To this day, the personal server that I use and depend on in my daily life runs a LAMP stack on from primarily secondhand hardware. No Kubernetes, Ansible, etc, etc. Just old school bash automations via cron, and it's been going for well over a decade now like that. I manually upgrade the Fedora version twice a year, which usually requires me running two commands. Most everything else is automated with plain old bash.

GEGL (Generic Graphics Library) is a data flow based image processing framework, providing floating point processing and non-destructive image processing capabilities to GNU Image Manipulation Program and other projects (imgflo, GNOME Photos, iconographer, …)

Keyboard shortcuts power in UI control

I've had consistent good keyboard experiences with keyboard shortcuts in both closed source and Open Source programs
The program suite by AutoDesk ACAD which I know from version 10.0, was run on a single tasking 286 CPU with a seperate 287 math coprocessor installed. That computer was in URC, the computer lab of my University in SR/SA.
In that period of multitasking dark ages on x86 not even the coprocessor could be integrated on the CPU die. Of course my Amiga multitasked all it's programs in the same period, but that's for another toot ;)
ACAD10 and others have a set of nice functions which I still know by heart, because I can make nice 3D images with them

                            Sequence

                            • o (ortho)
                            • s (snap)
                            • l (line) from point to point indicated by digitizer
                            • layer (define layers and colours for objects)
                            • a (arc from {end of} axis to nice random point)
                            • the object snap function is at work here
                            • create different arcs in different layers
                            • setvar
                            • SURFTAB1 (value as large as the math coprocessor can handle)
                            • SURFTAB2 (same as above)
                            • revsurf (revolution of surfaces) rotate the arcs around axis
                            • a gorgeous multilayered / multi coloured object is created
                            • the SURFTAB valuse will be important in the next step
                            • shade
                            • autoshade() creates a magnifique shaded object within a number of seconds to a minute

                            The 3D objects look gorgeous!

I can create them in seconds on simple hardware, and can play by making them for hours

                              GIMP v3.04

It was this early morning, when I tried to fire up GIMP, I noticed that I had forgotten to install this magnificent gfx tool kit.

I ran apt install gimp immediately

I've been using GIMP ever since it came out, decades ago (spawn 1995). Even though the UI was totally different from what I was used to, adaptation was fast and my fluency in use of GIMP increased fast. I like working in GIMP

The GIMP is 31 years old

                              Quote

In 1995, Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis began developing GIMP as a semester project at University of California, Berkeley for the eXperimental Computing Facility.[8] The software was originally named the General Image Manipulation Program

GIMP v0.54 was first released in 1996

Over the decades I've seen a lot of users emitting futile complaints about the GUI, the use of many windows / viewports, while I can easily transition from closed source software on client's machines, to the GIMP, just by switching the mindset regarding the UI. The logic behind UI decisions is easily traceable.

GIMP has so many functions, I know of nobody who knows how to use all of them.

You should learn what you need to do, get fluent into those tasks, and learn more when you need more. This mind set also works in VIM, which has a massive ammount of functions and commands to make not only your programming in different languages more pleasant, it also has subtle assist functions which makes your source entries even more enjoyable.

GIMP always gives me consistent performance and I can rely on the keyboard shortcuts without having to use the mouse to select functions brushes, et all.
GIMP is for me a must have in my photo correction work flow. I've never relied on closed source software for those tasks, GIMP always has similar functions, many working even more efficient with your computer's CPU / GPU resources.

                              For the Love of GIMP

next section moved to seperate toot

                              Note:
I've always known that Open Source programs can be trusted better than closed source equivalents, something you all know when it comes down to the big photo manupilation suite, which enshittifies everything for its paying users.

GIMP shall always have its users back

                              You can trust GIMP

Shipped out the first two rehabilitated Thinkpads this morning. These have SSD drives, upgraded RAM and are running Linux Mint instead of the usual bloatware/spyware. Light and lean. Yay for repairability. 🛠️

                                                          sudo apt install steam-installer

From the Reddit comment I found on this:

"steam-installer is a meta package (collection of packages) that includes a handful of recommended dependencies in an Ubuntu/Mint environment.

