# "Using LibreOffice and other Free software for documents as a lawyer"
I was asked recently about how I get on using LibreOffice for document-related legal work, and I promised to write down some thoughts.
The short answer is that I use a mix of LibreOffice and other FOSS tools, and I’m very positive about it, with no particular concerns.
If you have questions, please do ask!

If you use an old laptop as a server: Do you need to manage its battery in a certain way ?
This battery can be verry usefull when the electricity is shut down. But if it is always charged at 100%, does the capacity of the battery will decrease ?
If yes for the two questions: Do you know a libre software on linux to do it ?
Bonus questions: Is it possible, in linux, to run command(s) when the battery is bellow a percentage ?
Our fundraiser to "Sustain and Strengthen" GNU Guix has been running for a month. Time for a post on how we're doing:
https://guix.gnu.org/en/blog/2025/update-on-the-guix-fundraising/
We're at about 40% (€6562) of our €15000 annual goal. And, over 100 people have become recurring supporters - pledging between €10-€30 each month. This is a great start and we really appreciate everyone who's donated to Guix! 🙏
People have contributed through both our @fsf hosted funds and through Guix Foundation. Every donation help!
Excited to see how it goes through the next few weeks and what it means for the projects sustainability. 💪

I'm now convinced immutable/atomic distros do not remove ability to tinker. They just make it safer: Overlay your changes on top of the base. Something goes wrong, remove the overlay, try again!
Edit: I'm not saying everyone should use one, but for my use this is really good.

@kinnison @ifixcoinops I think you miss Dan's point. We're #Linux's current demographics, but he's talking about the demographics we want to reach (because we want to... right?). We can surely find the terminal if we need to, and most probably a) don't even close it; and b) can launch it with a keyboard combination.
I don't think I will be installing to friends and family the exactly same geek centered system I use. TBH, if I had to do it today, I'm not even sure what I would use.

Beyond the common ones, 0,$, gg, G, there are also some I use quite often:

Or '. The quote and the dot does the same but it goes at the start of the last edited line.
Of course, I love also { and } for paragraphs, and many others !

Hello, decided to log back into Mastodon as the bus to my town seems to have stopped a minute away from here for 20 minutes now. I have a few status updates regarding my tech adventures to share.
Firstly, I installed postmarketOS on a Samsung Galaxy S9 a few months ago, and with it, I moved to Alpine Linux on my laptop and desktop. The experience has been wonderful, but bumpy. It works really well on my laptop, but my desktop has faced some issues which I am happy to post on their mailing list once I am back home.
I also installed Arch Linux alongside my Alpine Linux installation as a redundant backup option in case one ends up broken by an update, or a mistake of my own. This has proven handy twice now, the second time ending up with my main system still under maintenance as of today. I also have a reserve Linux Mint USB, if it gets really bad, but I remain hopeful that it won't get that bad. Just for assurance, my ego has not inflated after installing it.
I still love using OpenBSD and FreeBSD when I can, but I deemed it more logical to use the operating system based off the kernel I want to develop for in the future. I plan on using OpenBSD on systems that I find to be not essential to use all the time, such as my brothers desktop, but I'm kind of bringing myself to use Alpine Linux on my daily drivers.
Sorry for disappearing for a while, this is a new phone which I forgot to install Mastodon on. My old phone drowned after my water bottle leaked during a walk, which meant I had to start over from scratch. I'm still addicted to Pixel phones however. Thanks for making a great operating system, #grapheneos team.

