Had to compile himitsu and all its dependencies from source. It does not integrate well with KDE Plasma and has not been updated in a while. Vaultwarden stopped working with the official Bitwarden clients. KeePassXC integrates better with KDE Plasma, but is not as seamless as having your password filled for you in macOS, for example. Pass, the Standard UNIX Password Manager takes a weird filesystem approach so entries can't have sensitive titles, not to mention it relies on GPG. There has to be a way to have a password manager that works™, and integrates with your desktop environment/window manager on #Linux and #OpenBSD.

Depuis quelques temps j'ai mon système qui rame avec un coeur en permanence au taquet et des IO stratosphériques. Même après une mise à jour du système sur une session qui ne lance rien (voir captures d'images).
Le process coupable est kworker mais je ne sais pas ce qui lui fait avoir ce comportement.

What are my options for *globally* configuring the effect of multi-touch gestures on a trackpad? I am experimenting with using a trackpad on my main desktop for RSI reasons and I'm finding that it's a little too easy to trigger scroll gestures and tap-to-click when I don't want to. Xfce (current desktop, but I'm not married to it) has options for configuring *some* behavior but not enough.

After a grueling 2,000-hour nationwide internet shutdown in Iran, international connectivity has finally returned to the Parch Linux servers.

This prolonged outage completely destroyed our SEO. Searching for our project yielded zero results for months, which took a massive toll on our visibility and progress. Now that we are back online, I am trying to figure out how to rebuild the lost trust of our international users and effectively promote the project again. Unfortunately, open-source news outlets have rarely covered us unless we directly request a feature.

Despite these hurdles, I am incredibly relieved that the connection is restored and people outside of Iran can finally see our work once more.

Hoping for freedom.

This was a relatively trivial exercise involving adding an additional tty and abusing it with a JSON line protocol to exchange messages with a crappy little daemon.

That worked enough, and was enough to nerd snipe much smarter people than me to look at doing it properly, using the VSOCK API.

Ein NoGo, dass #Microsoft damit das sichere Booten für #Linux Systeme in der Hand hat. Wenn Microsoft sich entschließt morgen keine Linux Bootloader mehr zu zertifizieren, können die nicht mehr mit #UEFI gebootet werden. Man kann das abschalten, kein Problem. Aber hier geht es um das Prinzip. Mit Schuld sind die PC Hersteller, die nur MS Zertifikate im BIOS installieren. Auf neueren PCs teilweise sogar nur die neueren von 2023 und nicht mehr die Alten von 2011, was dann zur Folge hat, das alte Kernels nicht mehr booten.

Ich würde mal sagen das System ist „broken by design“
Linux muss einen Weg finden sich hier aus der Geiselhaft von Microsoft zu befreien. Und die PC Hersteller sind ein Schlüssel dazu. Aber die haben wahrscheinlich alle die Hosen voll, weil sie, wenn sie das unterstützen, Repressalien von Microsoft befürchten müssen.
Das ist auch der Grund, warum so gut wie jeder neue Rechner mit MS Lizenz ausgeliefert wird und der Käufer kämpfen muss das zurück erstattet zu bekommen.

I’ve been working on a native KDE client based on #Carburetor, and I’m happy to announce its release under the name #Karburetor.

The goal of this project is to provide a better Tor experience for KDE Plasma users with a client that fits naturally into the KDE ecosystem, without GNOME dependencies and with a focus on a more native, simple, and integrated experience.

In this release, several parts of Carburetor have been redesigned so Karburetor can run independently from GNOME. The settings, proxy management, and user interface have been adapted to better match KDE standards.

Karburetor now uses native KDE settings and integrates more smoothly with Plasma services. Proxy handling has also been improved, allowing Plasma and KDE applications to directly use the Tor connection.

New features include active Bridge detection, improved support for different Tor transports, and a more extensible architecture for future improvements.

Other than #LibreWriter, I'm fascinated to know about #LaTex editors on #Linux. As a social science person, I didn't know about it. Unfortunately, I ended up running out of time to get things working properly, I really needed Blender in particular this week for work for some complex scenes, and it just wasn't looking like I'd be able to get it workable in time, so I begrudgingly went back to Windows.
I'm not giving up though, this is just temporary, when I get some spare time I'm planning to create a partition for Nix OS and keep tinkering, and I have my config backed up so I can just pick up where I left off. I also successfully installed Nix OS on an older laptop I had laying around which doesn't have any Nvidia hardware, and it went super smoothly and I'm still really loving the OS there.

for those interested in what was happening, when I made this post, the issue was actually something really simple, I just misread the wiki's instructions about how to set up Nvidia Prime lol. My laptop has an integrated intel GPU and the main Nvidia one, and NixOS was exclusively using the intel one. Turns out I just had my config set to Offload mode, but didn't specify anything could use the Nvidia GPU.
At first I swapped it to synced mode but this caused really bad jittering and flickering on the screen. Reverse Sync had the same issue, so I went back to offload mode and actually specified which programs were to use the Nvidia GPU this time, and ran into a bunch of new problems.

