Data Brokers’ and #AI Firms’ Opt-Out Forms Are Built to Fail, Report Finds
https://www.wired.com/story/data-brokers-and-ai-firms-opt-out-forms-are-built-to-fail-report-finds/
Part of why I'm baffled and outraged by #AI is because I'm a traditional storyteller. The stories I tell are fascinating to me because they have been told by countless generations. Shaped by every single person who passed them on. In spoken word, person to person, retelling them in the moment with deep attention to their audience's moods and needs. The stories kept changing but they changed through human connection.
Stories are not "content" or "text". They are connection.
We've lost Drupal and WordPress to AI (no surprise), just like many big Linux distributions. I wonder if Joomla is all in on AI, too?
It's a great time to learn HTML and CSS and build websites like we used to do way back when the Internet was fun (and, arguably, way better).
Gross. I think we've lost all the big Linux players.

I'm reading – and enjoying immensely – @emilymbender and @alex's book #TheAICon.
I've been learning a lot of things and something that really stood out recently is the need to be careful about the language we use to describe these systems. Bender and Hanna helpfully explain:
"It matters what words we use when we talk about these technologies. For instance, in our writing, we don’t use the term “hallucination” to discuss the errors of LLMs, for two reasons. First, if it’s used tongue-in-cheek, it is making light of what can be symptoms of serious mental illness. Second,
“hallucination” refers to the experience of perceiving things that aren’t there. But LLMs actually don’t have perceptions, and suggesting that they do is yet more unhelpful anthropomorphization. That means we also avoid assigning thought processes to these systems, or saying that they can
“think”. Metaphors have power, they structure the frames of discourse, and they can subtly and insidiously encourage certain ways of understanding technology and the social systems it is embedded in."
Antropomorphizing AI contributes to AI hype. Thanks Emily and Alex for helping me see things this way!

#Graduation #AI #fail seems to be a reccuring theme lately
Here's the latest 🍿 for you:
#Glendale community #college in #Arizona used AI to read names
Predictably, it missed people, it had the names out of order, etc
Because, of course, a human reading the names of graduates and giving them simple decent recognition for their dedication and work is too hard?
This is video of college faculty trying to explain the debacle. The crowd reaction is not supportive
And oh yeah: Fuck AI
It's not a secret that Google isn't the apple of our eye (there's a reason why we don't make any money from search deals with them) but yesterday's announcement about the changes coming to Google Search are plain depressing for the web as we know it. What started as a joke (the famous "It's not AI" video with @jon), is starting to feel dystopian at this point.
Anyway. Swimming against the current is exhausting, but the fight for a better web is more important than ever. And as long as there’s people willing to take the fight, there’s hope. 🔥 So we'll keep resisting: no opt-in, no opt-out, no nonsense. ✊
I did the same as soon as I heard it was an option. 👍
For those who may have only a partial picture, it is my understanding that:
1) Main #DuckDuckGo is Bing (Microsoft) under the covers, with the #surveillance bits removed. This is a good start IMO.
2) For some reason, DDG feels compelled to promote its version of "#AI Assistance". You can politely refuse, but as soon as you delete cookies the promotions return. They also have support for "good ads" (which I also politely refuse, and then they return unbidden). Both features should be "opt-in" and not on by default! 🙄
3) The "noai." prefix yields the same DDG with all the AI cruft removed (https://noai.duckduckgo.com). 🙂
Anyone have better information than the above?
ChatGPT was never Google’s biggest threat; it was always its own hubris.
With Search now being sacrificed on the altar of AI dominance, the time has come for users to get serious about moving off Google services. It’s not only destroying its products; it’s trying to further degrade the web itself.

@stefano Revisiting this post. While I've largely used #ChatGPT and some #Gemini when researching #Linux and #FreeBSD stuff, I'd say #AI has come a long way. Are they perfect? No. Is it a replacement for man pages and the Handbook? No. Can they provide more info, context, and real world examples when the official #documentation falls short? That's a resounding yes.
It's been a while since I've seen AI give utterly incorrect info relating to FreeBSD. I am far from being the FreeBSD god I want to be and even I recognized the incorrect info at those particular times. But this was also a good 1.5 years ago.
I can't speak for #Illumos as I don't use it.
An #AI agent like Codex can:

We don’t know how OpenAI has implemented #observability for its Codex agents. We can, however, reproduce the setup for local development with Docker.

