Pretty much just put the task bar at the top, change the window control buttons to the left instead of right and install a dock on the bottom.

Doesn't take long and I have had good results with that.

I was an Ubuntu fanboy for nearly 15 years, so most of my Linux experience has been with GTK based programs and desktop environments (typing this from a Cinnamon desktop now, as it is the DE on my laptop along with the i3 window manager).

Possible big step: Yesterday I installed Artix Linux with the latest KDE Plasma desktop environment on a computer for family room use (mostly videos and music).

My children have been using Krita for art and Kdenlive for video editing for years.

Successfully migrated the login to my Forgejo Git-Forge from an outdated installation of Authentik to a containerized Keycloak 26 with Passkey (WebAuthN) authentication 🥳

Getting the users from my FreeIPA LDAP via a secured Wireguard tunnel that only allows port 636 to the IPA replica server in my DMZ.

Works like a charm. Once the handful of users on my instance have linked their new Keycloak identity with their Forgejo account, I can disable the old OIDC with Authentik 🙂

I run 21 OCI containers with Podman (and Quadlets!) on my ARM aarch64 server on Netcup with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 10.1. Memory utilization is a bit high, but the system is working absolutely stable for months.

TLS certificates and ingress-routing is handled fully automatically by Traefik and labels, attached to the containers.

Having everything containerized, makes it really easy to clean up 🙂 There's some applications, that I don't even use anymore. Time to clean up.

Then I'll continue, replacing the old Authentik installation with Keycloak for my OIDC applications (Forgejo, Wallos etc.)

Ok! Initial build script for writerdeckOS v2.0 is done.

I even coded a menu to allow for easy change of default word processor / text editor.

The Terminal Edition defaults to using wordgrinder, but the follow word processors and text editors are loaded into the system and its easy to swap over to them:

- WordGrinder
- Tilde
- Word Perfect
- Joe
- Emacs
- Vi / Vim
- Nano
- Micro

And it's easy to install and run a custom app (text editor or otherwise!).

Also, I added nmtui - a Terminal User Interface for Network Manager to connect to the internet if needed (eg to install a new app or to configure synced cloud folders).

I need to run a couple more QA tests for this and then I'll start putting together the installation media. After testing that on a couple of laptops, I'll push it out officially!

Linux-Nutzer in der Webstatistik

Bei Caschy ist die aktuelle Betriebssystem-Statistik erschienen und dass Linux eine Verbreitung von knapp über 3% in der Desktop-Nutzung besitzt. Die Server-Nutzung lassen wir hier aus der Diskussion mal raus.

Mal abgesehen davon, dass Webstatistiken von StatCounter so semi sind, beachtet ja kaum jemand, dass Linux-Nutzer oft deutlich mehr Wert auf Privatsphäre legen und daher eine überdurchschnittlich hohe Anzahl der User die Web-Trackings blockiert und somit nicht in die Statistik zählt.

Die Zahl der Blockierer ist auf anderen Betriebssystemen mangels Interesse und Möglichkeiten deutlich geringer und deshalb werden sie viel häufiger gezählt. Eine Messung mittels der User-Agents auf Abruf-Ebene wäre unter Umständen genauer, weil deutlich weniger Endnutzer ihre User-Agent-Kennung ändern.

Collabora is weighing in and issuing comments against both OnlyOffice and Euro-Office while, itself, forking Collabora Office Desktop from the Document Foundation's LibreOffice. Document Foundation has now resumed LibreOffice Online which competes against Euro-Office and OnlyOffice.

Document software may appear boring on its face, but Microsoft Office is a big reason why folks still stay with Microsoft OS and don't (can't...) move to Linux. MS Office 365 is often used as a bridge to allow folks to move to Linux while still using Microsoft products in the browser but that solution still keeps them tied to closed source solutions.

Development of Free and Open Sourced Software (FOSS) office products, both desktop apps and online web apps, is a core and key element to allowing FOSS solutions to thrive - both for individuals and organizations.

This level of drama and fighting is indicative of a lot of effort and attention being thrown into this arena. I'm confident over time it'll settle and different projects will merge back together or at the very least borrow and build upon each's efforts.