It includes the steam-installer script that is responsible for downloading the latest steam client on first execution and setup up the environment, steam-libs, steam-libs-i386, debconf, lsof, and zenity (a tool for displaying graphical dialog boxes from shell scripts), and any dependencies required for those packages (like steam-devices for example). It basically does everything needed and recommended for Steam to work except add the i386 architecture, which Mint already has enabled."

My first test of Steam, post-install, was to install Skyrim. It ran BEAUTIFULLY in high graphics mode.

$ grep -a -C 2000 "global_objects\.add" /dev/sda2 | tee recovered_data

Oui, c'est juste grep. La magie de Gnunux : pas besoin d'installer un logiciel de récupération de données complexe et chiant à utiliser, c'est juste une bête commande disponible partout.

Explications :

    grep, vous connaissez sans doute, ça va tout simplement chercher une chaîne de caractères dans un fichier, et vous la renvoyer avec plus ou moins de lignes de contexte ;
    -a est une option qui signifie qu'on veut traiter les fichiers binaires « comme si » c'était des fichiers textes : normalement la commande ne marche que sur du texte, mais si vous voulez chercher une chaîne de caractère dans les octets qui composent une image JPG, libre à vous ;
    -C 2000, « C » pour contexte : si la chaîne de caractères est trouvée, je veux que grep me renvoie les 2000 lignes qui « entourent » la ligne où la chaîne apparaît. Comme mon script faisait dans les 1000 lignes, j'ai tapé large. Vous pouvez aussi jouer avec -B (pour before) et -A (pour after) pour avoir un contexte non-symmétrique ;
    "global_objects\.add" : une chaîne de caractères dont je me rappelais qu'elle était présente dans le script en question. Si vous avez perdu un texte, essayez de vous rappeler d'un titre ou d'une séquence de mots spécifique. Pour ma part, je me souvenais qu'à un moment, je remplissais un set nommé global_objects ;

There are reports that it kinda works on my device, and it would be really awesome if it did, as I could then use my laptop as a daily driver again.

If not, then I get to pick a Linux distro to put on it, and then go from there. Once I've got a good, functional device, I can look to rebuilding my office PC with qubes and a small windows partition for games.

                                                                                                                      For now: Backups.

To do this, place a U+2060 WORD JOINER before the “s” in “toots”. Example: s.

If you're using or (i.e. or desktop), you can add the following line to ~/.XCompose to give yourself a keyboard shortcut:

                                                                                                                        <Multi_key> <w> <j> : "" U2060 # WORD JOINER

                                                                                                                                            - Nvidia vs AMD for GPUs

So that new major number does *not* mean that we have some big new exciting feature, or that we're somehow leaving old interfaces behind. It's the usual "solid progress" marker, nothing more.

With our normal release schedule of 5-6 releases per year and my antipathy to big version numbers, you should basically expect us to bump the major number roughly every 3.5 years.

And yeah, I don't have a solid plan for when the major number itself gets big. But doing the math - by that time, I expect that we'll have somebody more competent in charge who isn't afraid of numbers past the teens. So I'm not going to worry about it. […]

This episode is about a very large project, GNOME. With Emmanuele's help, we gained insights into GNOME and learned how an open-source project with several hundred developers works. trommelspeicher.de/podcast/spe

As an and enthusiast, it's genuinely awesome to see increased mainstream coverage of and . Unfortunately, a lot of these articles are riddled with mistakes, misinformation, clickbait, and overall low quality. A few minutes ago, while catching up on tech news I came across one author's frequent posts on Linux and FreeBSD.

To emphasize my point, I am only going to focus on one article titled, "After decades on Linux, FreeBSD finally gave me a reason to switch operating systems."

The following passages stuck out like sore thumb:

-But is it really? Subjective, particularly if coming from a GUI-driven Linux distribution. Frankly I find FreeBSD easier because of the excellent documentation and coherent design.

"FreeBSD is Unix-like" but further down he states, "Essentially, FreeBSD is Unix, where Linux is based on Unix."

