Use `journalctl -f -u servicename` for real-time service logs. The `-u` targets specific service units, `-f` follows live output. Add `-p err` for errors only.

Interesting article from The Register on Friday about alternative kernels. As per the article, the topic of other kernels surface again after #Linux developers continue to clash over certain tech like Rust, SystemD, and bcachefs.
The three kernels discussed are Managarm, Asterinas, and Xous. Until stumbling across this article today, I've not heard of any of them. I guess I have some reading ahead of me. The article also mentioned the idea of disgruntled devs possibly forking the Linux kernel - a fascinating and probably confusing experience for a lot of people.
Would certainly be an interesting thought experiment, now giving a valid reason to explicitly list the userland and kernel with which OS you happen to be using, ie Debian GNU/Fork-this, openSUSE GNU/Linux, Gentoo GNU/Asterinas, or whatever.
It also might just be easier and more straightfoward to use #FreeBSD instead. 🤷♂️

I have finally moved over to Linux as my primary platform. In many ways it is like coming home, as I loved working on UNIX machines in the past. Of course, I have been using Linux as a secondary OS for a long time, but I finally made the switch. Microsoft cancelling Windows 10 and the direction Windows 11 is going was just too much for me.
@ruario helped the transition, by making it easy for me to work with multiple concurrent @Vivaldi installs.
That is a must for me as I test a lot of builds at the same time.
I've finally been brainwashed by GNOME after all these years and got rid of my system tray extension- relying on apps that support background services and keeping those that don't in another workspace.
Forcing myself for a few days to work with this flow, and I think its clicking what they are going for with no systray support, and I think I prefer it now. So clean. Less distractions.

🙅 Goodbye Forever OPNsense 🙅
It displeases me to finally and heartily say GTFO to OPNsense; to abandon a solid decade of use.
I've had it on everything from embedded arm64 experiments to baremetal with ranges of 10, 25, 40, and 100GbE NICs. I've used all of the core features, built complex global service meshes, H/A systems, etc. I used to love it. I used to pay for it.
OPNsense was great, until it wasn't (starting around the time they axed their use of HardenedBSD), and with each release it gets more convoluted, out of date, tedious to debug, and generally a source of disappointment. The command line controls are anemic, inconsistent, and the lack of unified and useful system state tracking is a source of sailor level obscenities. Also, dear gods get rid of XML configs, no one can parse it without going blind! What is this, SOAP and XML-RPC era nonsense, really? 😠
I do not have time to waste, and I do not say that lightly.
I am never debugging OPNsense ever again, especially not for four hours on a (yesterday) Saturday, and especially not putting off updates in a colo for TWO YEARS because their team decided to break admin group SSH controls, hamper CARP flapping controls, breaking IPMI fencing, and the list goes on. I am done.
What now? Three realistic options.
1) BSD Router Project: I've built custom BSD-RP releases with Poudriere, loved just about everything it offers.
2) VyOS: configurable via CLI in a fraction of the time that was wasted on debugging OPNsense. Solid product, enjoying it more every day.
3) OpenWRT: I build custom releases for NanoPi and Meraki rooted WAPs and SOHO boxes, it's fun, though it's not running my 100G infra.

Today, I learned about GLF OS, a Linux distro based on NixOS and pre-configured for gamers.
Developed in France, Europe.
@avoca @mcc #simplex works on #android #ios #windows and #linux ( #flatpak #appimage ) it doesn't need account syncronisation because there are no accounts just profiles which can be transferred between devices by exporting the chat database or you can kind of "cast" your mobile client to a desktop client as long as theyre both connected to the same LAN you just scan a qr code and then you're controlling your mobile client from your desktop client

#PythonBPF - Writing #eBPF Programs in Pure #Python
https://xeon.me/gnome/pythonbpf/
Varun R Mallya writes: ""Python-BPF offers a new way to write eBPF programs entirely in Python, compiling them into real object files. This project is open-source and available on GitHub (https://github.com/varun-r-mallya/python-bpf ) and PyPI (https://pypi.org/project/pythonbpf/ ). I wrote it alongside R41k0u.
[…]
Before Python-BPF, writing eBPF programs in Python typically involved embedding C code within multiline strings, often using libraries like bcc. eBPF allows for small programs to run based on kernel events, similar to kernel modules.
[…]
Python-BPF brings the true eBPF experience to Python by allowing the exact same functionality to be replaced by valid Python code. This is a significant improvement over multiline C strings, offering support from existing Python tools.

Linux Mint is often shilled as a lightweight distro that runs great on older hardware. Well, turns out the Cinnamon Desktop actually requires a certain amount of GPU performance to render smoothly.
On my old laptop Intel HD Graphics 4000, the entire Desktop only runs at ~30 FPS. The Xfce/MATE Editions run at 60 with occasional drops.
I didn't expect that from Cinnamon. Even KDE Plasma ran better.

