My initial impression with #FreeBSD in 2006 was quite similar. Of course, #Linux back then was a much different beast than what it has evolved (mutated?) into today.

Had I not pursued Linux system administration as a career, I *probably* would have stuck with FreeBSD.

We can make all the technical comparisons between the two OSes all day long but what drove my interest and enthusiasm are (1) the documentation and (2) the community.

Tut mir leid #ArchLinux, aber diesmal haut es mit uns nicht hin 😭

#WLAN geht zwar inzwischen irgendwie, aber ist unbrauchbar langsam, wie ich das von dir nicht kenne. Trotzdem ruft #claws keine Mails ab.

Und dann die Flut von #gtk-Fehlern, die ich nicht lösen kann.

Früher führten deine Installationen immer zu vorzüglichen Ergebnissen, worauf sich ein sauberes System aufbauen ließ. Aber Verschlechterung ist ja ein allgemeiner Trend.

So werde ich nun den Kampf mit #Manjaro aufnehmen. Es bietet wenigstens eine gut funktionierende Basis. Den ganzen unerwünschten beigepackten Müll muss ich eben mühsam entfernen.

Nein, dazu habe ich überhaupt keine Lust, aber für nicht enden wollende Basteleien ist mir meine Zeit inzwischen zu kostbar geworden.

Schade … Puh, mir graut es vor Manjaro 😱

Yesterday I cleaned up my CX23 and moved all services to my own home server. Although the server consumes more power than the Hetzner instance, it offers significantly more performance. I might only let it run for a few hours at a time and automatically switch it off at night. I'm keeping the StorageBox for my backups, as the price remains unbeatable.

Does anyone have a working configuration for reverse-proxying HTTPS URLs
- using "mode tcp" (no TLS certificates on the Haproxy) AND
- using the "use_backend" configuration do decide which backend to use based on SNI?

So we have https://foo.example.org and https://bar.example.org, both DNS entries pointing to the haproxy.

use_backend foo if { FOO_CONDITION_GOES_HERE }
use_backend bar if { BAR_CONDITION_GOES_HERE }
default_backend foo

No matter which condition we try, we always fall back to the default backend.
Removing the `default_backend` we get errors for all connection attempts. So clearly the conditions are wrong.

We tried `req_ssl_cni foo.example.org` as the condition inside the curly braces.
We tried `ssl_fc_sni_end foo.example.org`.
We tried `req.ssl_cni foo.example.org`.
We tried with -i and with "-m end".
We tried the complete URL (some.service.foo.example.org) or only the domain.

Any ideas, anyone?

I still can't even that my now nearly 80 year old mom has been on Fedora on a thinkpad e520 (2011) for a decade and it all just works.

I checked her laptop just now and it's fully up to date on fedora 43, so she's done like 20 version upgrades autonomously too. The battery has degraded a little but the whole thing still works fine and she's very happy with it.

This is how things should be, this is peak computing tbh.

The Macbook Neo is a great product, except the amount of RAM. At 8 GB with MacOS, you are constantly, and I mean, constantly swapping. It' just not enough. It's enough for Linux (although it lately has become bloated too; Fedora/Ubuntu need 4 GB for an equivalent experience), but MacOS needs a lot of tightening to get such a product out of the door and call it a day with so little RAM.

RAM, RAM, RAM. Only thing that matters on a computer.

Die großen Desktop-Systeme entwickeln sich immer stärker weg vom Werkzeug und hin zur überwachten Plattform. Was früher Betriebssystem war, ist heute oft nur noch Überwachungssoftware mit Desktop-Oberfläche. Linux ist nicht perfekt, aber es behandelt Nutzer eher als Menschen und nicht als Datenquelle.

Frisch #ArchLinux installiert. Fürs #WLAN ist ein USB-Stick zuständig, der als #wlan0 eingebunden wird. Hat während der Installation bestens funktioniert. Auch im fertigen System heißt er wlan0, allerdings findet #iwctl jetzt plötzlich keine Netzwerke mehr. Ziehe ich den Stick im laufenden Betrieb heraus und stecke ihn kurz darauf wieder hinein, wird er zu #wlan1 und iwctl findet nun wieder Netzwerke und verbindet sich. Nach einem Neustart ist alles hinfällig.

Stundenlang habe ich jetzt gesucht und herumprobiert. Leider erfolglos.

Hat jemand eine Idee, was hier falsch läuft? Danke im Voraus.

The firmware updates took fine from Linux. Not sure why it was crashing on Windows. After updating from Linux live USB, I rebooted to Windows and checked again with Lenovo System Update. All firmware updates had been applied.

I am getting a few ThinkPad L14 Gen 1 laptops ready with Windows 11.

The first laptop took a while, but updated fine. I did all updates with Snappy Driver Installer, Windows Update and Lenovo System Update. Had to manually remove the touchpad driver and load that again.

On the second laptop, the BIOS update will not apply with Lenovo System Update. It crashes Windows and restarts.

I am going to test the memory. If that checks out fine, I will try to update the BIOS with 'fwupd' in Linux.

I was messing with the #debian installer and its disk partitioning. I don't understand this at all. This is plain stupid.

If the partitioning scheme includes swap, it should be the last partition on the disk. This installer frequently puts it in the absolute worst possible place: the middle.

That's dumb, especially in a virtual world where hard disks trivially change size.

