I have just migrated the family to @deltachat (from signal for some of
them). Are you aware of a small howto / flyer to share #deltachat with
teens? My wish is for #2 to encourage her friends to use it instead of
WhatsApp (of course) or even Olvid.

Beyond encryption, the way of adding contacts sounds a nice avantage to
me, reducing the risk of being connected with unwanted peoples (not
impossible but harder).

Je suis impressionné par les apps collaboratives que tu peux installer et par l’aspect décentralisé totalement transparent (brefk comme du mail).

Deux difficultés:

1) Sauvegarder régulièrement son compte pour cas de téléphone perdu

2) Convaincre celleux pour qui SIgnal était déjà difficile d’installer un enième chat ;-)

I've used DeltaChat for about 7 years. I even managed to get a few family and friends to install it for a while, so we the built-in AutoCrypt would encrypt our emails. But none of them stuck with it.

Until recently DC continued to be a great mobile app for my personal email account. However, the devs are slowly moving away from supporting my use case, in favour of DC being a client for dedicated ChatMail servers. Which leaves me scratching my head as to its utility.

@ploum @signalapp @delta @arcanechat In my experience, many users miss WhatsApp's status feature and link previews in #arcanechat respectively #deltachat. Personally, I miss the chat export function—though Telegram's version is better than WhatsApp's.

From an end-user perspective, without consideration for security or network effect, which Whatsapp features are missing from:

Habe mich da aber etwas abhängen lassen, was die Entwicklung hin zu Relays & Co. angeht. Aktuell ist hier noch 1.58.4 installiert (#DeltaChat auf #Android).

Nun hat @delta@chaos.social gestern einen Hinweis auf einen Artikel von https://digitalcourage.social/@digitalcourage gepostet. Der klärt etwas mehr, als ich aus der offiziellen FAQ entnehmen konnte.

➡️ Ein Kontakt mit normalen E-Mail-Adressen ist nicht mehr vorgesehen, wenn ich das richtig sehe. Korrekt?

➡️ Ob ich ein (öffentliches) Relay einsetze oder eine für #DeltaChat separat eingerichtete IMAP-Box, macht keinen Unterschied. Auch korrekt?

➡️ Wenn Relays Daten nur zwischenspeichern, wird alles auf dem Endgerät gespeichert, korrekt? Also ist eigene Datensicherung angesagt. Synchronisieren sich mehrere Endgeräte vollständig?

➡️ Wenn eine E-Mail-Adresse nicht mehr als Identifikator fungiert, sondern ein OpenPGP-Fingerprint als Nutzerkennung, ist ein Hinzufügen und Kontaktieren von Leuten nur über einen Einladungslink (wahlweise als QR-Code) möglich. Korrekt?

➡️ Telefonie läuft nur zwischen zwei Teilnehmenden, korrekt? Läuft das direkt Peer-to-Peer zwischen den beiden Endgeräten? Ein Mail-Relay oder eine IMAP-Box dürfte bei Audio/Video-Telefonie nicht zum Einsatz kommen, richtig? Welches Verfahren wird technisch genutzt? Unter den Spezifikationen habe ich da nichts gesehen?

Digitalcourage has been doing digital rights work in Germany since 1987. They are the people behind the BigBrotherAwards. This is not a random blog post. They just updated their messenger guide.

For most people leaving WhatsApp, they still call Signal the best compromise. Then they say: if you want to go one step further, use Deltachat as well.

What they like about Deltachat is almost the same list I keep repeating.

No phone number.
No address book upload.
Decentralized relays.
End-to-end encryption on by default, including groups.
Free software.
You can get it from F-Droid.
You do not give any personal data to create an account.

They are honest about Signal too. It is easier to switch to. It is also one company, one pile of servers, on Amazon and Microsoft, under US law, and it still wants a phone number to register. In Germany that already bothers them. In Iran it is not a small detail.

Here a phone number is not just a contact. It is a SIM, an identity, something that can be cut. One centralized app is one switch. We have already watched WhatsApp, Telegram, and even the “safer” apps go dark or get squeezed. Moving from Telegram to Signal does not change that shape. It is still one door.

Deltachat is not magic. Digitalcourage themselves say it is still not widely used. That is the hard part, not the encryption. But the design matches how people here actually have to live: bad networks, sudden cuts, no trust in a single company, and a messenger you can keep when the usual ones disappear.

