@johanneskastl I can't speak to specific models because it's been a while since I was in the market for a new either scanner or printer; but generally, if a printer lists IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) and Postscript support, then it will work on Linux with CUPS printing.
For the scanner part, look at SANE's (that was someone's way of saying Scanner Access Now Easy) supported devices list. Even the simplest scanning front-end applications support a "scan and print" / "copy" function.
Dear Fediverse,
my father-in-law needs a new printer/scanner/copy combo, that needs to be supported by Linux (now that I got him away from Windows).
I found the HP printers being supported by HPLIP:

Any experiences with the OfficeJet Pro 9132e / Officejet Pro 9120 / OfficeJetPro 8132e?
As far as I found out all of them should support copying from the device (without a compuer needed). Ink will be expensive for all of them (regardless of the manufacturer).
All of the recent Epson and Brother printers that I found seem not to be supported, at least I did not find them on openprinting.org.

256k packages were downloaded from my #Linux #kernel vanilla #copr repositories[1] for #Fedora Linux 41 during its lifetime, which ends today, as it becomes EOL.
That's ~30k more than for Fedora 39, and 20k less than Fedora 40[2].

After 5 years of trying to convince my friends to switch to #linux, they have finally done it! Now they won't stop praising it 😂 No more microsoft in their data ❤️
An astonishing day has arrived - my 12 year old came to me and said “Windows 11 has turned in to complete trash. I checked and all the games I play run on Linux. Can you teach me how to install Linux on my computer?”
The slide deck for my #systemd talk at @nluug tomorrow passed the 80 slides 😬
It's a "speedrun", so we will see how far we come. Interestingly enough, I see possibilities to create even more presentations after this. There are so many things possible and I think #Linux users may benefit by having a better understanding of the full suite.
Probably I will also shoot some videos soon for Linux Lorem, after cutting this presentation up into multiple topics and going more in-depth in each of them.
Another data corruption, fortunately not fatal, with btrfs. Two mirrored disks that have little activity. On the same server, Proxmox 9, there is also a ZFS pool (mirrored, more active). Same type of disks.
An employee mistakenly connected an electric heater to a socket protected by the UPS, and the server rebooted brutally.
Upon reboot, one of the two btrfs disks reported:
[ 167.015266] BTRFS error (device sdd): parent transid verify failed on 873906176 wanted 998679 found 998677
[ 167.017007] BTRFS error (device sdd): parent transid verify failed on 873906176 wanted 998679 found 998677
[ 167.052517] BTRFS error (device sdd): open_ctree failed mount: /btrfs: can't read superblock on /dev/sdd.
Result: unable to mount, even in degraded mode. The only way was to disconnect sdd and mount the other disk in degraded mode.
No issues with the ZFS pool.
Needless to say, I'm now copying the data to ZFS, and before tomorrow, these two disks will be a new ZFS pool.
On #linux, when mounting an untrusted #filesystem (eg: external drive) the filesystem might have executable files with capabilities declared in their extended attributes. This is pretty similar to files being #suid. Is there an equivalent to nosuid so I can #mount the filesystem ignoring those capabilities?

Has anyone on nixos spent time trying to tune their webcam for video calls?
I'm currently using the cameractls package to manage my webcam, but I feel like it's not doing quite enough. Zoom, Google Meet, and other vendors regularly stutter even if my settings are at the lowest possible quality, and lowering the quality sort of feels like the only move I can make.
I have to immage in the big OSes have some baked in kernel magic to make webcam footage stream well, and I get the sense that you should he able to replicate this in Linux with something like v4l. That said, I'm not clear what direction I should be tuning in or what part of the stack I should even be looking at. There are a lot of video services in nixos, but it's not clear if flicking one on over the other will lead to any clear results.
Does anyone have a basic config or guide that solves this?

