ts3level: TeamSpeak-Identity-Level auf der GPU rechnen, mit automatischem .ini-Patch
Neues Linux-Tool, das das Security Level einer TeamSpeak-3-Identity GPU-beschleunigt auf NVIDIA-Hardware hochrechnet und den neuen Counter atomar zurück in die .ini schreibt. Plus GTK-GUI mit Live-Telemetrie, vier Sprachen und ehrlicher ETA-Anzeige. Architektur in Rust und CUDA, MIT-Lizenz. [SENSITIVE CONTENT]
Wer eine TeamSpeak-3-Identity mit einem höheren Security Level haben möchte als das, was der offizielle Client innerhalb eines Menschenlebens rausrechnet, kommt um GPU-Hilfe nicht herum. Es gibt da seit Jahren eine Handvoll Drittanbieter-Tools. Was bisher fehlte, war der unspektakuläre letzte Schritt: das gefundene Ergebnis wieder in die .ini zu schreiben. Genau diese Lücke schließt ts3level, ein neues Open-Source-Tool, an dem ich die letzten Wochen gesessen habe.

Das Repo liegt auf GitHub unter Kernel-Error/ts-identities-security-level (MIT-Lizenz). Release v0.1.0 inklusive prebuilt Tarball für x86_64 Linux mit glibc ≥ 2.39 gibt’s hier. Der Tarball ist rund 2 MB groß, mehr braucht es nicht.
Das Problem: Single-Thread-CPU vs. exponentielles Wachstum
Das „Security Level“ einer TS3-Identity ist nichts anderes als ein Proof-of-Work. Man variiert einen uint64-Counter und hashed solange SHA1(pubkey_b64 || decimal(counter)) bis vorne genug Null-Bits stehen. Pro Level verdoppelt sich der durchschnittliche Aufwand. Der offizielle TS3-Client rechnet das in einem einzelnen CPU-Thread. Ab ungefähr Level 50 wird das schlicht unbrauchbar.
Es gibt seit Jahren GPU-beschleunigte Drittanbieter-Hasher. landave/TSIdentityTool ist die CPU-Referenz in C, mittlerweile dormant. landave/TeamSpeakHasher bringt das auf OpenCL, der CUDA-Fork von thissepic ist aktuell das aktivste Tool und schafft auf einer RTX 4070 Ti rund 20 GH/s. bratkartoffel/ts3idtools macht das in C mit pthreads auf der CPU.
Allen gemeinsam ist die UX-Lücke: keines schreibt das Ergebnis zurück. Der typische Workflow ist Pubkey aus der .ini extrahieren, Hasher füttern, Counter aufschreiben, Counter manuell in die .ini patchen, Datei re-importieren. landave begründet das bewusst mit Privatekey-Schutz, der Hasher soll den Private Key gar nicht erst zu sehen kriegen. Eine sehr saubere Trennung, aber für den Endanwender eine ziemlich friktionsreiche Angelegenheit.
Genau dort setzt ts3level an. Man zeigt auf seine .ini, der Rest passiert automatisch. Atomarer Write, einmaliges .bak, fertig. Drumherum eine GTK-GUI, NVML-Telemetrie, Übersetzungen auf en/de/es/fr, eine ehrliche ETA-Anzeige und ein Identity-Details-Panel, damit man nicht jedes Mal die Datei von Hand parsen muss.
Wie funktioniert „Security Level“ überhaupt?
Die Kernformel ist erfrischend einfach:

pubkey_b64 ist die base64 der public-key-only ASN.1 DER eines ECDSA-Keys auf der Kurve secp256r1 (NIST P-256). Es ist genau der String, den der TS3-Client im Identity-Dialog unter „Public Key“ anzeigt. decimal(counter) ist die ganz normale Dezimaldarstellung des uint64 ohne Padding, also "42" und nicht "0042". Konkatenation passiert auf ASCII-Stringebene, nicht auf irgendwelchen rohen Bytes. Klingt banal, ist aber tatsächlich die häufigste Fehlerquelle bei Re-Implementierungen.
Das Zählen der führenden Null-Bits läuft byte-0-zuerst und innerhalb jedes Bytes von LSB nach MSB. Genau die hashcat-Konvention. In Python wäre das:

level = 8 * zero_bytes + zero_bitsDie Wahrscheinlichkeit dass ein einzelner Hash mindestens Level L erreicht ist 1 / 2^L. Im Mittel braucht es also 2^L Versuche pro angestrebtes Level. Auf meiner Testkarte, einer RTX 4060 Ti bei rund 2,4 GH/s, sieht das so aus:

Diese Werte sind statistische Mittelwerte. Die echte Wartezeit ist exponentialverteilt, man kann also mit Faktor 2 bis 3 schneller oder langsamer Glück haben. Genau deshalb zeigt das Tool die ETA auch als das was sie ist (ein Mittelwert), und nicht als seriös wirkenden Countdown.
Was im .ini-File steckt
Eine exportierte TS3-Identity sieht ungefähr so aus:

Der Teil hinter dem V ist doppelt base64-codiert, mit einer XOR-Schicht dazwischen. Das hat landave per Black-Box-Analyse aus dem Client-Verhalten rekonstruiert. Schematisch:

Der amüsante Stolperstein dabei: TSKEY ist im C-Original definiert als const char *TSKEY = "b9dfaa7bee...";. Das sind nicht die 64 Hex-Bytes, sondern die 128 ASCII-Zeichen der Hex-Darstellung selbst. Eine Stunde Debugging, bis ich gemerkt habe woran es liegt. Ist halt einer dieser Punkte, bei denen die Spec ohne Quelltext nicht reichen würde.
Im inneren DER liegt der libtomcrypt-formatierte Keypair:

}Für den Hash-Input brauchen wir nur die public-only Variante dieses DER-Blobs: gleiche Struktur, flags=0, X, Y, und der private Skalar k fällt einfach raus. Der Hasher bekommt damit nie den privaten Schlüssel zu sehen. Genau diese Trennung, die landave aus gutem Grund eingeführt hat, bleibt erhalten. Das Auto-Patchen der .ini passiert in einem separaten Modul, das den Counter zurückschreibt, ohne den Private Key überhaupt anzufassen.
Warum eine GPU
SHA-1 ist ein dankbarer Kandidat für massiv-paralleles Hashing. Es gibt keine Datenabhängigkeiten zwischen verschiedenen Counter-Werten, jede der zigtausend GPU-Threads kann einen anderen Counter testen und das Ergebnis unabhängig vergleichen. Ein moderner Desktop-Kern auf der CPU kommt vielleicht in den niedrigen dreistelligen MH/s-Bereich für SHA-1, eine RTX 4060 Ti im Tool rund 2,4 GH/s. Das reicht um aus Level 50 statt „mehreren Jahren“ so etwas wie „mehreren Tagen“ zu machen, also einen Bereich, in dem ein Run überhaupt erst Sinn ergibt.
Das Tool macht nichts Heldenhaftes mit dem Kernel: simples SHA-1 in CUDA C, ein Counter pro Thread, atomarer Compare-and-Swap auf der „bester gefundener Level“-Variable im global memory. Hochoptimierte Hasher wie der von thissepic kommen mit Midstate-Precompute und LOP3.LUT-Tricks auf ungefähr das fünffache. Dieser Teil steht auf der Roadmap, ist aber für den ersten Release bewusst nicht angegangen worden. Der eigentliche Mehrwert von ts3level ist UX und Auto-Patch, nicht der letzte ausgequetschte GH/s.
Was das Tool macht: zwei Binaries, ein Source-Tree
Aus dem Workspace fallen zwei Binaries:
ts3level: headless CLI mit Progress-Spinner, gut für Server, tmux, SSH-Sessionsts3level-gui: GTK4 + libadwaita Desktop-Anwendung, übersetzt in en/de/es/fr
Konkrete Use-Cases, die im Auge waren beim Entwurf:
- Die eigene TS-Identity von einem aktuellen Level (z. B. 45) auf ein Wunsch-Level (z. B. 55) hochrechnen, ohne sich mit base64-Blobs und Counter-Werten herumzuschlagen.
- Headless auf einem Server mit einer NVIDIA-Karte über Nacht laufen lassen, morgens fertige
.iniaus dem Backup-Verzeichnis ziehen. - Endless-Mode: das Tool läuft permanent, jedes Mal wenn ein höheres Level gefunden wird, wird die Datei sofort aktualisiert. Wer kein konkretes Ziel hat und einfach gucken will, was an einem Wochenende rauskommt, fährt damit ganz gut.
- Identity-Details ablesen, ohne die
.iniper Hand zu parsen: Nickname, Fingerprint (also die TS3-„Unique ID“), Public Key, Current Level, Current Counter.
Beim Start auf eine frisch generierte Demo-Identity sieht der CLI-Output so aus:

Und während der Run läuft sieht die Statuszeile so aus:

In der GUI ist genau dieselbe Information da, plus ein 60-Sekunden-Ringbuffer-Graph der GPU-Auslastung. Praktisch wenn man parallel zockt und sehen will, ob der Hash-Run noch genug Luft hat oder die Karte sich gegen das Spiel durchsetzen muss.
Architektur (kurz)
Komplett Rust, fünf Crates in einem Workspace:

Beim Build ruft build.rs einmal nvcc --fatbin auf und erzeugt eine Fatbin mit echtem SASS für sm_70, sm_75, sm_80, sm_86, sm_89, sm_90, plus PTX-Fallback für künftige Architekturen. Diese Fatbin wird per include_bytes! direkt in das Rust-Binary einkompiliert. Der Endanwender braucht damit nur den NVIDIA-Treiber, kein CUDA-Toolkit. libcuda.so.1 und libnvidia-ml.so.1 werden zur Laufzeit per dlopen gezogen, das funktioniert ab Treiber 525 ohne Klimmzüge.
Das Zurückschreiben in die .ini macht das Tool über flock(LOCK_EX) auf die Datei, einmaliges .bak wenn keines existiert, neue Bytes in eine tempfile::NamedTempFile im selben Verzeichnis, fsync, anschließend rename(2) drüber. POSIX-atomar. Bei Stromausfall mittendrin gibt es entweder die alte oder die neue Datei, nie ein halbgares Gemisch.
Vor jedem Run prüft ein Preflight neun Bedingungen: libcuda ladbar, CUDA-Devices vorhanden, Zugriffsrechte auf /dev/nvidia*, .ini lesbar, schreibbar, Parent-Dir schreibbar, Datei strukturell gültig, kein konkurrierender Lock, genug Platz für eine .bak. Fehler werden als strukturierte Codes ausgegeben, dokumentiert in der README. Backtraces gibt es nicht, weil sie für Endanwender nur Lärm sind.
Tests stehen bei 68 verteilt über alle Crates: 40 in ts3level-core (Parser, Obfuscation, Pubkey, Level-Berechnung, Writer, Sign-Prefix-Edge-Cases), 18 in ts3level-engine (Preflight, Driver, ETA, GpuStats), 3 in ts3level-cuda (eine Million Counter Parity GPU vs. CPU, Hashrate-Probe), 7 in ts3level-cli (Smoke-Tests, End-to-End gegen eine echte GPU, i18n).
Validierung gegen den echten TS3-Client
Einfacher aber wichtiger Schritt: nachdem das Tool intern korrekt aussah, habe ich eine reale Identity aus dem TS3-Client exportiert und parallel den vom Tool berechneten Fingerprint und das Security Level mit der Anzeige im Client verglichen. Beides byte-identisch. Heisst: die Algorithmus-Spec stimmt, es gibt kein Off-by-One zwischen meiner Implementierung und dem, was ein TS-Server für die Identifikation tatsächlich sieht. Wer den Counter mit ts3level hochrechnet, bekommt eine Identity, die der Client genauso akzeptiert, als hätte er den Aufwand selbst betrieben.

Pascal (GTX 10-Serie) und älter sind bewusst nicht dabei. Eine Zeile in build.rs ergänzen und neu bauen reicht, dann läuft auch das, nur ist die SHA-1-Performance auf diesen Karten ohnehin nicht konkurrenzfähig.
Installation
Auf Ubuntu, Mint oder Debian sieht das so aus:

Bekannte Grenzen und Roadmap
Ehrlich bleiben:
- 2,4 GH/s auf der 4060 Ti sind nur ungefähr ein Achtel dessen, was thissepic mit hand-optimierten Kernels rausholt. Midstate-Precompute, In-Place-Counter-Inkrement und LOP3.LUT-PTX-Tricks würden das in den 10 GH/s-Bereich heben. Steht auf der Roadmap, aber nicht für den ersten Release.
- v0.1 ist NVIDIA-only. Das
HashEngine-Trait ist allerdings genau dafür gedacht: ein OpenCL-Backend für AMD und Intel wäre ein relativ entspannter Drop-In. - Kein Flatpak bisher. Wer auf älteren Distros sitzt, etwa Ubuntu 22.04 mit glibc 2.35, muss aus den Quellen bauen. Lässt sich machen, ist aber nicht das Plug-and-Play das man von einem Tarball erwartet.
- Pascal und älter brauchen den oben erwähnten Einzeiler in
build.rs.

Lizenz, Repo, Disclaimer

Dieses Tool ist nicht mit der TeamSpeak Systems GmbH affiliiert, von ihr endorsed oder gesponsort. „TeamSpeak“ ist eine Wortmarke der TeamSpeak Systems GmbH und wird hier ausschließlich beschreibend verwendet.
Das Tool kommuniziert nicht mit TS-Servern, umgeht keine Zugangsbeschränkungen, rechnet ausschließlich offline auf einer Datei, die dem Anwender selbst gehört. Algorithmisch dasselbe was der offizielle Client auch tut, nur eben auf der GPU. §69d UrhG (Beobachtung, Untersuchung und Testen von Software) deckt die Black-Box-Analyse ab, aus der die Algorithmus-Specs in Tools wie landave/TSIdentityTool über Jahre öffentlich entstanden sind. §202c StGB greift nicht: kein Bypass einer Zugangskontrolle, keine fremden Systeme, eigene Daten. Mein Versuch einer rechtliche Einordnung steht im Repo unter docs/legal.md.

@codemonkeymike I run FreeBSD on my daily driver laptop and desktop, and have for years. Prior to that I've used Linux on and off since 1996, and professionally since 2000. I've also used Windows, macOS, and (years ago) Solaris, so have some context.
Things I love about FreeBSD: simplicity, consistency, documentation, community, and lack of churn. I have config and setup scripts with sections unchanged from half way though last decade.
You definitely have to choose your models carefully. But I had a good time on my X220, X250, T470s, and my Framework Ryzen 13 is progressing nicely (just needed to swap for an Intel WiFi module, and suspend / resume is still a WIP).
It just depends what you want in an OS.

@eco-g I realised that in general English people are sticking more on big tech platforms than other Europeans.
I see it in my own English family and friends. They’re all on #Facebook , #Instagram, #Twitter, #TikTok. They use it on a daily base. The only messengers in use are #WhatsApp and Facebook messenger.
I tried to bring them over to use #Threema or #Signal instead. No success at all. Not one single contact moved to one of these. Even not as a 2nd option.
I asked them to try #Mastodon instead of Twitter. #Friendica instead of Facebook. #Pixelfed instead of Instagram. #Loops instead of TikTok. No chance. Even the argument that they don’t need to use all of these platforms as they’re all part of the #Fediverse and users on different platforms can interact with each other didn’t work.
Also they’re all using #Windows. Only one is trying to use #Linux now. Stick on the known things seems to matter more than #privacy.
I gave up.

The default XFCE theme on Void Linux also look good. The Void Linux live USB also booted really fast.The PClinuxOS live USB for XFCE seemed to take forever to boot. Progress bar got about half way after several minutes and I just gave up. Void booted into XFCE in what seemed like just a few seconds.
The installer on Void is not as easy to use as the Artix installer.
Void is similar to Artix in that it is also a rolling release distro, but doesn't have the high frequency of package updates that Arch (Artix) does. So it is a much more stable rolling distro that doesn't require multi-gigabyte downloads for updates every week.
XFCE is the only desktop option provided on a live USB installer by Void Linux.
Note: I had to install the 'fastfetch' and 'scrot' packages on the live boot to be able to take this screenshot.

Already I am feeling better about XFCE than MATE. The "Ctrl + Alt + t" keyboard shortcut for bringing up a termal works, in MATE it doesn't by default.
Without messing with it too much, it also seems more easily customizable.

