A little industrial PC rescued from the e-waste… I saw this rebadged Technologic Systems TS-7670 in the e-waste bin at work.

These machines are built around a Freescale i.MX286 which is an ARMv5 CPU. Not amazing these days, in fact I think #Debian have abandoned the `armel` platform… I do have one in the rack running #Gentoo though, and did once attempt to coax #AlpineLinux onto one. (Had to bootstrap it from Gentoo, got it booting, then `apk` promptly uninstalled the entire OS.)

I badly need to update the OS on the one I have, so having a second to test a kernel port on will be helpful. Why was this one in the e-waste?

I plugged it in, and noticed it seemed to be dead as a doornail. Plugged into the console port, and it was spitting out a hexadecimal error code: 0x8020a012. Life, but not as we know it.

Powered off, pulled the microSD out, it didn't even enumerate.

Grabbed a spare 8GB one, flashed it with an OS… I note /dev/ttyAMA0 doesn't seem to receive my keystrokes, but I now have it booting Debian 12. So it's alive, just a dead SD card. So I have a guineapig for a new OS. I'll have to dust-off my U-Boot port and kernel tree that I made for these things.

My favourite feature of #macBooks that neither #Linux nor #Windows have is it starting to transparently in the background sync the memory to disk when the battery is running low.

Ok, a lot of things start to feel extremely slow while it is doing that, but compared to Windows and Linux it just prepares itself for running out of battery and lets the user continue working until the very end.

That's a way superior user experience than both shutting down and (visibly) hibernating.

Pues he instalado Vocalinux para dictar cosas (speech to text) y ni tan mal. Eso sí me he echado unas risas con las pruebas, en automático me ha detectado que hablo chino, será por el hola y me ha transliterado un maullido del gato. Pero el resto bien, incluso me pone los puntos y las comas en su sitio.

Está basado en Whisper.cpp y en mi ordenador va suavito, incluso cuando lo uso en Libre Office.

Eine Reihe von #Linux Distros habe ich jetzt ausprobiert und letztlich entschieden, nochmal #Manjaro in der #i3wm Version eine Chance zu geben. Seit Stunden richte ich es nun ein. Sogar zur #tty musste ich zwischendurch wechseln, weil ich mir 'nen Knoten gebastelt hatte. Langsam nimmt das ganze aber Gesicht an. Ist bis jetzt "nur" das Notebook, was dafür herhalten muss. Damit hat sich #ArchLinux doch wieder gegen #Debian durchgesetzt. So sei es dann eben…

Wenn Anwendungen nicht mehr gepflegt werden, kann man manchmal auf eigene Entwicklungen zurückgreifen. Noch besser wird es, wenn die #Community einsteigt.

Die grossen Anwendungen sind beständig und werden gut gepflegt, weil dahinter im besten Fall ein grosses Team steht. Ich meine Anwendungen wie Gimp, LibreOffice, VLC, Thunderbird usw. Selbstverständlich ist mir bekannt, dass auch solche Anwendungen unter dem Nebraska-Problem...

Not against #Fedora, #Linux, or even @UniversalBlue at all, but I don't recommend using Linux on laptops at all.

On desktops? Yeah, it works great. On Laptop, however, I've never got someone who said that his laptops works flawlessly. There is always a catch: webcams, ports, trackpad, speakers, suspend/hibernation.

I'll always recommend a #MacBook instead, over any Linux laptop that is not 100% certified to work.

@fflyn Me....buying a #Windows laptop? No way! 🙂

I *think* I may have fixed everything. Just keeping an eye on it for now. First, for the charging issue I needed to install critical firmware updates via fwupdmgr.

Then, for the random freezes and 15 second keyboard lag, which were attributed to the #Ryzen Strix Point being too new with the #kernel not fully supporting it, I needed to make changes to /etc/default/grub, reload the configuration file, power down, and then reset the EC by holding down the power button for 60 seconds while it booted.

I never expected or experienced something like this on Linux before or a brand new machine. I feel like #Lenovo dropped the ball when it came to the integration. The #Ubuntu OEM image is stock and I needed to install a handful of low level tools to fix this. I suspect if I had bought a ThinkPad T series machine with an Intel chip (with #Linux) then I wouldn't have run into such issues.

For the kind of money I spent, honestly, it's unacceptable.

