My take: instead of pouring money into #Omarchy, those with "elite capital" should put money into all those little developers that created the many small components. It rewards the valuable work and makes open source software more sustainable. A distribution is not good because of its dotfiles, but the software it builds on.

Another thought: AI is taking over the web and content as we know it, the tech bros are now coming to #Linux. Be prepared..

I wanted another computer as a sandbox, I don't really trust VMs, and fucking chip shortages, so to the boneyard it is. I have a disused ASRock Rack J1900D2Y with 8GB of RAM and a PicoPSU that used to be my mail server. Somehow, at some point, I modded the 1U case to mount the rack ears on the back. Annoying. So I dig up the original rack ears which I apparently still have, and try to flip things around, except the drive tray doesn't work the other way around somehow. What. Fine. I have a drill and a file. Sorted. While I'm at it, I splice an INA219 current sensor into the power connection for funzies and hook it up to the BMC's I2C bus. I then root the BMC so I can access it. So then I set about setting up Debian on it on a mirrored pair of Intel enterprise SSDs with encrypted ZFS. The board claims to support UEFI booting. This was determined to be a lie. Whatever. A problem for later. I put GRML (which is my new favorite rescue "CD" since it also has aarch64 builds available) on a flash drive, remove the case from the false drive, solder it to a motherboard header cable, and plug it into the internal USB hub I at some point added to the case. Boots fine, but only as a BIOS drive. I do a manual ZFS setup and debootstrap install, then I fuck around with GRUB for... a while... and eventually get it working on a system partition I've set up mirrored with mdadm (metadata v1.0 - at the end of the partition). Then comes the part where I get ZFSBootMenu working with SSH unlock. ZFSBootMenu is intended to boot via UEFI, but as I said, that doesn't work, but that's what GRUB is - I can chainload. Eventually that works, but I cannot manage to type the passphrase via the janky BMC's Java IPKVM. Fine. I have a file server I already set up SSH unlock with, but that means I'll have to build my own ZFSBootMenu files. After a while, I finally get that working, only to be immediately prompted for the passphrase a second time (on the screen, via the IPKVM, where I keep failing to type it, and it takes abour 90 seconds to check because I cranked up pbkdf2 iterations) when Debian starts. Right, need to bake the key into the encrypted initramfs that ZFSBootMenu loads. More chroot bullshit. I get that working, and Debian shits a brick and drops into a root shell because it can't find /sbin/init. Apparently I needed to install systemd-sysv for that. So I sigh, boot back into the GRML environment, mount the chroot for the fifteenth time, run the apt install, and rebuild the initramfs. I unmount everything, cross my fingers, and type reboot. The janky Java IPKVM refreshes. BIOS POSTs. GRUB chainloads ZFSBootMenu. The SSH unlock actually works perfectly. The boot process finally gets past the init stage, and a beautiful flood of green [ OK ] messages starts cascading down the screen. The login prompt finally appears. I go to type my username, but the BMC drops the connection again. I frantically reload the applet, but instead of the console, the screen glitches out, showing a live camera feed of my street just as a yellow car pulls up outside. I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said 'Fresh' and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought 'Nah, forget it, yo, holmes, to Bel-Air!' I pulled up to the house about seven or eight, and I yelled to the cabbie, 'Yo holmes, smell ya later!' I looked at my domain, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the Heir of Bel-Air.

Things you don't think about before getting a drawing tablet...

I've setup the drawing tablet to the left of my keyboard so I can spin either way depending on what I am doing. My keyboard is on the desk in front/under the right large screen.

My two main screens are on monitor arms from behind and the small screen placed in this orientation gives mouse navigation a smooth, natural usage path.

I'm right handed so this works for me - for now. Perhaps it'll change around the more into it I go.

Oh, and if anyone was wondering - works great with GIMP too!

I was finally motivated to pick up one of these devices after reading David's review.

Just got it working under Alpine Linux - the default driver stuff works as referenced on his website. I'll need to dig into this further to see what customization I want.

The device itself has a great feel, has a feeling of quality. I got a boring black one and it coordinates with my cheap and cheerful keyboard I mentioned the other week. Ha.

Anyway, never had one of these drawing devices before - learning curve inbound I expect.

I'm one of the developers behind Parch Immutable. Been building this for months and today it finally hit public alpha.