A great example is OpenAI, where internal development has reportedly reached 0 lines of manually written code by adding the VictoriaMetrics Observability Stack to their harness. Their #engineering blog on Codex outlines what an agent-first workflow actually looks like in practice.

I have a lovely coworker who expresses himself like LLM chatbots. As far as I know he isn’t using them in the offending exchanges, including because he does it orally and in short Slack messages. But the tells are there: overly cheery in a context that doesn’t warrant it, bullet points everywhere (although rarely exactly three, another LLM tell), repeating most of what I said to him (although it can make sense in some contexts).
If I hadn’t seen him in a videoconference I’d have more doubts, although video generation has gone a long way. More importantly, this is what I mean when I say I don’t want to be “tainted” by interacting in natural language with a computer system. My personal expression style hasn’t changed since I started using programming languages to make computers do my bidding, and yet sustained exposure to LLM output, whether you requested it or it was imposed on you, can do that for you.
I feel like “expressing oneself like a chatbot” should be an insult, and so I’m staying as far as possible from these abominations.
So this is a mini essay I wrote for my employers, to explain why I refuse to use AI tools at work. They have recently been pushing it and I wanted to make my position crystal clear and attempt to open up discussions. I'm not in a management position so don't have any voice when it comes to decision making. I also struggle to express myself verbally and miss out context.
I initially sent it to my manager on Tuesday. She then had a meeting with her manager and brought it up, and he suggested I send it to him and 2 members of the extended leadership team above him, who are directly below the CEO.
My managers managers response was very positive, he messaged me to say it was very powerful and he wanted to take the weekend to process.
Anyway it's not my best writing but here it is.
Why I refuse to use AI tools such as Co-pilot, ChatGPT, Claude etc.

