Während das #Pipewire Audiosystem von meinem #UbuntuStudio offenbar Suizid begangen hat durch Update, läuft die von Updates völlig freie uralte Lösung mit dem MacBook Pro 2017 und dem #RME #Fireface nach wie vor sehr solide und mit nach wie vor bemerkenswerter Klangqualität. (Okay, so ein #Neumann #Mikrofon tut auch was dazu…)

Ich bin jetzt in dem Alter, in dem Software früher besser war.

Game Over : Sony annonce la fin des jeux physiques sur PlayStation

Bonjour,

En Novembre 2024, je parlais d’un pari pris par Sony en retirant le lecteur de la PS5 Pro et il semble que celui-ci a payé pour eux car ils ont annoncé la fin du jeu physique sur leur console à partir de Janvier 2028.

Si je n’ai jamais aimé cette folie du tout numérique et que je suis resté attaché au physique, il semble que cette annonce n’est pas passée inaperçue vu les presque 6800 réactions en 24h sur l’article en anglais écrit sur le blog PlayStation :

Et ci-dessous un exemple de commentaires :

Et autant dire que cela démontre un large mécontentement des joueurs et à raison :

• Les jeux physiques sont généralement moins chers à l’achat que les jeux proposés sur la boutique PlayStation (hors promo, les jeux restent au prix fort 🤑)
• Pas de concurrence possible en numérique, passage obligatoire par la boutique PlayStation
• Sony peut couper les accès aux contenus numériques à n’importe quel moment sans contre-partie, comme ça vient d’être le cas avec les films Canal+ achetés sur Playstation. A noter que cela pourrait également arriver avec des jeux !
• Les jeux physiques peuvent être revendus
• Il est possible d’acheter d’occasion et donc à des prix très attractifs
• Il est possible de prêter ou de se faire prêter des jeux
• Avec le numérique, fini le délai de rétractation. Une fois acheté et téléchargé, c’est déjà trop tard ! Sony vous fait cocher une case à l’achat pour ça.
• S’il n’y a pas de rétropédalage, ça risque également d’achever les revendeurs de jeux physiques et donc de détruire encore des emplois (RIP Micromania)

Pour l’exemple des prix, j’avais fait un comparatif dans l’article de 2024 pour donner une idée mais on peut rajouter des exemples plus récents avec une comparaison au 2 Juillet 2026, dont les jeux physiques étaient disponibles à 30€ (oui, j’arrondis pour les prix) :

A noter que ça faisait des mois déjà que j’aurais pu acheter Assassin’s Creed Shadows pour 40€ en physique. Un autre exemple avec le dernier GreedFall :

Pour être transparent, il y avait aussi une promo récemment dans la boutique PlayStation et ne pas la mentionner ne serait pas juste ! Avec celle-ci, le jeu était à 36€ et malheureusement toujours plus cher que le physique :

Cela dit, les retours négatifs et surtout les moqueries ne s’arrêtent pas au simple blog PlayStation… Beaucoup s’en sont donnés à cœur joie comme on peut le voir dans cet article de Next : Le disque ne tourne plus rond chez Sony

Dans ce même article, on peut également lire que Microsoft qui avait l’occasion de briller, ne l’a pas encore fait pour le moment, ils ont juste proposé de « numériser » les jeux physiques déjà possédés. De quoi noyer le poisson pour mieux faire avaler la pilule… Est-ce que cela va suffire ?

Reste à savoir maintenant si la grogne des joueurs sera assez forte pour qu’un retour en arrière soit envisagé ou si la fin de la console de salon comme on l’a toujours connu sera définitivement actée.

De mon côté, sans jeu physique, la console perd totalement son intérêt… J’y étais pour deux raisons : pas de prise de tête (on s’occupe de rien, on lance nos jeux et ça fonctionne) et pour les prix avantageux des jeux physiques (neufs, occasions et les prêts entre amis).

En enlevant le second avantage, pourquoi rester sur console quand plus de choix est possible sur PC ? Sans compter qu’aujourd’hui certaines distributions Linux permettent de jouer sans trop se prendre la tête (SteamOS, Bazzite ou GLF OS par exemple). Reste le choix de la machine (et de ses composants) à faire.

Il y a tout de même un autre critère qui fait mal, le prix des machines (consoles comme PC) qui ne cessent d’augmenter à cause du secteur de l’IA et des datacenters. Ce qui pourrait laisser croire que les actuels possesseurs de PS5 la gardent plus longtemps que prévu.

Je vais continuer à observer la situation pour voir vers quoi je vais me diriger après 2028 mais s’il n’y a plus de jeux physiques, peu de chance que je continue sur console.

