For day 18 and 19, about config and plugins i use mainly Lazy.nvim to install some.
And my config merits a full post.
Day 20 Replace in Files:
On day 12, I showed how to replace in multiple files using a macro. But, you can do differently using :vimgrep and cdo / cfdo. Something like this:
:vimgrep /old/ **/*.py
:cfdo %s/old/new/g
Don’t forget to preview first with :copen before doing big changes to your files.

Day 14 splits
One useful thing is to be able to split them equally. Hit <Ctl-w> =, and that’s it.
The other useful thing I opening a split with a specific height / width:
:30vnew " Vertical split, 30 columns wide
:10split " Horizontal split, 10 lines tall
Great for preview panes or narrow sidebars.
Also, one great thing is open file under the cursor in a new split
Horizontal: Ctrl-w f
Vertical: Ctrl-w F

#opensuse Leap 16.0 is out! I have some free time today so I'd figure I'd try it out in a VM.

This is not XFCE with Wayland. Time to troubleshoot.

What distro do you recommend for @kde last version usage, and last kernel usage (so not fully fixed), that is not from US and not subject to EAR.
Also this distro must also have at least one mirror in the EU that so not use any US system (for example exit nixos as it 100% dependent on github for their update / installation).

“We’re raising a generation of gamers, and they’re all going to switch to Linux.”

@johanneskastl I can't speak to specific models because it's been a while since I was in the market for a new either scanner or printer; but generally, if a printer lists IPP (Internet Printing Protocol) and Postscript support, then it will work on Linux with CUPS printing.
For the scanner part, look at SANE's (that was someone's way of saying Scanner Access Now Easy) supported devices list. Even the simplest scanning front-end applications support a "scan and print" / "copy" function.

Probably I will also shoot some videos soon for Linux Lorem, after cutting this presentation up into multiple topics and going more in-depth in each of them.
Another data corruption, fortunately not fatal, with btrfs. Two mirrored disks that have little activity. On the same server, Proxmox 9, there is also a ZFS pool (mirrored, more active). Same type of disks.
An employee mistakenly connected an electric heater to a socket protected by the UPS, and the server rebooted brutally.
Upon reboot, one of the two btrfs disks reported:
[ 167.015266] BTRFS error (device sdd): parent transid verify failed on 873906176 wanted 998679 found 998677
[ 167.017007] BTRFS error (device sdd): parent transid verify failed on 873906176 wanted 998679 found 998677
[ 167.052517] BTRFS error (device sdd): open_ctree failed mount: /btrfs: can't read superblock on /dev/sdd.
Result: unable to mount, even in degraded mode. The only way was to disconnect sdd and mount the other disk in degraded mode.
No issues with the ZFS pool.
Needless to say, I'm now copying the data to ZFS, and before tomorrow, these two disks will be a new ZFS pool.

- Fact: time is an irreplaceable critical resource, too often in short supply
- Resources: finite patience, focus, attention; infinite idgaf
Requisite Changes
- Core hardware from HomeLab will be moved to the colo this month (systems which matter)
- Likely much will be given to specific OSS projects for free, easiest for those local to Milpitas (colo)

I've been playing with LXC containers and other things a bit lately. There's a part of the nerd in me that says I should migrate all my stuff to the cool new thing. There's the more pragmatic part of me that recognizes everything is already working, systemd offers plenty of options to lock things down just about as much as a container, and it would be more difficult to do certain things, such as pass thru my single GPU to Jellyfin, if it were in a proper container.
Checking out the new #Google #Antigravity IDE to keep up with the times. Not only does this setting seem a little cursed, but of all the things you'd want to run inside a container, it's unfortunate that this isn't shipped as a flatpak.

Does anyone know why a desktop would attempt to PXE boot from the network when an ethernet cable is plugged in before powering up, even though the boot order is: USB drive, hard drive (of which there is only one), network? I switched to wired recently as wireless was a bit flakey, despite the desktop being <2m from the router.
Secure boot is enabled (I didn't enable it so presumably it was on by default) and the hard drive has full disk encryption using LUKS if that makes a difference.

@gperson Umm, that doesn't seem quite right.
I took the x86-64 assembler you posted (I don't have an ARM cross-compiling environment handy) and simply:
$ cat >src.s
...
^D
$ as -o bin src.s
$
According to `file`, this gives me a "ELF 64-bit LSB relocatable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), not stripped" which is 1080 bytes in size. Stripped, that reduces to 576 bytes.
That's `as` from Debian's binutils package version 2.44-3 on Trixie.

