I'm preparing some Ansible roles to open their source code by adding Molecule tests.
As always, @geerlingguy has wonderful content for that 🙏

I can't manage to run systemd commands in my docker setup ("Service is in unknown state"). When I start a container manually, I can use systemctl. But it fails when Molecule creates the container.
Any idea?

Debian has officially promoted loong64 from Debian Ports, confirming it will ship as a supported architecture in Debian 14 Forky.

I love using Debian. I think it is so interesting that so many distros have been or currently are based on Debian. While I prefer vanillia Debian, I wanted to list all of the Debian based distros (non-Ubuntu) I know of and categorize them based on what makes them unique.
Ease of use:
Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) - Default for Windows refugees.
MX Linux - MXTools is cool.
Deepin - Beautiful, preconfigured DE.
Peppermint_OS – Lightweight, cloud integrated
Modern/Atomic (New Technologies):
Vanilla OS - Immutable, atomic updates, ability to run apps from Fedora/Arch via Apx. Friendly to new users.
Nitrux - Immutable, no systemd (OpenRC), heavy reliance on AppImage
Performance and/or Old Hardware:
Siduction - Based on Debian Sid. Rolling release, newest kernels.
antiX - No systemd, runs on a toaster (256MB RAM)
Sparky Linux - Debian testing w/better support for drivers/gaming.
BunsenLabs - minimalist OpenBox
Elive - Enlightenment desktop, high-end looks for 20 year old hardware.
Window Maker Live - NeXTSTEP look, fast, polished, and based on Debian 13.
Multimedia/Creative:
AV Linux (MX Edition) – Preconfigured w/low-latency kernel for audio production.
Neptune OS – Polished KDE with excellent media support.
Toolbox Distros:
Kali Linux / Parrot OS - Penetration tools preloaded, think hackerman.
Tails - Anonymity, amnesic, no trace
Whonix – Highly secure via dual-VM setup.
Proxmox VE - Server, machine host for VMs
TrueNAS SCALE - NAS, built for ZFS storage and applications.
OpenMediaVault – Turn old hardware into a NAS
Grml/Finnix/Knoppix - The "oh shit" buttons
Raspberry Pi OS - built for Pi's
VyOS – Router OS
BashCore - Ultra minimalist, stealth, CLI focused, live environment, zero branding.
Protest Distros:
Devuan - dislike for systemd
PureOS – FSF endorsed, 100% free software, privacy-focused
Global & Educational:
Endless OS – Designed for developing world for offline content.
Emmabuntüs – Reviving donated PCs for schools in Africa.
You could also consider Debian Pureblends, like Debian Med and Debian Edu.
Did I miss any? Please let me know, I will edit the list. Thank you!

That's really just about it.
Sorry if I'm not putting it super tactfully. I was a fanboy in my day, but it was a lot easier to be an Apple fanboy in 1989 or 2009 than today, now that they're just an overrated, overpriced, overhyped fashion brand with fascist leanings.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If you don't have any experience running a free(dom) OS on your computer(s), then I can recommend something like Fedora or MX Linux as a great starting point, although I'm partial to #Debian. Getting FreeBSD going takes a little bit of work, although I wouldn't call it particularly hard. It's just some #RTFM :)
Again, I don't mean to be belligerent or demeaning. I'm just a bit further along on my journey and I have a hard time hiding my disdain for Apple anymore. I was a huge Apple fan for most of my life, so it's definitely a love-to-hate kinda thing. The mystical wave function of Apple's hype machine collapsed after dazzling my eyes for 30 years, and all I was left with was a solitary particle of bullcrap. XD
Pleases feel free to holler if you need any help or suggestions. I'm here for it. :)

Creating a backup image and then getting to run in #VirtualBox will give me something to do over the break. They need an easily accessible backup in case they need something important from the PC.
Please recommend me a distro!

Recorded the last guitar parts. Did the solo like 20 times. When I initially worked out the solo it was at 167bpm. Now it's 175. And 2/4. And someone was watching me. I didn't really nail it but I'll pull a Quincy Jones with some cutting and pasting.
Very happy though that Sander, the other guitarist from @jeremy@mastodon.classicyou.nl, laid down some solid parts.
Now I gotta mix the whole lot. And do the vocals. It's going to be a busy weekend.

I'm going to do a series of blog posts after the #Vizio trial is over about my upgrade to my #NovaCustom laptop & a much newer #Debian & all the stuff I went through to make it happen.
I'm starting this thread simply to have a place to keep all my ideas about those posts publicly, in case they are immediately useful.
I suspect I won't have time to engage in replying on this thread until circa 2026-02-15, which is when I plan to start the blog posts.

So, I'm now desperate: the only blocker for my @novacustom laptop to meet my computing requirements.

