By any chance, does anyone have experience with getting Linux (the Nix OS distro specifically) to work well with Nvidia gpu’s? I installed Nix Os on my laptop a few months ago and I can not get its Nvidia GPU to co-operate no matter what I seem to do. I know it’s most likely something with the driver setup I just don’t know what. I managed to get it usable but Blender and OBS in particular are really really struggling, and I’m not sure where I’m going wrong 🙃

Not the installation process.
Not finding a distro.
Not getting programs to work.
Not troubleshooting.
Not hardware compatibility.

The most common complaint about Linux I've seen is this:
For a normal computer user, asking for help is just about impossible.

They ask a simple question and:
People respond "Did you Google it?"
People complain that the question wasn't asked "correctly".
People respond "RTFM"
People get mad??? at them for making an easy mistake.

We can't expect normal people to know to, or even know how to deal with any of that stuff.

Search engines these days are awful, manuals are hard to read for most people (especially stuff like ArchWiki), and normal people make mistakes we think are easily avoidable.

The solution to making Linux more popular is not ruthless promotion. The solution is to actually help the people who are trying to use it.

Kritische Sicherheitslücken in SvxLink – sofort aktualisieren

Das SvxLink-Projekt hat vor wenigen Stunden die Version 26.05.1 veröffentlicht. Sie schließt vierzehn Sicherheitslücken, von denen zwei als kritisch eingestuft sind – die schwerste mit 9,8 von 10 möglichen Punkten. Betroffen sind alle Versionen bis einschließlich 26.05, und zwar rückwirkend über mehr als ein Jahrzehnt. Seit heute sind die technischen Einzelheiten über die Sicherheits-Mailingliste oss-security öffentlich bekannt; damit steht jedem, der es darauf anlegt, eine genaue Anleitung zur Verfügung.

Zur Einordnung der Zahl 9,8: Sicherheitslücken werden weltweit nach einem einheitlichen Schema bewertet, dem Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS). Es vergibt Punkte von 0 bis 10. Ab 9,0 gilt eine Lücke als kritisch – das ist die höchste von vier Stufen, und dort landen nur wenige Prozent aller je gemeldeten Schwachstellen. Der Wert 9,8 bedeutet konkret: Der Angriff kommt über das Netz, er braucht kein Passwort, der Sysop muss nichts anklicken oder bestätigen, und der Aufwand ist gering. Was ein Angreifer im Erfolgsfall anrichten kann, reicht je nach System vom Absturz der Relaissteuerung bis zur Ausführung eigenen Programmcodes mit den Rechten des SvxLink-Prozesses.

Die schwerste Lücke steckt im EchoLink-Verzeichnisdienst. Beim Einlesen der Stationsliste wird die Stationsbeschreibung ungeprüft in einen zu kleinen Speicherbereich kopiert; ein manipulierter oder unterwegs abgefangener Verzeichnisserver kann darüber fremden Code auf dem Relaisrechner ausführen. Die Verbindung zum Verzeichnisserver läuft unverschlüsselt, ein Mitschneiden und Verändern ist also technisch unaufwendig. Betroffen sind SvxLink mit EchoLink-Modul ebenso wie der Client Qtel auf dem heimischen PC.

Die zweite kritische Lücke betrifft RemoteTrx: Ist kein AUTH_KEY konfiguriert, erhält jeder erreichbare Rechner ohne jede Anmeldung vollen Zugriff auf den Transceiver, einschließlich Sendetastung. Wer dann unter dem Rufzeichen der Relaisfunkstelle sendet, entscheidet nicht mehr der Sysop.

Musste gerade Windows 11 auf einer virtuellen Maschine nutzen, aus Gründen, es war ein komisches Gefüh - was macht es, macht es noch was, was soll das jetzt, auf was wartet es, warum tut sich nix, wieso ist das so umständlich 😂 wie schnell man sich an was Besseres gewöhnt hat. Beim Arbeitgeber erwarte ich diese komische Software und grausliche experience, aber sobald ich einen privaten Rechner einschalte, erwarte ich ein funktionales OS mit Performance.

@reeeen meine Erfahrung - und ich beschäftige mich wirklich sehr ungern mit Technik, ich nutze sie nur und dann soll sie bitte einfach funktionieren: mit Hilfe eines Linuxhelden Mint installiert und meine Daten vom Mac geholt, eine kurze Einführung gemacht und seitdem komme ich fast ganz ohne Hilfe klar. Es ist echt einfacher, als man vorher glaubt. Kann jedem nur Mut machen zu wechseln. 👍

Bei debian ringen sie um eine haltung zur künstlichen intelligenz in der distribuzjon [englischsprachiges dokument].

Guys, it’s been a long time since I’ve been this happy with a computer purchase! Fedora recognized all my hardware perfectly right out of the box, and everything works great!

