Ideen?

Replacing Systemd with OpenRC in Debian
Starting the week with a good deed — to myself!
Liked to have the latest #jabberEl 0.11.1 on #Debian 13 #trixie stable, so I uploaded it to #backports.
Should be installable in a few hours:
$ sudo apt install -t trixie-backports elpa-jabber
At this point, using #Jabber/#XMPP or other free and federated IMs is the second best thing we can do against #ChatControl in the #EU. The best is to write to our #MEPs before Wednesday. Do both!

Cool seeing performance improvements for #Linux kernel. But at the same time I guess I won't get the benefit for something like 2+ years running a LTS #Debian.

The feeling today:
When ChromeOs says one thing, but the Debian community says another.
(In fairness, the keyword in the warning is "supported", and I have actually heard nice things about Linux on ChromeOS, where it is supported.)
@itsfoss well, it’s more like a life path. I started out with Alpine (very lean but hard to configure), tried Ubuntu (too much of a walled garden feeling), Manjaro (sexy, but breaks with almost every update) and finally settled on Debian. Boring, stable, dependable.
Tried some others as well (one night stands) but all just too short to make an impression.
How old is the #debian installation on my NAS? Well, I upgraded to "new" stable and cleaned out untold numbers of kernels today, but I did keep the oldest one...

I moved to #Debian testing (#forky) recently after #Ubuntu started to get weird.
I was prepared to deal with "there may be the occasional bug". OK, someone has to test and since I am not using it for business, I'll manage.
What caught me by surprise: some packages simply don't exist, not even in an older version, because they are blocked.
No complaints, I'll manage, just surprised and a warning to others.
Nevertheless, if there is a way to install older versions for such cases, let me know.

Summary:
Total cost: $40 on sale, plus about 4 hours of effort.
At my hourly rate that's...way too expensive, really.
I should have just bought a Tuxedo with Linux pre-installed. I would have saved time (and time is sometimes money) and gotten better hardware.
But it works!
Some lessons learned:
+ Google really doesn't want to allow booting a custom OS. There's lots of boot level "security". I am too annoyed to comment fairly, but considering that step one was to wipe all data, the words "security theater" come to mind for all of the crap that followed.
+ Linux Mint either doesn't work here, or got very unlucky.
+ Arch Linux stills scares me.
+ Ol' reliable: Debian brings home the win!
Of course - building great operating systems is a collaboration, not a competition. (But Debian wins, anyway, tonight.)

Check it out😎

@rl_dane @adamhavelka #debian lacks the resources to replace or fork the "slop projects" such as the Linux kernel. There isn't much that can be done at the distro layer.
I don't know of the specifics, but if it's anything like previous #Debian controversies, I'm sure it's been talked to death and then the folks with deepest corporate pockets eventually win anyway.

#Debian LTS contributors released 56 DLAs fixing 877 CVEs in May, a larger number than usual. The Kernel team deserves a special mention for handling the disclosed vulnerabilities on #linux regarding Local Privilege Escalation with public proof-of-concept exploits. On the LTS side, the Front Desk team also triaged a significant flow of high severity CVEs and notable security updates were released for exim, gnutls28, krb5, lemonldap-ng, imagemagick, openjdk-11, openjdk-17, php7.4, python3.9 and more.
Several patches were prepared by Catalyst for #Samba 4.17 shipped with Debian 12, to fix vulnerabilities disclosed in May, thanks to Freexian's partnership with them to extend the support.
LTS team also contributed with updates to the latest Debian releases, #bookworm and #trixie.

Following on from a recent conversation with @rl_dane about running Joy+Horton #vi in one of its three (sic!) 'open' modes on a paper terminal:
I decided to see whether any modern #termcap or #terminfo database actually had any settings anywhere for switching dot matrix printers between near-letter, draft, and letter quality modes.
#Illumos, #OpenBSD, #Debian, and #NetBSD all use the Dickey terminfo.src. #FreeBSD is the only one maintaining a different database. It is still maintaining the old BSD termcap file, in 2026.
Neither of the databases have sdrfq/snlq/snrmq or ZG/ZL/ZK capabilities in any record.
This stuff exists solely as words on a manual page (and reprints of the same in various books) and a single Usenet post by Oliver Okrongli in 1994. It's not even in the O'Reilly termcap+terminfo book.
We should prune such stuff that apparently has never really existed.
It's a pretty good n00b distro, honestly.
But #Debian has the same problem, even moreso as even the grub font is tiny.

