I'm running some tests on my old and trusted Raspberry Pi A+.
I've installed Raspbian - latest release, lite version. At the prompt, it's using 92 MB of RAM, mainly due to systemd and NetworkManager. As soon as you use it (even just for apt), it starts swapping and becomes almost unusable. It took 5 minutes just to install Python.

I tried NetBSD (on the same memory card): 35 MB of RAM used (including Postfix!) and it's totally usable.

Right; mail server upgraded to #debian Trixie; I did it by recreating it in a local VM first; package install to match, and then tested a restore from my encrypted backups - which was a good exercise in its self. Then a dist-upgrade; fixing up Dovecot was the hairiest bit - they've randomly changed the name of a bunch of options. mail_location is now mail_driver/home/path/inbox_path and the ssl options have also changed. mbox files are deprecated , but still work for now - job for later.

I've come to the conclusion that, while I am still using #Windows 11 out of inertia, it's time to contemplate an exit plan towards #Linux . The switch won't be any time soon (I have too much other stuff on my plate for the foreseeable future), but I do want to avoid paying further license fees to #Microsoft .

Major areas of concern:

- My #Steam library. I am by no means a heavy gamer, but I want to check if the major games I enjoy are known to work on Linux.
- Migrating away from #GoogleDrive towards #NextCloud is going to be a major chore, but it's something I can start in advance.
- I am a very heavy user of Notepad++ for my #TeXLaTeX typesetting, so I need a replacement whose user experience comes close (and no, neither vim nor emacs count).

As for what distribution to choose... I dunno. Lots of people at my place of work use #Debian , so maybe that would be a good idea?

Por qué usar nvm para configurar un entorno de desarrollo y ejecución Node.js en Linux Debian

TLDR; En Linux Debian, no se pueden instalar paquetes con npm globalmente en el sistema (npm install -g) sin usar sudo. Es una medida de seguridad necesaria que puede provocar problemas de permisos para usuarios sin permisos sudo cuando algún paquete se instala globalmente usando sudo, o que implica tener que instalar cada paquete como dependencia de cada repositorio. Esto puede tener sentido con dependencias del proyecto que se está desarrollando, pero no tanto con paquetes del entorno de desarrollo que se usan en todos los proyectos (linters, revisores de código, typescript…). Esto se soluciona usando nvm que permite crear un entorno Node.js específico para cada usuario del sistema, de manera que los paquetes instalados globalmente son globales para el usuario que los instala. nvm se puede instalar sin usar sudo, así que un usuario no necesita contactar al administrador del sistema.

Instalar Node Version Manager (nvm)

En el repositorio oficial de nvm se puede descargar un script de bash que descarga nvm y añade la configuración necesaria al archivo de perfil del usuario (~/.bashrc, ~/.bash_profile, ~/.zshrc, o ~/.profile). Es recomendable consultar el repositorio para instalar la última versión. En el momento de escribir este tutorial era la 0.40.3:

Para que nvm esté disponible hay que cerrar terminal y abrir una nueva.

Instalar Node Package Manager (npm) usando nvm

Antes de instalar node con nvm puede ser que node esté ya instalada en el sistema de manera global. Para comprobarlo:

$ node -vv20.19.5$ npm -v9.2.0

En Debian Trixie, en el momento de escribir este tutorial, la última versión disponible de node es la 20.19.5, y de npm la 9.2.0.

Para instalar la última versión de node usando nvm:

$ nvm install nodeDownloading and installing node v25.0.0...Downloading https://nodejs.org/dist/v25.0.0/node-v25.0.0-linux-x64.tar.xz...############################################################################################################################################################################ 100.0%Computing checksum with sha256sumChecksums matched!Now using node v25.0.0 (npm v11.6.2)Creating default alias: default -> node (-> v25.0.0)

La primera versión de node instalada con nvm se configura como la versión a usar por omisión.

Si ahora hacemos la comprobación de la versión de node y de npm disponibles por omisión para este usuario:

$ node -vv25.0.0$ npm -v11.6.2

Para otro usuario que no haya instalado nvm, la versiones disponibles seguirán siendo las instaladas desde los repositorios de Debian.

