Ok, so super strange thing has been happening with #Firefox and this computer.

Already in two different OSes (#AlpineLinux and #Devuan Linux), Firefox crashes (that "Gah your tab crashed!" message, or downright segfaults to death) less than 50 seconds after opening. And it's *any* firefox I can pull off - standalone Linux version, AppImage, Distro Repo, Mozilla Repo, you name it. They *all* crash randomly between 5 to 50 or so seconds after opening.

Other browsers seem to be working correctly, as is every other application installed here. Why TF is only the browser doing this?!

This is super frustrating, and makes me feel that there must be some hardware problem with this PC. Faulty RAM, perhaps? Wonder if there's anything I can do to save it (the PC, that is)

I'm about to go help someone move from Windows to Linux, and this person is not particularly tech savvy. And it just occurred to me that I can't really think of good distros to demo that showcase GNOME or KDE. The main "newbie friendly" distributions I have now are Linux Mint, and Pop! OS... But when it comes to the "big 2" desktops, I can't think of any that I feel great about:

• Fedora (my own desktop OS) and its atomic versions: Great OS, but having to use RPM Fusion for hardware video acceleration disqualifies it because that's always a pain point during upgrades.
• Ubuntu: I'll use this to showcase GNOME, but I'm not particularly happy with the current direction of the project, especially with their latest focus on AI. And considering that the person I'm helping wants to get away from copilot and AI, I doubt she will enjoy that either.
• Debian: Haven't used this on a desktop in forever, and never considered this very newbie friendly.
• SUSE: never made me super comfy, so why would a beginner?
• Bazzite: too gaming focused, but the experience is great for the rest.
• Aurora/Bluefin: Never used it and don't know anyone who has, so I'm not going to experiment on someone who hasn't used linux before.

So for now, I'm choosing TuxedoOS for KDE, and Ubuntu for GNOME, but I can't say I'm truly happy with either of those choices for this use case.

Anyone else having issues connecting to the Debian wiki? I get the initial anti AI screen or whatever it is and then it gives me a "Forbidden" page.

Accessing via VPN works but from my normal Bell CGNAT IP does not. It's not a 403, just a text pages saying Forbidden.

I did the non-standard install thing with Solus (root on btrfs, add a mirror after the fact).

Looks like Friday's set of patches and new kernel (7.0) broke the boot. Reverting to 6.8 is also broken.

I've been futzing with it on and off for the last couple of hours. About to give up and repave with a different distro me thinks. Shame.

I'm planning a project to build a Linux laptop. Likely Mint (Cinnamon I think?) Linux on a 2016 Dell Precision machine with an i7 CPU, 32GB RAM and an MXM 4GB GTX965M Nvidia card (ie decent specification). A few questions for planning -

1) Can I run Win10 apps eg WhatsApp Desktop under Linux?

2) Are there any limitations if I want to run a dual boot into both Linux Mint AND Win10? I am thinking about the boot-mode here eg Legacy vs UEFI. No I won't be moving to Win11 ever I hope.

3) Anyone with experience/knowledge of running Linux with Nvidia Optimus (which toggles between the integrated Intel GPU and the Nvidia GPU especially for regular use vs gaming)?

All thoughts and advice appreciated in advance!

Kleiner Tipp für alle, die ihre Bash-History lieben: Mit `Ctrl+R` rückwärts durch die History suchen. Nochmal `Ctrl+R` drücken springt zum nächsten Treffer. Mit `Ctrl+G` raus ohne Befehl auszuführen.

Spart mehr Lebenszeit als man denkt – besonders bei diesen 47-Zeichen-ffmpeg-Befehlen, die man sich nie merken kann. 😅

Recently I got asked about my @BoxyBSD@bsd.cafe project, which offers free VPS instances of vary #BSD based systems for learning and educational purposes and I'm happy to share that this projects remains available. Several things could finally be clarified to continue this service to make sure people can learn and practice on real #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD systems to #RUNBSD. Also, BoxyBSD starts moving over to #Sylve on #bhyve.

But not only that! If you use #Linux and are using a #Debian or #Ubuntu based distro, one thing I would recommend for installing .deb files (ones you download from outside your repos), is to install "gdebi" and use that to open and install your .deb packages instead of your "Software Center". Reason being, "gdebi", before it actually installs anything, lets you browse the contents of the package, read the contents of control files like postinst, etc. to make sure it isn't doing anything shady.

Really asking for a "Pray tell us", given that nobody actually bothered disclosing the problem to downstreams and that the commit message was hiding it.

Either way, apparently the great LLM-backed patch backporting process that #NVidia is so proud of doesn't really work. Upstream doesn't really care about #LTS branches, and they should be considered insecure by default.

Pünktlich zum #diday läuft jetzt der Gaming PC von @Ruhn auf @CachyOS #kde mit v4 Optimierung.

Steam und der @heroiclauncher laufen schon mal gut. Ein paar Probleme gab es mit der 2. internen SSD. Da waren noch die Ownership neu zu setzen sowie in der fstab der exec Eintrag.

Wir mussten auch das chaotic-aur einbinden, da wichtige Entwicklertools wie Gitkraken und Unityhub nicht im CachyOS Repo zu finden waren.

Heute noch die restlichen Dinge installieren und das ganze Klein Klein konfigurieren.