Chapter 3 of my thesis, “Software Obsolescence: Analysis and Remediation Strategies” is devoted to analyzing maintenance in @debian. In it, I discover that maintenance is a collective socio-technical process that extends far beyond #Debian, into the broader ecosystem of free software and the global digital infrastructure. It teaches us a different way of thinking about changes and updates to computer systems—one that is centered on the people affected by them.
That thing when a string of events collide to create an emergency. Always a head-scratcher. Luckily we were a team of three figuring it out, between us we got their quite quickly. If anyone has any ideas or has seen similar behaviour from #NGINX / #FUSE I'd love to hear from you:

At this point, my main reason for recommending #Fedora over #Debian is that both grub and the LUKS prompt are graphical, rather in teensy text mode. Also, Fedora lets you re-attempt the LUKS password more times before pooping you into an inscrutable (for newbies) grub recovery mode.
That may sound incredibly trivial to an old neckbeard like myself, but it's a huge difference for newbies.
I'm also now investigating #NixBook OS for newbie recommendations. I'm not in love with Nix as a distro, but massive props to @codemonkeymike for all of his efforts, in both creating that OS spin, and in serving his community by providing free laptops rescued from e-waste. That's honestly heroic shiz, may-un. ;)

Question for Linux / Apple fans:
I'm considering buying an Apple Neo, to dual boot Linux Mint #Debian Edition on it.
Are there any specific concerns with using #Apple Silicon? Am I restricted in the #Linux distros and available packages?
I like the price point of the Apple Neo, and the fact that it comes loaded with creative tools, which I use heavily. For example, I have yet to find a #videoEditing tool for Linux, comparable to #iMovie. Also, Apple devices are elegant in #design and rugged in construction.
Am I better off buying a generic laptop instead? Recommendations are welcome!

I think I’m going to set up #Debian now. I have a huge problem with some packages conflicting and refusing to build on Arch, hindering the system update. Not cool and will take too much time to resolve for something that shouldn’t’ve even happened. I need a really boring system to base things off, as I care about software and ideas (and ed(1),) and not about drivers and systemd whatever. I just want something that is guaranteed to stay out of my way. So yeah, it’s a values decision.
I am also considering #Guix, but the stance on non-free software and the dire gaming situation is somewhat disincentivizing. No systemd and lack of slop though. Can I install Shepherd on Debian? Is Devuan a good distro? Is SysV too vaporwave with kids these days?
#Plan9 sounds fun too, especially for running in a container on a more secure system.
Come on by just chilling and spinning different tracks! No talking, but chat is open.

Debian 12 Bookworm Moves to LTS, Extending Security Support to 2028

Anybody have experience repairing the Macbook chiclet keyboards? I have a Macbook A1534 that is a nifty little accessory. It's amazing how peppy and useful it is, like 11 years old (now that it's running #debian).
Anyways, the space bar on the keyboard is borked. It works about half the time. My best description is that it's not springing back up to the right high point when I press it. It kinda goes down and stays down. If I press fairly hard, it registers a space. With an external keyboard and mouse, this thing is great. Works perfectly. But with the space bar being wonky, it's hard to use on its own. Here's some photos. Anyone have tips on what I might do to repair/fix it?
I took it to a UBreakIFix place and (a) they say fixing it requires replacing the whole top plate, not just the keyboard, and (b) they can't get those any more. I would much rather fix the space bar than try to do open-heart surgery on a glued-together macbook.
Any suggestions, recommendations? Feel free to boost. Check replies before you reply, just to see if someone else already made the same suggestion.
@ploum I aligned with you on #Ubuntu having all kind annoying things like Snap. I prefer #LinuxMint ship with Cinnamon, easy to migrate Windows users on it. I would say the difference of LinuxMint over #Debian is
* Ubuntu deb versions so much more up to date than Debian stable
* That's helping on the software/hardware compatibility ( compatible deb, and more recent kernel supported )
For a stable system and long support #Debian is amazing

