Recently, there has been a lot of uproar within the KDE Community and within KDE Projects. @be4foss has already declared that a policy which allows for AI use within KDE is incompatible with KDE Eco goals and values.

Obscura VPN now has a Linux desktop app – no more wrangling WireGuard config files.

VPNs aren’t exactly in short supply, but Obscura does do things differently to most: it routes your traffic through two providers. Obscura handles the entry node; Mullvad the exit. Neither can assemble a full picture.

And it’s now GPLv3-licensed, which is a nice bonus.

Has anyone had success improving microphone sound quality, background noise reduction in particular, on #Linux?

I've tried Easy Effects (input) profiles, Noise Torch, HushMic, using my mobile phone with AndroidMic… every time, my colleagues just end up telling me the sound is terrible.

It feels stupid that a laptop with 32GB of RAM and a powerful processor wouldn't be able to apply the same sort of DSP on mic input than a headset with a relatively low-powered chipset in it.

ok, fixed the large table issue! :)

cell reuse was only part of the problem... the main thing was that SQLite LIKE returns case insensitive matches! comparing on lowercase and then applying the highlight fixed it completely.

index column width is stable now too and moved the search entry back to the header bar.

Dort ist ein Bilde einer fast leeren Pralinenschachtel zu sehen sowie nachfolgender Text zu lesen: "Schnapspralinen haben literarisch schon einmal Karriere gemacht: als bevorzugte Energiequelle eines anarchischen Kängu- rus in Werken von Marc-Uwe Kling. Vor dem Amtsgericht Frankfurt am Main aber ging es weniger um Kleinkunst als um Blutalkohol. Ein Autofahrer war nachts in Hofheim mit 1,32 Promille kontrolliert worden. Getrunken habe er nichts, beteuerte er. Schuld seien vielmehr Pralinen, tisch- tennisballgroß und alkoholisch offenbar von erheblichem Ehrgeiz. Der Körper, so die Verteidigung im Kern, habe sich nicht an einer Bar, sondern an der Confiserie berauscht. Das Gericht blieb unbeeindruckt: Für den gemessenen Wert wären etwa 0,2 bis 0,3 Liter Hochprozentiges nötig gewesen. Umgerechnet in die vertraute Maßeinheit des deutschen Schnapspralinenwesens, entspricht das mindestens 132 Pralinen der Marke Mon Chéri. Das ist kein Dessert mehr, sondern ein Ernährungskonzept. Am Ende stand ein Urteil wegen vorsätzlicher Trunkenheit im Verkehr. Das angebliche Missverständnis in der Patisserie ließen die Richter nicht gelten. Die Fahrerlaubnis war fort, die Pointe blieb: Wer Alkohol als Praline tarnt, sollte nicht erwarten, dass das Strafrecht ihn als Naschkatze behandelt."

I'm considering getting an LTO-8 setup for backup. My home fileserver has about 40-50TB in it, and even with a "never restore" assumption the break even time vs "store everything in glacier deep archive" is pretty reasonable. Anyone gone this route and have opinions?

Is anyone running old #Focusrite #Firewire audio interfaces on #Linux with #Pipewire or old-time #Jack?

Since these interfaces don't work with modern #Windows or #macOS computers, they are now sometimes ridiculously cheap on Ebay.

Like the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24… I could do with multiple audio outputs in a mobile setup. Running stable at 128 samples buffer size would be a requierement, however.

🧵 So I got this #Focusrite #Saffire Pro24 for 18,50€, used from Ebay. It's a #Firewire #AudioInterface.

I don't have much time now but here's a first quick test… I plugged it into the crazy Apple adapter chain from Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3, and plugged the latter into my good old Lenovo t470.

The interface gets bus-powered instantly, and #Pipewire can be set to Pro Audio mode… good^Wcumbersome old #ffadoMixer allows to set all options and internal monitor mix when run as root (I should solved this).

So sad that #Linux will also lose Firewire support at some point. This devices feels like a quality device. It even has a power switch.

For high-end situations, I have an #RME #Fireface 400 still, but this is about getting 6 analog, balanced outputs that aren't shitty for cheap. And if further testing should show this works reliably, it's really an inexpensive solution (if you have the firewire adapters or a Firewire interface card already).

A lot of folks on the Fediverse, rather than change the computer, would change the operating system on the computer to give a new & improved user experience, e.g. install some flavour of #Linux on it.

If that seems a little daunting, it has got easier over the years & in many places there are people or groups who'll help you with it in person.

I don't know if this might have been the issue but many a #Linux installation has been foiled by Windows Fast Startup, whereby Windows makes itself "start" quickly by not actually shutting itself down completely.
Windows not shutting itself down completely means it doesn't release its hold on the hardware completely, thus messing up any other OS's attempt to use it.
Fast Startup needs to be turned off before installing any other OS.

I never wanted to be indirectly dependent on Google by using a "freed" #Android release.

Last week I successfully talked Linus into merging fixes for three unrelated #Linux #kernel regressions which annoyed multiple people[1].

There are clearly many reasons why people are switching to Vivaldi. Interestingly, my little survey shows that the top reasons have more to do with our values than particular features.

The #1 reason (77%) is the fact that we do not have built in AI. #2 is that we do not build profiles on our users (67%). #3 is that we are made in Europe. #4 and #5 is that we do not build in Crypto currencies and the built in ad and tracker blocker.

We will continue to listen to our users. We have chosen a different path to our competitors and we continue to try to do the right thing.