Init vs SystemD
This subject was highlighted in an interesting manner by the author.
The article is also very informative. You will learn a few to a lot of things about both systems.
From my perspective the author seems to have forgotten one important thing.
He stated himself that Init follows the UNIX, not Linux, principle of doing one thing good.
The UNIX principle is way older than Linux itself, which makes me think that the author has not been around long enough, to know how interesting of a monstrosity systemD has become.
Regardless whether you like Init or systemD, you have to know that they have totally different concepts with similar final goals but in different manners.
The philosophies coding styles, modus operandi & configuration, differ so wildly from one to another, that you should not compare them, AT ALL.
Never compare systemD with Init!
Realize one thing, if you do not want to see systemD, ever you have to migrate to one of the more advanced Open Source environments.
You shall be safe in freeBSD, openBSD, netBSD, ghostBSD, Open Indiana, Tribblix, or any of the others which have been around much longer than Linus Torvalds was even an ID {idea} in the balls of his father.
You should also not forget that you can always, write & program your own Init system or modify the current Init system itself, if you are stuck on a Linux flavor.
Stop bitching about which system is better.
They are totally different.
Live with one of them or write your own

Ich arbeite mit #kde und dem Texteditor #kate . Aber so etwas simples wie die zuletzt geöffneten Dateien wird mir nicht zuverlässig angezeigt: Manche sind da, andere nicht.
Kann es daran liegen, dass manche Dateien auf einer anderen Partition liegen? Oder zeigt Kate nur Dateien, die auch von KDE indiziert sind, an? Das fände ich ziemlichen Quatsch.

I am not sure what exactly makes it PClinuxOS, if the base is Debian. It does have the extra software tools that usually come with PClinuxOS.
It has a recent 7.0.* Linux kernel. Has xLibre installed by default.
PClinuxOS is a rolling release, but the repositories for this appear to be Debian Trixie... so is this not a rolling release Linux?
SysV init version: 3.14 - so no SystemD
Would be great to chat with someone who knows more about this Distribution.

That may be a safer bet going from a 5.4.* kernel version than a jump all the way up to a 7.1.* kernel. For context, this would be a manual kernel upgrade on an Ubuntu 20.04 virtual machine.

I manually upgraded a cloud virtual machine (test) running on Ubuntu 20.04 with a 5.4** kernel version to the latest 7.1 kernel available today:

I rebooted and it seemed to work fine. Apache web server is running. Doesn't seem to have any problems, but no load is on it.
Do you think it would be fine to run such an old 20.04 Ubuntu version with such a recent kernel? Or should I find a more recently released 5.** series kernel and try that instead?
I am testing getting kernels patched for the recent Linux vulnerabilities, but need to run older Ubuntu 20.04 for a while yet until web applications are manually ported to run on newer versions.

Que l'IA générative permette de découvrir de vraies vulnérabilités en masse, c'est une chose (et je doute que c'en soit une bonne pour la santé mentale des mainteneureuses), par contre si les gens qui les découvrent pouvaient au moins faire semblant de respecter le principe de non-divulgation au public jusqu'à sa résolution, ça serait pas mal.

Raccoons are problem solvers and capable of opening doors. So I had the idea to give it a real tough conundrum. Finding the last key to open the vault filled with lots of fine treasures.
It is night and a lantern provides warm light. The vault is rusty and surrounded by nature. Branches with leaves and blue flowers are following a stony background to the center of attention.
This little raccoon already found the perfect fit for seven keys. Standing on a pile of several hundreds tossed attempts while trying to get nearer to its goal.
In its left hand holding a ring with three keys with several metal materials and with the right hand a possible solution, a silver key, too busy to turn around and greet us.

Ich hab' hier ein seltsames Phänomen: Ein Dell Notebook mit einem Sierra Wireless LTE-Modem unter LMDE 7 kann mit einer Alditalk SIM (Medion/eplus/O2) problemlos funken, aber mit einer Lidl SIM (Vodafone, funktioniert in anderem Gerät problemlos) nicht. mmcli funktioniert, SIM wird erkannt, aber kein Verbindungsaufbau.

Die Entwickler des auf #Anonymität ausgelegten Live-Systems #Tails haben mit Version 7.7.3 kurzfristig mit einem Notfall-Update auf eine kritische Sicherheitslücke im #Linux-Kernel sowie auf Sicherheitslücken im Tor-Browser und im Tor-Client reagiert.
Hauptsächlich aktualisieren Tails 7.7.3 den Linux-Kernel auf Version 6.12.86 und beseitigt damit die Sicherheitslücke „#DirtyFrag“. Letztere hätte es einer Anwendung in Tails erlaubt, Administratorrechte zu erlangen.

