I know I can use OpenSSL or GPG but I think it's better and more confortable to encrypt the full drive...

By any chance, does anyone have experience with getting Linux (the Nix OS distro specifically) to work well with Nvidia gpu’s? I installed Nix Os on my laptop a few months ago and I can not get its Nvidia GPU to co-operate no matter what I seem to do. I know it’s most likely something with the driver setup I just don’t know what. I managed to get it usable but Blender and OBS in particular are really really struggling, and I’m not sure where I’m going wrong 🙃

This seems like a worrying thing for a password manager, and I cannot see anything in documentation / release notes which mentions it - but I might be missing something.

While I consider Debian-Testing with #Gnome my main OS, I found myself mostly using #Mint with Cinnamon and Cinnamenu. Reason being, while Gnome feels more modern, I just don't like using it. The main objectives I have is evaluating FreeBSD to run a #Luanti gameserver. Some sources indicate that FreeBSD has better networking and IO management than #Linux. So this case might apply.

I wish #Linux (and #FreeBSD) had a device /dev/memfd that, when opened, actually gives you a fresh memfd.

Then you could use memfd with shell scripts:

It'd be like using temporary files, except they automatically get deleted when the script terminates, and aren't visible to other processes (so there's no need to securely generate a temporary file name).

D'ailleurs, si on installe une Debian, les choix par défaut conviennent (généralement).
Linux à l'air plus complexe parce qu'une installation inclus l'OS, les drivers, et les applications. Idem pour les mises à jours. C'est bien plus simple qu'avec Windows.

I wonder if back in the early days of #Unix-like OSs, there was opposition to the concept of a package manager.

I can hear the debates echoing in my head already:

• "Package management makes users lazy and less likely to check and audit what they're actually installing. Especially if you end up automatically resolving dependencies and blindly applying updates!"
• "One program should never have that much power over a system. What if the project is taken over? Searching for, downloading, installing and updating software should be the jobs of different, smaller programs according to the Unix philosophy."
• "Distributions should offer their users the choice of multiple package managers, or otherwise we're giving too much power to the maintainer(s) of a single program."
• "Centralised repositories are a terrible idea as they are a single point of failure and it encourages users to blindly trust their authority."
• "All of this nonsense about making computing 'user-friendly' is just going to bring tons of undesirables normies in."

Ok, I think I've got this display card under control - or so it seems. It hasn't crashed since Wednesday.

I guess this is a combo AMD RDNA3 Navi23 and KDE Plasma (+ Wayland?) bug...

I backed out all my Linux kernel command line switches for AMD GPUs and it crashed to green screen in less than a half hour. So, re-adding them stopped that from happening.

And then the cursor thing is fixed <?!> by adding

Currently this is what is set:

From a user experience point of view I don't see any difference with that software cursor setting.

There's another wrinkle to this that might be a factor but I can't really test around it currently. This is a multi-head machine and one screen is connected via HDMI and one is DP.

Perhaps this wouldn't be a problem if both screens were connected via the same type of connector.

Both screens are set to the same refresh frequency. But, in the display control app one reads back at 60.00 Hz while the other is 60.000 Hz. Minor thing right? But in trying to make this work I've seen references to AMD GPU weirdness in multi-head configurations where the refresh rates were different between screens. Red herring perhaps.

Anyway, don't know if there are (or will be) any people trying to make a RX 5800 XT GPU behave under Linux but this seems to be what worked for me and my dual head setup. I'll update if anything changes.

Today, the Linuxulator did its job, and it did it very well.
A client is experimenting with moving from Docker to FreeBSD and jails, and they seem very happy with it so far.
The issue is that part of their build process - as so often happens - relies on Node dependencies that only compile on Linux, macOS, etc., but not on FreeBSD, due to a missing binary that isn't provided for it. Currently, they build on their local machines and push the output to the server, but sometimes they need to make quick changes on the fly.

So, I set up a Linux jail (Ubuntu) using BastilleBSD, installed the dependencies, set up a bind mount, and granted them access to the jail. The result: now they can compile right from there too, improving their overall workflow.

The Linuxulator - and even more so, illumos's lx zones - are truly remarkable pieces of technology.

I think the most important question is: why does anyone comply with what one incurious, self-centered, and self-important man, Linus Torvalds, says?

Why is that most important? Because Linux does not belong to Linus Torvalds. It belongs to the world. Torvalds only gets to dictate if the people who are best-positioned to take that power from him fail to do so. From where I sit (as an outsider), he should have been removed from the project, or at least have his dictatorial power removed, long ago, and the primary problem is that there is no structure or will to actually do that.

I've had issues with Linux.Pizza's Matrix-server, mainly due to uncontrolled growth of the database. Even thou retention is set do one month, there is still an absurd amount of growth in the database.

