I handed over maintainership some years back when I considered it "done". I wish we'd more often consider software "done". The new maintainers did some good things; it eventually had to be ported to Python 3, for instance.

I use SIP, too — for calls to/from POTS! Both Ekiga and Linphone were pretty good, but got dropped from #Debian 😞 Now I use Twinkle and will try Gnome Calls, again.
TTBOMK, #Monal by @Monal used to have one or the other known issue with A/V calls. Sth. with timing, IIRC? Maybe it's fixed now.

Looks like the USB-C hub is now working on my DAW. When I rearranged my studio I needed a longer 20 foot USB-C male-to-female cable. Plugged it into the same Thunderbolt 3 port and...nothing.
This morning, I tested the hub on my #Debian laptop with that same cable. It works fine. I tested another 20 foot cable on the laptop with the hub. It works fine. Tested that short cable on the same Thunderbolt 3 port. it works fine. Then, I tested that longer cable on a different #Thunderbolt 3 port. Whaddya know? It works fine.
This is a head scratcher. The ports and cables are fine but for whatever reason #MacOS doesn't recognize the hub *at all* with that one cable in that one port...even though that was the same port I used before I rearranged the #studio.
No changes to the OS were made. The only difference is that cable.
This is bizarre.
If the RPC protocol is clearly specified, there could even be different backends in C, Rust, …
Still, to me the great strength of #TRAMP is, that it does not need any special server, but runs on commodity protocols like SSH. And the greatest weakness for me is not its slowness, but it's lack of robustness in error conditions.
If the RPC approach improves not only speed, but also its stability, that would be awesome. (TODO: package #emacs-tramp-rpc for #Debian.)
I am going to do a writeup on the #Freedombox #Debian blend (I've inaccurately calling it a 'spin', heh) for my blog. It's been an interesting year+ with hosting and self-hosting. #Proxmox continues to dominate my personal and work installations.
I also want to do a write up about Netbird, but think I need to mess a little more with HeadScale and Nebula before that. VM backups (like X TB worth) to a server behind a restrictive FW seems to be the hardest part for these mesh/vpns to get and stay working reliably. But overall I already can't imagine my life without Netbird, it's so nice to have a GUI for private network allow/deny rules and just letting go of having to route everything through firewall port forwarding.

The next #Debian release is codenamed "Duke". The namesake Toy Story character:
Duke Caboom (voiced by Keanu Reeves) is an amiable Canadian daredevil toy with a white outfit, a horseshoe mustache, and a toy motorcycle. He suffers from low self-esteem due to believing that he let down his previous owner Rejean, unable to do the stunts that his commercial ads had promised. Duke Caboom is a parody of the Evel Knievel Rally Stunt Cycle by the Ideal Toy Company.

#Debian 13 #trixie stable has #ejabberd 24.12.
In case it is affected, I hope, there will be a patched version in time.
EDIT: It has been pointed out to me, that the problem is not as severe as it might sound. Connections to servers with s2s dialback will continue to work. I assume/hope, that most servers do have that mechanism enabled.

https://fosdem.org/2026/schedule/event/7FZXHF-updates_on_gnuhurd_progress_rump_drivers_64bit_smp_software_bootstrapping/
Presented by @samuel_thibault
I wonder how close #TheHurd is to becoming an official port of #Debian ? As I recall, many years ago, lack of a firewall system was a blocker.
Great talk by @samuel_thibault of #GNU #Hurd fame, in a packed room, selling the the Hurd really well (in my not entirely unbiased opinion, of course) and starting with
It's all about Freedom #0,
and also Freedom from the system administrator. We know all about that, isn't right #Guix folks?
And although @debian is really still carrying and championing the Hurd effort, plenty of attribution to the work of others, mentioning Guix at least three times!
I've been looking for a clean, #NoAI Markdown editor to replace Logseq. Logseq is great but has a lot of bloat that I don't need for simple writing (like my scripts). I tried MarkText and I enjoy it, but I just learned that it hasn't been updated in over a year with little to no activity on their github, which is a concern for security and longevity.
What are you all using for distraction free writing, especially for markdown?
I just did some cleanups of the sid-pgdg suite on apt.postgresql.org, removing some very old extension packages for postgresql-8.x. These were files from the very beginning of the archive in 2011. It's been a while... 🐘 #postgresql #debian

I suspect #openzfsmastery might need to assume root on extFS and data on ZFS, leaving root-on-ZFS for the advanced user or a terminal chapter.