- Fact: time is an irreplaceable critical resource, too often in short supply
- Resources: finite patience, focus, attention; infinite idgaf
Requisite Changes
- Core hardware from HomeLab will be moved to the colo this month (systems which matter)
- Likely much will be given to specific OSS projects for free, easiest for those local to Milpitas (colo)

[1/3] Well, this is a pickle...
I was recording a video about Zorin OS 18, using a fresh installation on the Framework 13 laptop, and trying to approach things like a new Linux user might. Specifically an "every day" user coming from Windows.
In the middle of the "Welcome Tour" the display started graphically glitching out. It persisted when I stopped OBS. Persisted after I rebooted. I did a few test runs with OBS before recording for real and everything was fine...
I've been playing with LXC containers and other things a bit lately. There's a part of the nerd in me that says I should migrate all my stuff to the cool new thing. There's the more pragmatic part of me that recognizes everything is already working, systemd offers plenty of options to lock things down just about as much as a container, and it would be more difficult to do certain things, such as pass thru my single GPU to Jellyfin, if it were in a proper container.

I want to try switching to Linux.
However, I cannot find a working remote desktop system that allows me to take over the same session that I was using locally so that I can switch back and forth between being at the computer and being remote without having to log out. Blanking/Locking the local screen while I'm connected remotely is also a need.
Basically I need it to work as close to Microsoft's RDP as possible. If anyone can help me with this, you'll convert me to a Linux user.

Does anyone know why a desktop would attempt to PXE boot from the network when an ethernet cable is plugged in before powering up, even though the boot order is: USB drive, hard drive (of which there is only one), network? I switched to wired recently as wireless was a bit flakey, despite the desktop being <2m from the router.
Secure boot is enabled (I didn't enable it so presumably it was on by default) and the hard drive has full disk encryption using LUKS if that makes a difference.

@gperson Umm, that doesn't seem quite right.
I took the x86-64 assembler you posted (I don't have an ARM cross-compiling environment handy) and simply:
$ cat >src.s
...
^D
$ as -o bin src.s
$
According to `file`, this gives me a "ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped" which is 1080 bytes in size. Stripped, that reduces to 576 bytes.
That's `as` from Debian's binutils package version 2.44-3 on Trixie.
This appears to be very interesting...
Apparently, a basic 64-bit #ARM #Linux assembly program that accepts user input, allocating a stack buffer to store it temporarily, and then echoing it to the user is apparently only 616 bytes compared to a 64-bit #x86 equivalent, which is 8600 bytes. That's quite a massive size difference! However, there's a caveat: this is after both programs are stripped with 'strip --strip-all'. Nevertheless, it's still quite a huge size difference!
For my ARM testing machine, I'm using my file server as that's a #RaspberryPi 3 B+ running #AlpineLinux, while I'm using my desktop running #ArchLinux. The former distro has binutils 2.44, while the latter distro has binutils 2.45.1. I'm not sure if anything there is a factor to anything else, but it's there for anyone to ponder! 😄

You run curl http://example.com and now you have some HTML in your terminal but what actually happened? Linux walks your bytes through a small set of well‑defined steps: pick a path, learn a neighbor’s MAC address, queue the packet, ask the NIC to send it, then reverse that on the other side.
This post tries to explain that path as simply as I can. If you’ve used #Linux, run curl, or poked at ip addr before, you’re qualified to read this. No deep #kernel background needed. […]""
We are excited and enthusiastic about Valve’s new Linux hardware, and then angry and disappointed about Mozilla’s latest nonsense.
@petko @rysiek @mozillaofficial Librewolf is clearly a fork.
Also, i get that everyone dislikes #AI and for good reason, but it's now also going to be acceptable for it to be used in development of the #linux kernel itself.
There are places where it works, and places where it's annoying and no one asked for it. Mozilla adding it to Firefox is obviously the latter of the two but AI overall is here to stay in some regards obviously.

@stefano @christopher I am not sure if I'd say #Linux is becoming like #Windows. I do recall similar statements made on the Debian-User mailing list on a previous release when xorg introduced autoconfiguration. A lot of people were pissed that it was making choices for you instead of manually configuring the xorg.conf file.
Honestly, that was a good thing. Painful doesn't begin to describe it but users were unaware they could still hand-configure the file.
There has been, however, more stuff added to Linux over the last several years. Call it bloat, call it whatever you want. OSes change. But it has been gradually moving away from simplicity.
I miss the simplicity.
However, to reply to your original post, coming from COTS solutions, sometimes the vast amount of choice can be overwhelming. For instance, when it comes to #FreeBSD #jails it used to just be jails. Now, it's thin, thick, classic, networking. I understand they have their places but it would be helpful to provide more detailed explanations, tutorials, or best practices for each. The FreeBSD Handbook is good but just scratches the surface but often leaves more questions. It would help with learning and in part...marketing.
On a side note: The FreeBSD Handbook is a great resource but there are opportunities to improve it, like tailoring it to new users (better empathy), best practices, architectural examples, and links to additional resources and info.