Para instalar una versión específicamente:

$ nvm install 22.21.0Downloading and installing node v22.21.0...Downloading https://nodejs.org/dist/v22.21.0/node-v22.21.0-linux-x64.tar.xz...############################################################################################################################################################################ 100.0%Computing checksum with sha256sumChecksums matched!Now using node v22.21.0 (npm v10.9.4)

Al instalar una nueva versión, ésta se activa automáticamente en esa terminal. Sin embargo, la versión por omisión sigue siendo la primera que se instaló. Múltiples versiones de node pueden convivir para un usuario, que podrá elegir la que quiere usar en cada caso. Para ver todas las versiones instaladas:

$ nvm ls-remote

Para seleccionar una versión de node diferente en un momento dado:

$ nvm use 22.21.0

Instalar paquetes en un entorno node instalado con nvm

Al instalar un paquete de manera global en un entorno node instalado con nvm, el paquete estará globalmente disponible para el usuario:

$ npm install -g @google/gemini-cli

Age makes you more cautious. I used to carry Debian CD's with me & do all my upgrades while in flight without electricity or Internet — just to test myself I could hack my way out of a screwed up GRUB or problematic #Linux build.

I'm taking my spouse's laptop all the way from #Debian buster to trixie this morning (going through bullseye to bookworm first), & I'm actually nervous. I *think* it's just because it's my spouse's machine.

Ironic thing is upgrades are so much safer these days.

Pourquoi quand on installe un paquet, le système prend par défaut les paquets indiqués comme "recommandés" (instruction "Recommends" dans le fichier de contrôle) ?
Est-ce qu'on prend un risque particulier du coup d'utiliser l'option `--no-install-recommends` pour avoir une installation minimale ?

Y'a (commenté) PermitRootLogin prohibit-password (qui me paraît une option acceptable, non ? ça veut bien dire qu'on ne peut s'y connecter qu'avec une clé ssh autorisée ?) mais y'a rien d'autre sur RootLogin, ni commenté ni décommenté...

La LMDE 7 est sortie ! Présentation des nouveautés et procédure de mise à niveau

Bonjour,

Ce mardi 14 Octobre 2025, l’équipe de Linux Mint a annoncé la sortie de la LMDE 7. Les nouveautés sont présentées dans la vidéo ci-dessous d’Adrien Linuxtricks :

En résumé très rapide : Passage à la base Debian 13 avec le noyau LTS 6.12 et ajout de toutes les nouveautés de la Linux Mint 22.2.

Si vous êtes sur la LMDE 6, il est possible de procéder à une mise à niveau en suivant les instructions officielles se trouvant ici (en anglais). A noter que le processus peut être assez long en fonction de votre connexion et de votre matériel.

La procédure est similaire aux mises à niveau majeures que l’on a sur la Linux Mint classique basée sur Ubuntu, dont nous avions vu avec le passage de la version 21.3 à la 22 en Juillet 2024.

Ci-dessous un petit récap des étapes :

Faire toutes les mises à jour proposées par le gestionnaire de mises à jour.

Redémarrer le PC pour appliquer les mises à jour et vérifier que tout est OK
Faire une sauvegarde avant de se lancer : Deux outils sont disponibles pour ça : Timeshift pour le système et MintBackup.
Installer l’outil de mise à niveau « Mintupgade » via la logithèque
Lancer l’outil de mise à niveau via le terminal avec la commande suivante : sudo mintupgrade

Suivre les différentes étapes affichées à l’écran. Si tout ce que est installé provient de la logithèque, aucune alerte devrait être générée durant le processus. En revanche, si vous avez ajouté des dépôts additionnels (mon cas avec Element) alors il vous sera demandé de désactiver les dépôts pour procéder à la mise à niveau et vous aurez le choix de conserver ou non les paquets (je les ai conservé).

Redémarrer votre ordinateur
Au redémarrage, si vous aviez des dépôts additionnels qui ont été désactivés durant la mise à niveau, pensez à les réactiver en allant dans les paramètres système > sources de mise à jour > Dépôts supplémentaires :

Ouvrir le relevé système (via le menu d’applications ou via l’icône avec « ! » à côté de l’horloge) et installer les paquets de langues manquants :

Et voilà, c’est terminé ! Il ne reste plus qu’à profiter de cette nouvelle version de LMDE :

Heads up if you're running #Debian #Forky (a.k.a. Debian Testing) and you have a lot of RAM. The new user-space OOM manager systemd-oomd doesn't treat kernel cache memory as available when calculating memory usage. Another laptop debianized 🍾

I recently bought and #debianized a second hand 11" laptop for my daughter, since she found unconformable bringing the 14" one on her backpack.

This Asus 11" is fairly old, but has a peculiarity that makes it very interesting, it has a touch screen and therefore it is very suitable for her online assignments.

Luckily, through #Debian and #XFCE4, I was able to set up a snap and lean environment, and the laptop goes pretty smooth. The great flexibility of XFCE helped me to build a pseudo-UI that is very suitable for a touch-screen use: the result is convincing and the its use is very intuitive.

