“The UK will not have enough water for future datacentres, the water industry has said in stark criticism of the government’s AI growth plans.

Datacentres rely on large amounts of water to manage the heat generated by densely packed servers. Cooling towers, chillers and humidification systems make direct use of this water, with large volumes also consumed indirectly through high electrical power needs.

Water UK, the trade body that represents water companies in Britain and Northern Ireland, said in a publicly available written briefing to MPs that the government’s water forecasts were “fatally flawed” and “explicitly exclude” datacentres.

It wrote that the government “makes not a single mention of water” in its policy for delivering AI growth zones, its AI for science strategy or its AI opportunities action plan.

It added that the Environment Agency’s most recent national framework for water resources, published in June 2025, also failed to include an estimate of the water demands of datacentres.

“There appears to be an assumption that the country will always have enough water for its economic needs,” the briefing said. “Nothing could be further from the truth.””

I'm into model trains. It's a hobby that attracts people who like to explore. If for some individuals tinkering with LLM fits into that I kinda get their interest.

Over the last half year small companies and hobbyist alike started blatantly sharing LLM generated images though. And it truly puzzles me: in a hobby based around physically modelling a small version of the real world, what's the point?!?

Again, this is just a specific example of the general genAI problem: It makes shit up & most of it will seem OK because you don't know enough about the subject matter to see the harm it does.

Until now we've been able to assume that even lies & misinformation took at least some effort & someone would need a reason for it - but now they just happen, with zero effort or reason.

We also thought the utility of asbestos & leaded gasoline outweighed the harms. We were wrong then, too.

I can't attest about the accuracy of this piece, but it makes a strong argument for why the AI bubble hasn't popped yet despite showing no tangible results compared to the marketing claims: it has devolved into a full-fledged cult and not buying into the faith, even superficially, can cost one's livelihood. And so the public positive reinforcement loop goes on, while in private people are often skeptical at best, and rightfully so.

Belaboring my analogy: cars of the early 1980s advertised safety features, but missed the mark.

My mom used to fold down the back seat & pack 7 12yo's of the cub scout troop in the '81 Corolla hatchback & drive us around Balmur. A crash at 45 mph woulda killed most of us. Seatbelts were also optional in those days.

While current LLM-gen-AI (used without any guardrails) are indeed “unsafe at any speed”, IMO, the best approach is to teach safety, not 0-tolerance.

I'm getting really sick of #AI culture and hype.

It can be useful as a tool, but the people running the corporations providing the LLMs, like Anthropic and OpenAI, are the real reason it's toxic. And the toxicity is spreading.

They direct people to train models on copyrighted data without compensation and push for more environmentally-damaging data centers. They are the ones giving CEOs excuses to replace people with automated tools.

They are the enemy, not the technology itself.

I remember waiting patiently until the next Byte magazine came out, or rather waiting until we could go somewhere to get the latest. I remember even more recently waiting two weeks for the next GLUG so I could ask someone a technical question that no one else I knew would know. And that small meeting was all I could ask. If I asked too much, I was told to read the documentation - usually a cover tbh for the person not knowing themself. I once spent four months researching how to properly pass a shell through screen via a cronjob. I spent over a year debugging why gnu tar functioned differently in a script than bsd tar (this is still the case fyi).

But yeah, all AI is just a scam and even if floss it has absolutely nothing to do with Equity or Access. I've never seen a more poorly argued shame campaign with such narrow sightedness. Not surprisingly, most I see making this claim are either super technical people working in tech, with droves of people in a supportive peer group to assist them. The others? Completely non techy bootleggers using AI fear to sell their activism to the nearest buyer. Obviously, this is a simplification because I'm bitter seeing all the terrible and ignorant anti AI posts.

Lots of talk, lots of opinions ... But I can assure you no one was there when I waited for byte. No one was there when I tried to figure out how to add a database to my BASIC car program on an Apple ][ C in 1989. No one was anywhere to be found when I struggled with MetroWorks CodeWarrior and C in 1992 on a 68k Mac. No one cared or helped when I tried to setup doveadm a year ago. No one cared when I tried to figure out how these advanced PayPal email scams worked and develop sieve rules to catch their failures. No one cares. Trust me.