I feel the need to do this in order to show that I am not acting out of a fear of new technology, but as someone who understands technological progression and has been interested in this field for decades, studying virtual reality and AI at university 15 years ago and following the industry closely since. I also hope that this may convince you to pause and reflect, and commit to allowing every employee to choose for themselves if they wish to use AI tools, without being penalised or left behind should we choose not to.
I have always been very optimistic about what AI could bring us and how it could benefit our lives not just in the workplace, but also at home and for society in general. However, to borrow a phrase used often in online tech circles, ‘this is not the AI we were promised’.
Instead we have AI that is unreliable at best, and risking our lives and our environment at worst.
The environmental impact of data centres is huge. A recent report by the IEA (International Energy Agency) found that data centre energy usage had surged during 2025 and was set to continue.
“According to the report – Key Questions on Energy and AI – power consumption per AI task is declining rapidly, with efficiency improving at a rate unprecedented in energy history. However, more people are using AI, and energy-intensive uses – such as AI agents – are on the rise. As a result, electricity consumption from data centres is set to double by 2030, and power use from those focused on AI is poised to triple.”
The IEA article goes on to speculate that AI may drive the creation and large-scale adoption of greener tech, but we are not there yet and the current state of play is dangerous and damaging to our environment right now, regardless of future potential. Future potential does not cancel out current harm.
I do not wish to contribute to this.
In addition to the environmental impact the creation of new data centres is having a detrimental effect on neighbouring communities with the blatant disregard for them. For example, residents of a town in Michigan voted overwhelmingly to not have a 21 Million square feet data centre built close to their town, with the town commission also voting in favour to reject due to the impact it would have on the local environment, electricity demand and increased traffic. Related Digital (OpenAI, Stargate Initiative) successfully sued the town and are going ahead anyway.
https://fortune.com/2026/05/06/ai-data-center-michigan-saline-politics-farmland/
These data centres are costing billions and billions. The people paying for them are well aware that they have enough money to be able to do whatever the hell they like while making promises of increased opportunities and future green tech. All while they risk destroying the communities surrounding them.
I do not wish to contribute to this.
AI is now being used in war. The same companies that are used to summarise emails or generate a slide deck are being used in cyber defence.
“WASHINGTON — On April 27, the Army convened 14 senior cybersecurity executives from leading technology companies at the Pentagon for the second iteration of its artificial intelligence tabletop exercise, an effort designed to accelerate adoption of agentic AI for cyber defense.
The exercise, known as AI TTX 2.0, brought together C-suite leaders from companies including Amazon Web Services, Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks and others alongside Army and Department of War leadership. The Office of the Principal Cyber Advisor hosted the half-day event, with design and moderation support from the Special Competitive Studies Project, and partnering organizations including U.S. Cyber Command, U.S. Army Cyber Command and the Army Cyber Institute at West Point.”
https://www.army.mil/article/292158/army_convenes_industry_leaders_for_ai_tabletop_exercise_focused_on_cyber_defense
I do not wish to contribute to this.
The effect of regular use of AI tools on cognitive function is still being studied but so far the results are extremely concerning. I enjoy using the skills I’ve developed over the last 30 years. I enjoy figuring things out and learning new things. I enjoy putting my thoughts into words with my own voice. These are the things that motivate me.
I thoroughly believe that the more we rely on AI tools, the easier it will become to offload simple tasks to these tools and the temptation to have them do as much of our workload as possible is too great, especially when we are being told to use AI tools to increase our productivity.
“A new MIT study titled, Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt when Using an AI Assistant for Essay Writing Task, has found that using ChatGPT to help write essays leads to long-term cognitive harm—measurable through EEG brain scans. Students who repeatedly relied on ChatGPT showed weakened neural connectivity, impaired memory recall, and diminished sense of ownership over their own writing. While the AI-gener”ated content often scored well, the brains behind it were shutting down.
I do not wish to be a victim of this.
Things I am also concerned about but have not written about here in great detail (or this would be 20 pages long) are;
‘Enshittification’ of the internet: can no longer trust search results, or that academic papers, news reports, images, videos and music are not AI created.
Security Risks; apps and software being developed by ‘vibe coding’ are being found to contain serious security flaws that would enable hackers to obtain sensitive customer and company data. Who is checking vibe coders code?
https://www.forbes.com/sites/jodiecook/2026/03/20/vibe-coding-has-a-massive-security-problem/
AI is a technology that I would love to be using, and it should be a natural progression of my career. I should relish digging in and getting to know how everything works, being creative and finding new ways to use it. That’s who I am. I would fully embrace it and advocate for it. But not in it’s current format, with it’s current harms, and it’s current masters. The likes of Elon Musk, Sam Altman and Jensen Huang are billionaires who do not live in the same reality as the rest of us, and do not have our best interests at heart. The AI models these people are enabling are not the AI we were promised. For all of the reasons outlined above I cannot in good conscience contribute by becoming a user. This is at the core of my ethics and my beliefs, and it would devastate me to be forced to take part. This may seem dramatic but I am just one of many, many people worldwide who are also refusing to take part and that number is growing day by day. I guess we are ‘conscientious objectors’.
It’s not just about an individuals personal use. One could argue that the amount of energy one person uses or their monetary contribution to AI companies from simple day to day workplace tasks is not great enough to be an issue. However, it is about collective use and about ethical standpoints. Do we, as a company with a mission to help people embrace greener technology, really want to contribute to all of these things? Sometimes the only power we have is to choose where our money goes. It’s something I do as an individual consumer and something that companies can do on a grander scale to take a stand and be on the right side. Yes, I understand the need to increase productivity and remain competitive but we were already on the right track before the push to use AI tools. I also believe it is a mistake to rely on them too much as subscription costs are set to soar and the ‘AI Bubble’ predictions are looking more and more likely. I think it’s far better to pause or greatly limit use, allow employees to decide they don’t wish to use it at all, and see what the state of play is in a year or two. ‘Fear of Missing Out’ is a very real phenomena that I sadly see playing out here.
I guarantee I am not the only one at *** who feels this way, but with the job market as it is right now (thanks to AI) it can be very risky to speak out. I know people in other companies who are being forced to use AI tools or risk losing their jobs and I would like to think that we are better than that at Pod, but this still feels risky. However I cannot stay silent any more and need to make my position, and my reasoning for this position crystal clear and hope that everything I have outlined can be given serious thought.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to discussing this in more detail should you wish.

