Bon... je crois que tout ce que j'ai pu lire (et ce que certains m'ont dit sur le Fedivers) me confirme dans l'usage du swap compressé (zram vs. zswap):
- zram UNIQUEMENT si vous n'avez pas de swap disque.
- si vous avez du swap disque, ZSWAP ET RIEN D'AUTRE.

Et : Si vous avez une forte pression sur la RAM, préférer swap disque + zswap, car zram se comporte mal dans ces cas là (les MRU sont envoyés sur disque, ce qui n'est carrément pas ce qu'on veut).

Mein Uralt-Rechner auf Arbeit lief am Ende mit Linux noch ganz okay. Nun habe ich doch mal einen neuen bekommen und weil's so gut lief, durfte ich wieder #Linux darauf installieren, Juhuuu! 🥳 (sonst nur Windows-Rechner um mich herum).

He had already been using Linux for years. Had an older ASUS desktop with a hard disk drive (HDD) and Ubuntu 18.04

He requested a replacement with a slightly newer ASUS desktop and an SSD. He does want to stay with Ubuntu, so will be installing the latest release of that.

He will also be buying a refurbished ThinkPad T560, also with Ubuntu 25.10

On est en 2026 et je me demande s’il est possible de synchroniser mes contacts entre deux services !!! 🤔🤔

En deux mots, j’ai mes emails chez #Fastmail (ça pourrait être n’importe quel autre service) et j’ai mes données chez #Nextcloud, y compris mes contacts.

J’ai déjà synchronisé Nextcloud avec l’appli Contact sur #Android, et avec #Thunderbird sur #Linux, et je sais que je peux faire facilement pareil pour Fastmail.

Ce que je veux faire c’est de synchroniser directement Fastmail et Nextcloud pour avoir une seule source de donnée à gérer, et éviter les duplications des contact.

Mais je ne trouve rien qui me permet de croire que c’est possible !! ?? 

Est-ce que vous avez déjà essayé ça ? 🤓 Et réussi ??? 🤩

It is definitely alive on the local network and accessible, but all attempts to connect via ssh timeout.

Sometime around 2017 (IIRC) I got nostalgic for a little "netbook" type computer and decided, for some reason, that an HP Stream 14 would scratch that itch.

These are really low spec machines, even for 2016-2017. It came with Windows 10 and the first Windows Update basically filled the disk and effectively bricked the device. LOL!

I installed Linux on it after that (ofc) but didn't really use it much. So slow....

I was digging around in my service manuals library this evening and stumbled over it in a drawer of files... for some unknown reason it was in the drawer.

I started it up thinking it was still running Arch from back before Covid and might be entertaining to try to get it to update to the present.

Hmm, Alpine 3.21 boots console but sway is installed. Weird, no recollection of doing anything with this machine 12-18 months ago. "I'm not saying it's aliens..."

Ok, Alpine updates to 3.23 without issues. I'm not much of a tiling window manager person so I installed Plasma. Bad idea! With 4GB of ram and an afterthought of a CPU and storage it doesn't run very well at all.

Installed LXQt with labwc and it runs great! Tweaking and themeing to come. (Hi @Tionisla 👋 )

Not sure what I'm going to do with this machine but currently it is pretty usable for simple stuff. Screen and keyboard sucks, pretty close to e-waste. Lesson: ~$200 (retail) laptop is about as good as you would expect a $200 laptop to be. Ha.

I've gotten a nice present with the recent version of audacity as presented in MX Linux my desktop distro of choice. The latest is version v3.7.7 just wait for the version the current one on in MX Linux is v3.7.5.

This version has new file format based features, which of course means the data files are not backward compatible

features since v3.6

• Master effects

• Audacity has master effects! Master effects are effects which apply to the entire project at once. More information can be found at Audacity Support: Using master effects & realtime effects.

• New compressor / limiter

• A new compressor and limiter have been added, replacing the previous versions.

• A gain reduction history has been added to these effects when they’re used as a realtime effect.

• Factory Presets suitable for a wide range of use cases for these effects have been provided by Vladislav Isaev and Marek Iwaszkiewicz, available via the Presets & Settings button.

• New themes

• Audacity has new and improved dark and light themes.

• switch between themes via Preferences -> Interface.

• The theme previously used still is around as Classic theme, and themes even older than that can be optionally installed as custom themes.

• Updated instructions on creating custom themes can be found here [link]

• Increased performance

• Audacity is now quite a bit snappier than before, especially when working on larger projects and on larger screens.

