Habe bei @gnulinux Artikel zu novelWriter geschrieben (kostenlos, FOSS, Linux/Win/MacOS):
"Auf den Spuren des Groschenromans"
https://gnulinux.ch/auf-den-spuren-des-groschenromans-novelwriter
My tiny brain has yet to have been convinced that AI hype is a good thing for the environment, projects it gets foisted upon, creativity, or the human psyche.
I've done extensive research; it's so horrific that if crying about it would revert things I would have cried the Amazone river full.
LLMs as companions are bad news for the human Psyche. I have contact with a few victims of these LLMs who would rather {talk to} send strings to a mathematical model then speak to a real person. Serious pshychiatirc intervention is needed
I am going to find out also why massive projects, massive open source projects seem not to care about:
... for nomal prices, because those critical components have been hijacked by data center underlords who can't even get enough permissions to build all those projects in reality
Part of it we all know, it's the LLM bubble, just like the house bubble in the USA some decades ago. Other part is that those underlords dont want us to owe our hardware anymore, so they can tighten their fascistic lock on the computing population.
Look how they want to force even open source OS to age gate the systems so they can get real ID globally
And I enjoy doing things the hard way
I've always done my projects from the bottom up, Linux when many sources needed to be crosscompiled in the alpha days from DOS, which was fun but tedious.
All current BSD flavours can be done that way too, if you still chose to do so, IIRC
Thank you for your enlightning response

Good to know: Ubuntu studio comes with RaySession, a software that allows to save a soft·hard·ware / midi / anything… patch and load it when you want to find back a precise configuration for your live. It also solves lots of trouble if you work with a web browser as a source, as it autoconnects audio contexts to your preferred destination. Thanks to @QuentinJuhel for finding that.

T14 Gen2 (Tiger Lake):
I always ask similar questions like the following,
There are a lot of folk who are pissed off at Linus Torvalds, for allowing some of his maintainers to use large language models to assist in finding bugs.
The Head Programmer of the fantastic and Beautiful curl also uses a large language model in some form, to hunt for bugs, because both he and Greg from the Linux kernel, saw that the LLM used on GitHub is now suddenly much better at finding those pesky bugs.
Mind you, the only LLM I like is the one that runs locally on my low powered Android phone. That's a micro LLM

My son has Windows 10 on his gaming rig and refuses to go to Windows 11. He wants me to help him get up to speed with Linux on this machine.
He's "just a user" in every stereotypical sense of the computer term so needs help for now. He's away from home for work for five days of the week so I'm hoping I can off-load a lot of the fiddly setup stuff for him.
I'm trying out CachyOS in a VM. The installer looks pretty slick.
I noticed it offers btrfs by default [ ☹️ ] but has zfs as an option [ 😍 ] so let's try that to start. Choosing KDE desktop.
In spite of being a fairly thick 2.8GB install ISO it still seems to download a lot over the wire at install time. Kinda sux on my small, metered, Internet connection.
Would've thought more would be on the media, or get to a first boot scenario before downloading a lot of files. What if install fails after downloading all that stuff over a metered connection?
Installer sits at 19% for a very long time with nothing indicating activity. Looking at the router is showing the traffic.
I'm hoping the rolling release nature of the distro is more "curated" than vanilla Arch.

Notes on #KDE
On my ThinkPad T470s laptop with KDE on Artix Linux, ‘tap to click’ feature was not working on the touchpad. I had to ‘press to click’, which was fine for a while, but I missed just being able to use a light tap on the touchpad to ‘click’.
Looked in KDE settings for touchpad and ‘tap to click’ was already selected, but not actually working.
To get it to work, I had to edit this file:
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf
and add the line:
Option "Tapping" "True"
in the input class section for my touchpad.
Logged out and then back in again. Now ‘tap to click’ works.

Linus today on LKML[1]: """Apparently nobody actually runs #linux-next. I knew it didn't get a lot of testing, but apparently it's more like "no testing at all" than "not a lot"."""
Wondering if the problem he and Alexei ran into only triggers in some environments – then the situation might not be as bad as Linus makes it sound.
But at the same time he has a point. One of the reasons why I stay away from using -next regularly: it includes the mm-unstable/mm-nonmm-unstable branches. I often wonder if that is actually violating the rules for -next inclusion, but I'm not sure[2].
[1] https://lore.kernel.org/all/CAHk-=wipMj+0_Wr+LTqYcZ2jzpxTDSMa9Y2HsMp0V22C6jx0hQ@mail.gmail.com/
[2] can't remember where they are written down, but I think it was round about "only push code to -next that you'd send to Linus for mainline inclusion tomorrow it he'd suddenly open the merge window" -- but I might be mistaken…

I may regret this. You may regret this.
I've just put out a Linux forensics scenario for you all to play around with. There's a contest. You r submissions are due by 2026-04-15 23:59 UTC.
On Friday I announced a DFIR challenge around a recently drafted Linux forensics scenario. This garnered a lot of interest and even a couple of submissions over the weekend.
After chatting with one potential entrant, I realized to my horror that I had uploaded an incorrect version of the scenario data. I replaced the incorrect version Sunday evening and updated the original blog post. But if you grabbed the scenario data before the change, you don't have everything I intended you to have.
The revised version contains a full memory dump from the system. And note that while the general outline of the scenario remains unchanged, the revised version will have different timestamps for some of the activity.
So grab the revised version and have at it! Thanks for your patience and I hope you enjoy working on it!

