I'm currently using Kubuntu, and I've got it down to only one snap package (thunderbird)

Is there a moderately stable distro out there using KDE, apt packaging, and NO SNAP stupidity? (The snap installation of krita is effectively useless) I would not mind losing flatpack, either.

I realize that the anti-UNIX abomination that is systemd is probably unavoidable in these benighted times.

If you've been running #Debian for a while and been doing in-place upgrades, it might be a good idea to do a clean install. I use LUKS encryption on my laptop and whatever version I originally installed only created a 512MB /boot partition and I was getting warnings every time I'd install a kernel update about it being full. 13 upped that to 1 GB. Between that and some changes in Gnome I didn't see because of old settings carrying over, a clean install was definitely a good idea.

@bitbraindev Used #linux for 26 years now, current favorite would be @fedora #KDE variant.

It works, updates, even upgrades without issue.

Not a big fan of #GNOME myself but it makes sense to me that even Linus Torvalds uses #Fedora himself.

There's a lot to be said for something working consistently.

I wrote about #ArtStation account I didn't delete last week... Today I was reminded they are owned by #EpicGames - and regardless of possible direct #genAI issues in the future I feel I have enough reasons to boycott them.

So I just deleted this account too.

And gaming on #Linux and obstacles in it are rather personal thing to me. This year I am finally to close to finish TES: Oblivion. Something I started in 2011-2012, but my playing was interrupted by my full migration to Linux in 2013. And now I am finally able to made it

Ich habe mir nach langer Zeit mal wieder ein #CallOfDuty gekauft, und zwar #BlackOps3 in der Zombies Chronicles Edition. Ich fand den Zombie Modus von #BlackOps6 über #GamePass so geil, dass ich den unbedingt mal wieder spielen wollte, aber moderne CODs auf #Linux halt nicht laufen.

Und der Zombie Modus von BO3 soll der beste sein, also bin ich doch mal gespannt. Dank T7x Patch kann man dann auch wieder Multiplayer spielen. Ich bin vor allem gespannt, wie gut das dann auf dem #SteamDeck läuft.

About 9 months ago I bought a new laptop and installed Ubuntu. The one issue was printing to an old Dymo label printer.
Tried downloading the Linux drivers from Dymo but couldn't get them to work.
The printer was detected but the system decided to associate some HP driver which didn't work.

Spent about an hour yesterday and ended simply using the printer settings to select another driver from a database of drivers. Turned out to be very simple.
Using GLabels to format and print.

Sweet.

Now got one last issue - loading data from an MS Access database. Nice if there is a way to open it with the built in Forms. Might be a stretch...

@mdione Setting up my own flatpak server wouldn't really solve the problem... before I could do that, I would have to basically re-solve the problems which they solved in order to get all the things working with version 2.10, and once I did that, I wouldn't need a flatpak server, I could just install gimp from source.

Because the solution which I did have which was working for me (the Flatpak version 2.10 of gimp, with gimp-resynthesizer and g'mic and old plugins) is GONE, VANISHED, never to be seen again. Flatpak now only has version 3.0 of GIMP, and I foolishly did an update and wiped out my old version completely before I realised this.

All of my choices are unappetising.

A. Use an old AppImage 2.10 version (of which I have more than one) none of whom I could get all three things working with (resynth + g'mic + plugins)
B. Use my distro's version of 2.10, which supports none of these things.
C. Choose "B" and learn how to write GIMP scripts in Scheme, to reverse-engineer the plugins I can't live without.
D. Use my distro's version of 3.0, which does support resynth, but not g'mic or any of my old plugins; figure out how it does everything differently, and fight with the bugginess of a new release.
E. Choose "D" and also learn how to write GIMP 3.0 plugins (which involves a huge learning curve), and reverse-engineer the old plugins I can't live without.
F. Choose "E" and also debug the compilation of g'mic from source so that I can use it as a standalone program.
G. Find some other graphical editor which my distro supports, which will not do any of the things I want at all.
H. Give up on doing digital art ever again.

Absolutely none of these options are acceptable, but they are, as far as I can tell, the only options available. (sigh)

I updated a KDE based installation of mine in MX-Linux, a couple of days ago, it's updated rather often. For some reason the update sequence didn't want to update Nvidia firmware which I never ever use. The fix was to manually remove the Nvidia firmware, apt remove, and then let the update continue

Even though I never use their hardware Nvidia still tries to be problematic in Linux

FreeBSD 15.0 (almost)-RELEASE, using pkgbase, on my Ryzen 9 MiniPC (and compared to openSUSE Tumbleweed):

- Full disk encryption works beautifully via GELI, as usual.

