are there any well-supported (read: old, if you must) dictation programs for #Linux that will do speech-to-text? everything i'm turning up is "AI". even the self-described privacy-respecting ones send data through "cloud" servers. and... no. no thank you.
the transcription doesn't even need to be very good. i can script-scrub some janky text if i need to.
but like... no accessibility-friendly dictation software in #Debian repositories? weird to me.
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS raises its desktop minimum RAM to 6 GB, up from 4 GB in 24.04, while Windows 11 still lists 4 GB. Canonical’s update reflects practical memory needs under GNOME, whereas Windows’ TPM requirement implies most systems already exceed the minimum 💻

By the way:

@Nux If for some reason you don't want to do unattended upgrades, what's wrong with just disabling that? (Set APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade to 0 in your apt configuration, or uninstall the unattended-upgrades package.)
If they still happen after that (and assuming that you haven't installed an alternative, like cron-apt), that's a bug which deserves to be reported as such.

Hi friends, I could use your input!
My mom has asked me to install Linux on her laptop, which distro should I pick?
- Dell Latitude 7320 Intel Core i7-Gen 11 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD
- Has to be stable, good hardware support
- Sysadmin tasks will be performed (remotely) by me, so doesn't have to be "beginner friendly" per se in that area (she won't be added to the wheel group 😅)
- Support for Xfce desktop (I guess most distros have that)
- Ideally support for encrypted root on ZFS
No: Ubuntu, Fedora, RHEL (or derivatives) please.
Given my recent fascination, I'd go with FreeBSD, but I'm afraid the hardware support isn't quite there yet. Voting and boosts are appreciated!
What should I pick?

RE: https://framapiaf.org/@sebsauvage/116313774703216263
This article is quite interesting and I'm interested about the idea of #immutable #Linux, at least for end users. I found nothing official on the #debian wiki.
On Debian, I don't remember having often experienced myself upgrade problems, with more than 25 years using it. Not on stable at least. (because ofc I run #testing :)
I don't know much about Fedora but I had the idea that it was not *that* stable because of its bleeding-edge nature.
#sysadmin #desktop #desktoplinux #yearofdesktoplinux
https://www.howtogeek.com/fedora-quietly-solved-linuxs-update-problem/
Ugh.
I moved fully over to #kubuntu at the end of last year, getting rid of my Windows 11 install, and I'm really glad I did. But now it seems like Ubuntu is doubling down even harder on Snaps (which are just plain bad), and with some other stuff coming down the line (like the age attestation stuff), I'm starting to wonder if I should move to another distro.
I've used stuff based on #debian for so long that I honestly don't know how I'd manage on anything else. But it sort of feels like pretty much everything there is going in a similar direction, so I've started wondering where else I should go.
I don't understand why anybody in their right mind would use a rolling release model, so that rules out pretty much anything based on #arch (also, any system that fetishizes installing from the command line like it's 1999 has a priority matrix that I don't think I intersect with pretty much anywhere).
I could do #fedora as I ran that for a while back in the early 00's, but I suspect Red Hat's going to wind up doing the same thing Canonical is on some level.
All I want is to be able to game well on my desktop. For my file server and second desktop, I'm not really as worried, because I'm not trying to play Doom Eternal or whatever on them.
Bleh.
You might like to take a look into #Movim by @movim, if you are interested in the combination of secure chat, public chats, blogging, A/V calls etc.
I looked at Briar some years ago, because I was interested in packaging it for #Debian. IIRC, the protocol wasn't formally documented, so that people could implement it in the programming language of choice, like it is for #XMPP, Matrix etc. Only a Java reference implementation to copy from. I hope, it's better nowadays.
Ubuntu 26.10 may trim GRUB in Secure Boot, dropping ZFS, Btrfs, LUKS and RAID, requiring unencrypted ext4 /boot or unsigned builds 🔐

Alright fedi, I have another one for you.
What's your favorite Linux tablet (or tablet that I can install Linux on) that you draw on? I'm specifically looking for something I can run Krita on and use for that purpose, but I would also use it for reading ebooks/comics.
It has to be fully independent, so no computer required. It has to have to have an HD screen. It has to run Linux, preferably Debian, as that's my favorite. It can't just be an android tablet unless it's possible to install Linux on it.
For context, I'm going to give up my ipad with apple pencil and want to replace that experience.
Bonus points if it comes with a stylus, but if not, please recommend one.

But, it didn't work on #ChimeraOS, which hasn't seen an update since last June. So I've converted the new #gaming PC to #Bazzite and streaming VR games wirelessly to my Meta Quest 2 headset with the Steam Link app seems to work fine. It's a little flaky at times, but seems to work best in desktop mode.

