Ich versuche bei meinem Debian 13 KDE in Dolphin meine Hetzner Storage Box einzubinden. Egal was ich versuche, es klappt nicht. Ich gebe oben in der Adressleiste fish://u123456@u123456.your-storagebox.de:23/backups ein und es öffnet sich die Abfrage der Userdaten. Dort gebe ich als User "u123456" und dann das korrekte Passwort ein. Dann kommt nur die Fehlermeldung, dass keine Verbindung zu dem Rechner aufgebaut werden konnte.
Wenn ich übrigens genau das Gleiche in der Konsole mache funktioniert der Verbindungsaufbau ohne Probleme.

Egal was ich versuche, ich bekomme es nicht hin. Gibt es hier in der Fediverse vielleicht Vollchecker die wissen, was ich verkehrt mache? 😬😎🙄

First time in my almost 30 years of #Linux (next October!!!) that the contents of the pager `less` actually matched the screen size minus one, leading to a confusing situation where I can't scroll nor see the lines it adds when the contents is smaller, and the last line says `(press q to quit)`.

But the real thing that capitalist are after is a free common good. Ideally they want to take control of it and make people pay THEM for it. But if they can't, they will try to destroy it.

Microsoft has been trying both strategies since the 90s.

But now they have government that not only stop their effort but will actually help attacking Linux (and more generally free software).

Linux success just means it gonna take most of the blows.

Linux is great and now it's getting popular, like really popular, because of Microsoft's stupid self-sabotage.

But this means Linux is more at risk than ever of being appropriated by some capitaliste or another. Or failing that, just being destroyed by legislative and economic warfare.

I mean it already was appropriated by google for smartphone and tablets.

The years to come are gonna be rough...

Wem gehört eigentlich deine digitale Identität?

Eine einfache Frage. Und doch beantworten wir sie selten bewusst. Denn die meisten von uns haben ihre E‑Mail-Adresse vor vielen Jahren eingerichtet. Vielleicht bei Gmail. Vielleicht bei Outlook. Oder bei iCloud. Es war bequem, kostenlos, schnell erledigt. Seitdem begleitet uns diese Adresse durch unser gesamtes digitales Leben.

Aber was würde passieren, wenn dieses Konto plötzlich nicht mehr erreichbar wäre? Wenn es gesperrt würde, gehackt oder aus irgendeinem Grund blockiert? Kein Zugriff mehr auf Online-Banking. Kein Login in den Passwortmanager. Keine Möglichkeit, Passwörter zurückzusetzen. Innerhalb weniger Minuten würde aus einem scheinbar harmlosen E‑Mail-Postfach das Zentrum unserer digitalen Handlungsfähigkeit werden.

Wenn wir über digitale Souveränität sprechen, denken viele zuerst an Messenger oder Browser. Doch der eigentliche Hebel liegt tiefer. Er liegt dort, wo alle Fäden zusammenlaufen. Bei der E‑Mail-Adresse.

CPython is both a compiler and an interpreter. It compiles Python source code to bytecode, then executes that bytecode on a stack-based virtual machine. Understanding this dual nature reveals how Python achieves its balance between high-level expressiveness and runtime efficiency.

The proposed California law requiring age verification on all OSs is just silly. How do you enforce a border on a kernel?

Unless they mandate locked bootloaders at the OEM level, which is a direct attack on #RightToRepair , they can't stop anyone from installing a #Linux distro. It is a move that only hurts law abiding users while being trivial for anyone with a thumb drive to bypass.

Privacy is a right, not a verified privilege.

Wem gehört eigentlich deine digitale Identität?

Eine einfache Frage. Und doch beantworten wir sie selten bewusst. Denn die meisten von uns haben ihre E‑Mail-Adresse vor vielen Jahren eingerichtet. Vielleicht bei Gmail. Vielleicht bei Outlook. Oder bei iCloud. Es war bequem, kostenlos, schnell erledigt. Seitdem begleitet uns diese Adresse durch unser gesamtes digitales Leben.