There's a lot of truth to that. I started using #Debian back when Sarge was released. Since then I've only come across at most three shops in my area which use Debian in their infrastructure. I live a stone's throw from the Boston/Cambridge area, one of the most tech-heavy regions in the US. Every other place that I've interviewed at used #Ubuntu LTS, #RHEL, or (yes) Solaris.
Their release cadence has improved significantly to a more predictable every 2ish years and they now have an LTS release.
On the topic of books, while it has been covered in #Linux #books, Debian-specific books are even more rare. At one point O'Reilly had a Debian book and it was already outdated by the time it was released.
Which leads me to another question: given the lack of documentation in Debian is buying an Ubuntu book a reliable way of learning it? I am not sure if there's a straight answer.

This right here, but...
It's important to understand Debian's culture. A solid description is it's the bazaar from Eric Raymond's "The Cathedral and The Bazaar." There is a strong emphasis on #decentralization over #cohesion and a strong #resistance to a top-down structure and #authority. Culturally, the devs and maintainers consider #code primary and #documentation a nice to have but not essential. Furthermore, there are no enforced documentation standards. With such decentralization and full autonomy from devs and maintainers, the end result is thousands of people doing whatever they want and documenting however they see fit. #Debian #developers also assume a high degree of #technical #competency from whoever uses it.
Concerning the Debian Wiki, there is no editor-in-chief nor any ownership and a reflection of its culture. The attitude is "if you want something better, be the one to do it." The #quality of articles varies wildly, from chicken scratch notes to a walk through.
With so much #resistance to authority and change, improving documentation is a real #challenge. That being said, the simplest solutions at the moment are:
1.) Adopt the Debian Administrator's Handbook and collaboratively maintain it.
2.) Improve the wiki by adding templates and freshness tags.
The organization, culture, and project are honestly so fascinating. Honestly, it blows me away that one of THE most #influential operating systems ever functions in such a beautifully chaotic way. I mean, it has hundreds of derivatives and forks under it including #Ubuntu and #Mint (which are incredibly successful on their own). It's paradoxical that something that large and influential has barely any coverage. People don't write books on Debian but there are plenty for #RHEL and Ubuntu. Heck, there are more books on #FreeBSD at this very moment than Debian....which also further gatekeeps the knowledge from people.
But....it's important to understand why and what Debian actually is. I use my operating systems to cars analogy. RHEL, Ubuntu, #SUSE are all like going to different dealerships and buying a #car. All commercial off the shelf products. Debian is like skipping the dealership and buying the car kit from which you build your own. It's so much more than the "DIY hacker distro" but a powerful #development base for #tech #projects. Not unlike building a Go-Kart, a monstrous 6x6 truck, or a sports car. It's #flexible, #powerful, and can be tailored to one's needs. But, like a car kit, there's no glossy manual, just #technical specs.
It assumes you know what you are doing or that you are willing to get your hands dirty to learn.
When viewed from this perspective, it makes sense why documentation is the way it is. I'm not saying it's right but for its documentation to be improved to being on par with other OSes it would require a massive organizational shift to being a centralized #cathedral.

After further #troubleshooting and #testing, I switched back from #UEFI to #BIOS and was able to set the USB optical drive as the primary boot device. I grabbed my trusty #Debian 13 netinstall and away I went!
Well, I didn't get *too* far. Hell, I didn't even get off the runway. The #laptop complained about a missing hard drive. Oh boy. I acknowledged the error and proceeded. The Debian installer displayed the initial menu. I chose "Install" and KA-POW! It failed miserably with this error.
So, in conclusion two things are true:
1.) This laptop has officially kicked the bucket.
2.) I like pain.
For decades, #Debian has been my go-to for #Linux and operating systems in general. It's thoroughly tested, stability is rock solid, sane, and it stays out of the way. The #community, the Social Contract, the #transparency of the organization, and their #commitment to #diversity are also important reasons why I use it.
One of the longtime challenges I've had with it, however, is documentation. It is outdated and spotty. Finding information often requires #clairvoyance, digging through the #Internet, scattered wikis, old mailing lists, forums, and blog posts. It makes solving problems needlessly difficult. For this reason I have been leaning towards #FreeBSD. Technical and philosophical Differences aside, FreeBSD's documentation is excellent. The FreeBSD Handbook is widely regarded to be the go-to documentation source, particularly for new users. The team definitely deserves the credit.
The Debian Administrator's Handbook exists but it's not official and, like some other official manuals, is out of date. Cryptic man pages, however, are still the default documentation format though the reasons for that are both historical and cultural. Both Debian and FreeBSD started in 1993 when these systems were limited to extremely technical people and man pages were canon. Anything in HTML or PDF were considered "bonus." But, as these projects became more widely adopted, the culture of documentation shifted.
These days reading 30 different man pages and then engineering a solution is archaic and borderline unreasonable. HTML/PDF guides on hardening, virtualization, system tuning, and various reference manuals, step by step tutorials, cookbooks, and videos are the norm and significantly improve the accessibility of the OS as well as support people with different learning styles. The enterprise space isn't any different.
I am NOT faulting Debian. The sheer scale of the project is mind-boggling. Maintaining centralized up to date documentation of this magnitude requires significant organizational change and modernization....and it's required. The days of "RTFM!" are long gone, replaced by empathy, collaboration, and psychological safety and a new generation of users accustomed to different learning styles.
Even with these challenges, it's still my favorite OS. If you want to learn Linux, then seriously check out Debian. It's stable, mature, consistent, the community is great, and it's a solid foundation for technical projects.
I've been trying to install #FreeBSD 15 on spare laptops for the past week or so. The first laptop is on its way out. I wrote about it before. Tried a second laptop, which has a 5,400 RPM hard drive. There were more #networking issues, so just to see what worked I installed #Debian 13.
As an "Ah, what the hell. Let's install everything including all the Pure Blends!" moment I can wholeheartedly say the installation is *still* going. 😂
I've forgotten how just how slow these drives actually are.
"Slower than molasses dripping down a freezer wall" is an apt description.
👀 Hot Take