I was messing with the #debian installer and its disk partitioning. I don't understand this at all. This is plain stupid.
If the partitioning scheme includes swap, it should be the last partition on the disk. This installer frequently puts it in the absolute worst possible place: the middle.
That's dumb, especially in a virtual world where hard disks trivially change size.
See, what if I decide to make this disk bigger? What if I decide I need more swap? If swap is the last partition, it's trivial.
But when you stick swap in the middle of the fscking disk then it makes changes really non-trivial. You really can't change anything.
The only partitioning scheme that gets it right is the "All files in one partition" scheme. Since there's just the one root filesystem, it puts swap at the end.
Also, it appears that you cannot change the size of partitions in this view. Like, if I wasn't happy with 1.1G of swap, tough noogies. That surprises me. The entire POINT of an interactive installer like this is to allow me to specify high-level things like "Gimme 2G of swap" and have the installer recalculate all the start/stop partition values and such. I've done plenty of debian installs, but this is the first time I stopped to notice how bad this is.
Some of you may argue that the problems I cite aren't important. But I defy you to come up with a good reason why one should put the swap partition in the middle of the partition table. You can argue it doesn't hurt, but you cannot argue that it does something good.

I am happy with how this turned out. This is for a local startup business that wants an internal wiki (asked for mediawiki) and the ability to have more php-mariadb (mysql) custom web apps.
Why a GUI for a server? Just in case it is needed. I am not going to be doing all the work and I want it as easy as possible to use. Linux Mint Debian Edition is a good fit, as then I can just treat it like a Debian server. That's similar to a lot of the other Linux consulting I do.
I have a hard disk drive for versioned backup. Configured Time Shift to back up everything to it. Seems to work well, as I can browse the Timeshift snapshot in the file browser.
I also set up MediaWiki for them. Learned a few things there. I had to set a root mariadb password. I customized it with a logo and also made some other adjustments to the MediaWiki LocalSettings.php file.

That provides enough leverage for taking out applications, one by one, by stating they require legal age for usage. All it takes is a relentless series of campaigns employing the most prominent of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, "Think of the children!!!".
Appeasement and compliance in advance is not an appropriate answer here. TBH I'm appalled by swaths of developers suggesting implementations already, e.g. for #Debian.
"#AgeVerification", aka the "Think of the children!" Rider of the Infocalypse, is already making its way into #Debian.
The amount of compliance in advance is truly breathtaking, with dutiful enablers of #fascism already discussing implementation details.

I am pretty sure it would work fine in Legacy mode.
Since UEFI is newer, I am guessing that is the recommendation... but will Linux work fine on Legacy boot with current kernels in the current year? Any reasons or features that I really should have with UEFI? Or is Legacy boot going to be fine?

I installed #KDE on it. Besides some weird messages form `ibus` it went all fine. But the 18GiB disk is full now. TBF I no longer know how much my system uses. I used to have a separate 15GiB partition, but only because upgrades meant reinstalling, mostly.
Ever since I switched to #Debian around ~2000, I no longer needed the separation. At some point I just stopped creating separate partitions; I only have root and swap, which exactly what more user friendly distros like #Mint do.

They have assumed that all operating systems are like Microsoft Windows 11, Android, or iOS; and have written legislation for operating systems where people download glorified WWW client 'apps', from 'stores', which use 'accounts' that they have with vendors or Microsoft/Google/Apple.
But the legislation *as worded* *also* covers everything from #Debian and #Ubuntu through #Arch Linux and #MobaXTerm to #FreeBSD and #NetBSD and #OpenBSD; where users anonymously use package managers or ports systems to install applications, written by developers, on operating systems, from 'publicly available internet website' repositories.
There is no age field in the GECOS data in master.passwd(5) of course, and the reality is that no BSD or Linux-based operating system has this concept of apps/stores/accounts.

Haack's Networking - Creating a Production Pixelfed Instance
I've completed the write-up on the production PIxelfed instance. I am still a bit unclear on federation/discovery and whether my well-known is functioning correctly or not, but will update folks as soon as I know. Core features are working; if folks find issues, just let me know.

So, I'm trying #LibreWolf. Installed via packed on #Debian sid. This is done through something I didn't even knew existed: `extrepo`. There's a lot of 3rd party software there, I didn't even had the time to look at it all: https://salsa.debian.org/extrepo-team/extrepo-data/-/tree/master/repos/debian
At first launch nothing out of the ordinary happened. A normal #Firefox like window appeared. Except for two things:
* #DuckDuckGo is the default search engine
* #uBlockOrigin is already installed.
So far so good.