@culturepoub oui mais bon.
The Debian #Linux project plans to introduce hard dependencies on the Rust lnag into core components, specifically the APT package manager, starting no earlier than May 2026. The developer strongly urges maintainers of Debian ports for different architectures to ensure they have a working Rust toolchain within the next six months. In sort, Rust lang (toolchain) becoming a mandatory component of Debian's core infrastructure.
Doing some photo editing. Yes, in the evil #lightroom classic because I still haven't found my thing in #linux to do this with.
The only reason I still have Windows in dualboot on my desktop machine.
To everyone who says ‘install Linux’ as a solution to Windows problems (or ‘install LibreOffice’ as a solution to MS Office problems), imagine how you would react if you posted about Linux problems and all of the responses were ‘install Haiku’. Would it work? Maybe, but the person saying it has no idea what you do on Linux, whether the apps that you use run on Haiku (or have alternatives that you could switch to). Neither of you have a clear understanding of how much time and effort the switch would take, or what the network effects are that make switching hard.
If you have actually engaged with them, understood their requirements fully, and have a migration path outlined for them, great. If you’re just being a dick, think about how that makes people perceive Linux users: Maybe that isn’t a great way of driving adoption.

#Linux people of the internet, I am going to be moving from #LinuxMint to #Fedora, and I have a arguably simple question about file systems. Which is better? btrfs or ext4? I know fedora's installer has both but I am just curious as which one is better/more recommended over the other.
Does anyone here has experience with #slimbook #linux notebooks?
In particular I would want to run #popos on my notebook.
I once installed popos on a huawei notebook and ran into two problems: Hibernation did not really work and in sleep the battery drained like crazy and with the encryption of popos it sometimes didn’t boot anymore because it could not find a bootable drive. Without encryption it worked.

Yesterday I completed the migration from Authentik to Pocket ID on all of my homelab services!
I also included Tinyauth to link OIDC to a service without a login page.
Today, there was a part of me that silently made me think that get rid of my secondary domain and buying a new one was a good idea.
So here I am. Melting on the sofa after 10 hours of Ansible, OIDC clients, creating users, tweaking config files, VPN, Jenkins security and jobs configurations, plus your regular system administration.

Copying 20yr old backups onto the RiscPC via vsftpd running on Slackware AArch64 (HoneyComb LX2). Just another step toward getting the StrongARM RiscPC running Slackware again!
I definitely forgot how slow half-duplex 10Mbit Ethernet is:
~250 KB/sec feels like time travel 🐢💾
Fortunately I had a 100Mbit hub stashed in the loft, because the RiscPC's NIC wouldn't negotiate on the Gbit switch.
At this rate I might it might be finished for next week!
So, the first test of updating something on my now permanently offline recording studio PC (Win10) came up, and you know what? It was no aggro at all. Must have taken less than two of your earth minutes to plug/unplug/plug/unplug/plug the USB stick between the Win10 PC and the (safe online cuz it's Mint!) everyday laptop, to activate the new (V9) Moddart Pianoteq. Oh, I had to copy/paste something! Such a chore!! 😎
@sternecker Actually, yes! When Debian 13 came out a few months ago, I grabbed myself a complete set of amd64 binary and source code DVD images. (That's a total of 49 x 4.7GB DVD images, plus a few ancillary ones. All of them cryptographically verified and confirmed matching the release version hashes and signatures.) It wouldn't be completely up to date, and it wouldn't be quite as convenient, but it would give me a very workable starting point.

I'm running some tests on my old and trusted Raspberry Pi A+.
I've installed Raspbian - latest release, lite version. At the prompt, it's using 92 MB of RAM, mainly due to systemd and NetworkManager. As soon as you use it (even just for apt), it starts swapping and becomes almost unusable. It took 5 minutes just to install Python.
I tried NetBSD (on the same memory card): 35 MB of RAM used (including Postfix!) and it's totally usable.

Oh whoa, a lot of these are hacky and will break so I won’t use them, but for quite a few TUIs that support custom color palettes I’m tempted to go full catppuccin_mocha
Having a consistent color scheme across TUIs would make me feel more at home in my terminal
I use #Linux. If I may, a word of advice to fellow #Linux users, fan boys and zealots.
When someone toots about problems, or otherwise, in #Windows, unless you have something constructive to add, shut the fsck up about "just install Linux".
It makes you look like a dickhead, doesn't solve the problem, and probably gets you blocked. Not everyone has the ability or need to install #Linux. Regardless of how much better it is.
End rant!