But I need options that will work on #Debian #Linux . Options other than #LibreOffice because that's too expansive. I just need a proper DTP tool with the ease of #QuarkXPress . Suggestions, please!
GUIs are very nice yes, but nothing makes you feel quite as powerful as a successfully chained command line pipeline.
For example, taking a massive log file and filtering it through cat | grep | awk | sort | uniq -c to find the exact problem in seconds is a form of wizardry that modern UI simply cannot replicate.
Sometimes I believe the pipe | might be the single greatest invention in computing history lol 😋

@shadowfals I do believe that Debian does pretty well, including that it has software speech support for the installer (and that is apparently the default since Debian 12, which would be about three years ago). https://wiki.debian.org/accessibility has a lot of details and there is also the section on accessibility in the stable release manual at https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch05s02

During the Debian install on my Tuxedo Infinitybook I did run into one weird thing: no network interfaces were detected at first. So I plugged in an old USB ethernet dongle known to work with linux since forever. Reran the installer. It now detected TWO network cards, including the WIFI adapter build in. Chose that and it just worked. Weird.
The onboard RJ45 ethernet port needs an extra driver that I still need to set up, so that was expected.
This all happended with the 13.3 DVD image put on an USB stick.
After some successful tests of running Debian13 with a backport 6.17.x kernel on my Tuxedo desktop system, it was time to try this on the Tuxedo laptop too.
The Tuxedo Infinitybook has a keyboard issue which apparently should be fixed in the 6.17.x en newer kernels. Getting that installed on Zorin proved more involved then anticipated.
So I now installed Debian 13 and will see how this works over the next weeks.
@Linux_in_a_Bit there is another point I would like to stress as versatile Linux user: the ergonomics are a catastrophe on Linux.
E.g., on #Debian you have to click on completely unrelated icons to find the Button for shutting down the machine. Some distros even disallow this and you need to be sudo to even have the possibility to achieve this. No one supports hibernation anymore. Every time I test a Debian derivative I have one WTF moment after the other.

Been seeing some new #Distros pop up that have more or less identical websites and make more or less identical claims about their respective #Linux setup.
They all claim to want to excel in all areas, leverage the power of #Arch / the stability of #Debian / the adjective of underlying distro, etc. They all claim to have community or collaboration at their core. They all claim security by design, performance first, and on it goes.
All of them use the same website theme, varying only in complexity and color choices, not overall appearance.
So… stop that? If you look a little deeper, some of them are actually doing something kinda interesting — elaborate custom theming on Gnome, custom installers, unusual choice of shell with customizations, weird kernel options, optimizations, better language integration for one language or another…
But from their respective websites, they look like they're all the same thing.

Unbefriedigend.
Matt Miller, Project Leader of #Fedora, gives a nice overview of what makes #distros valuable. This applies to any distro that actually reviews the packages that they ship, including #FDroid #Debian etc. Something like #Flathub or #Obtainium do not behave like distros because they do not aim to review and standardize the packages they ship.

(disclaimer: this opinion could perhaps have spent more time in the oven)
Over time the aspect of #Debian that has mattered to me most is the community, and how welcoming and awesome some of it is. This is something to be treasured.
On the other hand, this stands in stark contrast to the subtext of just about any intra-project communication I see now. We are not civil, kind, or patient with each other.
I think this is a serious problem. More so than most technical matters du jour.

So. "AI fun", in a different way. Within #debian I am part of the FTPMaster team. We are multiple (as you can see here: https://www.debian.org/intro/organization#ftpmaster ). One part of what we do is writing dak, the software that keeps the Debian archive running. And that recently got a commit authored with the help of AI.
I *dislike* AI. I took a nights sleep and thought about it, and today spoke up in our IRC channel, asking to not use AI for work on dak.
Well, obviously, we now have one in favour and one against AI usage. I *currently* see no useful way out. There may be one, but what is a middle ground between AI usage and no AI usage?

It's *finally* easy to get the latest version of an app. (Although outdated Apps are traditionally a #Debian/#Ubuntu problem.) Using them feels mostly native now.
But they are confusing: You can install an app twice!? The data path is different. And they're still not good with hardware: #Firefox didn't give me video acceleration recently.
Luckily, these last problems will probably be fixed soon.

