😮 I don’t use the software suite formerly known as Office, but this “scheduled remote degradation” is very concerning.

In a parallel move, the software suite formerly known as as iWork was updated to include all manner of AI and subscription-based features that you can’t turn off. I thought this wouldn’t affect me (I refuse to upgrade), except that my current apps hound me every day: “hey there’s a new version! Time to upgrade bro! Click the big blue button!” Every day! But what if at some point they decide the nags aren’t enough, and they just kill my current tools without my consent?

I seriously am out of patience for this #enshittification trend. Whenever my current Mac dies, I’m switching over to #Linux #Mint.

Mal wieder am Backup rumgeschraubt.

Eine übrige SATA-SSD in ein "vernünftiges" USB-Gehäuse gebaut was nicht in die Ecke kotzt sobald man heavy i/o macht. Jetzt performantes Backup/Restore direkt auf die externe SSD und täglicher rsync von da auf das externe HDD-Array. Somit sauber getrennt vom internen Storage im Server.
So gefällt mir das.

Whenever I'm exploring a new graphical environment on #Linux and #BSD, early on I like to run a "timedate test", i.e how easy is it to change the desktop clock to a non-standard format?

I like the format `%j-%d-%H%M`:

Results so far:

* WMs and their taskbars: easy
* #Cinnamon : easy
* #GNOME : requires extension
* #KDE : no easy way to add the `%j` that I discovered
* #Xfce : easy

My working hypothesis is that if custom timedate is easy... harder things will be easier. And vice-versa. 🙂

Ich finde #WireGuard super. Tochter hat ihr Laptop mit zu den Grosseltern genommen. Ohne Probleme haben sie eine WLAN Verbindung aufgebaut. Geraet war direkt via WireGuard im VPN.

Passwort fuer die Lernsoftware aus dem Passwort-Manager kopiert und schon kann sie ihre Hausaufgaben machen.

Die Festplatte ist via luks verschluesselt.

Chatten koennen wir ueber einen #XMPP im LAN. Zugriff auf den #Luanti ueber NAT via nft.

On my ThinkPad laptop, I removed KDE Plasma and replaced it with XFCE. I had been trying out Plasma for about a month. I can see why people like it, but I don't think it matches my priorities.

Despite knowing about XFCE, I just hadn't used it much up until this month. Right now, I am quite enthused about it. I think XFCE is a great mix between minimal, modular and the helpfulness that can come with a desktop environment.

Microsoft hat mit Azure Linux 4.0 seine eigene Linux-Distribution veröffentlicht. „Microsoft loves Linux", schon klar.

Ich habe genauer hingeschaut und einen längeren Text dazu geschrieben — über Steve Ballmers „Krebsgeschwür"-Rhetorik, über die Jahre, in denen Microsoft an praktisch jedem Android-Telefon mitverdiente, über Embrace, Extend, Extinguish, und über die Frage, was „Souveränität" eigentlich noch bedeutet, wenn das eigene Linux in einer fremden Cloud kuratiert wird.

Kleine Offenlegung vorweg: Ich habe von 2005 bis 2011 selbst für Microsoft gearbeitet. Das hier ist also keine Abrechnung von außen, eher ein Learning von jemandem, der die Maschine von innen kannte.

Der Text nimmt die wohlwollende Lesart durchaus ernst, seht selbst, er endet trotzdem unbequem:
„Linux in der fremden Cloud, kuratiert von fremder Hand, aktualisiert aus fremder Registry … das ist keine Souveränität. Das ist ein Mietverhältnis."

- Der Patch entfernt veraltete Unterstützung, weil die Architektur nicht mehr den modernen Anforderungen genügt.
- Ohne diesen Sonderfall wird die Weiterentwicklung des Kernels einfacher und sicherer.

"I don't understand why users now are so willing to defend things like systemd in the Linux space. They pretend like no one could use the ecosystem before it came around and that Linux was living in the stone age. The reality was plenty of us were using it since the mid-90s just fine. Things were certainly much better back then provided you had supported hardware and it was easier to participate in the development. Users got to drive the development as well because the users were the developers instead of faceless corporations. Sure you could ruin your CRT monitor with a misconfigured X server but other than that there wasn't much issue and it was easy enough to configure those things if you paid attention. It was certainly much easier to find answers and get support back then. People now pretend like web searches and discussion platforms didn't exist in those days. Lots of revisionist history being peddled by people that weren't alive back then and people who were alive back then that would prefer you didn't look to hard into the past.

Even systemd isn't unique. Linux has had a long history of people attempting to make "do everything" daemons which were horrible to work with and were eventually replaced by something else (usually, another "do everything" daemon). Everyone loves to hate on pulseaudio now for good reason. But most of them probably never dealt with it back in the day when it would randomly want to consume 100% of your CPU. There was another large daemon I've forgotten the name of now that would gobble up all your resources and was a pain in the ass to deal with and was eventually tossed out of userspace for good reason. People now pretend like they can't get along without udev even though setting up /dev and running static /dev is much more secure. They say the average user can't get along without auto mounted thumb drives when it's easy enough to run the mount command. Sadly, these people are some of the most vocal."

I self-host the DNS for my domains for more than 20 years now.

2026 now finally was the year, where I decomissioned the last BIND server and replaced it with a PowerDNS, containerized in Podman and a SQLite backend.

I already migrated the hidden-primariy to PowerDNS in 2022 (because of the REST API, compatibility with Traefik, easier DNSSEC handling and the higher flexibility) and now my secondaries are also migrated.

Nontheless, BIND was one of the most stable pieces of technology that I've ever used. But it also felt a bit unwieldy and old-fashined ins some ways.

Bonus: `journalctl --disk-usage` verrät, wie viel Platz eure Logs wegfressen. Bei mir grad 1,2 GB. Ups. 😅

Kleiner Tipp für alle, die wie ich gerne 47 Terminals offen haben und dann den Überblick verlieren: `tmux` ist euer Freund. Sessions überleben sogar SSH-Disconnects – ihr könnt euch also wieder einklinken, als wäre nichts gewesen.

Bonus: `Ctrl+b d` zum Detachen, `tmux a` zum Wiederkommen. Das war's eigentlich schon. Der Rest ist Kür.