Steam and all of the games I tried worked wonderfully right out of the gate, so did Davinci, which I was a bit surprised about (though I didn't do anything particularly heavy to test it) so there was progress at least. Blender and OBS though were still mostly unusable. Blender was running slower than before with everything except rendering, and it still couldn't see the Nvidia GPU as an option for CUDA rendering in the system settings (Now that I'm back on windows I noticed that apparently the intel gpu is also CUDA compatible, but it couldn't see that either). OBS could no longer record my screen or specific windows at all either.

Like I said, I kind of just ran out of time. My plan B had actually been to install Pop_OS if Nix didn't work out since I had gotten that to work on an older PC with a Nvidia GPU in the past, but I couldn't get my drawing tablet to work with it, so I ended up just biting the bullet and going back to windows (I miss not having ads everywhere 😭). There were a bunch of other issues that I was also running into with NixOS as well (e.g. every few startups my wifi card stopped being recognised and the laptop was generally running very hot even when it wasn't doing anything), so for now I'm back on Windows, but I'm keen to keep trying to work this out once I have more free time.

Think heavy and intimidating #beige workstations by #HP, #DEC and #Sun with the power consumption of a regular house hold and metal cooling fans that could slice fingers.

Back in the day, #FVWM2 had some of the same vibe. Also, the original Common Desktop Environment (#CDE), created by some of the major vendors of Unix-like systems created back in the day is still available (https://sourceforge.net/projects/cdesktopenv/). If you're used to a modern desktop, it could be a rough experience for daily use though.

Honestly, I'm quite happy with #KDE #Plasma, and would be thrilled by just the visuals. I'm sure you know where I'm going with this, so without further jibberjabber, I give you: The CDE Plasma Theme! It's delicious! :D

Unfortunately, for of my university mail account, I have to use Microsoft Outlook (I know, I know! Luckily, I’ve set up a redirect, so I hardly ever have to use it).

Tonight I tried using Firefox on NetBSD, but “Something went wrong.”

When I changed the user agent and set it to "Firefox on Linux", everything works fine, no problems, nothing "was wrong"!

In short, I think “Microsoft loves open source" but not NetBSD 😆.
One more reason to keep using it 😈

Well y'all, Linux stuff is happening fast. Cthulhu is a fork of Orca with like lots of stuff. Wine runs Windows programs on Linux.

If Cthulhu is running, the Wine Accessibility plugin is enabled, and the helper package is installed, you should only need to launch the Wine or Proton program normally.

Cthulhu will automatically:

- Detect the active Wine/Proton prefix.
- Start the helper inside that prefix.
- Read supported standard Windows controls.
- Accept speech requests from programs using NVDA Controller or Tolk.

It won’t automatically make custom-drawn or DirectX game interfaces accessible. Those need built-in self-voicing through NVDA Controller/Tolk or future game-specific support. There might also be a short delay of up to roughly two
seconds while Cthulhu discovers a newly started Wine process.

Ma chérie trouvait le son des PC portables pas terrible avec le passage sur #Linux donc j'ai gratté un peu sur ce qu'on a à disposition pour améliorer ça.

Alors je suis direct tombée sur EasyEffects, qui est un peu LE logiciel DSP pour Pipewire, hyper complet, le problème c'est que pour le coup un peu trop dense : y a certes les presets communautaires, mais ça sent le logiciel où vaudrait mieux prendre le temps de bien mettre le nez dedans pour avoir vraiment le résultat recherché.

Donc j'ai testé ensuite une autre recommandation, JamesDSP (à bien faire attention d'aller sur la version Linux, parce que ça partage la base avec une version Android). Celui-ci est nettement plus accessible, j'ai suivi le conseil activation de l'égaliseur avec le preset "Clear", et effectivement de suite juste avec ça, on a un résultat nettement plus quali à l'oreille.

Le seul truc avec JamesDSP, c'est qu'il est potentiellement le choix le plus simple et direct des deux si vous n'utilisez globalement que les haut-parleurs intégrés du PC portable. Si jamais vous switchez fréquemment entre haut-parleurs, casque, enceintes, etc. EasyEffects sera potentiellement un meilleur choix du fait de par défaut définir les presets et leur activation par périphérique.

EDIT : donc ouais, après test sur ThinkPad L440, L460 et L380, le preset "Clear" fait vraiment bien le taf. C'est sans doute pas le pas le plus accurate, mais je voulais vraiment un truc passe-partout et pas prise de tête, et franchement là pour une mise en place en 3 clics c'est impeccable.

What's your experience been like with #USB #audio interfaces on #FreeBSD? I have a spare 1st gen #Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and 2nd gen 18i20 ony bench now.

The 2i4 works natively under #Linux just fine, but the 18i20 requires (last I checked) some finagling with a custom driver. I have not tried either on FreeBSD.

▶️ Server-side encryption ensures that content on External Storage will be encrypted whether users set it up or not
↪️ E2E encryption provides users an easy way to use the Nextcloud sync client to create shares that even the sysadmin cannot see
💾 Users are given 50GB of storage from a large btrfs platter-based pool; users may request more in DMs with valid use-cases; users may attach their own external storage.
