Pro-Tipp: Mit `/` könnt ihr in der man-page suchen wie in vim. Und mit `q` kommt ihr da auch wieder raus (falls jemand fragt 😏).

Is there a Linux user out there who could help me ?

I have a game (namely ARK:Survival Evolved) that would run perfectly on Linux Mint... if it'd let me use my AZERTY keyboard for binding special characters. All I need is to bind é/è/ç/à, I think.
It does not let me do that in the key binding panel of the game itself, so I do it in the input.ini file directly. But every time I change it in the input.ini & then start the game... it modifies my file again.

Here's my question :

To force a "read only" situation for ARK, but obviously still letting me "read and write" that file ?

Did a little adventure migrating my Debian Forky box from the in-repo nvidia (v550) drivers to extrepo nvidia driver (v595) as a work around for the kernel 6.19.x -> 7.0.x thing.

Yeah, don't do that.

I think the Debian maintainers do a bunch of work to the in repo drivers to make them 'nicer' - things like working better in multi-head. At least with my system sddm worked better. Also, the 595 drivers max the CPU under Plasma and makes it unusable (load avg ~25 on i7-11700k).

I ended up rolling back to v550 and pinning the kernel version to 6.19 for now. I'm still stuck with waiting for OpenZFS 2.4.2 for this box as well.

Nvidia drivers sure do make a mess between the number of packages required (with extra spicy things like new and interesting package name differences between in-repo and extrepo!) and the whole kernel version to module building process is a chore. I really appreciate that the teams make this work repeatably - especially when I tried going backwards to 6.19 with 595.

Anyway, rolled totally back to kernel 6.19, nv 550 and everything works as it should including OpenZFS v2.4.1 on this kernel.

One annoyance along the way was rolling back to v550 caused a sddm login loop. Deleting ~/.local/share/kscreen fixes this. Appears to undo minimal desktop tweaks, probably less noticeable on a non-multi-head host.

Things you do to avoid housework. Ha.

2. Apple Music clients
3. Something self-hosted to substitute Siri, with ability to set timers and stuff
4. A reminders app that can sync with a caldav server
5. Is there a port of GadgetBridge for Linux?
6. I’ll probably make my own water logging and HealthKit-alternative app/“protocol” if that’s not a thing yet, but less work is less work if that exists
7. A XMPP client, preferably with spaces support
8. Immich client (preferably with some form of caching for recent photos)
9. Bitwarden client
10. HomeAssistant client
11. E-mail client
12. These will probably go on waydroid, but: WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord and Signal clients
13. Some kind of map app, maybe with live traffic data?
14. Some kind of backup wizzard to my NAS, tho I’ll probably just make some rsync scripts

And also just anything y’all find useful in your daily life with a postmarketOS daily driver, I’m sure I’m forgetting a lot of stuff here.

I know some of those exist for desktop Linux, but I’m obviously looking for stuff made with phones in mind (so like… apps made for gnome should be automatically fine maybe?)

(Also, has anyone managed to get nix’s system-manager to work on postmarketOS? There’s no way I’m configuring all of this by hand every time I need to flash it lmao)

Probably a really silly #Linux question but here goes 😅

I recently installed #CachyOS on my daughters aging laptop and it works like a charm, and she is delighted she can now play minecraft with her friends using shaders and large mod packs, which she couldn't before, so that's a win!

I now want to install it on my desktop PC. When we put it on my daughters laptop she only had a few things installed but I have a shit tonne of stuff on my desktop, which is now 5 years old (Ryzen 5 gaming build).

I want to be done with windows so a full install of Cachy, but this is the silly question - do I need to uninstall everything first or will the Cachy installation take care of this for me? I guess I want a clean fresh install with nothing sitting in the background.

Also da kannste nichts sagen. Habe 7 Anwendungen von einem #raspberrypi in #Container auf einen #proxmox Server in 1,5 Stunden mit #claudecode umgezogen und konnte nebenher andere Sachen machen. Da waren keine ganz einfachen Sachen dabei. Unter anderem #Grafana / #Prometheus #Datenbank etc.. Das war großes Tennis und eine echte Erleichterung.

Das sprechepresserys der deutschen bananenbahn so: niemand hat die absicht, eine mauer zu bauen, über die unerwünschte betrübssysteme nicht drüberkommen, es ist nur eine maßnahme zur gewährung der sicherheit unserer kunden. Was für ein blendgeschwafel aus der PResseerklärungshölle!

Ein rascher Test unter Windows mit auf Linux geänderten User-Agent im Webbrowser liefert aber noch immer das Verhalten, dass die Suche nach einer Verbindung sofort eine Bot-Warnung auswirft. Mit Windows-User-Agent kommen hingegen die erwarteten Verbindungsdaten. Das Problem ist daher weiterhin ungelöst

Man kann natürlich annehmen, dass es sich nicht um eine böse absicht, sondern um blanke inkompetenz und völliges unverständnis für das, was man tut, handelt, kombiniert mit schnellen lügen aus dem gnobbelmatschgenerator… aber so viel wenigstens guten willen nehme ich bei der beschissenen, kundenverachtenden deutschen bananenbahn nicht mehr an. Was die machen, ist böser und fieser vorsatz, und zwar seit mindestens zwanzig jahren, und es wird jedes jahr ein bisschen schlimmer.