Guess who didn't change directories correctly and ran ~$ cd ./ && rm -rf ./*

$HOME went from 1.4TB to 815GB in the seconds before I could stop the process. I didn't lose anything critical. Just a bunch of convenience stuff, some non-critical notes, and everything in ~/Desktop$ which was mostly convenience links and stuff.

Probably more I can't think of, but nothing worth crying over. Rebuilding the critical stuff from two day old #backups now.

My highest loads are during backups (borg) when the system hits just 80% idle. Use your precious RAM for gaming.

Das funktioniert mit jedem Wort, das man in die URL einträgt, wenn die Zeichenkette in einem Dateinamen vorkommt, dann wird das Bild angezeigt. Also eine Suchfunktion, die in der URL abgebildet wird. Später sollen auch noch Dateien aus den Ordnern angezeigt werden, die so heißen, also z.B.."schaf". Dann werden alle Bilder aus dem Ordner "schaf" angezeigt, und wenn es weitere Bilder gibt, die "schaf" im Dateinamen haben, zusätzlich diese.

@cstross @foone I do remember there was an additional wrinkle in that the (donated) box I was trying to install #Slackware onto was a PS/2 and the MCA architecture wasn't officially supported by the Slackware installation disks.

And astonishingly, I think I may have found a copy of the document I had to follow in order to hack the installation to work. https://www.linuxjournal.com/article/2037

Looking back and considering it was my first real experience with installing Linux, it's astonishing I got it to work. But it did, and that machine became my daily driver for the next few years.

After a one hour session on an exploratory test project I felt confident enough to edit my next video with KDEnlive instead of Cinelerra-GG. I tried some of the most common things I like to do in my edits, and figured out how to do them pretty quickly.

I'm in the process of editing that next video right now, and it's such a breeze. I do have to relearn things, and KDEnlive isn't without bugs either, but they're a lot less in your face than with Cinelerra-GG and the UI is 100000 times better. Seriously, I don't know what GUI library Cinelerra is using but it's so clunky.

All in all, I'm pretty satisfied. Things like speeding up parts of video are a lot less error prone, they keyframe handling took some getting used to, but now that I understand it feels much more intuitive than with Cinelerra. Keyframing the volume is a breeze. Just overall, I find KDEnline much more intuitive.

🎉 Massive thanks to the #wayland #redhat team and also a shout to @davidrevoy who recently dropped his Interim setup which first clued me in to "mouse mode" being on the horizon for stable 💘 (finally)

✅️ Sure enough, in Debian Testing w/ Wayland, the "Drawing Tablet" setting in KDE 6.6 automagically works with the following Gaomon tablets with no proprietary driver installed:

1️⃣ MK 2018
2️⃣ PD 1161

💡 The last two years were choppy and I even had to write a custom X config for the MK 2018 to teach an applied math course. Until recently, seeing no progress on the horizon for "out of the box" functionality, I had settled on @XLibreDev @sonicdesktop and was quite happy. In fact, very grateful to them for getting me by this last year - mucho thanks. #xlibre #sonicde #sonic

🏁 But, at the end of the day, I really need mainstream / stock Debian to just work with drawing products, not just for me ... but for my daughter's art projects - she just got her art accepted at @ffmpeg and I'm very proud of her. We rely on these products - there's no denying. At present:

Dascha uses:
1) X1 Carbon 4th Gen - using KDE neon stable (art attached that she did at 13 for ffmpeg)

2) HP All-In-One Touch i5 - using KDE neon stable

All working better natively in Wayland than under the prop driver. They work similarly well to how they work in X now.

Jonathan (me) uses:
1) 3x mini Ryzen PCs - KDE 6.6, Debian Testing, and Wayland - 1 w/ PD 1161 and 2 w/ MK 2018 - all working including "mouse mode" under wayland / stock Debia (art / teaching).

2) Dell 1950 laptop 2023 i7 w/ NVIDIA - had to manually build the nvidia driver under latest on their website, other than that no issues, running Debian Testing, Wayland, KDE 6.6 - MK 2018 works via USBC hub for teaching

3) X1 Carbon 4th gen i5 - Debian Testing, KDE 6.6, Wayland - works with Wacom stylus similar to Dascha's setup no issues

⁉️ How did this happen? I was fixing an old Precision 7920 and setting it up as a PeerTube runner on Lubuntu 26.04 (better with NVIDIA lol). I got bored and installed Kubuntu Desktop and then pluggeed in an MK 2018. It worked ... & so I started testing and researching KDE point releases & looking back at Mr. Revoy's post and switched all 7 machines over in < 48 hours.

