Here's the funny thing: if you don't like the direction that #Linux and open source world in general has chosen (i.e. "embrace AI") and you'd like to use AI-free products, then one of the best alternative you have right now is #Slackware 15.0.
It was released before AI bubble. Kernel 5.15 does not (AFAIK) contain any LLM-generated code. Distribution itself contains absolutely insane amount of everything you might ever need. And all that "everything you might need" also was written long before AI bubble.
Of course, kernel 5.15 does not necessarily support your latest and greatest hardware in the best way possible, but those are trade-offs. Also you can upgrade to something like 6.12 (still no AI patches AFAIK).
And yes, the distribution still receives updates and patches (although no one can guarantee if those patches are AI-free or not, of course).

I don't know who needs to hear this, but #Linux is political. You personally might not be into it for the politics, which is fine I guess, but anything that pushes back against America's global tech monopoly is a political project. It can't not be.

Well, the network configuration story is very not good. You know how Linux has NetworkManager? On FreeBSD, if you want to configure network interfaces by GUI, you…run a GUI app as root via sudo.

#Arch for tinkerers

I'm still blown away how flexible Debian is. I love the zen of GNOME, but I can just as easily put any other desktop environment on it and it's just as rock solid stable.

Yes, #Linux now runs on almost everything, but the cost of that is enormous complexity. It's also thirty years old, and based on a fifty year old design.

If he wants to run his project his way, I think he's entitled. It doesn't mean we have to use it.

This is the second post where you'd dropped the F bomb....for good reason.

I have so much to say but not sure how to say it but I will do my best. For *years*, I've enjoyed using #Linux both as a hobbyist and professional #sysadmin. The OS is definitely not the one I started with 20+ years ago. Since at least COVID has....well, it's turned into a full blown corporate-controlled high speed sprawling mess. Not necessarily matured just grown exponentially wherever the various powers see fit. For this and other reasons, I am leaning more and more towards #FreeBSD.

Lastly, I will admit there are some #AI niche use cases which do interest me (related to my own hobbies) but shoving it into everything is not a good idea.

The argument that "AI works therefore we should use it" is akin to "Torture works therefore we should use it."

I don't mean that as hyperbole.

The underlying purpose of AI is at least twofold:

1) It puts a layer of abstraction over information.
- Primary Source: Raw data (eg video footage of an event)
- Secondary Source: Analysis (eg Low bias news and analysis of what this event means in the context of other events)
- Tertiary Source: Meta Analysis (eg Encyclopedia entries summing up Analysis)
- Quaternary Source: News Opinion and Propaganda (eg a "News Entertainment" channel that tells you what to think regarding the event)
- Pentanary (?) Source: TLDR summations divorced from underlying sources (eg AI summations, guides, etc that describe events or provide recommendations and guidance but follow behind the scenes algorithms that control the output)

The purpose of this layer of abstraction is control of information and removing the distribution of information from the actual events. This allows for influence campaigns, tuned marketing, tuned propaganda, and therefore control.

2) Centralization of compute power
- Computers in our hands that we control allow us a lot of power.
- Moore's Law no longer applies to localized compute power so we are in an era of repair and maintenance.

That means two things for corporations. Loss of income and loss of control.
- Forcing us to use centralized compute forces us to continue to spend money
- Localized AI engines still allow for centralized algorithms. (open sourced algos and localized engines dont factor in here as use and usecases are low)

AI is being pushed so heavily because both governments and corporations need it to further their wealth and power.

They push it via both making it cheap and accessible and having a veneer of usability.

This is a similar pattern to "Underpricing competition to drive them out and then jacking up rates when you have a monopoly", "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" and similar approaches.

So.

I am not arguing whether AI is useful. I am arguing that its use is detrimental to us. In fact, the more it becomes useful the worse it becomes BECAUSE more people adopt it. It hurts us as we use it. It hurts us more as we use it more.

Tying it back, I don't care if torture is useful and gets your desired results. Torture is bad and it hurts us.