@rysiek Have a look at the `ldns` utilities by @nlnetlabs (https://nlnetlabs.nl/projects/ldns/about/) or its replacement (but not yet with feature parity) `dnst` (https://nlnetlabs.nl/projects/domain/dnst/).
On #Debian, install `ldnsutils` and try `ldns-readzone` and `ldns-compare-zones`: https://nlnetlabs.nl/projects/ldns/documentation/
The PAM Duress is a module designed to allow users to generate 'duress' passwords that when used in place of their normal password will execute arbitrary scripts.
This functionality could be used to allow someone pressed to give a password under coercion to provide a password that grants access but in the background runs scripts to clean up sensitive data, close connections to other networks to limit lateral movement, and/or to send off a notification or alert (potentially one with detailed information like location, visible wifi hot-spots, a picture from the camera, a link to a stream from the microphone, etc). You could even spawn a process to remove the pam_duress module so the threat actor won't be able to see if the duress module was available.

Geekery: #linux #debian #X11 #xterm
In 2025 I switched back to original xterm.
I had previously been using alacritty for several years, after a period of looking for a term-em that actually did all the things I wanted and wasn't too much of a pain in configuration or RAM use.
And before that I used rxvt (or urxvt) for about two decades.
Why did I switch this time? Because I did a quick review of about 40 term-ems in the course of a week, and was utterly astonished to find that xterm had acquired all the features that I actually wanted to use.
In the same way that I care about the fuel-efficiency of a car more than whether it's nominally a standard motor or a non-plugin-hybrid, I don't care about whether or not the term-em takes advantage of the graphics coprocessor to do the job. Do letters show up real fast? Great, I don't care how they got there.
But I want to be able to specify the fonts that I like, not have strange boxes show up when someone writes their name in a non-roman character set, use a bunch of colors, not show me the scrollbar but always have scrolling available, and not have weird bugs.
Since xterm is the only term-em I can approximately guarantee everything has been tested against, a bug that shows up as a result of using a particular term-em is least likely to manifest with xterm. Pragmatics.
I would like to extend kudos to the authors of Terminology, a term-em which, on first run, pops up a slider and asks you to adjust it until the font size is comfortable. That's worthy of a Galactic Prize for Extremely Obvious Cleverness.

I have helped many people move from Windows to the Cinnamon desktop (Linux Mint default). The Debian base in the alternative LMDE release is much more stable and fewer big releases than the main Linux Mint that is based on Ubuntu.
Brilliant idea of systemd to apply sysctl settings from configuration files ignoring their folders and the Debian Kernel team to put defaults in a "/usr/lib/sysctl.d/50-default.conf" file.
Why 50 and not 00? I have all my settings in a "/etc/sysctl.d/10-custom.conf" file. One of them was mysteriously erased by those defaults in a file starting with a higher name hidden in the system files.
Now I understand why all configuration files are prefixed by "zzz".
Not sure about the domain name but this is a great writeup on how to use #Debian #Edu on #Incus https://docs-debian-edu-b1ae44b4761a2fc054c89a05c736a43aafc6b255c47dcfe.pages.debian.net/testing-debian-edu-with-incus.html

@js it's not dead if you're actually using it.
#XMPP - like #IRC & #BBS - continues to exist and thrive where it matters.
Sadly there's no #deb package for #TorBrowser / #Tor by #TorProject which makes it really inconvenient to distribute beyond "shove it into $HOME/.apps/TorBrowser/ and pray it doesn't break!"
So we had a problem on the mirrors for #debian #bookworm - appears the wrong stable #openpgp key got used to sign it. The one from #trixie was in use.
The "only" implication here is people who pin their debian sources to specific keys, their #apt will complain. That's annoying, which is why we fixed it just now, resigning using the correct key.
Mirrors already got triggered, updates should be visible soon.
In case anyone wants to run off yelling security problem: Nah. Stuff is (and was) still signed by two keys from us #ftpmaster - and it is the same people handling the stable keys for bookworm and trixie. So only the wrong one used, nothing more.
That was an enjoyable read. I had a #ThinkPad #L530 in 2013 for some school stuff. Once done, I blew away #Windows7 for #Debian. Almost* everything worked out of the box. Fast, stable, and reliable.
Had I not tripped over the power cable (and thus violently tearing apart the AC adapter plug and internal connection, I'd still have it.
I've seriously considered going for another ThinkPad but I have a handful of spare laptops at my disposal and my daily driver is a sweet #Dell #Latitude 5400 (also running Debian).
The only thing that didn't work was the red dot in the keyboard. Oddly, it was supported under #openSUSE.