Ich verwende #Linux und unterrichte an einer Hochschule. Die wollen, dass ich #Office365 verwende und Teams. Ab und an haben wir Online-Unterricht.
Es gibt für Linux keinen offiziellen Linux Client als Standalone App. Zumindest habe ich keinen gefunden und der Support der Hochschule wusste nicht, was Linux ist. Also mache ich das alles im Browser. Als ich das das erste Mal machte, war ich geschockt. Meine Eigenüberwachung (Tracking aller meiner Netzwerkverbindungen dank an Little Snitch für Linux) schlug an und an und an. Wieso man für Teams mehrere 100 Netzwerkverbindungen benötigt erschließt sich mir nicht. Ich denke, das ist #Telemetrie und #Überwachung. Danke, Hochschule. Ich vermeide #Google und #MS so gut ich kann.

Aber bei #Astrium war ich bis Sa mit dem #Copyfail #CVE Bug beschäftigt.
Der #dirtyfrag cve Fehler wurde in wenigen meiner 100 Linux VM und physik Linux Servern durch Blacklist der Schad-Module behandelt. Aber zu Überraschung sind die 3 kernelmodule nirgends auffindbar. Oder schon mit dem neuen Anti-Copyfail kernel weggespült🤔

Was mir seit der Neuinstallation von #Arch #Linux partout nicht gelingen will, ist #vim zum #spellcheck in #Deutsch zu überreden.
Meine .vimrc ist unverändert, so wie es in der alten Installation funktioniert hat. Warum es jetzt nicht mehr will, finde ich einfach nicht heraus.

Da es aktuell für stabile Manjaro Linux-Installationen keinen aktualisierten Kernel gibt, ist eine Anleitung zum Absichern von solchen Systemen beigefügt.

🇨🇦I need some help with my linux system. I'm trying to upgrade my openSuse Tumbleweed, but I run into this file conflict, and I don't know what to do about it. Yast only gives me the option to continue or abort, but if I abort, then nothing gets upgraded. But I'm worried that if I continue, it will break something important. Here's what it says:

It'd be great if #GTK & #libadwaita's About dialogs had a property for "Months of support per version", which would check the app's running version against its "date" field in the AppData metainfo.xml and hide the "Website" & "Report an Issue" buttons if it's too old.
Thus upstream devs could avoid being the externalized cost of free "LTS" distros (users reporting issues about ancient versions) without being accused of being anti #FLOSS (like in https://gitlab.com/linuxmint/pins/mint/gnome-calendar/-/work_items/1)

The case for running Arch, Ubuntu, and a real RHEL userspace as long-lived containers on a Fedora laptop. Home directory mounted in, GUI apps integrated, VSCode treats the box as a remote target.
Bonus: on a Fedora host registered with subscription-manager, RHEL entitlements propagate into UBI containers automatically via Podman's default mounts.conf. No flags, no manual bind mounts.

Until now I've never bothered to look into the internals of keyboard software support and whatnot, but for a long time I somehow put up with #Alpine #Linux (or maybe it was a #KDE / #Wayland issue?) not enabling by default key repeat - or however you call holding a button and have it register as continuous holding instead of a single press.
Lo and behold, on #OpenBSD that just works (I just passed by the conf where key repeat is explicitly defined, so you know real people put real effort into this system). On the other hand, changing the language on my keyboard when using cwm instead of something like KDE?...
setxkbmap -layout ro does not output an error, but still doesn't mean it actually switched me to Romanian (however, something like French actually just works). wsconsctl keyboard.encoding=ro outputs the error that ro is not a valid encoding. According to the documentation, encodings are apparently listed in /usr/include/dev/wscons/wsksymdef.h - and indeed, there seems to be no "ro" in there. Changing locale didn't seem to help either.
Then I took a deep dive into the man page of wsconsctl(8). There it says: "The current mapping can be printed with wsconsctl keyboard.map. The value for each keycode specifies the keysym that is output when each of Key, Shift + Key, AltGr + Key, or Shift + AltGr + Key is pressed" A magic thing then happens... I test wsconsctl keyboard.map+="keycode 15 = l L at" - afterwards, I see in the keyboard mapping "l L at at"; the output is a Polish l=L with slash. I decide to test AltGr with every other key on my keyboard...
I burst into laughter when I realized that I do have now Romanian characters: they were hidden in plain sight, usable with AltGr as modifier. I can't seem to spot them in keyboard.map, where according to the documentation all keysyms should be specified. Maybe setxbkmap did the magic on top? At least I am grateful I can type ăâșîț and not have to copy paste the characters.