Built on bootc, so the whole system ships as a bootable OCI container image. Read-only root, atomic updates, instant rollbacks if anything breaks. No more praying an update doesn't nuke your system. Podman and Distrobox handle anything that's not on Flatpak, so you're never locked out of an app just because the base is immutable.

Native Plasma login replacing SDDM, atomic bootloader updates through bootupd, and the whole image is already trimmed down by several GB. This is early, it's alpha, things will break, but it's real and it's usable today.

If you write about Linux or FOSS, I'd genuinely appreciate a look. And if you just think this is cool, a boost goes a long way for a project like this trying to get in front of the right people.

I recently, as of yesterday, installed FreeBSD on my ThinkPad E14 Gen 4, and will document my journey coming from Debian GNU/Linux over to something that is BSD.

I’ve had some knowledge of FreeBSD from past interactions here on Mastodon, as well as from YouTube and other social media platforms. My ThinkPad also has two ssd drives, so I decided to wipe one of them and install FreeBSD, and using it as my daily driver.

I used to be on kolektiva.social a while back. Not sure how long I’ll stick around on this one either, but I came across bsd.cafe while reading through some FreeBSD documentation and figured I’d join.

J'ai réinstallé 3 ordis sous #Linux ce week-end. Dont un en dual boot (toujours aussi désagréable d'utiliser #windows même pour quelques minutes, et agaçant d'être forcé de créer un compte Microsoft pour installer l'os).
J'ai mis #linuxmint pour 2 laptops (assez classique), et pour un vieux notebook de 10-15 ans avec 1Go de RAM j'ai testé #Q4OS et ça l'a sauvé de la déchetterie. J'avais testé avant #Lubuntu et même #BodhiLinux mais ça ramait à mort. Là ça tourne impec' ça fait plaisir!

I recorded also how launch these: just execute the game binary.

Neverwinter 1 has this issue to crash in the campaign selection screen (as I recorded). I suspect it has something to do about checking online for updated. Sometimes fails, sometimes not, but there is not a constant pattern.

Everything else runs fine, you can play it as on Linux.

Attention developers of KDE, Gnome, Libreoffice, GIMP, and any and all applications that let you use fonts: We need to talk about font management.

i run Kubuntu and when i am editing a document or an image and need to select a font, i am presented with a single scrolling list of all the fonts installed on the system, which is several hundred and includes fonts not only for every language currently used in the world, it also includes languages such as Linear A, which has not been spoken in more than 3500 years! Now it's great that my system can display all these different things, and it's really useful in a multilingual environment such as the social media services i use, but at the same time when i need to find a font to use for my own languages it becomes and overwhelming task! We need to fix this.

What we need is for font selectors to have a way to filter the fonts displayed to you. Preferably a filter by language, though i can see how that would need a lot of work and cooperation from the font package maintainers since the language isn't really a characteristic stored in a font file as i understand. Being able to filter by other characteristics, such as serif/sans serif would also be useful.

i recognize that this is not a small or easy task, but i think it is one that desperately needs a solution. And no, uninstalling fonts is not a solution since that breaks the display of text in social media by people from other countries. Breaking the ability to communicate across international borders is not the solution to managing the list of available fonts.

i really don't know how to get this message to the right people, so i'm throwing it out into the Fediverse in the hope that someone either knows of a good workaround, or can point me in the direction of who to talk to in order to get the conversation about this issue started among the right people.

I've been looking for a #WiFi networks channels analyzer app for the #Linux desktop, like those found on F-Droid (such as WiFiAnalyzer), and couldn't find one on Flathub.

Then, searching more broadly, I discovered that Daniel Nylander, oldtime Swedish translator in #GNOME, has built exactly such an app in recent months, in #Python + GTK4 + libadwaita!
I tried it out (just do "cd src/ && python app.py"), it works well.

I am running Waterfox as browser now, instead of Vivaldi.

I usually have 2 browser profiles open with 5 or 6 tabs each. A few times already something slowed down my computer very much after a while. Yesterday it got so bad that I had to restart the machine. Even playing music from disk stuttered. That is bad. This is Linux.

I'm trying to figure out if it's the browser or something else.