Last week I had a chat with a colleague who is highly specialized in Microsoft solutions. Young but not too young, smart, not very up to date simply because he has little time for anything else. His specialization depends entirely on where he works, not on personal interest. Lately he seemed a bit disillusioned with some choices made by "other operating systems", and he was starting to consider moving his personal projects toward Microsoft as well, since he already had the experience. Still, he said it with boredom. With the attitude of someone who is tired of wasting time.
He had heard of the BSDs but had never tried installing them. He was convinced that there were no decent hypervisors outside the Linux world and that KVM belonged to Linux alone. I had the terrible idea of showing him the BSDs, how great bhyve is, and how nvmm on NetBSD uses qemu underneath, making it almost a replacement for KVM in many setups. He lit up with the look of someone waking up from a long sleep. I also had the terrible idea of showing him illumos and its distributions. He had no clue it existed and thought old, great Solaris had been dead for years thanks to Oracle.
He called me a little while ago. He was furious. He spent the whole weekend doing tests and now he has no idea what to use among FreeBSD with bhyve, NetBSD with nvmm, and illumos with bhyve or kvm. He is slowly starting to explore jails and illumos zones. He was annoyed (in a positive way) because now he does not know what to pick since everything feels so different from what he was used to, and he found advantages in each option.
I am obviously happy about it, but I also wonder: instead of reinventing the wheel every time, would it not sometimes be better to simply broaden our horizons?

Hello, I have some news regarding my adventures in Linux again, this time I hope I am seriously able to commit. I have had a history of not committing to things, since I was a child. It has been insanely painful for me to last with something for longer than a few months or weeks. Rant aside, I am now using Fedora and I'm planning on fully engaging with the community via the Security Team and the KDE SIG, with ideas to join the Rust SIG as a means of commitment.
I recently switched to Fedora after some issues regarding my boot setup. My system at the time was an had two FAT32 partitions which were labeled for Alpine Linux and Arch Linux, one LUKS+LVM partition with swap, Alpine Linux and Arch Linux logical volumes, with UKI. My system was partially easy to maintain, but a few weeks after that install I noted Alpine was having issues with kernel modules, and I was required to use Arch for that time being. Finally, my snapping point was reached when both UEFI entries just vanished. The entire point of having two distributions at once for me was gone. After hearing that Fedora 43 was out, I went to grab a USB and a copy of Fedora Everything, and installed Fedora 43 with KDE Plasma with no OOTB issues.
I did make my own customisations later down the line, such as adopting hardened_malloc as my global malloc implementation by using secureblue's COPRA package. hardened_malloc is better regarding security than glibc's malloc especially regarding heap corruption and reduction of metadata. There are also RAM consumption benefits. This made me feel like it was a good idea to install hardened_malloc as my global allocator. This customisation did come at the cost of GTK applications bailing however, although you could fix it with LD_PRELOAD and a Bash script.
I've tried to apply for the Fedora Security Team, and KDE SIG through two sponsors and now I am simply waiting for a response. I shouldn't, and wasn't expecting a reply soon, so I'm happy to wait out the month honestly. I just have to hope the application gets through and gets read which I believe will happen. Maybe I can even try the Rust SIG.
I still have plans to use Alpine Linux. My Samsung Galaxy S9 is still not working on postmarketOS, and I want to try and port the device for the mainline Linux source code tree. I would still have to carry some of Alpine Linux's work if I did port postmarketOS as I couldn't live off of it forever. As such, I still will be using Alpine Linux mainly for my phone and maybe low-spec servers. I have sadly leeched off of Arch Linux which I do apologise for, but I didn't have anything to contribute to at that time.
That's all I have to say for now. Good night.

I'm in Australia right now. I can boot my home PC via Wake On LAN to access my files if I have to. I placed a webcam in front of it so that I can verify that it actually does so.
It's weird seeing my computer 16.500 km away from me. It feels like my own little Mars mission. Especially with how SSH feels at 300-400 ms latency.
And yes, that's a drinking glass I forgot on my desk.