0xkato writes: ""A practical tour from write() to recv()
You run curl http://example.com and now you have some HTML in your terminal but what actually happened? Linux walks your bytes through a small set of well‑defined steps: pick a path, learn a neighbor’s MAC address, queue the packet, ask the NIC to send it, then reverse that on the other side.
This post tries to explain that path as simply as I can. If you’ve used #Linux, run curl, or poked at ip addr before, you’re qualified to read this. No deep #kernel background needed. […]""
@petko @rysiek @mozillaofficial Librewolf is clearly a fork.
Also, i get that everyone dislikes #AI and for good reason, but it's now also going to be acceptable for it to be used in development of the #linux kernel itself.
There are places where it works, and places where it's annoying and no one asked for it. Mozilla adding it to Firefox is obviously the latter of the two but AI overall is here to stay in some regards obviously.

@stefano @christopher I am not sure if I'd say #Linux is becoming like #Windows. I do recall similar statements made on the Debian-User mailing list on a previous release when xorg introduced autoconfiguration. A lot of people were pissed that it was making choices for you instead of manually configuring the xorg.conf file.
Honestly, that was a good thing. Painful doesn't begin to describe it but users were unaware they could still hand-configure the file.
There has been, however, more stuff added to Linux over the last several years. Call it bloat, call it whatever you want. OSes change. But it has been gradually moving away from simplicity.
I miss the simplicity.
However, to reply to your original post, coming from COTS solutions, sometimes the vast amount of choice can be overwhelming. For instance, when it comes to #FreeBSD #jails it used to just be jails. Now, it's thin, thick, classic, networking. I understand they have their places but it would be helpful to provide more detailed explanations, tutorials, or best practices for each. The FreeBSD Handbook is good but just scratches the surface but often leaves more questions. It would help with learning and in part...marketing.
On a side note: The FreeBSD Handbook is a great resource but there are opportunities to improve it, like tailoring it to new users (better empathy), best practices, architectural examples, and links to additional resources and info.

Last week I had a chat with a colleague who is highly specialized in Microsoft solutions. Young but not too young, smart, not very up to date simply because he has little time for anything else. His specialization depends entirely on where he works, not on personal interest. Lately he seemed a bit disillusioned with some choices made by "other operating systems", and he was starting to consider moving his personal projects toward Microsoft as well, since he already had the experience. Still, he said it with boredom. With the attitude of someone who is tired of wasting time.
He had heard of the BSDs but had never tried installing them. He was convinced that there were no decent hypervisors outside the Linux world and that KVM belonged to Linux alone. I had the terrible idea of showing him the BSDs, how great bhyve is, and how nvmm on NetBSD uses qemu underneath, making it almost a replacement for KVM in many setups. He lit up with the look of someone waking up from a long sleep. I also had the terrible idea of showing him illumos and its distributions. He had no clue it existed and thought old, great Solaris had been dead for years thanks to Oracle.
He called me a little while ago. He was furious. He spent the whole weekend doing tests and now he has no idea what to use among FreeBSD with bhyve, NetBSD with nvmm, and illumos with bhyve or kvm. He is slowly starting to explore jails and illumos zones. He was annoyed (in a positive way) because now he does not know what to pick since everything feels so different from what he was used to, and he found advantages in each option.
I am obviously happy about it, but I also wonder: instead of reinventing the wheel every time, would it not sometimes be better to simply broaden our horizons?

""So we have a slightly larger rc6 than usual, but I think it's just the random noise and a result of pull request timings rather than due to any issues with the release. But I guess we have a couple of weeks remaining to find out....
The fixes are all over the place, and nothing stands out, except for how it really is pretty varied. […] ""
I'm in Australia right now. I can boot my home PC via Wake On LAN to access my files if I have to. I placed a webcam in front of it so that I can verify that it actually does so.
It's weird seeing my computer 16.500 km away from me. It feels like my own little Mars mission. Especially with how SSH feels at 300-400 ms latency.
And yes, that's a drinking glass I forgot on my desk.
Wait..... For #Ubuntu I have to install a _extention_ so my apps windows remember their last location? I know I'm sounding very grumpy this afternoon but why is this something the user has to do? Why isn't this just installed and setup automatically?
I feel like every few years when I try #linux again, I send a round of these #UX messages, so apologies if this feels repetitive...