@serigala_tropis Look, the problem with #gentoo is that the OS expects an unusual (however sensible) amount of RTFM, which even most #Linux "influencers" these days clearly cannot be bothered with. I don't mind in most ways, but it's hard to take anything seriously when it starts with a wrong assertion about e.g. compilation.

Something magical is happening.

Nobody *wants* to use Windows anymore. Folks rush out to buy Apple and nerds favour Linux, but Windows is increasingly just something forced on users by corporate IT.

Proton/Wine getting more and more mature is eating away at one of the few remaining things that kept non-corporate users in the Windows ecosystem.

Still proportionally small numbers, but I think this trend is likely irreversible now.

I really don't get this interaction between "sync" and "rsync". Tried it a few more times and it doesn't happen always but sometimes the "sync" gets stuck until rsync is finished completely. Even if it has yet to touch e.g. 3TB of data.

Neuer Laptop ist heute angekommen. Habe mich für einen Dell Pro Max 14 MC14250 entschieden. Ein paar Eckdaten:

* Intel Core Ultra 7 265H (16 Core)
* 32 GB RAM
* 1 TB SSD

Es waren auch noch einige andere Modelle von Dell, Lenovo (ThinkPad) und Framework in der Auswahl, aber der hier hat die beste theoretische Performance im Verhältnis zum Preis geboten. Allem voran wegen der CPU.

Ein anderer wichtiger Punkt: Offizieller (!) Linux Support mit Ubuntu ab Werk. Aber was mit Ubuntu läuft, läuft noch viel besser mit Fedora 😉...

Ich nenne unbuntu ja gern „windohs für linux“, aber das canonical mir mal so recht geben würde…

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS erhält systemweiten KI-Assistenten

…hätte ich dann doch nicht erwartet.

Ab sofort stehe ich auch bei problemen mit unbuntu nicht mehr zur verfügung, so wie ich mich schon seit über zehn jahren selbst für viel und unter rausgedrückten tränen hingehaltenes geld am angelhaken nicht mehr um windohs-probleme kümmere. Fragt einfach eure künstliche intellidingsda! Oder nehmt einfach eine distribuzjon, die ohne so eine gnobbelmatsch-scheiße auskommt und sich definiert, dokumentert und prinzipjell nachvollziehbar verhält, wenn man ihr etwas an der kommandozeile sagt! Oder eben nicht, aber dann ist es ein fehler in der softwäjhr, den man den entwicklern unter die nase reiben kann. Falls die entwickler überhaupt noch fehlerberichte lesen, denn diese werden zurzeit so mit gnobbelmatsch-meldungen aus der hirngruft geflutet, dass niemand mehr nachkommt und deshalb sogar ganze projekte gefährdet sind. Nein, ich gehe nicht mit horrorskop, pendel und wünschelrute an einen kompjuter, der von canonicals wirrseligen beglückungsideen unbrauchbar gemacht wurde, um das problem doch noch zu identifizieren und zu fixen.

Das kann übrigens auch passieren, wenn man nix an der kommandozeile macht, sondern es geschafft hat, seine installazjon auf anderem weg zu zerschießen:

Besonders tief greift der Dienst in den Bootprozess ein: Schlägt ein Systemstart fehl, aktiviert systemd über das Paket ai-repair.service automatisch das neue Ziel ai.target, das eine Diagnose durchführt und dem Nutzer beim nächsten Log-in eine Maßnahmenliste präsentiert, um fehlgeschlagene Bootvorgänge künftig zu verhindern

Systemd und gnobbelmatsch: da wäxt zusammen, was zusammen gehört: das mies dokumentierte und überkomplexe mit dem inhärent unverständlichen und nicht mehr analyiserbaren monströsen parameterfeldern angelernter neuronaler netzwerke! Herr! Himmel! Hirn! Oh scheiße, die haben regenschirme… 😱️

Wobei: der systemd funkzjoniert wenigstens im alltag.

