Question – what OS should I install?

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e with only 2 cores, 4 threads, and 4 GB of RAM. I'm looking for OS recommendations that would be suitable for this machine.

I'm considering Debian, possibly as a command-line installation, to see if I could manage without a GUI. I've also thought about something more exotic like OpenBSD. Regardless, I'd mainly like to use this machine as a portable typewriter. Importantly, I need TTS (text-to-speech) because of my personal accessibility needs—a screen reader is essential.

I enjoy experimenting with distros and learning through hands-on experience.

Any advise and tips are welcome!

Latest thoughts on mobile devices...

* Done with Android. Google has killed any cachet it had with their recent developer registration and side loading BS. I won't waste any more time on Android messing around with embedded stuff for my projects.

* iOS phone that I currently own (13) will be my last. Apple is just as bad as Google, will leave this platform also, even if for the last 4-5 years it was a sort of pseudo-privacy respecting mobile safe space. It was all BS and is about to get worse.

* I really haven't used phone apps beyond Firefox (and now Waterfox and Librewolf since Firefox turned) in the set 10 years or so. Won't miss anything from this perspective. I've never trusted the platforms with my payment systems so I won't miss "tap phone to pay" either. CarPlay/AAuto is convenient but a huge privacy leak.

* My next phone will be something that takes calls/sms and can create a hotspot and does effectively nothing else; a decent camera that doesn't have AI BS ruining the images would be nice. Device suggestions appreciated.

* I'll probably start researching small, flip convertible, touchscreen laptops that can act as a tablet and pair it with the phone. The device needs to be able to run Linux and/or BSD (of course). The older Lenovo Tab 11 I have now is serviceable in the meantime until I find a decent lightweight convertible.

* Would consider a Linux phone but I don't care enough about this segment to put up with being a beta/gamma tester. Also, lot of money for an uneven and potentially bad experience.

* If we consider new cars a mobile device <wat!?> then I'm done with them as well. So much so that I recently bought a 2000 Volvo S70 5spd for my wife as a winter beater. No mobile telemetry there - unlike my son's new Toyota GR86.

* While navigating all this, boycotting U.S. tech/manufacturers.

* There's no fun/joy in any of this stuff any more. #RantyMcRantFace

Pretty tall order. Makes the further case for throwing the phone into the crusher and migrating from "digital man" to "analog man" and fleeing into the woods/workshop. Ha.

I'm thinking of switching from Debian to BSD, but am unsure which one to start doing serious homework on first.

It will need a modern browser like Firefox (or a fork), office suite, GIMP, and VLC. Also need good printer support.

Citrix Workspace is one of those applications I need, but do not want to adopt.

So I put its official Debian package in a disposable rootless Podman container on Fedora. X11, PipeWire, GPU and webcam support go in. Citrix-shaped filesystem clutter stays out.

It is a packaging boundary, not a security sandbox, and that distinction matters.

I've been using Chimera Linux for some time now, and it's great. (The maintainer of it is a bit of a strange one, but hey-ho).

Chimera Linux is the Linux based on musl using the freebsd userspace. (This isn't anything new, Debian had an attempt at this with Debian-freebsd).

@wezm has created Casuarina which is essentially Chimera Linux with glibc rather than musl.

The Debian vote on LLM slop AI Code in the project is interesting

The Debian developers have voted on the project's stance regarding content generated by large language models (LLMs). There were eight proposals put forward on the topic of whether to allow LLM-generated content to be included in Debian, ranging from banning all LLM contributions to accepting all AI/LLM contributions. The result of the vote was that option 5 (also called option E) was selected: "Responsible Use of Generative AI", which is summarized as: "Debian neither endorses nor prohibits the use of generative AI tools in the development, maintenance, or documentation of software, packaging, documentation, and other media published within the Debian Project."

Debian Project Leader Lucas Nussbaum expressed regret on the results of the vote, writing: "On a very personal note, I regret that the winning option does not acknowledge all the legitimate concerns around AI: environmental impact, copyright and licensing uncertainty, the health of Free Software communities, and the strain of aggressive scraping on the open web."

At least one developer has left the project in protest following the vote. Antoine Le Gonidec wrote, in part: "I can not support the current decision of Debian about LLM use, and am no longer willing to be seen as a part of Debian under these new rules. Pretending to have a 'neutral stance' when faced with fascism is not neutrality, it's active collaboration.... You can replace me with some agentic AI anyway, so do not even try to pretend you're going to miss me."

So iPadOS is the "stinker": it can initiate video calls, but not receive them. It's right up to date: v2.59.1

No stun/turn problems on my Deltachat server!

A while ago I had my old laptop upgraded with a big SSD and Linux, as a spare (by someone else).