I have became very fond about 11" laptop, are very handy — I have actually one that I bring constantly with me — and it is total shame this slice of the market has been totally replaced by (useless) Chromebooks… 😟

The Asus I bought for my daughter still has a vga and an ethernet port, mine does not,these are features that I really missed a lot and you'll never find on Chromebooks. Also Chromebooks are really designed to let very difficult to install any other OS, worst than the usually tricks M$ invents every year.

Now if you want an 11" that is still a computer you have to look on the second-hand market. 🤷‍♂️

On my laptop, I'm using #Gnome 48 in #Debian Trixie, under Wayland. There are two 1080p displays connected, and it also has a 1920p built-in screen which I'm using with 200 % scaling.

If I use Gnome's builtin screenshot tool, all screenshots from the 100 % screens are blurry: It's scaling up the 1080p screens, interpolating pixels.

Here's an example screenshot dragged across both screens, #HiDPI on the left.

The issue is: It's also blurry when screenshotting only a 1080p screen.

Suggestions?

Taking a moment to appreciate that I can take my Pixel Buds out of their case and they automatically connect to my #Debian laptop, and the sound from the video that's currently playing automatically moves to them _and_ the video stops for a split second to re-sync and compensate for Bluetooth latency, _automatically_, without me having to write 100 lines of configs and scripting.

And I _could_ customize all of that, if I really wanted.

2025 really is the year of the Linux Desktop.

J'ai testé le noyau 6.16 backporté dans #Debian.

J'ai toujours 24 entrées IPU6 dans Firefox quand on me demande de choisir ma caméra et rien ne marche.

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) 7 has hit the download mirrors! Here is one at a German university: https://ftp.fau.de/mint/iso/debian/

When I downloaded the ISO image yesterday, it still had beta status. That did not prevent me from installing it on my son's laptop. What follows are first impressions from a mixed father & son perspective.

I switched from MS-DOS straight to GNU/Linux and never used Windows much. My preferred distro is #Debian because it is the universal operating system created by a large, global community. I spend most of my time on the command line.

My son is now ready to give up Windows because support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, and he does not want to upgrade to Windows 11 due to all of the malware it comes with.

He installed and occasionally used Linux Mint (which is based on Ubuntu) on an old computer in the past. As Debian 13 (“trixie”) is quite fresh and also rock-solid, I wanted to give #LMDE another try. Many years ago, my parents used it happily.

LMDE comes with the #Cinnamon desktop which looks a lot like Windows. You can download an official Debian live ISO with Cinnamon pre-installed. I tried it, but it clearly has not been configured quite as lovingly as Linux Mint's. No wonder – Linux Mint developed Cinnamon in the first place.

To my mind, this makes LMDE7 the ideal choice for beginners and pros alike. Installing it (even with full disk encryption) is a breeze – if you give it the entire disk to play with. Try to avoid multi-boot installations if at all possible. If you need Windows later, you can run it in a virtual machine. Be sure to make a complete backup of your Windows system first! We used the free Rescuezilla for this.

So far, we have not run into any issue with LMDE7. OK, there was one gotcha: When configuring automatic backups in Timeshift, do not choose the boot partition as the target. It would fill up very quickly.

#xfce habe ich ewig nicht mehr angeschaut, aber das wurde von Debian halt damals mit der altbackenen Konfiguration vom upstream ausgeliefert, während z.B. #xubuntu das noch selbst aufgehübscht hat.

Today, I'm grateful for #ZFS. I'm grateful that taking snapshots of #bhyve VMs is so easy.

I attempted an update of a #Debian VM from 12 to 13, but I realized a piece of software I need doesn't support Debian 13 just yet (I suspect it will relatively soon.)

I had thought to power the VM off, take a snapshot of it, and then attempt the update.

It wasn't until after the update completed (successfully) that I realized the issue with the third-party software.

I just powered the VM down and reverted back to the snapshot.

It's as if nothing ever happened.

I know, it's a simple feature. Most other virtualization solutions also provide snapshotting. It's just nice that it's integrated into my host OS.

Cómo instalar Virtualbox 7.2 y vagrant 2.4.9 en Debian 13 Trixie

Actualmente en Debian 13, incluso con los repositorios unstable activos la versión más reciente de Virtualbox que se puede instalar es la 7.0. A mí me está dando muchos problemas ya que no se compila bien el kernel 6.16. La única manera que he conseguido de arreglarlo es instalar Virtualbox 7.2. Como uso Vagrant para gestionar las máquinas virtuales creadas con Virtualbox, he necesitado actualizar a Vagrant 2.4.9 ya que las versiones anteriores no son compatibles con Virtualbox 7.2. La versión más reciente en los repositorios de Debian es la 2.3.7, así que la versión 2.4.9 hay que instalarla desde otras fuentes.