I have been saying we should stop treating Deltachat as only an emergency tool for blackouts. This guide is useful because a careful European digital-rights group reached the same technical conclusion from a quieter place. Everyday chat, not just the day the net dies.

Something changed on Linux Solus after the latest update of a lot of packages.
Now Delta.Chat won't start, it just shows an error message:
"Delta Chat had a problem - The window stopped responding and could not recover automatically. Reason: abnormal-exit (exit code 256)".

quite some other projects try to solve "offline communications" by using Bluetooth but I think this is very unpractical for anything that is not looking like an IRC or SMS app

but if people setup local interconnected wifi hotspots and build a mesh network in the cities/towns then you can have a something much more interesting while not draining everyone's battery

enabling people to do things like this and becoming truly resilient and autonomous

things like this you can never do with centralized messengers like #WhatsApp, #Telegram, #Signal, etc. if you really care about digital independence, centralized alternatives are just NOT an option at all

A really interesting and practical project from the #Guardian Project called #ButterBox is worth knowing about.

ButterBox is a portable, fully offline device (usually running on a Raspberry Pi). When you turn it on, it creates its own local Wi-Fi network. Anyone nearby can connect and access a set of tools without any internet connection:

• An offline app store (based on F-Droid)
• File, video, book and educational content sharing
• And most importantly — secure encrypted chat

What makes this project especially powerful is its deep integration with #deltachat The ButterBox team uses the MadMail server to run a local Chatmail Relay inside the box.

Users can create an offline account with just a single QR scan or one tap and immediately start using fully end-to-end encrypted messaging. Even when there’s no internet at all, messages, groups and files can be exchanged securely between people.

This is where DeltaChat really shines: decentralized, no central servers, real encryption, and designed for difficult conditions.
Combined with ButterBox, it becomes a genuine tool for secure communication during internet shutdowns, in remote areas, or in crisis situations.

It’s a pity that this project still isn’t widely known or deployed in Iran. The good news is that it’s completely open source and can be set up with a regular Raspberry Pi and an SD card. Pre-built images are also available, which makes the process even easier.

For anyone interested in privacy, offline communication, and tools that keep working when the internet goes down, ButterBox is one of the most valuable projects around right now.

on lance l'application on dit qu'on a pas de compte et paf on a un compte... pas de mot de passe, pas d'identifiant unique, pas de validation par sms, par mail, par captcha... (effet wahou)
on demande quand même un nom/pseudo à présenter aux gens...

bon le souci, c'est que je n'ai personne à qui parler... du coup je demande à ma femme si elle veut bien tester (l'appli est à un un click dans fdroid ou google play).
elle le fait, scan mon qr code et hop on chat...
on note que c'est plus rapide en wifi qu'en 5g mais c'est rapide dans les 2 cas.
j'essaye d'installer une application dans notre conversation (un jeu, je ne sais plus lequel...), je n'y arrive pas, elle teste de son côté et installe #betterlist

Mais elle est super cette app! rien que pour ça arcanechat va rester installé sur nos téléphones !!
(et peut-être remplacer whatsapp ?)

Parla 0.7.6 with experimental webxdc support! it's not enabled by default because i didn't really evaluate how secure it is, but it's using gtkwebkit on gnome and wkwebkit on macos. (no windows support yet)

When built from source it's not enabled by default and it's an optional feature. If you are a distro maintainer please take that into account.

I'm looking for feedback and testing, i'll do some security assessments before enabling that feature by default. Be careful.

had a chat recently on the topic of #building for yourself vs building for the #opensource #foss #community

#software to me is simply a tool to solve a problem. mostly my own problems. like many, problem-sets are often unique and don't have a one-size-fits-all.

one project in particular was me taking what i learned from running #deltachat relays and contributing upstream and making a very niche lean single-binary relay that's compatible with upstream. why? because i wanted to and i felt upstream was too many moving parts and decisions that don't align with what i want to be working on.

as soon as i released the binary to a few trusted testers the feedback was, "this is great, but upstream does this, or you should make it more scale-proof (noting that 70rps was too slow) for the community"

not one to be reactive, i thought about it for a few days. then decide no, i'm not changing anything. i built this for fun and learning, not for a community.

once i release this, the community is free to do with it whatever they like. fork it, light it on fire, crochet jorts, whatevs.

maybe this would have been a good paule f*ck you pay me situation. i donno anymore.

Question for the Fediverse: is #DeltaChat just a front end to PGP-encrypted e-mail, or is there more to it than that?