Ok so hey #SelfHosting
I want a #SelfHosted web-type Office Suite ala Google Sheets/Docs and I don't want it to be part of some gigantic resource-chewing albatross like #NextCloud
I would like to do all my Word Processing and Spreadsheeting and so forth through a web interface, which is served from my #Debian server (docker is fine) and saves the documents as normal files in a defined directory.
Does such a thing exist? I do NOT need feature-rich, I do not need it to save MSOffice docs that I can send to a printing shop with all bugs intact, I just want to stop losing shit to hard drive wipes, which I'm sorry but nuking my hard drive is a lifestyle choice at this point and I don't care what you think about it.
I have had the thought that maybe #LibreOffice has some sort of plugin or something which could store files in an Object Storage type thingy that I could self-host instead, cause I've been planning to get some sort of bucket online since forever...

If you've been running #Debian for a while and been doing in-place upgrades, it might be a good idea to do a clean install. I use LUKS encryption on my laptop and whatever version I originally installed only created a 512MB /boot partition and I was getting warnings every time I'd install a kernel update about it being full. 13 upped that to 1 GB. Between that and some changes in Gnome I didn't see because of old settings carrying over, a clean install was definitely a good idea.

Taken abstractly, nix is a build system. Nixpkgs has arch-install-scripts and debootstrap. Using these tools, it is possible to build a rootfs that can be turned into an installable iso. It follows therefore, that nix could be used to build and manage highly custom builds of upstream distros like Debian and Arch without actually booting into a VM in order to do it.
In this regard, Linux is a snake eating its own tail, but I wonder if this could be used for something besides just as a curiosity.
I imagine there's some gremlins in there to be found. But it could be cool to use nix to just spawn preconfigured distros that aren't even NixOS.

We have PostgreSQL 14 on Debian 11 with TimescaleDB 2.16.1.
We want PostgreSQL 18 on Debian 13 with TimescaleDB 2.23.1.
But the support of TimescaleDB on PostgreSQL 14 ends at version 2.19.3.
On Debian 13 and PostgreSQL 18, the minimum version of TimescaleDB available is 2.23.0.
We have to upgrade with an intermediary step:
1. Upgrade TimescaleDB to 2.19.3 in-place
2. Upgrade to PostgreSQL 17 on Debian 12 (with TimescaleDB 2.19.3)
3. Upgrade TimescaleDB to 2.23.1
4. Upgrade to PostgreSQL 18 on Debian 13 (with TimescaleDB 2.23.1).
Add a multi-terabytes of data making dump/restore impossible.
At least the extension is available on Debian 13 which is not the case of age and Citus.
This is nice to have a 5 years support on PostgreSQL but beware if you use extensions. The time window could be less than that, complicating the upgrade process.

I am wondering if it is only #Debian or #KDE or that things have deteriorated so much in #Mozilla #Firefox to the point that I can barely use it:
from time to time can't move tabs, clicks in the top bar stop working completely until I restart it
sometimes the text cursor disappear or appears in wrong position different from where the text is actually inserted in textarea/input
this makes it really stressful and unpractical to use, even if it has been the browser I use my whole life

I 100% support codes of conduct which expect people to assume good faith, but when someone repeatedly misinterprets other people's words in a way that casts them in a bad light, at some point it becomes irrelevant whether they're doing it on purpose to score points or by accident; it's still excessively disruptive and disrespectful to the community.