I've built something useable. Maybe you need that, too.
#OpenBSD Clients with moonlight-qt
#proxmox hypervisor with libegl and #radeon GPU
#debian VMS with #virgl GPU in proxmox and sunshine streaming server
Now you can play your games running only on linux on OpenBSD. This also works good over the internet/VPN.
The actual intention was building remote desktop capable vms, because 3d Desktops (GNOME), high Display resolution, modern browsers and spice protocol dont give a smooth experience these days. This also works now.
#unigineheaven is at 99% native performance. The GPU is shareable to many VMS.
Can't wait to see how amdgpu native driver context passthrough is coming out when it's available.

Probably ist lmde wieder eine gute Mitte.

No one tells you just how much work goes into a small YouTube channel. For me, Terminal Tilt is a labor of love, but it is a massive undertaking:
Research and Writing: This is the largest portion. Not just diving into topics, but finding ones truly worth your time.
Filming and Privacy: I have chosen a "headless" approach (screen-only). It respects my privacy and helps me manage the workload, but it still requires a lot of setup.
Voiceovers: This is the hardest part for me. Managing social anxiety while recording is a constant hurdle, but it is one I am getting better at with every video.
Editing: I am currently spending 8–12 hours per video (since last video). As I learn more techniques, the complexity grows, but so does the quality.
The small Stuff: Learning GIMP for thumbnails and managing promotion. Those little things really do add up.
I am disabled and currently navigating the long road to SSDI approval. My goal is to grow Terminal Tilt into something sustainable, a way to support myself while advocating for ethical, #NoAI, and #deGoogled technology. I am taking this seriously and I am having a lot of fun building this.

I can say, however, that I've reunited with an "old friend" who is still in great shape. Before I get dozens of replies about it being insecure: in theory, it is, but it's not accessible from the outside. It's isolated within its own network and is only able to connect and fetch backups for 'extreme disaster recovery' (only at specific times, restricted by specific firewall rules). It served its purpose today, and tomorrow, it might be even more useful.

This problem means people on current #Debian or Debian-derived #Linux systems who have #Slack, #Keybase, or #Dropbox installed via the package manager (i.e., not a Snap) *are not getting updates* to those packages, including both functional and security updates.
Since Slack is an Electron app, i.e., it has an install of Chromium bundled into it, and Chromium gets regular security patches, the version of Slack they have certainly has security vulnerabilities in it.

#TechIsShitDispatch
It's been more than a year since #Debian #Linux deprecated the insecure #SHA1 hash algorithm in #APT repositories.
The #Keybase, #Slack, and #Dropbox repositories (I'm sure among others) are still using SHA1, and therefore for over a year they have not worked in Debian without changing the default APT policies to allow them.
I know Slack knows about this, because I told them. A year ago.
Why haven't they upgraded the security on their repository?
Seriously, wtf?

OK #FediFriends, time for more #recs pls for #Linux-y stuff… 🙏 (I’m temporarily ruling out #FreeBSD, soz #Beastie fans 👿)
what file manager do you like / prefer / use?
I’m very not-happy with #Nautilus (a.k.a. “Files” 🙄
)
– I swear it used to be good maybe a decade or two ago but now it feels like a babby’s first file manger with minimal configuration options 😤 (am I thinking of a different old file manger? possibly…? 🤔)
I’ve been toying around with different distros in VMs & find #Dolphin OK enough that I’ve installed it on my actual current-but-soon-to-be-ex #PopOS† install, but it’s from #KDE-land so doesn’t understand #GNOME light / dark mode & consistently blinds me… 🕶️
I’m enjoying #Debian 13 KDE atm, & it seems like it will probably support the old (beast) laptop I’m using for all things Linux
I think I found #Thunar OK when I was playing with an #XFCE install on something recently but really need to revisit it & I’m not sure that it’ll integrate well if I end up running KDE #Wayland rather than… well, XFCE 🤪 (or anything else GNOME-y)
so frens… what do y’all recommend? 👀
pls #boost4reach 🙏
^ FFS, stop naming stuff using actual existing words! you’re not helping anyone! 🤪

My wife dropped off a PC off from her work today. I'll image the system then upgrade it from #Windows10 to #Debian. When completed that will transform them from 100% Windows to 100% #Linux.
Creating a backup image and then getting to run in #VirtualBox will give me something to do over the break. They need an easily accessible backup in case they need something important from the PC.
Please recommend me a distro!