See, what if I decide to make this disk bigger? What if I decide I need more swap? If swap is the last partition, it's trivial.

1. Increase the virtual disk size
2. Boot to single user mode
3. Delete the swap partition
4. Expand the penultimate partition to encompass the new space I created, minus the amount of swap I want.
5. Grow the filesystem in the penultimate partition
6. Create the swap partition in the final position again.
7. Boot.

But when you stick swap in the middle of the fscking disk then it makes changes really non-trivial. You really can't change anything.

The only partitioning scheme that gets it right is the "All files in one partition" scheme. Since there's just the one root filesystem, it puts swap at the end.

Also, it appears that you cannot change the size of partitions in this view. Like, if I wasn't happy with 1.1G of swap, tough noogies. That surprises me. The entire POINT of an interactive installer like this is to allow me to specify high-level things like "Gimme 2G of swap" and have the installer recalculate all the start/stop partition values and such. I've done plenty of debian installs, but this is the first time I stopped to notice how bad this is.

Some of you may argue that the problems I cite aren't important. But I defy you to come up with a good reason why one should put the swap partition in the middle of the partition table. You can argue it doesn't hurt, but you cannot argue that it does something good.

More moaning about #linux. I'm trying to get a discourse server off the ground. Why the fuck do they insist on installing non-OS stuff in the middle of all the OS stuff.

/var/discourse is not a good default. And then fucking docker wants to be /var/lib/docker. Never mind how /var/lib doesn't make any goddamn sense.

Related to my earlier discussion of hard drive partitioning. What I would like to do is have a volume that is not the operating system, but is instead all the application data. The discourse data, database, assets people upload, etc. That way I can have this nice virtual disk that encapsulates it. I could theoretically build a new node, attach this drive to the new node, and migrate the site. I can snapshot that drive more frequently than, say, the OS drive. Lots of benefits to encapsulating it.

After some research today it becomes clear that you can't have a linux system without running LLM generated code, since the linux kernel itself and also systemd has it.

Maybe not running LLM generated code becomes a niche thing like running linux-libre and libreboot. It is not something the average user can achieve.

We need a more specific approach to handle software with LLM contributions.

UPDATE: I haven't seen Recall in action there. I was just asking the doctor how they'll deal with it.

This morning, I went to the doctor for a scheduled appointment. While she was looking at the results of blood tests from two years ago on the screen (and suggested repeating them for a follow-up), I realized she was using Windows 11. A detail came to mind. The doctor is extremely polite and friendly, so I asked her, "How do you handle the feature called Recall?" The doctor was taken aback and had no idea what I was talking about. I was about to drop the conversation, but she, being a serious professional, immediately called the technicians who manage their PCs to ask for clarification. They downplayed it, saying it's not an issue and that it's a feature "on all PCs, so we can't do anything about it." She started to express that she didn’t like it and wanted it deactivated. No luck: they won’t proceed because, according to them, even deactivating it is "a hack that could compromise future updates." She’s furious and will talk to her colleagues and the decision-makers. She wants secure systems because "there’s patient data involved."

In reality, patient data is stored on servers (which I haven't investigated), but everything that appears on the screen is, in my opinion, at risk.

I’ve offered to help them find a solution—because, if I'm right, all they need is LibreOffice and a browser. In that case, I’ll suggest one of the *BSD or Linux systems and do it for free.

I don’t want to make money off my doctor. I just want patient data to be (sufficiently) secure.

Sadly, popular Linux gaming utility Lutris is now AI slop and in response to people expressing their concern, the lead maintainer decided to remove all the attributions for the AI submitted changes so no one can fork it before the changes were made. Oh, also it probably renders the license complete garbage as well too.

At least we now know why it's become notably worse over the last few months and it saves me from writing up some Github issues.

EDIT: After some discussion on their Github, the Lutris maintainer has restored the attributions for the AI submitted changes which he absolutely didn't have to do. Great news for those out there that want to fork it without those changes.

On continue avec les stéréotypes de l’UX autour de logiciel libre : « Linux c’est tout en ligne de commande » et « la ligne de commande c’est pas bien ».

Comment sait-on que c’est un stéréotype ? En 2026, simplement parce que les agents conversationnels sont considérés par *les mêmes personnes* comme une bonne UX.

Or, un chatbot n’est jamais qu’une forme dégradée de ligne de commande : moindre répétabilité, plus de place à l’ambiguïté, etc.

Donc, si une interface fondée sur un langage est une bonne UX, alors la ligne de commande ne peut pas être pire qu’un chatbot. Et si ce n’est pas le cas, alors le chatbot ne peut pas être une bonne UX.

Un raisonnement similaire s’applique pour l’idée que les interfaces graphiques seraient nécessairement plus simples. Car en effet, qui pourrait accepter l’assertion qu’il est plus simple de trouver l’adresse de sa carte réseau dans l’UI graphique de Windows que de taper ̀ipconfig̀ dans un terminal ?

C’est d’ailleurs une des sources du premier stéréotype : il est beaucoup plus facile de dire à un utilisateur qui veut régler son problème sans le comprendre de copier/coller ça dans un terminal, que de lui faire suivre la longue série de clics permettant de trouver le truc au fin-fond des paramètres.

Au final, c’est juste un compromis découvrabilité/puissance différent. Méfiez-vous des stéréotypes.