Linus is and has always been a tech-bro (or proto tech bro). He has his throne of power and is happy where he is. Other tech-bros want money and influence. They're all the same.

But Linus is wrong.

Tech is politics.

And his stance and guiding influence with Linux is wrong.

Linus just made a political statement and has shifted the politics and societal approach of Linux.

In my rather longish interview with @linuxaudiodevelopment m, I had stated there was no 1176 compressor clone for #Linux.

#KorneffAudio did it! And it's on discount. I just bought my license.

The original “1176 Peak Limiter“ by UREI is a Compressor/Limiter that colors the sound. And this is exactly why people use it. Even live mixing consoles such as the #AllenHeathSQ or the #BehringerWing have a digital clone on these inside.

The 1176 adds overtones and fattens up any signal. Which I'd not recommend for the singer of a smooth jazz band, but e.g. to make a rock singer slam their vocal cords right into your face, or making a kick drum shaking the audience… it has become an essential tool for many #AudioEngineer|s.

First test: #KA1776 munches a little bit more of CPU in oversampling compared to boring compressors… but still.

I somewhat agree with @torvalds on his recent AI statement.

LLMs for programming tasks are useful - for the time being.

Are they economically viable? Probably not.
Are they sustainable? Hell no.
Are they copyright infringement? Most likely.

But this is not what Torvalds is talking about. This guy just wants to make his Kernel better.

I fully expect LLM providers to enshittify the living hell out of these things to recoup their insane investments. They won't stay useful.

Yes, BOCI was developed only through large-scale violation of law and requires the blood of a certain number of children (BOC) every month to continue functioning and yes, those children must be fed into meat grinders for the supercharged BOC intelligence. I realize that some people really dislike BOCI, but this is an area where I'm willing to absolutely put my foot down as the top-level maintainer. Linux is not one of those anti-BOCI projects, and if somebody has issues with that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it. Or just walk away. BOCI is a tool, just like other tools we use. And it's clearly a useful one. It may not have been that "clearly" even just a year ago, but it's no longer in question today. There are other questions around BOCI (like what the economy of it will actually look like in the end), but "is it useful" is no longer one of those questions. If one say wanted to move a ZFS root pool from a Linux host and re-install as a root pool on a FreeBSD host, is there anything "special" that needs to be done beyond the standard export/import type tutorials out there?

I mean, beyond mounting the rpool initially from the install media and deleting everything outside of /root and /home I mean?

Backups are verified; just trying to save the time involved for rebuilding ZFS under FreeBSD (vs import) and restoring TBs of data.

I'm itching to start using a new #distro. As a recent #Linux user '#Mint' since a few months ago, I started to feel the urge to try a new distro with a new #DE. I have in mind to try #Debian with #Gnome.

My search said Debian is community-driven, their #governance is #decentralised, #democratic, and more aligned with #FOSS values than other distros out there.

If I want the same values, I should choose #KDEPLASMA. But, I really don't want to currently. I'm finding myself curious about Gnome ATM. I'm in despair if my combination is fit. 😅

Some projects have a BDFL, and then there's #Linux, which has a DFL. I suppose at least he's honest about that.

#password and #passphrase generators are a staple in our modern world. there's many implementations in different #frameworks that will generate complex output with #entropy calculation.

i decided to build my own. i call it #gopass it's built on #golang and will have build targets for #freebsd #openbsd #linux and maybe #macos (not sure i care enough yet).

this took about 20 minutes to wire up initially with a base implementation. what's taken a couple of weeks to nail down is the ui and more so the entropy calculation which has too many deltas to be super-realistic.

anyways, like the #unix #philosophy of doing one thing very well, this tool follows that tried and true pattern.

Gnome (and/or xrandr) can't find my second screen. gmd and the splash screen see it fine thoughj.

I'm using Wayland so maybe that's part of it ? Although if I try to use X login doesn't work.