@jakesmolka apt-based systems (basically Debian and everything Debian-based, including Ubuntu, Mint and several other major distributions) definitely let you run a local package mirror if you want. I think for something like Debian it's fairly large (like a few hundred gigabytes per architecture) and it's a bit of work to get set up, but definitely doable.
Look at apt-mirror.

I've steadfastly resisted doing this since I hate to do #Linux sysadmin work on my server and don't want to do it on anything else. But Windows has gotten ridiculous and Macs Just Don't Work.
Assuming I want to do this:
1) which distro is the least work?
2) what hardware should I get? I started with Macs in the first place because of zero fan noise so that's #1
3) what cell phone(s) should I get?

Think NetBSD is just some spooky, complicated thing for old-school hackers? Nah.
But all that legendary portability and rock-solid reliability? That doesn't happen by magic.
Every stable update, cool new feature, and wild new platform it supports (yes, even your toaster) comes from the hard work of the NetBSD community. And honestly, they're powered by support from people just like you.
When you donate to the NetBSD Foundation, you're directly helping to:
Keep NetBSD's code clean, secure, and ready for whatever's next.
Supercharge the build systems and infrastructure that our devs live on.
Cook up more docs, guides, and resources for new users and seasoned pros.
Make sure "Of course it runs NetBSD" stays a free-for-everyone reality.
Your contribution is what keeps NetBSD stable, modern, and running on (almost) everything. Pitch in to support the work that keeps #NetBSD awesome!

🕹️ Nearly 90% of Windows Games now run on Linux, latest data shows.
「 The milestone comes as we see computer users flocking to other platforms during the transition from the Windows 10 to 11 eras. There are different degrees of compatibility gamers must consider when checking if their favorite Windows games work on Linux distros like Mint, Zorin, Bazzite, or even SteamOS 」

Google Docs has a handy “Copy as Markdown” feature where you can paste rich text and then copy it out as (at least mostly reasonably-formatted) markdown. This is handy for quick and dirty conversion of a web page’s content, e.g. to quote in a blog post.
Is there some native app on Flathub I can use to do something similar? The perfect scenario would be just pasting rich text into a text field and it immediately converts it and spits out the Markdown into the text box.

Good morning Fedi friends! 🌈✨
Made it back to France and now I’m at my in laws’.
I forgot a wired keyboard at my parents’ in Italy and I only have a wireless keyboard and mouse with me, which were never paired to my Raspi. Mother-in-law came to my rescue and gave me an old wired mouse… and with #Ubuntu’s accessibility setting and on screen keyboard I was able to log in and connect my gear. Ouf!
Happy #Linux / #Raspi week to me (till I get home to Paris) 🐧
Now I had some powerful epiphanies yesterday, with my rickety Sharkey instance.
Sad to say that because it locked me out, and recovery codes aren’t working either, its fate is now sealed. I lost all trust in it and won’t spend any more precious time on it.
But this ONLY relates to my self-hosted Sharkey, which has been cursed from the start, not the software itself, which is WONDERFUL.
I’ll stop putting my energy on it and carry on with my plan (a quiet corner of the Fediverse) on @ruud’s calckey.world — which worked perfectly for me last year, when I was test driving Sharkey. Time to resurrect the account and set up monthly recurring donations.
Anyway, wishing you all a fantastic day!

@mkj @privateger This is all super helpful. Thanks!
At the end of the day, I have these 2 #ZFS raidz6 pools that are spinning rust. I have a SAS SSD that I can use to help speed up. I thought using it as a SLOG would help, but that doesn't sound like it will.
So can it help improve performance? (a) what role do I give it? and (b) is there a way to use the same drive to do this for both pools, or will that just create an I/O bottleneck that defeats the purpose?
So … while this is obviously nice for virtualized gaming, what about video decode/encode acceleration?
Is there a way to give a #Linux guest access to the host #GPU's video codec acceleration without GPU passthrough?
Just like it's possible to pass /dev/dri into a container, can I do a similar thing with a #QEMU / #KVM virtual machine?

