Yes, it's still pre-release software. Yes, I'm running it at my own risk. And so far? Absolutely rock solid!

I have system administration experience with #WindowsServer, #Linux, and #OpenBSD professionally. I strongly prefer the #BSD family of OSes and am willing to work with #NetBSD and #FreeBSD professionally and have played with them off the job. I have done this for about three years.

I also know graphic design. My preferred programs are #GIMP and #Inkscape, but I can use #Photoshop or #Illustrator if need be. I have done this for a decade.

I have skills in development, especially web development, and have professionally developed with #Javascript, #Python, and #Go. I also am trying to familiarize myself with #VisualBasic6 for legacy maintenance. I also have experience working with Microsoft #SQLServer databases, as well as played with other major SQL servers. I've also played with many other languages. I'm also willing to familiarize myself with a tech stack on the fly. As implied, I am willing to touch legacy code.

I have also designed websites, and am quite familiar with #HTML and #CSS. I also got #JQuery to play nicely as well.

I am a jack of all trades, with my strongest skills I feel be in system administration and graphic design.

LLMs and generative AI are something I prefer to avoid where possible. I have experience with working under tight deadlines with a micromanaging boss before recent hype around LLMs, though I'd rather avoid such things if possible.

Drucken lief, Scannen fehlte noch. Also Terminal auf, Pakete installieren, Scanner suchen lassen und testen. erst wollte der Epson XP-7100 unter CachyOS nicht so recht, dann klappte es mit sane-airscan und Simple Scan doch.
Ein bisschen Linux-Gefrickel gehört manchmal dazu. Jetzt scannt er, wieder ein Baustein im Alltagstest erledigt.

The collapse of the #Debian project is going faster than I thought it would.

I was disappointed and horrified by the earlier vote to allow LLM use, but even then, I had no idea it was going to get this bad this quickly.

Forcing all package maintainers to jump through an LLM hoop to upload their packages is scary reminiscent of companies forcing job applicants to jump through LLM hoops to keep their job applications from being ignored.

At this rate Debian will soon be gone.

@loptimist Je m'apprêtait à louer les qualités de #DevEnv mais en clonant un projet développé sur #Linux sur un #MacOS, je me retrouve avec un #DevEnv qui refuse tout simplement de fonctionner.

Je n'ai jamais eu ce problème avec les #Flake du coup je ne suis plus tant certain du mon avis sur le sujet.

So setting up #Waydroid has gotten much easier than the first time I tinkered with it a couple of years ago. It's now included in #Debian backports so no third party installation scripts or repos or anything. You can just "apt install waydroid/trixie-backports", add a couple of firewall rules and then launch the graphical setup tool to get going. Aside from manually adding the firewall rules, it really was just as simple as installing the package and hitting the go button.

Hey #Linux folks using laptops. I have installed #debian on an Apple MacBook circa 2015. When this thing ran MacOS, I could close the lid with a full battery and it would stay suspended for days at a time. Now that I'm running Linux on it, it runs the battery down in hours (less than 24) when I suspend.

What's the trick? I'm using KDE Plasma, if that matters.

Please don't give any suggestions that:

• Suggest a different Linux distro. I'm not interested.
• Suggest not using KDE. That's not the question.
• Recommend something you've never tried on Debian/Ubuntu or one of those variants.

I used to be a FreeBSD enthusiast, but then I set up Alpine Linux and now I’m really enjoying it. ❤️

This setup only uses around 760 MB of RAM, with elinks, cmus, newsboat, top, and fastfetch all running on the screen. It’s so lightweight, and I’m noticing really good battery life too. I feel right at home with this setup.

One of my favourite things is browsing old blogs with elinks. There’s just something nice about opening a terminal and reading the web without all the extra stuff getting in the way. Simple, fast, and does what I need.

I love it. I think I’ve found my new home with #AlpineLinux. 🐧💻

It is written in the Odin programming language (compiled). The install script pulls down the source and Odin compiler and compiles and installs after after you questions about how you’d like it set up.