Instalar Virtualbox 7.2 en Debian Testing Trixie

Hay que añadir el repositorio de Oracle para poder instalar la última versión 7.2. En la página oficial de Virtualbox se puede encontrar el procedimiento:

deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/oracle-virtualbox-2016.gpg] https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian trixie contrib

En mi caso uso la nueva sintaxis de fuentes de apt. Si es el caso hay que crear el archivo virtualbox.sources en /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ con el siguiente contenido:

Types: debURIs: https://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debianSuites: trixieComponents: contribSigned-By: /usr/share/keyrings/oracle-virtualbox-2016.gpg

Luego hay que descargar la clave pública del repositorio de Oracle y añadirla al keyring de apt:

wget -O- https://www.virtualbox.org/download/oracle_vbox_2016.asc | sudo gpg --yes --output /usr/share/keyrings/oracle-virtualbox-2016.gpg --dearmor

Y por último actualizar los índices de paquetes de apt e instalar Virtualbox 7.2:

sudo apt updatesudo apt install virtualbox

En el repositorio de Oracle están disponibles las versiones 7.1 y 7.2, así que se puede instalar también la 7.1, aunque a mí no me solucionaba el problema.

Instalar Vagrant 2.4.9 en Debian Testing Trixie

Para instalar la versión 2.4.9 de Vagrant hay que añadir el repositorio de hashicorp. En la página de Hashicorp, la empresa que desarrolla Vagrant, se puede encontrar el procedimiento para añadir sus repositorios e instalar Vagrant.

Primero añadir la nueva fuente a apt:

echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/hashicorp-archive-keyring.gpg] https://apt.releases.hashicorp.com $(grep -oP '(?<=UBUNTU_CODENAME=).*' /etc/os-release || lsb_release -cs) main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/hashicorp.list

En mi caso, de nuevo, con la nueva sintaxis de apt, en vez del comando anterior hay que crear el archivo vagrant.sources en /etc/apt/sources.list.d/:

Luego hay que descargar la clave pública del repositorio de Hashicorp y añadirla al keyring de apt:

wget -O - https://apt.releases.hashicorp.com/gpg | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/hashicorp-archive-keyring.gpg

Actualizamos ahora los índices de paquetes de apt:

sudo apt updatesudo apt install vagrant

En mi caso, como tengo configurado también el repositorio unstable de Debian para ciertos paquetes, para poder instalar vagrant desde el repositorio de hashicorp es necesario darle a éste prioridad sobre el unstable, porque si no se seguirá teniendo como última versión la 2.3.7 y no la 2.4.9. Para ello hay que incluir la excepción en un archivo con un nombre cualquiera, por ejemplo vagrant.preferences, en la carpeta /etc/apt/preferences.d/:

Package: vagrantPin: release a=trixiePin-Priority: 1200

El valor de Pin-Priority tiene que ser mayor que el del repositorio unstable.

Para instalarlo:

sudo apt install -t trixie vagrant

The sequence of errors seems to be:

* `apt-listbugs` is installed (useful when I was riding testing).
* #Ansible does not provide stdin or tty when doing things with `apt`.
* `apt-listbugs` pins packages way down when they have a bug and can't get an answer from the user.

That's annoying

The #Debian stable security-update channel for dovecot upgrades from 2.3 to 2.4, and the 2.3 configuration file format is not compatible with 2.4.

Don't upgrade dovecot to 2.4 until you have time to fix the configuration file.

Right now when I type a backtick ("`") in a #GitHub #Markdown input box in #Firefox 143.0.4 (deb packaged by Mozilla) on #Debian #Linux (Testing) in #GNOME, instead of it just being displayed as a backtick, it's being displayed as an accent on the following character.
See screenshots for what I mean.
Not happening in Chrome, or on Windows, or in text input boxes on at least one other website I tried.

Est-ce qu'il y a un moyen sous Debian (Mate idéalement) de désactiver spécifiquement les touches du bas du touchpad ?
Celles de mon T430 semblent matériellement mortes et donc elles produisent un comportement bizarre, mais celles haut fonctionnent (mais subissent les conséquences du comportement bizarre donc je dois désactiver tout, ce qui n'est pas pratique).