I’ve had very different experiences with my various mini-PCs made in Chinese factories using child labor, especially with the built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cards...

Thunderbolt 4 is also recognized correctly, as are all devices connected to it. That didn’t work at all or only partially with the others (for example, the monitor only worked via the USB-C port on the monitor, but there was no image via the monitor’s Thunderbolt port; when the Logitech receiver was connected through the monitor, the mouse movements and keyboard inputs were choppy, etc.). But here: problem-free and fast via a single Thunderbolt 4 cable!

The installation was done in a few minutes - that’s Linux for you. A Windows installation takes many hours for this… and then you’re left with nothing but spyware and ads on your computer.

Conclusion: Asus NUC 16 Pro - highly recommended for every Linux user!

Schön schön, der 3,5" Einbauschacht ist gar kein realer 3,5" Schacht. Da gehen nur spezielle Bauformen rein die hinten unten verschlankt sind 🙈, somit passt der Wechselrahmen nicht und auch dessen 2,5" Festplatte.

Werde ich dann bei Zeiten die interne Festplatte gegen eine größere ersetzten wenn man sich die noch leisten kann 🤷🏻‍♂️.

While I consider Debian-Testing with #Gnome my main OS, I found myself mostly using #Mint with Cinnamon and Cinnamenu. Reason being, while Gnome feels more modern, I just don't like using it. Mein Rechner ist jetzt wieder fertig eingerichtet, hat etwas gedauert (in der Urlaubszeit mache ich halt öfter mal was anderes als am Rechner zu sitzen ;)),
Nur eine Sache habe ich jetzt, die kriege ich nicht in den Griff.
Wie sagt man? Man kauft sich einen Computer, um Probleme zu beseitigen, die man ohne ihn nicht hätte.

Vielleicht hat ja jemand von Euch eine Idee?

Tuxedo infinity Notebook mit aktuellem Tuxedo OS (basiert auf Ubuntu 24.04 LTS) neu installiert). Es wurde komplett neu installiert, nicht durch Updates.
Immer mal wieder, NATÜRLICH nicht reproduzierbar, verhält sich mein Touchpad aber seltsam und scheint Klicks zu generieren, wo ich keine mache.
Ich gehe normal wirklich ohne Druck drüber, nur um den Mauszeiger von hier nach dort zu bewegen, und es wird dann der dort befindliche Text markiert, Icons verschoben, oder ein Button geklickt, den ich nicht klicken wollte. und nach einiger Zeit ist das dann wieder vorbei (Ich würde mal sagen paar Minuten), und es läuft wieder richtig.
Zu leicht eingestellt ist es eigentlich nicht, da ich bei gewollten Klicks das schon sehr bewusst machen muss, damit er reagiert.

Das macht einen echt kirre.

The main objectives I have is evaluating FreeBSD to run a #Luanti gameserver. Some sources indicate that FreeBSD has better networking and IO management than #Linux. So this case might apply.

Other than that, we'll also have a secondary CTF server in the case main server is full or laggy.

It's not quite as clean as “just open /dev/memfd lol” and does still involve securely generating a temporary file name, though.

I wish #Linux (and #FreeBSD) had a device /dev/memfd that, when opened, actually gives you a fresh memfd.

Then you could use memfd with shell scripts:

It'd be like using temporary files, except they automatically get deleted when the script terminates, and aren't visible to other processes (so there's no need to securely generate a temporary file name).

Ja, der Desktop meines alten Acer-Schätzchens sieht fast genau aus wie die Tage. Aber unter de Haube ist alles neu. Man beachte das Menü-Logo. :-)

Hier haben wir #Manjaro #XFCE bei Arbeit. #SparkyLinux war nett, aber das Bessere ist der Feind des Guten. Und ich habe nun mal eine Schwäche für #Arch. Schon des mit #yay, #pacseek und #pamac leicht zugänglichen Softwareangebots wegen.

#Fooyin hier zu installieren, war eine Sache von Sekunden, unter #Sparky (#Debian) leider wie berichtet ein Graus. Mag ein spezieller Fall gewesen sein, aber sei's drum.

Egal. Nun ist wieder alles so wie ich es gern habe. Nur noch schnell den #Server per #NFS ins Boot holen und ein paar hilfreiche Links setzen.

Dann ist auch der 16 Jahre alte #Travelmate #7740G wieder ein vollwertiges Mitglied meiner Rechnerfamilie. 🤓

Not the installation process.
Not finding a distro.
Not getting programs to work.
Not troubleshooting.
Not hardware compatibility.

The most common complaint about Linux I've seen is this:
For a normal computer user, asking for help is just about impossible.

They ask a simple question and:
People respond "Did you Google it?"
People complain that the question wasn't asked "correctly".
People respond "RTFM"
People get mad??? at them for making an easy mistake.