✅ Okay, after some more testing, looks like it's somehow related to the Wireguard tunnel, not the upgrade (I might have simply had bad luck with timing and noticing a problem and jumping to the conclusion that it was related to the upgrade).
Previous kernel, same tunnel, same issue.
New kernel, different tunnel, not a problem.
So likely NOT a Debian Trixie 13.2 issue after all! Good! I can poke at this separately.
Trying to get Dawn of War II to work with multiplayer co-op on Linux using the GOG version is an insane process. Anyone else having IPv6 issues (possibly with Wireguard) after the Debian Trixie 13.2 update just now, which includes a kernel upgrade 6.12.48-1 to 6.12.57-1? It was working before, and after the upgrade I don't seem to get any IPv6 default route. (I do get an IPv6 assignment.)
Haven't had any opportunity yet to do much troubleshooting, but don't see anything obviously relevant in the Debian bug tracker or debian-user archives.

Debian 13.2 is out. As always with a bunch of security and bug fixes.
To summarize some things I've learned lately. chroot jails are useful, but if your goal is to cordone off systemd services without a full VM or LXC container (necessitating separate system updates), systemd has lots, and I mean "lots" of options to containerize services; private tmp folders, hiding other users' processes, etc.. systemd will create its own chroot at /proc/PID/root and then mount things inside there according to the options you specify in your service file.

Hi #Linux, ever heard of https://paldo.org?
paldo is a Upkg driven GNU/Linux distribution. It's kind of a mix of a source and a binary distribution. Even though it builds packages like a source distribution it provides binary packages.

paldo stands for "pure adaptable linux distribution" and they try to accomplish this in every package.

Are there some primers or pointers towards resources that I can use to better tune the performance of my system?

""In the last few years, the capabilities of coding tools have exploded. As those capabilities have expanded, contributors and maintainers have more and more questions about how and when to apply those capabilities.

@stefano Great post! I've been using #Linux #FreeBSD for about two decades and want to share my experiences. For context, Linux became my daily driver and I dabbled in FreeBSD on the side.
As a newcomer to both the #technology and #culture of #Linux and the BSDs, *back then* there was more toxicity. And by toxicity I mean abrasive and unhelpful responses ("RTFM!") or some kind of "l337" attitudes in various mailing lists and forums. This, of course, was before YouTube and Reddit, where the former mediums were more prevalent.
Some Linux distros were friendlier than others. In those days, the #Debian mailing lists and forums were a rough place for newcomers and it drove a lot of people away. I left the forums because of that. I rarely post to the mailing lists but for other reasons.
At some point, there was considerable effort to improve the etiquette in said mediums, particularly the mailing lists. Sure, some fiery disagreements can take place but overall people are friendly and welcoming.
FreeBSD, on the other hand, has been a more positive experience. Yes, there are people who are vocal about their contempt for Linux, but they aren't disrespectful to other people.
Having witnessed both communities grow and change over the years, there's definitely less toxicity and FreeBSD is still a more welcoming community.
First #Linux #Kernel #Panic ever in 22 years.
It’s not even a real one!
Since #Fedora 42, the generated kernel images seem to be larger than how they used to be. And because I prevented the deletion of the last 7 kernels, the `/boot` partition ran out of space, so the `dracut` couldn’t generate the required images for the newly updated kernel.
So, My advice if you plan to keep the last 10 kernels, give `/boot` at least 3GB.
Or 5GB for future-proof.
1GB seems not enough anymore!
I've taken the time to read this IT notes Story where we are reminded to use Open Source Code in the diverse way it's intended
I can give you an example regarding the _if tools_
**ifconfig** is in my _muscle memory_ the things that I need executed from this program just fly out of my fingers in reflex mode
I've been using the if tools ever since we needed to _compile everything_ ourselves, when we wanted to run an Open Source Environment, where the kernel was written and delivered in source code only.
If this is the first toot you read by me, I've been with the Open Source community on the Linux side since the alpha versions were coded and distributed through Usenet, in comp.os.unix.*
In that period you were grateful when a task set that you needed to execute, had a program, which would either make your task easier or better manageable, than doing everything by hand in a laborious manner
Ever since the beginning there are different GNU programs, written in the Richard Stallman period, that can do similar things. All you need to do is choose what you like and stick with it
If you do not like the way it works, you can fork it & change the code, if you don't know how to write a line of code, there are _manual pages_ available which you can use as teaching methods to learn how to code yourself
All you need to be for that is an _autodidact_
You have the power of the **Source Code** readily available right in front of you
At a certain point in time _Bram Molenaar_ did not like the way VI worked; he want it more than vi offered. At this point in time Bram Molenaar programmed vim on the _Amiga_ computer. Since the true Open Source form was followed vim was also distributed in Source form and was happily adopted by others who were thinking in a similar manner as Bram Molenaar and they started to contribute to that program.
vi is a vital program on UNIX systems. What Bram has made, is create a _choice_ for people who want it more than what vi offered.
# vim & vi happily coexist!
## This is the beauty of Open Source
At a later point in time this is also what happened with the programmer who wanted more than what the if-tool set offers. Thus the command set of _ip_ was programmed. Similar to vi and vim they happily coexist.
### However on the distribution level something changed.
After a couple of decades I noticed that traditional tools, that have been tried, tested, stable and have withstood the test of time, were dropped from the base installations. You have to go and fetch them yourself. It was even done with _critical tools_ like the if tool set. It's not just one distribution that's doing it but different distributions.
I was busy with an installation; at a certain point I needed **ifconfig** to work on my network interface devices; I needed to configure something on the fly. Imagine my facial expression when I detected that ifconfig wasn't in the base installation!
The machine was in a _chicken egg_ situation because I had &no access to the network_ I had to stop, go to another place fetch the if tools separately, find out that they were dropped for reasons which were totally irrelevant to my work, go back to the machine, install them separately and in the process waste many valuable minutes of time.
It was then that I started to notice the pattern a pattern of **polarization** removing tools which are critical to base installations without leaving a warning
I had to _change_ my setup routine which has been working for decades in a _flawless_ manner, because someone somewhere decided that a good tool set became obsolete.
This polarization is not only in the choice of what commands are chosen to be in the base installation of a distribution, it's in many different sections of the open source community which is what Stefano has shed some light upon.
Polarization because of diversity is totally unnecessary, happy and peaceful coexistance is key
* You can love vim yet cherish vi
* You can glorify emacs yet admire vim
* I can love XCFE cherish LXDE, admire KDE & like GNOME all simultaneously
Depending up on what I'm doing, what machine I am working on (SBC server embedded system), what is needed on the task at hand, I simply adapt and work with the diverse tools available for free.
There is absolutely now need for polarisation or Toxic behavior in the Open Source ENV:
Another example is the direction that Gnome went many years ago.
In that period I used Enlightenment, Gnome, KDE and FVWM simultaneously on different machines. All WM are working in a manner that I like. When however the Gnome programmers decided to strip configuration features of the Desktop Environment, I didn't go on a rant, I didn't bother to fork, because of the massive amount of work involved.
I just left in Peace
Diversity is Vital. GNOME is Vital! We need them all

