Looks like in #Ubuntu #Linux 24.04:
-- #PAM pam_nologin.so still honours both /var/run/nologin (sic) and /etc/nologin by default; but
-- #systemd `/lib/systemd/systemd-user-sessions start' removes only /run/nologin, not /etc/nologin
So if you create /etc/nologin and reboot, users still cannot log in.

pam_nologin(8) tells the truth. systemd-user-sessions(8) mentions only /run/nologin, even in Ubuntu 22.04 where /etc/nologin is removed; I clued in by running strings on the 24.04 and 22.04 binaries.

It looks like someone reported removing /etc/nologin as a bug, and that was accepted and systemd `fixed.'

I guess I can see the desired to have a `no user logins' flag that persists over reboots, but that is not what /etc/nologin has been for decades. They should have made a new file rather than changing the meaning of the existing one.

No, who am I fooling? systemd is not about compatibility or keeping systems working in a consistent way. systemd is about chaos.

Sometimes I think we should start using self-generated change-id for patch series[1] and individual patches, which b4 and maintainer scripts then could convert to "Link:" tags that use lore to find the complete history of a patch.

But I guess that would be a really hard sell.

[1] might be nice for stable maintenance as well, as that would allow "this patch was part of a series" lookups, as it might depend on earlier patches from the same series

Les drivers nvidia sont gérés, mes 3 ecrans marchent, Diskstation et #Steam aussi.

Au bout de quelques minutes dans un jeu sous #Proton, l'image freeze définitivement. Le son continue et je peux faire alt-tab vers mon bureau où tout va bien. Je n'ai pas l'impression que ce soit un problème de ressources. J'ai le même problème avec Satisfactory et Hitman Absolution.
Je ne sais même pas où trouver des logs qui mettraient sur la bonne piste.

Hello, oh Fediverse! I'm hoping someone can share some of their wisdom with me.

At some point, the meaning of SUID (at least for Linux, or some distributions of it) changed subtly. In, for example, RHEL 7 and earlier, a SUID process could access things belonging to its original owner - it gained the privs of the new user, but that wasn't exclusive. RHEL 8 and later, a SUID process no longer has access to the privs of the user that launched the SUID binary. In recent Debian and FreeBSD the SUID process doesn't have access to its old user, but I haven't got older versions around to compare.

Is there a backstory or some flag day where this behaviour changed that anyone can remember?

Hosting your own website Brandon Rohrer Creating a web page is only the beginning. The business of sharing it with the world has a lot of moving parts and a lot of choke points. If an ISP decides to stop traffic to your website or if your hosting platform goes bankrupt there isn't a lot you can do about it. But what you can do is have a solid Plan B — being ready to spin up another copy of your website on another server. A server that you control, or at least a server of your choosing. This guide shows one way to do set up your own hosting. It's not the only way or even the best way. But it is at least a path through the desert. @baloo If this is for someone used to Windows, my suggestion would probably be Mint.

If they are willing to learn some differences (seems a reasonable guess given that you've been asked to do this), and want something which will work stably for years with minimal work once set up but may require slightly more work during the installation and *initial* configuration process, then Debian. Trixie is just out (released a few weeks ago) and is quite up to date.

Si je fais un df -h, cette taille c'est celle de tmpfs (un ramdisk?), monté sur /dev/shm

Here's a #ShellScripting puzzle. Suppose you have a shell script run with the "-e" flag, i.e., it's supposed to exit immediately if a command exits with a non-zero exit status. But there's one particular command you want to capture the exit status of so you can check if it's a particular failure code and ignore it if so. What's the cleanest way to do that?

My HDTV connected as a monitor to my desktop PC. On the screen is Slackware Linux in console mode with Tmux running a two panes, side by side. Left pane is running slackpkg+ updates and upgrades. Right pane is SSH'd to tilde.institute and running a Tmux session there, split into two panes, top and bottom. Bottom pane is showing Irssi in an IRC channel. Top pane is SSH'd to SDF and running another Tmux session there, and focused on the Tmux window where the list of BBOARD boards is shown.