Recorded the last guitar parts. Did the solo like 20 times. When I initially worked out the solo it was at 167bpm. Now it's 175. And 2/4. And someone was watching me. I didn't really nail it but I'll pull a Quincy Jones with some cutting and pasting.
Very happy though that Sander, the other guitarist from @jeremy@mastodon.classicyou.nl, laid down some solid parts.
Now I gotta mix the whole lot. And do the vocals. It's going to be a busy weekend.

Habe mir #omarchy #Linux heruntergeladen. WAS?!!!?
Bin dann Einkaufen gefahren.

I'm going to do a series of blog posts after the #Vizio trial is over about my upgrade to my #NovaCustom laptop & a much newer #Debian & all the stuff I went through to make it happen.
I'm starting this thread simply to have a place to keep all my ideas about those posts publicly, in case they are immediately useful.
I suspect I won't have time to engage in replying on this thread until circa 2026-02-15, which is when I plan to start the blog posts.
TL;DR: it's going pretty good.
[ Solved, likely a #Coreboot bug, see downtread. ]
So, I'm now desperate: the only blocker for my @novacustom laptop to meet my computing requirements.
Hibernation (suspend-to-disk/deep sleep) to an encrypted partition *is* tricky, but the tricky part isn't the problem b/c (given logs) hibernate image is found during startup. Key error message is:

Library gets nuked every Monday at 3am.
Free Software that I rely on. One per day.
Day 9:
YunoHost
This is technically more of a distribution than an individual software. There's a portal, and a large volunteer packaging effort to create apps for it. And a large catalog of applications already packaged.
I definitely rely on it. So I'm counting it.
YunoHost is how I have Wordpress (which I've already mentioned) installed -- along with other software I haven't got to yet.
It is based on Debian Linux: a particular install with applications already configured to work on it, pretty close to "plug and play". It's like the packaging systems for Linux desktop systems -- but for the Internet.
It makes managing a web application site SO much easier. I decided to adopt it as the basis of my "virtual studio" instead of trying to write something new.

There's a lot of truth to that. I started using #Debian back when Sarge was released. Since then I've only come across at most three shops in my area which use Debian in their infrastructure. I live a stone's throw from the Boston/Cambridge area, one of the most tech-heavy regions in the US. Every other place that I've interviewed at used #Ubuntu LTS, #RHEL, or (yes) Solaris.
Their release cadence has improved significantly to a more predictable every 2ish years and they now have an LTS release.
On the topic of books, while it has been covered in #Linux #books, Debian-specific books are even more rare. At one point O'Reilly had a Debian book and it was already outdated by the time it was released.
Which leads me to another question: given the lack of documentation in Debian is buying an Ubuntu book a reliable way of learning it? I am not sure if there's a straight answer.