Spent some time fighting with #OBS Studio on #Fedora on a new install because it wouldn't show me hardware video acceleration even though I knew it should.
Turns out, for anyone who cares, its because the #flatpak version has all the features compiled in and the distro version doesn't. Ugh.
I hate needing to use flatpak when it shouldn't be necessary.

cmark

cmark is the C reference implementation of CommonMark, a rationalized version of Markdown syntax with a spec. (For the JavaScript reference implementation, see commonmark.js.)

It provides a shared library (libcmark) with functions for parsing CommonMark documents to an abstract syntax tree (AST), manipulating the AST, and rendering the document to HTML, groff man, LaTeX, CommonMark, or an XML representation of the AST. It also provides a command-line program (cmark) for parsing and rendering CommonMark documents.

Advantages of this library:

• Portable. The library and program are written in standard C99 and have no external dependencies. They have been tested with MSVC, gcc, tcc, and clang.
• Fast. cmark can render a Markdown version of War and Peace in the blink of an eye (127 milliseconds on a ten year old laptop, vs. 100-400 milliseconds for an eye blink). In our benchmarks, cmark is 10,000 times faster than the original Markdown.pl, and on par with the very fastest available Markdown processors.
• Accurate. The library passes all CommonMark conformance tests.
• Standardized. The library can be expected to parse CommonMark the same way as any other conforming parser. So, for example, you can use commonmark.js on the client to preview content that will be rendered on the server using cmark.
• Robust. The library has been extensively fuzz-tested using american fuzzy lop. The test suite includes pathological cases that bring many other Markdown parsers to a crawl (for example, thousands-deep nested bracketed text or block quotes).
• Flexible. CommonMark input is parsed to an AST which can be manipulated programmatically prior to rendering.

Ich stehe ja mittlerweile auf Dateiübertragungstools wie Croc oder Wormhole.

Praktischerweise lassen die sich auch auf einem heimischen Raspi o.ä. installieren und man kann Daten aller Größe quer durch das Internet verteilen ohne auf eine Cloud o.ä. angewiesen zu sein.

Lediglich ein Client muss installiert sein und einen Code der über einen belieben Messenger, Chat o.ä. geteilt werden kann. Für Wormhole sogar mit einer ganz guten GUI.

Nach gut 3 Stunden war #CachyOS dann auch endlich mit der Installation fertig. Nach dem obligatorischen Neustart freue ich mich auf ein jungfräuliches, unbelastetes neues System, doch alles was ich bekomme, ist den Login-Prompt an der tty. 🤬

Oh, was bin ich am kochen und würde gerne so richtig ausfallend werden und auch nicht vor der Gürtellinie halt machen.

Aber ich bin jetzt einfach zu müde dafür und will meine restliche Energie nicht an Schrott vergeuden.

Whenever I need to run an operating system on obsolete computing hardware, I find the smallest distribution Puppy Linux comes into mind.
The last number of years Slitaz has been doing an enormously great job keeping my old hardware to chug along.

I am happy with how this turned out.

This is for a local startup business that wants an internal wiki (asked for mediawiki) and the ability to have more php-mariadb (mysql) custom web apps.

Why a GUI for a server? Just in case it is needed. I am not going to be doing all the work and I want it as easy as possible to use. Linux Mint Debian Edition is a good fit, as then I can just treat it like a Debian server. That's similar to a lot of the other Linux consulting I do.

I have a hard disk drive for versioned backup. Configured Time Shift to back up everything to it. Seems to work well, as I can browse the Timeshift snapshot in the file browser.

I also set up MediaWiki for them. Learned a few things there. I had to set a root mariadb password. I customized it with a logo and also made some other adjustments to the MediaWiki LocalSettings.php file.

Using Legacy Boot ended up working well for me. I was not able to get UEFI booting working on this Dell Optiplex 5040 with the boot drive in the m.2 slot on the motherboard.

So I just used Legacy Boot and that solved my problem.

I'm glad that more people are adopting and using #Linux, especially on the desktop, but poor security practice has been normalized.

In prep for the Windows 12 rollout, now is a good time to get your town's Linux Install Parties planned and advertised.