We can't expect normal people to know to, or even know how to deal with any of that stuff.

Search engines these days are awful, manuals are hard to read for most people (especially stuff like ArchWiki), and normal people make mistakes we think are easily avoidable.

The solution to making Linux more popular is not ruthless promotion. The solution is to actually help the people who are trying to use it.

Ich benutze seit 30 Jahren #Linux, und komme mir immer noch wie ein Anfänger vor.
Ich bereite gerade eine Vorlage für ein Nutzerverzeichnis vor, damit die Nutzer beim ersten Anmelden möglichst wenig Stress haben. Die vorbereiteten Dateien kopiere ich dann beim Systemstart in die jeweiligen Nutzerverzeichnisse.
Der default-browser wird in .config/mimeapps.list gespeichert . Diese Datei ist in meiner Vorlage nicht vorhanden - warum ist bei user1 der Default-Browser firefox, bei user2 konqueror???

Is' alles nich fix aber Ich glaube, ich hab' hier n Konzept gefunden was maby cool werden könnte.

Wie man die letzten Tage evntl. gelesen hat, überlege ich schon eine Weile, ob ich mich nicht privat wieder mehr "kreativ" rumfuzzeln möchte - gescheitert isses meist daran das es keine Basis gab worauf ich das kreative mit meinem aktuellen Skillset anwenden soll.
Mit dem aktiven #DiDay @aalen ließe sich aogar was machen, da dass Re:Design eig. schon vor der #FAT26 in meinem Kanban rumrennt....

Angelehnt vom @schenklradio, was soweit ich weiß gefühlt alles über #OpenSource macht, wäre meine Idee, dass ich die Vorarbeiten/Präsi vorbereitung etc. u.a. auf meinem Twitch-Channel mache unter meiner eig. #Linux Workspace.

I wonder if back in the early days of #Unix-like OSs, there was opposition to the concept of a package manager.

I can hear the debates echoing in my head already:

• "Package management makes users lazy and less likely to check and audit what they're actually installing. Especially if you end up automatically resolving dependencies and blindly applying updates!"
• "One program should never have that much power over a system. What if the project is taken over? Searching for, downloading, installing and updating software should be the jobs of different, smaller programs according to the Unix philosophy."
• "Distributions should offer their users the choice of multiple package managers, or otherwise we're giving too much power to the maintainer(s) of a single program."
• "Centralised repositories are a terrible idea as they are a single point of failure and it encourages users to blindly trust their authority."
• "All of this nonsense about making computing 'user-friendly' is just going to bring tons of undesirables normies in."

Ok, I think I've got this display card under control - or so it seems. It hasn't crashed since Wednesday.

I guess this is a combo AMD RDNA3 Navi23 and KDE Plasma (+ Wayland?) bug...

I backed out all my Linux kernel command line switches for AMD GPUs and it crashed to green screen in less than a half hour. So, re-adding them stopped that from happening.

... amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x410 amdgpu.tmz=0 amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1 amdgpu.sg_display=0 ...

And then the cursor thing is fixed <?!> by adding

KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1

Currently this is what is set:

From a user experience point of view I don't see any difference with that software cursor setting.

There's another wrinkle to this that might be a factor but I can't really test around it currently. This is a multi-head machine and one screen is connected via HDMI and one is DP.

Perhaps this wouldn't be a problem if both screens were connected via the same type of connector.

Both screens are set to the same refresh frequency. But, in the display control app one reads back at 60.00 Hz while the other is 60.000 Hz. Minor thing right? But in trying to make this work I've seen references to AMD GPU weirdness in multi-head configurations where the refresh rates were different between screens. Red herring perhaps.

Anyway, don't know if there are (or will be) any people trying to make a RX 5800 XT GPU behave under Linux but this seems to be what worked for me and my dual head setup. I'll update if anything changes.

Ganz #neuhier bin ich nicht. Meine ersten Schritte unternahm ich vor langer Zeit bei Diaspora. Im letzten Jahr gab es einen kurzen Abstecher nach Friendica und seit März 2026 bin ich mit Sharkey auf procial.tchncs.de unterwegs. Seit ein paar Tagen habe ich einen eigenen Hub auf Uberspace installiert und in Betrieb genommen. Langsam aber sicher kann ich dem Konzept und der Komplexität von Hubzilla folgen. Es ist eben nicht nur ein Account im Fediverse, sondern ein federiertes CMS. Zugegeben, ich habe eine natürliche Abneigung gegen eierlegende Wollmilchsäue, aber hier mache ich gerne eine Ausnahme. Meine technischen Interessen liegen bei Linux, FreeBSD, GhostBSD und dem Fediverse. Ich verbringe viel Zeit im Garten und in der Natur. Das alles als linksgrünversiffter, antifaschistischer Demokrat.