Now that devs have perceived competition, AI is the boogey man. But/and, for an over talented grade school teacher and Junior college professor who knows a thing or two about maths, generative AI is a blessing. Just like any stats software - you validate the results lol - you don't blindly trust or give in to confirmation bias. People act like they care now ... but once they finish pounding their ideology into the echo chamber, they will also not help. I can assure you of that. And for those that want to be there, they either will lack the time, or lack the specific expertise to help with the lift.

This is the second post where you'd dropped the F bomb....for good reason.

I have so much to say but not sure how to say it but I will do my best. For *years*, I've enjoyed using #Linux both as a hobbyist and professional #sysadmin. The OS is definitely not the one I started with 20+ years ago. Since at least COVID has....well, it's turned into a full blown corporate-controlled high speed sprawling mess. Not necessarily matured just grown exponentially wherever the various powers see fit. For this and other reasons, I am leaning more and more towards #FreeBSD.

Lastly, I will admit there are some #AI niche use cases which do interest me (related to my own hobbies) but shoving it into everything is not a good idea.

The argument that "AI works therefore we should use it" is akin to "Torture works therefore we should use it."

I don't mean that as hyperbole.

The underlying purpose of AI is at least twofold:

1) It puts a layer of abstraction over information.
- Primary Source: Raw data (eg video footage of an event)
- Secondary Source: Analysis (eg Low bias news and analysis of what this event means in the context of other events)
- Tertiary Source: Meta Analysis (eg Encyclopedia entries summing up Analysis)
- Quaternary Source: News Opinion and Propaganda (eg a "News Entertainment" channel that tells you what to think regarding the event)

The purpose of this layer of abstraction is control of information and removing the distribution of information from the actual events. This allows for influence campaigns, tuned marketing, tuned propaganda, and therefore control.

2) Centralization of compute power
- Computers in our hands that we control allow us a lot of power.
- Moore's Law no longer applies to localized compute power so we are in an era of repair and maintenance.

That means two things for corporations. Loss of income and loss of control.
- Forcing us to use centralized compute forces us to continue to spend money
- Localized AI engines still allow for centralized algorithms. (open sourced algos and localized engines dont factor in here as use and usecases are low)

AI is being pushed so heavily because both governments and corporations need it to further their wealth and power.

They push it via both making it cheap and accessible and having a veneer of usability.

This is a similar pattern to "Underpricing competition to drive them out and then jacking up rates when you have a monopoly", "Embrace, Extend, Extinguish" and similar approaches.

So.

I am not arguing whether AI is useful. I am arguing that its use is detrimental to us. In fact, the more it becomes useful the worse it becomes BECAUSE more people adopt it. It hurts us as we use it. It hurts us more as we use it more.

Tying it back, I don't care if torture is useful and gets your desired results. Torture is bad and it hurts us.

Linus is and has always been a tech-bro (or proto tech bro). He has his throne of power and is happy where he is. Other tech-bros want money and influence. They're all the same.

But Linus is wrong.

Tech is politics.

Yes, BOCI was developed only through large-scale violation of law and requires the blood of a certain number of children (BOC) every month to continue functioning and yes, those children must be fed into meat grinders for the supercharged BOC intelligence. I realize that some people really dislike BOCI, but this is an area where I'm willing to absolutely put my foot down as the top-level maintainer. Linux is not one of those anti-BOCI projects, and if somebody has issues with that, they can do the open-source thing and fork it. Or just walk away. BOCI is a tool, just like other tools we use. And it's clearly a useful one. It may not have been that "clearly" even just a year ago, but it's no longer in question today. In late 2023, China launched a commercial underwater data center off the coast of Hainan, and they just followed it up with a massive 24-megawatt underwater facility near Shanghai. It sits on the seafloor, holds thousands of AI-training servers, uses the surrounding seawater as a natural, passive cooling jacket, and gets 95% of its power from offshore wind farms.

​The Pioneer: Microsoft actually pioneered this with Project Natick, sinking a container-sized data center off the coast of Scotland for two years. They found that the servers were actually more reliable underwater because the environment was cold, stable, and filled with nitrogen instead of oxygen (which prevents corrosion).

It's a race microsoft, or anybody, really, just can't win. There is no such thing as 100% secure internet. The only way to have secure data is to have it on computers that are not on the web.