Hello #Linux people
I have acquired a surplus, old MacBook Pro 15” (2018 –2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 & 16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4, UK keyboard) and I would like to investigate if Linux could serve my current computing needs. And if not now, I would benefit - I think - from having basic skills and experience of an alternative platform to OSX (and more so Windows). Something less corporate.
I did an upgrade of my laptop yesterday, and after putting back all my files from the $HOME backup it looked nice.
Today I tried to open Libreoffice, and the honeymoon was over.

I have already removed .config/libreoffice to no avail.
Any suggestions? Feel free to boost widely.

✅ Okay, after some more testing, looks like it's somehow related to the Wireguard tunnel, not the upgrade (I might have simply had bad luck with timing and noticing a problem and jumping to the conclusion that it was related to the upgrade).
Previous kernel, same tunnel, same issue.
New kernel, different tunnel, not a problem.
So likely NOT a Debian Trixie 13.2 issue after all! Good! I can poke at this separately.

Anyone else having IPv6 issues (possibly with Wireguard) after the Debian Trixie 13.2 update just now, which includes a kernel upgrade 6.12.48-1 to 6.12.57-1? It was working before, and after the upgrade I don't seem to get any IPv6 default route. (I do get an IPv6 assignment.)
Haven't had any opportunity yet to do much troubleshooting, but don't see anything obviously relevant in the Debian bug tracker or debian-user archives.

Debian 13.2 is out. As always with a bunch of security and bug fixes.
To summarize some things I've learned lately. chroot jails are useful, but if your goal is to cordone off systemd services without a full VM or LXC container (necessitating separate system updates), systemd has lots, and I mean "lots" of options to containerize services; private tmp folders, hiding other users' processes, etc.. systemd will create its own chroot at /proc/PID/root and then mount things inside there according to the options you specify in your service file.
Saya masuk kategori Stage 4 karena menggunakan #Debian 13.2 😎

When I reboot Linux, I'm still amazed at how fast KDE desktop loads. As soon as I see the taskbar it is functional.
When I visit Windows, it takes a minute after the desktop has already loaded, for everything to function normally. Launching apps are still waiting for useless background services to load etc.

Hi #Linux, ever heard of https://paldo.org?
paldo is a Upkg driven GNU/Linux distribution. It's kind of a mix of a source and a binary distribution. Even though it builds packages like a source distribution it provides binary packages.

paldo stands for "pure adaptable linux distribution" and they try to accomplish this in every package.

#Debian 13.2 has been released. This doesn't constitute a major new version, just a point release with various security and stability updates. To get it, if you're already running Debian, just install your system updates like normal and reboot when you can to load the updated kernel.
#LinuxAudio #BitwigStudio folk. What are my options for reducing CPU demand when running a session? Setups which were very efficient under Windows are considerably more demand heavy in #Linux. I am assuming this is a result of my having yet to install a RT kernel, or finesse the audio settings for #PipeWire. Are there some primers or pointers towards resources that I can use to better tune the performance of my system?

I may have just bricked a laptop trying to install UEFI firmware recommended by Pop!_OS.
Every time I think I'm finally going to use Linux as my daily driver, something like this happens.
Fortunately, I have other PCs I can use.
Laptop isn’t bricked! Thankfully, I was able to do a fresh install of Pop!_OS. Guess I need to skip the firmware update this time.
But stuff like this is why it’s still hard for me to recommend Linux to anyone who doesn’t have the time, patience, or wherewithal to be their own tech support. It’s frustrating enough sometimes to help my non-tech-savvy relatives with their Apple devices, Windows PCs, and Android phones.