Here's a quick how-to guide to spinning one up in your town:

Goals:
- Install Linux on your neighbors' laptops. This preserves older laptops ( #permacomputing #ewaste prevention). This removes people from one part of the surveillance economy. And it saves people money.
- The party should be geared towards NON-TECHIES. This is NOT a Linux Users Group. This is not for enthusiasts. This for folks who just want their computer to work and let them do the basics. Bend the tech to the people, not the people to the tech.

Date and Time:
- Shoot for monthly parties. Try for a specific day of the week. Say the "First Saturday" or "Second Sunday" of every month.
- Easy for folks to remember and if they miss one month, they'll be there the next month
- Try for between two hours to four hours for the event.
- Be consistent. Show up for the full time even if no one shows up. Some times it takes two or three meetings before people start to come regularly.

Location:
- Shoot for a public community area
- The best bet is your local library if they have rooms or conference areas.
- City community centers are good, too
- Also look for religious institutions, civic orgs, or fraternal orgs if need be. It needs to be open to
the public, though, with no requirements to push other agendas on to visitors.

Linux Distro:
- Shoot for a single distro that caters to folks who are new. I usually go for Linux Mint, but go with what you like. Focus on ease of use and familiarity for folks who arent used to Linux or various Desktop Environments.

Waivers & Backups:
- Everyone should sign a waiver. You keep the signed waiver. They can have a copy of the waiver
- Explain that while you and other volunteers will make your best attempt to install Linux, you make no guarantees. You may brick their machine accidentally. And no files that were on the harddrive will remain. Everything will be deleted.
- They should make backups of their files before you start the install process (either online/cloud, or local on a USB)
- Some folks want you to try for a dual-boot, but thats up to you if you want to offer it. Still let them know that you might brick the machine even (especially?) if you try for a dual boot install.

Advertisements:
- Create a simple brochure website and fliers with info and time and date
- Use words like "Update to a modern, private, and fast operating system. No monthly subscription. No cost. Volunteers will install for you." Appeal to folks whose laptops cant upgrade. "Can't install Windows 11 or 12? Don't throw your laptop away, install Linux. It's free, up to date, and secure" Etc etc.
- Use your town's local social media (eg Town Subreddit, Online/Offline Classifieds, Library Announcements, Town Events Page)
- Post fliers in various coffee shops, libraries, bars, restrooms, and community centers
- Tell other similar groups (hacker spaces, maker spaces, linux groups, etc) both to spread the word and get volunteers
- Word of Mouth: Just tell everyone you run into. And tell them to tell everyone they know.

What to bring:
- Multiple install media/USBs with your Distro on it to install on the laptops
- A couple "Demo Laptops" with your distro of choice installed for people to try out (install games, office suites, common programs for folks to try it out - aim for what people use so various browsers including Firefox and Chrome, Zoom / Teams, LibreOffice, MS Office on browser, browser games, desktop games, etc)
- Your own laptops to do internet lookups and specialized downloads (weird stuff happens - its good to be prepared)
- Extension cables and power strips
- Cheap USBs for last minute backups prior to installation that folks can take home with them
- Some screwdrivers or tools to open up laptops for light repair if you like

What to do:
- Greet folks as they come in and invite them to try out the demos
- Encourage questions and discussions (AVOID DISTRO FLAME WARS OR WHICH WINDOWS MANAGER BEATS WHAT DESKTOP ENVIRONMENT FOR FUCKS SAKE! THESE ARE NORMAL PEOPLE DONT SCARE THEM AWAY WITH YOUR NERD SHIT!!!!)
- If folks brought laptops for installation explain and have them sign their waivers, make sure they know all files will be deleted, ask if they've made backups, and then install!
- Help folks troubleshoot issues or install programs for those that already have Linux installed and need community support

That's it. Make it a regular occurrence and you'll get folks coming in for fresh installs monthly and to ask for help with previous installs. Also a really chill way to meet other folks and have a lovely afternoon.

Edit to add: The Windows 12... scare?... seems to be a hoax brought upon by AIslop. But there will be a Win12 at some point, and a 13, and so on. So, honestly, still in prep for the Windows12 rollout, whenever it comes, get a Linux Install Party going now.

Die Tests liefen erstaunlich gut. Obwohl WLAN keine Verzögerungen, alles klappt wie bei einem üblichen Zweitmonitor.

