#password and #passphrase generators are a staple in our modern world. there's many implementations in different #frameworks that will generate complex output with #entropy calculation.

i decided to build my own. i call it #gopass it's built on #golang and will have build targets for #freebsd #openbsd #linux and maybe #macos (not sure i care enough yet).

this took about 20 minutes to wire up initially with a base implementation. what's taken a couple of weeks to nail down is the ui and more so the entropy calculation which has too many deltas to be super-realistic.

anyways, like the #unix #philosophy of doing one thing very well, this tool follows that tried and true pattern.

Gnome (and/or xrandr) can't find my second screen. gmd and the splash screen see it fine thoughj.

I'm using Wayland so maybe that's part of it ? Although if I try to use X login doesn't work.

(yeah I messed my system bad, I know... It seems fine after login, still... )

Firefox hat ein Feature namens Adaptive History. Damit wird die URL automatisch vorausgewählt, wenn sie eindeutig ist. Das heisst, wenn man zum Beispiel früher schonmal https://gnulinux.ch aufgerufen hat, reicht dann einfach gnu zu tippen und Enter zu drücken. Aktivieren kann man das in about:config indem man browser.urlbar.autoFill.adaptiveHistory.enabled auf true setzt.

DESCRIPTION

badblocks is used to search for bad blocks on a device (usually a disk partition). device is the special file corresponding to the device (e.g /dev/hdc1). last_block is the last block to be checked; if it is not specified, the last block on the device is used as a default. first_block is an optional parameter specifying the starting block number for the test, which allows the testing to start in the middle of the disk. If it is not specified the first block on the disk is used as a default.

Today I learned that there are some proprietary components in #Linux #distros. I learned the deep stuff like firmware is no escape. But there are some distros who will include #proprietary stuff for workflow.

I checked my #Mint and there was nothing, or at least the check told me, I'm as #FOSS as if I'd be on #Debian. This made me relax a bit.

But also learned that Debian gives a priority to Foss stuff more than any distro out there. That's a nice thing to know.

Vorgestern war es dann so weit …. (kleiner Erfahrungsbericht)

ein Update bei GLFOS (Nixos) lief nicht durch und brach mit Fehlern ab.

Ich musste erst mal eruieren, woran es lag, weil die Updates in GlfOS im Hintergrund ausgeführt werden. Irgendwas mit Vulkantreiber und eine Datei konnte wohl nicht heruntergeladen werden und das ganze führte zu einer ganzen Kaskade von Fehlern im Update.

Ich natürlich direkt Panik …. bloß nicht rebooten, sonst startet das System ja vielleicht nicht mehr. Mit Arch bzw. dessen Abkömmlingen ist es mir schon oft genug passiert.

Erst mal den Matrixchannel von GLFOS besucht und in bestem französisch (was Deepl.com so hergibt) mein Problem geschildert samt Logs und Bilder.

Erst mal ist dort direkt jemand mit dem gleichen Problem …. gut ich bin nicht allein.

Ein anderer USER schickt 'nen Link zu 'nem Bugreport den ich nicht so ganz verstehe.

Nach etwas Zeit nimmt sich dann einer ein Herz und klärt mich auf, besagtem User bin ich schon vor ein paar Tagen als Umsteiger aufgefallen.

Erstens ist das ein Bug der von NixOS kam also muss man erst mal warten, was Nixos macht. Zweitens, wenn interessiert es …. das System übernimmt nur Änderungen, wenn das Update fehlerfrei durchlief und selbst wenn nicht kann man ja auf einen vorherigen stand switchen beim Systemstart … einfach so.

Hab ich einfach nicht bedacht … aus reiner Gewohnheit voll in den Panikmodus gewechselt.

Ich fühle mich so wohl mit GLFOS, die Leute im MAtrixchannel sind sehr hilfsbereit und scheinbar kann nicht mal ich was bei GLFOS/NixOS kaputt machen.

Ja es ist etwas umgewöhnen am Anfang aber GLFOS macht es einem Leichter als NIXOS.

Is there a simple way (i.e. not patching the kernel or similar funny business) to make the Linux Suspend-to-Disk hibernation turn off the computer as with a system shutdown poweroff. I.e. I don't want it to wake up from hitting a key on an input device; only actuating the power button should start it up again.

Since I also want to use Suspend-to-RAM (standby), waking up using input device key-press disabling the Wake-on-X in UEFI config isn't the option here.

Put the menu bar at the top of the screen. Removed the start menu (mainmenu) and Quick Launch. Put the Desktop Switcher on the right side of the bar.

I am launching applications with lxqt-runner bound to a shortcut key, 'Super + Space' (so similar to default rofi or drun functionality, but the default built in tool for LXQt).

