Updating firmware via Wine is tricky business. You can get really unlucky and end up with a brick instead of a functioning device. If it works, though, you'll end up with a Bluetooth-enabled controller that you can e.g. connect directly to a Steam Deck without having to hunt down an OTG adapter.

The power-management of the Lenovo T14s Gen4 AMD Ryzen has gotten significantly better in Kernel 6.17, WOW !!
5.77 W battey discharge with the 2,8K OLED display on 40% brightness and just 620.4 wakeup/s that is *a ton* better than anything, I've seen with that device in the last 2,5 years.
The powe-rmanagement for the Ryzen Pro CPUs was notoriously bad on linux.

💰 Fundraising campaign to sustain GNU Guix — 2025 — Blog — GNU Guix
「 As a package manager and GNU/Linux distribution Guix has some unique needs. As the distribution grows and becomes more popular our costs also grow. Each package that's added to the distribution increases the number of builds. And, as more people use Guix the cost of delivering those packages also grows 」

Okay, so let me tell you about my doorbell, from a #networking perspective.
When you push the button by the door, it sends a message over the #zigbee wireless mesh network in my house. It probably goes through a few hops, getting relayed along the way by the various Zigbee light switches and "smart outlets" I have.
Once it makes it to my utility closet, it's received by a Zigbee-to-USB dongle, through a USB hub (a simple tree network) plugged into an SFF PC. From there, it gets fed into zigbee2mqtt, which, as the name implies, publishes it to my local #mqtt broker.
The mqtt broker is in the small #kubernetes cluster of #raspberrypi nodes I run in my utility closet. To get in (via a couple of #ethernet switch hops), it goes through #metallb, which is basically a proxy-ARP type service that advertises the IP address for the mqtt endpoint to the rest of my network, then passes the traffic to the appropriate container via a #linux veth device.
I have #HomeAssistant, running in the same Kubernetes cluster, subscribed to these events. Within Kubernetes, the message goes through the CNI plugin that I use, #flannel. If the message has to pass between hosts, Flannel encapsulates it in VXLAN, so that it can be directed to the correct veth on the destination host.
Because I like #NodeRed for automation tasks more than HomeAssistant, your press of the doorbell takes another hop within the Kubernetes cluster (via a REST call) so that NodeRed can decide whether it's within the time of day I want the doorbell to ring, etc. If we're all good, NodeRed publishes an mqtt message (more VXLANs, veths, etc.)
(Oh and it also sends a notification to my phone, which means another trip through the HomeAssistant container, and leaving my home network involves another soup of acronyms including VLANs, PoE, QoS, PPPoE, NAT or IPv6, DoH, and GPON. And maybe it goes over 5G depending on where my phone is.)
Of course something's got to actually make the "ding dong" sound, and that's another Raspberry Pi that sits on top of my grandmother clock. So to get *there* the message hops through a couple Ethernet switches and my home WiFi, where it gets received by a little custom daemon I wrote that plays the sound via an attached #HiFiBerry board. Oh but wait! We're not quite done with networking, because the sound gets played through PulseAudio, which is done through a UNIX domain socket.
SO ANYWAY, that's why my doorbell rarely works and why you've been standing outside in the snow for five minutes.

#Floppy based #Linux installers, unlike Windows, did use the same Linux kernel for the installer…but unlike Windows they didn't have a GUI with a pretty background picture. If they did, they'd have had the same problem!

We could use some artwork: Drawings of Konqi and Katie for fundraising efforts. Here is a good example: https://community.kde.org/File:Konqui-donation-002.png
The promo folk will explain more what they need specifically, I'm mostly a messenger.
It is volunteer work (so very likely no payment) and the artwork will have to have permissive license such as CC-BY-SA. And I understand for many artists that's a lot to ask.. But you never know if you don't ask right?
There's different style campaigns for different holiday seasons. If you're interested, let me know here or my email, and I'll give out details how to contact the promo team. You can also chat with them directly through their Matrix channel: https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/promotion
Here's examples of various artwork we have: https://community.kde.org/Promo/Material/Mascots
Edit: I don't think there's participation limit either. :)
And yes, this makes you a contributor to KDE! :)