I had trouble getting audio and brightness working. I was on Devuan, but decided to install a Void derivative distro. Had the same problems on that. It ended up being that I needed to create an .xinitrc file and put a line in it to start dbus and pulseaudio (I removed pipewire from Neko-Void).

Now that I have audio working, I am very pleased with the ‘milk’ window manager. The default configuration is great and easy to edit by pointing and clicking in a the settings panel (can edit a milk.json config file, too).

Wenn unter Ubuntu etwas nicht funktioniert, steht der Grund oft im Systemprotokoll:

journalctl -b -p err

zeigt alle Fehler seit dem letzten Start. Unter Windows wäre das die Ereignisanzeige.

Will I talk about Linux? Of course. But I'll also talk about BSD, illumos, monocultures, and why we should never forget that there are always other paths worth exploring.

Linux proved that an alternative was possible. It would be a shame if that alternative became, in turn, a new imposition.

Because monocultures are a problem, even in the Open Source world. And because freedom isn't about everyone doing things the same way, but about being able to choose a different way.

Parlerò di Linux? Certamente. Ma parlerò anche di BSD, illumos, di monoculture e di quanto sia importante non dimenticare che esistono sempre altre strade.

Linux ha dimostrato che un'alternativa era possibile. Sarebbe un peccato se quell'alternativa diventasse, a sua volta, una nuova imposizione.

Perché le monoculture sono un problema, anche nel mondo Open Source. E perché la libertà non è fare tutti le cose allo stesso modo, ma poter scegliere di farle diversamente.

• Seems #Huawei uncompetitive ATM with HP for their requirements.
• One recent IT sovereignty action: replaced US HR #SaaS supplier with CN one. Felt employee data too sensitive to be in hands of foreign company.
• LLMs: various self-hosted CN models. EDIT: self-hosted for data security reasons foremost, also cost.
• Communications: Feishu (Lark, CN), Weixin (WeChat, CN)
• As far as they know, no company plans or discussion ATM to migrate away from HP, Windows, Mac, MS Office etc.
• Re the future, they feel it depends on:
• - US-CN relationship: better? worse?
• - Speed of CN's own tech development.
• - Price. It's business, so price will always be a key factor.

• Huawei w/ Harmony OS.
• Personal choice, not company issue.

• #iPhone failed on biz trips to very cold places (N. China in winter, -20°C): would turn on for only 1-2 seconds before turning itself off, or wouldn't turn on at all.
• iPhone's poor/zero signal strength below ground, e.g. shopping centres, parking. Friends/colleagues w/Huawei right next to them with more bars & no connection problems.
• Celebrity iCloud leaks made them consider personal cloud security & #DataSovereignty ('are US companies making money off me & my data, & not even protecting it to boot?')
• Used to be a regular iPhone buyer, then a few years ago won company prize of a mobile phone with choice of iPhone or Huawei. For above reasons, chose Huawei & has stayed with Huawei for subsequent purchases. Still thinks iPhone more beautiful UI & better photos, but happier with Huawei's greater reliability & IT sovereignty.

Hmmm. Looks like cdn.fwupd.org is having issues, since that's where fwupdmgr gets updates from. I'm able to load their site in a browser, but it's extremely slow and has missing elements. Tried loading it in the Tor browser just to see if it's an issue with a local CDN and got the same result.

Wollte mir unter CachyOS ein Alias im gewohnten Linux-Mint-Stil anlegen. Hat nicht auf Anhieb funktioniert.

Der Grund: CachyOS nutzt standardmäßig Fish statt Bash. Andere Shell, andere Syntax.

Kleine Ursache, neue Erkenntnis. Genau deshalb macht Linux Spaß: Man lernt nie aus.

Nouvelle appli en test sur mon système #Linux #Ubuntu depuis le bureau #Gnome, Feishin est un lecteur de musique très complet (voire un peu trop !), avec plein de réglages possibles. Très soigné et propre ! Parfait avec un serveur Navidrome. Mise en page dynamique en fonction de la taille de la fenêtre, affichage quasi automatisé des paroles (ça marche pas toujours), édition des tags en direct, etc.

Trouvé sur le magasin d'applis FlatHub pour Gnome ("Logiciels" dans les applications).