@juergen_hubert Debian is a good choice for a Linux distribution IMO, and having support near at hand from people you already know is invaluable.
For Google Drive, I haven't tried that myself but rclone supposedly supports it, which will let you mount that storage at some arbitrary local path. https://rclone.org/drive/ (It also supports Nextcloud via WebDAV, so you can use it to transfer your files from one to the other in one go, relatively painlessly.)
I've come to the conclusion that, while I am still using #Windows 11 out of inertia, it's time to contemplate an exit plan towards #Linux . The switch won't be any time soon (I have too much other stuff on my plate for the foreseeable future), but I do want to avoid paying further license fees to #Microsoft .
Major areas of concern:
- My #Steam library. I am by no means a heavy gamer, but I want to check if the major games I enjoy are known to work on Linux.
- Migrating away from #GoogleDrive towards #NextCloud is going to be a major chore, but it's something I can start in advance.
- I am a very heavy user of Notepad++ for my #TeXLaTeX typesetting, so I need a replacement whose user experience comes close (and no, neither vim nor emacs count).
As for what distribution to choose... I dunno. Lots of people at my place of work use #Debian , so maybe that would be a good idea?

What could possibly go wrong.
Any #ZFS folks want to offer me an opinion on the following? I have 2 ZFS pool of raidz2 with 7 2TB SAS drives each (about 11.5T). I want to add a LOG drive. I have a single SAS SSD that's 300G. When I suggested using a 1TB LOG drive earlier, someone said that was way too much. (which is why I picked up a used 300G SSD)
My question is whether it makes sense (is possible) to partition that drive into 2 partitions and have one pool use 1 partition as a log drive (e.g., 150G) and the other pool use the other partition as a log drive on the same physical device.
Is this going to be worse because it's just too much IO on one device? Is it reasonable? Any other ideas?

I'm trying out Bazzite on my older laptop.
HP OMEN 15-ax252nr
Intel i7-7700HQ (2.80 GHz)
NVIDIA GP107M GeForce GTX 1050i Mobile
I installed an NVMe SDD a while back so the hard disk isn't a limitation.
It took two tries to get it installed. I went with KDE for a more Steam Deck like experience.
I'm having some issues.
I can't figure out how to add custom repositories due to the read only / filesystem.
Why would I need to do this?
I use https://www.insynchq.com/ to sync with OneDrive. It's how I keep Obsidian synced across devices. It's also where I keep my password safe that I load into KeepassXC for use with LibreWolf and that doesn't work with FlatPak installs.
I either need custom repos or a simple way for cross-FlatPak communication.
Docker introduces experimental nftables support in version 29.0.0. It means that Docker is starting to use the more modern nftables framework in the Linux kernel for managing container network rules, moving away from the older iptables system and you may gain some improved performance and flexibility with simplified rule syntax.
Docs are here

From my "crushingly dull obligatory tech history" in BSD Cafe wiki:
❮ Former Mac user (1992–2014; AppleSeed programme member 2009–2014). The GUI of OS X 10.10 Yosemite drove me away from Apple. I gradually switched from OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks to PC-BSD. Then TrueOS, then FreeBSD-CURRENT. In the midst of all that, something with FreeBSD in September 2012 … probably toying with 9.0 on a PowerPC iMac with failing graphics hardware. Not because I was a glutton for punishment (like, the horror of a command-line loader, and the certainty that hardware was failing) – because there was nothing good to be done with the Mac, and I was curious about non-Apple alternatives to Microsoft Windows.
Essentially: KDE Plasma on FreeBSD-CURRENT from around 2015 until 2025 … ❯

I think #FreeBSD is really starting to click, for server use that is.
Jails are super powerful, not to mention easy to operate with @BastilleBSD . And talk about lightweight...
Still not sure if it would be better to stick with #Linux +containers because they're so familiar.