It does get me thinking of making a comparison before the XFCE and Cinnamon desktops.
For right now, I am am still using LMDE as my go to Linux distro to install for customers. It has been most reliable for me, along with some installs of Devuan with Cinnamon desktop.
(sorry, one more edit! 😁 like @SuperDicq@minidisk.tokyo and @whimsy pointed out, debian stable does not upgrade packages to newer versions, but only backports important (security?) fixes (hope I'm paraphrasing correctly); so that means we're safe until debian trixie's LTS ends in 2030 🙏 problem still remains for the longer run tho, but I'm stressing out a bit less for the time being! thanks everyone!)
okay, some big debian questions; so I'm using rsync daily to backup all my important stuff (both locally and to offsite)
my debian stable (trixie) has version 3.4.1, which is fine; but I don't want the newer, sloppified version..
so I wondered:
- can I tell my debian install to just keep this version forever? or will that break things sooner or later?
(to everyone explaining how to hold a package, yes thanks but I know that; my question is more like "can I do that forever without things breaking". but I understand the answer must be no 😅 maybe the question was more out of desperation; that clearly isn't the way to go in the long run.. a real solution must come from the debian team then =>)
- since debian tends to be pretty strict when it comes to stability (it's called debian stable after all), is there an active discussion going on, in the debian community, about how to deal with obviously sloppifying packages like rsync?
will debian maybe freeze them at the last non-sloppified version too somehow, so I don't have to deal with that?
surely, it can't be that obviously worse versions of packages go from debian experimental, through testing, to stable, right? 😬
I'm rather curious/puzzled/anxious how debian will handle cases like this, since there's bound to be a ton of them before long.
does anyone, someone more familiar with the debian community, have some insights on this process, and if this is being actively discussed? I really hope it is!
because this is going to be a massive, make or break, problem before long - it kinda already is, at least for me, a random user, who is worried their backups might start breaking soon 😬
btw. I understand I could switch from rsync to some forked version, and I probably will if the answer to my question is "no, there's little discussion, and they are going to let the sloppified packages trickle through the experimental => testing => stable chain"; but that only works around the problem for this specific package.
I don't have time to find slopfree alternatives to all of these hundreds of tools that exist in a standard debian installation..
or maybe, would debian at some point maybe switch to forked, non-sloppified versions of packages, and denote them the new defaults, and handle the upgrade in somewhat automated fashion?
I remember how mariadb became kind of the new standard mysql, after oracle acquired that. but of course that only works if there is a big enough community of hobbyist programmers to maintain these unslopped forks - if only for security fixes; I'd be happy enough if everything just stays mostly fixed in functionally from this point in time on.
questions, questions! sorry this got a bit long and winding. just worried about the future of linux. I'm sure we all are.
Is your organisation benefiting from #Debian? Are you using it on your infra, or as a base for your product, ...?
Do you know that sponsoring #Debconf is a great way to support the development of #Debian? Lots of things happen when Debian Developers are able to meet in real life. That's only possible with your contribution.
Even if you don't plan to be present this year in Argentina,
consider supporting #DC26: https://debconf26.debconf.org/sponsors/become-a-sponsor/.
Don't hesitate to reach out to sponsors _ at_ debconf.org.
I just realized: devs are asking package manages like npm and pip to have N quarantine days to new versions of packages. #Debian already have this: it's called testing :)
So why not helping packaging software for Debian?

Trying out #nvi-1.81.6 on #Debian as my primary editor on my work box for a bit.
At first, I was sad that I could no longer

Hmmm, the lack of line selection mode is a bummer. This might have more pain points than I was anticipating. XD
Maybe I should try #vim-tiny?

I guess since the whole "Flatpak creating a dependency on systemd" bullshit has surfaced this week there has been some other conversations about systemd going on throughout the Fediverse.
I've seen some oblique references to Debian making an effort to make OpenRC more viable as an alternate init system. That's about all I've gathered on my hit-n-run timeline surfing the last several days. Not sure if this is an official Debian project or just someone's wish list.
Anyone have the skinny? Links to actual discussions?

Can anyone explain to me why these commands result in adding the signal repository to your sources.list and adds their signing key to your keyring. When I tried to help my father do it, he only managed the former.
# 1. Install our official public software signing key:
wget -O- https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt/keys.asc | gpg --dearmor > signal-desktop-keyring.gpg;
cat signal-desktop-keyring.gpg | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg > /dev/null
# 2. Add our repository to your list of repositories:
wget -O signal-desktop.sources https://updates.signal.org/static/desktop/apt/signal-desktop.sources;
cat signal-desktop.sources | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-desktop.sources > /dev/null

