In converting my arcade machine from Windows to CachyOS to NixOS, I discovered that #NixOS does not have some of my needed libretro cores, so time to start trying to contribute. Submitted a pull request for the pokemini core as a start. Got plans for a few more missing cores I need soon after.

Maybe some more emulators coming a little bit later once I get a few commits to nixpkgs under my belt.

That first super hot day … in may. Fortunately only one day at a sweltering 30º C. The rest of the week was much more acceptable.

I did saw people post pictures of fallen green leaves claiming that the trees in Berlin are shedding their leaves because of the heat. That of course was utter bullshit as it rained quite heavily the week before and our trees don’t shed their leaves at a mere 30º C. I get climate catastrophe urgency. But bluntly and stupidly faking stuff doesn’t help anyone.

The countryside is very beautiful at this time of the year. Lush green and flowers and blossoms all over the place. We’re quite blessed over here.

Our bees have produced the first bucket full of honey. It’s our first honey since we’ve got them bees two years ago. We’re expecting to get around 50kg of honey this year. And we’ve grown from 2 bee hives to 3. Eventually taking over the beekeeping family tradition that went from my grandfather to my father in law and now to my wife and me.

Paperless NGX MCP

I started creating an MCP server for Paperless NGX. My intention was for me to talk to an LLM and have it modify/improve my Paperless documents. Paperless itself already got quite good AI models to do auto-tagging and detect the best correspondent and document type etc.

But I wanted to be able to have a document summary automatically created and also check whether a more powerful model would be able to improve on the tags etc.

I had searched for an existing MCP server. But the one I found didn’t actually work. Guess it was outdated and also fiddly to install. I don’t like the NPM based software as the NPM repository seems to be a huge security risk these days for all the worms infecting packages.

So I started to create an MCP server in Rust with the help of Claude Code. That worked out quite well and I’ve now got a working MCP that is just a single binary you can drop on your machine. Not additional stuff to be downloaded or installed. I’ve also started to write some skills for Claude and OpenCode to encapsulate my Paperless improvement prompts.

Iris Photos App

Stumbled across the Iris Photos app on Mastodon. This looks interesting and I gave it a try. It started to index my rather large photo archive which lives on my home NFS server. That’s more than 2 TB of data and hundred thousands of picture a few thousand videos. I wasn’t patient enough to let it finish. But I keeps picking up the task whenever I connect the NFS mount again. Definitely spend the 14 bucks of an introductory price as the app looks very promising to me. Especially like the stats feature 😉

Linux rules

Got a beautiful old notebook from a friend. An HP Spectre x360 with an Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM and 256GB SATA SSD. Probably about 10 years old. The screen can be folded so the device doubles as a touch tablet. The screen is quite good although I still don’t get what you’d use a touchscreen on a notebook for 😉

I’ve put Debian Linux with LXQT desktop on it, everything work out of the box and it feels like brand new. Unfortunately the RAM is soldered to the board. But at least the dead battery is swappable and I might order a new one. Quite love this device for it has a usable screen with good resolution and good colours and angle visibility.

Zucchini Schnitzel

Had left over Zucchini and prepared it like a german Schnitzel with egg and breadcrumbs and then pan fried it. Quite delicious and pretty simple to fix.

Jugend Kella PopChor

Last weekend the Jugend Kella PopChor from Templin was on their world tour and visited our little village. The kids played life in front of our church and it was marvellous. Great to see their talent and enthusiasm. Also great to see how much the rather old population of our village enjoyed the event.

On #Linux, I had been using Sway, but moved on to try Swayfx, Scroll, Niri, Hyprland and even a couple tiling solutions for Gnome and now I'm back on Swaywm.

I'll give some quick thoughts on each:

- Swayx: Great incremental improvement to Sway with rounded corners and drop shadows. If better supported on Ubuntu (work requirement), maybe I'll return.
- Niri. Nice scroller. Missing left/right alignment. 🧵

My latest technical difficulty has been getting my SD reader to work on Linux Mint... I'm trying to load my samples to an SD card to use with my hardware sampler, so I can make tracks in bed when I'm ill.

I'm surprised that there are so many forum threads about Linux Mint failing to mount SD cards and no solve. Shit like this makes me quite a bit disillusioned with Linux.

If anyone out there can offer a hand, I'd be very grateful. Running Linux Mint 21.3 on a 2019 iMac.

Dreißig Jahre KDE

...und alles begann mit einem genervten Studenten.

1996 hatte Matthias Ettrich genug von der Zerklüftung der Unix-Desktops, auf denen jedes Programm anders aussah und sich anders bedienen ließ. Seine Idee war eine einheitliche, freundliche Oberfläche für ganz normale Menschen, nicht nur für Profis. Er nannte sie Kool Desktop Environment, kurz KDE, ein kleiner Seitenhieb auf das damals verbreitete kommerzielle CDE. Gebaut wurde das Ganze mit C++ und dem ein Jahr zuvor von der norwegischen Firma Troll Tech entwickelten Framework Qt, das bis heute das technische Fundament von KDE bildet.

Auffällig viel davon ist in Deutschland passiert. 1997 trafen sich rund fünfzehn Entwickler in Arnsberg zur allerersten KDE-Konferenz, die später als KDE One in die Geschichte einging. Im selben Jahr wurde in Tübingen der KDE e.V. gegründet, der das Projekt bis heute rechtlich und finanziell trägt. Schon 1998 erschien die erste stabile Version, und 1999 zog ein kleiner Drache namens Konqi als Maskottchen ein, der uns bis heute erhalten geblieben ist.

