Now people are starting to understand that just going with Big Tech may be easy to start with, but ends up not being worth it. In fact we now have governments and companies thinking that they need to move away from Big Tech and quickly.

Again, I want to reiterate my love for how the #SteamDeck and now the #SteamMachine will bring back the market for older, beloved games. There isn’t a better platform for playing something like #Quake or #DeusEx than the consoles #Valve made, and they’re extremely accessible via the #SteamSale or something else.

What’s more is the work they’ve put into #Proton, a free platform for making #Linux, a free OS the perfect #gaming platform.

Had to get the scanner working and this was the first time trying KDE Skanpage app (flatpak - not in Alpine repos).

It automatically found my wife's Epson Artisan 837 (i.e very old - ~2011!) even though it's on a different subnet. Simple interface, much less friction than expected.

It's nice when stuff 'just works'.

Ich musste gerade einen Rechner für die Arbeit besorgen. Dabei habe ich mich mal wieder mir Prozessoren beschäftigt. Dabei gibt es ja riesige Preisunterschiede, und Ryzen9 und Ryzen7 sagen ja nicht wirklich aus, was da für ein Prozessor drinnen steckt. Anforderung war geringer Stromverbrauch im Idle (Rechnerlein läuft 24/7), #Proxmox mit genügend Reserven für ein paar #Linux VMs und eventuell eine Win #VM. Geworden ist es jetzt ein 3 Jahre alter Prozessor, weil alles andere war unbezahlbar und hatte wenn dann nur Vorteile in der NPU und so KI Gedöns. Vor zehn Jahren hätte glaube ich niemand einen so alten Prozessor gekauft. Geht da wirklich in der normalen CPU nix mehr vorwärts? Here's some #vintage #tech for you. This is the Data General Nova 2. These 16-bit #minicomputers were very popular in the 1970s. Coincidentally this #photo was taken in the office of my last job, the #basement of a #government #research facility. I didn't take the photo but the link to the post is below.

I spent just over two years here managing #Linux and #Solaris servers. My #cubicle was just around the corner from these #machines, below flickering fluorescent lights. Exactly what you'd expect from working in the basement of a government building.

While these systems haven't been in use for decades and should have been in a museum, they were still on the books and inventoried annually. 🤦‍♂️

@oxy I enjoyed a killing on Kubuntu 26.04 a day or so ago.

IIRC free memory and swap were nearly exhausted (unrelated to ARC) due to VirtualBox throwing a wobbly with a FreeBSD guest, following a disrupted connection to an old mobile hard disk drive on USB, which I use (with OpenZFS) to store the virtual hard disks for many of my test machines.

I feared that Firefox would be killed.

Happily: Linux made VirtualBox, which was not responding, the victim.

Je continue à tester des solutions pour accéder à ma bibliothèque musicale, 300 Go stockés sur un nuage chez #Infomaniak, auxquels j'accède via le protocole WebDAV depuis mon bureau #Gnome.

Le serveur Navidrome est une chouette solution : lancé comme un service via systemd, il gère bien l'importante collection de fichiers MP3/FLAC. J'y accède via une page web ou au travers de différents clients, en mode graphique ou via un terminal.

✍️ I think this is a very reasonable approach to LLM-gen-AI (hereafter AI) and floss space. Despite the fear mongering, AI is simply a tool. As with any statistical software, the human has to be the final arbiter of the content - not the tool itself. The free form input and output increases the concern over confirmation bias but it does not negate the value of the tool if used properly.

💡The main goal - imho - and one which we see this piece calling for in #12 ... is the rapid and immediate forking/development of floss-only AI tooling. Some do already exist, but they are crude in comparison. As with any software, the four software freedoms are paramount for ensuring the safety, equity, and accessibility of the tooling. This is essential and I've already started investing so as to be able to self-host my own generative AI.

🔨 In short, if these two criteria are met - namely, the human is the final arbiter of the content and the underlying models/tooling are floss, then I think arguments against AI-usage crumble. Sure, concerns over reliance on proprietary AI, governmental and/or big money influence, those all matter ... and floss and the four freedoms protect us from these valid concerns. AI is just the latest software - it's not special.