For my shop machine, I'm now actively testing Debian 14 Testing w/ Xlibre and SonicDE. So far, so good. I use this machine for client work and it also gets to be my guinea pig for testing drawing tablet workflows. Both native Xlibre (via wacom) and Gaomon's proprietary driver work. I'm impressed with how snappy SonicDE is - first time using it today. Great work folks‼️

Did a little adventure migrating my Debian Forky box from the in-repo nvidia (v550) drivers to extrepo nvidia driver (v595) as a work around for the kernel 6.19.x -> 7.0.x thing.
Yeah, don't do that.
I think the Debian maintainers do a bunch of work to the in repo drivers to make them 'nicer' - things like working better in multi-head. At least with my system sddm worked better. Also, the 595 drivers max the CPU under Plasma and makes it unusable (load avg ~25 on i7-11700k).
I ended up rolling back to v550 and pinning the kernel version to 6.19 for now. I'm still stuck with waiting for OpenZFS 2.4.2 for this box as well.
Nvidia drivers sure do make a mess between the number of packages required (with extra spicy things like new and interesting package name differences between in-repo and extrepo!) and the whole kernel version to module building process is a chore. I really appreciate that the teams make this work repeatably - especially when I tried going backwards to 6.19 with 595.
Anyway, rolled totally back to kernel 6.19, nv 550 and everything works as it should including OpenZFS v2.4.1 on this kernel.
One annoyance along the way was rolling back to v550 caused a sddm login loop. Deleting ~/.local/share/kscreen fixes this. Appears to undo minimal desktop tweaks, probably less noticeable on a non-multi-head host.
Things you do to avoid housework. Ha.

37 Debian LTS advisories were released in February fixing 145 CVEs across various packages. These include security fixes for bind9, firefox-esr, imagemagick, libpng, mbedtls, openssh, packagekit, perl, postgresql-13, python3.9, systemd and many more.
Debian LTS contributors also prepared updates for more recent releases, Debian 12 (#bookworm), Debian 13 (#trixie) and Debian unstable.

The asterisk package in #Debian now has three grave security bugs filed on it. This is in addition to the 3-year-old serious bug to block it from entering testing... because nobody is willing to step up and commit to fixing security issues. I wonder how long until they just decide to yeet it from the repo altogether.
Dear Linux newbie, remember:
- It doesn't really matter what distro you install as long as it runs the software you really use
- There's no better distro, all are just different approaches (and most are actually forks)
- Whatever aesthetic feature (like a desktop environment, apps) you're basing decisions on, you can change it or tweak it later anyway
- Customizing stuff isn't mandatory, you can go with the defaults and still be a chad, chill
- Learn some Bash, watch some tutorials, try it on a VM. Don't just blame the OS every time
And remember: there's nothing wrong with asking for help or learning stuff. At least you don't need to pay for a subscription 🤷🏻♀
(If you ever wanna do that, just donate to the projects you like, not to a corporation 🎩)

So confused about this today, which I've never really though much about.
My #Linux #Mint 22.3 Cinnamon system wanted a kernel update this morning. It's got 6.17.0-29 on it now, and also gives me the option of installing 6.14.0-xx or 6.8.0-xx.
All of these of obsolete.
My Linux Mint #Debian Edition 7 system is running 6.12.88+deb13, which at least is part of the 6.12.x LTS kernel branch, but has itself also already been superceded by 6.18.x LTS.
Then I erased the flash drive again and put #LMDE 7 on it. Much prettier than the default #Debian trixie themes, but would I really be missing anything from LMDE 7 if I just went directly to Debian, other than the much nicer default aesthetics?
Now I wish I had a spare system to test this on, but other than the 2017 MacBook Pro, which I can't erase, I don't.
Advice appreciated! #Linux #LinuxMint

Interesting post. I would like to see a more in-depth objective review of package manager comparisons.
Sure, speed is great but highly subjective - what if the nearest mirror is several states away or located in a different country altogether?
Some of the ones I'd like to see are:
1.) Number of available packages a distro offers in its default repos.
2.) Package manager features. Can updates be rolled back (not just removed)? How frequently are packages updated? etc.
3.) Ease of configuring your own local mirror.
A note about #Homebrew:
I use it on my #Mac and it's worked flawlessly there for the past six years. But out of curiosity, when I tried it on #Debian, I had weird persistence issues after rebooting the machine. For example Homebrew itself would require reinstallation after reboots and any packages I installed just *disappeared* and needed to be reinstalled too.
Anyone else having difficulties applying 7.0.4+deb14-amd64 to a testing/forky host with Nvidia CPU?