I just had a cool #deltachat moment:

One of my chatmail relays went down. I messaged the admin without thinking about it. Because we both had a few backup relays configured, we were able to chat seamlessly about it over the same accounts we always use.

That is a smooth user experience. Well done, @delta!

The #DeltaChat server that I was using seems to have stopped working for receiving messages, which sucks 😞 but such is the nature of decentralisation 🤷

It's really easy just to start a new account on a new server - so that's not really a problem - but I'm lucky that I only have one contact that message on the app because "re-adding" people isn't super straight forward. 🤔

La mini app Better List ( #DeltaChat ) à retenu mon attention. Contrairement à Traero, si on l'ajoute à l'écran d'accueil du téléphone, on peut donner un nom différent à chaque liste (je me fais une page de listes sur l'accueil du tél). #DeltaChat utilisé avec l'appli ToDo List, pour la liste de courses partagée, c'est sympa, mais pas super efficace. Souvent ça met du temps en à charger.
Bon, c'est pas la but de DeltaChat, alors tant pis. Mais conséquence : j'ai toujours pas réussi à trouver aussi bien que google keep pour les listes de courses partagées avec ma compagne. C'est relou. (Surtout de confier sa liste de besoins à google, alors qu'on a pu virer google de presque toute notre vie numérique).

Maybe @yifei could update us about the status of #DeltaChat in #Debian? I can see that it's on salsa [1], and I see a wishlist item for the #DeltaTouch client [2], including a comment about #LibDeltaChat being prepared for Debian. Debianisation will be one step in making DeltaChat more mainstream.

After I was arrested, I decided to change the way we promote and introduce DeltaChat. Until then, we had always presented DeltaChat merely as a communication channel for when the internet goes down in Iran, and people used it exactly for that reason.

But now that DeltaChat has drawn so much attention in Iran, and even someone like me has been arrested for promoting it, I think it's much wiser to shift our content strategy. Instead of portraying DeltaChat only as a way out during internet blackouts, it's better to introduce it as a practical, everyday tool.

Honestly, getting back into this kind of work is very difficult for me. But still, I genuinely believe it can be very helpful and I feel I have to do it.
My goal is for ordinary people in Iran to use DeltaChat for its actual features and built-in tools, not just as an emergency app. Ultimately, I want DeltaChat to become a mainstream, everyday messenger here in our own Iran at least here and maybe, just maybe, even help people in other places too. But well, that's exactly the big challenge.

this prototype is incredibly awesome and working way too good already!

there was some #Tauri version of Delta Chat desktop but that still was just about displaying the UI in the browser, you still depend on a local program and local #chatmail core in your machine

with this the whole thing is running on the client side in your browser tab! the chatmail core is compiled into #wasm

still since you can't connect to IMAP and SMTP from javascript, a proxy is needed to get this prototype working but JUST IMAGINE if chatmail relays would support/allow clients to connect via websocket or http!

#signal leaked my phone number, despite being set to hidden. this enabled cops to deanonymize and geolocate me by capturing the phone of someone who i never gave my phone number. great job for this app that is advertised to activist and journalists as "secure" and "private".

i think #deltachat has made more sensible decisions here by allowing multiple identities abs not demanding any private information, and also being decentralized instead of hosting it all on #amazon web services like #signal does.

It will be automatically updated, as there should not be much conflicts between releases. I expect to discontinue this fork once (if) the support is merged

@adbenitez @silverpill having multi-relay like #deltachat or #nostr would be great. im not sure if this will ever happen. much less nomadic identity. one of the guys in our research group broke it down as to why it won't work (mostly mastodon)

visibility is a problem at times. some relays block or don't federate based on size, who you proxy through, etc. relays help but they don't solve the portable identity issue.

nostr is interesting. the tech/spec is light and pretty great. i think its like anything else, what you make of it. you can curate your network based on relays and interests. we should try some experiment soon

reflecting a lot on #fediverse lately. instance hopping is such an event and sometimes disruptive. ive spent a lot of time running #chatmail relays and until recently contributing to upstream. we can relay hop and its almost silent. your cryptographic identity is owned by you, not the relay operator. giving you a feeling or being nomadic. servers go down, operators retire or fade out. but you keep your identity.

this works great for #deltachat and enjoy the flexibility. but #activitypub doesn't have an agreed upon implementation. @silverpill is doing great work with his research and #mitra ecosystem. my hopes are eventually we'll see this on fedi across the ecosystems.

