What's your experience been like with #USB #audio interfaces on #FreeBSD? I have a spare 1st gen #Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and 2nd gen 18i20 ony bench now.

The 2i4 works natively under #Linux just fine, but the 18i20 requires (last I checked) some finagling with a custom driver. I have not tried either on FreeBSD.

Today I Learned:

That the included program ‘ntfsfix’ can be used to clear the record of bad sectors on a Windows partition.

I had cloned a Windows system from a bad hard drive that had some bad sectors. The file system log that noted those bad sectors came over in the clone, even though the drive I cloned it to is fine and has no bad sectors.

Found the problem when I was trying to use gparted to shrink the partition.

sudo ntfsfix -bd /dev/sda4 

After running that, gparted let me shrink the partition

Julitipp: Die leihweise Überlassung von betrieblichen Smartphones, Computern & Co. Nach § 3 Nr. 45 EStG ist die leihweise Überlassung an den Arbeitnehmer von betrieblichen Datenverarbeitungs-, Telekommunikationsmitteln und der Programme für private Zwecke steuer- und sozialabgabenfrei. Darunter fallen z. B. Laptops, Tablets, Smartphones, Notebooks und deren Zubehör wie Monitor, Drucker, Scanner, Beamer, Sim-Karte, Ladegeräte, Laptoptasche und Software. Die Geräte müssen aber ebenso in dem Betrieb des Arbeitgebers genutzt werden. Solange die Geräte im Eigentum des Arbeitgebers stehen, ist die Installation, Inbetriebnahme und Reparatur durch einen IT-Service steuer- und sozialabgabenfrei. Im Lohnkonto sind keine Aufzeichnungen bezüglich der Überlassung aufzunehmen. Und auch umsatzsteuerlich entsteht keine Steuer, solange die Geräte im Eigentum des Arbeitgebers bleiben. Um sicher zu gehen, dass das Finanzamt keine Übereignung der Geräte an die Arbeitnehmer unterstellt, sollte die leihweise Überlassung im Arbeitsvertrag geregelt werden. Hinweis: Wenn das Gerät später an den Arbeitnehmer übereignet wird, entsteht steuerpflichtiger Arbeitslohn, der durch den Arbeitgeber nach § 40 Abs. 2 S. 1 Nr. 5 EStG pauschal versteuert werden kann (bei kostenfreier Übereignung). In diesem Fall fällt in der Regel Umsatzsteuer an. Moreover, you should think of something about phones and tablets with healthy hardware but outdated software. So many companies especially in China stop the software updates/upgrades after like 2-3 years. And moreover, they also make it too hard for the #FOSS communities to come up with alternative operating system for these devices.

Some companies lock the device to prevent installing custom OS.

Some other violate #GPL and they don't release the #Linux source code for their devices.

Some release the GPL code with a 1 year delay. Which means FOSS community is 1 year behind to bring custom OS to the device.

All of these contribute to #ewaste and they harm the planet. And many people are forced to buy a new phone/tablet every 1-3 years to get a newer Android version.

Ok, I think I'm getting in over my head on this computer problem, any help much appreciated! (Linux/Opensuse TW/KDE/btrfs)

Symptom: Everything that tries to save something to my home partition (configurations, sessions, kwallet, etc.) says that I have no space left, and thus won't work. Some programs won't even load (Vivaldi, Steam). Every file manager I have tells me that I do have space left.

History: Before this happened I had tried updating a game in Steam thinking that it would warn me if there wasn't enough room on the disk to do so (silly me). Then the whole desktop crashed and I had to restart.

Tried: 1) deleting several GB of files. I can now download files to /home, but all the other stuff still won't work.
2) running fsck from bootable flash drive. Mostly didn't do anything. Finally got it to tell me to use btrfs check instead (I am using btrfs).
3) I did that and it told me that there were errors. The only things that looked like errors was in "Checking free space tree" where it said "Space key logical (number) length (number) has no corresponding block group" twice with different numbers.
4) Not being terribly familiar with btrfs yet, I read the fine manual for btrfs check. There were lots of warnings about not trying to repair a btrfs without experienced help, else risking your volumes. So here I am.

Corporations mean you have to buy a new phone every 1-3 years because the parts won't be available. And also software support will end.

#FOSS means an HP Elitebook 840 G4 from 2013 is me daily driver.

Do you know phone manufacturers don't want a FOSS Operating System on their devices? Because they will have trouble selling new phones when the old ones still work good. That's why they lock the devices and also don't release the #Linux kernel source code, doing a #GPLViolation.

#linux on Snapdragon laptops is interesting; it's pretty usable for me; but there's lots of patches still flying around - but Qualcomm do seem to be sending lots of patches upstream, so it's good to see that.

Fazit: Für einen 15 Jahre alten E-300 ist dein System sicherheitstechnisch bereits überdurchschnittlich gut abgesichert. Der größte Risikofaktor ist heute eher die begrenzte Hardwareleistung (z. B. beim Surfen mit modernen Webseiten) als eine fehlende Härtung des Betriebssystems. Neuen Laptop für die Arbeit beschafft für über 1600€ mit vorinstallierten Windows 11. Ohne Internet Verbindung kann man Windows nicht starten. Es geht nicht. Ich kann diesen Dialog nicht überspringen oder so. Hier ist Feierabend. Außer ich geh direkt Online und lass die Karre nach Hause telefonieren. Ist das eine Scheiße. Have any other users of Bitwarden on Debian with GNOME (might be applicable elsewhere too) noticed a Remote Desktop permissions prompt with the latest (2026.07.0) release?