Hab' die Woche mein Fedora-Linux mit KDE-Oberfläche auf eine neue Version upgegradet.

Button klicken, Download abwarten, neustarten, Paketinstallation abwarten, fertig. Hat keine 20 Minuten gedauert.

Keine Probleme mit TPM, kein neuer KI-Assistent, den ich nicht will, kein Online-Zwang, nix.

Sogar mein Desktop sah noch genau so aus wie vor dem Upgrade.

Weiß echt nicht, warum man sich den Stress mit Windows geben sollte... 🤷‍♂️

Il y a plein d'interaction à la con entre les DLL/runtimes Windows.
Exemple: Si j'installe le vieux "Microsoft Media Foundation" (des composants média qui datent de Vista), ça fait planter "Journey to the savage planet" (un jeu sorti en 2021). 😒
Je vais peut-être revenir à une version avec juste les runtimes vraiment nécessaires (vcrun2026,xna40,dotnet4,openal,physx,dxvk,vkd3d) et éliminer les vieux trucs.

Finally got around to checking out Little Snitch for Linux. It might be ~20 years since the last time ran it (Leopard! Tiger!).

Worth a look if you haven't checked it out yet.

Web interface is cool, especially for simplified look at what hosts are experiencing.

Not packaged for Solus or Alpine but the static musl binaries linked on the download page work fine.

It works, but like lilo back in the '90s. Actually, that's probably not fair to lilo.

Now I understand why most distros configure it to not display and make you press/hold space to access the menu at boot time. The less we see it the better.

It's original intent was well-meaning: Prevent apps from messing with user defaults, like the browser or installing unwanted extensions or toolbars.

Linux doesn't have any of this, AFAIK. Malicious software could change all sorts of user defaults. This could become a real problem with its growing popularity. 🤔

I tried a bit more Linux distro investigation, and I think I just should have listened to @hipsterelectron in the first place.

TL;DR: If you want to run Linux without systemd, with something other than GNOME as a desktop (which is implied if you don't want systemd), and if you're comfortable with using the command line for installation, Alpine Linux is a great choice. The default install has zero systemd.

Yes, it's a command-line install, but it's far easier to install than Gentoo. The core OS install was so fast that I thought it had failed. Once I had that sorted and had installed a few support items, the setup-desktop script installed the whole of KDE and Wayland in a couple of minutes. I rebooted and everything worked. It even got the high DPI screen's resolution right for both KDE and sddm, which literally no other distro I've tried has managed.

A lack of bloat doesn't just make Alpine good for containers, it's also really responsive in general use. (Which is how computers ought to be with modern hardware.)

The package manager is nice. Think APT, but much faster. It automatically keeps a separate record of what you've actually asked to install versus dependencies that were dragged in, for easy automatic bloat removal.

Downsides:

- No proprietary Nvidia driver available, you need to use nouveau, so no CUDA or high performance gaming.
- Documentation (including installation) is scattered in pieces on a wiki.
- A lot less stuff prepackaged for you than Debian. Check https://pkgs.alpinelinux.org/ to see if things you need are available.
- You'll need to get used to some things being different thanks to use of busybox, no sudo, no bash by default, and so on.

My conclusion: Command line user? Try Alpine. Everyone else? Use Debian, and hope they move away from systemd.

I might revise this opinion if things break a lot during regular updates (hello Fedora), time will tell. #AlpineLinux #Linux

Also ich kann Euch nur zu diesem Schritt gratulieren!

Ich bin hier schon lange einen "Schritt weiter" gegangen, und hoste seit mittlerweile 25 Jahren meinen Mailserver für privat und Unternehmen/Beruf selbst, und habe damit absolut keine Probleme.
Seit dieser Zeit arbeite ich sowohl privat als auch im Unternehmen ebenfalls fast ausschliesslich auf #Linux und anderen #OpenSource Produkten.
Angefangen hat es bei mir mit dem Ersatz von MS Office; ich bin um die Jahrtausendwende auf #StarOffice umgestiegen (welches ich davor schon unter #DOS genutzt hatte).

Folgendes: meine alte mobile Laptopfestplatte ist in einen statischen PC gelandet. Die Festplatte soll jetzt ohne Passwortabfrage (ja gewollt!) direkt bei Start gemountet werden.
Auf dem frisch installierten Debian 13.

Eigentlich SOLLTE das gehen, wenn in
/etc/crypttab
die Parameter (wie PW-File) hinterlegt werden
und dann
/etc/fstab
das mounting übernimmt.

Habe aber gelernt, dass in initramfs cryptsetup nie geöffnet wird. Bzw. die Referenz auf /etc/crypttab nie genutzt wird.

FWIW, the Debian backports kernel series has NOT been patched for copyfail yet. At least my hosts are not being offered anything new and the vuln still works when run against the host.

Upgrading the last #Fedora device here to #Fedora44, the device being a HP Stream laptop that I inherited. Only 4 GB of RAM and a 32 GB eMMC, but it works decently with MATE Desktop, especially for getting it for free. ​ #linux

My HP Stream that I inherited which is running Fedora, and now upgrading to Fedora 44 with MATE Desktop. It's at the "Upgrading System; Do not turn off your computer" message with the progress bar preparing to install and "Starting system upgrade. This will take a while" under the progress bar.
