If you haven't heard of we're a free software project that's created a hosted package manager (think homebrew or flatpak) and a GNU/Linux distribution.

GNU Guix uses the functional packaging approach pioneered by and adds a user-experience and system configuration system. It uses a DSL that's based on Guile Scheme. You can use it configure your home environment, dev environments or the entire system using a declarative and transactional definition.

We hope to tell people about the project and our latest news. We'd love to engage with people around and more general topics!

In a later reply he explained why having things in -next is important:

I feel the Linux community has missed a great opportunity to get the Windows10 users to migrate prior to the EOL next month.

They should have been blanketing the airwaves over the past year with the message that users can keep their current hardware and move to a modern and secure operating system akin to Windows.

Maybe it because of the fragmented ecosystem or that the Linux community is bad at promotion. There are hundreds of millions of Win10 machines that are soon to be obsolete.

The world does not have to be beholden to Microsoft because of inertia.

What’s more, this activity seems to disappear once I start poking around and looking at running processes.

I’m guessing some kind of cryptominer which is clever enough to try to hide its activity.

It throws a gdk pixbuf error for me and bails out.

This worked unless the file path had spaces in (e.g. /media/paul/WD Backup Drive). I tried faffing about with IFS, read, find -print0, sort -z etc. but couldn't get them to work.

Then I realised the spaces would never be in the filenames, only the path. So I did:

Sadly, it looks like the subsystem has went orphaned recently, and as much as I'd like to step up to maintain it I lack the deeper knowledge about the configuration subsystem (it's pretty out of my field of expertise). What do we think, is there still a way to get the patches merged? If I want to do so, do I send them to the general build system maintainers?

I would say the best is however much used is needed for what the system is doing, and the rest used for cache/buffers, with a small amount free.

Contrary to somewhat popular opinion, it is NOT at all necessarily a bad sign if you have lots of cache/buffers and simultaneously swap usage. Most often that means that the OS prioritizes keeping in-use data in RAM and swapping out less-used data.

But a quick removal of the defective symlinks plus a "corepack enable" did fix those shims again :-)

Curiously, I saw corrupt filesystem reads interfering with the test. That was the start of a journey that eventually led me into the core internals of the Linux kernel.

The issue seemed to occur under very particular circumstances, and was I convinced it likely only affected a very limited set of users - but I was determined to get to the bottom of it. I added diagnostic logging, which confirmed the issue appeared to be inside the Linux kernel. Sadly, when I attached a debugger, all it showed was gibberish.

With this challenge top-of-mind I joined the @why2025camp Dutch hacker camp, a great place to meet interesting people. Here I bumped into @raito who pointed me to a thread on the Linux kernel 'regressions' mailing list where several people were running into a suspiciously-similar problem.

Encouraged by the fact that the impact might be wider than I originally thought, I persevered and managed to get accurate insight from the debugger - revealing suspicious circumstances in the memory management data structures.

With the problem pinned down like this, I felt comfortable sharing my findings on the 'regressions' list. What’s more, I could share not only my description of the situation, but an actually-working Nix configuration demonstrating it. With that, maintainer Dominique Martinet could reproduce the issue within hours and write a preliminary fix overnight.

What looked like a bug in an obscure corner of QEMU turned out to be a subtle issue in the Linux Kernel Memory subsystem that, had we not found it, may have caused countless hard-to-diagnose problems in the future. Happy we could nip it in the bud!

Where did I hop to you might ask? Well, I went to Fedora Kinoite, which is the atomic version of Fedora Plasma edition. I did this, because I mostly worked inside distrobox anyway, and really don't have much need to modify the running system besides a few packages like tailscale. So, if I'm already treating my OS as an atomic distro, I might as well actually run one and get the benefits of easy rollbacks and nice, fast, and safe automatic updates as well.

How well does this work using the Teams web interface? Will I need to run Chrome or will Firefox or (at worst) Chromium do the job?

And do I need to sign in to Microsoft dot com first, or can I just rock up with the Teams call details and enter a name and things will just work?

Services include proper port ranges, protocols, and dependencies.

Turns out the trick is you must keep system volume at 100%, then control everything with the headset wheel.

Basically: unless host = 100%, you hear nothing.

No reboot, no kernel panic. Just... down. Ubuntu 24.04.

The cause? An automatic unattended-upgrade of libc6. This prompted systemd to work its magic, wisely deciding to restart every running service to apply the patch. Fine.

The problem is, in the exact same minute, the systemd timer for certbot decided it was time to renew certificates.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          The result:

I swear, this is the kind of cascading failure that has never happened to me in years of running *BSD. With a classic cron job, certbot would have failed, logged an error, and tried again the next day. The web server would have remained untouched.

I get why the PBS VM might crash - 4 GB RAM, 2 CPU cores, and my internet speed maxes out at 60-70 Mbps - but why does the host server itself hang?

The Proxmox docs are vague on Intel GPUs, so I need a clear guide specific to this CPU. The networking issue is the most frustrating - has anyone seen a bridge drop connectivity when a VM stops? Any suggestions for troubleshooting or fixing this? I’d really appreciate pointers to resolve these problems.

Third issue: on the EliteDesk, VM backups (using default LVM-thin) take ages and often freeze at 1-2%. Shutting down the VM cleanly afterward is nearly impossible, whether I use Stop or Snapshot mode. This also triggers the networking issue. Would switching to ZFS help? How can I migrate to ZFS without losing my current setup?

First issue: on the EliteDesk, I have two Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS VMs sharing a bridge. If I stop or shut down one VM, the other loses internet access, though I can access applications locally. Any ideas why the bridge fails like this? What can I check to fix it?

Other methods exist such as running unattended Debian upgrade scripts, using patch management tools like or , or automating the process with over SSH. My idea is to have an API based solution that relies on Proxmox authentication and authorization. This would also allow third party tools such as to provide automated patch management and even handle guest rebalancing in a way that is similar to DRS without requiring direct SSH access.

Now I am interested to hear if you would use unattended upgrades in general or if you are already running them today.

Might test it out first before fully committing to OpenBSD right away 😛