In my case, installed via flatpak.

This seems like a worrying thing for a password manager, and I cannot see anything in documentation / release notes which mentions it - but I might be missing something.

Musste gerade Windows 11 auf einer virtuellen Maschine nutzen, aus Gründen, es war ein komisches Gefüh - was macht es, macht es noch was, was soll das jetzt, auf was wartet es, warum tut sich nix, wieso ist das so umständlich 😂 wie schnell man sich an was Besseres gewöhnt hat. Beim Arbeitgeber erwarte ich diese komische Software und grausliche experience, aber sobald ich einen privaten Rechner einschalte, erwarte ich ein funktionales OS mit Performance.

Guys, it’s been a long time since I’ve been this happy with a computer purchase! Fedora recognized all my hardware perfectly right out of the box, and everything works great!

I’ve had very different experiences with my various mini-PCs made in Chinese factories using child labor, especially with the built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth cards...

Thunderbolt 4 is also recognized correctly, as are all devices connected to it. That didn’t work at all or only partially with the others (for example, the monitor only worked via the USB-C port on the monitor, but there was no image via the monitor’s Thunderbolt port; when the Logitech receiver was connected through the monitor, the mouse movements and keyboard inputs were choppy, etc.). But here: problem-free and fast via a single Thunderbolt 4 cable!

The installation was done in a few minutes - that’s Linux for you. A Windows installation takes many hours for this… and then you’re left with nothing but spyware and ads on your computer.

Conclusion: Asus NUC 16 Pro - highly recommended for every Linux user!

I am trying to convince folks on #JMA to add another #CTF server to the network. I am hoping I could get a big enough VPS from #BoxyBSD then run the #gameserver on #freebsd

The main objectives I have is evaluating FreeBSD to run a #Luanti gameserver. Some sources indicate that FreeBSD has better networking and IO management than #Linux. So this case might apply.

Other than that, we'll also have a secondary CTF server in the case main server is full or laggy.

I guess this could be approximated by creating and immediately deleting a temporary file:

It's not quite as clean as “just open /dev/memfd lol” and does still involve securely generating a temporary file name, though.

Also, if you're on #Linux, you might want to use `mktemp -p /dev/shm` to prevent the temporary file from being written to disk. (#FreeBSD doesn't have /dev/shm.)

I wish #Linux (and #FreeBSD) had a device /dev/memfd that, when opened, actually gives you a fresh memfd.

Then you could use memfd with shell scripts:

cat /dev/fd/3

It'd be like using temporary files, except they automatically get deleted when the script terminates, and aren't visible to other processes (so there's no need to securely generate a temporary file name).

Par contre, il y a du choix, plusieurs manières de faire. C'est une de ses grandes forces mais forcément ça perd les novices.
D'ailleurs, si on installe une Debian, les choix par défaut conviennent (généralement).
Linux à l'air plus complexe parce qu'une installation inclus l'OS, les drivers, et les applications. Idem pour les mises à jours. C'est bien plus simple qu'avec Windows.

While watching a movie over my beamer (sound comes over my PA, the problem remains when the beamer plays the sound as well), the sound and movement of lips are asynchronous, which is quite annoying. I look online to find a solution, but found nothing.

Ich benutze seit 30 Jahren #Linux, und komme mir immer noch wie ein Anfänger vor.
Ich bereite gerade eine Vorlage für ein Nutzerverzeichnis vor, damit die Nutzer beim ersten Anmelden möglichst wenig Stress haben. Die vorbereiteten Dateien kopiere ich dann beim Systemstart in die jeweiligen Nutzerverzeichnisse.
Der default-browser wird in .config/mimeapps.list gespeichert . Diese Datei ist in meiner Vorlage nicht vorhanden - warum ist bei user1 der Default-Browser firefox, bei user2 konqueror???

Ok, I think I've got this display card under control - or so it seems. It hasn't crashed since Wednesday.

I guess this is a combo AMD RDNA3 Navi23 and KDE Plasma (+ Wayland?) bug...

I backed out all my Linux kernel command line switches for AMD GPUs and it crashed to green screen in less than a half hour. So, re-adding them stopped that from happening.

And then the cursor thing is fixed <?!> by adding

KWIN_FORCE_SW_CURSOR=1

Currently this is what is set:

From a user experience point of view I don't see any difference with that software cursor setting.

There's another wrinkle to this that might be a factor but I can't really test around it currently. This is a multi-head machine and one screen is connected via HDMI and one is DP.

Perhaps this wouldn't be a problem if both screens were connected via the same type of connector.

Both screens are set to the same refresh frequency. But, in the display control app one reads back at 60.00 Hz while the other is 60.000 Hz. Minor thing right? But in trying to make this work I've seen references to AMD GPU weirdness in multi-head configurations where the refresh rates were different between screens. Red herring perhaps.

Anyway, don't know if there are (or will be) any people trying to make a RX 5800 XT GPU behave under Linux but this seems to be what worked for me and my dual head setup. I'll update if anything changes.