So it seems the faux ai shite has got me at last as the most recent Liquorix Kernel (7.2.whatever) update results in the Kernel Panic message on reboot. I run Mint on the old Toshiba laptop and reverted to Mint's standard 6.8 kernel - all is fine. So I guess the multiple and huge 7.2.x updates of late (due to faux ai detecting hundreds of 'issues') have finally knackered things... surprise surprise... next step is edit grub file... #linux #kernel

Next Saturday at #EuroBSDCon 2026, I'll tell the story of one of the longest nights of my career.

On 10 March 2021, I had just fallen asleep when the alerts started arriving. One server down. Then another. And another.
Different servers, different workloads, one thing in common: the OVHcloud Strasbourg data centre.

Then came the news: SBG2 was on fire.

I had 142 servers there.

The mission for the night was simple to state: bring the critical services back before 8, then recover everything else as quickly as possible.

This talk is about what happened next. The things that worked, the architectural choices that saved us, and especially the ones that failed when we needed them most.

And it's also the story of why that night changed the way I design infrastructure, and why BSD systems became such an important part of it.

The night 142 of my servers went up in the clouds. Physically.

Question – what OS should I install?

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga 11e with only 2 cores, 4 threads, and 4 GB of RAM. I'm looking for OS recommendations that would be suitable for this machine.

I'm considering Debian, possibly as a command-line installation, to see if I could manage without a GUI. I've also thought about something more exotic like OpenBSD. Regardless, I'd mainly like to use this machine as a portable typewriter. Importantly, I need TTS (text-to-speech) because of my personal accessibility needs—a screen reader is essential.

I enjoy experimenting with distros and learning through hands-on experience.

Any advise and tips are welcome!

Latest thoughts on mobile devices...

* Done with Android. Google has killed any cachet it had with their recent developer registration and side loading BS. I won't waste any more time on Android messing around with embedded stuff for my projects.

* iOS phone that I currently own (13) will be my last. Apple is just as bad as Google, will leave this platform also, even if for the last 4-5 years it was a sort of pseudo-privacy respecting mobile safe space. It was all BS and is about to get worse.

* I really haven't used phone apps beyond Firefox (and now Waterfox and Librewolf since Firefox turned) in the set 10 years or so. Won't miss anything from this perspective. I've never trusted the platforms with my payment systems so I won't miss "tap phone to pay" either. CarPlay/AAuto is convenient but a huge privacy leak.

* My next phone will be something that takes calls/sms and can create a hotspot and does effectively nothing else; a decent camera that doesn't have AI BS ruining the images would be nice. Device suggestions appreciated.

* I'll probably start researching small, flip convertible, touchscreen laptops that can act as a tablet and pair it with the phone. The device needs to be able to run Linux and/or BSD (of course). The older Lenovo Tab 11 I have now is serviceable in the meantime until I find a decent lightweight convertible.

* Would consider a Linux phone but I don't care enough about this segment to put up with being a beta/gamma tester. Also, lot of money for an uneven and potentially bad experience.

* If we consider new cars a mobile device <wat!?> then I'm done with them as well. So much so that I recently bought a 2000 Volvo S70 5spd for my wife as a winter beater. No mobile telemetry there - unlike my son's new Toyota GR86.

* While navigating all this, boycotting U.S. tech/manufacturers.

* There's no fun/joy in any of this stuff any more. #RantyMcRantFace

Pretty tall order. Makes the further case for throwing the phone into the crusher and migrating from "digital man" to "analog man" and fleeing into the woods/workshop. Ha.

Citrix Workspace is one of those applications I need, but do not want to adopt.

So I put its official Debian package in a disposable rootless Podman container on Fedora. X11, PipeWire, GPU and webcam support go in. Citrix-shaped filesystem clutter stays out.

It is a packaging boundary, not a security sandbox, and that distinction matters.

I've been using Chimera Linux for some time now, and it's great. (The maintainer of it is a bit of a strange one, but hey-ho).

Chimera Linux is the Linux based on musl using the freebsd userspace. (This isn't anything new, Debian had an attempt at this with Debian-freebsd).

@wezm has created Casuarina which is essentially Chimera Linux with glibc rather than musl.

The Debian vote on LLM slop AI Code in the project is interesting

The Debian developers have voted on the project's stance regarding content generated by large language models (LLMs). There were eight proposals put forward on the topic of whether to allow LLM-generated content to be included in Debian, ranging from banning all LLM contributions to accepting all AI/LLM contributions. The result of the vote was that option 5 (also called option E) was selected: "Responsible Use of Generative AI", which is summarized as: "Debian neither endorses nor prohibits the use of generative AI tools in the development, maintenance, or documentation of software, packaging, documentation, and other media published within the Debian Project."