I got a question for #deltachat users: since it is fully anonymous and doesn't relies on nor exposes phone numbers or any other personal data, there is no way to ensure someone is the person they pretend to be unless you've personally invited them (or was added through a contact in common).

So do you recommend publicly sharing or exposing you connect link/qr code?

I feel like it's a strength of Deltachat but also a potential drawback as it slows down connecting with people, what do you think?

@novarivera @bjornsdottirs our first pinned post here goes to a detailed description of (no) metadata in messages, including openpgp handling. The way #chatmail and #deltachat works and handles encryption and metadata-minimization is quite different from how email clients of the last ten years did it.

As to editing one's own messages, we didn't hear many complaints although in theory it could be problematic. Mostly it's used for typo-fixing and fixing some grammatical nonsense, or some inline web-link. #deltachat is meant for usage with somewhat trusted people, not unknown people who try to trick you.

N'empêche si on fait une simple comparaison entre #Matrix / #Element et #deltachat, je préfère largement deltachat. Pas de délai de synchronisation des messages à cause de serveur trop lourd et gourmand en ressources, et une expérience utilisateur qui reste raisonnable.

Calendrier partagé, édition de texte collaborative, sondages/votes/planification de dates, checklists, comptes à rebour, HyperCard, dessin, suivi du temps (timetracking), tableur, mini-blog/journal (exportable en html/pdf), suivi de tâches, liste de dépenses en commun, liste de souhaits...
Et le tout, sans sortir de l'application, et chiffré de bout en bout pour les participants. 👌

Not about #DeltaChat, which not anymore what used to be.

Delta Chat is even better than it used to be 🙄 now it even has multi-path / multi-relay support and pain-free migration of servers/addresses without even needing to create new profiles and tell everyone you changed address/server, meaning it is more resilient and powerful than most decentralized solutions out there, including the one you mention, matrix, which heavily makes you dependent in your home-server, same and worse goes for xmpp, you are pretty bound to your chosen server and in the case of XMPP if the server where you created a group goes down, your groups is gone

this just doesn't happen in Delta Chat since groups are really decentralized and totally independent of any server, meaning they are also unblockable

but besides that, Matrix and XMPP are less user-friendly and more problematic in multi-device setup, while in Delta Chat this is pain-free

also in Delta Chat now it is impossible to end up with encryption disabled in the chat, encryption is permanent, for ALL chat content and group metadata, in matrix and XMPP this is not the case, in XMPP it is super easy to end up with encryption disabled, disabling encryption is like 3 taps away on a chat 🤦‍♂️ in matrix reactions are not encrypted etc.

Ok. So you are 100% right about Signal. Not about #DeltaChat, which not anymore what used to be.

Since you love selfhosting, I suggest you either Matrix (not the whole thing, just selfhost "conduit", a light matrix server) it's light and easy to install.

Or, maybe, even a SMPP server may do for you, like Prosody. Light and simple.

Just my two cents, of course.

I could easily create an account without sharing any details. Connect with a friend's Android based phone & an iPhone. We could videocall & send small apps like a game or a shared list.

Apparently I can host my own chat relay & don't need to use someone else's infrastructure, but I haven't tested that yet.

It's hard these days to find a unifying description, or know about all the people and communities involved in #deltachat #chatmail #webxdc developments. One shared sentiment probably is wanting to develop anti-authoritarian technologies and cultures around it, and being opposed to authoritarian tech policy moves in the West, chat control, age verification, prescribing Google/Apple control, enforcing digital app use etc

1) It's all based on IETF standards, with configuration and custom integration code fully FOSS and documented at: https://chatmail.at/doc/relay/ with hundreds of permission-free deployments.

2) We know of several alternative relay implementations and deployments

3) Own servers or big email providers can be used (YMMV)

However it's fair to criticize our relentless focus on E2EE, and our moving away from email addresses as identity.

I got a new phone, and I tried out #Deltachat's "I already have a profile" -> "Add as a Second Device" feature (synced profile from old phone to new phone). It was as simple as scanning a QR code, and both phones were on the same wifi network (where they get many tens of MB/sec). Synced like blazing full powah!

I tried to do a similar migration to my new phone in #Signal. I must say #Deltachat had the superior experience. Deltachat was willing to sort of "straddle" two phones with one account (see parent toot).

