Over the weekend, a super-cool thing happened. @flathub finally approved/published my first ever Linux app, Ratio! And it’s my first ever FOSS app.

Some of you may know that I’ve had a macOS version published for a while now. It’s a WCAG color contrast checker for accessibility.

I’ve been working on the Linux version for months. I’ve had to learn as I go. It was really hard. It’s a GTK 4 native app, so it should work across the board.

Seems like #Linux⁠'s legendarily huge variety of desktop environments collapses pretty fast if your screen setup is anything other than plain old single-screen 96dpi.

I guess because, for the vast majority of Linux's existence, we were all using plain old single-screen 96dpi or *maybe* two 96dpi screens. The mixed 1.5×/1× configuration I'm using became common only recently, and the old stuff isn't made for this.

Using Debian *and* Fedora means I have no idea anymore how to add a user to a group

My daughter who has schizophrenia and some paranoia bought an old and beat up Dell 960 desktop computer without a hard drive on eBay. She wants a legacy computer because she thinks it is more secure than a newer computer and it is pointless to try convincing her otherwise. After reseating the two loose memory cards, I was able to successfully boot up Linux Mint Cinnamon from a USB drive as shown in the attached image. I can access the Linux Mint menu using the Windows key, but for some reason a USB mouse is not working. I am going to try using a dedicated mouse port instead to see if that works.

I have attached a photo of two unused cables that I assume are for the missing hard drive. Am I wrong? One of the cables is damaged and I may have to replace it. I am obviously not a hardware guy and am just stumbling my way through this. If I buy a 3.5 Dell SATA hard drive, can I expect it to plug and play (if I replace the damaged cable)? Or, is it more complicated than that?

PSA: you want to report a #LinuxKernel regression you encountered when switching from a distribution's #kernel to a newer one that is vanilla or close to it?

Then you want to check if a vanilla build of the #Linux version the working distro's #kernel is based on actually works, as the latter might only work due to some modification the downstream vendor applied.

This is one reason[1] why https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/verify-bugs-and-bisect-regressions.html (screenshotted) tells you to do that. A recent discussion (https://lore.kernel.org/all/20260925115041.GX106095@black.igk.intel.com/ ) shows that this is not a theoretical precaution: something worked with Ubuntu's kernel but not with a vanilla build from the same series because Canonical applied a patch that one of the upstream developers called a "horrible hack that is never going to be applied [upsteam]".

[1] The other reason: "verify if the .config localmodconfig created actually creates a working kernel, as you otherwise will only start to suspect problems in that area midway through the bisection – and by that point will have wasted a lot of time".

I know Elementary/Pantheon have said they won't.

EDIT 1: the problem is made more complex by the fact that my laptop has an Nvidia card, and if I understand correctly, NetBSD (the anti-AI BSD) doesn't support Nvidia. I'm honestly keeping an eye on Redox OS.

So, my move to a BSD isn't going as quickly as I would like, and I wanted to get off of Debian since the whole vote to go pro-AI debacle. I figured moving to a Linux distribution that has a very strong anti-AI policy would be the right choice until I can get a BSD installed properly on my desktop or extra laptop. More than a year ago, I tried @elementary. It's an awesome project but I could never get my workflow working with the desktop environment. Most definitely not the fault of Elementary. I just have a weird workflow. Earlier today, I decided to give the latest release another try. I'm going to keep it on here and actually work with the desktop environment, instead of giving up after a day.

The project is staunchly anti-AI. And that is important to me. I know the Linux kernel is tainted but unless we want to fork the kernel from a version prior to Torvalds allowing the use of AI, we're just going to have to deal with it. I don't like it, but I'm no developer and who in the world would want to take on a forked project as big as the Linux kernel? Yikes!

Anyway, I'm really liking how I have Elementary setup on my ThinkPad T14 and I'm going to keep using it for now. Who knows? It might keep me on Linux with one piece of my hardware even after moving to BSD.

No time to play with CoW today but did log back into the machine after running around on my main box (Plasma) all day.

Swaylock needs some themeing but once in and seeing the partially modified twm I was working on yesterday it gave me a big smile. Simple and sharp!

Anyway, still going to pick at this in the background. Need to figure out how to manage minimized apps and launching and stuff using waybar, waybar-wlr-taskbar, cowiconbox, sway*, and friends.

So customizable! You can make your own desktop paradigms for the most part. I love it! Ha.

Is there a way to create animations? Something like a Picom add-on but for Wayland?

I installed Budgie (iirc 10.10.2) on my test box just to have a look - launching from sddm gives a login loop so I'll ignore that for now as that's more time to debug than I'm willing to invest ATM.

I guess I hadn't looked at photos since migrating to Alpine Linux lately.

Does anyone have HEIC (i.e. Apple) formatted images working correctly under Alpine?