Got #WebP to load in #Inkscape!
I thought for a long time that Inkscape simply doesn't support WebP, but that isn't true. The problem, rather, was that the gdk-pixbuf loader for WebP was not installed on my system.
People using #Debian or another distro based on it need to install the package named “webp-pixbuf-loader”. That's all you need to do; merely installing the package will enable WebP support in Inkscape.
This should also enable WebP thumbnails in #Nautilus, if you use #Gnome.
My #LinuxAudio setup from July 2010. I still have the Korg nanoKontrol and the BCR2000. I sold the BCF2000 and the Focusrite 10. All the other stuff either broke down or was brought to the thrift shop.
On a software level a whole lot has changed too. I switched from a modular setup to a monolithic setup, from JACK to just ALSA, from Ubuntu to #Debian and from Qtractor to #Ardour.

My systemd-networking/firewalld experimenting in a VM now working nicely on the real machine; all that pretty much just worked - especially after I added a missing 'ConfigureWithoutCarrier=on' I'd made a note to do and then forgotten. The main gotcha was the #debian I'd debootsrapped not having the firmware files for the NIC that my internet connection went through.
I then took about another hour or two to get my graphs working due to a a missing CORS header in Apache. Sigh!
✅ Okay, after some more testing, looks like it's somehow related to the Wireguard tunnel, not the upgrade (I might have simply had bad luck with timing and noticing a problem and jumping to the conclusion that it was related to the upgrade).
Previous kernel, same tunnel, same issue.
New kernel, different tunnel, not a problem.
So likely NOT a Debian Trixie 13.2 issue after all! Good! I can poke at this separately.
FIXED
Anyone else having IPv6 issues (possibly with Wireguard) after the Debian Trixie 13.2 update just now, which includes a kernel upgrade 6.12.48-1 to 6.12.57-1? It was working before, and after the upgrade I don't seem to get any IPv6 default route. (I do get an IPv6 assignment.)
Haven't had any opportunity yet to do much troubleshooting, but don't see anything obviously relevant in the Debian bug tracker or debian-user archives.

Debian 13.2 is out. As always with a bunch of security and bug fixes.

Hi #Linux, ever heard of https://paldo.org?
paldo is a Upkg driven GNU/Linux distribution. It's kind of a mix of a source and a binary distribution. Even though it builds packages like a source distribution it provides binary packages.
https://www.paldo.org/index-section-support-page-install.html
paldo stands for "pure adaptable linux distribution" and they try to accomplish this in every package.

#Debian 13.2 has been released. This doesn't constitute a major new version, just a point release with various security and stability updates. To get it, if you're already running Debian, just install your system updates like normal and reboot when you can to load the updated kernel.
@stefano This is indeed a great post. Refreshing to read - the author didn't distro-bash but instead highlighted how needs were met.
I have been leaning toward #FreeBSD after 20 years on #Debian, which has a special place in my heart. However, FreeBSD's *consistency*, elegant design, and better documentation are driving factors and I just can't look away.
Over these two decades, Linux has definitely changed. It's no longer what it once was: a #Unix clone. It's evolved into its own thing. Software does that and that's OK. But a lot of the changes or "improvements" have been needlessly reinventing the wheel with a worsening user experience and convoluted results. The audio subsystems (ALSA -> PulseAudio -> Pipewire and of course the mess that is/was JACK) and #SystemD are two big examples.
On SystemD, I don't disagree that Linux needed a modern init system. SystemD is faster, but from a human perspective it's worse. I am now typing *more* characters to manage services. Is there a reason why it couldn't be designed to manage services like:
> $SERVICE start/stop/restart
Instead, we are left with:
> systemctl $SERVICE start/stop/restart
But I digress.
#TBT I fell in love with FreeBSD when I first started my Linux journey in the mid-2000s, but only dabbled in it as it was never in any production environment I managed.
I have a FreeBSD VM sitting in my lab somewhere but due to other factors rarely do I get to it. I'm thinking it's time I grab a spare laptop, load it up, and use it as a daily driver to really force myself to learn it.
After Debian archive was updated to 13.2 (yes, it's the second point release already!), the Debian CD team did the hard work of preparing and testing our installation medias to make sure everything is working correctly. @stefano Great post! I've been using #Linux #FreeBSD for about two decades and want to share my experiences. For context, Linux became my daily driver and I dabbled in FreeBSD on the side.
As a newcomer to both the #technology and #culture of #Linux and the BSDs, *back then* there was more toxicity. And by toxicity I mean abrasive and unhelpful responses ("RTFM!") or some kind of "l337" attitudes in various mailing lists and forums. This, of course, was before YouTube and Reddit, where the former mediums were more prevalent.
Some Linux distros were friendlier than others. In those days, the #Debian mailing lists and forums were a rough place for newcomers and it drove a lot of people away. I left the forums because of that. I rarely post to the mailing lists but for other reasons.
At some point, there was considerable effort to improve the etiquette in said mediums, particularly the mailing lists. Sure, some fiery disagreements can take place but overall people are friendly and welcoming.
FreeBSD, on the other hand, has been a more positive experience. Yes, there are people who are vocal about their contempt for Linux, but they aren't disrespectful to other people.
Having witnessed both communities grow and change over the years, there's definitely less toxicity and FreeBSD is still a more welcoming community.
Want to share something cool about Debian? Maybe it's something that is brand new and will help inspire other distros, or maybe something that is in Debian for a long time but people don't know or tend to forget, or maybe something in between?! The FOSDEM's Call For Proposals for the distros devroom is now open: https://lists.debian.org/debian-project/2025/11/msg00004.html #debian #distros #FOSDEM #11