Debian embraces reproducible builds
Big news from the Debian release team: Debian is going for reproducible package builds.
Aided by the efforts of the Reproducible Builds project, we've decided it's time to say that Debian must ship reproducible packages. Since yesterday, we have enabled our migration software to block migration of new packages that can't be reproduced or existing packages (in te

In the latest in a series of articles about Debusine, our developers and sysadmins do a deep dive on how they managed to investigate and fix #Debusine workflow performance issues caused by complex interactions between a series of database concurrency and worker communication issues.
It involved delicate work to avoid system deadlocks, optimizing our workflow orchestration, scheduling fixes, worker refactoring and reducing the high database write volume.
Read the detailed breakdown at https://www.freexian.com/blog/debusine-performance-issues/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social
That's because the repository on GitHub that #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, and Arch all download and use, is indeed named libcalqulate:
https://github.com/Qalculate/libqalculate
Debian's source package is also named libqalculate:
https://packages.debian.org/source/sid/libqalculate
Only #Debian is subdividing what gets built into multiple binary packages. Everyone else is doing a simple 1:1 between source and binary packages.
It's possible to have a 1:many relationship between source and binary packages in Arch pkgbuild, as well. In theory, Arch could also provide the same finer granularity that Debian does.
So the parting Debian Project Leader, Andreas Tille used a slop Machine for his public communication...
That explains a lot
He's currently presenting his reasoning in Hamburg and frankly if you think an LLM allows you to understand differnt cultures I have no fucking hope for you.
Edit: I should mention that imedatleywhen the QA part starte Holger Levsen gave push back on the LLM use.
If I don't forget I'll pust that segement up here as soon as the video hits the archives and I find time to make a clip.

## TIL about Ian Debian Murdock
### The sad story of legendary Ian Murdock
• Founded Debian in 1993 at age 20, while a Purdue undergrad
• Name "Debian" = Debra (his girlfriend) + Ian — she later became his wife
• Debian became the base for Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Raspberry Pi OS, hundreds of distros, arguably the most influential Linux project ever
• Worked at Sun Microsystems on Solaris
• Became Chief Operating System officer at Docker, right at the peak of container adoption
• Died December 28, 2015, age 42, officially ruled suicide
• His final hours: a series of distressed tweets describing a violent encounter with San Francisco police (claimed they beat him during an arrest), followed by increasingly erratic posts, then silence
• His Twitter account was deleted by the family shortly after; the tweets are preserved in archives
Debian is still going strong, 30+ years later, without him but his contributions can never be forgotten.
>Although Murdock's parents were both from Southern Indiana,[2] he was born in Konstanz, West Germany, on April 28, 1973, where his father was pursuing postdoctoral research. The family returned to the United States in 1975, and Murdock grew up in Lafayette, Indiana, beginning in 1977 when his father became a professor of entomology at Purdue University. Murdock graduated from Harrison High School in 1991,[3] and then earned his bachelor's degree in computer science from Purdue in 1996.
>While a college student, Murdock founded the Debian project in August 1993, and wrote the Debian Manifesto in January 1994. Murdock conceived Debian as a Linux distribution that embraced open design, contributions, and support from the free software community. He named Debian after his then-girlfriend (later wife) Debra Lynn Roundy, and himself.[4] They later married, had three children, and divorced in January 2008.[5]
>In January 2006, Murdock was appointed Chief Technology Officer of the Free Standards Group and elected chair of the Linux Standard Base workgroup.[6] He continued as CTO of the Linux Foundation when the group was formed from the merger of the Free Standards Group and Open Source Development Labs
>Murdock died on December 28, 2015, in San Francisco.[12][13][14] Though initially no cause of death was released,[15][16] in July 2016 it was announced his death had been ruled a suicide.[17][18] The police confirmed that the cause of death was due to asphyxiation caused by hanging himself with a vacuum cleaner electrical cord.[19][20]
>The last tweets from Murdock's Twitter account first announced that he would commit suicide, then said he would not. He reported having been accused of assault on a police officer after having been himself assaulted and sexually humiliated[21] by the police, then declared an intent to devote his life to opposing police abuse. His Twitter account was taken down shortly afterwards.[22][23]
>The San Francisco police confirmed he was detained, saying he matched the description in a reported attempted break-in and that he appeared to be drunk.[24][25] The police stated that he became violent and was ultimately taken to jail on suspicion of four misdemeanor counts. They added that he did not appear to be suicidal and was medically examined prior to release. Later, police returned on reports of a possible suicide. The city medical examiner's office confirmed Murdock was found dead.[26][27]
>The autopsy report noted extensive bruise marks found on Murdock's body, and a medical history of alcohol abuse, psychological disorders and Asperger syndrome.[28][17]