This right here, but...
It's important to understand Debian's culture. A solid description is it's the bazaar from Eric Raymond's "The Cathedral and The Bazaar." There is a strong emphasis on #decentralization over #cohesion and a strong #resistance to a top-down structure and #authority. Culturally, the devs and maintainers consider #code primary and #documentation a nice to have but not essential. Furthermore, there are no enforced documentation standards. With such decentralization and full autonomy from devs and maintainers, the end result is thousands of people doing whatever they want and documenting however they see fit. #Debian #developers also assume a high degree of #technical #competency from whoever uses it.
Concerning the Debian Wiki, there is no editor-in-chief nor any ownership and a reflection of its culture. The attitude is "if you want something better, be the one to do it." The #quality of articles varies wildly, from chicken scratch notes to a walk through.
With so much #resistance to authority and change, improving documentation is a real #challenge. That being said, the simplest solutions at the moment are:
1.) Adopt the Debian Administrator's Handbook and collaboratively maintain it.
2.) Improve the wiki by adding templates and freshness tags.
The organization, culture, and project are honestly so fascinating. Honestly, it blows me away that one of THE most #influential operating systems ever functions in such a beautifully chaotic way. I mean, it has hundreds of derivatives and forks under it including #Ubuntu and #Mint (which are incredibly successful on their own). It's paradoxical that something that large and influential has barely any coverage. People don't write books on Debian but there are plenty for #RHEL and Ubuntu. Heck, there are more books on #FreeBSD at this very moment than Debian....which also further gatekeeps the knowledge from people.
But....it's important to understand why and what Debian actually is. I use my operating systems to cars analogy. RHEL, Ubuntu, #SUSE are all like going to different dealerships and buying a #car. All commercial off the shelf products. Debian is like skipping the dealership and buying the car kit from which you build your own. It's so much more than the "DIY hacker distro" but a powerful #development base for #tech #projects. Not unlike building a Go-Kart, a monstrous 6x6 truck, or a sports car. It's #flexible, #powerful, and can be tailored to one's needs. But, like a car kit, there's no glossy manual, just #technical specs.
It assumes you know what you are doing or that you are willing to get your hands dirty to learn.
When viewed from this perspective, it makes sense why documentation is the way it is. I'm not saying it's right but for its documentation to be improved to being on par with other OSes it would require a massive organizational shift to being a centralized #cathedral.

After further #troubleshooting and #testing, I switched back from #UEFI to #BIOS and was able to set the USB optical drive as the primary boot device. I grabbed my trusty #Debian 13 netinstall and away I went!
Well, I didn't get *too* far. Hell, I didn't even get off the runway. The #laptop complained about a missing hard drive. Oh boy. I acknowledged the error and proceeded. The Debian installer displayed the initial menu. I chose "Install" and KA-POW! It failed miserably with this error.
So, in conclusion two things are true:
1.) This laptop has officially kicked the bucket.
2.) I like pain.
For decades, #Debian has been my go-to for #Linux and operating systems in general. It's thoroughly tested, stability is rock solid, sane, and it stays out of the way. The #community, the Social Contract, the #transparency of the organization, and their #commitment to #diversity are also important reasons why I use it.
One of the longtime challenges I've had with it, however, is documentation. It is outdated and spotty. Finding information often requires #clairvoyance, digging through the #Internet, scattered wikis, old mailing lists, forums, and blog posts. It makes solving problems needlessly difficult. For this reason I have been leaning towards #FreeBSD. Technical and philosophical Differences aside, FreeBSD's documentation is excellent. The FreeBSD Handbook is widely regarded to be the go-to documentation source, particularly for new users. The team definitely deserves the credit.
The Debian Administrator's Handbook exists but it's not official and, like some other official manuals, is out of date. Cryptic man pages, however, are still the default documentation format though the reasons for that are both historical and cultural. Both Debian and FreeBSD started in 1993 when these systems were limited to extremely technical people and man pages were canon. Anything in HTML or PDF were considered "bonus." But, as these projects became more widely adopted, the culture of documentation shifted.
These days reading 30 different man pages and then engineering a solution is archaic and borderline unreasonable. HTML/PDF guides on hardening, virtualization, system tuning, and various reference manuals, step by step tutorials, cookbooks, and videos are the norm and significantly improve the accessibility of the OS as well as support people with different learning styles. The enterprise space isn't any different.
I am NOT faulting Debian. The sheer scale of the project is mind-boggling. Maintaining centralized up to date documentation of this magnitude requires significant organizational change and modernization....and it's required. The days of "RTFM!" are long gone, replaced by empathy, collaboration, and psychological safety and a new generation of users accustomed to different learning styles.
Even with these challenges, it's still my favorite OS. If you want to learn Linux, then seriously check out Debian. It's stable, mature, consistent, the community is great, and it's a solid foundation for technical projects.
I've been trying to install #FreeBSD 15 on spare laptops for the past week or so. The first laptop is on its way out. I wrote about it before. Tried a second laptop, which has a 5,400 RPM hard drive. There were more #networking issues, so just to see what worked I installed #Debian 13.
As an "Ah, what the hell. Let's install everything including all the Pure Blends!" moment I can wholeheartedly say the installation is *still* going. 😂
I've forgotten how just how slow these drives actually are.
"Slower than molasses dripping down a freezer wall" is an apt description.

