I run Asahi Linux on my mac and I'd really like a vinyl sticker to indicate that - less people think I'm ok with (todays) Apple.

There are two variants on Etsy that are _almost_ there, but I think the aestethics are slightly off.

Does anyone know of something better?

                                                    Hello tootiverse !

I'm looking for a files software with a special feature: "archive" (or maybe "ghost" ?) some files and directories.
In a nutshell: being able to delete a file/directory from the disk while keeping track of it (path, name, size...), so that you can restore it easily from the backup whenever you need it.
                                                    Ideally well integrated into Nautilus.

Does anybody know if this is a thing ?

From the abstract: "The device mapper has been part of the since version 2.6. It allows the creation of virtual block devices by mapping their address space to other block devices or special functions. In this way, it can map physical block devices such as hard disks or SSDs to higher-level virtual block devices. It is the basis for the Logical Volume Manager (LVM), software RAIDs and dm-crypt encryption, and provides additional features such as file system snapshots.

However, the use of Device Mapper targets is not limited to that. Many other targets offer often unknown features. Most of these are intended for production use. However, there are also some targets designed specifically for debugging.

From the abstract: "Linux’s current writeback infrastructure, while robust, was designed before large folios, CXL-tiered memory, and AI workloads demanding low-latency, high-throughput I/O. Today, workloads like RAG pipelines using vector databases with buffered I/O, and memory tiering on CXL, are exposing scalability limits in how the handles writeback.

This talk presents a forward-looking view on evolving Linux’s writeback model. We’ll explore how the single-threaded design stalls page migration and reduces memory compaction effectiveness—affecting hugepage allocations and folio movement across memory tiers, contributing to fragmentation. On the storage side, parallelizing writeback improves throughput and responsiveness under dirty-page pressure, especially for sustained-write workloads with large memory footprints on High capacity SSDs.

We’ll also touch on early experiments within the kernel community, including efforts to make writeback more filesystem-geometry aware and parallelize it based on overwrites/new allocations.

This session invites open source community to reimagine writeback as a scalable, performance-critical component in Linux. A single tulip, `netstat -tulpe` turns on number resolution.

I see threads elsewhere that this is 'a thing' and not just a problem for me.

I've done everything I can think of... uninstall/reinstall, blow away flatpak entirely, run as root, create a new regular user, purge related files in ~/.local, ~/.config, ~/.var, /var, etc., various combinations of all these things with reboots, etc., etc.

No matter what I try none of the Firefox based browsers will start from flatpak.

Weirdly, with a test VM there is no issue with a flatpak browser. Also, my physical 'big' Intel workstation with the NV 4070S has no problem. Just my laptop has the issue. My laptop is Intel+GTX1650Ti so perhaps there is a 'hunt for the frame buffer' thing happening.

I reinstalled Firefox-ESR on my broken host (Debian) to ensure I have a working browser going forward. I'll do the same on the other computers as well.

I've also switched my preferred daily driver browser (Floorp) from flatpak to Floorp's PPA and that works perfectly fine.

I know a lot of us have been leery of what happens when Firefox disappears, goes full evil, becomes totally useless due to AI encrusting, whatever... this is a good example that downstream will have issues.

Now to reinstall all the other non-browser flatpaks that were victimized in the troubleshooting. 3) Use grub-set-default to set the default, but _you have to respect the menu structure of /boot/grub/grub.cfg when doing it_.

Some of these failures are reporting "Network as unreachable" as the error.

I've chased going to previous working versions, back dating stuff like org.freedesktop.Platform.GL.default and org.freedesktop.Platform.VAAPI.Intel within flatpak. I've removed all flatpaks and tried reinstalling just a single browser.

Always did this I think but don't know if there is something new to troubleshoot there. I've verified access for the browsers using Flatseal and the home dirs have not changed permissions.

Yes, it’s concerning. I use and rely on F-Droid, so I too care about this. But I’m seeing wild takes that PCs will soon have locked bootloaders and will be outlawed. That’s… a stretch.

I expect people to push back, I certainly will. But right now it feels like we’re manifesting a self-fulfilling prophecy.

When I plug the USB cable into I get "Is your USB cable bad?" unless I disconnect all the devices from the hub, plug the hub's USB cable into my laptop and THEN plug the peripherals into the monitor stand's hub.

I get the same thing with Mac OS X except Mac OS X complains "USB devices using too much power and have been disabled" unless I toggle the power on the i-tec docking station that the monitor stand's USB plug is plugged into.

There's so many fun little stories in here, like how the Linux kernel started out as a multitasking demo written in x86 assembly, which

I was just asking the doctor how they'll deal with it.

While she was looking at the results of blood tests from two years ago on the screen (and suggested repeating them for a follow-up), I realized she was using Windows 11. A detail came to mind. The doctor is extremely polite and friendly, so I asked her, "How do you handle the feature called Recall?" The doctor was taken aback and had no idea what I was talking about. I was about to drop the conversation, but she, being a serious professional, immediately called the technicians who manage their PCs to ask for clarification. They downplayed it, saying it's not an issue and that it's a feature "on all PCs, so we can't do anything about it." She started to express that she didn’t like it and wanted it deactivated. No luck: they won’t proceed because, according to them, even deactivating it is "a hack that could compromise future updates." She’s furious and will talk to her colleagues and the decision-makers. She wants secure systems because "there’s patient data involved."

In reality, patient data is stored on servers (which I haven't investigated), but everything that appears on the screen is, in my opinion, at risk.

I’ve offered to help them find a solution—because, if I'm right, all they need is LibreOffice and a browser. In that case, I’ll suggest one of the *BSD or Linux systems and do it for free.

I just want patient data to be (sufficiently) secure.

I'm happy to help deal with regressions, but I'm spending so much of my time lately working on tooling and U-Boot, something has to give and that has been the kernel maintenance.

A drowning hand labeled "Linux users asking for antivirus" reaches up.

A hand labeled "Redditors" reaches out to help.

What's stable, secure, and fast (in that order)?

It should be able to gracefully deal with disconnects and reconnects.

I'm hoping someone can share some of their wisdom with me.

At some point, the meaning of SUID (at least for Linux, or some distributions of it) changed subtly. In, for example, RHEL 7 and earlier, a SUID process could access things belonging to its original owner - it gained the privs of the new user, but that wasn't exclusive. RHEL 8 and later, a SUID process no longer has access to the privs of the user that launched the SUID binary. In recent Debian and FreeBSD the SUID process doesn't have access to its old user, but I haven't got older versions around to compare.

So you're looking most likely not for a distribution change but for a kernel setuid semantics change then.

Apparently something very like it was in 5.1 kernel.org/doc/html/v5.1/admin but that's still too recent.

Now that Clear.Dental is the only Open Source EHR/PMS, getting people to switch has never been more important.

    • Relies on X11 hacks to get touchscreen working
    • Data is stored in /home/$USER/clearDentalData (each user needs a clone of the data)
    • Supports resistive touch screens (which self identify as a mouse) for things like scrolling
    • Requires a 1920x1080 (or higher) resolution screen
    • Main target is Linux Desktops