But Signal? It does a transfer of messages to the new phone, then logs out of the old phone. Then my desktop needed to be "re-linked" to the new phone. This "linking" (done with a QR bar code) that Signal can do: it's phone -> Desktop, or phone-> iPad. But not old phone -> new phone (and then you get an ongoing synced "straddling" of one profile).

For a few months we ran a relay - a chatmail server - but it was on Debian, and I didn't want to make an official service that runs on Debian. Not because it doesn't work: it works perfectly. But because it wouldn't be in the spirit of this place.

Thanks to @feld 's excellent cookbook recipe, I also kept a private relay of my own running for months, just to test it. It held up beautifully. So yesterday, with the help of some friends in the cookbook chat, I migrated the Debian server to FreeBSD - accounts and data included - and I can finally call it a stable, official Cafe service.

Our chatmail relay - https://chatmail.bsd.cafe - runs on FreeBSD, in a jail. Which means it gets everything the other services get: hourly backups via zfs send and receive, FreeBSD's security, and all the rest.

I'd encourage everyone to try Delta Chat. Secure, decentralized communication built on protocols we already know and trust: the ones behind email. And the development is moving fast. Multi-relay is no longer a promise - it's here, and it's solid: a single profile can use several relays at once, so your account and your reachability survive even if one of them goes down and disappears. we can't offer a full comparison but here are three key points:

1. Tox is not a cross-platform user offering like #deltachat, but more an infrastructure library like https://github.com/chatmail/core

2. Tox can only transfer messages between contacts who are online at the same time. complicates mobile usage.

3. Tox depends on a global distributed hash table (DHT) to find other contacts; doesn't work in highly restricted networks like during national internet shutdowns/larger failures etc.

Reminder: There are no accounts in the classic sense anywhere with #chatmail or #deltachat.

It's all private profiles on end user devices which co-ordinate in a #p2p fashion. Chat profiles *use* email (relay) addresses for transporting messages through a federated e2ee-restricted SMTP network.

A chat profile or chat group has zero data on the server. It's radically different from classic email servers, Whatsapp, Signal, XMPP and Matrix servers which host and control chat identity.

@delta The important point here is that #deltachat is a private messenger, not a public messenger and not a social network. Others fill that role already. Discoverability should stay in the hands of each individual user. That saied, it would be nice to have some kind of WoT so that one can announce his delta contact publicly and only people for whom a trust relationship can be established pass a pre-check for a contact request, so no spam should become possible.

While onboarding is extremely easy, the real challenge is to find initial contacts or circles to chat with. There is no discovery and no central registry. Every new chat profile is private and nobody knows about it other than your contacts. So we are curious. What is the current number of chats (1:1 or group chats or channels) you have with #deltachat apps? Not contacts but chats you have read or wrote something into, in the last months.

I don't know enough to contrast it with Signal but I keep finding reasons not to like the latter and for my threat model DeltaChat is probably more than enough.

Good news among the bad news!

If the recent #0day attacks against Linux kernel+servers were launched against #chatmail relays, privacy of chatting with #deltachat is preserved. Why? Because we already assume the server could be actively hostile, and still not read or see any avatar, names or messages.

Since the March 2.48 zero-metadata releases relays/servers do not see cryptographic identities, and get no chance to launch "machine-in-the-middle" (MITM) attacks.

Delta Chat can use several servers "relays" at the same time, do you remember that downtime with signal when #amazon or #cloudflare are down?? with Delta Chat if one of your relays go down you can keep chatting using the others (ex. people manage to use Delta Chat in Iran, Russia and China despite the strict network firewalls, if you go on vacations to China Signal will not work, Delta Chat will)

Signal doesn't support using the same account in multiple phones, and multi-device with desktop is weak and still depends on the phone, with delta chat you can have several devices at the same time and it is super easy to add a second device

No strangers can discover you and send you spam or fishing in Delta Chat same for your family members, so it is a safer space for family chat

#DeltaChat has offline-first in-chat mini-apps like games, collaborative text pads, checklist, shopping lists and other tools (all end-to-end encrypted without any 3rd party service hosting such apps, they live in the chat and only chat members can access them)

in Delta Chat you can save messages in a "Saved Messages" chat, #signal also has "Note to Self" but what is superior in Delta Chat is that you can also jump from the saved/bookmarked message to the original message and see it in its chat context, in Signal it just forwards a copy of the message to the "Note to Self" chat