#Debian #armel has reached end of life with the release of #trixie and will not be included in #forky (already being removed from sid).

Unfortunately, that means e-waste for the affected devices, such as several older #RPi editions (unless switching to Raspian, which may or may not even work or support them for longer and is effort anyway).

armel has not been part of #LTS and #ELTS for a while, but this was not a problem as it’s a minority architecture and users could always upgrade (btw, if your armel box is still running bookworm, you’ll want to be on trixie by 2026-06-10).

I asked for it to be included in trixie LTS and ELTS, so that the old hardware can be used mostly securely until about 2035 instead of 2028, and the limiting factor for this is not will or infrastructure but funding. (While most security fixes aren’t specific to one of the architectures in question, there’s still some overhead, and armel is often slower to build and may need some more hand-holding than the newer armhf and arm64, so I believe that funding is actually needed.)

I’m just a private individual running one box with it I got as a gift, so I cannot offer much, but if you care about Debian and can offer funding, please approach @freexian (who organise LTS and offer ELTS as a separate-from-Debian offer) about this (and specifically mention armel).

If someone has connections to organisations involved in devices that cannot run armv7 hardfloat Debian or better, such as the #Raspberry Pi foundation, please ask them to contribute to #Freexian in the same way, so we can have proper Debian on these devices for seven years longer than planned.

Seems the Debian uprade fom 12 (Bookworm) to 13 (Trixie) had some unexpected consequences, as the symlinks for /usr/bin/yarn , /usr/bin/yarnpkg and /usr/bin/pnpx were broken. But a quick removal of the defective symlinks plus a "corepack enable" did fix those shims again :-)

Since ifupdown handles only the most basic of configurations, I went with the strategy of a systemd service to call a shell script in oneshot to set up the bridge devices and all the VLANs, then use the dhcpcd service to manage the address configuration. That actually all works great... except that resolv.conf doesn't get generated properly on boot. dhcpcd is calling resolvconf -a correctly, as resolvconf -l shows all the configuration populated. Calling -a is supposed to update resolv.conf immediately if updates are enabled, so the fact that it isn't tells me this is a classic race condition on startup. I can run resolvconf -u as soon as I log in and the file gets generated. So much for dependency management.

I've uploaded a version of xdg-desktop-portal-phosh with the #Rust based portal enabled to #Debian experimental.

This finally gives @mobian users adaptive account and app chooser portals (contributed by @arunmani ).

Thanks to @debian 's Rust maintainers all needed crates were already packaged.

The next upload will target unstable but we want to have the current version in unstable migrate first to avoid removal from #forky.

amies et amis qui bouffent du #terminal au petit dej, je cherchais un moyen de faire une commande qui m'ouvre un ensemble de terminaux disposés d'une certaine façon via un script, mais j'ai l'impression que je cherche à faire un truc de ouf prévu par aucun emulateur de terminal.

genre je lance une commande, ça ouvre #ghostty, qui ouvre un dossier qui lance une commande pour être root, ça se divise en deux horizontalement, on passe le focus à la partie à droite pour aller dans un dossier de projet actuel donné et lancer un git pull, un qui fait une connec ssh donnée, un qui fait un btop.

je trouve pas comment nommer ce genre de truc pour obtenir un tuto ou un script d'exemple.

I've been having a problem with Google Chrome and Chromium crashing the display in Debian 13 on my 2011 iMac.

You can get half the fix by running an Xorg session, where it doesn't crash but artifacts appear.

The full fix is turning off graphics (hardware) acceleration in the browser at chrome://settings/system.

After turning off graphics (hardware) acceleration, the browser runs fine in Wayland and Xorg.

Hey #Proxmox community! I would like to hear your thoughts on how you usually update your Proxmox nodes and clusters. How do you handle minor Proxmox and #Debian package upgrades with #APT?

What would you think about a new API endpoint that lets you run unattended upgrades with a simple call like:

/nodes/{node_name}/apt/upgrade

At the moment you need to use the node’s HTML5 console to perform upgrades. Other methods exist such as running unattended Debian upgrade scripts, using patch management tools like #Spacewalk or #QualvoSec, or automating the process with #Ansible over SSH. My idea is to have an API based solution that relies on Proxmox authentication and authorization. This would also allow third party tools such as #ProxLB to provide automated patch management and even handle guest rebalancing in a way that is similar to DRS without requiring direct SSH access.
I have already been running this approach on several internal clusters since the release of PVE 8 without issues. Now I am interested to hear if you would use unattended upgrades in general or if you are already running them today.