Aber was würde passieren, wenn dieses Konto plötzlich nicht mehr erreichbar wäre? Wenn es gesperrt würde, gehackt oder aus irgendeinem Grund blockiert? Kein Zugriff mehr auf Online-Banking. Kein Login in den Passwortmanager. Keine Möglichkeit, Passwörter zurückzusetzen. Innerhalb weniger Minuten würde aus einem scheinbar harmlosen E‑Mail-Postfach das Zentrum unserer digitalen Handlungsfähigkeit werden.

Wenn wir über digitale Souveränität sprechen, denken viele zuerst an Messenger oder Browser. Doch der eigentliche Hebel liegt tiefer. Er liegt dort, wo alle Fäden zusammenlaufen. Bei der E‑Mail-Adresse.

Stell dir folgendes Szenario vor, du kaufst ein neues Smartphone, bezahlst es aus eigener Tasche und gehst selbstverständlich davon aus, dass es dein Eigentum ist. Ein Jahr später erhält das Gerät ein Systemupdate. Danach erscheint beim Installieren einer App plötzlich eine Meldung: „Diese App darf auf deinem Gerät nicht mehr installiert werden.“

Nicht, weil die App illegal wäre. Nicht, weil sie nachweislich gefährlich ist. Sondern, weil der Entwickler nicht im vorgesehenen Register steht.
Genau dieses Szenario könnte ab September 2026 Realität werden.

lazyadmin : testing KDE’s Spectacle for OCR of images, without installing KDE

Very cool that KDE Plasma 6.6 includes Spectacle, a screenshot application, which can perform OCR on images. See the demonstration video in the last web-link.

Of course I wanted to try this as soon as possible. But how to get the brand new Plasma 6.6 ? And can Spectacle be used on a non-KDE desktop ?

For Debian, Linux Mint and Ubuntu there appears no option to have Spectactle

with OCR installed with an easy option. No Flatpak, no Snap and no AppImage to be found. And Debian Unstable had a 6.5.x version. I can imagine it will not take very long before 6.6.x When I wanted to test this I didn’t find out when OCR support was added to which Spectacle version, but as you can see in this interesting thread (with several script suggestions which may work for other screen shot programs!) it seems 6.5.3 may have it as well.

I decided to go for ArchLinux and installed Spectacle from Plasma 6.6 without too many KDE dependencies, and installed tesseract with a few tesseract language packs. When I tried to run it on GNOME desktop it gave an error saying that to use Spectacle on Wayland it needs KDE’s Kwin window manager.

Because I didn’t want to install more of KDE I went for Cinnamon desktop and there it worked very fine. Impressive and very useful for long texts from images.

The forum thread mentioned above also shows a comment about this software Normcap, available for Linux, Windows, MacOS.

To this day, the personal server that I use and depend on in my daily life runs a LAMP stack on #Fedora #Linux from primarily secondhand hardware. No Kubernetes, Ansible, etc, etc. Just old school bash automations via cron, and it's been going for well over a decade now like that. I manually upgrade the Fedora version twice a year, which usually requires me running two commands. Most everything else is automated with plain old bash.

Die Bilanz nach acht Monaten automatischen Updates per DNF in Fedora:

Ein immer aktueller PC und Notebook.
Beide haben Nvidia GPUs und selbst diese Tatsache hat zu keinen Ausfällen geführt.

Meinem Bruder habe ich letzten Oktober ebenfalls Fedora 42 und automatische Updates für sein Notebook mit Nvidia-GPU konfiguriert und das läuft auch geräuschlos.

Alles in allem schon praktisch. Wäre nur schön das über die Gnome oder KDE Oberfläche aktivieren zu können.

Und mein innerer Monk vermisst es irgendwie DNF5 bei der Arbeit zuzuschauen.