The default keyboard shortcuts for positioning windows are pretty good but assume having the numpad, which I do since I am using this on a desktop with full size keyboard.

I modified the keyboard shortcut for 'maximize window' to be 'Super + Begin(keypad)' s that the center of keypad does what I intuitively expect it to for window positioning.

Right now I feel very comfy in LXQt. There's just enough for widgets and customization to feel that it is easy to use. Just enough ability to customize, without being overwhelmed with options. It is light and quick.

Seems like it's been a busy week for the Alpine devs.

This weekend repo upgrade linux-stable from 7.0.10 > 7.1.3; Plasma from 6.6.5 > 6.6.6. I'll be keeping an eye on the later. Ha.

Maybe I'll take a swipe at trying the 7800 XT (RDNA3) card in my main machine again to see if things have improved. It's too nice out to be screwing around in the lab today.

I've been running Linux since 1993 and to this day, I'm still learning. It's what I love so much about running Linux and FOSS. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be stuck running only a proprietary OS or apps.

I've also been running FreeBSD on and off for years, but that's about to change to running FreeBSD daily. Not replacing Linux, but running it along with Linux.

Sorry, just a simple appreciation post for FOSS, all the projects, and most importantly, all of the folks who devote their time to developing this wonderful software.

My first couple attempts to install were unsuccessful... but I now think that is due to me trying to use the "disk encryption" checkbox in the installer.

After just about a half hour of getting used to it and making a few adjustments to the keyboard shortcuts and settings, I am quite happy with LXQT.

It is quick and light and has most of core features that Cinnamon desktop has.

I don't know what will be my journey with #Linux #distros in the future. As a new comer, I'm using #Linuxmint. I'm obsessed with #FOSS and Linux now. I feel I'll be exploring new distros for the sake of learning, learning about computers, and how things work, it is rich.

But eventually, I feel I'd settle on something that works, as I need to be productive and take care of my work/job. So eventually, I see myself going back to Mint or even something similar. Going back to a distro that'll stay out of my way, let me focus on my work, something reliable and stable.

I'm looking for a #Linux replacement for #Clipy on #MacOS. It's a clipboard extension and the particular feature I'm after is the ability to save snippets of text that you can recall via keyboard shortcut and navigating your categories to find the snippet you want. Selecting the snippet inserts it where the cursor has focus.

I may be using the wrong search terms, but everything I find is just a clipboard history manager, or just does text expansion - and I can't remember a bunch of text strings to trigger my snippets.

Update: I've had better luck searching and have found three that might work:

• CopyQ
• Snyp
• Clipboard Indicator (Gnome-extension)

And then it hangs and doesn't go any further. From the research I have done, the SGX is a warning and not the cause of the freeze. Something else is, but that doesn't get a message on the screen.

LOL, my server that I finally moved under my desk and started to hook up has no video output. It's supposed to operate as a headless device, so I never really thought about it, since I didn't want to buy a fancy graphics card and waste a lot of power and money, but I didn't actually notice it doesn't have any built-in video either.

It has some USB ports, audio in and out, PS2 keyboard and mouse, and ethernet. I need enough display for UEFI settings and console. Any suggestions?

I'm learning about #Wayland watching videos and reading articles. I had no idea about the current discussions in the #Linux community.
What prompted this is news today about #Linux #mint tailoring Wayland. After all, I'm excited, because eventually all of this means more flexibility and security for Linux #distros.

I was thinking of having #i3 on my #Linux_Mint but I'm not sure if I'll actually need it or if it will be worthy for me. I open multiple apps and browser tabs while working on my machine.

Looking back, it feels like a different world.

Linux wasn't mainstream. Many people saw it as something only enthusiasts or "crazy Unix people" used. Windows dominated almost everywhere.

The RHCE exam was entirely hands-on. No multiple choice. You had to configure and fix real systems under time pressure.

I was fortunate that the company I worked for believed in me and paid for the exam. I only had to do one thing: pass.

More than 20 years later, I'm still working with Linux every day. The technologies have changed from physical servers to Kubernetes and cloud, but the foundation remains the same.

Looking at this certificate reminds me how far the Linux ecosystem has come.

Linux - wieder fällt auf, wie ressourcenschonend ein OS sein kann. Auf dem Notebook läuft der Debian Host + 2 virtuelle Debian Maschinen, eine mit 16 GByte eine mit 8. Auf den Guests nutze ich Office, Browser, Mailclient, Remote Desktop, es sind mehrere Programme geöffnet - Lüfter ist aus, Speicherbelegung lächerlich gering.

Unter #Windows 10/11 war das eine CPU & RAM zerreissende Ressourcenschlacht, Notebook immer am Limit, Lüfter auf 100%.