Dual boot is when you reduce the disk used for one OS to install another OS on the freed space, and then be able to choose which to use at boot time.
Are there any good guides about moving music production to Linux?
#microsoft think my current, perfectly-good PC should become e-waste. So naturally I'd love to move to #linux and plan to have a drive on there for daily-drive stuff like web-browsing and the like.
But I've invested a great deal of money in software like #ableton Live, and a ton of VSTs which, by all accounts, are a proper ballache to get going under Linux.
I know #renoise and #vcvrack have Linux versions, and there are probably some ways to get #vst plugins to run, but what would I realistically lose moving to Linux?
I really, really don''t want to have to have a #windows11 drive, but it's looking like I'll have to.

I am planning on creating a video channel about #Linux named Linux Lorem (https://linuxlorem.com/). Now #PeerTube came up a few times. So that raises a few questions, including on how to use it in the future.
Now the big question for you: How often do you watch videos on PeerTube 📽️?
Would appreciate a boost 🚀 to get as many people responding and get a better picture.

Today I learned that in #Linux you can restrict users' ability to view processes owned by other users. Just add the "hidepid" mount option for /proc. In many systems /proc is handled automatically by systemd, but can be overridden by adding it to fstab. I just used the "mount" command to see what mount options were already being used and added a "hidepids" mount option, and added that to fstab.
There may be disadvantages to this, so be careful and watch for unexpected breakage.
If you complain that you have a problem with #Windows and are unhappy that people on Fediverse always bring up #Linux when you come here to post your complaint, I have a question: instead of here, have you tried the #Microsoft support or forums?
I mean at some point the "I just want Windows to work" is a fair and understandable point, but it will just be shouting in the wind if you don't bring your complaints to the people and company making it.
And I say that as an IT tech, I know how it works: if there's no support ticket about a problem, there's no feedback proof, and therefore the problem officially doesn't exist.
EDIT: to be very clear, I'm not writing all this with the intent of presenting MS forums and support as the best way to solve your problems with their products.
It's more that, as someone who deals with how tech support is handled on a daily basis, as I mentioned above, companies have processes for all that, and I can guarantee you that when it comes to handling feedback, they follow them strictly, especially when it comes to being held accountable for unwanted features or overall problems.
Users are being unhappy with ads or AI features and complain they can't deactivate them all? "Where are the tickets at our support to back that up?" is gonna be their answer. And we all know most of us, most of the overall user base never bother with that, leaving the gates full open for Microsoft to be like those aren't issues for the majority of users.

""Things feel fairly normal, and in fact the numbers say it's been a bit calmer than usual, but that's likely just the usual fluctuation in pull request timing rather than anything else. The diffstat certainly is pretty short and flat, I think the biggest change is from some smbdirect fixes (both client and server side), the rest really looks pretty minimal.
The high-level stats look very normal too, with half the patches being drivers (counting devicetree bindings there too), and the rest being pretty random and spread out. So we have the aforementioned smb fixes, some xfs fixes, and then random noise elsewhere. See the shortlog below for details.

Just rescued an Acer #chromebook circa 2014 from being binned.
Wiped chromos and installed #xubuntu 20.04
Went for an older version of Xubuntu out of caution. Gambling that a 2020 OS would be new enough to easily handle the hardware/driver setup but not be too 'big' for the Celeron 1.4GHz and 2GB of RAM to cope.
Result! It absolutely flies along!
And everything works 100%
So my question dear peeps is do I bring the Xubuntu bang up to date or "not fix what ain't broken"?

