My solution to the copyfail account escalation thing was to delete all the users.

Problem solved!

Okay, update on this. The exploit does seem to work even if 'lsmod | grep algif_aead' returns nothing.

I tested it on my local, non-production, Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 system.

    Crazy exploit!

Now that means I have a bunch of work to do to mitigate for this.

I don’t want to run a mitigation that doesn’t need to be run. Just in case that introduces a problem in a system that is currently working fine and not exploitable.

So from what I’ve learned so far:

    lsmod | grep algif_aead

this checks to see if the exploitable module is loaded.

You can check if the module is present in the system, but not currently loaded with:

    modinfo algif_aead 2>/dev/null

If that returns information, the module is present and could be loaded.

But you have to have root privileges to load the module.

So my logic is that if

    lsmod | grep algif_aead

returns nothing, the vulnerable Linux kernel module is not loaded and therefore not exploitable… even if the module is present on the system but not loaded.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

None of the Linux devices I've checked with:

          lsmod | grep algif_aead

          seem to be exploitable.

From what I understand, if the above command that checks to see if the exploitable kernel module is loaded returns nothing, then the exploit cannot be run.

Question on the #CopyFail Linux vulnerability:

If "lsmod | grep algif_aead" returns nothing, is the vulnerability not exploitable?

Most of my Linux machines are running older, non-patched kernels, but it doesn't seem like the affected kernel module is active... so does that mean a system that returns nothing for "lsmod | grep algif_aead" is not at risk for this exploit?

Except that it turns out that after it has been fixed in mainline, nobody bothered actually backporting the fix to all the LTS branches. And it doesn't apply cleanly (social.treehouse.systems/@thes). What a shitshow!

(And we've been only talking how 5.x don't get vulnerability fixes in time — but it turns out that anything but the latest is insecure to use!)

Very unfortunate that the fix for CVE-2026-31431 isn't easily backportable, with a new API being added, and then its implementation details changing, since the last LTS (6.12 vs 6.18).

So you read about , and are like… owww, shit. But then you see that it was responsibly disclosed after being fixed in main, we had releases since, they went stable in (over other fixes), so we should be good, right?

Except that it turns out that after it has been fixed in mainline, nobody bothered actually backporting the fix to all the LTS branches. And it doesn't apply cleanly (social.treehouse.systems/@thes). What a shitshow!

(And we've been only talking how 5.x don't get vulnerability fixes in time — but it turns out that anything but the latest is insecure to use!)

Very unfortunate that the fix for CVE-2026-31431 isn't easily backportable, with a new API being added, and then its implementation details changing, since the last LTS (6.12 vs 6.18).

As people rightly highlight that the #CopyFail fix status in various #Linux distros is… confusing, it’s worth keeping in mind you can deploy the workaround everywhere with no side effects:

                                                      # echo "install algif_aead /bin/false" > /etc/modprobe.d/disable-algif.conf

I love "Preview" on macOS, and there doesn't appear to be an equal on . Lots of things are pretty good.

Preview lets me open a PDF, annotate it, delete pages, add pages, and save it. It's quick, easy, and super effective.

I had to annotate a PDF on Debian just now, and I did it with a 3-step process.

                                                            1. for i in 0 1 2; do convert -density 300 document.pdf[${i}] page${i}.png; done
                                                            2. Open the page I want to annotate in Drawing and do my annotations
                                                            3. convert page*.png document-annotated.pdf

At the end of the day, this was OK. It turned a 100K 3-page PDF into a 700K PDF.

But I have rasterized all the pages when they weren't rasterized before. It worked for my purposes, but it isn't as good as directly editing a PDF doc with some annotations.

I had an Epson Eco-Tank in South Africa but was having a hell of a time calibrating the colours.

I would like it to take up to 300gm paper.

The world isn't a zero sum game and not everything is for everyone and that's OK. Diversity is a feature, not a bug.

What bugs me more is I wanted to understand and help troubleshoot what appeared to be a bug and didn't get that opportunity from Bazzite support.

I’m especially interested in tools that prioritize keyboard-driven navigation and accessibility.

It's still great a option if you are gaming focused, but I was hoping for something more robust for a laptop experience.

For a small fleet, I want them in Ansible: templated config, registry login, Podman secrets, systemd handlers, SELinux labels, and repeatable deployment.

That's because the first pre-release (aka "-rc1") of 7.1 is out – which leaves plenty of time to find, report, debug, and fix any problems that those distros otherwise will encounter when they switch to 7.1.y in about eight to ten weeks. And testing is not even hard, as easy-to-install packages with pre-built mainline kernels exist for all three distros[3].