Debian Project Leader Lucas Nussbaum expressed regret on the results of the vote, writing: "On a very personal note, I regret that the winning option does not acknowledge all the legitimate concerns around AI: environmental impact, copyright and licensing uncertainty, the health of Free Software communities, and the strain of aggressive scraping on the open web."

At least one developer has left the project in protest following the vote. Antoine Le Gonidec wrote, in part: "I can not support the current decision of Debian about LLM use, and am no longer willing to be seen as a part of Debian under these new rules. Pretending to have a 'neutral stance' when faced with fascism is not neutrality, it's active collaboration.... You can replace me with some agentic AI anyway, so do not even try to pretend you're going to miss me."

So iPadOS is the "stinker": it can initiate video calls, but not receive them. It's right up to date: v2.59.1

No stun/turn problems on my Deltachat server!

A while ago I had my old laptop upgraded with a big SSD and Linux, as a spare (by someone else).

Since then, I have forgotten what the password was when it was set up.

Is there an easy way to get around that, or can Linux just be reinstalled without the current password?

There is nothing on it that needs to be saved.

CERN is dropping #RHELL for #Debian. All 2200+ systems by the end of the year.

The reason being is that the "-march=x86-64-v2" compiler flag default as "forced obsolescence" for old hardware.

It's not without headaches, mostly due to "the lack of standard tooling for automated building and publishing of packages - a lot of gaps in the official tooling. There are also a number of tools not supporting multiple versions of the same packages."

✅️ I am currently in my 20th year in education and over the years I've worked in both secondary and college. I've been a sysadmin longer, having started at the NM Coalition for Literacy in 2000 while finishing college on the "long plan." I pivoted in 2018 back to the private sector and then back again to education in 2022. I've maintained this side company/DBA, Haack's Networking, throughout the entirety and I still have clients to this day that I began with in the early 2000s.

✍️ I've always been struck by the prohibitive cost of software. As a young kid, I remember my father purchased me MetroWorks CodeWarrior for learning C for my LC475 68K mac. I read somewhere in 1992 that I should learn C so that's why I asked for it. Over those next few months, it's hard to explain the frustration I felt at trying to keep the abstractions separated. Open firmware, vs. mac's OS at that time, vs., the IDE and C I was supposed to be learning. It helped at disambiguating abstractions, but was useless at teaching me C. I still suck at C. The package was pretty costly nevertheless.

📻️ While in my early days as a sysadmin, I remember the Adobe suites, Microsoft suites, etc., that we were obligated to keep up to date and purchase for our non-profit. We also had tons of macs, 5 laser printers, early flat panel displays, an early NAS, and a hard firewall (Sonic something). It was not sustainable for this non-profit whatsoever. After the prior Director left - who I still consider a mentor and friend to this day - others took over who made an effort to reduce spending and keep the tech lifts in line with reality. It was slow and painful, but/and I learned that costly is not better.

Update your software on all your platforms regularly

This is the golden rule.

• We often do it in a work environment and get paid for that
• We do it for ourselves because it is good for our devices.
• We are careful doing it on our devices which can be bricked remotely by the factory (TV's treadmills trainers)
• We install piehole and other ad blackholes to protect our devices from pesky ads
• There are so many repositories to follow
• Auto updates are stupid, IMHO, even for workstations
• On servers with PHP, we need manual granular tested updates, if we used PHP (old version) because we are slow to implement PHP (new major version)

Big corporations always ruin things, because they prioritise making fast money over anything, even if stomping on others, whether people or the environment or you name it.

AI companies shouldn't have scrapped the internet from the beginning. If AI as a technology was monitored to grow ethically, we wouldn't be upset now in the FOSS community.

AI models wouldn't have the immense powers they have now, because they wouldn't have stolen all humanity's work. But we always have slow government and parliaments that will act years after the disaster. Even then, big tech lobbying and corrupt money will shut them or slow them strongly.

If AI models were trained on public domain stuff, consent, and experiments with consenting parties, it would have been ethical, along with democratising and decentralising them from the first place. I worry we're heading to a global dictatorship that's in the hand of not the 'elite' as in numbered groups of people, anymore, but in the hands of three or four individuals controlling everything.