Asked my fellow nerds where to migrate from #NixOS, considering it's being overtaken by fascists, and there's no realistic way out of it. Here's what they came up with.
- Desktop: Opensuse Tumbleweed. Fairly new packages, rolling release, atomic updates with easy rollbacks, thanks to package manager and BTRFS snapshots.
- Dotfile manager: Chezmoi. Natively integrates with Git, has templating, integration with secrets managers, age.
- Service management: Cockpit. Not declarative, but a GUI; I'll take it. Provides handle to all server ops: updating packages, managing systemd services, managing containers, etc.
- Fleet management: Kubernetes on Talos Linux. Needs decent hardware and multiple machines, and is somewhat complex, so you'll know if you need it.
Share your other suggestions! Let's help each other migrate from a fascist distro.

Gang, if I were an org and I wanted to use #Linux for my workstations, I would be worried that the Linux desktop only holds together because it’s a pile of projects with a single maintainer assembled together.
1. How true is that for @kde? For @gnome?
2. Are there organizations providing paid support for the desktop use case?
3. Is there such a thing as fleet management for Linux? Active Directory support?
4. What needs to be tackled urgently to improve it?

Okay, new challenge on the upcycled #Linux laptop: I just realized the #battery appears to have some swelling. ""WE ARE NOT PREEMPTIVELY SUPPORTING BIG-ENDIAN ON RISC-V""
Linus send that to #LKML a few hours ago, after somebody asked if some of the big-endian work will make it into #Linux 6.18.
For the full thread, see: https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/CAHk-%3DwgYcOiFvsJzFb%2BHfB4n6Wj6zM5H5EghUMfpXSCzyQVSfA@mail.gmail.com/t/#mce138059dc56014643bbda330810183031ef5c06
There he calls the reasons documented on riscv.org as "craziness" and insane:
""In other words, it is suggesting that RISC-V add a big-endian mode due to
(a) internet protocols - where byte swapping is not an issue
(b) using "some RISC-V implementations don't do the existing Zbb extension" as an excuse
This is plain insanity. First off, even if byte swapping was a real cost for networking - it's not, the real costs tend to be all in memory subsystems - just implement the damn Zbb extension.""

New Guide: How to setup OpenMW for modern Morrowind on Linux / SteamOS and Steam Deck https://www.gamingonlinux.com/guides/view/how-to-setup-openmw-for-modern-morrowind-on-linux-steamos-and-steam-deck/
I’m worried my PC (running NixOS) might be infected.
I was looking at System Monitor & was surprised to see GPU at nearly constant 100% which it normally isn’t. What’s more, this activity seems to disappear once I start poking around and looking at running processes.
I’m guessing some kind of cryptominer which is clever enough to try to hide its activity.
Any advice what to do/what it might be? Unfortunately I have no idea how long it’s been going on.
Before Fedora updates, check changes with `dnf check-update` and review `dnf history`. Use `dnf versionlock` to prevent specific packages from auto-updating.

We had a production outage on our Mastodon instance burningboard.net:
Root-cause analysis:
At around 16:23 today, the Linux OOMKiller did terminate two processes: java (Elasticsearch) and a PostgreSQL checkpoint process.
The termination of the pg checkpointer did put the database in a weird state (all connection attempts just saying "the database system is shutting down").
Immediate resolve:
pg_ctlcluster 17 main stop -m immediate
systemctl restart postgresql
Actions taken:
- Added 4GB of additional swap-space to the system
- Upgraded PostgreSQL to Version 18.0
- Added memory-limits in the systemd overrides for Elasticsearch
Everything operational again 🙂

Fixed an annoying bug in my tar backup wrapper scripts where I was getting all the existing files and then deleting the oldest until I was down to X backups. This worked unless the file path had spaces in (e.g. /media/paul/WD Backup Drive). I tried faffing about with IFS, read, find -print0, sort -z etc. but couldn't get them to work.
Then I realised the spaces would never be in the filenames, only the path. So I did:
cd ${PATH}
// find and delete backups using '.'

#Linux folks: I have a patch that I'd like to get merged into `Kconfig` - the GTK4 port I was working on while back. Sadly, it looks like the subsystem has went orphaned recently, and as much as I'd like to step up to maintain it I lack the deeper knowledge about the configuration subsystem (it's pretty out of my field of expertise). What do we think, is there still a way to get the patches merged? If I want to do so, do I send them to the general build system maintainers?