Maintenant m'attaquer à la montagne : changer d'OS pour l'ordi. Ca a l'air difficile, parce que toute ma pratique de la production musicale depuis 20 ans s'est faite avec Logic Pro d'Apple. Il faudra apprendre un autre DAW, faire fonctionner le hardware, les plugins... Bref y'a du taf

### The sad story of legendary Ian Murdock
• Founded Debian in 1993 at age 20, while a Purdue undergrad
• Name "Debian" = Debra (his girlfriend) + Ian — she later became his wife
• Debian became the base for Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Raspberry Pi OS, hundreds of distros, arguably the most influential Linux project ever
• Worked at Sun Microsystems on Solaris
• Became Chief Operating System officer at Docker, right at the peak of container adoption
• Died December 28, 2015, age 42, officially ruled suicide
• His final hours: a series of distressed tweets describing a violent encounter with San Francisco police (claimed they beat him during an arrest), followed by increasingly erratic posts, then silence
• His Twitter account was deleted by the family shortly after; the tweets are preserved in archives
Debian is still going strong, 30+ years later, without him but his contributions can never be forgotten.
>Although Murdock's parents were both from Southern Indiana,[2] he was born in Konstanz, West Germany, on April 28, 1973, where his father was pursuing postdoctoral research. The family returned to the United States in 1975, and Murdock grew up in Lafayette, Indiana, beginning in 1977 when his father became a professor of entomology at Purdue University. Murdock graduated from Harrison High School in 1991,[3] and then earned his bachelor's degree in computer science from Purdue in 1996.
>While a college student, Murdock founded the Debian project in August 1993, and wrote the Debian Manifesto in January 1994. Murdock conceived Debian as a Linux distribution that embraced open design, contributions, and support from the free software community. He named Debian after his then-girlfriend (later wife) Debra Lynn Roundy, and himself.[4] They later married, had three children, and divorced in January 2008.[5]

He reported having been accused of assault on a police officer after having been himself assaulted and sexually humiliated[21] by the police, then declared an intent to devote his life to opposing police abuse. >The San Francisco police confirmed he was detained, saying he matched the description in a reported attempted break-in and that he appeared to be drunk.[24][25] The police stated that he became violent and was ultimately taken to jail on suspicion of four misdemeanor counts. They added that he did not appear to be suicidal and was medically examined prior to release. Later, police returned on reports of a possible suicide. The city medical examiner's office confirmed Murdock was found dead.[26][27]

Linux kernel developers are reviewing a killswitch proposal that can disable vulnerable functions after recent CVE disclosures.
When I set up this Debian box with ZFS I tried setting up ZFS swap to see how it worked. There were warnings in the OpenZFS docs but I gave it a go anyway.
The system is configured with two fast NVME connected to the CPU and mirrored for the root pool. Swap was created as part of the rpool.
It's a bad configuration. After a number of hours the load average consistently heads into the high teens or higher. Turning off swap makes it drop immediately to ~1.0 (typical for this box running a desktop and futzing around in browsers and shells).
As far as I can tell it's not possible to resize a ZFS partition in situ so I added the swap partition on the third NVME that is formatted EXT4 (south bridge x4).
Not ideal but it is perfectly serviceable.
NVME drives are so fast, would I really notice a difference by the seat of the pants with the swap on partitions on the north bridge connected mirrored devices? Probably not.

vi depended heavily on terminal capability databases to remain
portable across different hardware terminals. Bill Joy originally
wired vi only for Lear Siegler ADM-3A terminals, and termcap was