Since then, I have forgotten what the password was when it was set up.

Is there an easy way to get around that, or can Linux just be reinstalled without the current password?

There is nothing on it that needs to be saved.

✅️ I am currently in my 20th year in education and over the years I've worked in both secondary and college. I've been a sysadmin longer, having started at the NM Coalition for Literacy in 2000 while finishing college on the "long plan." I pivoted in 2018 back to the private sector and then back again to education in 2022. I've maintained this side company/DBA, Haack's Networking, throughout the entirety and I still have clients to this day that I began with in the early 2000s.

✍️ I've always been struck by the prohibitive cost of software. As a young kid, I remember my father purchased me MetroWorks CodeWarrior for learning C for my LC475 68K mac. I read somewhere in 1992 that I should learn C so that's why I asked for it. Over those next few months, it's hard to explain the frustration I felt at trying to keep the abstractions separated. Open firmware, vs. mac's OS at that time, vs., the IDE and C I was supposed to be learning. It helped at disambiguating abstractions, but was useless at teaching me C. I still suck at C. The package was pretty costly nevertheless.

📻️ While in my early days as a sysadmin, I remember the Adobe suites, Microsoft suites, etc., that we were obligated to keep up to date and purchase for our non-profit. We also had tons of macs, 5 laser printers, early flat panel displays, an early NAS, and a hard firewall (Sonic something). It was not sustainable for this non-profit whatsoever. After the prior Director left - who I still consider a mentor and friend to this day - others took over who made an effort to reduce spending and keep the tech lifts in line with reality. It was slow and painful, but/and I learned that costly is not better.

There was a time when the free & open source software movement stood in opposition to big tech.

It's become a cliché now, but when Microsoft found a new way to enshittify Windows, the natural response was "install Linux", because open source stood in opposition to bug tech.

Yet with the emergence of LLMs, there's a significant number of open source projects that gladly accept Claude-generated code. Some maintainers are open advocates.

So is it time for a fork, when an explicitly open and AI-free software movement separates from FOSS projects that openly embrace AI?

Update your software on all your platforms regularly

This is the golden rule.

• We often do it in a work environment and get paid for that
• We do it for ourselves because it is good for our devices.
• We are careful doing it on our devices which can be bricked remotely by the factory (TV's treadmills trainers)
• We install piehole and other ad blackholes to protect our devices from pesky ads
• There are so many repositories to follow
• Auto updates are stupid, IMHO, even for workstations
• On servers with PHP, we need manual granular tested updates, if we used PHP (old version) because we are slow to implement PHP (new major version)

Big corporations always ruin things, because they prioritise making fast money over anything, even if stomping on others, whether people or the environment or you name it.

AI companies shouldn't have scrapped the internet from the beginning. If AI as a technology was monitored to grow ethically, we wouldn't be upset now in the FOSS community.

AI models wouldn't have the immense powers they have now, because they wouldn't have stolen all humanity's work. But we always have slow government and parliaments that will act years after the disaster. Even then, big tech lobbying and corrupt money will shut them or slow them strongly.

If AI models were trained on public domain stuff, consent, and experiments with consenting parties, it would have been ethical, along with democratising and decentralising them from the first place. I worry we're heading to a global dictatorship that's in the hand of not the 'elite' as in numbered groups of people, anymore, but in the hands of three or four individuals controlling everything.

This weeks #Linux #distro test: #Deepin25 with #ollama running #deepseek-r1:7b locally as the desktop assistant on a older Lenovo T470 with 16gb of RAM and Intel video card.

The goal is to integrate Deepseek into the Deepin as an assistant.

Yes, I am aware that the #Linux kernel and other distros have been using #AI for some time now and in various capacities.

The backlash #Debian is receiving is because it isn't just another distribution. It's one of the oldest, it has a long standing reputation for rock solid stability, among many other strong selling points.

Given the significant and ethical problems surrounding AI, many feel this is a step backwards for the project.

Frankly, Debian has warts and other cultural problems that I would *much* rather see corrected before any AI use is even remotely considered.

• artix: i dunno, dbus wasn’t really working right + overall a little jank?
• gentoo: portage is so fucking slow + package masking is obnoxious
• void: its init system kinda sucks imo, confusing and weird
• chimera: musl libc throws a wrench into quite a bit of the software i use, as much as i love the idea
• nixos: extremely obnoxious to use in all the ways i hate most

I've been using Launchpad PPAs so far, which is limited to Ubuntu, but I also have Debian packages and would like to add packages for Mint and Fedora as well.

I've been testing Cloudsmith a little, and it seems fine, but I have no experience with these providers and don't know which one is the better choice.

Oh and funnily depending on how I try to read that folder name I get all three ways returned...