Seems the Debian uprade fom 12 (Bookworm) to 13 (Trixie) had some unexpected consequences, as the symlinks for /usr/bin/yarn , /usr/bin/yarnpkg and /usr/bin/pnpx were broken. But a quick removal of the defective symlinks plus a "corepack enable" did fix those shims again :-)

Initial support for using a #btrfs block size (bs) that is larger than the system's page size (ps) has landed in #Linux-next[1] and thus is slated for inclusion in #kernel 6.18. From the patch-set's cover letter[2]:
""This series enables the initial bs > ps support, with several limitations: No direct IO support […] No RAID56 support […] No encoded read/write/send […]
Currently bs > ps support is only to allow extra compatibility, e.g. allowing x86_64 to mount a btrfs which is originally created on ppc64 (64K page size, 64K block size). […] But this should also open a new door for btrfs RAID56 write hole problems in the future, by enforcing a larger block size and fixed power-of-2 data stripes, so that every write can fill a full stripe, just like RAIDZ.[…] ""
And from [1]: "a feature that will shine in the future where 16K block sized device are widely adopted."

Deferred task context execution in BPF has landed in #linux-next and thus is scheduled for inclusion in #kernel 6.18.
From the commit description: ""This patch introduces a new mechanism for BPF programs to schedule deferred execution in the context of a specific task using the kernel’s task_work infrastructure.
The new bpf_task_work interface enables BPF use cases that require sleepable subprogram execution within task context, for example, scheduling sleepable function from the context that does not allow sleepable, such as NMI.""

This means distros that don't support systemd, including the BSDs, will need to incorporate work-arounds. The post also outlines what would be necessary to make that happen.

Cool debugging story time!
A few months ago, I was writing an integration test for the Nextcloud integration with OnlyOffice, to be run in a NixOS QEMU virtual machine. Curiously, I saw corrupt filesystem reads interfering with the test. That was the start of a journey that eventually led me into the core internals of the Linux kernel.
The issue seemed to occur under very particular circumstances, and was I convinced it likely only affected a very limited set of users - but I was determined to get to the bottom of it. I added diagnostic logging, which confirmed the issue appeared to be inside the Linux kernel. Sadly, when I attached a debugger, all it showed was gibberish.
With this challenge top-of-mind I joined the @why2025camp Dutch hacker camp, a great place to meet interesting people. Here I bumped into @raito who pointed me to a thread on the Linux kernel 'regressions' mailing list where several people were running into a suspiciously-similar problem.
Encouraged by the fact that the impact might be wider than I originally thought, I persevered and managed to get accurate insight from the debugger - revealing suspicious circumstances in the memory management data structures.
With the problem pinned down like this, I felt comfortable sharing my findings on the 'regressions' list. What’s more, I could share not only my description of the situation, but an actually-working Nix configuration demonstrating it. With that, maintainer Dominique Martinet could reproduce the issue within hours and write a preliminary fix overnight.
What looked like a bug in an obscure corner of QEMU turned out to be a subtle issue in the Linux Kernel Memory subsystem that, had we not found it, may have caused countless hard-to-diagnose problems in the future. Happy we could nip it in the bud!

So a few days back I distrohopped for the first time in years (I've been quite happy on Fedora KDE Plasma edition). Where did I hop to you might ask? Well, I went to Fedora Kinoite, which is the atomic version of Fedora Plasma edition. I did this, because I mostly worked inside distrobox anyway, and really don't have much need to modify the running system besides a few packages like tailscale. So, if I'm already treating my OS as an atomic distro, I might as well actually run one and get the benefits of easy rollbacks and nice, fast, and safe automatic updates as well.

Plugged in my EKSA StarEngine Pro headset on Fedora and thought it was broken — no sound at all over USB. Turns out the trick is you must keep system volume at 100%, then control everything with the headset wheel.
Fedora/PipeWire doesn’t force that automatically, because the headset advertises fake volume control. Basically: unless host = 100%, you hear nothing.
Works fine now, but really feels like a quirk that should be patched upstream.

