No, not copy_fail, a new one, called DirtyFrag, combining CVE-2026-43284 and CVE-2026-43500

Apparently the finder was gonna disclose this responsibly, but they claim the embargo was broken by a third party.

Most probably not patched yet in distros, but fix (at least for one of the CVEs) is in mainline.

Seit angelernte neuronale netzwerke allerlei programmierfehler und sicherheitslücken finden können, haben auch die admins von linux-sörvern ordentlich was zu tun.

Wisst ihr, wo man auf diese weise gar nix zu finden scheint? Richtig: in den diversen Freien BSD-unixen. 😉️

Wer — wie ich — linux als desktopsystem benutzt, sollte nicht in panik verfallen und auf die sicherheitsaktualisierung warten, die sehr bald draußen sein wird. An fette neue kernel zum daunlohd haben wir uns alle ja in den letzten wochen gewöhnt. Es ist schon wieder eine ausweitung von normalen nutzerrechten zu administrativen berechtigungen, und der fehler ist copy fail recht ähnlich. Um diesen fehler auszubeuten, muss man erstmal an nutzerrechte kommen.

Bei einem sörver, der permanent als opferrechner direkt am internetz hängt und diverse prozesse unter benutzerkonten mit geringen lokalen rechten im internetz zur verfügung stellt, kann man sich so viel gelassenheit leider nicht leisten. Ein klein aussehender zweiter fehler in irgendeinem laufenden dienst oder in so etwas banalem wie der programmierung einer webseit in einer skriptsprache, und schon hat man einen sörver anderer leute. Und wer will den schon haben? Häcker häcken.

Und nein, der umstieg auf windohs ist keine junge naive… ähm… alternative:

Wer nun glaubt, das sei ein Linux-spezifisches Problem – mitnichten. Seit drei Wochen klafft etwa die Zero-Day-Lücke „RedSun“ offen in Windows, ohne dass Microsoft Anstalten macht, einen Patch dagegen auszuliefern. Auch diese Schwachstellen – insgesamt haben sich auch da drei angesammelt, neben „RedSun“ auch „UnDefend“ und „BlueHammer“ – ermöglichen die Rechteausweitung und werden bereits von bösartigen Akteuren missbraucht

Und windohs ist das lieblingsbetrübssystem der kriminellen. Teils wegen fragwürdiger dieseinentscheidungen aus den achtziger jahren, aber noch größerenteils wegen seiner verbreitung.

I am already making a list of all the software I routinely use in Windows (that's how I noticed mp3tag/FormatFactory don't have Linux support), and have all my data on NTFS external hard drives that I've been told I'll be able to move to Linux once I have it.

I couldn't sleep, so I got up at 5 am this morning.

To kill some time before work, I wrote a new Python-based proof of concept for Copy Fail based on the original, but one that is easier to read (I don't care about the byte size bragging rights) and which does not push a payload into the page cache of a setuid exec (which is bad). Instead it just overwrites text on a temp text file. It works great!

I got the idea from the copy-fail-c implementation on GitHub.

The key to this customization is a program called 'cortile' while brings features of a tiling window manager to X11 desktop environments.

The second is binding a keyboard shortcut to the "Overview" feature in KDE. By default, the Overview is activated by the top left 'hot corner', which I found by accident.

I want to focus on one window at a time and not have to worry about its position. Setting 'cortile' to the Maximized setting and the Panel Configuration Visibility to 'Dodge Windows' gives me what I was looking for.

The Overview is now tied to a keyboard shortcut and acts like rofi would, as a window and virtual desktop switcher, as well as an application launcher.

In KDE System Settings, keyboard shortcuts can be configured for switching virtual desktops and moving windows between virtual desktops. It is a bit fiddly and takes quite a bit of time to figure it out, but KDE does not disappoint with with how much it can be customized.

I think this concept and integration of cortile would also work well in the Cinnamon desktop environment (haven't yet tried it), though Cinnamon may not quite the same feature as KDE Overview.

Im Web gibt's dazu verschiedene Anleitungen, die eine zusätzliche Installation eines Programmes beschreiben.

Aber es ist viel einfacher!
Ubuntu hat schon alles, was dazu nötig ist:

Systemeinstellungen -> Netzwerk -> VPN -> +Zeichen klicken ...

... und dann mit dem Punkt [Aus Datei importieren] die vorher erstellte Configdatei auswählen, Verbindungsnamen eintragen ... fertig.

Danach gibt's im Systemmenü einen VPN Knopf mit der Bezeichnung (Verbindungsname), die man bei der Einstellung angegeben hat.

Already in two different OSes (#AlpineLinux and #Devuan Linux), Firefox crashes (that "Gah your tab crashed!" message, or downright segfaults to death) less than 50 seconds after opening. And it's *any* firefox I can pull off - standalone Linux version, AppImage, Distro Repo, Mozilla Repo, you name it. They *all* crash randomly between 5 to 50 or so seconds after opening.

Other browsers seem to be working correctly, as is every other application installed here. Why TF is only the browser doing this?!

This is super frustrating, and makes me feel that there must be some hardware problem with this PC. Faulty RAM, perhaps? Wonder if there's anything I can do to save it (the PC, that is)

Fastfetch was not in the repositories, probably due to Zorin being based on a slightly older Ubuntu LTS version.