It's hard for me to explain the degree to which I irrationally hate this.

I view sudo password checks in #Debian as an "are you sure?" good faith question to save me from a moment of careless stupid. (Doesn't always work but a good compromise.)

This feels like Apple wishes they didn't HAVE to let me use the computer the way I want, but the lawyers made them provide a loophole.

The vaunted MacOS UI/UX is mediocre compared to last time I used it. Why are people paying for this?

"Database error"
"Access on the key of the encyryption of the Database is not possible as the encryption-keyring-backend was changed on the upgrade of kwallet5 to kwallet6.

How do i now get Signal to drop the old database and just create a new one?

Après l'avoir formatée, je crée sur une clé USB une partition ext4 de 8 Go, ou 10Go, ou 15Go, et je n'ai systématiquement que 4,1 Go "inutilisé" dans cette partition.
Et j'ai le même résultat sur mes deux clés USB.
Est-ce uniquement un problème avec mes clés qui seraient pourries ? Ou pourrait-il y avoir un pb dans ce que je fais ?

If you run Debian 13 + systemd-networkd + bridging you are going to have a very bad day if you do a stable update of systemd

(It will segfault leaving you with no network)

Update: as pointed out by Colin you also have to be using VLANs.

I just applied the upgrade on my desktop and systemd-networkd segfaults on startup. I was hoping it was a transient but it fails after a reboot too.

Turbulent experience over the last two days in #Debian Sid. A few crashes and freezes on the desktop, particularly when running firefox. Thankfully, it seems to have stabilized now. I wonder if it has to do with either kernel 6.16 rolling in or a bug in mesa-vulkan drivers? (Which got me to put it on hold temporarily).

Either way, I think I should update my ol' notes about daily-driving Debian (and #Devuan) unstable. I learned *a lot* over the last 2 years I've been doing it.

I have #Debian #Linux running on my 15-year-old laptop, with the full #KDE Plasma 6 bells-and-whistles setup.

With the exception of web browsers and programming tools, this system's performance is about the same as #KDEPlasma 4 on similar hardware 15 years ago. All the fancy new features since then have had a performance cost of basically zero.

Finally migrated my small #partkeepr instance to #partdb, so I can now shut down that old #Debian Stretch VM 😄

The migration went fairly well although the result needed some adjustments, but that's to be expected.

Globally very satisfied with it, except regarding the part info page, which forces you to constantly switch between "tabs" to access basic info, while a good two thirds of the screen stays empty.

J’ai décidé de changé de bureau pour ma debian 12 (oui, je sais, bientôt) et de passer à KDE.

Plasma, c’est super différent de gnome, mais ça va.

Le seul truc qui coince, c’est #Signal qui est toujours connecté à --password-store=“gnome-libsecret”, mais qui ne s’ouvre plus du tout sous KDE où les mots de passe sont gérés pas Kwallet5.

C’est un peu chiant et je ne sais pas trop quoi faire.

Sinon, à mon install initiale de debian 12 il y a 2 ans, j’avais laissé le bousin partitionner tout seul et là, je me retrouve avec une partition / de 30 Go pleine jusqu’à la gueule, ce qui me fait un peu chier et m’empêche d’upgrader vers debian 13.

Là aussi, je ne sais pas trop quoi faire.

The weekend is coming to the end. So, to say about #Debian 13:

1. Wayland with Nvidia cards is still not that of an option. I'm not doing FrankenDebian.

2. (this one is funny) In 2012, to play "Emperor: Battle for Dune" I had to tinker with PulseAudio. I remember it well, for a newbie was quite an experience. To play whatever I played yesterday, the year is 2025, I had to tinker with PipeWire.

Other than that, let it stay.

P.S. texlive-full is 400+ packages and over 8 GB. Uff!

P.P.S. GNOME defaults, as out-of-the-box, are not as seamless as on Fedora.

I still use it myself, but I've not allocated much time for it in recent years. Now I'm curious if anyone else uses it?

Out of sheer curiosity, my wife just set up her first #Linux on a computer via the #Debian 13 #Trixie netinstall: https://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ via USB thumb drive I provided for her.

I was sitting nearby but she accomplished the task all by herself. I just explained what "LVM" means as this was not explained properly by the Debian installer.

Quelles sont les différences entre Linux Mint et LMDE ?

Bonjour,

Il m’arrive régulièrement de voir des personnes se demander quelles sont les différences entre Linux Mint (basée sur Ubuntu) et la LMDE (basée sur Debian). Il est vrai qu’au premier abord, elles se ressemblent beaucoup :

A gauche Linux Mint 22.1 et à droite LMDE 6

Je vous propose donc de faire le tour des différences ! Cela peut notamment être utile pour choisir celle à installer par exemple.