Man kann sich auch für "Hochkant" entscheiden, um z. B. ein PDF auf den zweiten Schirm zu ziehen, eine Taskanwendung dort laufen zu lasen, in Markdown dort Stichpunkte zu tippen usw. usw.

Call me old school but this is one of my biggest gripes with #ubuntu and the #Linux desktop shift over the past two decades:

Disabling root and using sudo for everything. When *properly* configured, sudo is an excellent security policy tool!

BUT...allowing any user to easily gain admin rights with their own password, even temporarily, without properly understanding the system? That is just asking for disaster through poor practice. This is no different than the convenience of #Windows and #MacOS.

Ubuntu's default sudo configuration means the user only needs their password to brick their system.

sudo chown -R 400 /usr/*

This is for a local startup business that wants an internal wiki (asked for mediawiki) and the ability to have more php-mariadb (mysql) custom web apps.

Why a GUI for a server? Just in case it is needed. I am not going to be doing all the work and I want it as easy as possible to use. Linux Mint Debian Edition is a good fit, as then I can just treat it like a Debian server. That's similar to a lot of the other Linux consulting I do.

I have a hard disk drive for versioned backup. Configured Time Shift to back up everything to it. Seems to work well, as I can browse the Timeshift snapshot in the file browser.

I also set up MediaWiki for them. Learned a few things there. I had to set a root mariadb password. I customized it with a logo and also made some other adjustments to the MediaWiki LocalSettings.php file.

On the Dell Optiplex 5040, I did just end up enabling "allow legacy roms" and switching default boot to "legacy" in the Dell BIOS, reinstalling Linux Mint Debian Edition and it just worked.

So Legacy to the rescue!

It sees the m.2 SATA SSD as /dev/sdb and the SATA 3.5" hard drive plugged in with a SATA cable as /dev/sda

I installed grub on /dev/sdb and it still picked it up fine and booted.

I am having trouble getting Linux (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to boot after installing on a Dell Optiplex 5040 and 3040 models with UEFI booting.

I am pretty sure it would work fine in Legacy mode.

Since UEFI is newer, I am guessing that is the recommendation... but will Linux work fine on Legacy boot with current kernels in the current year? Any reasons or features that I really should have with UEFI? Or is Legacy boot going to be fine?

Hello, world!

So far, it's pretty sweet. Incredibly smooth and runs Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS. The last time I ran this distro was version 6.06 - oh my have things changed!

My only complaint is the docking station which I bought at the same time is incompatible(?!?!) with the laptop. The laptop does not have the same joint Thunderbolt 4 and power plugs for the docking station. Would have been nice to know that earlier. 🤦

Auf dem Bild sind zwei Autos zu erkennen. Das linke, ein altes steht für Linux Mint, bei dem der Mechaniker einfach den Ölfilter tauscht, damit die alte Kiste nochmal zwei Jahre länger laufen kann. Der rechte, ein fast neues Fahrzeug lässt sich nicht mehr nutzen, da kein TPM 2.0 verbaut ist. Der im edlen Outfit gekleidete Mechaniker rät zu einem Neukauf!

Polemisch wird es, wenn man der Sprache Rust die Sicherheit abspricht, weil das Projekt eine Designentscheidung geändert hat.

Skuril wird es, wenn behauptet wird, man müsste unterschiedliche Versionen nun mit unterschiedlichen Konfigs versehen.

Manche Menschen wollen einfach mit Gewalt jedwede Änderung als Problem hochstilisieren.

Sagt mal, bin ich blöd oder sonst was?

Ich versuche bei meinem Debian 13 KDE in Dolphin meine Hetzner Storage Box einzubinden. Egal was ich versuche, es klappt nicht. Ich gebe oben in der Adressleiste fish://u123456@u123456.your-storagebox.de:23/backups ein und es öffnet sich die Abfrage der Userdaten. Dort gebe ich als User "u123456" und dann das korrekte Passwort ein. Dann kommt nur die Fehlermeldung, dass keine Verbindung zu dem Rechner aufgebaut werden konnte.
Wenn ich übrigens genau das Gleiche in der Konsole mache funktioniert der Verbindungsaufbau ohne Probleme.

Egal was ich versuche, ich bekomme es nicht hin. Gibt es hier in der Fediverse vielleicht Vollchecker die wissen, was ich verkehrt mache? 😬😎🙄
