I'd love it if #Fedora's boot splash could have the ability to toggle using clear-text for the LUKS disk decryption passphrase input field, with a simple keyboard shortcut (F8, for example) when prompted on boot/soft-reboot.

I have long complex passphrases, and not seeing what I type is very problematic as I need to type it 2-3 times, as typos are hard to avoid.

I've been working hard on my Bubblewrapped Services (BWS) tool for self-hosting services on Linux. BWS is an alternative to using Docker/Podman. Instead of containers (which contain a whole OS), it uses sandboxes that re-uses the host OS. This makes it much more lightweight, easier to debug, and easier to manage.

What's new:
- FreeBSD support, using jails!

Just been testing out #linux_mint tonight, because I'm planning to offer a Linux install service for old windows computers via #TelfordRepairCafe and I wanted something beginner friendly. I'm a long term #Debian user, and not afraid of a bit of cli incantation or tinkering and trouble-shooting, but when it's for someone else, I don't want to hand them something they can't be expected to use easily, hence looking at Mint... I actually used it for a while in it's early days, pre-Cinnamon, but my distro hoping days are largely over, and I haven't tried it in YEARS.

Nothing much impresses me these days, really, but I have to say I'm fkn BLOWN AWAY by mint. The decision to use it for the RC is no longer tentative: it's going to be mint. #impressed #amazed #Linux

Ça fait bizarre d'avoir un outil de mise à jour simple des microgiciels pour linux.
J'avais intégré le fait que les constructeurs n'en ayant rien à carrer des utilisateurs de distros linux, on avait au mieux un blob à aller chercher au fin fond d'un obscure site web et se débrouiller pour trouver comment le flasher.
En fait, maintenant c'est même plus simple que sous Windows ; il y a un système qui ressemble assez à la gestion des paquets logiciels normaux (avec le choix entre interface graphique et ligne de commande). 😊

Asked my fellow nerds where to migrate from #NixOS, considering it's being overtaken by fascists, and there's no realistic way out of it. Here's what they came up with.

- Desktop: Opensuse Tumbleweed. Fairly new packages, rolling release, atomic updates with easy rollbacks, thanks to package manager and BTRFS snapshots.
- Dotfile manager: Chezmoi. Natively integrates with Git, has templating, integration with secrets managers, age.
- Service management: Cockpit. Not declarative, but a GUI; I'll take it. Provides handle to all server ops: updating packages, managing systemd services, managing containers, etc.
- Fleet management: Kubernetes on Talos Linux. Needs decent hardware and multiple machines, and is somewhat complex, so you'll know if you need it.

- c'est pour l'ordi de Simon, vieille machine lente, peu utilisée hormis pour qu'il consulte internet
- Simon est particulièrement nul en informatique (enfin c'est mon point de vue, alors qu'il utilise un pc au boulot, mais il ne sait pas comment c'est fait dedans, si ça ne ressemble pas à d'habitude c'est compliqué et il est incapable de gérer un problème)

La verdad es que no he hablado mucho de mi paso de #Windows a #Fedora, excepto alguna duda que pregunté pero...

Después de unos meses, puedo decir que es una maravilla. Me encanta el modo de trabajar con #Gnome. Le he puesto esquinas activas y básicamente me muevo por las ventanas con el ratón con gestos y la rueda con una rapidez maravillosa, y me ayuda a tener las ventanas más organizadas.

En Windows nunca usé escritorios virtuales, y eso que ahora tiene, pero no facilitaba nada su uso y cambiar entre ellos.

Y luego, las apps me están gustando. Suelen ser sencillas, para una función o dos y ya. Lo que precisamente las hace geniales y sencillas de usar.

Y lo mejor: yo decido cuándo y qué actualizar. Siempre.

Todo esto lo digo como usuario de nivel medio-bajo de informática. No tengo ni idea de programación ni terminales ni nada. Y aún así, no me ha resultado difícil más allá de hacer el USB para instalar Fedora 🤷🏽‍♂️

Por si esto sirve de ayuda o da ánimos a alguien para mirar más allá de #Windows.

I’m worried my PC (running NixOS) might be infected.

I was looking at System Monitor & was surprised to see GPU at nearly constant 100% which it normally isn’t. What’s more, this activity seems to disappear once I start poking around and looking at running processes.