As a Debian user of many years, I've been wanting to give the @linuxmint Debian version a try. I installed LMDE 7 a few days ago and have been using it as my daily driver. I am nothing but extremely impressed. The power of Debian 13, running the Cinnamon Desktop, and all of the Linux Mint additions. This is an absolute wonderful Linux distribution.

Three years ago, I experimented with introducing automated build testing for RISC-V in Linux GPU drivers. Back then, it was a bit hacky due to the older Debian version used in CI [ https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/merge_requests/19917 ]
Recently, Mesa3D CI was upgraded to Debian 13, which supports RISC-V out of the box — and we’ve already been testing basic RISC-V builds for the past two days!

Debian to add hard Rust dependency to APT
It seems like a number of Debian ports are going to face difficult times over the coming months. Debian developer Julian Andres Klode has sent a message to the Debian mailing lists that APT will very soon start requiring Rust.
I plan to introduce hard Rust dependencies and Rust code into APT, no earlier than May 2026. This extends at first to the Rus

I am stoked! Installing Debian Trixie (Debian 13 testing) on my Framework! 😍🚀

Done!
Installation was bumpy… The main issue was that I chose btrfs for /boot, which apparently needs ext4 instead.
Now I am getting this error message during boot, does anyone have any idea about how to solve this? (Please tell me I don’t need to reinstall…)
Apart from that everything seems to be working well! I will conclude the configuration tomorrow.

@rqm Looking at that thread, there are definitely people who are not thrilled about the idea.
I'm running some tests on my old and trusted Raspberry Pi A+.
I've installed Raspbian - latest release, lite version. At the prompt, it's using 92 MB of RAM, mainly due to systemd and NetworkManager. As soon as you use it (even just for apt), it starts swapping and becomes almost unusable. It took 5 minutes just to install Python.
I tried NetBSD (on the same memory card): 35 MB of RAM used (including Postfix!) and it's totally usable.
If you're using #debian unstable and GNOME, you should probably delay upgrading for a day or two to avoid https://bugs.debian.org/1119809
#linux
Right; mail server upgraded to #debian Trixie; I did it by recreating it in a local VM first; package install to match, and then tested a restore from my encrypted backups - which was a good exercise in its self. Then a dist-upgrade; fixing up Dovecot was the hairiest bit - they've randomly changed the name of a bunch of options. mail_location is now mail_driver/home/path/inbox_path and the ssl options have also changed. mbox files are deprecated , but still work for now - job for later.
I've come to the conclusion that, while I am still using #Windows 11 out of inertia, it's time to contemplate an exit plan towards #Linux . The switch won't be any time soon (I have too much other stuff on my plate for the foreseeable future), but I do want to avoid paying further license fees to #Microsoft .
Major areas of concern:
- My #Steam library. I am by no means a heavy gamer, but I want to check if the major games I enjoy are known to work on Linux.
- Migrating away from #GoogleDrive towards #NextCloud is going to be a major chore, but it's something I can start in advance.
- I am a very heavy user of Notepad++ for my #TeXLaTeX typesetting, so I need a replacement whose user experience comes close (and no, neither vim nor emacs count).
As for what distribution to choose... I dunno. Lots of people at my place of work use #Debian , so maybe that would be a good idea?