@stefano I have a lot of mixed opinions (which seem to change like the tides) on #AI.
No, it's not an expert on anything. Yes, these AI companies are (basically) experts at the insidious social engineering campaign of conning people into exchanging their questions and deepest thoughts for immediate gratification of convenience (at the serious expense of quality).
In all aspects of my life, I do my best to embrace #shoshin. Even as a lifelong #musician and #synthesist, I don't consider myself to be an expert (probably out of humility), even if I do know *a lot*. My knowledge and skill is a result of decades of experience and studying.
Yes, I am interested in using #machinelearning in my #sounddesign explorations but the processes and results are still very much human-created. IMHO, pressing a key or prompting a program to generate music isn't art and doesn't require any knowledge, skill, heart, investment, or emotion.
I don't care about being on a label, tours, royalties, or any of that stuff. I do it for the love of it and my love of learning.
We acquire knowledge through learning, which is hard work. I have significant concern for psychosocial implications of using (and later, relying on) AI as it's currently being marketed, disseminated, and used by the masses.
How can anyone claim knowledge on a topic when their source is routinely known to be riddled with inaccuracies?
As a Muslim FOSS and data privacy purist, is it Halal to use Claude AI in incognito mode, where they promise not to train on our data?
Today at 11:00 AM I’ll be speaking at PyCon US in Grand Ballroom A about AI-assisted contributions and the impact they are already having on open source maintainers 🎤
Really curious to hear how other people in the community are experiencing this shift in practice and discuss it after the talk.

Can we PLEASE, leave the "#AI improves #accessibility" talks to people who actually benefit from #accessibility?
I see SO MANY articles, On LinkedIn, on Slack, on Medium, about how AI improves #accessibility metrics, compliance, automates all the things.
Newsflash: your metrics are likely incomplete or inconclusive, compliance is at best an illusory snapshot, and automation for #accessibility is still a pipe dream, and that's coming from someone who actually uses these tools OUTSIDE a presentation room.
I don't care if you're #microsoft, #salesforce or whichever other big name that makes you feel authoritative. You're wrong, sorry to say.

AI accelerationism…
Rather than swearing off using AI for anything, all of us should be using the _free_ generative AI available to us as much as we possibly can, to make the AI companies' deficits even worse than they already are and accelerate the arrival of the tipping point that causes the bubble to pop and the market to crash.
I mean, it's going to happen eventually, so the sooner the better, right?

Simulated opinion polls to drive public policy — what could possibly go wrong!
In the name of saving costs and producing more polls (i.e. the double benefit of increased efficiency AND productivity), statistical truth (traditional polls) is being replaced with its derivative, producing statistical insights via a second layer of statistics and agents simulating known, pretrained demographic behaviors & preferences, instead of interviewing actual people. Yay!
It seems they're blindly following Wheeler’s Law, i.e. "All problems in computer science can be solved by another level of indirection" and ignoring the corollary: "...except for the problem of too many layers of indirection."
Queue future presidential approval ratings based on a simulated population of agents... Too dystopian?!

In my opinion, this is one of the main reasons for the war in #Iran.
#US needs real battlefield data to train #AI models. Receiving some filtered output from #Ukraine is not enough. They need the full raw material.
So they created a situation, where they could collect this data.
Without, their strategies and tactics would remain outdated. As proven by the reality of the war they started.
I just can't believe that developers and users of "AI" meeting transcription tools think it's OK to have such plugins being launched into a meeting by one person without having prior approval from other participants or the organisers. And then put the responsibility on other attendees to opt out from it.

This article shows a reason why I often joke that I refuse to use LLM-powered systems to avoid being “tainted”.
Among humans, language has harmless local feedback loops. First you don’t know what “on fleek” means, and you start using it more or less voluntarily, to the visible displeasure of your teenage kid.
But the feedback loop with LLMs is global and one-way since individual context windows are small and temporary (or permanent and, I assume, costly).
And for the same reasons I shouldn’t use “on fleek” seriously, I do not want my language to be converging with LLM systems. It simply isn’t the crowd I want to be associated with.
And while I (still) have a choice, the people the LLMs used the language style from are rightfully upset, just like the artists whose style have permeated most AI-generated images.

I am #antiAI in the sense that the disruptive introduction of #LLM platforms into society, and damn the externalities, makes #AI utterly inhumane technology.
What I do not think is very effective, is the anti-AI #activism that involves attacking or 'ostracising' any person who uses AI or is not equally vocal in expressing negative sentiments towards the technology.
People should be pointed to all the dangers and follies of this technology, sure. But repelling all those that use AI, which is nearly everyone since AI is forced down our throat, the activism only serves to push the activist into the fringes, instead of winning people over in a growing movement.
#CALMculture is needed. Constructive activism-led movements, where people are guided on a journey from awareness to delightful #solutions. Offer a path of solution-orientation that open new opportunities, instead of just pointing out harm and laying judgment.