Today, I was doing an upgrade of Percona MySQL server from 8.0 to 8.4.

It took 15-20 minutes to download a 118 MB .deb!

I forgot I had added Percona's repo to apt-mirror on an internal server of ours a few weeks back and forgot to update the web server to serve it so I fixed that.

Whipped up a new "deb822" percona.sources with their signing key but our URL. The result?

It took 1 second to download the percona server .deb.

Host your own .deb repos, folks! You can't count on the 3rd party hosted repo to always be there.

So I wanted to share with you this little project of mine. I delved into "retro-necromancy" and reanimated one very old UNIX utility called ile written by Robert Pendleton in 1988. I found it on one of the Walnut Creek source code CDs from 1994.
What it does is simply works like an input line editor (hence ile) for shells and programs that do not support interactive line editing. To put it simply, it adds Emacs-style keybindings like ^A, ^E, ^K, ^U and so on and command history that you can easily navigate.
Of course, these days it's hard to find a shell that doesn't support line editing.
But this little tool can still be usable, for example, with ed. It's nice to have Emacs-style editing in ed.
It can work like shell replacement or just run like a "middleman" between any given program. It respects terminal settings and doesn't get in a way. Keybindings are configurable.
Needless to say, the code from 1988 wouldn't run on any modern system. It was written in K&R style because there was no ANSI C standard yet! And #UNIX was quite a different beast back then.
So I ported it to modern systems, rewrote outdated bits (like sgttyb ioctls and brutal utmp handling).
Currently it builds and runs on #Linux, #OpenBSD, #FreeBSD and #NetBSD. Hopefully without too much bugs.

I'm submitting songs of mine for a sync agency, and they need instrumental versions. That would be easy enough, but the thing is, I record my vocals and acoustic guitar live in most cases, so any instrumental would have some vocal bleed. Stem-splitters are useful for reducing bleed.

Hm ich gebe zu ich bin von Arch Linux gerade etwas enttäuscht.
Ich habe eigentlich erwartet, dass Arch Linux da Rolling Release die neueste Version von GnuPG bereitstellt.
Aber pustekuchen die Distro bietet nur die veraltete Version 2.4.9 an.

Warum reite ich darauf rum? Nun ab Version 2.5.0 kann GnuPG quantensichere Verschlüsselungsalgos.

Je voudrais lui recommander un ordinateur durable, sans prise de tête, sous mint. Il faut du 16 pouces pour la vue qui baisse. Inutile de préciser que la puissance n'est pas la clef : ce n'est pas une joueuse en dehors de petits jeux Web. J'aime l'idée de #Framework. Mais le prix pique en 16 pouces. J'ai vu #Slimbook et #Tuxedo. L'idée : un dernier pc quali qui va durer pour ne pas déstabiliser l'utilisatrice sur le hard et le soft. Des idées / recos ? Merci !

I didn't do any Linux distro hopping, I'm only a recent #Mint user. I think Mint is said to work out of the box because you don't need to configure audio, sound, Bluetooth, connectivity by yourself. It will work. Hence, I think people describing Mint as too easy is just an over exaggeration. Because once you need to have relevant apps, programming and softwares, you'll start tinkering and troubleshooting. I have no expertise, but I'd assume as any other easy or hard distro out there.

The same cannot be said for many mainstream #Linux distros. The #Debian I started with in 2005 is most definitely not the Debian today.

The FreeBSD Handbook is great but the additional details and context for the topics covered are where this document really shines.

At Opera we built, IMHO, the best browser engine, Presto. It was built from scratch. It aced all the tests. It was lean and fast and could run on just about any hardware. It could even run on hardware where there was not enough memory to keep a full web page in memory, which is how it was able to run on things like mobile phones, game consoles, such as the Nintendo DS and Wii, and TVs. We even made it run effectively on servers, which is how we made Opera Mini. We did that with a relatively small team. It had grown to 100 by the time I left and needed to keep growing by about 10% pr year, at my estimate.

After I left, the idiots running Opera at that time decided to kill Presto and go for Webkit and Chromium. Microsoft made the same move.

When we founded @Vivaldi , we knew that building a browser from scratch is not trivial and we had to do the same as Apple, Google and Microsoft and build on available source. We choose the best one available to us.

We know how to build a browser. Likely better than most as we have been doing this for more than 30 years.

A strong Vivaldi can and will influence the Web in a positive way, like we did with Opera. If you want a better Web, supporting Vivaldi is one of the best ways to achieve that.