$ wget -qO- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nvm-sh/nvm/v0.40.3/install.sh | bash=> Downloading nvm from git to '/home/skotperez/.nvm'=> Clonando en '/home/skotperez/.nvm'...remote: Enumerating objects: 383, done.remote: Counting objects: 100% (383/383), done.remote: Compressing objects: 100% (326/326), done.remote: Total 383 (delta 43), reused 180 (delta 29), pack-reused 0 (from 0)Recibiendo objetos: 100% (383/383), 391.78 KiB | 2.67 MiB/s, listo.Resolviendo deltas: 100% (43/43), listo.* (HEAD desacoplado en FETCH_HEAD) master=> Compressing and cleaning up git repository=> Appending nvm source string to /home/skotperez/.zshrc=> Appending bash_completion source string to /home/skotperez/.zshrc=> You currently have modules installed globally with `npm`. These will no=> longer be linked to the active version of Node when you install a new node=> with `nvm`; and they may (depending on how you construct your `$PATH`)=> override the binaries of modules installed with `nvm`:/usr/local/lib├── @vue/cli@5.0.8└── npm-check-updates@16.13.2=> If you wish to uninstall them at a later point (or re-install them under your=> `nvm` node installs), you can remove them from the system Node as follows: $ nvm use system $ npm uninstall -g a_module=> Close and reopen your terminal to start using nvm or run the following to use it now:export NVM_DIR="$HOME/.nvm"[ -s "$NVM_DIR/nvm.sh" ] && \. "$NVM_DIR/nvm.sh" # This loads nvm[ -s "$NVM_DIR/bash_completion" ] && \. "$NVM_DIR/bash_completion" # This loads nvm bash_completion
$ node -vv20.19.5$ npm -v9.2.0
$ nvm install nodeDownloading and installing node v25.0.0...Downloading https://nodejs.org/dist/v25.0.0/node-v25.0.0-linux-x64.tar.xz...############################################################################################################################################################################ 100.0%Computing checksum with sha256sumChecksums matched!Now using node v25.0.0 (npm v11.6.2)Creating default alias: default -> node (-> v25.0.0)
$ node -vv25.0.0$ npm -v11.6.2
$ nvm install 22.21.0Downloading and installing node v22.21.0...Downloading https://nodejs.org/dist/v22.21.0/node-v22.21.0-linux-x64.tar.xz...############################################################################################################################################################################ 100.0%Computing checksum with sha256sumChecksums matched!Now using node v22.21.0 (npm v10.9.4)
$ nvm ls-remote
$ nvm use 22.21.0
$ npm install -g @google/gemini-cli

Age makes you more cautious. I used to carry Debian CD's with me & do all my upgrades while in flight without electricity or Internet — just to test myself I could hack my way out of a screwed up GRUB or problematic #Linux build.

Heads up if you're running #Debian #Forky (a.k.a. Debian Testing) and you have a lot of RAM. The new user-space OOM manager systemd-oomd doesn't treat kernel cache memory as available when calculating memory usage. That means it decides you're running out of RAM when you actually aren't and kills processes when it shouldn't.
Ref: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1118191
You might want to uninstall it until this is fixed, or mask systemd-oomd.{service,socket} and reboot to disable it.

On my laptop, I'm using #Gnome 48 in #Debian Trixie, under Wayland. There are two 1080p displays connected, and it also has a 1920p built-in screen which I'm using with 200 % scaling.
If I use Gnome's builtin screenshot tool, all screenshots from the 100 % screens are blurry: It's scaling up the 1080p screens, interpolating pixels.
Here's an example screenshot dragged across both screens, #HiDPI on the left.
The issue is: It's also blurry when screenshotting only a 1080p screen.
Suggestions?
Taking a moment to appreciate that I can take my Pixel Buds out of their case and they automatically connect to my #Debian laptop, and the sound from the video that's currently playing automatically moves to them _and_ the video stops for a split second to re-sync and compensate for Bluetooth latency, _automatically_, without me having to write 100 lines of configs and scripting.
And I _could_ customize all of that, if I really wanted.
2025 really is the year of the Linux Desktop.

Today, I'm grateful for #ZFS. I'm grateful that taking snapshots of #bhyve VMs is so easy.
I attempted an update of a #Debian VM from 12 to 13, but I realized a piece of software I need doesn't support Debian 13 just yet (I suspect it will relatively soon.)
I had thought to power the VM off, take a snapshot of it, and then attempt the update.
It wasn't until after the update completed (successfully) that I realized the issue with the third-party software.
I just powered the VM down and reverted back to the snapshot.
It's as if nothing ever happened.
I know, it's a simple feature. Most other virtualization solutions also provide snapshotting. It's just nice that it's integrated into my host OS.
#Debian unstable has a bad bug in #openssh
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1117594
It's fixed but not yet released.
deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/oracle-virtualbox-2016.gpg] https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian trixie contrib
Types: debURIs: https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debianSuites: trixieComponents: contribSigned-By: /usr/share/keyrings/oracle-virtualbox-2016.gpg
wget -O- https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc | sudo gpg --yes --output /usr/share/keyrings/oracle-virtualbox-2016.gpg --dearmor
sudo apt updatesudo apt install virtualbox
echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/hashicorp-archive-keyring.gpg] https://apt.releases.hashicorp.com $(grep -oP '(?<=UBUNTU_CODENAME=).*' /etc/os-release || lsb_release -cs) main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/hashicorp.list
wget -O - https://apt.releases.hashicorp.com/gpg | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/hashicorp-archive-keyring.gpg
sudo apt updatesudo apt install vagrant
Package: vagrantPin: release a=trixiePin-Priority: 1200
sudo apt install -t trixie vagrant