RE: https://exquisite.social/@thomholwerda/116535458295130039
Ok, so this thread (read it on) changed my views on #Devuan.
And here I was thinking that it was the good version of #Debian, done without systemd etc. Instead, I think I will look for more #AlpineLinux systems to deploy
When I set up this Debian box with ZFS I tried setting up ZFS swap to see how it worked. There were warnings in the OpenZFS docs but I gave it a go anyway.
The system is configured with two fast NVME connected to the CPU and mirrored for the root pool. Swap was created as part of the rpool.
It's a bad configuration. After a number of hours the load average consistently heads into the high teens or higher. Turning off swap makes it drop immediately to ~1.0 (typical for this box running a desktop and futzing around in browsers and shells).
As far as I can tell it's not possible to resize a ZFS partition in situ so I added the swap partition on the third NVME that is formatted EXT4 (south bridge x4).
Not ideal but it is perfectly serviceable.
NVME drives are so fast, would I really notice a difference by the seat of the pants with the swap on partitions on the north bridge connected mirrored devices? Probably not.
Leaving sleeping dragons for now.
They've got the classic debian swirl color, but I don't know of anything else. Of course, #Debian doesn't actually theme anything, a decision I can definitely respect. Still, there's the debian-themed boot screens which are vaguely... bluish?
Funny aside, the original debian swirl logo (and the genie's lamp, a variant that isn't seen often) was created in Adobe Illustrator in the late 90s, using pretty default settings of one of AI's tools. I don't remember where, but I read a write-up on that recently.
It's ironic that a FOSS OS's logo was created with such a proprietary tool, but this would've been in the 90s, and Inkscape wasn't quite a thing yet.
Niggle that is hard to research...
For anyone running Debian Testing (Forky) and using Waterfox, some video will not play due to Waterfox 6.6.12 not being compatible with ffmpeg v8. It is expecting v7 and I guess there are some videos where the video won't start due to switches, params, or whatever.
My use case was an old Youtube video that I snarfed many years ago and had on my Jellyfin server.
[ Stream #0:0[0x1](und): Video: h264 (Main) (avc1 / 0x31637661), yuv420p(progressive), 854x480, 1100 kb/s, 25 fps, 25 tbr, 90k tbn (default) ]
Waterfox (v6.6.12) won't play it but Librewolf (150.0.1-1) does. Both are installed from PPA, not flatpak.
Forky currently has: ffmpeg/testing,now 7:8.1-3+b1
New stuff plays fine so I hadn't noticed it since ~Wednesday when this box was re-imaged and moved into.
Apparently the Waterfox flatpak doesn't have this problem (probably has it's own ffmpeg v7 bundled inside or has a flatpak ffmpeg dependency).
I could get into the weeds further to confirm but Librewolf works for now. I'll wait for Waterfox to work through it. 🙂

@thomholwerda #Debian. I've been using it for literally 30 years. In all that time, it has remained community-owned, with assets held by a non-profit. Its founding documents say that the priorities are its users and Free Software. I personally have used it for everything from large-scale deployments, Rasberry Pis. Its policy of backporting security fixes means things like automated security patches are much more practical than with rolling releases.
If you're seeing articles about #chrome like https://www.thatprivacyguy.com/blog/chrome-silent-nano-install/, just be aware that #chromium in #debian (and #UngoogledChromium) removes this garbage (https://github.com/ungoogled-software/ungoogled-chromium/pull/3676). Stuff like this is why I don't think the answer to "how do I get the latest software in my distribution" is not "Just use a flatpak/snap! Upstream Knows Best!™ "
Anyone else having issues connecting to the Debian wiki? I get the initial anti AI screen or whatever it is and then it gives me a "Forbidden" page.
Accessing via VPN works but from my normal Bell CGNAT IP does not. It's not a 403, just a text pages saying Forbidden.
Did the Debian admins block Bell Canada residential IP ranges by mistake?
After a bunch of futzing around the machine is back on Debian (testing) with zfs root.
Sometimes you just have to stop swimming against the current and go with the warm fuzzies. For now.
Recently I got asked about my @BoxyBSD@bsd.cafe project, which offers free VPS instances of vary #BSD based systems for learning and educational purposes and I'm happy to share that this projects remains available. Several things could finally be clarified to continue this service to make sure people can learn and practice on real #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD systems to #RUNBSD. Also, BoxyBSD starts moving over to #Sylve on #bhyve.
But not only that! We could also get some more new resources and locations to scale and this also brings up another new project for #free Linux #VPS instances at https://boxedtux.com (Fedi: @BoxedTux@mastodon.social) where people will be able to learn and practice on different #Linux based distributions (e.g., #Debian, #Ubuntu, #Rocky,...). BoxedTux utilizes #Proxmox clusters as a foundation.
Hope you like this small update... Over & out!