Testing in one or two weeks when -rc2 or -rc3 are out is good, too. But you really want to test by 7.1-rc6 (five weeks from now): By then, Linus wants all regressions introduced and reported early in the 7.1 cycle to be fixed. Things are thus expected to work by then – but if not, there is still enough time to test, debug, and fix most regressions.

Reporting any later is often too late to fix regressions before those distros switch to the 7.1.y series -- which will happen within one or two weeks (in the case of Arch and Tumbleweed) or three to four (Fedora) after 7.1 is released, as 7.0.y likely becomes EOL about two weeks after 7.1 is out. This is why they'll switch then, even if regressions are known.

It was very rough back then. Could explode your screen if you weren't careful, and that's only a slight exaggeration.

But there are a few caveats, some of them:

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                * "people still use" means "in production with recent kernels" – public or private museums can use old kernel versions.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                * You have to make your case against the removal (and might have to help testing going forward) – which is what a few people did successfully for the drivers mentioned above[3].
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                * Timing is important. It's best to speak up before something is removed. Chances that a removal is reverted are likely good if you speak up in the mainline cycle where the removal was performed. It might work in the following cycle, too (e.g. in the 9 weeks after after a new mainline release where something was removed is out). But if you speak up later, you are likely too late -- which is why you want to use the latest mainline and not jump from one longterm release to the next once a year, as then it most likely is too late when you notice a removal.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                * Exceptions from the "no regressions" rule made, for example in case something is seriously broken, a huge security risk/maintenance burden, and basically unfixable at the same time; but these are rare and individual judgement calls, so it is best to not worry about.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                [1] lwn.net/Articles/1068928/

Although his entry did not win, the artwork was adopted by the Linux community as the iconic brand character. The name “Tux” comes from “Torvalds’ UniX” and refers to the black-and-white tuxedo appearance of penguins.

Because that shows that the community, or maybe the whole FLOSS ecosystem, is doing a bad job at communicating that developers and testers need to invest at least time and maybe money to ensure things continue to work.

Which is why at some point things, at least for the with its "no regressions" policy, boil down to: "Unless somebody tests regularly (e.g., at least each new mainline version, better each new -rc1), things you care about might get broken and/or removed before it becomes hard or impossible to fix that".

If a hardware is very widespread, there is a decent chance that somebody else will do that testing[1]; but over time you might need to become that "somebody" to prevent a unhappy outcome for yourself and others.

[1] but hardware is tricky and has many warts that show up only in special environments. Maybe yours is one of those, so you might want to help with testing nevertheless. Which is a good way to give back to FLOSS.

The "no regressions" rule still applies – so nothing people still use should be removed (or the removal should be reverted in case it turns out people still use it).

This is why the network drivers 3c59x and xirc2ps, MVME147 that were on the chopping board will remain[2].

A bald man with a neutral expression who is saying: I want Linux to grow. The desktop share is between 4% and 11%.

That's if you count the "unknown" in StatCounter.

Windows is still too big.

In the second slide, a balding man wearing a spectacle and a blue shirt with a boasty expression says: ACKCHYUALLY GNU/Linux is on servers all over the world, plus phones and Chromebooks.

Your router has GNU/Linux. Windows is the small guy.

I like that things like installing Blender also pulls in AMD rocm clr and friends and gets Cycles support working without any real futzing around.

No zfs and simple btrfs. I converted the root disk into a btrfs raid1 mirror after the fact but it would be cool if that was possible in the installer. Maybe I missed it. I can live with btrfs, I guess. Ha.

Thinking about putting it on my main box since I've got btrfs retroactive mirroring figured out. First time using (i.e. trusting) btrfs so maybe I should let some more water go under Solus' keel before going 'all in'.

More third parties need to officially embrace Flatpak.

This is why the network drivers 3c59x and xirc2ps, MVME147 that were on the chopping board will remain[2].

Heureusement, j'avais installé debian en gardant une partition /home séparée, donc a priori j'ai juste une réinstallation à faire, mais je ne suis pas sûr de la configuration des points de montage. Vous pouvez m'aider ?

ALL webpages just scroll on their own to the very bottom of the page. No key presses, combinations, or even the ESC key fixes or interrupts this. Clicking on a menu item like File causes the selected options to cycle infinitely. The *only* fix is to reboot the laptop.

I think it looks okay, but really isn't much different than the default Breeze themes, though it does have an annoying (to me) Google logo that flashes on the screen between login and displaying the KDE desktop.

I mostly use a decent laptop (An ACER Aspire, 10th gen i3, 8 gb RAM) for my daily routine: google, mail, youtube, movies, music... it runs perfectly smooth with Windows 11, I don't need more than that, honesty. But: I know there are LOTS of apps running without knowing what they are, consuming my computer resources and constantly sending information without my permission (OK, with my permission, 'cause we all accept the conditions of Windows, if we use Windows xD ).

Every day a new step! Go!