- Installing KDE is easy and it works perfectly on Wayland.

- All my main apps work. Others will run via the Linuxulator or Wine (Linux browsers, WinBox for MikroTik, etc).

- The fan seems more relaxed.

- The system generally feels snappier.

- Native ZFS. I can autosnapshot every 5 minutes. If I try to do this with btrfs - snapshots of the home directory included and quotas enabled - the system hangs while handling them (which is why Tumbleweed doesn’t snapshot home by default).

- The media keys on my keyboard work, but volume control uses huge steps and 30 percent is already extremely loud. This can be fixed. The monitor brightness setting is also a bit off, but I don't care.

- amdgpu works perfectly.

- The wifi card works. I haven’t tested the speed because I immediately installed the realtek-re-kmod driver to use the 2.5 Gbit ethernet connection.

- Suspend doesn’t work. This is a big problem for me. It’s probably more psychological than technical, but I can’t leave the computer powered for hours when I’m not using it. I already have servers running 24/7 here. I even considered putting my Qotom FreeBSD server in a VM. It would probably work, but next summer it might be an issue because temperatures here aren’t low and spinning disks don’t love heat (and I don’t love their noise).

- It’s stable and reliable. I’ve done almost everything and it just works, as expected.

- Some small glitches remain, mostly due to missing configuration or packages (I didn’t tune anything. I just installed it and started using it).

A much smoother experience than a year ago, when I bought it.

Will I keep using FreeBSD on this minipc?
I’m not sure yet, since Tumbleweed works great and the lack of suspend really influences my choice. I'll contact Aymeric and try to offer some help to improve this.

For now, I’ll keep it on an external SSD and switch from time to time, especially when I know I’ll be using the minipc for hours.

What's the common wisdom regarding #Ubuntu #Linux and systemd-resolved, dnsmasq, and NetworkManager?

Had a weird thing happen where a #Wireguard tunnel didn't go up but DNS was still trying to connect to the DNS server over the WireGuard tunnel and was failing.

Is there any way to stop the DNS madness? It looks like they're both clobbering each other.

FYI, S3 suspend/wakeup works flawlessly with #FreeBSD and #OpenBSD on this laptop without any hack.

I bought a secondhand Tascam audio interface, which was very cheap, and with not a single scratch on it. I did a little research beforehand, which told me that it works with Windows, but stopped working on OSX a while ago - I assume why it was so cheap.
It has a nice style to it though, and will look nice in my living room - as I wanted it as part of a home server media hub setup. But, I want to use Linux. So.. purchasing was a gamble.
Interestingly enough though, despite it being an older device, a Linux kernel module for it has been developed just over this last 6 months, and will be merged into a future kernel version.
However, I have compiled the source code and installed it as an extra kernel module - and - this thing is working flawlessly!!!

Ich hab seit geraumer Zeit ein Phänomen, dass hin und wieder, unregelmäßig und ohne erkennbaren Trigger (also nicht aktiv reproduzierbar) auftritt:
innerhalb der ersten halben Stunde nach dem Einschalten des PCs friert alles ein nur der Sound loopt ca 5-6x die letzten 2-3 Sekunden, dann Ruhe und nichts geht mehr; Reset und alles läuft wieder (und tritt dann auch nicht nochmal auf). Würde schätzen so 1x pro 20 Starts (???)...
Hat man davon schon gehört? Was kann das sein?

Welche Distributionen und Programme verwendet eines heutzutage für eine Volksschule? Habt ihr Tipps und Erfahrungswerte? Gibt's da schöne und gute Sachen?

"Unsere" Volksschule hat nämlich ein paar gebrauchte Laptops bekommen und würde sie gerne im Unterricht verwenden, weiß aber nicht, wie.

Ich hab mir einen angeschaut. Hardware total okay. Da war Win10 drauf, Win11 wird offiziell nicht unterstützt, kann aber anscheinend mit Tricks zum Laufen gebracht werden. (Will ich aber nicht.)

So genau wissen sie natürlich nicht, was sie machen wollen (sonst wär's ja einfach). Soweit ich weiß, haben die Klassen im Moment je zwei alte PCs, und manche haben ein Tablet. Damit benutzen sie Anton, Antolin, diverse Lernspiele, ganz unterschiedlich ja nach Lehrperson. Angedacht und gewünscht ist irgendwas mit Digitaler Grundbildung (das ist dann ein eigenes Schulfach in der nachfolgenden Schule, in der Volksschule ist es nur "im Lehrplan verankert"), und/oder auch was Richtung Safer Internet.

