I like that TuxedoOS has decided to shift towards supporting a community based distro, such as Debian.

So with TuxedoOS migrating to Debian, I wonder if Linux Mint will start to prioritize development of LMDE over standard Ubuntu based LM.

Everybody's going on about "AI" coding agents, but what about the other background stuff that really needs to happen that's languishing?

What I think someone needs to do is go through the entire #Debian bug tracker and find reports against versions that are no longer actively supported. There's bugs against Firefox 65 still in the system that are never gonna get touched. Close them. If it's still a problem in the current version the reporter can re-open the issue or open a new one, tagging current.

There are probably hundreds if not thousands of reports that could get silently dropped. Don't even get me started on how many there are in ifupdown alone. How does anyone manage to wade through that?

Frustratingly a recent #debian update broke #kodi's ability to play #1080p videos. I don't get much more from kodi's log than "error <general>: eglSwapBuffers failed (EGL_BAD_ALLOC)". I've tried messing with various setting to no avail and nothing obvious appears in #dmesg output. The 720p videos still play fine and I know some of the failing videos worked last week before the update.

Any hints welcome ;-)

Memory shows as 27.3 GB, even though there are four 8GB memory modules for a total of 32GB. The reason is that the Radeon graphics on the 5700G CPU reserves some of the system RAM for use by the graphics.

@rl_dane The issue I have with #Debian's included yt-dlp is it's almost always out of date. I just looked on my #FreeBSD build server and it's in Ports under www/yt-dlp.

I'll have to check the version numbers when I have more time but already I am thinking that using FreeBSD is a better option here.

So there seems to be a null pointer dereference bug in certain #Linux kernels, like 7.1.x, that has been causing issues with my #Jellyfin server on #Debian. I'm not enough of an expert to fully understand it, but one indication was that htop would also have issues when the issue began, and it has something to do with the movement, translation or compaction of memory during GPU workloads, like transcoding. The solution, for now, besides downgrading the kernel, seems to be to disable HMM or IOMMU.

Should I keep fighting to install #davinci resolve on my #Debian #KDE plasma machine or just give up and use #KDEnlive ? I just wanna clip out a section of a MP4 ...

Some services will be momentarily down today while we migrate from Dynadot to Dreamhost for our domain Registrar. Moving forward, all DNS will be managed at Hurricane Electric and/or Dreamhost. Thanks for patience 🙏🏼

This sudden change was due to Dynadot changing their subdomain record policy from 250 to 50 without notice. This caused a week-long disruption in building out new services due to any record over the cap being irrecoverable once deleted and new ones being impossible to create. Despite having 150+ records in the past, Dynadot responded that they've never supported more than 150 and would only restore that.

Both the change in terms and contract without notice and the dishonesty once a ticket was filed serve as sufficient reasons to ditch Dynadot. This was surprising to say the least. They've been a solid Registrar. As for DNS, we only used it the last three years having originally used afraid.org for over a decade. Ultimately, this is for the best however, because it is always unwise to keep one's DNS and Registrar at the same host. Hurricane Electric's DNS is additionally a breath of fresh air from 1998-2002 era and so easy to use - the alphabetical rendering of records amazing 🤩

Just fired up my old #Dell #laptop. Miraculously it booted into the OS. Honestly I wasn't expecting that. Time to back up that old (yet still important) data!

Earlier this year the battery died and I had one helluva time trying to get it up and running with a replacement OEM battery....to the point where I just bought a new laptop altogether and left this one in a drawer.

But, if this one continues to work then perhaps I will replace #Debian with #FreeBSD.

I'm using boxes that are 6-8 years old, so I don't need a shiny new kernel.

I'm also running Debian stable which uses ancient versions of packages, so I feel like I could run with an older kernel.

Never a better time to switch to #Debian

Just a toot to express my gratitude to the #Debian community. Upgrading from Bookworm to Trixie was a breeze with the help from the extensive documentation¹. And that the OS didn't come up after a reboot was probably due to a configuration error on my side. Booting with a live USB image, chrooting² the upgraded OS and running grub-install fixed that.

