By the way, our first two publications on evaluating #OpenBSD mitigations are out. Both of these papers evaluate some amd64 anti-ROP mitigations: specifically changing the register selection order and semantically equivalent rewriting of instructions that may produce a potential polymorphic gadget instruction. This tracks a paper by mortimer@ back in 2019 at AsiaBSDCon.

The TL;DR is "OpenBSD can shrink binaries a little and gain a little performance without any security loss simply by reverting these mitigations." The mitigations did not hold up to independent evaluation.

The first paper did an exact 1:1 port of these mitigations to FreeBSD and found that register reallocation eliminates only about 0.3% of unique gadgets, for a 0.5% increase in binary size (mortimer@ claimed 6% reduction and "entirely free"). It is useless at best but more likely actively detrimental, as it produces a false sense of security. It also found the instruction rewriting reduces unique gadgets by about 3.5% with a binary size increase of about 1.8% (mortimer@ claimed 5% reduction with 0.15% binary size increase).

We then did a separate implementation of the instruction rewriting mitigation to GCC in the second paper. Our GCC implementation does the older <xchg; op; xchg> dance, as that's what mortimer@'s paper described. This is way worse; producing about a 3% performance hit for no security benefit at all.

The only part of both mitigations worth saving is for basic arithmetic, OpenBSD LLVM now takes advantage of the fact that basic arithmetic has two forms. For example, the newer instruction rewriting mitigation turns

into
{load} addq %rax, %rbx (48 03 d8)

The new instruction rewriting mitigation is genuinely free in terms of binary size and execution speed, but doesn't move the security needle, so this one can stay as it is harmless. Other rewritings still have the flaw of increasing binary size and reducing performance for no security benefit.

After being locked away for 10+ years in the Cloud; it's so refreshing, and frustrating to deal with all of the little things; like filesystems, database replication and locks, replacing fans and NICs, debugging OOMs, and crashing daemons on #FreeBSD, #OmniOS, and #Linux;

I feel like everything moves a little more slowly and sustainably this way; but most of all - I really missed getting lost in the details.

Was having a few annoyances and crashes with XFCE. Could have been that I installed XFCE with pacman and not as a fresh install. Could be the bleeding edge of Artix Linux. Not sure.

Installed Cinnamon with pacman and I'll see if it behaves better.

@nixCraft I started off in the world of Gentoo because I wanted to run a 64 bit OS on my operating system when that wasn't an option using windows. Since then, I've moved off of Gentoo and now I use a variety of Distros like Mint, Ubuntu, Bazzite, etc on my different PCs.

I think the majority of #Linux users probably don't feel that strongly about their distro, but there's a vocal minority out there that make it look like we all do.

Why is #Linux like a religion? Everyone thinks their distro is the one true path, and they’ll die on that hill usually mid `apt upgrade`

Sure is a lot of #Apple nerd angst today. I'm 15 months into my move away from Apple and I'm increasingly happy with that choice. From a user perspective, it seems likely that they'll continue scraping for every last cent users will give them via more ads and a continued transition to services as a primary business model. Meanwhile, as far as their various operating systems, AI slop seems to be their new feature. And, bonus (FOR APPLE) it means users gotta cough up for new devices... Fuck the planet, buy new shit.

Meanwhile, I'm happily using two versions of GNU/Linux (Mint and Trisquel) on a 2018 laptop and 2012 Mac Mini. It's been 15 months and I've had no problems. A beautiful, stable OS with no subscription upsells and no fascist bootlicking capitalist trying to push AI slop that'll require new hardware.

Einfach `sudo ncdu /` starten, durchnavigieren wie im Dateimanager – nur schneller und ohne Maus. Löschen direkt mit `d`.

Zu sehen ist ein Screenshot eines Linux Desktops mit Plasma KDE. Okay today I managed to accidentally trigger “locked” function keys on my rather new M70 RK Royal Kludge. There is a modifier hotkey for this that I didn’t know of before (FN + LEFT CTRL) and I was lost for a hot minute how to turn it off again. Ah well, we’re still getting to know each other.

