And yes, the AUR is comparable to a website which tells you to to curl https://foobar | bash or maybe even worse.

Minor dramas involved mind you... when I changed out the 4070S for the 7800XT the DP->HDMI @60Hz dongle I need for the second screen came apart in my hands... trip to the store to get a new 60Hz dongle at some point soon. 30Hz capable cable to the rescue - but hard on the eyes I find.

At idle the box is burning ~1W less - I'll blame systemd for all the bazillion services it is constantly running.

A new version of #Forgejo is out 15.0.3
The earlier CVE-2026-27771 is a Gitea bug, and Forgejo was looped into the reporting. However, Packages under a public owner are visible to unauthenticated users by design. If you are publicly hosting, please make sure you understand the permissions model. (see below)

During that CVE stuff, a real authz bypass (any authenticated user could write to public repos they don't own) was fixed in 15.0.1 in May. So jump to 15.0.3 to get all the current security fixes.

Just rescued a water damaged laptop for a friend. The Laptop wouldn't boot anymore. So I took out the SSD and attached it via a USB adapter to my Linux Laptop and created a QEMU KVM virtual machine booting this device. After a bit of sweating Windows came up and I'm able to login to rescue the data inside the operating system.

Did a fresh Alpine Linux (v3.24) install today and finally got around to trying out getting Blender with ROCM working under Alpine Linux. The linked article shows how to use Distrobox with Ubuntu to run Blender on an unsupported distro, even works on a musl libc distro like Alpine!

I followed the instructions but the Blender (v4.5.3 iirc) that is in the repo for that version of Ubuntu (v24.04) didn't seem to work. I downloaded the latest Blender version from blender.org (v5.1.2) and installed it in the distrobox VM and it worked perfectly!

I'm going to try to do it using a more modern rocm supported distro in the Distrobox next.

This pretty much negates the last daily driver niggle for Alpine for me... other than the sftp annoyance I posted about earlier - which I can work around easily enough.

Anyone know why using sftp with Dolphin in Plasma is so slow in Alpine Linux?

Using Debian, doing the same thing is like greased lightning.

It's not network, ssh/scp/rsync/sftp command line works wicked fast between hosts with Alpine.

Something about Alpine and Plasma it seems. This has been an on-going thing.

Anyone know a workaround, beside using a different protocol I mean? This should "just work" like on other distros.

Welcome to #linux! It's super easy! To install packages, just use the GUI... oh. Oh that one. Well, that is super easy too! Just open a terminal and type pip3 .... oh, that? Yeah, you just have to figure out what a virtual environment is, figure out how to create one, whether to create a new one every time, how to manage it, and how to install your software using that! Oh you'll need some other libraries for that, and maybe to install some new things in the venv and oh yeah that's a common problem. It just means you have to... where are you going? It's super easy!

pipx seems like a good alternative except apparently it can't install what I need, for some reason. Back to trying to figure out how to set up and use virtual environments so I can install a damn thing.

Edit: It's not actually hard to do this, unless there are complications. It's just yet another damn thing to remember, and more steps to go through. Hoping this #pipx tool gets developed enough that it can do all of this with one command.

Edit 2: So I'm not That Asshole: what I did, from here

God damn. Gnome's "activities" overview remains absolutely genius design. You tap *one* button, and you have access to 95% of what you use on a regular basis. It's sad that other desktop environments don't have this.

Kürzlich ist mir doch offenbar tatsächlich eine #Sandisk #ExtremePro #SDcard im #AllenHeathCQ #Recorder abgeschifft.

Ein Teil der Aufnahme fehlt. Keine Fehlermeldungen in dmesg (#Linux) oder anderweitig beim Auslesen. Vermutlich ist einfach die Schreibgeschwindigkeit eingebrochen unterwegs.

Zum Glück nicht relevant für die Dienstleistung in dem Fall, aber wenn jemand eine #Aufnahme bestellt, darf das nicht passieren. Leider habe ich einen ganze Tüte voll dieser Karten, und auf keine mag ich mich mehr verlassen.

Kaufe ich nun die Sony Tough, 128GB für 99€ (Sonderangebot)? Aua aua aua!

Am Besten im Zweifel via USB-Strippe in der DAW eine Backup-Aufnahme mitlaufen lassen. Ungemütlich.

Einfach `sudo ncdu /` starten, durchnavigieren wie im Dateimanager – nur schneller und ohne Maus. Löschen direkt mit `d`.

So I've been using Shotwell as my photo organizer for many years. But it's old, creaky and only barely supported.

What should I use instead? What do you use? I need:

* Photo management (sorting, ranking, deleting)

* Handles 10k+ images fine

* edit with external editor (gimp)

* RAW support

* Runs locally on Linux

* Ideally, import from camera

* Ideally, export to Flickr

`tldr tar` hat mir mehr Lebenszeit gerettet als jeder Energy-Drink. Endlich entpacke ich Archive ohne im Kopf nach der richtigen Buchstabensuppe zu kramen. 🗜️

Go install CachyOS and somehow manage to change both the console font in Limine, and upon bootup, and then tell me the documentation is adequate.

I give up. I'll just squint while logging in. You'd think stuff would be smart enough to say "Gee, the screen is 1080p, maybe let's not use an 8x16 console font. 🤦‍♂️

I just wrote a little bash script to help automate live VM migrations between hypervisors (using libvirt/kvm/qemu style virtualization).

I really miss being able to focus on this kind of progress with my infra. Chasing money gets tiring... I just want to build cool things that people will use.

Also the forward about Evi is incredible. Her story alone is worth the price of admission. What a bad ass woman.

Weekend project that turned into infra I actually run daily: MastoSum.

The stack: RHEL host, 100% rootless Podman. Web on FastAPI, Celery worker/beat/flower, PostgreSQL 16, Valkey. All on userspace networking (pasta), images built & shipped by a self-hosted Forgejo runner. No root daemon, no privileged anything.

What it does: tracks technical hashtags all day and produces one daily briefing, every point linked to the original post + author. It reads only public hashtag timelines, credits every source, and trains on nothing.

And yes, an LLM writes the prose: a local Ministral model from French lab Mistral AI, running on my own hardware. No cloud, nothing leaving the box. Saying that plainly, not burying it. The whole design goal was to point readers *back* at the authors, not replace reading them.

Bin jetzt mit 40 Minuten Verspätung in Stendal angekommen. Ursache Regen und vernachlässigte Bahninfrastruktur. Dafür hübsches Bahnhofsgebäude.

Dank Internet konnte ich weiter am Vortrag arbeiten und den schon mal verschicken. Und der Linux-Laptop funktioniert perfekt auch mit Wackel-WLAN und Funklöchern.