Is there a nice, POSIX-compatible(!) way to use the smaller (or larger) value of two integers in a shell expression(!)?

Something like

I know that I can use `if` and `test -lt` or something, but those are statements.

My use case is this: I'm calling an external command from #NeoMutt, and NeoMutt sets $COLUMNS to the width of the terminal. However, I want to limit it to 80 or lower.

Linux Mint boot forces a fsckd check of my Root (/dev/sda2) partition every boot.

Thanks to some lovely folk I stopped the other message and subsequent check.

What is fsckd in comparison to fsck? How do I stop it running at every boot? Could it be forced by an error on my /Home partition (/dev/sda3)?

Any idea why this is suddenly happening and how to stop it would be ever so gratefully received.

TIL: In #Linux, when you "switch user" (in Wayland or X11), the second user opens up a separate session which you can directly switch to using the Ctrl-Alt-F-keys without re-authenticating, as long as the user-specific sessions aren't locked.

In Debian 13 #GNOME, the first user session is Ctrl-Alt-F2 and the second user is on Ctrl-Alt-F3.

This way, you can, e.g., separate personal and business setup/user/tasks. 👍

I'm going to invest some effort in setting up my work/personal setup that way. 🤓

I have a Hobie Outback pedal-powered kayak, which takes me back to my past as a Sea Scout on the Swan. I enjoy playing with #lego, #cooking, #preserving, and many, many other things.

I am #teetotal (and have been all my life) but love making mixed drinks, and have an extensive #zeroproof bar.

I am an amateur #photographer without any particular speciality, but I do particularly like taking shots of #birds (especially #raptors ), and other mer-folk. I also enjoy shooting #pinhole B&W, and play with in-camera #cyanotype (about which I have written extensively on my blog) . To round things out, I take quite a few #solargraph images.

Anyone know how to fix this? My #NixOS Laptop over the last 6 months or so has had this issue where #iwlwifi crashes and I have to modprobe it out and back in to fix my wifi. The module is a Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 73) (according to lspci)

However, I really want to be able to unlock my #KeePass database on both #Linux and #Android with it.
The NitroKey 3 supports the proprietary YubiKey challenge-response protocol, but neither #KeePassDX + #ykDroid nor #KeePass2Android work with NitroKeys. (#KeePassXC on desktop does, though!)

Thinking about replacing my Windows 11 Pro system, used mainly for gaming (Steam), with a Linux install. Most if not all my games should run smoothly on Steam for Linux.

Given that Ubuntu is a no-go and that I’m not a fan of Debian, what would be your advice about distro?

bon, le seul truc qui me freine pour une migration vers #Linux, c'est mon logiciel de #généalogie (utilisé au moins 2012... plus maintenu depuis la mort de son développeur, mais toujours vaillant, quoi qu'avec un fichier de près de 20 000 individus ça rame par moment)... allez je prends mon courage à 2 mains pour tout basculer sur #Gramps, corriger tout ce qui passe pas (arg, les lieux..) puis zou, migration #Linux

Hello people! I've been on the Fediverse for couple of years now, so here's my re-#introduction

I'm Ari, better known by my tag APZ and this is my #pinball repair, #arcade and #retrogaming account. I mostly post about playing and repairing pinball machines, but I also work on #retrocomputing with all the classics.

An IT guy by day, I moonlight as a pinball arcade owner here in #finland with my partner @quester. This is purely a hobby of mine, I do this to keep my sanity and to keep pinball alive for the next generations of players. At the moment I own a bit over 30 pinball machines from 70s to 2020s.

A lot of what I do involves #electronics, #CAD for now obsolete parts and #3dprinting and tabletop #cnc to recreate them.

I love to #travel, usually to meet like-minded arcade collectors. I have a strong preference to #repair stuff instead of throwing it away. I'm a #linux user since mid-90s, having been part of #foss movement most of my life. I also edit arcade related videos.