@stefano Great post! I've been using #Linux #FreeBSD for about two decades and want to share my experiences. For context, Linux became my daily driver and I dabbled in FreeBSD on the side.
As a newcomer to both the #technology and #culture of #Linux and the BSDs, *back then* there was more toxicity. And by toxicity I mean abrasive and unhelpful responses ("RTFM!") or some kind of "l337" attitudes in various mailing lists and forums. This, of course, was before YouTube and Reddit, where the former mediums were more prevalent.
Some Linux distros were friendlier than others. In those days, the #Debian mailing lists and forums were a rough place for newcomers and it drove a lot of people away. I left the forums because of that. I rarely post to the mailing lists but for other reasons.
At some point, there was considerable effort to improve the etiquette in said mediums, particularly the mailing lists. Sure, some fiery disagreements can take place but overall people are friendly and welcoming.
FreeBSD, on the other hand, has been a more positive experience. Yes, there are people who are vocal about their contempt for Linux, but they aren't disrespectful to other people.
Having witnessed both communities grow and change over the years, there's definitely less toxicity and FreeBSD is still a more welcoming community.
First #Linux #Kernel #Panic ever in 22 years.
It’s not even a real one!
Since #Fedora 42, the generated kernel images seem to be larger than how they used to be. And because I prevented the deletion of the last 7 kernels, the `/boot` partition ran out of space, so the `dracut` couldn’t generate the required images for the newly updated kernel.
So, My advice if you plan to keep the last 10 kernels, give `/boot` at least 3GB.
Or 5GB for future-proof.
1GB seems not enough anymore!
I've taken the time to read this IT notes Story where we are reminded to use Open Source Code in the diverse way it's intended
I can give you an example regarding the _if tools_
**ifconfig** is in my _muscle memory_ the things that I need executed from this program just fly out of my fingers in reflex mode
I've been using the if tools ever since we needed to _compile everything_ ourselves, when we wanted to run an Open Source Environment, where the kernel was written and delivered in source code only.
If this is the first toot you read by me, I've been with the Open Source community on the Linux side since the alpha versions were coded and distributed through Usenet, in comp.os.unix.*
In that period you were grateful when a task set that you needed to execute, had a program, which would either make your task easier or better manageable, than doing everything by hand in a laborious manner
Ever since the beginning there are different GNU programs, written in the Richard Stallman period, that can do similar things. All you need to do is choose what you like and stick with it
If you do not like the way it works, you can fork it & change the code, if you don't know how to write a line of code, there are _manual pages_ available which you can use as teaching methods to learn how to code yourself
All you need to be for that is an _autodidact_
You have the power of the **Source Code** readily available right in front of you
At a certain point in time _Bram Molenaar_ did not like the way VI worked; he want it more than vi offered. At this point in time Bram Molenaar programmed vim on the _Amiga_ computer. Since the true Open Source form was followed vim was also distributed in Source form and was happily adopted by others who were thinking in a similar manner as Bram Molenaar and they started to contribute to that program.
vi is a vital program on UNIX systems. What Bram has made, is create a _choice_ for people who want it more than what vi offered.
# vim & vi happily coexist!
## This is the beauty of Open Source
At a later point in time this is also what happened with the programmer who wanted more than what the if-tool set offers. Thus the command set of _ip_ was programmed. Similar to vi and vim they happily coexist.
### However on the distribution level something changed.
After a couple of decades I noticed that traditional tools, that have been tried, tested, stable and have withstood the test of time, were dropped from the base installations. You have to go and fetch them yourself. It was even done with _critical tools_ like the if tool set. It's not just one distribution that's doing it but different distributions.
I was busy with an installation; at a certain point I needed **ifconfig** to work on my network interface devices; I needed to configure something on the fly. Imagine my facial expression when I detected that ifconfig wasn't in the base installation!
The machine was in a _chicken egg_ situation because I had &no access to the network_ I had to stop, go to another place fetch the if tools separately, find out that they were dropped for reasons which were totally irrelevant to my work, go back to the machine, install them separately and in the process waste many valuable minutes of time.
It was then that I started to notice the pattern a pattern of **polarization** removing tools which are critical to base installations without leaving a warning
I had to _change_ my setup routine which has been working for decades in a _flawless_ manner, because someone somewhere decided that a good tool set became obsolete.
This polarization is not only in the choice of what commands are chosen to be in the base installation of a distribution, it's in many different sections of the open source community which is what Stefano has shed some light upon.
Polarization because of diversity is totally unnecessary, happy and peaceful coexistance is key
* You can love vim yet cherish vi
* You can glorify emacs yet admire vim
* I can love XCFE cherish LXDE, admire KDE & like GNOME all simultaneously
Depending up on what I'm doing, what machine I am working on (SBC server embedded system), what is needed on the task at hand, I simply adapt and work with the diverse tools available for free.
There is absolutely now need for polarisation or Toxic behavior in the Open Source ENV:
Another example is the direction that Gnome went many years ago.
In that period I used Enlightenment, Gnome, KDE and FVWM simultaneously on different machines. All WM are working in a manner that I like. When however the Gnome programmers decided to strip configuration features of the Desktop Environment, I didn't go on a rant, I didn't bother to fork, because of the massive amount of work involved.
I just left in Peace

