    Looks like in 24.04:
-- pam_nologin.so still honours both /var/run/nologin (sic) and /etc/nologin by default; but
    -- `/lib/systemd/systemd-user-sessions start' removes only /run/nologin, not /etc/nologin
So if you create /etc/nologin and reboot, users still cannot log in.

pam_nologin(8) tells the truth. systemd-user-sessions(8) mentions only /run/nologin, even in Ubuntu 22.04 where /etc/nologin is removed; I clued in by running strings on the 24.04 and 22.04 binaries.

It looks like someone reported removing /etc/nologin as a bug, and that was accepted and systemd `fixed.'

I guess I can see the desired to have a `no user logins' flag that persists over reboots, but that is not what /etc/nologin has been for decades. They should have made a new file rather than changing the meaning of the existing one.

No, who am I fooling? systemd is not about compatibility or keeping systems working in a consistent way. systemd is about chaos.

Linus once again expresses his dislike for "Link" tags in commits that link to the last patch submission:

        lore.kernel.org/all/CAHk-%3Dwh

But he (as usual) has a point: ""[…]I get really damn annoyed when I wonder about some context of a commit, and follow a link to look at the background, and all I see is that SAME DAMN PATCH that I already looked at […]""

Sometimes I think we should start using self-generated change-id for patch series[1] and individual patches, which b4 and maintainer scripts then could convert to "Link:" tags that use lore to find the complete history of a patch.

But I guess that would be a really hard sell.

[1] might be nice for stable maintenance as well, as that would allow "this patch was part of a series" lookups, as it might depend on earlier patches from the same series

Hello, oh Fediverse! I'm hoping someone can share some of their wisdom with me.

At some point, the meaning of SUID (at least for Linux, or some distributions of it) changed subtly. In, for example, RHEL 7 and earlier, a SUID process could access things belonging to its original owner - it gained the privs of the new user, but that wasn't exclusive. RHEL 8 and later, a SUID process no longer has access to the privs of the user that launched the SUID binary. In recent Debian and FreeBSD the SUID process doesn't have access to its old user, but I haven't got older versions around to compare.

Is there a backstory or some flag day where this behaviour changed that anyone can remember?

To be usable by the less savvy, the Linux desktop lacks stability. Not software stability, but organizational and human stability.

I want maintainers to have a stable income. I want apps to last a decade, instead of having to chase the next rewrite of an abandoned project.

The Linux desktop is a beautiful accident that only exists because people devote part of their lives to it, for better or worse. We ought to support it financially, as a public service.

Creating a web page is only the beginning. The business of sharing it with the world has a lot of
moving parts and a lot of choke points. If an ISP decides to stop traffic to your website or if your
hosting platform goes bankrupt there isn't a lot you can do about it. But what you can do is have a
solid Plan B — being ready to spin up another copy of your website on another server. A server that
you control, or at least a server of your choosing.

This guide shows one way to do set up your own hosting. It's not the only way or even the best way.
But it is at least a path through the desert.

The fact that Google may be ending sideloading apps on Android forever is another reason we should donate more to @postmarketOS

With 1-2 more years of work, it could reach a state similar to Desktop Linux or Android ROMs, where everything works, at least on a good number of devices.

Vulkan is described as a cross-platform, open standard set of APIs that allows programs to use GPU hardware in various ways, including drawing on screen, doing calculations, and decoding video via custom hardware accelerators. The text mentions that decoders use the same hwaccel API and commands, making them easy to enable with Vulkan decoding. Encoders, such as ffv1_vulkan, require specifying a new encoder. Currently supported codecs include FFv1, ProRes RAW, and VC-2, with ProRes and VC-2 implementations in review for the next minor release. The text concludes by mentioning that these new codecs can provide significant speedups and open possibilities for non-linear video editors and lossless screen recording/streaming.

Suppose you have a shell script run with the "-e" flag, i.e., it's supposed to exit immediately if a command exits with a non-zero exit status. But there's one particular command you want to capture the exit status of so you can check if it's a particular failure code and ignore it if so. What's the cleanest way to do that?

I'm going to use it as a presentation host that I can remote control via VICREO Listener from a Companion VM that runs in my homelab and is controlled by a Stream Deck. The presentation display is shared via OBS, the presenter display is for me.

I was sitting nearby but she accomplished the task all by herself. I just explained what "LVM" means as this was not explained properly by the Debian installer.

The video has 1K views and was uploaded 5 months ago. The browser's address bar shows the URL "www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v9m5d1DIrE." On the right side, there are related video suggestions, including titles like "Linux Survival Guide 2: Running Windows Applications" and "The Making of BSD." The background of the browser window shows a sunset over water. The desktop environment appears to be a BSD-based system, with various application icons visible in the taskbar.