For anyone looking for work who'd be a good match, Freexian just sent this across the debian-jobs@ mailing list. Non-technical role, but maybe this will fit someone here. Here's what they said:
"Until now, Freexian has only hired Debian developers, but as the company grows, we need more non-technical staff. We are now looking for a Senior Sales & Business Development Manager to spearhead the next stage of growth in Freexian's sales and business development functions."
"We are looking for candidates who are mission- and values-aligned and specifically care about free and open source software (ideally Debian in particular). The Freexian team is global and fully remote, and this role is open to applicants worldwide."
"If you or someone you know, personally or professionally, would be a good fit, please reach out. Referrals from Debian members will be highly valued."
I wanted to test Playwright on my Arch Linux, but that software is a pain to install (which is rare on Arch), even with the AUR package. It's built for Debian-based distributions, and installing dependencies is a mess.
I was thinking about using Debian in a chroot, then I remembered the Distrobox project, which uses Podman with deep integration. This was a perfect use case for it, and it works super well. Kudos to the people involved!
So I tried a lot of solutions from various forums. I also tried different window managers, graphic managers, drivers, desktop managers, and whatever managers there are in #Linux.
#Mint, #Ubuntu and #Fedora has the same issues. Crash on HDMI connected and on waking from sleep. The root cause is the same, I assume.
Then I installed #Debian. Guess what? Everything works just fine. Sleep, awake, external displays...
The "CET" time zone has vanished between Debian 12 and 13.
For good reasons. This is not a time zone but a time zone abbreviation. We should use "Europe/Paris" instead.
Now we have a crisis meeting because it's a major breaking change that can't be fixed because nobody knows how to set the time zone to a different value in the application 🤦♂️

Observation. Although it wasn't the case with older versions of #Debian, or perhaps older versions of #XZ, creating archives with xz on Debian, whether thru tar or xz directly, now uses all CPU cores instead of just one like it did before. Just noticed this after doing a fresh install of Debian 13 a while back on my desktop PC.
System Administration: Week 3: Resizing a file system
In these two videos, we show how to resize an existing filesystem. First on #NetBSD using the resize_ffs(8) tool, where we first increase the size of a 512MB partition to 1GB, then shrink it down to 256MB. Next we repeat the same exercise on #Debian Linux, using the resize2fs(8) tool.

Ça me fait chier.

And it finally happened. My Dell Latitude 5400 running #Debian has, rather quietly, finally given up the ghost. I closed the lid after my last post, walked away, and when I returned the display never turned back on, the keyboard was not responsive (it was failing horribly with randomly repeating keys I did and did not press during my last post), the power button did not respond, and so I pulled the plug. After that, the power button did *nothing*.
Now, it's time to buy a new one. Oddly, my stress levels are dropping. I no longer need to worry about a failing laptop!
Y'know what? As an #opensource #advocate and #tech enthusiast, it's genuinely awesome to see increased mainstream coverage of #Linux and #FreeBSD. Unfortunately, a lot of these articles are riddled with mistakes, misinformation, clickbait, and overall low quality. A few minutes ago, while catching up on tech news I came across one #ZDNet author's frequent posts on Linux and FreeBSD.
To emphasize my point, I am only going to focus on one article titled, "After decades on Linux, FreeBSD finally gave me a reason to switch operating systems."
The following passages stuck out like sore thumb:
1.) "FreeBSD is more challenging than Linux."
-But is it really? Subjective, particularly if coming from a GUI-driven Linux distribution. Frankly I find FreeBSD easier because of the excellent documentation and coherent design.
2.) "FreeBSD is Unix-like" but further down he states, "Essentially, FreeBSD is Unix, where Linux is based on Unix."
-Contradictory, incorrect, and confusing for newcomers. FreeBSD is Unix. Linux (neither the kernel nor OS) is based on Unix.
3.) "Think of FreeBSD as a more challenging version of Linux. This operating system doesn't hold your hand, so you might learn a thing or two as you install it and the software you require. Even for a seasoned Linux veteran like me, FreeBSD can often be a head-scratcher."
-Challenging because it's *different than Linux*? FreeBSD doesn't hold your hand? What about #Debian, #Gentoo, #Arch, heck even #RHEL? Since the author didn't mention it, I'm going to assume he did not check the FreeBSD Handbook and his "seasoned Linux" experience has been using a Linux desktop for a couple years. Also, head-scratcher?! Being an experienced Debian user, I'd be scratching my head too if I just decided to use Gentoo on a whim. The trauma of hand-configuring the xorg.conf file was real.
Finally, contrary to the article's title, the author ended up not switching to FreeBSD.
-Clickbait.
I am all for more people exploring FreeBSD and Linux. They are great OSes but it is critical the information being reported is both accurate and consistent. For reference the article is linked below.
@rl_dane #Mozilla #Firefox has been doing this for *years*. Like, for the past several #Debian releases too - and that distro uses the ESR version. It's disappointing to see Firefox enabling this crap by default on both the mainstream and ESR version.
You can turn this off in the settings, however, I wish this setting were opt-in rather than opt-out.
I use #Waterfox on my phone and have no complaints. It's Firefox stripped down and with some privacy settings enabled.
I only use Chrome at work as Firefox is banned and M$ Edge is the only other choice). While I have Chromium installed on the Debian laptop, it's largely for testing purposes.
