I run Asahi Linux on my mac and I'd really like a vinyl sticker to indicate that - less people think I'm ok with (todays) Apple.

There are two variants on Etsy that are _almost_ there, but I think the aestethics are slightly off.

Je pense pouvoir trouver un lieu et des partenaires (Fablab, IUT, Médiathèque, assoc. locale etc.), mais je me demande :
* Quel matériel préparer? Une clef de boot de démo? Un pc de démo? Des disques de sauvegarde? Combien?
* Quelles activités peut-on faire pour faciliter la prise en main?
* Qu’est-ce qu’on présente aux gens? On leur fait un petit topo? Quelles sont les questions récurrentes?
* Combien de personnes par participant environ?

Je vais pas poser la question qui fâche de la distro, ça serait du #Fedora KDE (Xfce ptêtre) ou #Mint, mais c’est pas très grave.

J'aimerais ficeler ça parce que ça me trotte dans la tête depuis un moment.

Le repouet installe automatiquement les pilotes bluetooth.

I haven't played in some 20 years. Some 2 weeks ago I saw #Machinarium for free in #EpicGames's store and went and picked it up, it looks gorgeous. I also bit because it said 'windows #Linux etc'.

Now I'm trying to run it and find out that what I downloaded was a Windows EG launcher. I tried #Wine and some frontends but nothing seemed to work.

Then I tried #Lutris, through which I found there seems to be a Linux version! https://lutris.net/games/machinarium/ But I can't get it from EGS?

#DualBoot-Installationen waren dieses Mal besonders beliebt. Da gibt es dann doch einiges zu beachten:

• ⚠️ Auf jeden Fall ein externes Backup der Daten auf der Windows-Partition anlegen!
• Verkleinerung der Windows-Partition direkt unter Windows (Datenträgerverwaltung) ist empfehlenswert).
• Unter Windows den Schnellstart / Fast startup deaktivieren.
• #SecureBoot kann bei manchen Gerätetreibern unter Linux Probleme machen. In der Regel empfehlen wir inzwischen Secure Boot nach Möglichkeit aktiv zu lassen bzw. wieder zu aktivieren.
• Windows-Systeme, die mit #Bitlocker verschlüsselt sind, müssen vorher entschlüsselt werden. Es kann anschließend wieder aktiviert werden.
• Wenn der Installer Linux nicht auf der Festplatte installieren will, sondern auf dem Ventoy-Stick, hilft es, einen normalen Bootstick mit nur 1 Linux drauf zu verwenden.

Windows used to be the OS that could run a lot of apps, but was a headache to setup and maintain correctly and would sometimes blow up for no reason. That OS is now Linux. Linux used to be the techie and developer oriented command-line OS that was lacking in desktop apps and might not support your hardware, but once you got it going, was rock solid and had no limits. That OS is now FreeBSD.

Je suis à la recherche d'un logiciel #Linux pour faire des backups de fichiers, qui comporterait une feature particulière : pouvoir "archiver" (ou plutôt ghost ?) des fichiers et répertoires. Je m'explique : pouvoir supprimer le fichier/répertoire du disque tout en y gardant une trace du fichier (nom, emplacement), restaurable facilement depuis la #backup quand nécessaire.
Idéalement bien intégré avec Nautilus.

Sur #linuxMint cinnamon j’ai installé gpaste2 avec l’extension GPaste rechargé, j’ai configuré le raccourci super+v pour afficher l’historique des copier/coller.

Y a moyen d’avoir un truc pas buggé ?

Genre j’ai deux instances apparemment au bon d’un moment : si je clique sur l’icône dans la barre des tâches je n’ai pas la même chose qu’avec le raccourci (qui a arrêté de suivre apparemment).

C’est pénible.
Si j’enlève l’applet j’ai juste le truc avec le raccourci qui ne suit plus les changements...

Y a que sur KDE que je n’ai pas de problème avec les clipboard manager.

Linux Mint is often shilled as a lightweight distro that runs great on older hardware. Well, turns out the Cinnamon Desktop actually requires a certain amount of GPU performance to render smoothly.

On my old laptop Intel HD Graphics 4000, the entire Desktop only runs at ~30 FPS. The Xfce/MATE Editions run at 60 with occasional drops.

I didn't expect that from Cinnamon. Even KDE Plasma ran better.

Mitigations for #vmscape have been merged to #Linux mainline and included in new stable and longterm #kernel versions released about an hour ago (like 6.16.7 or 6.12.47).

Vmscape is a vulnerability that essentially takes Spectre-v2 and attacks host userspace from a guest. It particularly affects hypervisors like #QEMU.

J'ai fait ma première installation OEM d'une distribution #Linux.
Pas mal.
Au premier démarrage, tu cliques sur un bouton sur le bureau, il redémarre et te demande uniquement le nom, identifiant, mot de passe et clavier.