If you've been running #Debian for a while and been doing in-place upgrades, it might be a good idea to do a clean install. I use LUKS encryption on my laptop and whatever version I originally installed only created a 512MB /boot partition and I was getting warnings every time I'd install a kernel update about it being full. 13 upped that to 1 GB. Between that and some changes in Gnome I didn't see because of old settings carrying over, a clean install was definitely a good idea.

@jarrodu @lexinova @delta There are tons of moving parts in the diagrams: https://chatmail.at/doc/relay/overview.html#chatmail-relay-dependency-diagram
When I see a bunch of moving parts like that, I get cold feet, that it'll be as easy as people make out. Is there a Youtube/Peertube video on this? If it's as easy as you claim, then I'd like to see a from-scratch install on #Debian 12, using python's uv for the package manager of chatrelay (in a uv venv). Including sending initial testing messages proving it's working in production.

We have PostgreSQL 14 on Debian 11 with TimescaleDB 2.16.1.
We want PostgreSQL 18 on Debian 13 with TimescaleDB 2.23.1.
But the support of TimescaleDB on PostgreSQL 14 ends at version 2.19.3.
On Debian 13 and PostgreSQL 18, the minimum version of TimescaleDB available is 2.23.0.
We have to upgrade with an intermediary step:
1. Upgrade TimescaleDB to 2.19.3 in-place
2. Upgrade to PostgreSQL 17 on Debian 12 (with TimescaleDB 2.19.3)
3. Upgrade TimescaleDB to 2.23.1
4. Upgrade to PostgreSQL 18 on Debian 13 (with TimescaleDB 2.23.1).
Add a multi-terabytes of data making dump/restore impossible.
At least the extension is available on Debian 13 which is not the case of age and Citus.
This is nice to have a 5 years support on PostgreSQL but beware if you use extensions. The time window could be less than that, complicating the upgrade process.

I am wondering if it is only #Debian or #KDE or that things have deteriorated so much in #Mozilla #Firefox to the point that I can barely use it:
from time to time can't move tabs, clicks in the top bar stop working completely until I restart it
sometimes the text cursor disappear or appears in wrong position different from where the text is actually inserted in textarea/input
this makes it really stressful and unpractical to use, even if it has been the browser I use my whole life

I 100% support codes of conduct which expect people to assume good faith, but when someone repeatedly misinterprets other people's words in a way that casts them in a bad light, at some point it becomes irrelevant whether they're doing it on purpose to score points or by accident; it's still excessively disruptive and disrespectful to the community.

Got #WebP to load in #Inkscape!
I thought for a long time that Inkscape simply doesn't support WebP, but that isn't true. The problem, rather, was that the gdk-pixbuf loader for WebP was not installed on my system.
People using #Debian or another distro based on it need to install the package named “webp-pixbuf-loader”. That's all you need to do; merely installing the package will enable WebP support in Inkscape.
This should also enable WebP thumbnails in #Nautilus, if you use #Gnome.
My #LinuxAudio setup from July 2010. I still have the Korg nanoKontrol and the BCR2000. I sold the BCF2000 and the Focusrite 10. All the other stuff either broke down or was brought to the thrift shop.
On a software level a whole lot has changed too. I switched from a modular setup to a monolithic setup, from JACK to just ALSA, from Ubuntu to #Debian and from Qtractor to #Ardour.

I have this irrational desire to try #proxmox. It supports LXC Containers now. This was deeply irresistible to my inner nerd nature. After a few hours of bumbling around (never touched proxmox before), I got a #Debian 13 LXC container running. My testing rig has a measly 8GB of RAM soldered to the motherboard, so the RAM savings count.