Imagine running, for example, Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Office on Linux. 🤯
For years, Linux users have used DistroBox to integrate Apps from other Linux distros into their Linux Install.
For example, a Debian App (Deb) on Fedora, or a Fedora App (Rpm) on Debian. Or even an Arch Linux App on either.
Would it be great if you could do the same thing with Windows Apps on Linux? That is what WinBoat does. 🤯
This Isn't a Battle
After reading a post describing the FreeBSD community as 'toxic', I share a different perspective. This isn't a battle. It's a reflection on coexistence, the original Open Source spirit, and the quiet richness of taking a different path.

Under the hood quiet progress to keep your machine secure:
"Fedora Linux 43 will be the first release with RPM 6.0. Like I said, this should go unnoticed to end-users, but it is a significant change. RPM 6.0 provides some interesting security enhancements, like multiple key signing of packages. This should help future-proof package signing as we transition to post-quantum-crypto OpenPGP keys in future releases."
What is disturbing to me is that the term side loading has been invented to make users think that they are not allowed to install any program on their computers other than those sanctioned by some company.
People are also made to believe that their phones are special devices while in fact they are simply very powerful small single board computers.
Instead of getting angry or frustrated the Open Source Community should band together so that full-blown Linux based Operating Systems can be made available for the masses, be installed as easy as standard Linux distributions on X86 and on SBCs is like the Raspberry Pi ARM family, so that they can remove the bloatware which Google dictates and then install any Linux flavor designed for their Android computers

The more I learn about #Microsoft #Windows, the more I don't want to use it.
I've started the process of transitioning over to #Linux (more specifically #ZorinOS ) and I'm liking how it is working.
So far I've had two big problems:
1. Sync.com doesn't have a Linux app, which is unfortunate as I switched to them from Google drive to have better security with a Canadian-based server.
2. Family Tree Maker - I'm debating if it is worth trying to run it in Linux, or if I should just use it on a windows machine when I use it.
Otherwise, I've found workaround for most other things including the fact that my favorite old school graphics program (Paint Shop Pro version 4.12-circa 1996) runs nicely in Wine.

🗂️ My computer stores everything I work with: drafts, notes, datasets, scripts, models, simulations results, old archives — and, of course, a ridiculous amount of literature. 😅
Recently I discovered something that felt like unlocking a hidden level: local full-text search.
I’d used basic search tools before, but then I tried Recoll — an open-source search engine for UNIX-like systems — and it completely changed how I navigate my research files.
It honestly feels like I found a new kind of “computer game,” and I’ll probably keep playing with it for months. 🤣

@fox how many clipboards managers are written for wayland, how many Xrand reimplementations, how many remote desktop hacks, when in Xorg XRDP works for them all.
Why on Hyprland (wayland) I can run a headless desktop after login in and connect another PC to that remote headless desktop and use it as if local (terrible slow though) but I cannot do the exact same thing WITHOUT a running Hyprland session bceause it needs a GPU...why a GPU for a headless session that is not going to pass through my GPU?