"Think of FreeBSD as a more challenging version of Linux. This operating system doesn't hold your hand, so you might learn a thing or two as you install it and the software you require. Even for a seasoned Linux veteran like me, FreeBSD can often be a head-scratcher."

-Challenging because it's *different than Linux*? FreeBSD doesn't hold your hand? What about , , , heck even ? Since the author didn't mention it, I'm going to assume he did not check the FreeBSD Handbook and his "seasoned Linux" experience has been using a Linux desktop for a couple years. Also, head-scratcher?! Being an experienced Debian user, I'd be scratching my head too if I just decided to use Gentoo on a whim. The trauma of hand-configuring the xorg.conf file was real.

Finally, contrary to the article's title, the author ended up not switching to FreeBSD.

Discussions frequently attract users of other systems.

Still, cafe community thoughts are welcome.

I knew basically nothing about Linux at the time, but the logo just clicked 😁 It also felt more up to date and actively worked on, so I figured it was a good place to start.

The Pangolin looks like your standard 15 inch ultrabook. It's pretty thin, at 0.71 inches, or 1.8cm, and it weighs 1.79kilos, or almost 4 pounds. It's 16:9, with a 15.6 inches screen, and it's made of aluminium. The aluminium chassis is robust, with minimal deck flex around the hinge or the palm rests, and a bit more give in the middle of the keyboard.

And it's also pretty modular, you can open the laptop easily with 11 screws. Only the battery, wireless card and storage are accessible, the RAM seems soldered.

It comes with the Ryzen 7 6800U, an 8 core, 16 threads beast that goes up to 4.7 Gigahertz. It's paired with the integrated Radeon 680M. You also can only get it with 32 gigs of RAM. In terms of storage, you get a minimum of a 250Gig PCIE4 NVME SSD, and can go up to 16 TB.

It comes with WIfie 6E and Bluetooth 5.2.

The display is 15.6 inches, and only 1080p. It's 144hz refresh rate, and has a 70 Wh battery.

So, on the left, you get the barrel charger, an HDMI 2.0 port, 2 USB 3.2 Gen 2 type A ports, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 type C port that supports display port 1.4 and also support charging the device.

You also get a headphone jack, and, interestingly, a physical killswitch for the webcam complete with a little LED to let you know when the camera is off.

On the right, you have another type A USB 3.2GEN 2, a full size SD card reader, which is nice, a pop-out gigabit ethernet port, and that little kensington lock to keep your laptop attached to your desk.

The Ryzen 7 6800U is a pretty powerful CPU. On Geekbench 6, it got a single core score of 2002 and a multi core score of 8662.

In terms of graphics, the integrated Radeon 680M can deliver surprisingly good performance. Running the usual Shadow of the tomb raider benchmark, at the native 1080p and medium settings, it got 30 FPS. On low settings, it managed an average of 42 FPS.

As per thermals, at idle, the CPU ran at around 34 to 38 degrees Celsius, and under load, during gameplay, it never went past 91 degrees.

Now for the battery life, with the display at 144hz, in balanced mode, running youtube videos in a loop on Firefox, it lasted for 7 hours.

When putting it in battery saving mode, with the display running at 60hz, it lasted for 8 and a half hours.

The Pangolin comes with a chiclet style keyboard. It's backlit. It comes with a numpad, and it's nice to use. Key travel is good, the stroke is precise, and the keys are large and nice. It comes with a SUPER key, of course

As per the touchpad, it's a decent size, it's very smooth, and while it's not centered which always annoys me, it works really well with Pop OS's gestures, the click is solid and doesn't rattle at all and the sound is satisfying. The only issue is with the two button spaces at the bottom: they don’t react to tap to click, which can lead to some missed inputs.

The webcam is 720p, and it's just not good. It's super stuttery, it's still a potato cam. The microphone is above average.

As per the speakers, they get pretty loud, but at max volume, they'll definitely start vibrating the chassis and you'll hear that sort of rattly sound. Apart from that, they do have a bit of bass, and they don't sound too tinny. They're good enough, basically, but not at max volume.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Alt...---