I've been running two degraded ZFS arrays for the last few weeks (Debian host).
Yeah, I know. Whatevs.
One of the pools was basically "scratch" backup space and one of the spindles died (breaking the utility of the mirror). Pulled the drive, wiped the remaining, put back in service with minimum fuss as a single drive. I'll throw another spindle at it when drive prices drop again.
The other array had the SSD cache die and it's been chugging along fine ever since. Not a big deal, but from a "experience" point of view it "feels slow" like a working md array.
New SSD arrived in the mail so that'll get sorted sometime today/tomorrow.
So, what's this post about?
Linux peeps, if you are thinking about md arrays, just stop, take the time, and throw 'yer leg over the zfs horse. It's worth it.

Why is ausearch broken? This can't just be me. Trying to ausearch using --checkpoint will "randomly" return err 12 even though the audit file is just chugging along in the background with nothing affecting it whatsoever (no rotation, no other process writing in it etc).

The batteries are a pain in the T470s, so I do not recommend it unless you are willing to live with that issue. The regular T470 is a much better laptop as far as the batteries and memory upgrades go.

Something that I'd love to be able to do, but haven't figured out how, yet:
You can run somecommand 2>&1 > log.txt to get STDOUT and STDERR together, but you won't know which is which.
You can run somecommand 2>err.txt >log.txt to get STDOUT and STDERR separate, but you won't know the timing, or which error messages happened between which STDOUT messages.
I'd like to figure out some way to combine both, so you end up with a file like this:
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
2: this was a STDERR message
2: this was a STDERR message
1: this was a STDOUT message
2: this was a STDERR message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
1: this was a STDOUT message
2: this was a STDERR message
2: this was a STDERR message

I recently switched to #Linux Mint. I mean, the reasons are obvious so I will save that for a different time. What really struck me was just how easy it was to actually do it. Problems were minor and mainly due to the fact that I have an Nvidia card in my laptop.
Aside from that, I was up and running quickly. Apps I wanted, (including Steam,) were easy to find and install. There were a couple apps that I needed to find replacements for, like Notepad++.
Yesterday, I deleted my #Windows drive.

My ThinkPad T14s shipped with an Intel XMM7560 LTE modem locked behind a Lenovo unlock blob. I replaced it with a ~100-line bash script that does the exact same handshake - and explains, in plain shell, what the "unlock" really is: a SHA-256 over a 4-byte constant. No magic, no blob.

@ethauvin I have some problems with the last of them, at least when it comes to the #Linux #kernel: https://hachyderm.io/@kernellogger/116374083334503805
Wondering if there are other projects out there where it might be similar for the same or other reasons…
I liked "The #Git Commands I Run Before Reading Any Code" post[1], but during the part that contains "Reverts every couple of weeks means the team doesn’t trust its deploy process. They’re evidence of a deeper issue: […]" something in me yelled: "This is more nuanced, and people will be drawing the wrong conclusions if they believe this blindly".
Because for the #Linux #kernel reverts often are a good thing for two entangled reasons:

The Discover app looks quite promising. However, when I click to install an app from the apps.kde.org website, it opens the Discover app but I get this error:
"could not open appstream://org.kde.discover.desktop because it was not found in any available software repositories"
I am not sure how to add the KDE apps website to the Discover repositories.
Is this a common error? Or do you think it is Debian or Devuan specific error? I haven't yet tried on my Artix Linux installation, as that is currently in a different location.

"How it all began"
I saw an ad for this CD set at a very low price in a computer magazine. I decided to give it a try, enticed by the low cost and this 'alternative solution to Windows', and in late 1996 I ordered this set.
When it arrived, I was fascinated (having never used a Unix or Unix-like system before) but a bit daunted by the lack of support for the main applications I knew. A few months later, though, I decided to give it another go and from that point, I never looked back. Whether it was Linux, one of the BSDs, or something similar (but Unix or Unix-like), I was not going back to systems like Windows.
My #ThrowbackThursday today is probably one of the most significant in my computing life.

* No "deploy process" can prevent all bugs, so some will only be found in the wild. This, sadly, is especially true for the #LinuxKernel, as its mostly drivers which are impossible to test properly in a deploy process; the hardware they support furthermore is messy and full of hidden bugs innocent changes can suddenly expose.

Linux tip: Use the “setgid” mode bit on shared directories: “chmod g+s /shared/project”. New files will inherit group ownership, which prevents permission chaos between users.

Separate from, but related to, my previous question ...
My work machine boots into Ubuntu. I'm trying to get to the BIOS to ask it to try first booting from the USB, but I can't work out how to get to the BIOS.
I've tried various keys while powering on ... ESC, F1, F2, DEL ...
What do you need to know to help me work it out?
I'm going to bed now, but I'll be back in about 9 hours. Let me know how stupid I've been, and what I should be doing.
Or alternatively, let me know what info you need to be able to help me.
Thanks in advance ... and good night.

wayback is a stub Wayland compositor that hosts a rootful Xwayland server, letting you run your full X11 setup unchanged on top of Wayland. Built from source, wrote a small launch script and dwm came up fine with st.
Still experimental and needs some tweaking but the core concept works — keep your dwm, st and all your suckless tools, just drop Xorg underneath.

TLS certificates and ingress-routing is handled fully automatically by Traefik and labels, attached to the containers.
Having everything containerized, makes it really easy to clean up 🙂 There's some applications, that I don't even use anymore. Time to clean up.
Then I'll continue, replacing the old Authentik installation with Keycloak for my OIDC applications (Forgejo, Wallos etc.)