La première différence qui saute aux yeux, c’est au moment du téléchargement. En effet, la LMDE n’est proposée qu’avec l’environnement de bureau Cinnamon alors que Linux Mint a 3 choix : Cinnamon, MATE et Xfce.

La seconde est la base utilisée qui aura un impact sur les versions de certains paquets et applications fournies par défaut et provenant des dépôts d’Ubuntu ou Debian.

Par exemple, LibreOffice qui est fourni par défaut aura une version différente :

Linux Mint 22 arrive avec une version 24.2.
LMDE 6 quant à elle propose la 7.4.

A noter que les logiciels fournis directement par Mint, comme Firefox ou Warpinator ont des versions similaires.

En dehors des logiciels, le cœur même du système, c’est à dire le noyau arrive avec des versions différentes, ce qui peut avoir un impact sur la prise en charge du matériel :

Linux Mint 22 : 6.8
LMDE 6 : 6.1

Et en parlant de noyau, il y a une autre différence significative. Celui de la LMDE reste sur une même version alors que celui de Linux Mint est voué à évoluer au fil du temps. Par exemple, la version 22.2 qui est actuellement en Beta pousse le 6.14 (pour une nouvelle installation).

La Linux Mint base Ubuntu propose également un outil graphique permettant d’installer facilement un noyau plus récent. Depuis la Linux Mint 22.1, je peux déjà installer le 6.11 et même le 6.14 si je le souhaite :

Une autre différence qui pourrait vite sauter aux yeux des personnes réalisant l’installation d’une Linux Mint et d’une LMDE, c’est que l’installateur n’est pas le même. Ci-dessous, la première page de l’installateur :

Installateur LMDE 6

Un autre outil graphique manquant dans la LMDE est celui concernant la gestion des drivers, utile notamment pour les cartes graphiques Nvidia :

Dernier point et pas des moindres, les cycles de mises à jour sont différents :

LMDE : propose une nouvelle version tous les 2 ans. Le support de l’ancienne version s’arrête assez rapidement après la sortie d’une nouvelle version, ce qui nécessite de procéder à une mise à niveau tous les deux ans. En revanche, il n’y a pas mise à niveau mineure, toutes les nouveautés provenant de Mint sont poussées au fur et à mesure via les mises à jour classiques.
Linux Mint : chaque version majeure (exemple : 22) est supportée 5 ans et une nouvelle version majeure est proposée tous les 2 ans. Entre chaque version majeure, des versions mineures (22.1 par exemple) sont proposées tous les 6 mois environ. Ces versions mineures permettent de pousser les nouveautés faites par l’équipe de Linux Mint. En revanche, rien n’oblige d’y passer dessus jusqu’à la mise à niveau majeure.

En espérant que ces explications vous permettront d’y voir plus clair et de faire le choix qui vous correspond le mieux !

I subscribe to the lists in the rare occurrence I do post a question (more of the case with #Debian than #FreeBSD). I remain subscribed because it's more convenient than reading the archives.

However, it's not just freebsd-questions that was the source of the email tsunami, it was the combination of the other eight subscribed lists, plus a lot of them while I was expecting actual *discussions* are just automated notifications of bugfixes and reports, and then combined with only dwindling time per week to check email. What used to be the opportunity for several hours per day using email has become only a couple hours per week, at most.

That's great there are active bugfixes but I am more interested in discussions. I am specifically referencing freebsd-desktop and freebsd-doc lists.

Debian 13 : Nouveautés et mise à niveau

Bonjour,

Debian 13 est sortie le 9 Août dernier ! L’occasion de parler à nouveau de cette distribution que je suis toujours avec attention ! En effet, comme évoqué ici, Debian avec l’environnement de bureau KDE pourrait être mon choix pour remplacer Linux Mint. Par ailleurs, j’avais installé Debian 12 sur un PC et l’est utilisée quelques temps, ce qui m’a permis de faire un retour plus complet à ce sujet.

A noter que Debian sert également de base à d’autres distributions comme LMDE ou encore Emmabuntüs, ce qui fait que ces distributions vont bénéficier des nouveautés/évolutions introduites dans la version 13 prochainement.

Pour connaître les nouveautés de cette Debian 13, je vous propose la vidéo ci-dessous d’Adrien Linuxtricks :

Si vous êtes sur Debian 12, notez que vous pouvez y rester jusqu’en 2028 ! Bien entendu, il est possible de passer à la version 13 et pour cela, il est recommandé de lire le guide publié par Debian pour que tout se déroule correctement.

