Dear #Linux people:
A friend with a flaky internet wants to migrate to Linux. They can't download the ISOs with just the browser. Remote help is hard too. They tried BT, but the binary they tried didn't work.
I'm looking for a no-thrills just-works install-less download-EXE-and-run download manager for #Windows that works on any ~current windows version (say, XP onwards? :). This last requirement is because I plan to suggest the same tool to other people who wants to migrate.
Boosts welcome.

There is one question I need answered before I can really explore that. How TF do I connect to wifi in #Linux without a GUI? I'm tentatively planning to install arch on it without a GUI.
Is anyone else finding that their network connections are VERY slow this week? I'm trying to decide whether the slowness and browser timeouts are still the aftermath of the big outage (so likely to improve) or an effect of my awful internet connection (so I need to yell at someone at my ISP.
DNS is probably involved, since the worst problems seem to happen when I try to follow links to servers I'm not currently accessing.

RHEL afficionados, help. Why does my RDP session to RHEL9 (xrdp) under Hyper-V suck compared to using RDP towards RHEL8 (xrdp) under the very same Hyper-V?
By "suck" I mean that in RHEL9 there are very obvious compression artifacts that don't clear up, like if a "final draw" action is never taken. In comparison, all is just awesome and wonderful in RHEL8.
I see the kernel module change from hyperv_fb to hyperv_drmdrmfb but "everyone" says it makes things faster and smoother, and here I am not able to see the difference between certain characters in the terminal sometimes.
Sure, disabling bulk compression in xrdp.ini will remove the artifacts but makes everything dead slow, and it's not needed in the RHEL8 VM so .. you know. wat givs.

It's good to have backups, but it's an even better feeling when you know, they work, restore correctly and the procedure has been tested.

Is #Thunderbird really the only standalone #Linux desktop calendar app that can just subscribe to #CalDAV calendars? 🤨
#GnomeCalendar needs a ton of dependencies and #GNOME stuff running.
#KOrganizer the same for #KDE.
#Evolution apparently just hooks into GNOME online accounts.
There are some terminal calendar apps, but yeah... If one has #vim keybindings and is configurable via config files, I am open to suggestions.
Use `set -euo pipefail` for more robust bash/zsh scripts. Exit on errors (-e), treat undefined variables as errors (-u), catch pipe failures (-o pipefail).

@jonnyevans The choice between #Windows11 and #MacOS is a false dichotomy.
There are plenty of other OSes available. Both a whole collection of #Linux distributions as well as the #BSD family of OSes. Many of which, for years, are drop in replacements for Windows and even MacOS.
The genuine lack of #Security and #privacy on both Windows and MacOS need to be taken seriously.
Welp... in researching & testing my way towards #Linux, one of the first things I've discovered is that "[Thing] is available for Linux" is nonsense.
There's no such thing as "Available for Linux".
There's "Available for some Linux'es & if you're lucky & willing to work hard for it, yours may be one of them".
Not sure I'm complaining, exactly; I understand why this is the case - but it sure as shit doesn't make the decision to actually switch any easier...

https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/20251020020749.5522-1-linkinjeon@kernel.org/
""Currently, ntfs support in Linux was the long-neglected NTFS Classic (read-only), which has been removed from the Linux kernel, leaving the poorly maintained ntfs3. ntfs3 still has many problems and is poorly maintained, so users and distributions are still using the old legacy ntfs-3g.
What is ntfsplus?
The remade ntfs called ntfsplus is an implementation that supports write and the essential requirements(iomap, no buffer-head, utilities, xfstests test result) based on read-only classic NTFS. The old read-only ntfs code is much cleaner, with extensive comments, offers readability that makes understanding NTFS easier. This is why ntfsplus was developed on old read-only NTFS base. The target is to provide current trends(iomap, no buffer head, folio), enhanced performance, stable maintenance, utility support including fsck.""

I recently learned that there's a mount option on #Linux called "private". This is useful for bind mounts, such as when creating a chroot, because private stops all sub-mounts within a mounted directory from being visible in the other mount location.
For example, in my case my storage array is mounted at /mnt/storage. I created a chroot in /mnt/chroot and just remount my whole root directory there. Without "private", my storage then also becomes visible at /mnt/chroot/mnt/storage.

Any recommendations for a *local* OCR which runs on #Linux
I've been using #OpenBSD lately thanks to @OpenBSDAms and their wonderful service.
I feel like I have become too lax in my use of #Linux (mostly Debian) over the years and found myself interested in the relative Zen-like discipline of using OpenBSD to accomplish tasks, so I forced myself to do so.
I appreciate the fact that I can accomplish any major or minor job with OpenBSD, sometimes the hard way but always the correct way.
I know this sounds silly, but maybe I'm just getting older.