So I don't really know what this folder is actually called on disk.

#Linux really needs some debug tool to just hand you the hex of files and folders in a specific path.

And I feel pitty for everyone that has to deal with #UTF8 vs #UTF16 on the daily.

FIND yourself a a linux distribution or BSD that does reject AI; use it and donate to it.

If you can't move your daily driver move a secondary machine. Tinker with it, fit it into your life where it makes sense.

YEAH the linux kernel has slop. Most programming languages have slop. Most desktop environments have slop, you will have dependencies that are still slop. This is a big problem; there is no magic off switch to fixing this overnight.

We are in the early days of dealing with a contaminate that polluters are actively dumping into our digital environment.

It is going to take a long time before anyone can truly be slop free.

But support, and invest in the folks doing that hard work which will build a slop free future.

I am definitely impressed at what the FreeBSD ecosystem has to offer! The last time I used FreBSD daily was when the version was less than two digits long…. Unfortunately, I need sound to function due to music and occasionally zoom/teams meetings. That was the only hitch, everything else felt solid and professional. I’ll keep checking back because the fact that 99% of my software suite worked and easily accepted my configurations was beyond amazing.

Does anyone else have recommendations for a desktop BSD experience where sound just “works”?

#Debian was structured as a democracy of developers (maybe technically a platonic aristocracy, but it does not matter here).

Thanks to this, it got trust that turned it into a fundamental building block for #Linux users (most used distro are Debian derivatives).

Unfortunately, such trust also attracted commercial interest.

Now most of Debian Developers (just like most of #Linux kernel's devs) are corporate employees that would not be assigned to Debian development if they would oppose corporare interests.

So ultimately Debian cannot be trusted anymore: the vote on #LLM is just an evidence of this fact.

To people who use it since decades (I started with Potato because of its focus on #freedom), it's a pain.

Right now I'm slowly moving to #NetBSD.

My contributions to Debian thus far have been extremely small, and I'm sure they will not be terribly missed. I have a Brother HL-2140 printer that, for some reason, works properly only on Windows. On GNU/Linux and macOS, printing images often results in a horrible dithering effect because of the rather broken CUPS driver.

Now that we're living in the age of AI, and with increasingly capable models available, I had a thought: I already have the Windows driver, and I have access to Gemini, so why not throw a ridiculously long prompt at it and ask it to figure out how the Windows driver works, reverse-engineer the protocol, and build a proper CUPS driver from scratch? :)

So that's exactly what I did.

I gave Gemini the Windows driver and a detailed reverse-engineering task, let it work through the problem, and started implementing and testing what it came up with.

The result was honestly better than I expected. I was fully prepared to receive a giant pile of questionable AI-generated code, but instead it produced something surprisingly clean and functional. There's still plenty of room for optimization and cleanup, of course, but the basic result is already quite promising.

here's a side-by-side: the left side is the driver generated through the reverse-engineering process with Gemini, while the right side is the original CUPS driver.

It's a surprisingly good example of how AI can be used as an engineering tool rather than simply asking it to generate code and hoping for the best.

We'll see how far this rabbit hole goes.

AI is not about big tech: current trend is going all local with open models and training data. We are not there yet but what about FSF running it’s own AI?

There was a sense in the Inkscape project that it should be the developer team that decided what the AI policy should be.

I flatty rejected this.

Because most of the consequences for the project, for our users and for the world have absolutely nothing to do with developing software. It's reputation, risk, relationships and community standards and morality.

The last thing I wanted was important decisions to be pre-narrowed to questions of technical usefulness.

I'm beyond baffled to read this. "Responsible" use of AI, implies the existence of irresponsible use of AI, which at no point whatsoever, should be considered a valid option for a project the size of Debian but also for ANY project that is meant to be used by anyone other than the author.
You absolutely CANNOT submit contributions and say "oh this isn't me, I let the bot do it", this is not a thing. You submitted a thing, therefore you are responsible for it.

Results are in and Debian maintainers voted to allowing AI contributions with encouraged disclosure.

The winning proposal will hold the human contributor who uses AI accountable for the content they submit to the project.

I’ve been a long-time Kubuntu user, currently on 26.04 LTS.

Mostly because I want Debian-ish stability, KDE, reasonably current software, and something that will happily run on moderately elderly hardware without demanding a blood sacrifice to the upgrade gods.

And I increasingly want to escape the Canonical Slop™.

So apparently Debian is having an enormous philosophical argument about whether the robot should be allowed into the kitchen while I am standing outside trying to find an operating system that doesn't make me want to scream.

Which leaves me with the obvious question:

If I want KDE, stability, reasonably current packages, decent support for older hardware, no Canonical nonsense, AND a Free Software project that is taking the whole GenAI mess seriously… WHAT THE FUCK DO I RUN?