EDIT: it's not the virtio driver. This VM has 1G ram. If increased to 2G, it will boot. It seems it's the intramfs unable to decompress. And it's strange.
I've just upgraded my Proxmox Backup Server, running inside a bhyve VM on FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE, and it now kernel panics as soon as it boots.
Setup:
- Host: FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE
- Guest Kernel: Linux 7.0
- NIC: virtio-net
Workarounds tested:
- Removing the network device: boots successfully
- Changing the NIC to e1000: boots successfully
This seems to point to a virtio-net issue with this kernel under bhyve.
Has anyone else noticed this?
Niggle that is hard to research...
For anyone running Debian Testing (Forky) and using Waterfox, some video will not play due to Waterfox 6.6.12 not being compatible with ffmpeg v8. It is expecting v7 and I guess there are some videos where the video won't start due to switches, params, or whatever.
My use case was an old Youtube video that I snarfed many years ago and had on my Jellyfin server.
[ Stream #0:0[0x1](und): Video: h264 (Main) (avc1 / 0x31637661), yuv420p(progressive), 854x480, 1100 kb/s, 25 fps, 25 tbr, 90k tbn (default) ]
Waterfox (v6.6.12) won't play it but Librewolf (150.0.1-1) does. Both are installed from PPA, not flatpak.
Forky currently has: ffmpeg/testing,now 7:8.1-3+b1
New stuff plays fine so I hadn't noticed it since ~Wednesday when this box was re-imaged and moved into.
Apparently the Waterfox flatpak doesn't have this problem (probably has it's own ffmpeg v7 bundled inside or has a flatpak ffmpeg dependency).
I could get into the weeds further to confirm but Librewolf works for now. I'll wait for Waterfox to work through it. 🙂

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS est sortie, mais côté serveur ce n’est pas une simple mise à jour “nouvelle LTS, nouveau noyau”.
J’ai écrit un article orienté admins/VPS/homelab : support, OpenSSH 10.2, Chrony, paquets serveur, sécurité, GPU/IA, cloud, Livepatch et stratégie de migration depuis 24.04 LTS.

I dread asking this question here as much as I look forward to it, but...

I am already making a list of all the software I routinely use in Windows (that's how I noticed mp3tag/FormatFactory don't have Linux support), and have all my data on NTFS external hard drives that I've been told I'll be able to move to Linux once I have it.

Je me disais que pour mes clés USB (que je n'utilise que sous Linux) f2fs ça pourraît être une bonne idée, vu que c'est conçu pour ça: plus rapide et prévu pour reduire l'usure.
Et puis comme à chaque fois, je vais lire l'excellent wiki de Arch. Et là je lis : "F2FS has a weak fsck that can lead to data loss in case of a sudden power loss."

I couldn't sleep, so I got up at 5 am this morning.
To kill some time before work, I wrote a new Python-based proof of concept for Copy Fail based on the original, but one that is easier to read (I don't care about the byte size bragging rights) and which does not push a payload into the page cache of a setuid exec (which is bad). Instead it just overwrites text on a temp text file. It works great!
I got the idea from the copy-fail-c implementation on GitHub.
The key to this customization is a program called 'cortile' while brings features of a tiling window manager to X11 desktop environments.
The second is binding a keyboard shortcut to the "Overview" feature in KDE. By default, the Overview is activated by the top left 'hot corner', which I found by accident.
I want to focus on one window at a time and not have to worry about its position. Setting 'cortile' to the Maximized setting and the Panel Configuration Visibility to 'Dodge Windows' gives me what I was looking for.
The Overview is now tied to a keyboard shortcut and acts like rofi would, as a window and virtual desktop switcher, as well as an application launcher.
In KDE System Settings, keyboard shortcuts can be configured for switching virtual desktops and moving windows between virtual desktops. It is a bit fiddly and takes quite a bit of time to figure it out, but KDE does not disappoint with with how much it can be customized.
I think this concept and integration of cortile would also work well in the Cinnamon desktop environment (haven't yet tried it), though Cinnamon may not quite the same feature as KDE Overview.

heute für meinen Vater ein Acer Aspire 1 mit einem LinuxMint installiert. Ich habe ihm KDE Plasma installiert. Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, dass die Angebotenen Meta Pakete von KDE nicht gut zusammengestellt sind. Sogar bei kde-full - fehlte so einiges, dass man nachinstallieren musste.
