Echt jetzt?

LLMs as companions are bad news for the human Psyche. I have contact with a few victims of these LLMs who would rather {talk to} send strings to a mathematical model then speak to a real person. Serious pshychiatirc intervention is needed

I am going to find out also why massive projects, massive open source projects seem not to care about:

                                              • the wasteland that those LLM driven data centers create
                                              • the fact that we cannot buy
                                              • memory
                                              • ssds
                                              • mechanical spinning hard drives
                                              • full computing and household devices

... for nomal prices, because those critical components have been hijacked by data center underlords who can't even get enough permissions to build all those projects in reality

Part of it we all know, it's the LLM bubble, just like the house bubble in the USA some decades ago. Other part is that those underlords dont want us to owe our hardware anymore, so they can tighten their fascistic lock on the computing population.
Look how they want to force even open source OS to age gate the systems so they can get real ID globally

And I enjoy doing things the hard way

I've always done my projects from the bottom up, Linux when many sources needed to be crosscompiled in the alpha days from DOS, which was fun but tedious.
All current BSD flavours can be done that way too, if you still chose to do so, IIRC

Thank you for your enlightning response

Good to know: Ubuntu studio comes with RaySession, a software that allows to save a soft·hard·ware / midi / anything… patch and load it when you want to find back a precise configuration for your live. It also solves lots of trouble if you work with a web browser as a source, as it autoconnects audio contexts to your preferred destination. Thanks to @QuentinJuhel for finding that. Obviously you can download RaySession even if you don’t use Ubuntu Studio.

The Head Programmer of the fantastic and Beautiful curl also uses a large language model in some form, to hunt for bugs, because both he and Greg from the Linux kernel, saw that the LLM used on GitHub is now suddenly much better at finding those pesky bugs.

He's "just a user" in every stereotypical sense of the computer term so needs help for now. He's away from home for work for five days of the week so I'm hoping I can off-load a lot of the fiddly setup stuff for him.

I'm trying out CachyOS in a VM. The installer looks pretty slick.

I noticed it offers btrfs by default [ ☹️ ] but has zfs as an option [ 😍 ] so let's try that to start. Choosing KDE desktop.

In spite of being a fairly thick 2.8GB install ISO it still seems to download a lot over the wire at install time. Kinda sux on my small, metered, Internet connection.

Would've thought more would be on the media, or get to a first boot scenario before downloading a lot of files. What if install fails after downloading all that stuff over a metered connection?

Installer sits at 19% for a very long time with nothing indicating activity. Looking at the router is showing the traffic.

I'm hoping the rolling release nature of the distro is more "curated" than vanilla Arch.

I had to ‘press to click’, which was fine for a while, but I missed just being able to use a light tap on the touchpad to ‘click’.

Looked in KDE settings for touchpad and ‘tap to click’ was already selected, but not actually working.

To get it to work, I had to edit this file:

                                                                                                                                    /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf

                                                                                                                                    and add the line:

                                                                                                                                    Option "Tapping" "True"

in the input class section for my touchpad.

Logged out and then back in again. Now ‘tap to click’ works.

One of the reasons why I stay away from using -next regularly: it includes the mm-unstable/mm-nonmm-unstable branches. I often wonder if that is actually violating the rules for -next inclusion, but I'm not sure[2].

Here are my ideal requirements, though I am willing to compromise (especially on the price, and except the Linux part):

                                                                                                                                                      - Something to use with Krita - I am not a sophisticated artist by any margin, I plan to mostly draw naive, aquarelle- and flat-like comics and text-accompanying images.

                                                                                                                                                      - I prefer to see what I draw on the surface, so with a screen.

                                                                                                                                                      - Price range up to 666€.

                                                                                                                                                      - I use Linux, it should fully work on it.

I used some cheap Wacom in the past, it wasn't half-bad but I don't enjoy staring at a different screen. I've seen Huion Kamvas 16 Gen 3 recommended for my requirements, but I have no idea what I'm doing.

                                                                                                                                                      Any tips welcome!

                                                                                                                                                          Finally found the solution:

This garnered a lot of interest and even a couple of submissions over the weekend.

After chatting with one potential entrant, I realized to my horror that I had uploaded an incorrect version of the scenario data. I replaced the incorrect version Sunday evening and updated the original blog post. But if you grabbed the scenario data before the change, you don't have everything I intended you to have.

Pulled the drive, wiped the remaining, put back in service with minimum fuss as a single drive. I'll throw another spindle at it when drive prices drop again.

The other array had the SSD cache die and it's been chugging along fine ever since. Not a big deal, but from a "experience" point of view it "feels slow" like a working md array.

I don't want to touch the current primary SSD at all, just boot from USB, install Linux, set that new SSD as primary boot partition in the and from then on have the Linux boot manager show up and let me choose which OS I want to boot. I use Linux, but haven't set up in literal decades. Any tips/guides for this specific case?

The batteries are a pain in the T470s, so I do not recommend it unless you are willing to live with that issue. The regular T470 is a much better laptop as far as the batteries and memory upgrades go.

You can run somecommand 2>&1 > log.txt to get STDOUT and STDERR together, but you won't know which is which.
You can run somecommand 2>err.txt >log.txt to get STDOUT and STDERR separate, but you won't know the timing, or which error messages happened between which STDOUT messages.
I'd like to figure out some way to combine both, so you end up with a file like this:

1: this was a STDOUT message

This is a recent development.

It'll have it's usual drive activity light flicks I'd expect at idle. Lock lights respond. SSH usually dies in this state, so I can't do anything that way. Attempting to drop to tty, it remains black screen. (thread continues)

I mean, the reasons are obvious so I will save that for a different time. What really struck me was just how easy it was to actually do it. Problems were minor and mainly due to the fact that I have an Nvidia card in my laptop.

Apps I wanted, (including Steam,) were easy to find and install. There were a couple apps that I needed to find replacements for, like Notepad++.

They’re evidence of a deeper issue: […]" something in me yelled: "This is more nuanced, and people will be drawing the wrong conclusions if they believe this blindly".

Because for the reverts often are a good thing for two entangled reasons:

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  * No "deploy process" can prevent all bugs, so some will only be found in the wild. This, sadly, is especially true for the , as its mostly drivers which are impossible to test properly in a deploy process; the hardware they support furthermore is messy and full of hidden bugs innocent changes can suddenly expose.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  * A quick revert can be the fastest way to ensure that mainline usually remains usable and is tested by people, as "fixing a bug through a follow-up commit" often takes more time than "reverting and reapplying later with the bug fixed"[2].

No prior job experience unfortunately, all those 15 years were mostly personal projects and small-scale stuff for friends. Currently running an entire multi-machine personal cloud infrastructure with a demonstration of all the services I have running at status.highenergymagic.net. Entirely willing to accept entry-level job placements, no expectation of being paid a lot or anything, just want to be doing something and move the needle a little on my current "being broke" status.

I decided to give it a try, enticed by the low cost and this 'alternative solution to Windows', and in late 1996 I ordered this set.

A few months later, though, I decided to give it another go and from that point, I never looked back. Whether it was Linux, one of the BSDs, or something similar (but Unix or Unix-like), I was not going back to systems like Windows.

This, sadly, is especially true for the , as its mostly drivers which are impossible to test properly in a deploy process; the hardware they support furthermore is messy and full of hidden bugs innocent changes can suddenly expose.

Built from source, wrote a small launch script and dwm came up fine with st.

No prior job experience unfortunately. Currently running an entire multi-machine personal cloud infrastructure with a demonstration of all the services I have running at status.highenergymagic.net.