The recording from the LF webinar "Update on Key Improvements to #Linux & #NFS" is available now:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3HIIQe_cJI
From the abstract (https://www.linuxfoundation.org/webinars/update-on-key-improvements-to-linux-and-nfs-creating-a-high-performance-standard-for-ai-workloads?hsLang=en):
""With an ongoing series of updates to the #Linux NFS kernel and pNFSv4.2, standard distributions now include key features for high-performance workloads and the distributed hybrid storage environments needed for AI and other GPU-based use cases. These enhancements enable modern data centers and clouds to support such workloads globally with standard Linux, and without the need for proprietary clients to support multi-vendor data environments.
In this session we will cover the latest kernel additions up through #Kernel 6.18, to enable such use cases, and look ahead to future enhancements coming in the next year.""
@nixCraft ...just yesterday, at a meeting there was a 30min rant from most of the staff regarding "the disrupting, unnecessary, undesired - yet forced-again changes" by updates of their previously "favorite mainstream OS":
Now they're asking for help replacing more and more IT parts with "stable, less-changing" #FOSS 😎 and #Linux. 🐧
Quick reminder on the likely reason why Valve's New Steam Machine only supports #HDMI 2.0:
""At this time an open source HDMI 2.1 implementation is not possible without running afoul of the HDMI Forum requirements.""
This is what Alex Deucher, the maintainer of the amdgpu #kernel driver, said one and a half years ago here:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1417#note_2303163
And from the ticket it looks like the problem remains.
See also Alex's earlier comment from early 2021 in the ticket:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1417#note_830547
""HDMI 2.1 is not available on #Linux due to the HDMI Forum.""
The (new) Steam Machine is a semi-custom desktop PC.
Marketed to a massive mainstream audience.
And it ships with Linux.
And it's now part of an entire Linux gaming ecosystem.
This is a big, big deal.

It's incredible how silent my laptop with Linux Mint is compared to when it was running Windows 11.
With the latter the fans would start kicking in at random points suggesting it was doing all sorts of behind-the-scenes shenanigans.

@gooba42 @Benhm3 Right. In almost any shell you are likely to encounter on a Linux system, "&&" means "execute the next command if the previous command exited successfully". There is also the semicolon (";") which separates two commands unconditionally.
So:
cd /path/foo && bar
will execute "bar" if and only if changing directory into /path/foo was successful.
cd /path/foo; bar
will execute "bar" in /path/foo if cd was successful, or the directory you were already in if the cd fails.

""Things remain calm and small, and everything looks pretty normal.
In other words: it all looks just the way I like it at this point: small and boring.
Let's hope it stays that way,
Linus""
So... @fedora has made a policy explicitly allowing AI code. So I have to change my home distro.
@gentoo and @netbsd both have specific policies against it, but I ain't about doing a Gentoo install (sorry, guys, I love you for this, but I need a binary first distro), and NetBSD ain't great for gaming AFAIK.
So... any other Distros wanna step up and do the right thing? @archlinux? @opensuse? @debian? #VoidLinux? @alpinelinux?
Just a public statement that says "No, we don't want that crap" would be plenty --- I understand the difficulty of enforcing the policy, but setting it as a community/commit standard would go a long way towards making a lot of us feel better.
(Boost for visibility, please?)

📂 Source data: 719 GB in my /home
📦 Packed size: 419 GB
📉 Actual storage: 390 GB after compression
That’s more than a 45% reduction, and the upload to remote storage is much faster now.
For someone who handles geospatial and scientific data daily, this is huge.
It’s not just about saving space — it’s about making the workflow lighter, faster, and more sustainable.

This deletes all files, literally all files!
find . -delete -name "*.php"

On visually selected lines:
:'<,'>s/foo/bar/g
Or by line numbers:
:10,20s/foo/bar/g
Or relative to cursor:
:.,+5s/foo/bar/g
(current line to +5)
You can use -5 to search 5 lines above your cursor too.
You can also use the substitution with`:global`. For example, replace only on

It took me two days of learning and re-learning, and some of it was frustrating since I'm rusty, but I finally made some headway in a gaming benchmark project AND figured out how to chart frametimes!
I wanted to see first-hand if/how all the updates to the Mesa + Vulkan graphics stack improved in the last 2 years. Here, Dirt Rally exhibits much better frame pacing, lower frametimes ,less spikes. Resulting in smoother gameplay. And this is only on a Radeon 780M APU.
Anyway, having fun :)

Tu connais ? Tu as expérimenté ? avec #windows / #linux ?

Merci.

Is there any "network device" simulators out there that would allow me to host 20+ network devices on one host to troubleshoot DHCP issues?
I would like to spin up a VLAN between some infrastructure switches, a DHCP server and a host. The host will just request a bunch of DHCP operations over a few hours simulating multiple devices. I prefer using it on #FreeBSD but would accept #Linux, macOS, and if I have to Windows.