So, #AppImage is independent from your #Linux distro, it always works.
Except for… audio.
Because AppImage programs are statically linked, so they contain all libraries they need. And if they contain an old audio library using ALSA directly, they do not work with #Pipewire apparently.
Because the trick of Pipewire is to replace both #Jack and #ALSA libraries by compatible versions that then access Pipewire, not Jack or ALSA. But if the libraries are inside the program, this does not happen.
Pipewire now is the standard audio system on many distros.
Sad situation that is apparently the cause for me not being able to use #OpenSoundMeter.
Tickets have been filed on GitHub.
I could now try to compile Open Sound Meter myself. I thought I was over this. 🤪
Age makes you more cautious. I used to carry Debian CD's with me & do all my upgrades while in flight without electricity or Internet — just to test myself I could hack my way out of a screwed up GRUB or problematic #Linux build.
I'm taking my spouse's laptop all the way from #Debian buster to trixie this morning (going through bullseye to bookworm first), & I'm actually nervous. I *think* it's just because it's my spouse's machine.
Ironic thing is upgrades are so much safer these days.

I do have #openbsd as dualboot option together with #linux installed. My only problem with that is that a sysupgrade overwrites my grub and i then have to boot the linux installation once with a live-system to run a grub-install again.
I wonder if it is possible to avoid this annoying little step every 6 months.

U-Boot worked, but it slowed adoption of new Pi hardware and added extra layers of complexity we don’t need. Going native means a simpler boot flow, faster support for new boards and less friction for the user 🚀

I chose to use my trusty wget to download the image of Recall Box.
Getting it up and running is as easy as writing the image on a microSD card and booting the SBC from that card.
Apart from the SBC you also need to connect a USB game controller, since that is the primary mode of interaction in most games
There are a lot of systems available and for some systems you of course need the ROM.
For the Amiga I have the ROMs for the A4000T the A500 the A1200.
Having the physical ROM doesn't mean that you can already use them, because you need to be able to boot the machine after 20 to 30 years, have a video output that works in 2025.
Only then can you extract the ROM and put it in a file which should then put in the correct directory on your recall box
There are many gaming systems which do not need a separate ROM. On those you can execute games immediately. Just scrolling through the system directory will take you many minutes that's how many systems there are available.

@serge @Lilliana_S Yeah that's a good point. While one certainly *can* get somewhere with a generic introduction article or video (or book), I suspect the experience of learning to use #Linux is going to be most engaging and rewarding if you can approach it from the angle of "I want to do <X>. How do I do it in Linux?"
@Lilliana_S There are more than a few. Linux for Dummies, perhaps.
If you want something more cheat sheet oriented that moves past stuff for newbies:
https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/linux-unix/30-days-of-linux/
That's probably more than most new users want to learn in 30 days, lol.
I recommend Linux Mint (I use it, and I'm not a new user.) It defaults to the Cinnamon UI, which feels very familiar to users of other operating systems. If you're not using the command line, it feels like Windows or (somewhat) MacOS.
Read on for some more geeky stuff, all of which is about the command line, that you probably didn't ask for.
Some things to remember about the command line that get some new users frustrated:
The command line has quirks because of how key characters are interpreted. It also handles filenames differently than in the GUI.
Linux lets you use shortcuts at the command line, which is very helpful to programmers. It's a powerful scripting language. However, with filenames, it isn't conventional. In general, if something has spaces in its name, it works best to quote it. An example from ssh:
ssh 'my cool song.aif' me@other.computer:/home/me/Music
That successfully copies 'my cool song.aif' to your Music folder in your home directory tree on another PC.
ssh my cool song.aif me@other.computer:/home/me/Music
That will throw errors because it cannot find the files "my" "cool" and "song.aif". Quotes are your friend.
There are many Linux users who still use underscores instead of spaces in filenames because they "just work".
Single quotes mean 'literally this'. Double quotes call on the operating system to interpret text, some of which may be those shortcut commands to the operating system I mentioned above. If you are putting quotes around the name of a file, either will suffice, weirdly.
Oddly, a backslash, used in directory names in Windows, is used in Linux to indicate that the next character is to be taken literally, and not interpreted by the operating system. In single quotes, that won't work - it takes it as a literal backslash. In double quotes, it will.
Does file x exist?