If you use #Linux and are using a #Debian or #Ubuntu based distro, one thing I would recommend for installing .deb files (ones you download from outside your repos), is to install "gdebi" and use that to open and install your .deb packages instead of your "Software Center". Reason being, "gdebi", before it actually installs anything, lets you browse the contents of the package, read the contents of control files like postinst, etc. to make sure it isn't doing anything shady.
Given that "AI" contributions are likely based on stolen code whose provenance cannot be verified, does that mean projects featuring such contributions would no longer be compliant with the DFSG and those packages would need to be removed from #Debian?

Butterbian
Butterbian is a Debian 13 (Trixie) installer built around one idea: your system should be snapshotted before anything breaks it. Most distros leave BTRFS and Timeshift as an exercise for the user. Butterbian does it for you — subvolumes laid out correctly, Timeshift configured, grub-btrfs wired in, so you can roll back from GRUB if it all goes sideways.

Lemme rephrase that:
I miss the days when distros used the 2.6.x kernel. Maybe someone around here will just call me a cranky old curmudgeon, but things did seem simpler back then.
The opaque undocumented userland sprawl is a problem, with the operative word being "undocumented."
RE: Arch Wiki
Yes, as good as it is it's still not proper HOWTO or understandable, (vetted) documentation. The *one* thing that has me gravitating towards #FreeBSD is documentation is a first class feature. It makes the OS a lot more transparent and understandable. I'm sure that's also the case for #NetBSD and #OpenBSD but I don't use them.
This laptop runs #Ubuntu. While it is a #Debian derivative, it's opaque. While there is more documentation available on Ubuntu's website, it's nowhere near as thorough and empathetic as it needs to be. I shouldn't have to visit another distro's wiki just to research info about a different distro on an OEM laptop. That, to me, is unacceptable.

Hey Fedipeeps, is Debian an okay choice for modern desktops?
Does it still have ancient versions of programmes on the repos?
Does it at least allow Flatpak for up to date software?
Can one play Steam and games on it with nvidia drivers?
Does it support two monitors?
What are the downsides?
Ubuntu going ai is making my skin crawl..
What are the sane distros going forward?
MX Linux is a fine debian derivatives with a dev by the name anticapitalista on the core team.
Anticapitalista runs another debian derivative antiX which they brand officially as anti-fascist.
Just saying if your looking for #Debian or #Ubuntu alternatives, or distros where systemd is optional they might be worth checking out.
Recently I switched from Wayland to X11 because some Electron-based apps are having severe graphics issues that X tends to clear up. It's mostly Signal. I gave up on Slack long ago, though I bet running X would fix that, too.
But since logging in with X11, suspend/resume is broken, and I keep this desktop suspended a LOT of the time. I'm now back on Wayland. Let's see if that resolves it.
@jameshowell I never understood why people prefer #ubuntu over #debian. I hear that the installer is still better. This is not #windows, you use the installer ONCE! Even if Debian's should be inferior, you get a system with much less crap forced down your throat.
Speaking as someone who uses several Debian servers, laptops, utility machines for fun and production.
Somebody on YouTube posted “DEBIAN 13: I could actually use it as my desktop, now!”
Heh. I've been using #Debian on desktop since version 1.2. Or maybe 1.1. I forget.
The now-famous #Debian spiral logo came out several years after I started using it. I was quite excited when I saw the announcement of the new logo!
As I recall, the Debian logo when I got started was just “Debian” on top of a grid of black lines.