J'ai sauvegardé cette image sur mon serveur de clonage #FOGProject.

Je suis paré pour accueillir tous les PC des collègues qui souhaiteront se séparer de Win10. Cela me prendre 5 minutes si tout se passe bien
Je commence mercredi par le PC de ma collègue d'allemand.

Sur mon serveur j’ai un bot discord qui tourne, actuellement je le lance avec docker mais ça me parait être un bazooka.

Je vais donc passer par systemd, mais j’ai un doute sur la meilleure marche à suivre.

- Un service system dans /etc/systemd/system/ ?
- dans ~/.config/systemd/user/ en faisant un loginctl enable-linger pour qu’il démarrre au boot ?
- dans /etc/systemd/user/ ? Il faut faire un loginctl enable-linger aussi ?

Des nouvelles de mon passage à #Linux :
Après pas mal de tâtonnement, je suis satisfait de #Pop_OS.
Il gère mes deux écrans externes, l'éclairage de mon clavier et les jeux Steam. Pour la video je suis passé à Shotcut, qui fait parfaitement l'affaire.

Il y a un côté instable et bancal assez stressant, mais ce n'est rien à côté du soulagement de ne plus être à la merci des updates Microsoft et de leur intégration de l'IA partout.

scanner connecté; ouverture de "numériseur de documents" ; mon scanner est détecté (c'est un clone de mustek) mais j'ai un message d'erreur "communication impossible"

me suis ajouté dans le groupe "scanner" , j'ai téléchargé le pilote sur le site #SANE et copié dans /usr/share/sane/gt68xx/ mais… rien de mieux :/

I don't suppose there's a #terminal escape sequence that causes it to display some text in a new window? Because that would be an interesting alternative to a traditional #pager: instead of paging through the output of a program, it is displayed in its entirety in a separate window.

I think #macOS used to do this with man pages, but the feature seems to have been removed.

Non seulement les raccoucis clavier sont très bien faits, mais il utilise *vraiment* moins de CPU que les autres.
Si vous êtes sur batterie, ça fait une belle différence, vraiment.
mpv utilise à fond le décodage matériel, ce qui le rend énergétiquement plus efficace.

Il y a eu des "install party" partout en France au mois d'août ou quoi ? Non parce que là, passer de 4.56% à 11.64% d'un mois à l'autre, ça fait beaucoup d'un coup quand même...

@AnachronistJohn apt-get returns 100 on error; that's the apt-get in the middle of the "Command:" and the "Exit code: 100" after it. Word on the Fedi has it Ubuntu has been having some issues with their repository servers lately; that *may* have something to do with it.

I want to run lsiutil or storcli64, so I figured I’d install Linux on an external drive.

So I download Ubuntu 24.04.3 Desktop for amd64. It boots, I start an install, and a good 45 minutes later, it says there’s an error. I can’t really see what the error is here, can you?

Je viens de passer une heure et demie à mettre à jour mes drivers de carte graphique sous #Linux

Sincèrement, j'adore ne plus être sous Windows mais faut pas se voiler la face : c'est clairement pas encore user-friendly. Et pourtant j'ai choisi une distribution (ZorinOS) qui limite le bidouillage.

(En plus, ça a pas servi à grand-chose, j'arrive tujours pas à faire tourner le dernier Mafia 😭, qui plante toujours au même moment pendant une cinématique)

C'est le mois #Linux : mise à la retraite de Windows 10 le 14 octobre prochain.
J'ai prolongé la vie de 2 PC la semaine dernière en les faisant passer sur #LinuxMint . Sur l'un d'eux, le PC restait bloqué sur Grub. Je pense à cause du changement d'ordre de priorité dans les boots de disque, que j'avais fait après l'installation initiale sur le second disque. J'ai refait l'installation après le changement de priorité des boots, et c'est passé crème.

It is the basis for the Logical Volume Manager (LVM), #Linux software RAIDs and dm-crypt encryption, and provides additional features such as file system snapshots.

However, the use of Device Mapper targets is not limited to that. Many other targets offer often unknown features. Most of these are intended for production use. However, there are also some targets designed specifically for debugging.

In this talk, Werner gives a full overview of all Device Mapper targets.

@stepan First thing I would check in that situation is the system logs; particularly anything pertaining to DHCP or any network interfaces. Also check timestamps on /etc/resolv.conf; is it being updated? (That would point toward a DHCP client or lease renewal issue.)

Also check `hosts` in /etc/nsswitch.conf.

Are you doing anything special with routing, like a VPN?

A useful combination of options for the #netstat command on #linux is "-n -p -u -t -l -e": show all listening udp and tcp sockets, include program PID and extra information, do not translate numbers.