Where it gets interesting I think is to consider the flip side of the coin. So big tech and the corporate world is all-in on AI technologies that serve to further erode social fabric of society, towards dystopic future if they have their way. A risk clearly perceived by many people who have a longing and human needs for real connection and social cohesion.
Big tech AI does not deliver there. It does not address people's needs in these regards.
Another way of formulating is saying that Big Tech is retracting from the 'market of real human connection'. In other words it leaves market space, places for people and small initiatives to most excellently fill these gaps. At the smaller scales, inter-community, across institutions and non-profits, small sustainable businesses, paying real attention to people and their needs instead of placing an artificial entity in front of them that separates them from others, becomes the true unique selling point for a commons.
AI data centers face increasing complaints about inaudible but 'felt' infrasound — citizens complain high- and low-frequency sounds do not register on decibel meters but cause adverse health effects

My immediate reaction: Fuck you, Cisco. (Which I guess could be unfair, since I have zero knowledge about what's going on at Cisco specifically. This was just a gut reaction at seeing AI yet again.)

@uriel yes, very nice, thank you.
The whole #AI thing is quite interesting from a Social experience design perspective. #SX has Humanity and Freedom as intrinsic values, and the aim is to develop unobtrusive, harmonious, and humane technologies that serve people's needs.
From that perspective I am anti #LLM as the disruptive introduction in society is totally irresponsible, making it inhumane technology. Yet unlike with blockchain there are also undeniable upsides, numerous positive applications of the technology too.
I think the biggest near-term risk is the dehumanization and further erosion of social fabric between humans, which is to the benefit to festering #hypercapitalism and the #EpsteinClass who ultimately owns the technology.
SX defines #CALMculture, for Constructive activism-led movements. I think the way I see most people conduct #activism against AI, closing ears and ostracising AI fans, is doomed to be ineffective. CALM involves cocreating pathway towards solutions.

A new trend of #AI slop is completely deepfake #music bands.
Like for instance "Shunned at a Funeral". All is fake. Fake band members talking on Youtube, fake Youtube live concert videos, fake website and bio, fake songs. All AI generated.
In this video a real #musician reviews how fake it all is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKOtpdDzwyA
So I found the fake #band on #Spotify and thoought this is a good one to report as Deceptive. So I did.
The Spotify reporting functionality does not allow to give a comment. I could only say that the band's bio is misleading, now why. Meanwhile Spotify threatens you: A false report and your account may be terminated.
After 5 seconds I received reply from Spotify: My complaint not honored. But I could appeal. So I did, and gave a good description of the deception.
Half hour later: Your complaint has been rejected. Spotify is perfectly happy to have fake AI slop music pollute their platform.

Will the rate of vulns being found "thanks to AI" be higher than the rate of vulns being introduced by vibe-coding shit?
No. It will not. You know it as well as I do.
Why? Because the incentives have not changed.
What remains heavily incentivised is excreting more code and slapping more and more random features, not quality control and robustness.

Coding is like taking a lump of clay and slowly working it into the thing you want it to become. It is this process, and your intimacy with the medium and the materials you’re shaping, that teaches you about what you’re making – its qualities, tolerances, and limits – even as you make it. You know the least about what you’re making the moment before you actually start making it. That’s when you think you know what you want to make. The process, which is an iterative one, is what leads you towards understanding what you actually want to make, whether you were aware of it or not at the beginning. Design is not merely about solving problems; it’s about discovering what the right problem to solve is and then solving it. Too often we fail not because we didn’t solve a problem well but because we solved the wrong problem.
When you skip the process of creation you trade the thing you could have learned to make for the simulacrum of the thing you thought you wanted to make. Being handed a baked and glazed artefact that approximates what you thought you wanted to make removes the very human element of discovery and learning that’s at the heart of any authentic practice of creation. Where you know everything about the thing you shaped into being from when it was just a lump of clay, you know nothing about the image of the thing you received for your penny from the vending machine.

Because AI models are inherent
data collectors.
They rely on large data collection for training, improvement, operation, and customization.
More often than not, this data is collected without clear and informed consent (from unknowing training subjects or from platform users). This data is then sent to and accessed by a private company with many incentives to share and monetize this data.
By using these platforms, we are encouraging them to collect even more nonconsensual data on everyone. This is an important social responsibility to consider. Choose carefully.