I have never encountered this before, not even with thousands of active users.

I do know that other users had this issue before and have been vocal about it.
Is there any solution to this yet?

Jetzt arbeite ich seit etwas über einem Tag mit Niri und Dank Material Shell und ich bin begeistert! Ich habe schon immer die Maus nur notwendigerweise benutzt und eher mit der Tastatur gearbeitet. Mit Niri und DMS ist das richtig gut! Endlich ein Tiling Manager der es wirklich auch richtig macht, intuitiv ist und dabei auch noch echt gut aussieht! Und vor allem auch mit meinem 3-Monitor Setup keinerlei Probleme hat!

Guix goes on the Thinkpad.

The graphical (TUI) install process is clear and concise. If you don't like the suggested disk partitioning scheme its straightforward to customize. I didn't feel the need to switch to a console to do a manual install.

Disk layout is a small ESP partition, with the rest going to a LUKS encrypted root partition. Kernel 'linux-libre' supports the Intel ethernet without binary blobs, and I've ordered a AR9271 USB wifi adapter to keep things libre.

Is it weird to have 2 favorite #Linux desktop environments?

I discovered that GNOME on my laptop is nothing short of an amazing Zen. On my desktop with a secondary monitor to the left of the main one, it feels very much less than ideal, but the different layout and interaction model that Cinnamon has the same no-thought-needed interaction.

Also Debian requires more work for gaming than Mint, but they're both equally amazing for different reasons.

Der meiner Meinung nach Interessante dabei ist, dass #Microsoft beim Update von #Windows offenbar automatisch beliebige Hersteller-Software ungefragt am System installiert.

Kann man offenbar mit einer Gruppenrichtlinie abschalten. Allerdings kann ich mir gut vorstellen, dass dadurch einige normale Gerätetreiber usw. dann nicht mehr wunschgemäß geladen werden. 🤷

Sorry, es gibt wirklich kaum noch Argumente für #Windows11 und immer mehr für einen Umstieg auf ein modernen #Linux-System.

Having manually just cleared out almost 50GiB of space between just my uv and pip cache folders, I'm wishing #Linux had a good disk space reclaiming tool like the Windows one that offers to clear out temp folders and downloaded cached updates.
Disk space analyzers exist, and they're fine and dandy, but they don't offer to do the 'right' thing to clear space, just "do you want to trash this folder you may know nothing about?"
I probably won't write one.

Btrfs c'est bien, ça te fais gagner de la place (et pas qu'un peu)(et les Snapshot, mais pas encore testé).

Mais grub et os-prober, il aime pas.
C'est un comble quand même, ça fais des années que le format existe, et Grub ne sait même pas aller chercher dans des sous-volumes les kernel, initramfs et tout le toutim...

Faut faire à la mano, configurer une nouvelle entrée dans /etc/grub.d, pour qu'il veuille bien rajouter ton nouvel OS dans son menu...

J'ai mis une plombe à dépatouiller le truc.

Ich habe #OpenAI #Codex in #ChatGPT heute folgende Admin-Aufgabe gegeben:

Herausfinden, warum eine #SSH-Verbindung zu Server „Orion“ über #autossh und einen lokalen, per #Homebrew installierten #Tor-SOCKS-Proxy nicht funktioniert, während der Zugang über #Tailscale klappt.

„Orion“ als Tailscale Exit Node konfigurieren.

Die Exit-Routen anschliessend auf dem #YunoHost-Server „Andromeda“ über die Konsole der #Headscale-App freigeben.

Codex hat selbstständig die SSH-Konfiguration, Host-Aliase, Portbelegung, Tor-Dienst, Hidden Service und Timeouts überprüft. Gefunden wurden ein fehlender SSH-Alias, ein für Tor zu kurzer Verbindungs-Timeout und ein bereits belegter lokaler Port durch eine andere autossh-Verbindung.

Danach hat Codex die SSH-Konfiguration korrigiert, die Onion-Verbindung erfolgreich getestet, auf „Orion“ die IPv4- und IPv6-Exit-Routen via Tailscale annonciert und sie auf „Andromeda“ direkt in der YunoHost-App-Konsole von Headscale freigegeben. Bestehende Subnet-Routen blieben erhalten.

Dauer: ungefähr 5 Minuten, inklusive Diagnose, Änderungen und abschliessender Verifikation.

Schon beeindruckend, wie weit agentisches Arbeiten mit OpenAI, Codex und ChatGPT inzwischen geht: nicht nur Kommandos vorschlagen, sondern eine mehrstufige Infrastrukturaufgabe nachvollziehbar untersuchen und ausführen.