Anyway, I know from a previous attempt that RKGaming offers a webapp to configure the keyboard (especially it’s macro keys) on https://drive.rkgaming.com/. This works to this date only in Google Chrome (Webserial in Firefox is coming though). Here we can click a button and connect to the wireless receiver and… nothing. Ah yes, we’re on Linux PC and random browsers shall not write to our hardware devices. This is in principle a good idea and I did encounter this before with my Viture XR glasses so I had an idea where to start poking.

First things first: Confirming my theory I checked the browser console and sure enough it was not allowed to open the device:

There is also this special chrome://device-log/ address in Chrome that has some more details:

With this information we do have the Vendor ID (0x3554) the Product ID (0xfa09) and the subsystem (hidraw) in question. This is btw the dmesg output for the connected device, confirming what we know already:

And a quick check on /dev/hidraw10 confirms that we simply to not have permission to read or write to this hidraw device, since it belongs to root.

Now a quick and dirty fix for the current session would be to simply change the ownership of that device but I really want this to stick around after the next reboot so I created the udev rule file /usr/lib/udev/rules.d/72-rk-royal-kludge.rules:

Changes in such files have to be reloaded with e.g. udevadm control --reload. After that… nothing happens. This is because the device exists already so it’s time to unplug that receiver briefly. Now udev kicks in and creates the device files with the new rules applied. There is now a slight difference:

The “+” indicates additional ACL rules. If you did not know about ACLs before: Oh boy, you’re in for a ride. Anyway, I confirmed that I now have access to this by checking the ACLs with e.g. getfacl /dev/hidraw10

And presto. My user beko has read-write access. Another visit to https://drive.rkgaming.com/ yields a far better result:

So I've been using Shotwell as my photo organizer for many years. But it's old, creaky and only barely supported.

What should I use instead? What do you use? I need:

* Photo management (sorting, ranking, deleting)

* Handles 10k+ images fine

* edit with external editor (gimp)

* RAW support

* Runs locally on Linux

* Ideally, import from camera

* Ideally, export to Flickr

* Ideally, a way to export from shotwell/import to the new organizer

So I switched my 2012 macbook air, still very functional but no longer supported by #Apple, to #Linux ElementaryOS 8.1, but there's an issue with battery management- green light on charge cable, but OS showing 6% on battery & not charging. Runs ok on charger, but batt gets really hot. Can’t find an explanation/fix on forums that are in layman terms. Also issues with installing apps through flatpak. 🤷‍♂️

22 Uhr Abends, und mir fällt auf: `tldr` statt `man` ist wie der Unterschied zwischen "ich erkläre dir die ganze Philosophie des Befehls" und "hier sind die 5 Beispiele, die du wirklich brauchst".

`tldr tar` hat mir mehr Lebenszeit gerettet als jeder Energy-Drink. Endlich entpacke ich Archive ohne im Kopf nach der richtigen Buchstabensuppe zu kramen. 🗜️

Installiert via Paketmanager, gibt's für fast alles.

Es wird der Tag kommen, da denkt der #User er installiert "LieblingsProgramm" und in Wirklichkeit installiert er ein #Schadprogramm mit was aus der #Sandbox ausbricht um irgendwas fremdes zu installieren.

Das kann SchürfSoftware sein oder um #BankDaten zu klauen.

Und das alles an der Distro Sicherheit vorbei.

Dann wird auf #Linux gehackt und die GlobalPlayer werden das ausnutzen.

Vor kurzem bin ich auf einen inoffiziellen Qobuz-Player für Linux aufmerksam geworden: QBZ https://qbz.lol

Ein paar Dinge gefallen mir daran:
* Kein Tracking/Telemetrie durch den Client. Bleibt nur noch das, was auf den Servern passiert.
* Verfügbar für mehrere Distros und MacOS
* CoverFlow: für iTunes und iPod Fans ein cooles Gimmick
* Hi-Res Audio wird unterstützt, auch auf externen DAC's
* DLNA/UPnP/Chromecast Support

Als ich Qobuz mal getestet hatte, fande ich den Webplayer als dauerhafte Lösung nicht besonders prickelnd.

Mal sehen, wie Qobuz in der neuen Artikelserie zum Thema Musik auf dem Kuketz-Blog abschneidet.
Vielleicht nehme ich dann mal Geld in die Hand, und verzichte auf Spotify Free.