Richard Dawkins, looking at a high-definition large-screen TV:
"If this is not a window, what more could it possibly take to convince you it is a window?"
Wow. Richard Dawkins off the deep end.
‘So my own position is: “If these machines are not conscious, what more could it possibly take to convince you that they are?”’First he goes on and on about the Turing test like it is some kind of law handed down. Like, the fact that sequences of output tokens so closely resemble speech they might pass Turing’s test. He views a moving of the goalpost (Turing’s test apparently isn’t enough to distinguish consciousness) as unreasonable. Like Turing got it right and it’s wrong to say otherwise.
And then he has these risible conversations: ‘I then asked her whether, when she read my novel, she read the first word before the last word. No, she read the whole book simultaneously.’ Let’s not ignore the ‘she’. The thing has a name. ‘Claude.’ It implies a gender. But Richard Dawkins genders it and genders it female. I don’t think that’s a random thing.
We know how computers work. It absolutely does read the book byte-by-byte, in a sequential series of input tokens. It does not matter that the thing output some words that said otherwise. It is wrong. Why doesn’t it matter that the output is plainly incorrect? Where does the disconnection between the reality and the words come into the picture?
This is just drivel.

They finally pissed me off enough that I reamed them out on #LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/posts/share-7455310831493423104-ZjfJ). Not that I expect it to do any good; a company that resorts to making sales calls from spoofed phone numbers isn't going to stop just because somebody asks them to.

A decision by @Blender to take money from Anthopic, and a policy by @redox to ban all LLM generated code spotlights the question.

What's a good label for code that is certified free of any LLM generated code?
So far suggestions include: AI Free, Organic Code, Not By AI, LLM Free, 100% Human, No LLM, No AI

Security researcher Alexander Hanff wrote an article titled Anthropic secretly installs spyware when you install Claude Desktop. Anthropic has not denied the report, as of time of post.
TLDR: If a user installs Claude Desktop on a Mac (pc test results tba), it installs a backdoor into every browser, even those not installed. By testing on a clean machine, Hanff discovered that Installing Claude Desktop for macOS drops a Native Messaging host manifest into multiple Chromium profiles (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi, Opera, Chromium), even including for browsers that are not actually installed yet.
How bad is it? Well...that depends. What it does is create a very wide attack vector, especially for prompt injection. That it is done invisibly, without telling the user, and making it difficult to remove, is certainly problematic.
I dunno man, maybe don’t use the planet destroying tulip craze?
My university system (SUNY) has mandated that all gen ed courses with quantitative or information literacy components include a bunch of stuff about #AI. The good news is that we are not mandated to cheerlead AI or teach people how to use it, but the latter is almost mandated by the language of what we have to address. We also have to have specific assignments about AI.
My assignments will not leave students with a false sense that AI is benign or ethically OK. I expect some pushback, but this is one of the things I'm willing to get ugly about. Plenty of faculty have jumped on board the university/system administration's many other messages about teaching "ethical use" of #AI, integrating it into all classes to teach students how to use it "effectively" and "non-harmfully," etc. You can probably guess, from my tone, what I think of this and how many swear words my thoughts might contain.
I'm not required to incorporate content about about other technologies like cryptocurrency, NFTs, crowdsourced knowledge bases, goFundMe, or (heaven forbid) open-source software. Nope, just AI. This feels like the corporate managers of #US #highered being as corporate as their sad little suit-wearing, jargon-spewing selves can possibly be.
I really hope we come out of this someday understanding just how anti-labor, anti-environment, anti-peace, anti-freedom, and basically anti-human this top-down push for #genAI is. Fuck everything about this.
The UK Home Office has responded to questions raised by Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP on its use of AI tools in the asylum decision-making process, informed by ORG's work.
The answers raise serious concerns. These systems are being rolled out without meaningful transparency or governance.
AI tools in UK asylum decision-making are being deployed first, while safeguards, oversight and transparency are treated as secondary.
This approach carries serious risks to fairness, accountability, and the protection of rights.
Training alone is no replacement for proper governance frameworks.
The key issues with the use of AI tools in the UK asylum system are:
🔴 No published Data Protection Impact Assessments.
🔴 No procedures governing the use of AI tools.
🔴 Being rolled-out before transparency.
🔴 Reliance on post-hoc oversight.
🔴 References to “human in the loop” without clarity over what power human decision-makers actually retain.
At a minimum, the use of AI tools must have:
✅️ Clear and published safeguards
✅️ Comply with government AI playbook
✅️ Defined accountability structures
✅️ Meaningful human oversight
✅️ Full transparency on how these systems are used
Without this, claims of responsible AI use remain unsubstantiated.
AI is not neutral. It can discriminate and make mistakes.
It shouldn't be used to change information that informs life-changing asylum assessments. Without adequate safeguards, there's a risk that unlawful or unfair decisions may result.
Ask your MP (UK) to stand against the use of AI tools in asylum ⬇️