And we need to get back to that - stand-alone software options that don't require subscriptions or logging in online to operate.

I remember when my wife got her first M.A. and took Statistics with Brother Bryan, a Lasallian monk and professor at the old College of Santa Fe. She enjoyed it very much and learned a lot. Bear in mind, though, this was her third degree at that time and her second time taking statistics—unlike many of the other students.

One of the things he required was that the students do all of the Stats 1 curriculum with pencil and paper—no technology. Why? Because it was his belief that students were being deprived of authentic learning by leveraging tech.
In that course, students were required to calculate the test statistic for Pearson’s r by hand, derive the ordinary least squares regression coefficients and fitted values manually, integrate the normal curve to produce mean and proportion estimates while deriving the formulas themselves, and do the same for hypothesis testing of claims—deriving the relevant formulas by hand before applying them.

Now don't get me wrong—some theory and understanding of the roots and premises behind where formulas come from is obviously relevant. But we don't use repeated addition for multiplication when students reach Calculus. And we don't do the limit of the difference quotient for each differentiation by hand every time we need to differentiate a function.

I find the modern discourse on #AI at present to be much like this. It seems to be a majority of non-technical and non-mathy folks exhibiting reactionary fears. I'm sorry, but it's okay to use software to speed up repeated tasks. That's, in fact, the original reason they were developed.

When you first look at these moratoriums, community meetings, and so on, they seem like very authentic and well-meaning public action campaigns. Who wouldn't want to be made aware of big tech playing bad in the space, scuzzy marketing, bad licensing, use in education/kids, etc.? Those are valid concerns. But when pressed about free software AI — whether current offerings or future expansion — the hostility surprisingly increases. Why? It's the horse-and-buggy camp again. Time to do stats by hand and use the limit of the difference quotient instead of the chain rule. Reactionary fear. Sad to see...

(Boy, some humans definitely have a problem... say it with confidence and some people will believe you are right, even if you don't know a single thing. I guess that's how we have ended up at this place in US history. AIs just exploit this via software, instead of some guy in a suit and too much cologne and slicked back hair... )

My cousin had this with Booking.com to check in the tickets 2 days before the flight. Found out that most likely the #KLM flight had been cancelled, but Booking hadn't notified. So urgent action required.

As it happens Booking.com does everything, EVERYTHING, to keep you away from speaking a real human for support. Going from online #AI chat to a #LLM on the phone. "Do you want to speak to support? Please press 2" --> reconnects to another AI. This took hours and hours.

In the end my cousin got KLM directly on the line and they re-booked the flight with "Yeah, that's #Booking for ya, they are shite".

For any company out there: Giving *real* human support is an absolute unique selling point worth some extra money by the consumer.

My cousin swore never to use Booking ever again. I came to that conclusion the previous year on similar shebang.

The quality of after-sales support is becoming a defining factor in so many areas of our lives. How do companies respond when things go wrong? @beasts are very good in this area and its why I now use them for my hosting needs. I've dealt with various companies in many industries which I've switched away from if they are poor at customer service.

On that basis Mythic Beasts' approach to #AI submitted tickets seems entirely reasonable to me.

Beyond responsible AI.

Key highlights:

- if someone says they’re doing responsible AI but has no TEVV (test, evaluate, verify, validate) plan or team, they are not responsible at all

- Who is testing AI now? Only research scientists, engineers, mostly in China and San Francisco Bay Area, and a few select testing labs (mostly in the global north)

- Who is not involved? Blue collar workers, people who don’t do ‘knowledge work’, people who speak other languages, young people, people who AI can impact significantly

- Why don’t people do more tests? Expensive, hard to run, long, static. By the time you’re done, you’ve got to do it again. No guarantee anyone’s incorporating your work or data to fix anything. No feedback loop back into frontier labs (anywhere)

- How to include more people? Use plain English. Be inclusive. Make space for others. Clearly explain this is not only for science or computer people. Be explicit, say this over and over again.

- Teach people to read model cards like nutritional labels. What are the components? What does it all mean?

- Require multilingual benchmarks repeatedly in all model releases. Now they test math, bio risks, but only very few model developers do any multilingual testing at all. Unacceptable as we already know that’s not a future existential risk; that’s a today risk

- Everyone can do testing. There are participatory evals emerging. They should get out of academic / civil society spaces.