Ist ungefähr so ein Zen-Moment wie beim Windows 98 Defragmentierer 😊

Keyboard shortcuts power in UI control

I've had consistent good keyboard experiences with keyboard shortcuts in both closed source and Open Source programs
The program suite by AutoDesk ACAD which I know from version 10.0, was run on a single tasking 286 CPU with a seperate 287 math coprocessor installed. That computer was in URC, the computer lab of my University in SR/SA.
In that period of multitasking dark ages on x86 not even the coprocessor could be integrated on the CPU die. Of course my Amiga multitasked all it's programs in the same period, but that's for another toot ;)
ACAD10 and others have a set of nice functions which I still know by heart, because I can make nice 3D images with them

Sequence

• o (ortho)
• s (snap)
• l (line) from point to point indicated by digitizer
• layer (define layers and colours for objects)
• a (arc from {end of} axis to nice random point)
• the object snap function is at work here
• create different arcs in different layers
• setvar
• SURFTAB1 (value as large as the math coprocessor can handle)
• SURFTAB2 (same as above)
• revsurf (revolution of surfaces) rotate the arcs around axis
• a gorgeous multilayered / multi coloured object is created
• the SURFTAB valuse will be important in the next step
• shade
• autoshade() creates a magnifique shaded object within a number of seconds to a minute

The 3D objects look gorgeous!

I can create them in seconds on simple hardware, and can play by making them for hours

It was this early morning, when I tried to fire up GIMP, I noticed that I had forgotten to install this magnificent gfx tool kit.

I ran apt install gimp immediately

I've been using GIMP ever since it came out, decades ago (spawn 1995). Even though the UI was totally different from what I was used to, adaptation was fast and my fluency in use of GIMP increased fast. I like working in GIMP

The GIMP is 31 years old

GIMP v0.54 was first released in 1996

Over the decades I've seen a lot of users emitting futile complaints about the GUI, the use of many windows / viewports, while I can easily transition from closed source software on client's machines, to the GIMP, just by switching the mindset regarding the UI. The logic behind UI decisions is easily traceable.

GIMP has so many functions, I know of nobody who knows how to use all of them.

You should learn what you need to do, get fluent into those tasks, and learn more when you need more. This mind set also works in VIM, which has a massive ammount of functions and commands to make not only your programming in different languages more pleasant, it also has subtle assist functions which makes your source entries even more enjoyable.

GIMP always gives me consistent performance and I can rely on the keyboard shortcuts without having to use the mouse to select functions brushes, et all.
GIMP is for me a must have in my photo correction work flow. I've never relied on closed source software for those tasks, GIMP always has similar functions, many working even more efficient with your computer's CPU / GPU resources.

I got one of these laptops from @coreysnipes, and it’s working great! Given that this is a circa 2012 ThinkPad T430s, it runs @archlinux, @kde, @libreoffice, and @Vivaldi really, really well. It’s a damn shame that companies like Microsoft declare computers like this obsolete when they have so much more life left in them.

I’m happy that I got to save this particular machine from the scrap heap, and happy that I finally have a dedicated #Linux machine. And it’s not just any machine—it’s an honest-to-goodness ThinkPad that may outlive me. Seriously, it’s so friggin’ solid, and I love it.

I got Mint reinstalled.

Installed Steam after I got Vivaldi browser up and running and synced.

And, kids....if you want to install Steam in Mint or Ubuntu, don't use the software manager. Open a command prompt and use the following:

sudo apt install steam-installer

From the Reddit comment I found on this:

"steam-installer is a meta package (collection of packages) that includes a handful of recommended dependencies in an Ubuntu/Mint environment.

It includes the steam-installer script that is responsible for downloading the latest steam client on first execution and setup up the environment, steam-libs, steam-libs-i386, debconf, lsof, and zenity (a tool for displaying graphical dialog boxes from shell scripts), and any dependencies required for those packages (like steam-devices for example). It basically does everything needed and recommended for Steam to work except add the i386 architecture, which Mint already has enabled."