head --lines=n x
Dump the last n lines of x to the screen
tail --lines=n x
Show the topmost directory
ls /
Show this directory I am in
ls .
(or just ls)
show the directory above this one I'm in
ls ..
Your home directory is

Maybe try Linux for Dummies. I'm sure other folks will have more recent ideas.
At worst, just ask people on mastodon. We might be slow to notice, but you'll get lots of too-involved answers. We promise!

I understand that using #Linux for #privacy is like the boy plugging the holes in the dike with his fingers. Everything I do online is monitored by one or more of the #faang no matter what I do (or I guess the acronym should be #manga now that Facebook is now Meta). It's just the principle of having to log into your own hardware like it was a website is so abhorrent to me. I should not have to beg #microsoft or anyone else for permission to use my own computer!
RDSEED is failing on AMD Zen 5 CPUs under certain conditions.
I disagree with the conclusion of the devs here.
You do not disable an entropy source just because it's failing. Flag it on boot that it shouldn't contribute to the entropy estimation, but keep it enabled.
It truth, you shouldn't be relying on any single entropy source, but several. Losing one source that is sending zeros to the entropy pool should not be concerning.

We’ve done various challenges in the past where we’ve bought Linux machines on a seriously low budget, but what if we had an unlimited budget? What would we buy in this hypothetical situation? It turns out we all struggled to come up with anything and are pretty satisfied with the machines we already have.
Note that this episode was recorded before we found out that Framework supports problematic projects.

I need some #Linux touchers and #HomeLab gurus to explain in excruciating detail what I'm doing wrong.
I want my #JellyFin server to be served over HTTPS.
I had nginxproxymanager running, but it has stopped working with Let's Encrypt.
What's the *simplest* way to add HTTPS to #JellyFin? It's an Ubuntu box with the default Jellyfin installed (no Docker or anything complicated like that).
Informed speculation welcomed!

# Running a law firm on Free software (2024 edition)
Finding @Gina's blogpost yesterday about running a business using FOSS reminded me of this update that I wrote about a year ago.
It needs a few tweaks to represent improvements over the last year, but on the whole, it is still largely accurate.
https://decoded.legal/blog/2024/09/running-a-law-firm-on-free-software-2024-edition/
Today I discovered that systemd supports what are called "drop-in" files to modify systemd services at start time. So if you want to make modifications to a systemd service that persist thru package upgrades (which may changes you've made otherwise), you can use them. The easiest way to do it is with:
systemctl edit SERVICENAME --drop-in=SOMENAMEYOUWANT
It'll create a drop-in file that gets loaded and will pre-empt other directives in the service.
Link: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Systemd#Drop-in_files
Brainstorming the easiest and most hands-off way to avoid manually editing my systemd service files to keep services inside their chroot jail even after updating a package, and at least with the Debian package version of #Jellyfin, there's a config file at /etc/systemd/system/jellyfin.service.d/jellyfin.service.conf that allows you to override the systemd service's default settings. So I just added my custom RootDirectory directive here.

apparently, Fedora has decided to allow LLM-generated code contributions given some requirements in regards to accountability of whoever submitted it And that sucks. and I guess I won't be supporting them as much anymore.

A friend with a flaky internet wants to migrate to Linux. They can't download the ISOs with just the browser. Remote help is hard too. They tried BT, but the binary they tried didn't work.
I'm looking for a no-thrills just-works install-less download-EXE-and-run download manager for #Windows that works on any ~current windows version (say, XP onwards? :). This last requirement is because I plan to suggest the same tool to other people who wants to migrate.
Boosts welcome.