Mitigations for #vmscape have been merged to #Linux mainline and included in new stable and longterm #kernel versions released about an hour ago (like 6.16.7 or 6.12.47).
Vmscape is a vulnerability that essentially takes Spectre-v2 and attacks host userspace from a guest. It particularly affects hypervisors like #QEMU.
For more details see this #LinuxKernel merge commit https://git.kernel.org/torvalds/c/223ba8ee0a3986718c874b66ed24e7f87f6b8124, the doc changes in contains at https://git.kernel.org/torvalds/c/9969779d0803f5dcd4460ae7aca2bc3fd91bff12, or the following page from those that published the vulnerability:
It is tracked as #CVE-2025-40300

Oh no. It's true: The mouse cursor image on Wayland is delayed by one frame. 😭
Proof: https://mort.coffee/home/wayland-input-latency/
Great explaination by @lina: https://lobste.rs/s/oxtwre/hard_numbers_wayland_vs_x11_input_latency#c_edq7tn
A failed attempt to fix this in @gnome: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/merge_requests/4249
It sounds like there is going to be a new kernel API that would allow updating the cursor independently and therefore earlier, but I couldn't find anything about that.

I just updated #CachyOS (with Arch updates), and now no apps load. #Gnome loads, but Terminal, Gedit etc don't load.
That has been my experience with Arch & Arch-based distros: every few weeks, you gotta deal with unforeseen problems.
That's why I prefer Linux #Mint. It just works. I don't spend time dealing with things I should NOT be dealing with. If I want a rolling release, there's Debian-Testing which is very stable.
I don't suppose there's a #terminal escape sequence that causes it to display some text in a new window? Because that would be an interesting alternative to a traditional #pager: instead of paging through the output of a program, it is displayed in its entirety in a separate window.
I think #macOS used to do this with man pages, but the feature seems to have been removed.

Dmitry Brant: Using Claude Code to modernize a 25-year-old kernel driver
https://dmitrybrant.com/2025/09/07/using-claude-code-to-modernize-a-25-year-old-kernel-driver
"[…] one of my hobbies is helping people recover data from old tape cartridges, such as QIC-80 tapes, which were a rather popular backup medium in the 1990s among individuals […]
Whenever I receive a QIC-80 tape for recovery, I power up one of my older PC workstations which has the appropriate tape drive attached to it, and boot into a very old version of #Linux (namely CentOS 3.5), because this is the only way to use the ftape driver, which is the #kernel driver necessary for communicating with this tape drive, allowing the user to dump the binary contents of the tape. […]
The trouble is, the ftape driver hasn’t been supported since roughly the year 2000, and was soon removed from the #LinuxKernel for this reason. This is why I’ve needed to run a painfully old version of Linux anytime I have to work with one of these drives. It would be great if ftape worked on a modern distro, with all the benefits and affordances that would provide.
So a couple of weeks ago, it occurred to me to make a simple request to Claude Code: […]"
2/ FWIW, here is another quote from the #Linux 6.17-rc5 announcement:
""I'd claim that it's all small patches, but we do have one larger one: the DLink/Sundance driver was resurrected [after being removed for 6.13-rc1], so in between all the one- and few-liners, there's a revert that brings back 2k lines in the form that driver.""

""Things remain normal - both the diffstat and the commit counts look entirely sane. […]
The one discussion that I was part of that happened last week that might be worth mentioning is that I've been complaining for years about useless "Link:" entries in commit messages that don't point to any new information. […] if that link ends up being just a pointer to the email that became that commit - with nothing else - that allegedly helpful link only added human cost for me.
The same ends up being true when chasing down bug reports.
So please: don't add useless information to commits in general, but in _particular_ don't add "Link:" tags that only point back to the original submission email. […]
Make the links be something *useful*. Make them point to the report for the bug that was the cause of the commit. Make them point to the discussion that explains the impetus for the commit. […]
Make "Link:" tags be something to celebrate, not something to curse because they are worthless and waste peoples time.
Please?