This Isn't a Battle
After reading a post describing the FreeBSD community as 'toxic', I share a different perspective. This isn't a battle. It's a reflection on coexistence, the original Open Source spirit, and the quiet richness of taking a different path.

What is disturbing to me is that the term side loading has been invented to make users think that they are not allowed to install any program on their computers other than those sanctioned by some company.
People are also made to believe that their phones are special devices while in fact they are simply very powerful small single board computers.
Instead of getting angry or frustrated the Open Source Community should band together so that full-blown Linux based Operating Systems can be made available for the masses, be installed as easy as standard Linux distributions on X86 and on SBCs is like the Raspberry Pi ARM family, so that they can remove the bloatware which Google dictates and then install any Linux flavor designed for their Android computers

As part of creating the upcoming #Linux video channel, I'm preparing a few thumbnails as a test. Trying out a few effects, making it a little bit more shiny at each attempt.
While taking a lot of time, it's actually fun to play around. In this case a little bit more polishing is needed, like the #systemd logo.

The recording from the LF webinar "Update on Key Improvements to #Linux & #NFS" is available now:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3HIIQe_cJI
From the abstract (https://www.linuxfoundation.org/webinars/update-on-key-improvements-to-linux-and-nfs-creating-a-high-performance-standard-for-ai-workloads?hsLang=en):
""With an ongoing series of updates to the #Linux NFS kernel and pNFSv4.2, standard distributions now include key features for high-performance workloads and the distributed hybrid storage environments needed for AI and other GPU-based use cases. These enhancements enable modern data centers and clouds to support such workloads globally with standard Linux, and without the need for proprietary clients to support multi-vendor data environments.
In this session we will cover the latest kernel additions up through #Kernel 6.18, to enable such use cases, and look ahead to future enhancements coming in the next year.""
Quick reminder on the likely reason why Valve's New Steam Machine only supports #HDMI 2.0:
""At this time an open source HDMI 2.1 implementation is not possible without running afoul of the HDMI Forum requirements.""
This is what Alex Deucher, the maintainer of the amdgpu #kernel driver, said one and a half years ago here:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1417#note_2303163
And from the ticket it looks like the problem remains.
See also Alex's earlier comment from early 2021 in the ticket:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/1417#note_830547
""HDMI 2.1 is not available on #Linux due to the HDMI Forum.""
The (new) Steam Machine is a semi-custom desktop PC.
Marketed to a massive mainstream audience.
And it ships with Linux.
And it's now part of an entire Linux gaming ecosystem.
This is a big, big deal.