There is one question I need answered before I can really explore that. How TF do I connect to wifi in #Linux without a GUI? I'm tentatively planning to install arch on it without a GUI.
Is anyone else finding that their network connections are VERY slow this week? I'm trying to decide whether the slowness and browser timeouts are still the aftermath of the big outage (so likely to improve) or an effect of my awful internet connection (so I need to yell at someone at my ISP.
DNS is probably involved, since the worst problems seem to happen when I try to follow links to servers I'm not currently accessing.
Does anyone have root DNS servers they favor?

MARVEL Cosmic Invasion set for launch on December 1 https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2025/10/marvel-cosmic-invasion-set-for-launch-on-december-1/
RHEL afficionados, help. Why does my RDP session to RHEL9 (xrdp) under Hyper-V suck compared to using RDP towards RHEL8 (xrdp) under the very same Hyper-V?
By "suck" I mean that in RHEL9 there are very obvious compression artifacts that don't clear up, like if a "final draw" action is never taken. In comparison, all is just awesome and wonderful in RHEL8.
I see the kernel module change from hyperv_fb to hyperv_drmdrmfb but "everyone" says it makes things faster and smoother, and here I am not able to see the difference between certain characters in the terminal sometimes.
Sure, disabling bulk compression in xrdp.ini will remove the artifacts but makes everything dead slow, and it's not needed in the RHEL8 VM so .. you know. wat givs.
@hexaitos Assuming that the 69794 in the dialog box title bar is a process ID, try opening a terminal and running:
readlink /proc/69794/exe
cat /proc/69794/cmdline
(Adjust as necessary next time the message pops up if you have already dismissed it.)
While it won't tell you *why* the process is doing something or *what* the process is doing to trigger this, that might provide a good clue as to which process is doing *something* which ultimately triggers this prompt.

"Untested backups are just expensive hopes and dreams."
Did some proper restore-tests of my offsite backups and restored them one after another into a local virtual machine (KVM) and verified that they decrypt, restore and boot correctly 🙂 (including our Mastodon instance burningboard.net)
It's good to have backups, but it's an even better feeling when you know, they work, restore correctly and the procedure has been tested.
All check marks green, next test in January 2026 🙂

Is #Thunderbird really the only standalone #Linux desktop calendar app that can just subscribe to #CalDAV calendars? 🤨
#GnomeCalendar needs a ton of dependencies and #GNOME stuff running.
#KOrganizer the same for #KDE.
#Evolution apparently just hooks into GNOME online accounts.
There are some terminal calendar apps, but yeah... If one has #vim keybindings and is configurable via config files, I am open to suggestions.
Use `set -euo pipefail` for more robust bash/zsh scripts. Exit on errors (-e), treat undefined variables as errors (-u), catch pipe failures (-o pipefail).

"The #Orca screen reader now announces caps lock state changes, and screen readers will now describe the Shortcuts and Autostart pages more optimally. A new grayscale color filter for people sensitive to colors, developers have done a full pass to eliminate bright flashes in the UI, and the desktop zoom feature will now follow the text insertion point. Keyboard navigation has been improved, and a few other small changes have been to improve #accessibility."

@jonnyevans The choice between #Windows11 and #MacOS is a false dichotomy.
There are plenty of other OSes available. Both a whole collection of #Linux distributions as well as the #BSD family of OSes. Many of which, for years, are drop in replacements for Windows and even MacOS.
The genuine lack of #Security and #privacy on both Windows and MacOS need to be taken seriously.
Welp... in researching & testing my way towards #Linux, one of the first things I've discovered is that "[Thing] is available for Linux" is nonsense.
There's no such thing as "Available for Linux".
There's "Available for some Linux'es & if you're lucky & willing to work hard for it, yours may be one of them".
Not sure I'm complaining, exactly; I understand why this is the case - but it sure as shit doesn't make the decision to actually switch any easier...