Here is this week's #Linux and #opensource news video!
in this one, we have a date for the #Cosmic Beta, #GNOME deciding to keep X11 sessions a bit longer, plenty of #SteamOS related news, and more:
Recording (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05gfIRahZA8 ) and slides (https://static.sched.com/hosted_files/osseu2025/e4/OSS-EU25-Werner-Fischer-The-Power-of-theDevice-Mapper.pdf ) from Werner Fischer's #OSSEU25 talk "The Power of the #DeviceMapper - From Dm-cache To Dm-zoned" are now online.
From the abstract: "The device mapper has been part of the #LinuxKernel since #kernel version 2.6. It allows the creation of virtual block devices by mapping their address space to other block devices or special functions. In this way, it can map physical block devices such as hard disks or SSDs to higher-level virtual block devices. It is the basis for the Logical Volume Manager (LVM), #Linux software RAIDs and dm-crypt encryption, and provides additional features such as file system snapshots.
However, the use of Device Mapper targets is not limited to that. Many other targets offer often unknown features. Most of these are intended for production use. However, there are also some targets designed specifically for debugging.
In this talk, Werner gives a full overview of all Device Mapper targets.
For production use these are: dm-cachd, dm-clone, dm-crypt, dm-ebs, dm-era, dm-integrity, dm-linear, dm-mirror, dm-raid, dm-stripe, dm-switch, dm-thin, dm-unstripe, dm-verity, dm-vdo, dm-writecache and dm-zoned.
For debugging: dm-delay, dm-dust, dm-flakey and dm-zero.
He also briefly shows drbd, md (RAID) and bcache, which, like device mapper targets, can work as devices "on top" of normal block devices."
Est-ce qu'il y a un lien de causalité ?
Recording (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-gBQ_giJrI ) and slides (https://static.sched.com/hosted_files/osseu2025/49/oss-slides-pw-v2.pdf ) from Kundan Kumar's #OSSEU25 talk "Rethinking Writeback: Scaling #Linux Filesystem and Memory Performance for the Next Decade" are now online.
From the abstract: "Linux’s current writeback infrastructure, while robust, was designed before large folios, CXL-tiered memory, and AI workloads demanding low-latency, high-throughput I/O. Today, workloads like RAG pipelines using vector databases with buffered I/O, and memory tiering on CXL, are exposing scalability limits in how the #kernel handles writeback.
This talk presents a forward-looking view on evolving Linux’s writeback model. We’ll explore how the single-threaded design stalls page migration and reduces memory compaction effectiveness—affecting hugepage allocations and folio movement across memory tiers, contributing to fragmentation. On the storage side, parallelizing writeback improves throughput and responsiveness under dirty-page pressure, especially for sustained-write workloads with large memory footprints on High capacity SSDs.

I need to copy some TBs of data (incl. large files) from an NTFS drive to SOME_FILE_SYSTEM and then that SOME_FILE_SYSTEM to Ext4. (*)

A useful combination of options for the #netstat command on #linux is "-n -p -u -t -l -e": show all listening udp and tcp sockets, include program PID and extra information, do not translate numbers.
If you speak german, these options are easy to remember in this order: `netstat -tulpen` -- what means "tulips" 🌷. A single tulip, `netstat -tulpe` turns on number resolution.
#FreeBSD equivalent is `sockstat -l -Ptcp,udp`
@wyatt Personally I'd consider just doing some sort of "#FTP on demand" thing or just have a cheap storage VPS on hand for that (or some #Linux Server on the Network that once-a-day pulls the latest installer file and just redistributes it locally.

I do this so infrequently that I forget how and have to figure it out from scratch each time. I'm probably not the only one, so perhaps this reminder will stick in your memory and help you the next time you need to.
To change the default kernel that grub boots:
1) Set GRUB_DEFAULT=saved in /etc/default/grub
2) Run update-grub
Now here's the tricky part:
3) Use grub-set-default to set the default, but _you have to respect the menu structure of /boot/grub/grub.cfg when doing it_.

ARCH LINUX BOOTC WORKS. I DECLARE THE LINUX ATOMIC AGE IS UPON US!
I'm sure you'll be pleased to know that the News tab in Nautilus from GNOME 1.4 (released in 2001) still shows current @lwn headlines/https://lwn.net still support whatever API/feed it's using.
our community have always tried to embrace the upstream-first approach to development, and one of the largest roadblocks in that respect is often the Linux Kernel itself.
For better or worse it takes quite a lot of effort to get devicetree files and drivers upstreamed, but this is by far one of the more important goals for wider Linux Mobile adoption: upstream support makes devices more visible and encourages kernel maintainers to take more of an interest in the work we do
with that in mind, we are proposing an adjustment to the community device category requirements: to get your device into the community category it would now HAVE to have a devicetree in upstream, more specifically the upstream kernel needs to boot with some kind of display output and a working USB port - the bare minimum for easy tinkering, testing, and further development.
We hope that this will encourage device maintainers to get involved in upstream kernel development and submit their work rather than keeping everything in a kernel fork that they maintain
We are very open to feedback on this, please let us know what you think in the GitLab issue

All #POSIX-compliant (or close enough) shells welcome! I probably don't know them all but off the top of my head:
#bash
#dash
#fish (sorry for the spam, marine life enthusiasts)
#zsh
#ksh
#tcsh & #csh I think?