I've installed libheif, kimageformats and anything remotely libheif related in the repo but Gwenview still doesn't display HEIC images. Neither does Shotwell.

I installed Ristretto to compare and it also doesn't display HEIC images.

GIMP works as does Darktable.

Dolphin displays the thumbnails properly but the preview pane doesn't work.

Ideas? Kinda pulling my hair out and out of options.

I've been getting into #Incus lately as a replacement for #Proxmox and I have to say it is incredibly impressive.

Super fast, super-low resources, has a mature OCI container support, and works on any major #Linux distro.

Very cool piece of software!

@rachel I haven't researched this carefully, but it is possible that people that use a BSD system (and maybe even MacOS?) may have a rather different answer than us #Linux users. They trace their code tree back further, but it was a reall mess of UCB and AT&T code being added and ripped out over time, so it may take quite some work to figure out how far back it goes.

On the Windows side, I doubt any pre-NT (1993) code survives, and even that may be iffy.

@overeducatedredneck @chadmccullough @admin @netbsd It's pretty easy setting up a #NetBSD Xen dom0 with just two packages needing adding (plus the auto-installed dependencies). You can then add as many domUs as you want if you want full privilege separation. PVH is probably best. You can use a ZFS dataset per VM. It's also easy enough to add #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD and #Linux domUs

I've been fussing around with Labwc a bit. The out of the box Labwc config on Alpine is very minimal. Labwc uses Openbox themes, but before I go down that rabbit hole I want to explore CoW.

Following the build instructions "bouncing ball" on both the river and CoW Codeberg pages resulted in success with CoW selectable and launch-able in sddm with zero dramas.

Clicking on the empty desktop and getting the minimalist CoW (fvwm!) menu to appear for the first time was a bit of a comfy old shoe moment. Ha.

Now the fun, hard, and time consuming part: making CoW look the way I want it to look and selecting tools to flesh out the rest of the desktop.

I did go looking for some of my old fvwm configs in my code repo but I guess I never saved my desktop configs - just my carputer stuff. 2008 was a long time ago. Oh well.

🚨 **CVE-2026-80521: Linux kernel container escape**

A public exploit chains an **AF_UNIX socket garbage-collector use-after-free** into host-level code execution from an unprivileged container.

The bug involves a race in the SCC garbage collector that leaves a freed `unix_vertex` reachable through a stale `scc_entry` pointer.

The PoC reportedly works against Ubuntu 26.04 and defeats several kernel hardening mechanisms.

Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04 and 26.04 are currently listed as affected in the article's September 23 update.

Has anyone had success improving microphone sound quality, background noise reduction in particular, on #Linux?

I've tried Easy Effects (input) profiles, Noise Torch, HushMic, using my mobile phone with AndroidMic… every time, my colleagues just end up telling me the sound is terrible.

It feels stupid that a laptop with 32GB of RAM and a powerful processor wouldn't be able to apply the same sort of DSP on mic input than a headset with a relatively low-powered chipset in it.

ok, fixed the large table issue! :)

cell reuse was only part of the problem... the main thing was that SQLite LIKE returns case insensitive matches! comparing on lowercase and then applying the highlight fixed it completely.

index column width is stable now too and moved the search entry back to the header bar.

Vor dem Amtsgericht Frankfurt am Main aber ging es weniger um Kleinkunst als um Blutalkohol. Ein Autofahrer war nachts in Hofheim mit 1,32 Promille kontrolliert worden. Getrunken habe er nichts, beteuerte er. Schuld seien vielmehr Pralinen, tisch- tennisballgroß und alkoholisch offenbar von erheblichem Ehrgeiz. Die Fahrerlaubnis war fort, die Pointe blieb: Wer Alkohol als Praline tarnt, sollte nicht erwarten, dass das Strafrecht ihn als Naschkatze behandelt."

🧵 So I got this #Focusrite #Saffire Pro24 for 18,50€, used from Ebay. It's a #Firewire #AudioInterface.

I don't have much time now but here's a first quick test… I plugged it into the crazy Apple adapter chain from Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3, and plugged the latter into my good old Lenovo t470.

The interface gets bus-powered instantly, and #Pipewire can be set to Pro Audio mode… good^Wcumbersome old #ffadoMixer allows to set all options and internal monitor mix when run as root (I should solved this).

So sad that #Linux will also lose Firewire support at some point. This devices feels like a quality device. It even has a power switch.

For high-end situations, I have an #RME #Fireface 400 still, but this is about getting 6 analog, balanced outputs that aren't shitty for cheap. And if further testing should show this works reliably, it's really an inexpensive solution (if you have the firewire adapters or a Firewire interface card already).

Quatre nouveaux « exploits » permettant de passer en root avec un compte local sont sortis pour le noyau Linux. Cela concerne toutes les versions de Debian encore supportées.