My first test of Steam, post-install, was to install Skyrim. It ran BEAUTIFULLY in high graphics mode.

Next up, Elder Scrolls Online..which has been downloading FOREVER...

On another note, this has me wanting to do more stuff in command line. 😁 ⌨️

La commande magique ? La voilà : $ grep -a -C 2000 "global_objects\.add" /dev/sda2 | tee recovered_data Oui, c'est juste grep. La magie de Gnunux : pas besoin d'installer un logiciel de récupération de données complexe et chiant à utiliser, c'est juste une bête commande disponible partout. Explications : grep, vous connaissez sans doute, ça va tout simplement chercher une chaîne de caractères dans un fichier, et vous la renvoyer avec plus ou moins de lignes de contexte ; -a est une option qui signifie qu'on veut traiter les fichiers binaires « comme si » c'était des fichiers textes : normalement la commande ne marche que sur du texte, mais si vous voulez chercher une chaîne de caractère dans les octets qui composent une image JPG, libre à vous ; -C 2000, « C » pour contexte : si la chaîne de caractères est trouvée, je veux que grep me renvoie les 2000 lignes qui « entourent » la ligne où la chaîne apparaît. Comme mon script faisait dans les 1000 lignes, j'ai tapé large. Vous pouvez aussi jouer avec -B (pour before) et -A (pour after) pour avoir un contexte non-symmétrique ; "global_objects\.add" : une chaîne de caractères dont je me rappelais qu'elle était présente dans le script en question. Si vous avez perdu un texte, essayez de vous rappeler d'un titre ou d'une séquence de mots spécifique. Pour ma part, je me souvenais qu'à un moment, je remplissais un set nommé global_objects ; /dev/sda2 : le truc magique, c'est que grep peut tourner sur une part

Problème :
J'ai un nvme sur lequel est installé Proxmox. La machine n'est plus accessible via SSH et j'ai bidouillé un truc (GPU passthrough), donc plus accessible avec un écran. J'ai besoin de changer un fichier dans /etc pour corriger un pbs réseau (et retrouvé le système ^^). Je boot sur une live USB pour accéder au stockage.
Sauf que je n'arrive pas à monter la partition concernée. Qqn saurait comment faire ?

Edit : trouvé.
La commande "fdisk --list" me donnait toutes les partitions. Je m'étais arrêté à l'occurence avec le modèle du nvme (sous /dev/nvme0n1). En regardant plus bas, j'ai une référence à pve-root sous /dev/mapper. C'était ça ^^

Hmm I'm at a crossroads...

I self-host my Matrix instance, have some encrypted rooms there, chat with people from other instances. Works fine.

But Hetzner just raised the prices, and my backups are getting bigger and bigger. It's now 8 Euro / month, and if the backups keep growing at this rate, by the end of the year it could be 10-12 Euro / month.

What do I do... Suck it up, or just switch to public instance...

Difficult choices...

Stell dir folgendes Szenario vor, du kaufst ein neues Smartphone, bezahlst es aus eigener Tasche und gehst selbstverständlich davon aus, dass es dein Eigentum ist. Ein Jahr später erhält das Gerät ein Systemupdate. Danach erscheint beim Installieren einer App plötzlich eine Meldung: „Diese App darf auf deinem Gerät nicht mehr installiert werden.“

Nicht, weil die App illegal wäre. Nicht, weil sie nachweislich gefährlich ist. Sondern, weil der Entwickler nicht im vorgesehenen Register steht.
Genau dieses Szenario könnte ab September 2026 Realität werden.

I thought it would be easier to have #Linux up and running on my daughter’s #Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 laptop.
#Ubuntu and #LinuxMint work perfectly out of the box. Even the touch screen! But Ubuntu bricks completely after a couple of days of connecting and disconnecting an external display. And Mint crashes on every display manipulation, like changing the resolution or connecting an external one.

I’ll surely jump into this hole of troubleshooting. There’s no way I’ll bring back #Windows on it.