- At the same time, be aware of asking those most harmed by AI to bear the costs of AI testing. If you’re building multilingual mental health benchmarks you need psychologists. Just like any scientific study with burden of care.

- Pay people. And not always the same people. If you’re a N American or European lab asking people in the global south, but really anywhere, to work for free, shame on you.

- We don’t have good tools and processes for agentic AI testing and evaluation yet.

I had to do some inventory tasks for #work today at a remote #datacenter. I was listening to #NPR on the drive home and the discussion was on #AI, specifically on how the #tech titans like #OpenAI, #Anthropic, #Google, and #Meta have quietly stepped away from #safety mechanisms as their models improve, the #ethical implications, and #government #regulation. While the quiet distancing from safety is of obvious concern, the discussion on regulation caught my attention.

As one host put it (paraphrasing here) you'd think these companies don't want regulation but that's not necessarily the case. They are looking for regulation that favors them, whether it's getting in bed with the government or squashing out the competition. The bottom line is still about maximizing profits.

The last part was some interesting food for thought and it makes sense. If correct, it's some good indication of where they (and we) are headed.

On the flip side, #ChatGPT and these #LLMs still make mistakes that, unless you have at least *some* previously acquired knowledge on said topic, are believable.

Case in point: A few months ago, prior to one of my lab servers dying, I wanted to host both #Debian and #FreeBSD repos on the box (which was running the former). ChatGPT provided erroneous step by step instructions, including instructions to build FreeBSD Ports on Debian...using apt. 🤦

The big 'mature' five tech companies Microsoft, Apple, Alphabet (Google), Amazon, and Meta (Facebook) [along with their prime GPU maker Nvidia and the rare earth mining & enrichment companies] have all been tightly focused, to the detriment of their customers, workers, & partners but also to the #Public, our shared land, water & power resources, on a massive dog-and-pony show for Private Equity investors to inflate the AI bubble with the ephemeral 'growth' startups as bait. @tylerlwsmith I've written a number of times of the year I spent project managing an early AI news engine in the dot-com boom era.

Even then, we saw some similar things to today. I hope we end up with the same outcome.

We only wanted humans to train the AI, but we eventually had to accept that the AI would always need help so we shifted to "humans in the loop."

At the time, everyone was new and the AI was smarter than our humans. Humans in the loop still seemed like a big win. With the AI engine, novices were able to do things that would have otherwise required subject experts.

Then a funny thing happened. The humans actually did become subject experts so humans in the loop became #AI tools assisting the humans.

For our smarter humans, that too became unwelcome because as powerful as the AI was, it wasn't fully reliable. Once people developed enough expertise, they found it less tedious and made fewer overall mistakes if they just did it themselves.

I hope this arc repeats.

EDPS @Secretary_General Leonardo Cervera-Navas took part in the session "Safe, Secure and Trustworthy AI: Interoperability and Compatibility of Approaches" at the UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva.

In his intervention, he underlined that building global interoperability in AI governance does not require starting from scratch. Instead, it is founded on linking existing policy instruments and collaborative frameworks, with the European Union serving as a primary regulatory anchor.

The Secretary General highlighted how fragmentation across governance authorities creates practical challenges throughout the technology lifecycle: administrative delays, inconsistent safety enforcement, and an erosion of public trust. When different authorities cannot agree on shared methods for establishing rules on AI, companies face conflicting compliance standards for a single system.

He stressed that AI governance is not about fearing technology, but about setting the conditions for trust. The EU's legal basis for the AI Act reflects this clearly: harmonising the internal market to protect health and safety (Art. 114 TFEU) and safeguarding privacy and personal data (Art. 16 TFEU).

"We do not ground planes because flying is risky: we regulate aviation to the highest safety standards, and that is precisely why people feel safe flying. The same logic must apply to Artificial Intelligence" Leonardo Cervera-Navas concluded.