Eigentlich brauch ich eh nur eine grafische Oberfläche, einen Webbrowser und vielleicht noch einen Texteditor. Aber was begeistert? Was macht Wow? Lernspiele? Musiksachen? Und was ist robust?

Because Slackware doesn't ship #Plasma6 by default, how do you use it, from the LuckyCyborg packages, the slack-a-roni packages maintained by our friend @jloc0, some other package set I don't know about, or compiled from source?

Let me know in the replies, I wanna gauge the userbase for these packages (at least among fedi users). Sadly, LuckyCyborg will soon stop working on the packages, so @jloc0's packages are your best bet (I prefer them at least)

I read a lot of complaints about this or that FOSS solution not working. It occurred to me that most “mainstream” Linux distros match my workflow pretty well, so perhaps I’m just fortunate in that regard. Also, I have been using Linux for a long time, so I have adjusted my workflow accordingly.

I think a lot of those complaints have to do with someone expecting FOSS to work exactly like Windows, and that an adjustment to their workflow would help them out a lot.

My server has nfs. My home assistant connects to that nfs just fine. Nothing else can connect to that nfs, and those that output an error give "access denied by server". I've set the nfs shares for all hosts, all the involved machines are in the same vlan on the same subnet, and other services on the server are accessible with no problem. I've set file perms to ro for all (temporary)

Interestingly enough I use copyQ as the fix for my favorite clipboard manager Parcellite in Wayland on my SBCs. Both work without the ability to have the keyboard shortcuts triggered.

The problem with Parcellite as a bonus on top, is that I do not even get its icon in the status bar. That means invoking Parcellite in Wayland requires me to pull it up front manually, too tedious.
Once in ten starts Parcellite works flawlessly. Not good .

copyQ on the other hand, has legitimate complains but it works, and most importantly, shows it's icon on the status bar.

copyQ even tells you which functions of it fail in Wayland on the SBC, running Debian arm.

The natively packaged clipboard managers that i found ready to use for Debian ARM are not as polished as Parcellite.

Since copyQ is extremely powerful I chose to use it even though I still can't trigger it with a keyboard hotkey. I have a distinct feeling that XWayland doesn't work properly in relationship with both copyQ & Parcellite. It's even possible that it is not configured properly by default on my Debian ARM installation from the Raspberry Pi full install

TIL that bunzip2 in Linux / Debian / MX Linux deletes, I repeat, DELETES the original archive when you run it in vanilla form

`bunzip2 dfly-x86_64-6.4.2_REL.iso.bz2`

resulted in the iso being unpacked with deletion of the original WITHOUT WARNING

Since I'm on expensive LTE+ 4G internet that is significant.

I have not used bunzip2 in years, but should have remembered this hostile default. It was not that way IIRC
Do I need to read the manpages of commands I have not used in years in Linux now? Why was the default changed

Luckily I have copies of the bzip2 iso on multiple partitions of HDD and SSD

Jetzt habe ich es getan. Seit heute läuft mein Laptop mit Debian 13 und Plasma Desktop. Schweren Herzens habe ich die Affinity Suite geopfert, vielleicht wird sie eines Tages mit Wine laufen, wer weiß.

Aber unglaublich, wie die Kiste rennt. (Lenovo E14 Gen3 mit Ryzen 5). Alles geht Out-of-The-Box.

Wenn ich was von #Linux erzählt habe, dann erklärten mir meine Arbeitskollegen meistens:
"So ein Linux-NAS wollte ich schon immer, aber leider keine Zeit "(diese Menschen haben nie Zeit für nichts)
Ich frag dann: "Für was ein NAS ?"
"Die Alte fotografiert so viel, und wenn die Filme und Fotos weg sind, krieg ich Ärger." (typisch für einen Möchtegern-admin-babbler)
Ich: "Aber warum ? … Die hat doch schon längst alles bei iCloud, Google, Samsung, Insta, … Du bist 15 Jahre zu spät. "
Er: "Spannendes Thema ,aber jetzt erst mal Meeting" (Abgang)

Heute war ich auf einem Vortrag zu Vertrauen in Open Source. Der Vortragende meinte, der Unterschied zwischen Open Source und Freier Software sei, dass man letztere für alles nutzen kann, auch Atomkraftwerke usw.

Nein, der Unterschied ist Copyleft: Alle Änderungen müssen unter gleichen Lizenzbedingungen freigegeben werden.

MIT/BSD darf man ändern und zurückgeben, muss aber nicht. GPL verlangt Rückgabe der gemachten Änderungen an die Gesellschaft.
