...] but also all the other ones like #Plutono/#Vali and the credativ-pg-migrator for #PostgreSQL) and meet so many people from the community in person again.

At the moment I am unfortunately still unsure if I can attend personally, because I would also love to prepare a talk about #PegaProx for #Proxmox VE based clusters and share the story behind it, the progress over time, and some of the challenges and experiences along the way.

Could go the #BSD way and use #bhyve stuff? Orrr try something really interesting, #SmartOS which gives you bhyve AND #KVM AND #zones ??? Oh I do love a good set of choices that just paralyzes me sometimes :D

Recently I got asked about my @BoxyBSD@bsd.cafe project, which offers free VPS instances of vary #BSD based systems for learning and educational purposes and I'm happy to share that this projects remains available. Several things could finally be clarified to continue this service to make sure people can learn and practice on real #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD systems to #RUNBSD. Also, BoxyBSD starts moving over to #Sylve on #bhyve.

But not only that! We could also get some more new resources and locations to scale and this also brings up another new project for #free Linux #VPS instances at https://boxedtux.com (Fedi: @BoxedTux@mastodon.social) where people will be able to learn and practice on different #Linux based distributions (e.g., #Debian, #Ubuntu, #Rocky,...). BoxedTux utilizes #Proxmox clusters as a foundation.

Petite surprise du jour : passage au noyau 7.0 pour stopper le « copy fail ». Ça, c’est être sérieux ! On ne prend aucun risque avec les sauvegardes, et c’est bien normal.

🐧 Base solide : Le système passe sur Debian 13.4 (Trixie) avec un Kernel Linux 7.0 et ZFS 2.4.

My new server has arrived! It’s a Lenovo ThinkCentre M90q with a 10th-gen Intel Core i5. It’s got two m.2 2280 slots, 2 RAM slots, a SATA port, and a m.2 Wi-Fi card.

Oh yeah…it also has a PCIe 8x slot that I’ll be stuffing a GPU into for local LLM use.

Need to buy more RAM, but Proxmox is going straight onto this thing tonight!

Here is the backside with all of the ports, including 10GB USB 3.2 Gen 2. Sadly, no 2.5Gb Ethernet. Gonna’ have to use a dongle.

Here it is with the top cover removed. On the left is the 2.5” SATA drive cage. The right is the heatsink and fan assembly. The m.2 slots and RAM are located underneath the unit under a cover.

Here’s a shot of the 8x PCIe slot. With a riser, I can stick a low-profile GPU in here, believe it or not.

@aral Yep. It’ll be interesting to see if it’s as easy as I hear it is. I’ll be migrating…9 containers, I suppose, since I shouldn’t need wud or dockhand anymore. Maybe 8 if I don’t need cockpit? I guess I’ll find out!