The Devuan installers are also not Linux newbie friendly, but I really like the TUI based Devuan Server installer and then choose a desktop environment as one of the last steps.
I chose Devuan because I am interested in not having SystemD.
Debian is also good, but for ease of use and installation I would usually recommend Linux Mint Debian Edition to a Linux Newbie would wants to run Debian.
So I am guessing the reason is that some Debian derivatives have an an installer that is easier to use and understand than Debian itself.

In terms of what I use most of the time, my main OS at home is #FreeBSD, and my main OS at work is #Debian.
I also have an #OpenBSD laptop at home, but it doesn't get a lot of use. I also have a #Fedora laptop and an #OpenSuSE desktop, both at home.
Oh, and some random Raspberry Pi OS and Debian machines here and there.
Here's my quick perspective:
When Linux works (which it does most of the time), it is a dream. When it doesn't work, it's a nightmare of complexity, relatively poor documentation (I mean actual HOWTO documents, not just manpages and wikis), and technical churn.
When BSD works (which it does, but less often than Linux), it's totally fine, and you forget you're not running Linux. When it doesn't work, it's either because it's a technical problem that hasn't been solved yet (limited resources compared to the light-cigars-with-benjamins money that the Linux Foundation gets), or it's a simple configuration issue, and there's almost always a very helpful manpage, PDF manual, or someone on the fediverse to point you in the right direction.
BSD feels like an operating system that tries hard to be a good desktop, and succeeds to varying degrees.
Linux feels like a lovecraftian tale of runaway technical complexity and corporate intrigue that does an amazing job at cosplaying as a desktop, most of the time.
I love them both.

Update: #OpenSuse Tumbleweed handled it! So much for dunking on YaST, guys, it's the bomb!!!
Also, as much as I enjoy dunking on the systemd empire, systemd-boot is good (compared to grub, at least). ;)
#LUKS is gonna drive me mad.
This is on a brand new #Debian install. All I'm trying to do is have my home partition encrypted on a second SSD. No matter what I try, I get an unbootable system or it just ignores the second SSD. Right now, the last thing I tried to do was to use LVM to add the second SSD as a physical partition. But that didn't work either.
The last thing I tried was to boot into the graphical installer (not the live session) and install it with the guided partitioning using LVM and encryption. I then booted into a live session, Set up the second SSD as a physical volume and then add that physical volume to the main volume group. I then extended the swap and root partition into the new space provided by the second SSD as physical volume, but it doesn't boot.
Are there any distros that handle this automatically? I'm tired of pulling my hair out.

The Discover app looks quite promising. However, when I click to install an app from the apps.kde.org website, it opens the Discover app but I get this error:
"could not open appstream://org.kde.discover.desktop because it was not found in any available software repositories"
I am not sure how to add the KDE apps website to the Discover repositories.
Is this a common error? Or do you think it is Debian or Devuan specific error? I haven't yet tried on my Artix Linux installation, as that is currently in a different location.
"[ifupdown]-ng has a cleaner architecture but switching would require
[ifupdown]-ng factually being a drop-in replacement [for ifupdown]."
Why? Why does everything have to be bug-for-bug compatible going back 30 years? You're allowed to make some format changes as long as there's an effective migration strategy. Especially given that it would erase mountains of technical debt.
Eh ben, y'en a eu du chemin de fait, depuis ce pouet...

I was asked many times over the last years which Linux distribution I would recommend for beginners. I always answered that they should try out multiple ones and choose the one that they like the most.

I will be putting #LinuxMint #Debian Edition, as that is what I have been doing for the last couple years.
Have been doing research on other distros and Desktop Environments. May switch to distro without SystemD and switch to KDE for customers... but haven't gotten something in place that I feel as confident in "just working" and me being able to support.

https://github.com/ivfrost/joplin-adwaita-theme
Il y a des gens qui sauraient me guider ou même juste me fournir le paquet à installer tel quel ? 🙏
@g5maniac if you're experienced enough, it is. I have been running Sid for decades and I think only once got into a situation that was only solved by downloading an old version from snapshot.d.o, unpack it, extract a .so file and use the still running broken machine's staticly built busybox (which I always have installed) and a USB stick to copy over the broken one.
Nowadays the most I have to do is to hold packages in their current versions because a transition in happening.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS raises its desktop minimum RAM to 6 GB, up from 4 GB in 24.04, while Windows 11 still lists 4 GB. Canonical’s update reflects practical memory needs under GNOME, whereas Windows’ TPM requirement implies most systems already exceed the minimum 💻