Von da an ging es Schlag auf Schlag. KDE 2 brachte im Jahr 2000 den Browser und Dateimanager Konqueror, KDE 3 folgte 2002, und KDE 4 baute 2008 mit Plasma, Dolphin und Okular eine ganz neue Welt. 2014 kam Plasma 5, 2024 dann die große MegaRelease mit Plasma 6 und dem Umstieg auf Wayland. 2025 hat das Projekt sogar eine eigene Distribution namens KDE Linux aus der Taufe gehoben.

Zwei Dinge mag ich an dieser Geschichte besonders. Erstens: KDEs Web-Engine KHTML wurde Ende der Neunziger zur Grundlage von Apples WebKit und später Googles Blink. Heute laufen Chrome, Edge, Safari, Opera, Vivaldi und Brave im Kern auf KDE-Erbe, und in fast jeder Zeile deiner Server-Logs steht bis heute KHTML. Zweitens: KDE hat es bis in die Raumfahrt geschafft. In der Doku Good Night Oppy sieht man einen NASA-Ingenieur, der während des Flugs zum Mars an einer KDE-3-Workstation arbeitet.

Und ganz nebenbei steckt KDE Plasma seit 2021 auch im Steam Deck von Valve, also in einem der meistverkauften Handhelds der letzten Jahre.

Dreißig Jahre freie Software, getragen von einer Gemeinschaft, die Kontrolle, Datenschutz und digitale Selbstbestimmung in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, KDE.

It's good to be back, even if I'm rusty in Solaris-based environments.

I had Debian 13 on a 2009 Macbook Pro, which was really a too heavy load for this old machine. So I tried to remove the graphical desktop environments (I had tried several) and descended into a dependency hell ... and now I can report that it is possible to fuck up a system using the regular dselect/apt package management tools. In the end I had deinstalled the Wi-Fi drivers, the dhcp client, so no cable connection either, and even the "sudo" utility. That was the point where I gave up and did a fresh install.

😮 I don’t use the software suite formerly known as Office, but this “scheduled remote degradation” is very concerning.

In a parallel move, the software suite formerly known as as iWork was updated to include all manner of AI and subscription-based features that you can’t turn off. I thought this wouldn’t affect me (I refuse to upgrade), except that my current apps hound me every day: “hey there’s a new version! Time to upgrade bro! Click the big blue button!” Every day! But what if at some point they decide the nags aren’t enough, and they just kill my current tools without my consent?

I seriously am out of patience for this #enshittification trend. Whenever my current Mac dies, I’m switching over to #Linux #Mint.

I like the format `%j-%d-%H%M`:

Results so far:

* WMs and their taskbars: easy
* #Cinnamon : easy
* #GNOME : requires extension
* #KDE : no easy way to add the `%j` that I discovered
* #Xfce : easy

My working hypothesis is that if custom timedate is easy... harder things will be easier. And vice-versa. 🙂

This person also has something to say about #Linux and #systemd and is not afraid to face the wrath of the anti-systemd crowd:

"I don't understand why users now are so willing to defend things like systemd in the Linux space. They pretend like no one could use the ecosystem before it came around and that Linux was living in the stone age. The reality was plenty of us were using it since the mid-90s just fine. Things were certainly much better back then provided you had supported hardware and it was easier to participate in the development. Users got to drive the development as well because the users were the developers instead of faceless corporations. Sure you could ruin your CRT monitor with a misconfigured X server but other than that there wasn't much issue and it was easy enough to configure those things if you paid attention. It was certainly much easier to find answers and get support back then. People now pretend like web searches and discussion platforms didn't exist in those days. Lots of revisionist history being peddled by people that weren't alive back then and people who were alive back then that would prefer you didn't look to hard into the past.

Even systemd isn't unique. Linux has had a long history of people attempting to make "do everything" daemons which were horrible to work with and were eventually replaced by something else (usually, another "do everything" daemon). Everyone loves to hate on pulseaudio now for good reason. But most of them probably never dealt with it back in the day when it would randomly want to consume 100% of your CPU. There was another large daemon I've forgotten the name of now that would gobble up all your resources and was a pain in the ass to deal with and was eventually tossed out of userspace for good reason. People now pretend like they can't get along without udev even though setting up /dev and running static /dev is much more secure. They say the average user can't get along without auto mounted thumb drives when it's easy enough to run the mount command. Sadly, these people are some of the most vocal."

I self-host the DNS for my domains for more than 20 years now.

2026 now finally was the year, where I decomissioned the last BIND server and replaced it with a PowerDNS, containerized in Podman and a SQLite backend.

I already migrated the hidden-primariy to PowerDNS in 2022 (because of the REST API, compatibility with Traefik, easier DNSSEC handling and the higher flexibility) and now my secondaries are also migrated.

Nontheless, BIND was one of the most stable pieces of technology that I've ever used. But it also felt a bit unwieldy and old-fashined ins some ways.

Question to the #mail-admins here who have multiple servers and use #DANE. Let‘s say I have multiple servers and each server creates a wildcard-certificate for the same domain via Let‘s Encrypt. How are those TLSA-records handled? Or do you need a central certificate that gets distributed over all servers with a single TLSA-record? #email #unix #linux #bsd #sysadmin