My systemd-networking/firewalld experimenting in a VM now working nicely on the real machine; all that pretty much just worked - especially after I added a missing 'ConfigureWithoutCarrier=on' I'd made a note to do and then forgotten. The main gotcha was the #debian I'd debootsrapped not having the firmware files for the NIC that my internet connection went through.
I then took about another hour or two to get my graphs working due to a a missing CORS header in Apache. Sigh!
Debian 13.2 is out. As always with a bunch of security and bug fixes.
#Debian 13.2 has been released. This doesn't constitute a major new version, just a point release with various security and stability updates. To get it, if you're already running Debian, just install your system updates like normal and reboot when you can to load the updated kernel.
@stefano This is indeed a great post. Refreshing to read - the author didn't distro-bash but instead highlighted how needs were met.
I have been leaning toward #FreeBSD after 20 years on #Debian, which has a special place in my heart. However, FreeBSD's *consistency*, elegant design, and better documentation are driving factors and I just can't look away.
Over these two decades, Linux has definitely changed. It's no longer what it once was: a #Unix clone. It's evolved into its own thing. Software does that and that's OK. But a lot of the changes or "improvements" have been needlessly reinventing the wheel with a worsening user experience and convoluted results. The audio subsystems (ALSA -> PulseAudio -> Pipewire and of course the mess that is/was JACK) and #SystemD are two big examples.
On SystemD, I don't disagree that Linux needed a modern init system. SystemD is faster, but from a human perspective it's worse. I am now typing *more* characters to manage services. Is there a reason why it couldn't be designed to manage services like:
> $SERVICE start/stop/restart
Instead, we are left with:
> systemctl $SERVICE start/stop/restart
But I digress.
#TBT I fell in love with FreeBSD when I first started my Linux journey in the mid-2000s, but only dabbled in it as it was never in any production environment I managed.
I have a FreeBSD VM sitting in my lab somewhere but due to other factors rarely do I get to it. I'm thinking it's time I grab a spare laptop, load it up, and use it as a daily driver to really force myself to learn it.

@stefano Great post! I've been using #Linux #FreeBSD for about two decades and want to share my experiences. For context, Linux became my daily driver and I dabbled in FreeBSD on the side.
As a newcomer to both the #technology and #culture of #Linux and the BSDs, *back then* there was more toxicity. And by toxicity I mean abrasive and unhelpful responses ("RTFM!") or some kind of "l337" attitudes in various mailing lists and forums. This, of course, was before YouTube and Reddit, where the former mediums were more prevalent.
Some Linux distros were friendlier than others. In those days, the #Debian mailing lists and forums were a rough place for newcomers and it drove a lot of people away. I left the forums because of that. I rarely post to the mailing lists but for other reasons.
At some point, there was considerable effort to improve the etiquette in said mediums, particularly the mailing lists. Sure, some fiery disagreements can take place but overall people are friendly and welcoming.
FreeBSD, on the other hand, has been a more positive experience. Yes, there are people who are vocal about their contempt for Linux, but they aren't disrespectful to other people.
Having witnessed both communities grow and change over the years, there's definitely less toxicity and FreeBSD is still a more welcoming community.
Want to share something cool about Debian? Maybe it's something that is brand new and will help inspire other distros, or maybe something that is in Debian for a long time but people don't know or tend to forget, or maybe something in between?! As a Debian user of many years, I've been wanting to give the @linuxmint Debian version a try. I installed LMDE 7 a few days ago and have been using it as my daily driver. I am nothing but extremely impressed. The power of Debian 13, running the Cinnamon Desktop, and all of the Linux Mint additions. This is an absolute wonderful Linux distribution.

It would be neat if #APT could store per-package notes for me.
In particular, I'd like to take note of why I decided to install a certain package. (It's an undeclared dependency of another package I have installed. The missing dependency is fixed in the latest #Debian but this machine isn't running that.)
Now, most of my installs are Debian, Linux Mint Debian Edition or Devuan.
I plan on doing more with NetBSD

(Et j'ai eu du 20 Mo/seconde pour le transfer, ce qui n'est pas mal du tout.)

Et de l'autre côté:

Debian to add hard Rust dependency to APT
It seems like a number of Debian ports are going to face difficult times over the coming months. Debian developer Julian Andres Klode has sent a message to the Debian mailing lists that APT will very soon start requiring Rust.
I plan to introduce hard Rust dependencies and Rust code into APT, no earlier than May 2026. This extends at first to the Rus

Installation was bumpy… The main issue was that I chose btrfs for /boot, which apparently needs ext4 instead.
Now I am getting this error message during boot, does anyone have any idea about how to solve this? (Please tell me I don’t need to reinstall…)
Apart from that everything seems to be working well! I will conclude the configuration tomorrow.