So thanks! Thanks for providing such a great OS and such good documentation!

I have 1 iMac (Mint), 1 MacMini (LMDE), 1 MB Pro (MX Linux) and 1 MB Air (MX Linux) from 2011 and 1 MacMini (Mint) from 2014. They all work great with Linux but tbh best with Debian or Debian based distros like MX or LMDE.

Frage an die #Debian und generell #Linux Fraktion hier. Es geht um #dnsmasq. In nahezu allen Beschreibungen und Tutorials finde ich, dass man in der dnsmaq.conf die Zeile "local-service" entfernen soll, und man dann auch von fremden Netzwerken auf den den DNS Server zugreifen können soll. Diesen Eintrag gibt es aber gar nicht. Wenn ich jetzt mal grob über /etc hinweg grepe, dann find ich in /etc/sv/dnsmasq/run, dass dort das Programm mit --local-service aufgerufen wird. Tatsächlich frage ich mich gerade, ob ich das dort einfach entfernen kann, oder ob es mir das beim nächsten update wieder überschreibt? Und warum wird das überhaupt dort aufgerufen, und nicht wie alles andere über systemd? Fragen über Fragen...

One of the other highly used packages keeping this dependency around is iproute2. The only thing in there that uses bdb is arpd. Is anyone actually still using arpd? Could this be spun out into its own package, or dropped entirely?

YouTube Linux tier lists based on vibes always crack me up. Debian gets called "ancient" like that's bad.

Reality: stable base for what matters (system, libs) + custom APT repos + Flatpak + .deb + source for apps that need to be current.

My Librewolf, for instance, stays current via their APT repo. LibreOffice via direct .deb. System packages via apt. All on Debian.

The "Debian is outdated" take usually comes from people who only know apt install from official repos.

Debian's real strength is being a stable foundation you build on, not a walled garden.

the never ending story

I wanted to play a dvd I hadn't touched for a while. I had the option of

• nice -1 vlc and
• nice -1 mplayer

to execute playback I opted for vlc gui version, even though I normally use vlc -I cli because of the great logs produced there. While using the gui version of VLC I missed the log output and jumped to mplayer to see the stats. A nice set of parameters were echoed to the CON, but in the output a entry jumped up

I had used rpm based distributions which added libdvdread by default, so I had forgotten about it through the years, when I migrated to debian based distro's

It was puzzling that debian decided to permanently leave this lib out while this was a thing from 26-9=17 years ago!

The installation process was smoothed out however, I did not need to do

configure; make; make install

instead I only needed to execute

• apt install libdvd-pkg && dpkg-reconfigure libdvd-pkg
• watch the output

• When you own your library (physical books, CD's, DVD's) you need libdvdcss in order to play the latter

Packaging infrastructure is a problem much better solved by a standard package system built into the operating system and with strong policy for how packages work in the whole system, @projectgus.

Operating systems that lack such a well-integrated, policy-driven package system are worse for that.

I get my #Emacs packages by using #Debian and installing from the Debian archive, because I benefit from the strong standardisation and consistency with the rest of what's on my Debian workstation.

offlineimap3 cannot enter #debian testing because it fails to compile on s390x, which seems to be an IBM mainframe architecture from the 90’s.

I’m really curious how much #s390x computers still exist that are running the latest Debian…

prometheus (3.5.3+ds1-1) urgency=medium

The Prometheus Web UI has been completely disabled in this package. Upstream removed the Classic UI in v2.34.0. The newer React and Mantine UIs cannot be shipped because they require complex, pre-compiled toolchains (node-vite and rust-rolldown) that are not yet packaged in Debian and cannot be built offline.

Install `apt-listchanges` and update manually.