Then let me know, I spotted a few minor issues and started preparing a patch.
Would also be cool if…
* …some #ArchLinux user could check if the additional steps needed are still required or if "make install" suffices there thse days
* …some #Debian user could check if CONFIG_SYSTEM_TRUSTED_KEYS still points to an unshipped file and thus needs to be adjusted[2].

Really wondering what "upstream" actually refers to in "built-in #Debian #Linux environment with upstream support"
* Qualcomm?
* Debian? [Edit: stable or testing?]
* Upstream #LinuxKernel, #Mesa, et. al.?

That's annoying
The #Debian stable security-update channel for dovecot upgrades from 2.3 to 2.4, and the 2.3 configuration file format is not compatible with 2.4.
Don't upgrade dovecot to 2.4 until you have time to fix the configuration file.
This is slightly helpful https://doc.dovecot.org/main/installation/upgrade/2.3-to-2.4.html

Right now when I type a backtick ("`") in a #GitHub #Markdown input box in #Firefox 143.0.4 (deb packaged by Mozilla) on #Debian #Linux (Testing) in #GNOME, instead of it just being displayed as a backtick, it's being displayed as an accent on the following character.
See screenshots for what I mean.
Not happening in Chrome, or on Windows, or in text input boxes on at least one other website I tried.
EDIT: I figured it out. See the replies.

"Connection timed out" bzw. "Access denied".

Hum... 🤔
Anyone using #pdfpc (PDF presenter console) on #GNOME 48 (from #Debian Trixie)? It no longer works for me since the Trixie upgrade: it now shows both presenter and presentation windows on the same display. -1/-2 fiddling doesn't change anything, and even manually moving the presentation window to the right display doesn't help, because it has the wrong size.
Over next 1-2 weeks,I'd appreciate an extended thread re: #FrameworkLaptop, #mntreform, & #FOSS.
TL;DR on my idiosyncratic needs:
* minimize binary firmware blobs¹
* Having 2 disks in RAID-1²
* Runs stock Official #Debian stable³
* Understanding best current replacement keyboard options⁴
* Form factor that works for my travel needs.
Is @frameworkcomputer or @mntmn better for me?
I'd be glad if ∃ active engagement on this!
#Debian #armel has reached end of life with the release of #trixie and will not be included in #forky (already being removed from sid).
Unfortunately, that means e-waste for the affected devices, such as several older #RPi editions (unless switching to Raspian, which may or may not even work or support them for longer and is effort anyway).
armel has not been part of #LTS and #ELTS for a while, but this was not a problem as it’s a minority architecture and users could always upgrade (btw, if your armel box is still running bookworm, you’ll want to be on trixie by 2026-06-10).
I asked for it to be included in trixie LTS and ELTS, so that the old hardware can be used mostly securely until about 2035 instead of 2028, and the limiting factor for this is not will or infrastructure but funding. (While most security fixes aren’t specific to one of the architectures in question, there’s still some overhead, and armel is often slower to build and may need some more hand-holding than the newer armhf and arm64, so I believe that funding is actually needed.)
I’m just a private individual running one box with it I got as a gift, so I cannot offer much, but if you care about Debian and can offer funding, please approach @freexian (who organise LTS and offer ELTS as a separate-from-Debian offer) about this (and specifically mention armel).
If someone has connections to organisations involved in devices that cannot run armv7 hardfloat Debian or better, such as the #Raspberry Pi foundation, please ask them to contribute to #Freexian in the same way, so we can have proper Debian on these devices for seven years longer than planned.
Thanks in advance.