If you speak german, these options are easy to remember in this order: `netstat -tulpen` -- what means "tulips" 🌷. A single tulip, `netstat -tulpe` turns on number resolution.

#FreeBSD equivalent is `sockstat -l -Ptcp,udp`

@wyatt Personally I'd consider just doing some sort of "#FTP on demand" thing or just have a cheap storage VPS on hand for that (or some #Linux Server on the Network that once-a-day pulls the latest installer file and just redistributes it locally.

A little update for anyone else that is pulling their hair out with this problem... I see threads elsewhere that this is 'a thing' and not just a problem for me.

I've been 'fighting' with the issue on and off while sitting in front of the TV in the evenings for the better part of a week.

I've done everything I can think of... uninstall/reinstall, blow away flatpak entirely, run as root, create a new regular user, purge related files in ~/.local, ~/.config, ~/.var, /var, etc., various combinations of all these things with reboots, etc., etc.

No matter what I try none of the Firefox based browsers will start from flatpak.

Weirdly, with a test VM there is no issue with a flatpak browser. Also, my physical 'big' Intel workstation with the NV 4070S has no problem. Just my laptop has the issue. My laptop is Intel+GTX1650Ti so perhaps there is a 'hunt for the frame buffer' thing happening.

Turns out there is an upstream problem with Firefox and flatpaks that is affecting all the downstream Firefox based browsers.

I reinstalled Firefox-ESR on my broken host (Debian) to ensure I have a working browser going forward. I'll do the same on the other computers as well.

I've also switched my preferred daily driver browser (Floorp) from flatpak to Floorp's PPA and that works perfectly fine.

I know a lot of us have been leery of what happens when Firefox disappears, goes full evil, becomes totally useless due to AI encrusting, whatever... this is a good example that downstream will have issues.

Now to reinstall all the other non-browser flatpaks that were victimized in the troubleshooting. I may have lost my Evolution inbox configurations. Ha!

in willing deleting some nix user (why nix create so many user?) he have delete all user but 5 ....
broke pacman (pacman need alpm user for sandboxing) and so sddm but hypr was still working when launched on tty.

i did do some quick linux magic (involving google, using help and reading configuration file) and now it's seems to be working.

but i think he will find other way to break linux. kudo to the arch team : with almost no user, the laptop still workish !

I had an opportunity to talk with Dirk Schrödter, Minister for Digitalization of Schleswig-Holstein (SH), and currently listening to SH @CIO Sven Thomsen's presentation.

SH is so far ahead!! They're implementing #Linux desktops, they're already using #Nextcloud and #LibreOffice, and end of this month all their gov email will be migrated from Microsoft Exchange to #OpenXChange.

I do this so infrequently that I forget how and have to figure it out from scratch each time. I'm probably not the only one, so perhaps this reminder will stick in your memory and help you the next time you need to.
To change the default kernel that grub boots:
1) Set GRUB_DEFAULT=saved in /etc/default/grub
2) Run update-grub
Now here's the tricky part:
3) Use grub-set-default to set the default, but _you have to respect the menu structure of /boot/grub/grub.cfg when doing it_.

Speaking of Matrix global services occasionally exacerbating one's propensity for migraines, oh look a total outage for the malignant design... oh but they tell everyone a fantastic story:

except that they deployed via an active/passive two node PostgreSQL backend which just crashed both nodes and took 55TB of network data offline. also their TLS termination is fronted by CloudFlare (anything in back of TLS termination is not TLS encrypted).

Q: How do you figure out whether intermittent network issues are being caused by your computer's network connection vs. upstream packet loss?
Symptoms: A few times per hour I get a network connection failure, but when I repeat whatever just failed it works fine the second time. Some of these failures are reporting "Network as unreachable" as the error.
What are your favorite Linux-based tricks for debugging something like this?

Bon les gens, parlons peu, parlons bien : quelle distribution #linux pour une rescapée de Windows, pour un ordinateur récent acheté sans OS ?
Les critères :
- pas de ligne de commande en usage quotidien (mais possible d'avoir besoin pour paramétrer en cours d'installation vu que ça c'est moi qui vais faire)
- une interface graphique claire, et si possible suffisamment similaire à Windows pour faciliter la transition
- pas vraiment d'usage intense ou spécialisé (pas de jeux vidéo par exemple), mais il serait bien d'avoir un système facile pour l'installation de nouveaux logiciels (je doute de penser à tout moi-même)

Habe mich aufgrund Apple's Updatepolitik nach vielen Jahren von MacOS getrennt.

Bei mir läuft #LinuxMint und mein altes MacbookPro wurde heuer dann auch durch ein #LenovoX1 ersetzt.

For Linux (Ubuntu) I find 2 utilities to do battery management on laptops.
laptop-mode-tools and TLP.
Does anyone know if those are 2 means to the same end, or is there a difference?