In the near future, AI-powered surveillance systems will be able to track everything we do in public, and much of what we do in private. And if we do something wrong – shoplift, litter, jaywalk, you name it – the system will notice, retain it, tie it to your official government record, communicate that fact to you, and provide real-time alerts to any relevant authorities … and maybe also to the general public. Think of these systems as automated speed cameras, but on steroids. Only they’ll enforce not just speed limits, but any other rule you can imagine. And you won’t receive a ticket weeks later by mail; you’ll be informed about and fined for your violation immediately. These systems will combine powerful AI, public and private surveillance via real-time facial recognition technology and digital tracking, mass databases and highly personalized enforcement. If deployed at scale, they will have profound chilling effects not just on personal freedoms, but democracy and social progress itself. China has been developing its surveillance infrastructure for years. Duan, a Chinese citizen blacklisted by the system after he lost his job and was unable to repay a series of loans. When he visited Beijing, the city’s AI surveillance system identified him by his face at a major intersection and displayed his face, name, and citizen ID number on a large electronic billboard nearby with a message that he was an untrustworthy person. Similar systems are now being deployed across China and integrated with its infamous online monitoring, censorship, and social credit systems. AI surveillance is now being experimented with in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa. According to a new report, the US Department of Homeland Security is rapidly increasing its use of AI-based surveillance, including facial recognition and the monitoring of social media accounts, to keep tabs on immigrants, dissidents, journalists, legal observers and protesters. While the systems are ostensibly used to maintain security and public safety, the real aim is often social control. Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle – a powerful tech giant that works closely with the Trump administration – has said: “Citizens will be on their best behavior because we’re constantly recording and reporting.” The chilling effects are the point.

AI surveillance raises a range of public policy challenges: technical biases, unauditable systems, and inflexible automated law and social rule enforcement that can promote discrimination and undermine transparency, accountability and the rule of law. But we believe the most urgent and long-term impact will be its broader chilling effects. In a new book, Chilling Effects: Repression, Conformity, and Power in the Digital Age, Jon Penney explains how surveillance, technology and power can be weaponized to influence behavior at scale. Surveillance, personalization, uncertainty and authority are all key mechanisms to increase the scale and impact of chilling effects. They cause people to self-censor their words and actions, to become more conformist and compliant and thus easier to manage and control. And the effects are additive: the more mechanisms employed, and the more powerful the form, the greater the chill.

Computerization has long allowed data collectors to track our locations, collect lists of whom we communicate with, and monitor our spending habits – unless we use cash. What’s new is an unprecedented fusion of each of these mechanisms, persistent and unrelenting. On this #CanadaDay I'm struck by how few Americans know their government and the Russians are involved in a psyop in Alberta to incite a separatist movement. The goal: force a populist referendum to leave #Canada and join the #USA.

Albertans are being swayed by glitzy YouTube influencer videos, many of which are #AI generated abroad,, to suggest their lives would be better in the US. You know, Florida mansions, control over immigration, pristine health care, high valued US dollar, and other grass is greener lies. Very #Brexit-esque, Cambridge Analytica playbook.

As the US under this administration seeks to capture and manipulate oil internationally, Hormuz and Venezsudentenland are not enough. They are coming for the Canadian oil fields not with arms, but with algorithmically amplified #disinformation and millions of corrupt dollars to influence an election in their favor. For Russia, cracking Canada means destabilizing yet another Western democracy in the international illiberal project, plus Canada recently signed an agreement to provide drones to the #Ukraine.

How can you help?

I wish I could say call your Congressional Rep, and that might still work in some districts. However, this is digital guerilla warfare, and we still don't have good innoculation against it.

Any information you can get out there on social media --about what it is really like to live in the US (maybe more about how actually likely it is to own a mansion or paying for your health care!), about how disinformation campaigns work, about what happened to democracies that voted to shoot themselves in the face based on peddled lies and are now dealing with the consequences (hello #UK), would help. Please tag Alberta separatism to ensure the message gets out.

And tell your friends. People need to know this is going on.

The Liberal government is all in on the AI hype fuelled by tech giants and wealthy investors.

But people will not stand by: the Carney government can’t race ahead with this world-changing technology without the guardrails we need to protect our jobs, data privacy, land, water and resources.

Just last week, Hamilton put a pause on new AI data centres, giving local government time to enact strong safeguards and make sure some of the benefits flow to people, not just tech giants.

We must do the same nationally. There’s too much at stake.

We don’t want to be looking back and wishing we’d done more once the damage is already done.