The main focus is a video titled "FreeBSD - The Really Alternative Desktop OS," featuring a 3D model of a computer board, likely a Raspberry Pi, with various components like USB ports and a cooling fan. The video has 1K views and was uploaded 5 months ago. The browser's address bar shows the URL "www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v9m5d1DIrE." On the right side, there are related video suggestions, including titles like "Linux Survival Guide 2: Running Windows Applications" and "The Making of BSD." This idea has been in my mind since the very beginning of this adventure, almost two years ago. Over time, several people have suggested it. But until recently, I felt the timing just wasn’t right - for many reasons. Today, I believe it finally is.

So I’m happy to announce a new service:
The BSD Cafe Journal - journal.bsd.cafe

At first, I thought I’d use BSSG for it (I even added multi-author support with this in mind), but in the end, it didn’t feel like the right tool for the job.

The idea is to create a multi-author space, with content published on a fairly regular basis. A reference point for news, updates, tutorials, technical articles - a place to inform and connect.
Just like people in Italy used to stop by cafes to read the newspaper and chat about the day’s news, the BSD Cafe Journal aims to be a space for reading, sharing, and staying informed - all in the spirit of the BSD Cafe.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      What it’s not:
It’s not here to replace personal blogs, or excellent newsletters like @vermaden ’s. And it’s not an aggregator.

A place where authors can write original content, share links to posts on their own blogs or elsewhere, publish guides, offer insights, or dive into technical explanations.

The guiding principles are the same as always: positivity, constructive discussion, promoting BSDs and open source in general. No hype (sharing a cool new service is fine, posting non-stop about the latest trend is not), no drama, no politics. The goal is to bring people together, not divide them. To inform, not inflame.

Everyone should feel welcome reading the BSD Cafe Journal - never judged, offended, or excluded.

This means every author will have their own identity in the Fediverse (like: @stefano ) and can be followed directly, and it’ll also be possible to follow the whole Journal.

Like a roomba, but for the bottom of the pool. We call it poomba. Anyways, I want to shoot an MP4 video with a stationary camera (a GoPro) looking down on the pool while the robot does its work. So I will have this overhead video of like 3-4 hours.

I want to kinda overlay all the frames of the video into a single picture. So the areas where the robot drove will be dark streaks (the robot is black and purple). And any area the robot didn't cover would show the white pool bottom. Areas the robot went over a lot would be darker. Areas it went rarely would be lighter.

I'm just super curious how much coverage I actually get. This thing isn't a roomba. It has no map and it definitely doesn't have an internet connection at the bottom of the pool. (Finally! A place they can't get AI, yet!) It's just using lidar, motion sensors, attitude sensors and some kind of randomizing algorithm.

I think of it like taking every frame of the video and compositing it down with like 0.001 transparency. By the end of the video the things that never changed (the pool itself) would be full brightness and clear. While the robot's paths would be faint, except where it repeated a lot, which would be darker.

I could probably rip it into individual frames using and then do this compositing with or something (I'm doing this on ). But 24fps x 3600 seconds/hour x 3 hours == about 260K frames. My laptop will take ages to brute force this. Any more clever ways to do it?

Generally, most of this hardware should be in one of the office racks (1U switch + 2x 0.5U patches + 1U UPS), specifically NOT in my walk-in closet. It's a work in progress.

I read 10 different opinions on how to do it, b/c the first 9 are unintelligible, sound too risky, or just don't work.

I have to stop and research to figure out if/how I can go back to zero.

There is no standard packaging format among distros (something that I don't think will be resolved any time soon) and I've always viewed third party packaging tools like and with skepticism, mainly from a perspective.

We’ll talk about the costly operations that are involved, such as VM exits, VM entries, context switches, and userspace processing by Qemu. Then we’ll introduce vhost and elaborate on how it addresses these issues by moving data-plane operations either into the kernel (kernel-based vhost) or into a specialized userspace process (via vhost-user).

Debian 13 is good.

The Linux Foundation is a 501(c)(6) organization; it explicitly exists for the benefit of its members. This is in contrast to 501(c)(3) organizations, which are explicitly for the public benefit. The FreeBSD, NetBSD, and Plan 9 Foundations are 501(c)(3) organizations. I am less well-versed in Canadian tax codes, but my understanding is the OpenBSD foundation is their equivalent of a (c)(3). LF is a notable outlier here.

I then successfully downloaded and installed DEBIAN (only 1 disc), but got a command line prompt. After testing every DOS/NT command I knew, I never got a GUI, so I went back and burned the proper Fedora Core installer (another 5 discs).