Mastodon update v4.4.5 for burningboard.net done.
Seems the Debian uprade fom 12 (Bookworm) to 13 (Trixie) had some unexpected consequences, as the symlinks for /usr/bin/yarn , /usr/bin/yarnpkg and /usr/bin/pnpx were broken. But a quick removal of the defective symlinks plus a "corepack enable" did fix those shims again :-)
Since ifupdown handles only the most basic of configurations, I went with the strategy of a systemd service to call a shell script in oneshot to set up the bridge devices and all the VLANs, then use the dhcpcd service to manage the address configuration. That actually all works great... except that resolv.conf doesn't get generated properly on boot. dhcpcd is calling resolvconf -a correctly, as resolvconf -l shows all the configuration populated. Calling -a is supposed to update resolv.conf immediately if updates are enabled, so the fact that it isn't tells me this is a classic race condition on startup. I can run resolvconf -u as soon as I log in and the file gets generated. So much for dependency management.
Mon fidèle compagnon de 2010-2011 est de retour ! 🤩

I've uploaded a version of xdg-desktop-portal-phosh with the #Rust based portal enabled to #Debian experimental.
This finally gives @mobian users adaptive account and app chooser portals (contributed by @arunmani ).
Thanks to @debian 's Rust maintainers all needed crates were already packaged.
The next upload will target unstable but we want to have the current version in unstable migrate first to avoid removal from #forky.

I've been having a problem with Google Chrome and Chromium crashing the display in Debian 13 on my 2011 iMac.
You can get half the fix by running an Xorg session, where it doesn't crash but artifacts appear.
The full fix is turning off graphics (hardware) acceleration in the browser at chrome://settings/system.
After turning off graphics (hardware) acceleration, the browser runs fine in Wayland and Xorg.
What would you think about a new API endpoint that lets you run unattended upgrades with a simple call like:
/nodes/{node_name}/apt/upgrade
At the moment you need to use the node’s HTML5 console to perform upgrades. Other methods exist such as running unattended Debian upgrade scripts, using patch management tools like #Spacewalk or #QualvoSec, or automating the process with #Ansible over SSH. My idea is to have an API based solution that relies on Proxmox authentication and authorization. This would also allow third party tools such as #ProxLB to provide automated patch management and even handle guest rebalancing in a way that is similar to DRS without requiring direct SSH access.#Linux #OpenSource #PatchManagement #Security #DevOps #Automation #Ansible #PVE #PVE8 #PVE9

It's hard for me to explain the degree to which I irrationally hate this.
I view sudo password checks in #Debian as an "are you sure?" good faith question to save me from a moment of careless stupid. (Doesn't always work but a good compromise.)
This feels like Apple wishes they didn't HAVE to let me use the computer the way I want, but the lawyers made them provide a loophole.
The vaunted MacOS UI/UX is mediocre compared to last time I used it. Why are people paying for this?
Last night, I successfully installed #Debian using a decades-old #DEC #vt510 #serial #terminal. And then, of course, set it up for daily use. My blog post at https://changelog.complete.org/archives/10886-installing-and-using-debian-using-my-decades-old-genuine-dec-vt510-serial-terminal explains how.

Maybe someone finds it useful as well.
After a #debian upgrade to Trixie #Signal refuses to start:
"Database error"
"Access on the key of the encyryption of the Database is not possible as the encryption-keyring-backend was changed on the upgrade of kwallet5 to kwallet6.
How do i now get Signal to drop the old database and just create a new one?
I don't really care for any old messages in there.

Our August 2025 Debian Contributions report is out! We have updates on preparing for the setup.py install deprecation in setuptools, Salsa CI, the Debian 13 “trixie” release and more.

We thank the organizations subscribing to our Long Term Support contracts (https://www.freexian.com/lts/) and consulting services (https://www.freexian.com/services/) for making this possible.
I have been a #Debian user for over 25 years, and after recent events I am seriously considering switching distros.

Having spent some time on the debian-devel mailing list, I can now say with confidence that while certainly the #Debian developer community does not have a monopoly on assholes, they also certainly do not have a shortage. *sigh*
(This message brought to you by a Debian developer deciding it was important for them to rehash the systemd vs. init flame war on the -devel list yet again, because that's _definitely_ a productive use of all our time.)
question #linux #debian
note : j'utilise gparted

DO NOT UPGRADE TO DEBIAN 13.1 IF YOU ARE USING SYSTEMD-NETWORKD!
I just applied the upgrade on my desktop and systemd-networkd segfaults on startup. I was hoping it was a transient but it fails after a reboot too.

Turbulent experience over the last two days in #Debian Sid. A few crashes and freezes on the desktop, particularly when running firefox. Thankfully, it seems to have stabilized now. I wonder if it has to do with either kernel 6.16 rolling in or a bug in mesa-vulkan drivers? (Which got me to put it on hold temporarily).
Either way, I think I should update my ol' notes about daily-driving Debian (and #Devuan) unstable. I learned *a lot* over the last 2 years I've been doing it.
Last weekend, we reached another milestone in our efforts to have all Debian packages versioned in Salsa (Debian's GitLab instance). Out of around 39000 packages, less than 2000 are not in Salsa! Check https://trends.debian.net/#vcs-hosting for some cool graphs #debian #salsa #09
Finally a new video out... it has been some time. 🙂
Setting up phpSysInfo on #Debian
