Got a ton of boosts when I posted this originally, but no one reached out regarding job opportunities. Hoping that can change now that it's a bit more pressing.

I'd be happy to work for cheap on any paid projects while I look for a job -- provided they fit my skillset. I'm great with Python and machine learning, I've worked on ML research and developed novel ML algorithms, and I also have tons of experience working with automated file transfers, databases, automated Excel reporting, and probably other things you may find useful. Just ask! I take pride in doing quality work, and I'm a really clever monkey. :)

So my institution is planning to demote as many full professors as it can, partly in response to the chronic underfunding of British higher education, partly pour encourager les autres. We had a couple of years of lip-service to dignity at work, work-life balance, etc, but we never believed that, and it's back to performance management by threats, just like the good old days.

Is anyone here a freelance copyeditor?

The book in question will be distributed for free, Italian author, but written in English... it's aimed at a tech engineer audience, it's essentially a "lessons learned from my tech career" book in the style of The Effective Programmer (Lau) and The Manager's Path (Fournier), and written by the most impactful engineer I know.

However... he is not a copyeditor, and he's shared his first few chapters, they're good... but need work to tighten up more.

This would be paid, I'll support him by paying.

Boosts welcome, examples of work appreciated, freelance copyeditors with some work under their belt only, must have English as native language or very high fluency, knowledge of the tech industry desired but not necessary.

Hey folks, I wanna throw in on this thing. I'm a freelance musician based in Los Angeles in need of more work. I teach guitar and voice, and I record, mix, and master music for others.

I got hit with a one-two punch of long-COVID and autistic burnout In 2021. I'm a former church musician, and I'm queer (you can imagine how that might have gone). I've been scraping by for a long time.

My spouse and I quit a weekly church gig because we got tired of the discrimination we were dealing with as a queer couple. The loss of that income has been a bigger hit to our finances than we'd thought.

Because of my chronic illness, I'm not able to work full-time. My spouse works full-time for the both of us. But our cost of living, with my health needs, is getting higher.

But I specialized in organizing data. Like someone who hasn't organized their closet for a long while and calls Marie Kondo to clean up their wardrobe, I'm the Marie Kondo for data. I know how to move (big amounts of) data from here to there, and how to organize it so that information is easily accessible and insights are facilitated. Without people like me, data is just noise.

I was told that data is the new oil/gold/electricity. And I do believe that there are use cases for doing good, still waiting to be discovered. Otherwise I'd probably already have switched careers.

But my specialization is most useful with large datasets. Small datasets aren't in such dire needs of good organization strategies, same as you don't need Marie Kondo when two pair of shoes and three shirts is all you own.

I wonder if my specialization is useful only to Big Tech.

Does anyone have ideas for how I could use my skills for Small Tech? Does maybe even anyone has uses for someone like me?

There are four large cylindrical telescope domes and two small rounder ones under the night sky. But the stars aren't point sources: instead, they are curved arcs streaking across the sky. In the middle of the frame there's an arc brighter than the rest. It looks like a Q-tip, with white bright ends and a thinner red middle part. It's the Moon, which starts bright, then fades during the eclipse and finally gets brighter again.

So - let's try social media. Please boost if you are willing, or pass this along if you know someone who needs what I can offer.

I'll be brief: I'm a very experienced System Reliability Engineer, with a track record of dependability and scalability. I take people's problems - stability, uptime, scale, cost, durability, speed, security and attack resistance - and fix them. I have the dubious honor of generally costing less to employ than I save my employer. If everything is perfect - you don't need me. But if you do, you may need me badly.

I'm available. Drop me a note.

In January, during the ceasefire, he was able to get short-term projects. He goes to a dedicated workplace every day even now, in the middle of an ongoing genocide, to have electricity and a working Internet connection to look for work but has been getting rejections on Upwork, likely because he’s based in Gaza.

“I just want to get back to work because I don’t want to lose everything in my life.”

I'm based in Sydney, Australia and I am open to remote work assuming I can work during my daytime.

My past experience has been mainly in Web Development as a full stack developer.

I'm good with everything you'd expect across the stack (HTML, CSS, Javascript, sql, python, bash, git, linux) and am also well versed writing software in Rust and Elm.

I have a lot of experience speaking with clients and explaining how everything works too.

I like clean code and functional programming. I like thinking a lot about how to make things easier for other and my future self reading the code.

Happy to learn anything to fill in the gaps, and I often like learning about the problem space that the software operates in.

In my last role I had to write software used by nurses and doctors, and it was interesting learning about what their workflows and constraints were and adapting the interface to suit their needs (basically automating things that they do a lot).

If you are interesting in hiring me, please contact me at: chain-owl-empathy@duck.com