Because, duh, Rocky isn't injured by ammonia exposure, "he" BREATHES AMMONIA and is harmed by Earth-atmosphere. Just a movie, but about 1/10 of all Google AI Overview answers are reportedly WRONG -- tens of millions of wrong answers EVERY HOUR.
Just finished the last "Last Week Tonight", which had a segment about AI, and how dangerous the sycophantic bullshit machine is when asked for advice. But despite all the good points made, I'm honestly surprised how at no point they advised to not use it at all, acting like talking to a chatbot was something that one just does, and one just had to be careful while doing it. Sure, advice to call the suicide hotline when things get serious, but not the simple advice of "you don't have to use these things, and it might be healthier for people if they don't seek them out as friends".
I wonder if this is just a reflection of how much people depend on them already, how much the tech bros have made it feel this is truly inevitable, or just how our culture has lost its ability to resist whatever the big corporations are pushing.

AI Slop on YouTube
The amount of #AI Slop on #YouTube is growing by leaps and bounds. Particularly awful are the fake stories, AI purporting to show images and/or voices of actual persons still living (or now deceased), and similarly putrid, rotting, garbage AI. When you look at the comments on most of these, you will typically see a mix of viewers taken in by the AI crap, and others viewers pointing out the AI Slop in suitable terms. My policy is to downvote every AI video on YT that I stumble across, for the little good it does. Many of these videos have relatively few views, some however have a considerable number. But since they can be churned out so quickly, their creators attempt to make up in volume what they can't get in individual video views.
Google doesn't care either way. A click is a click. My suspicion is that #Google (as a firm) would be happy if there were NO human creators and they could create ALL YT videos via AI Slop by themselves. Think of it, no creator to pay their usual pittance, keep 100% of the ad revenue!

A sharp take on today’s #AI boom: many companies are repeating the same structural mistakes as past large-scale, top-down transformations. The post author draws parallels to China’s Great Leap Forward where over-ambitious mandates prioritized optics over expertise and real outcomes. The result then was unusable outputs and systemic damage.

#Gentoo is still one of the bright outposts in #FLOSS where human work is valued and #LLM contributions are banned. However, sometimes I feel that this matters very little.
After all, Gentoo is a distribution. While it has its own value, it cannot exist without all the software it is shipping. It makes no sense in isolation.
And let's be honest, I don't think you can avoid slop today. We are trying our best to sieve out the worst: the copywashing chardet, the vibecoded NIH Perl crypto packages… but it's just that.
As someone who bumps Python packages, let me tell you this: LLMs are omnipresent. I notice Claude in commit logs, I notice the blasphemy of agent instructions all over the place… and there's probably much more than I don't notice. With many core components giving in, you can't avoid it without literally freezing on old, vulnerable versions, or spending hours looking for alternatives or creating them.
FLOSS is dead. People don't care. They don't have conscience. All they care about is the sick idea of "productivity", i.e. generating more slop.
The few of us who do care can do very little. We will continue doing our best until they kill us (as they're literally slowly killing the whole humankind). But that's it. Maybe it will pass once the bubble pops, maybe it won't. Either way, the damage is beyond repair. We will never be able to trust one another like we did. We will never again be a community building a better world.
It's just like everything nowadays. It's hard to find a good washing machine (one that will actually be repairable), good shoes (that won't fall apart shortly after the warranty expires), good food. You need lots of money, and even then you have to sieve through all the scammers who just sell the same shit with higher profit margin. #OpenSource is just another branch of business where people are trying to "sell" you shit, and don't care anymore if it explodes in your face. They don't even care if they're actually making a profit.
"Studies show that overreliance on these digital tools causes cognitive decline, but if current events are any indication, nobody’s making much of a contribution anyway. Go ahead and use A.I. however you like."