Die frage, ob da demnächst beim hochfahren des rechners vielleicht 512.000 zeilen javascript-kwelltext aus 1.900 dateien ausgeführt werden, die kann ich auch nicht beantworten. 😑️

Aber dafür weiß ich eines ganz genau: wenn der ganze scheißheip vorbei ist, werden viele ältere, razjonal denkende und leidlich vollständig erwaxen gewordene menschen, die noch wissen, wie man softwäjhr macht, den ganzen gnobbelmatschscheiß zurückbauen und dabei vermutlich vieles neu programmieren müssen, damit ein zentraler baustein unserer technischen zivilisazjon wieder weitgehend zuverlässig, gut analysierbar, nachvollziehbar dokumentiert und reproduzierbar funkzjoniert. Diese leute werden dabei nicht nur durch scheiße waten und auch nicht in der scheiße schwimmen, sondern sie werden scheiße fressen. Guten appetit! Ich bin schon satt. 🤮️

Ich habe ja gehofft, dass sich diese selbstzerstörung auf meikrosoft windohs und äppels mäckOS beschränkt.

Toll, dieses unbuntu! Das ist ein bisschen wie der feierfox, wo diese form der anwenderverachtung und der heimlich reingedrückten vergewohltätigungen seit über zehn jahren läuft. Wenn man es sich neu installiert hat und damit wie gewohnt das machen wlll, was man mit einem kompjuter eben so machen will, dann muss man erstmal immer mehr zeug deaktivieren und sollte ja nix vergessen: die ganze dysfunkzjonale snäpp-krüppelscheiße, die künstliche intellidingsda… und dann noch rasch ein paar „normale“ paketkwellen hinzufügen, so für softwäjhr, die canonical nur noch als langsamen, speicherfressenden und fehlerhaften snäpp ausliefern will, zum beispiel den thunderbird, den feierfox oder den vim… ähm: gibt es eigentlich noch diese standardmäßig mitinstallierte amazon-reklamelinse für den tollen „benutzerfreundlichen“ desktop mit the web at your fingertips?

Just cut the CI/CD build time for my blog (blog.hofstede.it) by over 100%!

I use Pelican as a static site generator and deploy via Forgejo Actions. Instead of running apt install for Python dependencies on every single run, I finally built a custom container image.

The best part? Forgejo has a built-in OCI registry! I just pushed my custom image to my git-forge and referenced it in the workflow. Down to a 24s deploy time! Nice.

I have a lot of sympathy for people that are trying to build and support a Linux or BSD distribution and trying to stay clear of projects that accept LLM code.

There is so much that makes up a distro it's inevitable that some downstream package is likely to end up being affected by LLMs.

Big game of whack-a-mole at the moment.

Patience and no rushing to judgements is required I guess. At least, as far as projects that do not have an explicit yes/no policy with respect to LLMs anyway.

Hätt ich doch bloß nicht die Einstellungen geändert. Ich habe beim Hauptrechner (Manjaro) XCFE zusätzlich zu KDE draufgeladen und in den Einstellungen gesagt, dass automatisch mit XCFE gestartet werden soll.

Nun kommt der Rechner aber nicht mehr zum Laufen,sondern hängt sich nach dem Startbildschirm auf.

Wie gut, dass ich gestern den alten Laptop mit Linux Mint XCFE eingerichtet habe und somit nicht ganz weg vom Fenster bin.

the second screenshot (right side) of microsofts stock price showing a big red downward trend over 6 months. the price is 356.77 and it says its down 31% percent which is a pretty big drop for the company bullish on AI but market failed to impress so far and investors are dumping stock as AI promise and increased usage of AI and Ads inside paid products causing more issues than doing anything else.

There is a subtle, almost sadistic pleasure in what I’m doing right now: I open boxes of brand-new ThinkCentre PCs, unpack them, hook them up to a monitor, keyboard, and network cable. I boot from USB and replace the preinstalled Windows 11 (never even started) with my Debian 13 golden image, using Clonezilla.

As of today, the setup is based on Debian 13, but I’m already working on a variant based on FreeBSD and jails.

Systemd wird von der amerikanischen Firma RedHat (seit 2018 Tochter von IBM) gepflegt. Hat sich die von RedHat finanzierte FOSS dem politischen Druck gebeugt? This article is quite interesting and I'm interested about the idea of #immutable #Linux, at least for end users. I found nothing official on the #debian wiki.
On Debian, I don't remember having often experienced myself upgrade problems, with more than 25 years using it. Not on stable at least. (because ofc I run #testing :)
I don't know much about Fedora but I had the idea that it was not *that* stable because of its bleeding-edge nature.