⚡️ This set of recommendations is game-changing. I think the next task for the Conservancy to consider is the legal / copyright side of the matter. A member of our small group brought this up and I share that same concern. As more litigation and legal precedent emerges, it will be interesting to see how this guidance evolves. In particular, I am referring to the US-side of legality re: https://www.copyright.gov/ai/ - I think the next wisest task for the Conservancy to take on is licensing + AI.

I've started investigating #FreeBSD at (maybe) since 2.1.6 in conjunction with several other OS'es including #BeOS, #WinNT4, #超漢字(kinda proprietary package of #BTRON with huge font set) with several #Linux distros (Yggdrasil, Vine and Turbo as far as I can recall now). At the era, my personal daily driver was #OS/2.

After IBM discontinued OS/2 and the successor, eComStation, didn't actually released Japanese edition (ordered one and obtained English version for temporary use until it's ready, but never happened), I needed to decide which OS to make my NeXT^H^H^H^Hnext daily driver, and switched to FreeBSD, which seemed to be most familiar with me.

I've used several GPUs for XFree86 (and Xorg after it landed) on FreeBSD.
At first, VGA/SVGA driver was too slow, so I purchased a license of AcceleratedX to use S3 GPUs (and then, Power9000, Matrox MGA,...) and some ATIs(!).
When I've switched my daily driver hardware to notebooks, driver for new GPUs were mostly unavailable after AcceleratedX has gone.

But fortunately, found that NVIDIA is providing FreeBSD version of drivers for their cutting edge GPUs and ports were already available. After that, I choose PCs having NVIDIA GPUs everytime I need to purchase one.

I was happy for a while, but introduction of iGPUs caused headaches. There were too many screams that graphics/drm-*-kmod at their early phase was quite unstable and often broken. So I've always been looking for notebooks that can disable iGPU via BIOS / UEFI, but it became harder and harder.
Now I'm using Minisforum MS-01 that allows installing half size, half height PCIeX16 card which doesn't require additional power supply with RTX A400.

And noticed that I'm now one of the maintainers for #NVIDIA driver #ports on FreeBSD.

Today, latest Production Branch of NVIDIA GPU drivers 595.84 landed onto ports tree at commit ec6b356f6328.

After Bluesky, Threads, and so on, the whole #WSocial thing is another reminder that it was never about the #Fediverse being "too complicated" or "just for nerds".

A bafflingly large amount of people genuinely only act on a gut feeling telling them that only commercial products with fancy marketing owned by a for-profit corporation can be trustworthy, 'official' and 'legal', for the lack of a better word.

If something is a commercial offering by a competent-looking, rich family man in a suit, it's clearly an official, legal, trustworthy product. You can be proud of using such a fancy-looking service.

When they see a community-run open-source project or a grassroots initiative, their first instinct is that it must be shady, illegal, complicated, broken or predatory in some way. It's probably some aftermarket grey area bootleg made by weird tech nerds, political groups with an ulterior motive, conspiracy theorists or some naive teenage hackers. They'd also be embarrassed for using it in front of their peers and neighbours; who uses some free back-alley software, are you poor or something?

The same people are the reason why Google is using the word 'sideloading', why scammers love wearing fancy suits, why people suddenly act childishly helpless in front of LibreOffice, or why DIY HRT is so demonised.

They trust any kind of 'official approval' over their own senses. If someone does something that isn't 'approved', they're a bad person or clearly endangering themselves and others. No idea why exactly, but psh, it must be wrong somehow, or everyone would do it, right?

If people on the Fediverse understood that the whole "it's all so complicated and clunky" thing is just a thinly veiled excuse for a general disdain for non-commercial software, we could finally stop making all our software imitate their corporate equivalents in a futile attempt to appease people who never gave us a chance in the first place.

You'll never convince them to treat it in good faith no matter how much effort or money you put into UX or 'ease of use'. All you're doing is making the software worse, e. g. through things like dot-social, verified accounts or begging brands, corporations and politicians to join and give your product some kind of 'official' validation.