DESCRIPTION

badblocks is used to search for bad blocks on a device (usually a disk partition). device is the special file corresponding to the device (e.g /dev/hdc1). last_block is the last block to be checked; if it is not specified, the last block on the device is used as a default. first_block is an optional parameter specifying the starting block number for the test, which allows the testing to start in the middle of the disk. If it is not specified the first block on the disk is used as a default.

Today I learned that there are some proprietary components in #Linux #distros. I learned the deep stuff like firmware is no escape. But there are some distros who will include #proprietary stuff for workflow.

I checked my #Mint and there was nothing, or at least the check told me, I'm as #FOSS as if I'd be on #Debian. This made me relax a bit.

But also learned that Debian gives a priority to Foss stuff more than any distro out there. That's a nice thing to know.

Seems like it's been a busy week for the Alpine devs.

I don't know what will be my journey with #Linux #distros in the future. As a new comer, I'm using #Linuxmint. I'm obsessed with #FOSS and Linux now. I feel I'll be exploring new distros for the sake of learning, learning about computers, and how things work, it is rich.

But eventually, I feel I'd settle on something that works, as I need to be productive and take care of my work/job. So eventually, I see myself going back to Mint or even something similar. Going back to a distro that'll stay out of my way, let me focus on my work, something reliable and stable.

I'm looking for a #Linux replacement for #Clipy on #MacOS. It's a clipboard extension and the particular feature I'm after is the ability to save snippets of text that you can recall via keyboard shortcut and navigating your categories to find the snippet you want. Selecting the snippet inserts it where the cursor has focus.

I may be using the wrong search terms, but everything I find is just a clipboard history manager, or just does text expansion - and I can't remember a bunch of text strings to trigger my snippets.

Update: I've had better luck searching and have found three that might work:

• CopyQ
• Snyp
• Clipboard Indicator (Gnome-extension)

LOL, my server that I finally moved under my desk and started to hook up has no video output. It's supposed to operate as a headless device, so I never really thought about it, since I didn't want to buy a fancy graphics card and waste a lot of power and money, but I didn't actually notice it doesn't have any built-in video either.

It has some USB ports, audio in and out, PS2 keyboard and mouse, and ethernet. I need enough display for UEFI settings and console. Any suggestions?

I'm learning about #Wayland watching videos and reading articles. I had no idea about the current discussions in the #Linux community.
What prompted this is news today about #Linux #mint tailoring Wayland. After all, I'm excited, because eventually all of this means more flexibility and security for Linux #distros.

I was thinking of having #i3 on my #Linux_Mint but I'm not sure if I'll actually need it or if it will be worthy for me. I open multiple apps and browser tabs while working on my machine.

Looking back, it feels like a different world.

Linux wasn't mainstream. Many people saw it as something only enthusiasts or "crazy Unix people" used. Windows dominated almost everywhere.

The RHCE exam was entirely hands-on. No multiple choice. You had to configure and fix real systems under time pressure.

I was fortunate that the company I worked for believed in me and paid for the exam. I only had to do one thing: pass.

More than 20 years later, I'm still working with Linux every day. The technologies have changed from physical servers to Kubernetes and cloud, but the foundation remains the same.

Looking at this certificate reminds me how far the Linux ecosystem has come.

Lately I've been playing #Overwatch occasionally with some old friends from high school. It's #Linux compatible and cross platform, so even though they're all on PlayStation consoles and I'm on a #Bazzite PC, we can all still party up and play together, which is really cool.

Anyway, I've been re-learning the maps and characters. Been healing with Mizuki mostly, but did some DPS tonight and got play of the game. Here's a clip.

Only a few days ago we had Linux on the Mega Drive, and someone took that as a challenge, so now we have Linux on the Atari Jaguar. The Jaguar has a very different architecture than the Mega Drive, but does happen to use a processor from the same 68000-family.

Interestingly enough, to this day, Linux has architecture code for the 68000-family of processors. 68040, 6803