I’m guessing some kind of cryptominer which is clever enough to try to hide its activity.

Any advice what to do/what it might be? Unfortunately I have no idea how long it’s been going on.

I have issue/question with/for #BSD. It's not like this issue is solved with #Linux, it still persist in linux, but there are ways to solve it.
I want Windows like expirience where :
a) I can copy binary built for NetBSD and will it work on other, let's say for example OpenBSD ? e.g. crossplatform compatibility, like for binary apps between win xp/7/10
b) is static linkage well adopted and implemented across BSD distros?
c) is that easy to install in BSD multiple version of same app, at same time, parallel. E.g. for example v1 & v2 & v3 of Nano editor, or Firefox. is that achievable with 1 command line? for same single shared user, without using bsd jail/container.

I hate doing storage administration on my personal hardware.

I want to replace a failing SSD in my laptop with a RAID1 (there are two slots). But I have an encrypted LVM for root.

Wow. All the big packages updating on my #Gentoo #Linux box. Been about 20 hours, 165 of 201 completed.

That's what I get for not updating for about 10 days.

Oh, and encfs is depreciated and going bye-bye. Luckily I have next weekend off and will have some time to switch all my local backups to #GoCryptFS.

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who commented. Luckily, I managed to bypass the security measures of Windows 10 and upgrade to Windows 11 on my licensed Windows 10 machine. I will monitor how it performs and then decide if I should do anything else. For now, everything seems okay.

We had a production outage on our Mastodon instance burningboard.net:

Root-cause analysis:

At around 16:23 today, the Linux OOMKiller did terminate two processes: java (Elasticsearch) and a PostgreSQL checkpoint process.

The termination of the pg checkpointer did put the database in a weird state (all connection attempts just saying "the database system is shutting down").

Immediate resolve:

pg_ctlcluster 17 main stop -m immediate
systemctl restart postgresql

Actions taken:
- Added 4GB of additional swap-space to the system
- Upgraded PostgreSQL to Version 18.0
- Added memory-limits in the systemd overrides for Elasticsearch

Everything operational again 🙂

Fixed an annoying bug in my tar backup wrapper scripts where I was getting all the existing files and then deleting the oldest until I was down to X backups. This worked unless the file path had spaces in (e.g. /media/paul/WD Backup Drive). I tried faffing about with IFS, read, find -print0, sort -z etc. but couldn't get them to work.

Then I realised the spaces would never be in the filenames, only the path. So I did:

cd ${PATH}
// find and delete backups using '.'
cd -

#Linux folks: I have a patch that I'd like to get merged into `Kconfig` - the GTK4 port I was working on while back. Sadly, it looks like the subsystem has went orphaned recently, and as much as I'd like to step up to maintain it I lack the deeper knowledge about the configuration subsystem (it's pretty out of my field of expertise). @SteffoSpieler Under typical usage, any "free" RAM is doing nothing to help system performance. I would say the best is however much used is needed for what the system is doing, and the rest used for cache/buffers, with a small amount free.

Contrary to somewhat popular opinion, it is NOT at all necessarily a bad sign if you have lots of cache/buffers and simultaneously swap usage. Most often that means that the OS prioritizes keeping in-use data in RAM and swapping out less-used data.

Seems the Debian uprade fom 12 (Bookworm) to 13 (Trixie) had some unexpected consequences, as the symlinks for /usr/bin/yarn , /usr/bin/yarnpkg and /usr/bin/pnpx were broken. But a quick removal of the defective symlinks plus a "corepack enable" did fix those shims again :-)

Initial support for using a #btrfs block size (bs) that is larger than the system's page size (ps) has landed in #Linux-next[1] and thus is slated for inclusion in #kernel 6.18. From the patch-set's cover letter[2]:

""This series enables the initial bs > ps support, with several limitations: No direct IO support […] No RAID56 support […] No encoded read/write/send […]

Currently bs > ps support is only to allow extra compatibility, e.g. allowing x86_64 to mount a btrfs which is originally created on ppc64 (64K page size, 64K block size). […] But this should also open a new door for btrfs RAID56 write hole problems in the future, by enforcing a larger block size and fixed power-of-2 data stripes, so that every write can fill a full stripe, just like RAIDZ.[…] ""