Linux n'est pas compliqué.
Par contre, il y a du choix, plusieurs manières de faire. C'est une de ses grandes forces mais forcément ça perd les novices.
D'ailleurs, si on installe une Debian, les choix par défaut conviennent (généralement).
Linux à l'air plus complexe parce qu'une installation inclus l'OS, les drivers, et les applications. Idem pour les mises à jours. C'est bien plus simple qu'avec Windows.

Can someone explain me why when you try to store the output of a printf into a variable in the shell it just doesn't store the newline at the end? It will store any other newlines but if the newline is at the end it will just not store it in the variable.

It's been roughly a year since I switched three production servers to btrfs from zfs. No issues at all, less ram consumption, slightly quicker performance on backups, and no dkms rebuilding shyze when major upgrades come out. Pretty awesome. #btrfs #sysadmin #Linux #Debian #zfs

I need help to have working screen sharing on my #debian laptop inside a #videoconference tab in #firefox or #chrome.
I'm sure it broke since I switched to #Sway on #Wayland.
I'm not sure if the browsers run natively or with Xwayland (they are not listed in `xlsclients`)

I'm still blown away how flexible Debian is. I love the zen of GNOME, but I can just as easily put any other desktop environment on it and it's just as rock solid stable.

I'm itching to start using a new #distro. As a recent #Linux user '#Mint' since a few months ago, I started to feel the urge to try a new distro with a new #DE. I have in mind to try #Debian with #Gnome.

My search said Debian is community-driven, their #governance is #decentralised, #democratic, and more aligned with #FOSS values than other distros out there.

If I want the same values, I should choose #KDEPLASMA. But, I really don't want to currently. I'm finding myself curious about Gnome ATM. I'm in despair if my combination is fit. 😅

Having been on a blissful vacation, I have now resorted to never contribute to a #GenAI / #LLM friendly project again outside of working hours (and that only as far as I work for an #AIpilled company so I have to do it anyway)

Which means it's probably the beginning of the end for my #Fedora involvement - I have high hopes for #Guix adopting a near-ban in the near future, and hopefully #Debian too

Today I learned that there are some proprietary components in #Linux #distros. I learned the deep stuff like firmware is no escape. But there are some distros who will include #proprietary stuff for workflow.

I checked my #Mint and there was nothing, or at least the check told me, I'm as #FOSS as if I'd be on #Debian. This made me relax a bit.

But also learned that Debian gives a priority to Foss stuff more than any distro out there. That's a nice thing to know.

Maybe @yifei could update us about the status of #DeltaChat in #Debian? I can see that it's on salsa [1], and I see a wishlist item for the #DeltaTouch client [2], including a comment about #LibDeltaChat being prepared for Debian. Debianisation will be one step in making DeltaChat more mainstream.

It boots but the last message on the screen is:

SGX disabled by BIOS

And then it hangs and doesn't go any further. From the research I have done, the SGX is a warning and not the cause of the freeze. Something else is, but that doesn't get a message on the screen.

Anybody else run into this issue with Debian or Devuan based Linux distros ?

I have been using aptitude since forever. Today, however, I needed to search through installed packages and remembered just how unintuitive the syntax is!

A few articles deep I learnt that good old apt-get has a new API through apt and it appears to be designed for clarity and ease of use. Should I switch?

Which tool do you use? If there is a specific reason besides habit I would be very curious to hear it!

Just a heads up that this was delayed due to a foot injury that went from okay to terrible very quickly. We are resuming this project today and it should take roughly 48-72 hours to complete.

✍️ Starting today at 5pm UTC-06/7, the following instances will go down for maintenance:

1) gnulinux.studio
2) gnulinux.media

👀 This maintenance will reduce total core consumption on the host by 8 vCPUs and reduce RAM usage by 16GB. Furthermore, these instances will switch from testing to production usage and public availability.

‼️It is expected that this transition should only take 6-12 hours, however, it could take as long as 72 hours if DNS caching gets delayed. Prepare for down time accordingly.