The first computer Linux was ever installed on
I stumbled upon an LWN.net article from 2023, in which Lars Wirzenius, a long-time Debian developer and friend of Linus Torvalds, recalls the very early days of Linux - in fact, before it was even called Linux. There's so many fun little stories in here, like how the Linux kernel started out as a multitasking demo written in x86 assembly, which

When I'm asked why OpenBSD is good and that I want to reply honestly, I have no argument.
From a technical point of view, I can't tell any strong benefits using OpenBSD, NetBSD or FreeBSD over Linux, although this doesn't mean they are bad.
It would be easy for me to be "cargo-culting" facts, being a "fanboy" or enumerating features that are exclusive to one (and they are rare, except if you are looking for the very very same feature!).
The truth is that what one OS will do better than an other, it will also do worse in another area.
It's important that we keep the BSD systems as relevant Linux alternatives: for software diversity, innovation and freedom of choice.

Good to see that XLibre forked the X11 server so projects depending on X11 can go on further.

「 The bsd-user-4-linux project allows BSD user-mode emulation for QEMU on Linux. The goal is to run unmodified FreeBSD binaries on modern Linux systems. The initial bsd-user-4-linux port is able to successfully run a build world with multiple jobs. FreeBSD's sd, bash, clang, find, grep, git, clang, and other binaries are working on Linux. Granted, those programs are also natively available for Linux 」

UPDATE: I haven't seen Recall in action there. I was just asking the doctor how they'll deal with it.
This morning, I went to the doctor for a scheduled appointment. While she was looking at the results of blood tests from two years ago on the screen (and suggested repeating them for a follow-up), I realized she was using Windows 11. A detail came to mind. The doctor is extremely polite and friendly, so I asked her, "How do you handle the feature called Recall?" The doctor was taken aback and had no idea what I was talking about. I was about to drop the conversation, but she, being a serious professional, immediately called the technicians who manage their PCs to ask for clarification. They downplayed it, saying it's not an issue and that it's a feature "on all PCs, so we can't do anything about it." She started to express that she didn’t like it and wanted it deactivated. No luck: they won’t proceed because, according to them, even deactivating it is "a hack that could compromise future updates." She’s furious and will talk to her colleagues and the decision-makers. She wants secure systems because "there’s patient data involved."
In reality, patient data is stored on servers (which I haven't investigated), but everything that appears on the screen is, in my opinion, at risk.
I’ve offered to help them find a solution—because, if I'm right, all they need is LibreOffice and a browser. In that case, I’ll suggest one of the *BSD or Linux systems and do it for free.
I don’t want to make money off my doctor. I just want patient data to be (sufficiently) secure.

@jameswhite @cmconseils ah, no, wait.
I built a booting USB stick with fdisk + mke2fs + cp'ing the kernel + grub-install. This is detected and boots fine. #Linux sees the device I want to rescue, but:

I can read the whole device on my laptop, so this APU went from booting from it, to not booting from it, to not talking to it.

Vampire Survivors latest Beta adds online play and more new content https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2025/08/vampire-survivors-latest-beta-adds-online-play-and-more/
Yesterday, my housemate asked me if I could help her with this PC she got gifted that still had an old Windows install on it. She wanted to play some games on it, but didn't know how to login to the old user accounts.
I installed Bazzite on it and she's been playing games since, with absolutely 0 questions for support. This is especially impressive considering she never touched Linux, nor was she particularly skilled in computers in other areas.
In the meantime, I would like to point out two nice little projects that I now use almost daily on the Linux console: 1.) A music player that basically leaves nothing to be desired. It plays basically all formats, clear UI, displays album covers (if available) and even lyrics if they are available. and: 2.) A slim player for Soma-FM streams.
Relaxed ambient or metal, everything is available and quick and easy to install.

""What problems does this solve?
Databases - like MySQL - work on a fixed internal page size, which is often larger than the filesystem block size. […]
The downside of using the doublewrite buffer is that data is written twice, thus increasing application latency, decreasing data throughput, and increasing wear on the storage device (and thus decreasing lifespan).
Block atomic writes provides an alternate approach to using the doublewrite buffer, by guaranteeing that we will never experience a corrupted (or torn) InnoDB page committed to the storage device even in the case of an operating system, storage subsystem, or unexpected MySQL process exit in the middle of a write.
When block atomic writes are used by MySQL, a good copy of the page is always available from the InnoDB data files; as such, the doublewrite buffer is not required in that scenario. […]""

So, suppose I'm setting up a Linux-based file server, for Linux-based clients.
Which protocol / server software should I use?
I'm talking about live access to the files on the server, not syncing and stuff. What's stable, secure, and fast (in that order)?
I'd like transparent access, i.e. mount it onto the client machine. It should be able to gracefully deal with disconnects and reconnects.
If there's an option I'm missing, feel free to comment. I'm not considering FTP though. :P