Spent my morning figuring out why Nginx was dead on a server with many days of uptime. No reboot, no kernel panic. Just... down. Ubuntu 24.04.
The cause? An automatic unattended-upgrade of libc6. This prompted systemd to work its magic, wisely deciding to restart every running service to apply the patch. Fine.
The problem is, in the exact same minute, the systemd timer for certbot decided it was time to renew certificates.
The result:
- systemd stops Nginx.
- Port 80 becomes free.
- certbot, in standalone mode, immediately grabs it for validation.
- systemd tries to restart Nginx, which fails with "Address already in use".
The web server was knocked offline by its own certificate renewal script.
I swear, this is the kind of cascading failure that has never happened to me in years of running *BSD. With a classic cron job, certbot would have failed, logged an error, and tried again the next day. The web server would have remained untouched.
systemd was doing its job, but something failed because of the interactions.
Sometimes, too much automation and too many interconnected parts just create more spectacular ways for things to break.

Multikernel architecture proposed for Linux
A very exciting set of kernel patches have just been proposed for the Linux kernel, adding multikernel support to Linux.
This patch series introduces multikernel architecture support, enabling multiple independent kernel instances to coexist and communicate on a single physical machine. Each kernel instance can run on dedicated CPU cores while sha

My pro-tip for making x86 laptops much more pleasant (and more like ARM laptops): Turn on Power Saver mode.
In my experience this makes the fan _much_ less likely to turn on, the laptop run cooler, and the battery last longer. For basic browsing, videos, etc. the hit to performance generally isn't noticeable.
It's built into GNOME, but can also be done via https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/upower/power-profiles-daemon
Did you know you can use the watch command to keep an eye on output from other commands in real-time?
For example, if you want to monitor your CPU or SSD temperature continuously, you can do:
watch -n 1 sensors
This will run the sensors command every 1 second and refresh the terminal display with the latest output, giving you a “live” view of temperatures, fan speeds, and more.

Fourth, I want to enable hardware acceleration on the EliteDesk for a VM running Jellyfin (in Docker) using the i7-9700’s UHD 630 iGPU. The Proxmox docs are vague on Intel GPUs, so I need a clear guide specific to this CPU. The networking issue is the most frustrating - has anyone seen a bridge drop connectivity when a VM stops? Any suggestions for troubleshooting or fixing this? I’d really appreciate pointers to resolve these problems.
Second, my Dell OptiPlex runs a Proxmox Backup Server VM with Backblaze B2 as an S3 datastore, and it’s working fine so far. Third issue: on the EliteDesk, VM backups (using default LVM-thin) take ages and often freeze at 1-2%. Shutting down the VM cleanly afterward is nearly impossible, whether I use Stop or Snapshot mode. This also triggers the networking issue. Would switching to ZFS help? How can I migrate to ZFS without losing my current setup?
I’m new to Proxmox and struggling with my homelab setup on two machines running Proxmox 9: an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Mini (i7-9700) and a Dell OptiPlex 7070 Micro (i3 9th gen). First issue: on the EliteDesk, I have two Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS VMs sharing a bridge. If I stop or shut down one VM, the other loses internet access, though I can access applications locally. Any ideas why the bridge fails like this? What can I check to fix it?

Another Linux-first phone, based on Debian, has been launched - the @furilabs's FLX1s.
$550 plus delivery, taxes, customs charges etc.
I'd be interested to give one of these a try at some point.

Danke schonmal vorab.

GNOME 49 is here, faster, sleeker, and smarter than ever! 🚀
QUESTION au sujet de
#Linux :
- fournir une app web (offline-first) à fonctionnalités équivalentes
- ?

I installed Arch Linux onto a 128 GB USB stick. You may think "So, what?" but this has been incredibly useful.
I can use this system to do all sorts of data migration shenanigans and it will remember all my settings. Whenever I need access to the data on a different machine, I just plug it in.
Everyone should have one. 💾

#Linux users I'm begging you, if someone brand new to the ecosystem comes asking where to start, please don't start listing desktop environments and packaging formats. They don't care about that shit. Just recommend a good user-friendly distro like Mint, and let them come to you if they have more questions. Otherwise you're just going to overwhelm and/or irritate them.