Heads up if you're running #Debian #Forky (a.k.a. Debian Testing) and you have a lot of RAM. The new user-space OOM manager systemd-oomd doesn't treat kernel cache memory as available when calculating memory usage. That means it decides you're running out of RAM when you actually aren't and kills processes when it shouldn't.
Ref: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1118191
You might want to uninstall it until this is fixed, or mask systemd-oomd.{service,socket} and reboot to disable it.
#DebianForky #Linux #systemd
But the logic doesn't add up.
They correctly identify "Android" as a restrictive system and seek freedom elsewhere. They understand that "Android" and "Linux" are not the same thing, because they are not, in this case, asking for "Android phones with more freedom," but specifically for "Linux phones".
Yet, when it comes to the desktop, this same clarity vanishes. If a "Linux phone" is different from an "Android phone," even though both use Linux, the kernel, then why is a "Linux desktop" not recognized as being, in its most common form, actually a GNU desktop?
The very inconsistency in their naming proves the point: the system is more than its kernel. When they want freedom, they look for a different system, whatever the kernel is, even when they don't know what a kernel is—and that's perfectly fine. They want something with freedom more like they already have on the desktop, which, in its classic free form, is GNU. This is how we can easily distinguish them with less confusing terms.

I'm not sure if even the @fsf@hostux.social would fully endorse my view, but I find their logic compelling. Here is the central question: unless you are running a pure kernel like #Linux by itself (a project focused on a #kernel, hosted at kernel.org), then calling the entire system "Linux" isn't a meaningful name for a complete, usable #OS. I recognize what people usually refer to as "Linux" is, in fact, a system designed to be #GNU.
To illustrate: if we apply the logic of naming the whole system after its kernel, then why do we call it "Android" and not just "Linux"? After all, #Android uses Linux too, yet we correctly recognize it as a distinct system.
So why is GNU so often forgotten and replaced by "Linux" when talking about personal or server computers? (Only in this context?) I believe this isn't accidental—it often overlooks the deeper vision of a project designed from the start to ensure software freedom for its users.
When we are running only the kernel (whatever the purpose may be), then by all means, let's call the OS "Linux." But when it's part of a larger, distinct system—like the GNU OS—then it should be recognized as such.
I'd like to add a final thought: I know it can sometimes be annoying to insist on this when it seems that everyone understands what "Linux" means, even if we disagree with the term. But this is part of the advocacy—sometimes it involves emphasizing a technicality that may even be controversial, in order to reinforce public awareness of GNU and the philosophy of free software.
A brief debate like this one, right here, may be enough for someone to realize what GNU is, which is already a desired outcome. Who knows, it might even spark a flame of curiosity, leading them to research this fascinating topic further.

Just over 4 years ago one of my granddaughters gave me her old HP Windows 10 laptop that wouldn't hold a charge - partly because she'd bent the power cable which I much later discovered had damaged the power jack.
Three years ago I replaced the battery, and just got on with the power lead only working at certain angles.
A few months ago I got it to triple boot with #Linux Mint and Bohdi.
This morning I've replaced the power jack.
It's now a perfectly good Linux machine.
So - don't throw that old laptop away there's always someone who can fettle it into a 'like new' laptop for not too much £££.
If I can do it then I'm pretty sure most of you can - or you'll know someone who can!

#Windows 10 stirbt.

It does mention previous attempts at making a FOSS mobile environment practical for users, but not much came of it, save maybe for the mobile #Linux OSes and #Android derivatives that are available now. Morning tests...
The story behind: a client is considering moving all the new mini PCs in their office to Linux (no BSD is compatible at the moment), since they mainly use web apps and LibreOffice. This client once told me they loved Transport Tycoon, back in the days, so I’m preparing an openSUSE Leap image. I’m sure they’ll be fascinated by this screenshot and the demo installation.
Ok, so I was looking for a good FOSS desktop email client for my GPD MicroPC 2 running CachyOS.
I wanted something lighter than Thunderbird, and as I’m running KDE Plasma 6 I choose KMail.
WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?
After fiddling for 15 min I was still unable to connect to my IMAP server. It’s 2025 guys, any email client I cannot setup in less than a minute is dead and should not exists.
I’m not writing this because I feel entitled or important or because my time is so precious. I’m writing this because I’m a senior BSD/Linux sysadmin, with +20 years in the field of email servers / email admin & support. I’m very aware of «what’s going on» under the hood and still, I was unable to make it work. I can literally use openssl s_client to connect to my server, where KMail fails hard.
Eventually I’ve installed Thunderbird, in less than 60 sec I got mail synching. The longest step was to retrieve IMAP password from Bitwarden.

Regardless of the degrees to which planned obsolescence is believable: the France Inter podcast and article by Xavier Demagny are neat.