I want to store them in an array. The problem I'm running in to is the command line below doesn't store them in the variable, lwf

lwf=$(ps ax | grep librewolf | grep -v grep | awk '{print $1}')

When I then attempt to list the array elements with
printf "${#lwf[@]}\n"

The output is only this digit: 1
Which is not the first pid in the list above. The goal is to define the array in a #ShellScript. Thoughts? Suggestions?

The plot thickens: This is the average CPU frequency as reported by Prometheus node exporter and calculated by Prometheus. The CPU is getting throttled down while doing this process, all the way down to 800MHz from the usual 3.5GHz. Could it be getting throttled for temperature? Unluckily I have an issue with the sensors, so I don't have graphs of those :(

I have 8 cores* and a CPU bound threaded process, so I run 8 threads. But this process talks to a PostgreSQL that runs on the same machine (can't beat that bandwidth), so the load usually goes to 10-15, CPU pressure 20-40%. Of course the CPU is saturated, which is what I want, but I wonder if having "too many" threads waiting for CPU is "more bad" than having less. Could there be an advantage of running with one less thread?

Found some time to shake the cobwebs off the brane pan with respect to compiling software from source. A couple days ago I was asking about getting an Alpine package for the Klassy theme set for Plasma.

I'm not a developer so it's not my comfort zone really.

I remembered that Alpine generally has the same/similar package naming convention as Arch so I used that example on the Klassy github page as a basis to install all the dependencies and compile. It compiles, super cleanly <kleanly?> too.

But, I can't select it in the Colours & Themes > Global Theme > Application Style picker. It appears with a placeholder bitmap but doesn't allow it to be selected.

Tried logout and reboot for last grasp at straws but no luck. Bummer.

Something else to dig into I guess. The install ran clean so there must be some little subtlety missing when files are copied to their destinations or a config is not updated or something.

Anyone have some hints?

I'm running linux mint on several lenovo laptops and have the same problem with all of them.

After the machine has been running for a while the active window's contents turns black for a few seconds then returns, this will continue untill I do a ctrl-alt-backspace to reset the session.

I'm running nvidia drivers on two of the devices, all 3 devices do this.

I'm not sure where to look for what's happening much less why.

For #FreeBSD (on that same box), I found a shell script that uses sysctl to get the ACPI name for the battery, and runs acpi_call from ports to set the thresholds, which survives a reboot.
On #OpenBSD, I believe you set the thresholds directly through sysctl.
On #Linux, you set it with something like echo 80 > /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_stop_threshold

So simpel, so einfach, geht auch ohne Parameter(*) hervorragend und ist ein echter komfort, wenn man z.b. einen download beobachten will, oder Datei kopieren etc.

Beispiel "watch du . -sh" und ich sehe wie das verzeichnis beim kopieren langsam volläuft

*) Wie immer kann man einen Arsch voll Parameter dran hängen, aber nicht notwendig für sinnvolle ausgaben

Question for Linux / Apple fans:

I'm considering buying an Apple Neo, to dual boot Linux Mint #Debian Edition on it.

Are there any specific concerns with using #Apple Silicon? Am I restricted in the #Linux distros and available packages?

I like the price point of the Apple Neo, and the fact that it comes loaded with creative tools, which I use heavily. For example, I have yet to find a #videoEditing tool for Linux, comparable to #iMovie. Also, Apple devices are elegant in #design and rugged in construction.

Am I better off buying a generic laptop instead? Recommendations are welcome!

Linux folks, question:

I setup a common directory under `/home` (`/home/common`) with `root:common` ownership and 775 permissions. I'd like the group to be set automatically to `common` whether I write the file or someone else does, so I think using `chmod -R 2775` would achieve that. Is there a way I can similarly automatically set the ownership to `root`? Or do I manually have to do that each time I add new files/directories?

Seems the tags were an accident and were already removed in Linus' repo (but they might have ended up in your local mirror if you are unlucky; using the "--prune-tags" option of git fetch might be what you want then, but be careful, it might remove tags you care about).