It's incredible how silent my laptop with Linux Mint is compared to when it was running Windows 11.
With the latter the fans would start kicking in at random points suggesting it was doing all sorts of behind-the-scenes shenanigans.
When I boot up the Win10 VM, the fans are on - a lot. This could be the KVM software dealing with a pretty large process, but I also think it's Windows trying to do nefarious things under the bonnet.

So... @fedora has made a policy explicitly allowing AI code. So I have to change my home distro.
@gentoo and @netbsd both have specific policies against it, but I ain't about doing a Gentoo install (sorry, guys, I love you for this, but I need a binary first distro), and NetBSD ain't great for gaming AFAIK.
So... any other Distros wanna step up and do the right thing? @archlinux? @opensuse? @debian? #VoidLinux? @alpinelinux?
Just a public statement that says "No, we don't want that crap" would be plenty --- I understand the difficulty of enforcing the policy, but setting it as a community/commit standard would go a long way towards making a lot of us feel better.

Ok! The Linux Install Party is done!
I am declaring it a success!
So we only had one week to prepare for this and notify folks in town about it.
Last week we:
- Reserved a room at the local library
- Created the website (just a digital flyer site)
- Printed out release forms
- Made a handful of install USB ISOs with Linux Mint on it
- Made a post on the town's subreddit, a couple local discord channels, and told people to tell others
Not a lot of advertising at all.
But!
We had:
- 7 volunteers show up
- 5 groups of people who got Linux installed on their laptops (including one family: a mom and dad who were updating an old laptop for their 8 year old to use)
- And a good handful of people who stopped by to see what it was about, ask questions, and try out our demo laptops running Linux
All installs went chill. We even popped open one laptop to try and repair it (the keyboard and touch pad were borked. It turned out to be a hardware issue. We determined that an external keyboard and mouse were the quickest and cheapest fix. the laptop itself and linux install worked great)
When we werent installing things, we were hanging out, discussing linux and various open source projects and town groups and events and getting to know each other and generally just having a great time. I met new people from town and had some wonderful conversations. No masking, just being myself.
Folks really wanted this to happen again. We even had a librarian come in and ask when we were doing it again so they could bring their laptop to get Linux installed! Some of the volunteers were from the local college and said they had a great time and want to do these events at college and in town again.
We're shooting for next February (in conjunction with a repair cafe) and will try and hold it every month thereafter. Once its a regular monthly event and word of mouth and proper advertisement and posting flyers up in cafes etc, more people will show up and it will grow!
We also think we can make it an official library event (and not just a community event using library space). Once that happens it gets into the town events notification and really attracts folks!
That was awesome.

Oui.

It took me two days of learning and re-learning, and some of it was frustrating since I'm rusty, but I finally made some headway in a gaming benchmark project AND figured out how to chart frametimes!
I wanted to see first-hand if/how all the updates to the Mesa + Vulkan graphics stack improved in the last 2 years. Here, Dirt Rally exhibits much better frame pacing, lower frametimes ,less spikes. Resulting in smoother gameplay. And this is only on a Radeon 780M APU.
Anyway, having fun :)

Does anyone in the #Linux #Gaming space know what's up with https://flightlessmango.com? It's associated with MangoHud, and it's been down for at least 2 days.
https://nird.forge.apps.education.fr/linux/
Advice needed: I want to set up #Linux Kiosk PCs. Users must log in with a card ID and password that are verified via a PHP webservice against a MariaDB.
The challenge: I need the Linux desktop login (e.g., via a Display Manager like LightDM/GDM) to authenticate against the custom remote service.
How can I implement this? Custom PAM module? Python-pam? Scripts?🤔

Now, most of my installs are Debian, Linux Mint Debian Edition or Devuan.
I plan on doing more with NetBSD

About a month ago, someone local reached out and asked if I could fix this windows laptop that was running like crap.
I said yes, but it would be by installing #nixbook
They were like, sure, nothing to loose.
Not only did they love it, but now their sibling wants the same thing.

Some of these linux distros absolutely need better marketing and information presentation! There are kickass features I discover in some of these that has me like, "why wasn't this obvious or prominently highlighted before this is awesome!"