BUGS

Audacity has a long standing bug which is a buffer overflow error when you want to edit projects larger than 100 hours.

What happens is that the cursor loops at exactly 99:59:59 hours back to 00:00:00 hours effectively making editing beyond 100 hours impossible.

work around

What I do is simply record past the rollover, do everything live, meaning make no mistakes and chop the project into pieces if something has to be edited in post production. It's an annoyance but it works

I currently have a project which is aimed at 120 hours. I will keep you posted on the bug

• Realize that by the time a critical bug has been reported, verified, patched and delivered to your distribution of choice, a significant amount of time has passed...
• From the first day the bug has been discovered [zero day] to the day you patch your computing machine, you've had a vunurable open machine in that one respect.
• Keep the amount of time between the availability, of patches & the update of your machines, especially your VMs (Qemu et al) & physical servers as short as possible
• Make sure to always use manual updates on your server VM's!
• I shall not explain why, start reading on Wikipedia and furthe, the explanation is too long for this short post

• every OS can have vunurabilities
• Security in obscurity does not work!
• you are not secure because you run obsolete AmigaOS QNX or cool and niche *BSD as an OS

2. Realtime-Sync erkennt das und startet ein Skript, das aus den Exif-Daten Ordner anlegt und die Dateien auf SSD-Pfad kopiert.
3. Da dieser Pfad zu einem OwnCloud-Space auf meinem Homeserver gehört, werden die neuen Fotos dort aufgenommen.

Muss noch ein paar Tests machen, sieht aber soweit gut aus.

Why I love freeBSD

I love FreeBSD because it doesn't rename my network interfaces after a reboot or an upgrade.

I shall dwell on what Stefano may mean as I have experienced this nightmare on the Linux path countless times

• using the if tools ifconfig ifup ifdown route and others on a LAN local network I repeat on a LOCAL network
• these tools were depreciated due to many issues with them, decades later (IIRC)
• no linux distro ever told me as a user that I needed to use replacements like ip
• I install a new version of a random distro (was on an ESR) and could not address the NIC's no iftools
• names of the NIC's were also replaced with cumbersome cryptic names, again, no fucks given no warning, I should have read the remarks in the GNU tool sources?
• WTF?!?

In that period I needed to enter the world of freeBSD
it was a chilibox experience with three main factors. Great docs, consistent tools logic and control governed by a central body of all, no guerilla tool changes which could disrupt server up keep flow. Just rest, ease and stability

Mind you I know BSD from before the chilibox, in fact I've played with BSD way before even Linux was in the balls of though of Torvalds

TLDR;

• choose BSD for your servers if you need consistent OS behaviour for decades
• choose Linux for bleeding edge changes and chances of breaking server (VMs) at regular updates
• choose win64 for love of being tortured
• choose mac to give away your aurum to the mac overlords
• choose the abacus for absolute stability

I only just got started on this, but maybe someone else is further along? I am trying to find out what the last commit of the Linux kernel is that's most likely free of LLM-generated slop. I am "militant" in this, so I don't care if it was "reviewed by a human" before it went in, that doesn't make it better in my view. The quick deductions I was able to make earlier today:

- Sep 4 2025, commit 913e65a2fe1a16fa253c4a016e2306b2cf9ffef8 has the first "official" aka "documented via Assisted-by:" LLM slop

- Jul 27 2025, commit 038d61fd642278bab63ee8ef722c50d10ab01e8f is Linux 6.16 so that might still be "clean" as it were; later stable kernels in that series would need to be checked

- Nov 17 2024, commit adc218676eef25575469234709c2d87185ca223a is Linux 6.12 so that's probably the last "longterm" kernel that could be "clean"; later stable kernels in that series would need to be checked again

All in all it seems to me that some 6.12.y kernel is definitely the last one I'd want to use. Now given that I only run Linux on ancient hardware, that's probably not a big deal for me; your mileage may obviously vary.

Anyone else have a better take already? Aside from "you worry too much, just use the new kernels, they're fine" because that's not really helpful to me. 😉

Aber ich finde die x/y Parameter nicht im D-bus und nirgendwo. 2 angesetzte LLMs und Stackoverfkow finden auch nichts was funktioniert.

Checking out the "Bazaar" flatpak app store because I noticed it's the default on Bazzite, and that makes sense since it's an atomic/immutable OS, but I've noticed one thing that Gnome Software and I think KDE Discover both do better. When an app has optional plugins that can be installed, Bazaar lists every version of those plugins, not necessarily in order, so you have to manually pick thru to find the correct one, whereas Gnome Software makes it a bit simpler.