De mon côté, j’ai effectué la mise à niveau sur une VM installée depuis un bon moment avec l’environnement Xfce. Celle-ci a été appliquée rapidement (15 min environ) mais j’ai rencontré deux soucis mineurs :

Le thème d’icônes est revenu à celui par défaut. Il a fallu que j’aille dans les paramètres sélectionner à nouveau celui que j’avais mis.
Le plugin pour afficher la batterie restante a été supprimé durant la mise à niveau et j’ai dû le remettre en place. J’ai eu un message pour m’informer qu’il y avait un souci avec.

En dehors de ça, tout s’est bien déroulé et le système après la mise à jour est entièrement fonctionnel :

C’est donc reparti pour 2 ans !

They don't know much yet, so they are going to ask really basic questions. If you're KIND, you might get some to give it a try and stick to it bc they know they can ask for help. If you're unkind, you're showing them using Linux will be *worse* than Windows. If you can't bring yourself to be kind, then SAY NOTHING. Let others pick up that slack.

long story short i ended up making a fresh Trixie install, which took 1-2h total, after spending a good 6h trying to figure that out... with dependency hell on a systemd-resolved that was _not_ installed in what appeared to have been a badly updated (!) system....

lessons learned: i think i dislike systemd even more now, and will stick to devuan on my main machine.... debian still r0x though.

Those of you upgrading #Debian 'cloud' images to Trixie: if you are using static IPs in your VMs (say, to talk to your bridge), the updated 'cloud-init' will drop a a '50-cloud-init in your /etc/network/interfaces.d/ defining DHCP for ifup. And so while your VM will dist-upgrade fine, you'll lose contact on reboot. Eek.

To fix, put 'network: {config: disabled}' in an '/etc/cloud/cloud.cfg.d/99-custom.cfg', or just dot-prefix the ''50-cloud-init'' & your static net will come up fine #sysadmin

I started of thinking "I could never use that daily", and in the end, what I currently use isn't newer than Debian 13, so... yeah. Debian 13 is good.

Hmm that was a fight.
Upgraded my webserver container to #debian trixie - easy (once I'd remembered how many nspawn setup worked).
Updated host Ubuntu VM - easy.
It reminds me it's still on #Ubuntu 22.04 and I should upgrade to 24.04 ...erm sure..
hmm, no networking...
systemd-networking had decided to add a default route to my nspawn bridge so nothing got out; it looks like I had a 'Gateway=' entry in the bridge config which didn't cause a problem on 22.04 but did on 24.04 - shrug.

If you host #Jellyfin on #Debian, they have updated their repositories to contain the native builds for Trixie. You can enable the repo in Debian with:

extrepo enable jellyfin

Or, if you already have the Jellyfin repo added, just make sure it's pointing to "Trixie" and not "Bookworm" and it should auto update your packages.

Anyone updated a very standard debian desktop install to Trixie, finding it unable to resolve (yes, it _is_ DNS!).

DNS servers manually input in (stupid) default network manager graphical configuration tools (also manually set in stone in /etc/resolv.conf) can be pung... but no resolution happens...

De mes premiers pas avec #Ubuntu à l'adoption de #Debian : 20 ans d'aventures #Linux.
En 2006, j'ai fait mes premiers pas dans l'univers Linux avec Ubuntu 6.x. J'ai découvert les interfaces #Gnome et #Unity, avant de m'orienter vers la légèreté de #Xubuntu avec #Xfce.
L'aventure s'est poursuivie avec Linux #Mint, où j'ai passé de longues années entre Xfce et #Cinnamon. Et en 2025, c'est finalement Debian qui a conquis mon bureau avec son interface Gnome.

Des années que je vante les mérites de #linux auprès de madame sans soulever plus d'intérêt que ça.

Il a suffi d'un message plein écran au démarrage disant globalement :
- fin du support de #windows10 en octobre prochain
- votre ordinateur n'est pas compatible avec #windows11
- achetez un nouvel ordinateur
Et là madame qui me demande de lui installer linux sur son PC, ce qui je me suis empressé de faire.

Des rois de la stratégie chez Microsoft 🤣

Et quelle est la bonne taille pour la partition EFI pour un disque chiffré (donc la partition ne pourra pas être agrandie après )?
J'avais lu 32 Mo et par précaution j'avais prévu 200 Mo mais on me dit que grub va être remplacé par systemd-boot et que donc il faut prévoir beaucoup plus...