Mein Lüfterproblem (ständig Vollspeed, dementsprechend laut) habe ich jetzt endlich folgendermaßen in den Griff bekommen:

Informiert euch vorher was Ihr nutzt

🐝 Unter #Linux kann ich alles genau so machen wie unter #Win
Es funktioniert nur anders und vieles ist einfacher
Nur dauert es ein bisschen bis alles eingestellt ist.

Die Bedrohungslage hat sich fundamental verändert. KI-Systeme decken täglich neue, oft kritische Schwachstellen auf – in einem Tempo, mit dem selbst die größten Softwarehersteller kaum Schritt halten können. Zero-Day-Lücken bleiben oft tagelang oder wochenlang ungepatcht. Patchmanagement ist wichtig – aber es reicht längst nicht mehr aus.

Die unbequeme Wahrheit: Es ist keine Frage mehr, ob ein Unternehmen Ziel eines Angriffs wird – sondern wann.
Umso entscheidender ist der Aufbau einer widerstandsfähigen IT-Infrastruktur. Was das konkret bedeutet:

• Netzwerksegmentierung mit moderner Firewall-Technologie – z. B. mit OPNsense: eine Open-Source-Lösung, die enterprise-taugliche Features wie IDS/IPS, VPN und granulares Regelwerk mitbringt – ohne Enterprise-Preisschild.
• Konsequentes Need-to-Know-Prinzip bei Zugriffsrechten
• Moderner Virenscanner mit Prozesserkennung & Verhaltensanalyse
• Backup & Verfügbarkeit durch den Einsatz von Linux/Unix-Systemen mit nativen Snapshot-Funktionen und dem bewährten Dateisystem ZFS – extrem stabil, selbstheilend und ideal für ein mehrstufiges, an die jeweilige Kritikalität angepasstes Backup-Konzept.
• Regelmäßige Schwachstellenscans zur proaktiven Risikoerkennung
• Pentests durch externe Partner, weil ein frischer Blick von außen oft das aufdeckt, was intern übersehen wird

Wichtig dabei: Ein guter Partner muss nicht zwingend aus dem Ökosystem der großen internationalen Anbieter kommen. Im Gegenteil – wer auf Linux/Unix-affine Lösungen setzt (z. B. FreeBSD auf Servern, OPNsense als Firewall, ZFS als Storage-Backbone), reduziert Abhängigkeiten, Lizenzkosten und Angriffsfläche gleichzeitig. Eine pragmatische Mischung bleibt natürlich möglich: Windows auf Clients, offene Systeme im Serverbereich.

Hatte befürchtet, dass beim Umzug zu #Linux der Drucker der Endgegner wird. War aber kein Problem. Endgegner scheint ein guter Musik-Player zu sein, bei dem ich die Musik vom NAS einbinden kann. Vorschläge? Die Netzwerkadresse scheint sich immer zu ändern, wenn ich es mit strawberry versucht habe. Edit: Ich komme von itunes, d.h. es sollte etwas komfortabel sein, mit Cover, Bibliothek erschließen etc.

Und mit G'MIC-Qt habe ich für die meisten von mir genutzten und gekauften Photoshop Filter Ersatz gefunden. D. h. ich werde für neue Versionen folgender Software zukünftig nicht mehr zahlen:

Redfield Quad Pencil

Bedanken können sich die Firmen bei #Microsoft und #Adobe, durch die Strategie der letzten Jahre, sind deren Produkte für mich nicht mehr tragbar.

Als wir vor ein paar Jahren zum Musistreamingdienst deezer wechselten, lag es eigentlich daran, das die App unter Linux damals nicht funktionierte, auch im Browser nicht. (weiß gar nicht wie das heute ist) Zudem gab es damals 6 Accounts für die Family und nicht nur 4 wie bei spotify.