Wisst ihr noch, damals, als man gar kein händi brauchte, um eine fahrkarte zu erwerben, sondern einfach geld hingelegt hat und eine fahrkarte bekam.

OK, real talk real quick? If you have to transfer large amounts of photos from your Android phone to your Linux computer (as when, you know, you do your regular *local* backups, wink wink), get a USB cable and use android-file-transfer.

Yes, Martha, a USB cable!

Because when every other option to transfer the damn files wirelessly to computers I control has been sabotaged by the Android OS (I mean, why would they do want to do that, right? If not, for, I don't know... their cloud services?!), I guess no other way except going old school. Luckily, though, the application is super freaking fast and well done. Not once with me did the transfer drop because the phone went to sleep or due to some other esoteric error like it happens with "native" MTP.

So, yeah that was a nice discovery to end the night.

That’s a good question and objection. I think the answer is: Yes

But it does come down to your perspective on what ‘bad’ is. I also think that if BigTech had been successful in completely capturing Linux and Open Source we would be in a worse place and that the ‘bad’ would be more evident.

The willingness, and even enthusiasm, that Microsoft and RedHat (IBM) employees often show for compliance to freedom restricting policies is concerning. Age Verification in systemd being a recent example.

Now it didn’t look like that really led to any harm, yet. I understand that.

The car analogy is a good one and I think works to explain this concept and my concern:

“For your safety and the safety of the public, we must mandate that every car has a complex implementation of sensors, can communicate the data those sensors pick up and that the car can be remotely disabled.”

Linux certainly hasn’t reached that stage yet, but the policies that make brand new cars a privacy nightmare didn’t start out as obviously problematic as they are now.

It would be great to be wrong, when it comes to my concerns about BigTech take over of Open Source. But I think it is important to have options.

And sometimes those options are just fun. There’s an appeal to exploring off the beaten path.

nachdem ich jetzt alles in das jeweilige subvolume der 16tb platte kopiert habe, habe ich jetzt beide 4tb blockdevices aus der windows VM entfernt und stattdessen die jeweiligen mountpoints per #virtiofs und #winfsp mit den selben laufwerkbuchstaben in windows eingebunden - as if nothing happend 😳
mit #linux kann man den pc einfach genau so nutzen wie man will und nicht wie irgend ne kack firma vorgibt ihn nutzen zu sollen 😎

Wer nun nicht unbedingt spontan das Betriebssystem wechseln mag, kann sich durch Setzen des User-Agents im Browser behelfen. Wer dort „Linux“ durch „Windows“ ersetzt, erhält doch wieder Einlass und kann sich eine Verbindung auf der Bahn-Webseite suchen und sie auch buchen. Der Gegentest lässt tief blicken. Verpasst man einem Firefox unter Windows 11 eine Linux-Kennung, tritt das Verhalten auch unter Windows auf. Der Support schlägt unter Umständen den Wechsel auf Chrome vor, aber auch da: Aussperrung, sofern „Linux“ im User-Agent enthalten ist, der Tipp hilft nicht. Das lässt sich sogar mit Safari unter macOS provozieren.

Die frage, wer denen ins gehirn geschissen hat, kann ich leider auch nicht beantworten. Ach, kunden stören nur den betrieb? Dann müsst ihr windohs aussperren, das ist noch besser! 😁️

@stefano Revisiting this post. While I've largely used #ChatGPT and some #Gemini when researching #Linux and #FreeBSD stuff, I'd say #AI has come a long way. Are they perfect? No. Is it a replacement for man pages and the Handbook? No. Can they provide more info, context, and real world examples when the official #documentation falls short? That's a resounding yes.

It's been a while since I've seen AI give utterly incorrect info relating to FreeBSD. I am far from being the FreeBSD god I want to be and even I recognized the incorrect info at those particular times. But this was also a good 1.5 years ago.

I can't speak for #Illumos as I don't use it.

Anyone remember the old Mutt email client?

I had to use it again this evening to successfully find a 10 year old email from a bank buried in a 4GB MBox file in my archive. Quick grep to find the correct file then Mutt to view the message..

I've not used Mutt for about 15 years but the keystrokes came back to me almost immediately along with memories of SSH sessions to remote mail servers 25 years ago.

Happy days.

The reason RAM prices went up 4x is that a massive amount of not-yet-manufactured memory was bought with money that doesn’t really exist to be put into GPUs that haven't been made yet, to be installed in data centers that haven't been built, powered by infrastructure that may never exist, to satisfy demand that isn’t actually there, in order to generate profits that are mathematically impossible.

En revanche, j'ignore pourquoi, il faut que je lance le jeu via la fenêtre des réglages, sinon, le clavier ne veut pas fonctionner au moment de choisir la langue (et le clavier fonctionne après)