I'm about to go help someone move from Windows to Linux, and this person is not particularly tech savvy. And it just occurred to me that I can't really think of good distros to demo that showcase GNOME or KDE. The main "newbie friendly" distributions I have now are Linux Mint, and Pop! OS... But when it comes to the "big 2" desktops, I can't think of any that I feel great about:

• Fedora (my own desktop OS) and its atomic versions: Great OS, but having to use RPM Fusion for hardware video acceleration disqualifies it because that's always a pain point during upgrades.
• Ubuntu: I'll use this to showcase GNOME, but I'm not particularly happy with the current direction of the project, especially with their latest focus on AI. And considering that the person I'm helping wants to get away from copilot and AI, I doubt she will enjoy that either.
• Debian: Haven't used this on a desktop in forever, and never considered this very newbie friendly.
• SUSE: never made me super comfy, so why would a beginner?
• Bazzite: too gaming focused, but the experience is great for the rest.
• Aurora/Bluefin: Never used it and don't know anyone who has, so I'm not going to experiment on someone who hasn't used linux before.

So for now, I'm choosing TuxedoOS for KDE, and Ubuntu for GNOME, but I can't say I'm truly happy with either of those choices for this use case.

Anyone else having issues connecting to the Debian wiki? I get the initial anti AI screen or whatever it is and then it gives me a "Forbidden" page.

Accessing via VPN works but from my normal Bell CGNAT IP does not. It's not a 403, just a text pages saying Forbidden.

Did the Debian admins block Bell Canada residential IP ranges by mistake?

Ich bin an Linux Mint & Fedora gewöhnt. Beides OS, die unauffällig im Hintergrund laufen. Ab & an probiere ich neue Linux-OS auf meinem alten Laptop aus. Heute war es PopOS, weil ich den Cosmic-Desktop hübsch finde. Hübsch ist er, doch obwohl PopOS auf Ubuntu aufbaut, war es ein sehr instabiles Erlebnis mit vielen eingefrorenen Bildschirmen, inkonsistenten Icons & nicht mehr zurück finden zu den ursprünglichen Konfigurationen.

Ich installierte ihn erstmals auf meinen Fedora Rechner. Mit Touch Screen & Screen Rotation kann er aber leider noch nicht umgehen. Also dachte ich, auf meinem alten Dell-Laptop wird PopOS eine gute Figur machen.

I did the non-standard install thing with Solus (root on btrfs, add a mirror after the fact).

Looks like Friday's set of patches and new kernel (7.0) broke the boot. Reverting to 6.8 is also broken.

I've been futzing with it on and off for the last couple of hours. About to give up and repave with a different distro me thinks. Shame.

I'm planning a project to build a Linux laptop. Likely Mint (Cinnamon I think?) Linux on a 2016 Dell Precision machine with an i7 CPU, 32GB RAM and an MXM 4GB GTX965M Nvidia card (ie decent specification). A few questions for planning -

1) Can I run Win10 apps eg WhatsApp Desktop under Linux?

2) Are there any limitations if I want to run a dual boot into both Linux Mint AND Win10? I am thinking about the boot-mode here eg Legacy vs UEFI. No I won't be moving to Win11 ever I hope.

3) Anyone with experience/knowledge of running Linux with Nvidia Optimus (which toggles between the integrated Intel GPU and the Nvidia GPU especially for regular use vs gaming)?

All thoughts and advice appreciated in advance!

If you use #Linux and are using a #Debian or #Ubuntu based distro, one thing I would recommend for installing .deb files (ones you download from outside your repos), is to install "gdebi" and use that to open and install your .deb packages instead of your "Software Center". Reason being, "gdebi", before it actually installs anything, lets you browse the contents of the package, read the contents of control files like postinst, etc. to make sure it isn't doing anything shady.

Really asking for a "Pray tell us", given that nobody actually bothered disclosing the problem to downstreams and that the commit message was hiding it.

Either way, apparently the great LLM-backed patch backporting process that #NVidia is so proud of doesn't really work. Upstream doesn't really care about #LTS branches, and they should be considered insecure by default.

Hab' die Woche mein Fedora-Linux mit KDE-Oberfläche auf eine neue Version upgegradet.

Button klicken, Download abwarten, neustarten, Paketinstallation abwarten, fertig. Hat keine 20 Minuten gedauert.

Keine Probleme mit TPM, kein neuer KI-Assistent, den ich nicht will, kein Online-Zwang, nix.

Sogar mein Desktop sah noch genau so aus wie vor dem Upgrade.

Weiß echt nicht, warum man sich den Stress mit Windows geben sollte... 🤷‍♂️

Exemple: Si j'installe le vieux "Microsoft Media Foundation" (des composants média qui datent de Vista), ça fait planter "Journey to the savage planet" (un jeu sorti en 2021). 😒
Je vais peut-être revenir à une version avec juste les runtimes vraiment nécessaires (vcrun2026,xna40,dotnet4,openal,physx,dxvk,vkd3d) et éliminer les vieux trucs.

It's original intent was well-meaning: Prevent apps from messing with user defaults, like the browser or installing unwanted extensions or toolbars.

Linux doesn't have any of this, AFAIK. Malicious software could change all sorts of user defaults. This could become a real problem with its growing popularity. 🤔

Fresh gist: mitigating CVE-2026-31431 ("Copy Fail") on RHEL 8/9/10 with a tiny Ansible playbook.

It blacklists algif_aead via a kernel boot arg (initcall_blacklist=algif_aead_init), reboots only when needed, and asserts the mitigation actually stuck after reboot. Idempotent & safe to re-run.

Put #CachyOS #Linux on my daughters old and slow laptop yesterday. I've never used Linux before so it was a bit daunting at first but ended up being really easy to install and set up, and she loves it :) Its suddenly nice and fast and gaming is 'good enough'. Laptop is like new! My gaming desktop is next 🥳

On these displays you see the SBC in action. The screen on the lower right belongs to a very old sturdy notebook which couldn't even run an important piece of OpenSource software I use to make certain types of connections. I had to degrade The Notebook to a music player after I got it out the two and a half inch hard drive