Debian Testing was looking so promising, too. 😭

I have decided to shut down my #mastodon instance, and all my public facing web services.

This will happen in 3 months time, on December 29, 2026, to allow everyone to backup and migrate.

The reason for this is that I can no longer trust:

- rails

Additionally, I'm basically out of storage, it is unaffordable to purchase more, and no one is interested in donating to help.

It's impossible to vet slop from an ecosystem that is welcoming of it.

This makes it nearly impossible to update my systems, which makes it harder to pretend it's even remotely secure.

I actually am rather surprised while at the same time being not surprised: this is the option that says "keep the status quo but call whatever you do 'responsible'". A very #Debian thing, indeed.

It even mentions that slop is probably breaking copyright (while at the same time carefully wording to not even actually state that).

(edited to add: if you look at the Graphviz result, you’ll see that, after this option, the pro-slop ones have landed over the pro-life ones; this (it’s preferential voting) makes me sad)

So, what does that mean?

No rage-quitting, at least. (This is very much in the interest of the users.) But also no improvement. But also no official sanctioning of slop.

I cannot believe I am saying this, but I’m actually rooting for… Helene Fischer, the GEMA, and the german Medienanstalten… to save us, by getting courts to recognise these issues.

The bubble is also already bursting, but not fast enough, which is raising the collateral damage each minute it has not yet burst. (Here I mean financial, trust, etc. but for #FOSS specifically, it also means that LLM-extruded digital asbestos gets added to more and more codebasēs in growing quantities, which will be hard to recover from.)

What I would like to know is why such an important topic has, what, under 40% voting participation. smh

Practically, what can we do?

Pretty much only this:

Ride out trixie without rsyslog (and without backports) until the end of its #ELTS, grudgingly installing kernel security updates. Avoid LPNs (npm, composer, pip, cargo, go get, etc.) at all cost (this is not new but now more important than ever). Use third-party repos only after manually checking for slop policies for both the repo and the softwares contained within (I had to split my own repo, I added a non-free component for ensloppified tomcat9 but kept the last one from before in the component with the main policy).

Check out unensloppified OSes as alternatives in parallel (seems to have only NetBSD as contender, among OSes capable of running similar enough use cases). Prepare to switch to unensloppified OS at any time, around 2035 at the latest. Do not hope that by then all the slop will be reverted from core system components (if it is, I will be pleasantly surprised, but right now, #Linux is dying).

Reduce computers and compute in your life.

And, if you can, fight this on useful levels. Not copyright licences, they ignore these and consent anyway. But: On a political level, up to and including guillotines, if you must. On an educational level, with friends, family, and even pupils/students. The younger generations are not lost. Make a worthwhile future, including human art, craft, crocheting, knitting, music, painting, woodworking, what have you. Doesn’t matter if it’s not good: it’s yours. Read books (from before 2020 or so). Go out, make train trips, cycle, garden, including fruit and vegetables. Care for your cats and other loved ones. And say no to fashtech.

I am disappointed.

My list of boycotts keeps growing.

We should be living with the conservation and sustainability of all things at the base of our decisions.

Our habitat, environment, air, water, food, forests, all life, and our energy! Electricity is a precious commodity that should not befall capitalist consumerism.

@Andres4NY so true story, I did try #zellij briefly and thought it was pretty (the mouse clickable tabs is nice) but the copy paste didn't work for me in #xfce and I just couldn't be bothered to figure that out when it works in tmux.

Here’s a question for you folks. I think it’s getting to the time that my current #Linux #Laptop needs to go into retirement and so I will be looking for a new one. What are your experiences with #AMD #Processors rather than #Intel #CPUs? I mean for things like software performance and overall satisfaction. I use my machine for normal tasks like editing and browsing/entertainment but also scientific/numerical computing.

I run gkrellm everywhere. Even on closed Source operating systems. The dashboard is designed in such a way that I can just glance and know if something is wrong, if some process pulls way too much, and then I get in with htop to granularly see what's going on

Hi! I'm looking for a simple to use HTTP benchmark tool which can simulate the page load by a browser: load the page but also all the linked assets (CSS, favicon, images…) without the need to write a scenario (listing all resources).
I thought Apache ab will do it but no.

There was a conversation on here a week (or two++?) ago that ranged into the "good ol' days" of optimizing DOS 640Kb memory using emm386 and the like with MS and DR DOS etc.

I kept thinking about that conversation and invariably started thinking about old windowing systems like GEOS on the C64 and Desqview on DOS.

Anyway, that led to wondering about text windowing systems beyond what you can do with tmux or screen or whatever.

Twin looks quite interesting. Need to have a play.