Boah ey, nächstes Thema mit Linux Mint. Es fordert mich bei der Installation auf vor der Installation in Windows den BitLocker zu deaktivieren. Wozu? Musste ich bei Fedora doch auch nicht. Da müsste ich nur nach der Installation einmal den BitLocker Key bei eingeben und gut war.
Da ich das Passwort der Windows Installation nicht habe ist hier dann heute Schluss.
Und wahrscheinlich ist das dann auch das Ende des Versuchs mit Linux, da selbst die Anforderung sich einmal anzumelden damit ich weiter machen kann wahrscheinlich bei der Besitzerin sofort zu einem Mental Meltdown führen wird.

Hat jemand eine Idee, woran das liegen kann?
Eine bereits eingerichtete WiFi Verbindung funktioniert. Boote ich von Stick und richte eine Verbindung neu ein (mit den 3 Optionen) funktioniert das auch.

Ich will gerade ein Linux Mint parallel zu Windows installieren. Ich möchte das mit Hardware Treibern für Drittanbieter installieren.
Dabei werde ich aufgefordert ein UEFI Secure Boot Passwort zu vergeben, damit diese Treiber installiert werden können. Dieses muss ich dann beim Reboot neu eingeben.

Frage:
Muss ich dieses Passwort dann jedesmal beim Booten eingeben? Oder nur einmal beim Reboot nach der Installation und danach nie wieder?
Ersteres wäre inakzeptabel. Letzteres beträfe ja nur mich einmalig bei der Installation. Das wäre OK.

Bon ben par la force des choses, j'ai migré mon vieux Linux Mint (noyau 6.8) sous le dernier Mint (noyau 6.17) par réinstallation complète.
Pas trop galère, en fait.
Juste les logiciels à réinstaller, et j'ai dû migrer mes script Caja en scripts Nemo (juste une variable à changer et déplacer les fichiers au bon endroit 🙂).
Firefox, qBitTorrent, Thunderbird et compagnie on tout de suite retrouvé leurs petits, y compris le cache et les mots de passe. J'adore.

I left NixOS because as much as I loved configuration as code for handling everything and the benefits that brought, the foundational way NixOS works meant that some of the stuff I need to use just cannot be run on it. (No, don't give me suggestions, it's already too late and NONE of the suggestions I received worked.)

I decided to swap to CachyOS as I was very used to Arch and wanted to try it. CachyOS is excellent and does a great job of smoothing out some of Arch's sharp edges but I really missed declaratively controlling my machine. I went looking for a solution, most of which were... rather odd. A version of Arch Linux that's declarative but everything's flatpaks? Why?

I did find something that works so far. Configuration is done either through yaml or lua files. You can use Lua for doing things conditionally or if you need more control. Manages packages, services, dotfiles. It's been about 2 days, but so far so good. We'll see if I still like it in a week.

Je ne peux même plus installer de polices, je ne peux pas valider l'ouverture d'un dossier en tant qu'administrateur, le prompt me dit que mon mot de passe n'est pas reconnu, que MON EMPREINTE DIGITALE n'est pas reconnue !

Je n'arrive pas à résoudre ce problème, ça commence à me rendre dingue !

So apparently #GNOME 50 removes support for #X11 entirely, it's #Wayland-only.
Last time I checked there was still hardware people were using #Linux on daily that Wayland didn't work on.
Perhaps they've finally fixed all those issues and it works everywhere. I hope so, but I kinda doubt it.
This feels like GNOME's Windows 11 upgrade moment, and I don't mean that in a good way.

Neuer Laptop und Arch bootet nicht. 🤔 Eigentlich habe ich FreeBSD lieber, geht auch so irgendwie auf Laptops, aber Linux ist auf mobilen Geräten besser, imho.
Arch war für mich immer ein Kompromiss, weil es fix installiert ist und wenig bis gar nicht an den Paketen herumfummelt. Viele Distros machen das und es ist ein zweischneidiges Schwert. Kann gut sein, mitunter aber auch nicht. Ich sag nur rausgepatchte Crypto wie bei Debian vor ein paar Jahren... Ausserdem ist es nicht so aufgeblasen wie andere Distros.

Ich nutze die Gelegenheit und installiere Gentoo. Braucht etwas länger zum Einrichten, aber dann passt es wenigstens genauso wie ich mir es denke mit minimalen Kompromissen. Kein systemd und das Audio-Backend, was ich will.