This is a great and common question:
Which Linux should I pick?
Short answer is there are several options and you can't really go wrong. Big thing is if you don't like one you can always change to another one.
Generally I recommend four distros for those migrating over from Windows.
1) Zorin OS: https://zorin.com/os/
- Designed specifically for people used to Windows or Macs and want to transition to Linux. Very user friendly. Desktop environment made to look like Windows 10, 11, or Mac.
2) Linux Mint: https://www.linuxmint.com/
- A very popular variant with a desktop that reminds me of Windows 7. Up to date with a great community.
3) ElementaryOS: https://elementary.io/
- Very streamlined and simple interface. Very easy to use. Desktop reminds me of classic Macs.
4) Ubuntu: https://ubuntu.com/
- Desktop environments vary, but Gnome is the default one. This one is more "Linux" than others and breaks away from trying to emulate Windows or Mac. It has a LOT of support and community and if you ever need anything, there's a lot of help out there for you.
There are of course others and once you get into the environment, you might pivot and move to them. But you can't go wrong with the ones above.

Today #microsoft is pushing for #windows11. I took the opportunity in my office and among my students to announce that I can be reached out for installing #linux on old pc, and even do it only on an external hard drive to not put their data at risk and allow them to keep access to their windows.
It works! I got one colleague reaching me (out of 20) and two students in a classroom of 25, I am not in computer science field. We can estimate that ~5% of average people may be taking the next step now, they just need to know that there is someone around to help them.

I'm sure this will be fun for the next person to grok what cursed thing I've done.
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda 3.5T 5.8M 3.5T 1% /data
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINTS
sda 8:0 0 1.7T 0 disk /data
sdb 8:16 0 1.7T 0 disk
Even more fun - `lsof /dev/sdb` returns nothing and doesn't show up as mounted with `mount`.
I like finding out stuff can be less complicated than how I used to do it. Like going from team bridging to bridging over a bond to realizing that all I actually needed was to setup vlan connections directly off the bond to accomplish what I needed to do, so it was like a total of 4 nmcli commands to setup an 802.ad bond and a vlan tagged con.
Shout out to @paradoxguitarist for keeping me fresh.

My friends, Linux's vm.swappiness is a tuning knob to solve the kernel's question: if there is memory pressure should pages be freed by writing to the filesystem or by writing to swap.
So the tuning knob is really determined by the relative performance between the filesystem disk and the swap disk, and between the sequential I/O of the filesystem disk and the more random I/O of paging to swap.
If the filesystem and swap are on the same mechanical hard disk, then leave vm.swappiness at 60. That's a fair stab at the cost of swap's more random I/O over the filesystem's more sequential I/O.
If the filesystem and swap are on the same solid state drive, then set vm.swappiness to 100. On that type of storage sequential I/O and random I/O have the same cost.
I'd strongly suggest some swap. There's no point keeping daemon initialisation data structures in RAM when that RAM could be used to cache more disk I/O. If the filesystem is dynamically resizable (eg, ext4) then it may as well be a partition of a few GB rather than a file. Use 1MB or even 4MB boundaries for these partitions, so the partition edges line up with the interior arrangements within SSDs.
The atop tool shows swap usage by each process. Press M (sort by memory) and m (show memory stats) and look at the SWAPSZ column. On my machine with 8GB of RAM there's a lot of web processes paged out, resulting in about 1.1GB of swap used. That's a worthwhile win, those browser tabs can page back in when they are selected.

Le journaliste parle-t-il du passage à #Linux ?
Non !

Does #Microsoft bandwidth limit #OneDrive? #Windows10 is done so I'm migrating my mom to #Debian with KDE. I always assumed that OneDrive being unbearably slow on her system was just Windows being generally much slower on the system than #Linux, but now on Debian I'm using the OneDrive package with a GUI front-end, and it's also being "really" slow. I mean, kB/s slow. 1/

Very happy that the #iwlwifi #Linux kernel bug that caused hard freezes on my #Fedora 42 laptop has finally been resolved with kernel 6.16.10. After updating the Fedora laptop today, everything was stable once again.

Been a long time since I've had that kind of experience on Fedora.
Switching to Linux is less about technical hurdles and more about adjusting your mindset. Here's why.
https://linuxiac.com/the-only-thing-stopping-you-from-switching-to-linux-is-your-mindset/
2/ Reminder, it's the new "normal" since two or three releases that a #LinuxKernel series becomes EOL about 11 or 12 weeks after the mainline version it's based on was released (#kernel 6.16 in this case).
IOW: When the merge window for the next-but-one mainline successor ends, which is when it's first pre-release is released (e.g. #Linux 6.18-rc1 in this case, which should be out in a few hours).
A bunch of new stable and longterm #LinuxKernel are out. Among them is #Linux 6.16.12, which "is the LAST 6.16.y #kernel release, this branch is now end-of-life. Please move to the 6.17.y branch at this point in time."

« LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) 7 Is Now Available for Download »
› https://9to5linux.com/lmde-linux-mint-debian-edition-7-is-now-available-for-download
@Enalys TLDR: I switched from #Windows to #Linux a looong time ago, because Linux terminal, and all these commands and text configuration files looks cool and like in a hacker movies from198x-199x.
Then, few years ago I switched from #Linux to #FreeBSD because "everyone is conservative about what he knows best" (Robert Conquest) — I just wanted to continue using simple system, like my first Linux distro — #Slackware (MOPSLinux)
I've been helping tutor a friend who is taking a Linux college course, and as someone who is self-taught my mind is blown at how they teach it (at least in this one specific class).
What is the point of throwing 100s of new commands at people who have never used a terminal before, with no explanation as to what they are doing? People actually learn this way?
All my #Linux peeps. I can't choose a distro. HELP!!
This is what I need:
-Good for use as a daily driver.
-Latest AMD hardware support.
-Minimal command line hacking.
-KDE.
-Fast and stable.
-Occasional gaming - Steam/Proton.
-Easily repaired if I bork it.
-Excellent Windows app support (Wine).
-Packages readily available without compiling.
Remember, I'm a Win10 girl. Maybe 20 years ago it was fun for me to hack things in CUI, but not any more. I just want to get work done now.

I started regularly donating about a year ago. I am now supporting 8 different projects with 20,77€ per month, and it didn't hurt at all.
Why pay for something free? Because free software only exists because other people already paid for it. Someone has to do it. It's time to do your part!
If you can afford a subscription service, then you probably can afford a little donation, too. Start with 0.1% of your income.

So my plea to users is:
I think as Linux has gained popularity as desktop system, these problems are popping up more and many of them are just being discovered. So it's gonna take more time to resolve these, especially the edge cases.
It's totally fine to try again later. I did that too. But in my case it was using outdated distribution. Due to the openness we have a lot of these little gotchas too, which is annoying IMO. But having choices is good too.
It's totally fair to have problems with Linux systems. There is no perfect computer stuff. And the frustrations it bring are totally valid feelings. Just yesterday I had trouble streaming a game over Discord screensharing, sound didn't work when using browser, and the actual client just crashes. (Granted this is Discords fault!)
We can't solve everything immediately, a lot of us are volunteers with limited time and resources, and some problems are very edge-case.. But trust me, people try their best.
Still, I try to approach these problems people have with empathy and try my best to help, even if the frustrations are scary to read.
For users, I hope you can meet us devs in the middle: We are not a big evil corporation that doesn't listen. We're just bunch of passionate nerds.
Idee?
For 10 years now, people from the Linux side tell me systemd is so much easier and "Unit-Files" are so much cleaner and better than init-scripts ...
Well, I still don't get it. A well implemented init-system like that of FreeBSD is:
- Clean
- Flexible
- Way more lightweight
- Works with just shell code
I have written a rc.d init-script for zigbee2mqtt today and honestly? It's not going to be shorter than that. Would chose that instead of systemd! ANY TIME! K.I.S.S.
10 years in and I still don't see a real advantage of monolithic-binary init-systems with static configuration files.

At #work today I had an unexpectedly pleasant experience. With #kubernetes of all things.
I'm playing around with a sandpit #RKE2 cluster that I'm using to test how things are going to work when we need to deploy an actual working environment, and the matter of persistent storage came up.
A bit of poking around and I discovered #Longhorn. The requirements were trivial - all the required software was already present, just one service needed to be started. And so I installed it via #helm with just a handful of lines in the config.
And it just works. A fully distributed, clustered, read-write-many capable storage subsystem for Kubernetes, and it took me less than the time it is taking to write this to get it up and running.
I fired up a deployment that required multiple RWM PV's and ... it all just worked. I could even go into a management panel and see how the shards were distributed, and how busy everything was.
For a back-end all it needed was a filesystem on each node of the cluster, and even that could be managed with #LVM so it could be expanded at need.
Compared to the old in-tree VMWare CSI operator, this is a dream come true.
It's been a while ... #FollowFriday #FF

Dear #foss , #OpenSource , and #linux folks...
Can we please STOP trying to self implode the few good things we have in this world?
The world is currently on fire, the US is devolving into Facism, big tech is getting even more powerful... FOSS is about the last good thing in this world.
And yet, we're attacking #nixos and #framework because we disagree with people they're 2-3 degrees associated with.
I'm not saying we can't move things in a good direction.. but self imploding helps nobody

A quelle échéance ?