Photoshop Alternative: Lange habe ich Gimp als Ersatz genutzt, stellt sich raus, daß für meine Arbeiten Krita besser geeignet ist, vor allem im Zusammenspiel mit dem Wacom tablet. Außerdem habe ich die Layerstyles (wieder)entdeckt, die mir die Möglichkeit bieten, Ebenen / Auswahl / Text eine Umrandung zu ergänzen 🤩 Nebenschauplatz: Die verfügbaren, stumpfsinnigen KI konnten für diese Funktion Krita nicht als Alternative benennen 🙄

Es geschehen noch Zeichen und Wunder ... Noch vor einigen Jahren war Linux der erklärte Lieblingsfeind von Microsoft (MS). Man hätte gedacht: Eher friert die Hölle zu, als dass MS Linux anfasst. Dann kam, etwas verschämt unterm Ladentisch gehalten, das Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Die Azure Server für Cloud-Computing laufen unter Linux*. Und jetzt das: MS hat mehr als 75 Linux-Kommandos (Werkzeuge für die Kommandozeile/Terminal) zu Windows übertragen. Dort heißen sie Coreutils (Kernwerkzeuge). Was kommt da noch? Kann man sich denn auf gar nichts mehr verlassen?

#hermesagent Experiment auf meinem #macstudio (unfreiwillig aber zurecht) beendet.

Ich wollte den Agenten mit lokalen LLM (qwen3.6-35b-a3b) auf einer Ubuntu-VM aussetzen und mal schauen was passiert.

Dank meinem Mac mit 128GB hab ich dafür die beste Spielwiese. Mit UTM VM erstellt - LM Studio für das LLM.

Pro: Sehr schnell - unkompliziert Installation - Hermes macht guten Eindruck

Probleme: Das LLM hat sich immer wieder in Loops verrannt - an dem Parameter rumspielen hat auch nix geändert - immer wieder wilde Arbeitsweisen - denke das lag aber an dem begrenzt Horizont des LLM

Aber warum ich es beendet habe: In UTM hab ich nur eine VM gehabt - die hat sich irgendwann verdoppelt in dem Menü - und ich dachte wenn ich die eine lösche bei laufender Maschine kann ja nix schief gehen... I'ts been a fairly long time since i've used this acc but one of my friends told me I should promote a project i've been working on, so... yeah!

I wrote a 3ds homebrew that boots a full linux environment in a risc v emulator in a few c files and only aboout ~170kb of code including all of the builtin nonessential example stuff like a js environment, fizzbuzz, cli doom, and more.

it's called 3DS-CLI, and it can be installed from universal updater or built from source and manually installed, and it's all open source cause free software is awesome!

Okey, found the issue you opened on #Joplin Github back in 2023 [1].

Sucks that the lead maintainer closed the issue as 'solved' without addressing the lack of proper encryption and that he suggested to 'continue the drama on Discord' as he put it.

So, is this issue — the lack of encryption of the Joplin password in the Linux SQLite app that you discovered — still open?

Don't tell me you think #Linux #Documentation is adequate.

Go install CachyOS and somehow manage to change both the console font in Limine, and upon bootup, and then tell me the documentation is adequate.

I give up. I'll just squint while logging in. You'd think stuff would be smart enough to say "Gee, the screen is 1080p, maybe let's not use an 8x16 console font. 🤦‍♂️

I just wrote a little bash script to help automate live VM migrations between hypervisors (using libvirt/kvm/qemu style virtualization).

I really miss being able to focus on this kind of progress with my infra. Chasing money gets tiring... I just want to build cool things that people will use.

I have decided that while there are a plethora of online resources available, including many wonderful blogs people share here (and I hope to count my own when it launches as part of that number) about FreeBSD, Linux, and so on, I will be trying to use books more often. Can’t have Google hide or hallucinate or slop sites spun up and drown out via SEO maximization a dead tree on my desk.

I will need to get the Big Book of PF, the Absolute BSD and Mastery Books too.

Weekend project that turned into infra I actually run daily: MastoSum.

The stack: RHEL host, 100% rootless Podman. Web on FastAPI, Celery worker/beat/flower, PostgreSQL 16, Valkey. All on userspace networking (pasta), images built & shipped by a self-hosted Forgejo runner. No root daemon, no privileged anything.

What it does: tracks technical hashtags all day and produces one daily briefing, every point linked to the original post + author. It reads only public hashtag timelines, credits every source, and trains on nothing.

And yes, an LLM writes the prose: a local Ministral model from French lab Mistral AI, running on my own hardware. No cloud, nothing leaving the box. Saying that plainly, not burying it. The whole design goal was to point readers *back* at the authors, not replace reading them.
