I am currently working on a basic course about for people in my local Makerspace.
Ofcourse, you can't really understand Linux without knowing how the state of Unix where in the 80's and 90's - so ofcourse, I am spending atleast 20 minutes talking about it.

What is an aspect that I should'nt miss?
Ofcourse, I'll bring up and the role if played for the success of the Free Operating System that most of us refers to "Linux" today.

Anything else?

You decide when to install updates and reboot your computer!

Security updates are critical. They should be done early and often to keep your computer safe.

But you don't want your device to force an update - and then reboot - while you're working.

With , the decision when to update is yours.

With 1-2 more years of work, it could reach a state similar to Desktop Linux or Android ROMs, where everything works, at least on a good number of devices.

Can't donate? That's okay. What they really need is contributors anyways. Together, we can beat Google!

Of course, this was the first public outing for the colossal collaborative project that is now known as Linux. Above, you can see Torvalds' first posting regarding to the comp.os.minix newsgroup. The Vulcan decoders are a fantastic addition to the Arsenal of ffmpeg. If a codec is specifically designed to run in parallel it can be implemented in the Vulcan 🖖 way

The speed up with these codecs can be significant

The image displays a text excerpt on a dark background, likely from a mobile device screen. The text is in white font and discusses the addition of a new class of decoders and encoders based on pure Vulkan compute implementation. Vulkan is described as a cross-platform, open standard set of APIs that allows programs to use GPU hardware in various ways, including drawing on screen, doing calculations, and decoding video via custom hardware accelerators. The text mentions that decoders use the same hwaccel API and commands, making them easy to enable with Vulkan decoding. Encoders, such as ffv1_vulkan, require specifying a new encoder. Currently supported codecs include FFv1, ProRes RAW, and VC-2, with ProRes and VC-2 implementations in review for the next minor release. The text concludes by mentioning that these new codecs can provide significant speedups and open possibilities for non-linear video editors and lossless screen recording/streaming.

I was sitting nearby but she accomplished the task all by herself. I just explained what "LVM" means as this was not explained properly by the Debian installer.

The video has 1K views and was uploaded 5 months ago. The browser's address bar shows the URL "www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v9m5d1DIrE." On the right side, there are related video suggestions, including titles like "Linux Survival Guide 2: Running Windows Applications" and "The Making of BSD."                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       - it allows them to not modify their existing computer at all;
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      - it will be their *long term* portable Linux, that can be used with (most) other computers.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      The one big caveat:
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      - for each run-time host computer, they will need to find out how to have it boot from USB.

I like , I do. But a subset of people on here have a serious case of the smug going on and it's frankly vile as fuck. I'm referring to people who go "This wouldn't have happened if you'd just switched to " when someone has a computer issue. Or people deriding others for being on which isn't properly proper centralized(tm) and har har dee har when that social network does something that allows folks on here to feel superior.

It's akin to that guy at parties who's seen the light and spends the entire time convincing others to buy a hybrid, or go on a keto diet, or try essential oils and yeerety sneer if you don't intend to smoke whatever they're smoking.

Like a roomba, but for the bottom of the pool. We call it poomba. Anyways, I want to shoot an MP4 video with a stationary camera (a GoPro) looking down on the pool while the robot does its work. So I will have this overhead video of like 3-4 hours.

I want to kinda overlay all the frames of the video into a single picture. So the areas where the robot drove will be dark streaks (the robot is black and purple). And any area the robot didn't cover would show the white pool bottom. Areas the robot went over a lot would be darker. Areas it went rarely would be lighter.

I'm just super curious how much coverage I actually get. This thing isn't a roomba. It has no map and it definitely doesn't have an internet connection at the bottom of the pool. (Finally! A place they can't get AI, yet!) It's just using lidar, motion sensors, attitude sensors and some kind of randomizing algorithm.

I think of it like taking every frame of the video and compositing it down with like 0.001 transparency. By the end of the video the things that never changed (the pool itself) would be full brightness and clear. While the robot's paths would be faint, except where it repeated a lot, which would be darker.

I could probably rip it into individual frames using and then do this compositing with or something (I'm doing this on ). But 24fps x 3600 seconds/hour x 3 hours == about 260K frames. My laptop will take ages to brute force this. Any more clever ways to do it?

I read 10 different opinions on how to do it, b/c the first 9 are unintelligible, sound too risky, or just don't work.

Eventually, a "solution" makes everything unstable. I have to stop and research to figure out if/how I can go back to zero.

There is no standard packaging format among distros (something that I don't think will be resolved any time soon) and I've always viewed third party packaging tools like and with skepticism, mainly from a perspective.

I realize the culture of Linux "fix it yourself!" and I tried. I got a buddy to help. We couldn't figure it out, so I paid a professional to fix it and then tell me how she did it.

I want to normalize this. For Linux to be viable, it can't just be a hobby OS. Paying pros to fix it, and set it up for you, is part of that.

If you're KIND, you might get some to give it a try and stick to it bc they know they can ask for help. If you're unkind, you're showing them using Linux will be *worse* than Windows. If you can't bring yourself to be kind, then SAY NOTHING. Let others pick up that slack.

Said Windows will not boot. I disabled Secure boot in the perfunctory bios and enabled usb boot but the machines still won’t boot from USB because is insane. There is no legacy option. The windows boot loader is the only option in bios and it just forces windows.

And it’s clear Bitlocker has its fangs in more than the HDD but CMOS/BIOS too. Thanks.

It feels ... sluggish. Just... not a great experience at all. I've come to expect the Fedora/Linux experience to be the baseline of what an OS/UX/UI fluidity should feel like. And I'm using Gnome. Imagine when the day comes and I switch to hyprland.

We’ll talk about the costly operations that are involved, such as VM exits, VM entries, context switches, and userspace processing by Qemu. Then we’ll introduce vhost and elaborate on how it addresses these issues by moving data-plane operations either into the kernel (kernel-based vhost) or into a specialized userspace process (via vhost-user).

Debian 13 is good.

I have a few setups based on and , and they're solid as a rock. I like them both: OmniOS is more "malleable", while SmartOS is more of a hypervisor like -ng or - meaning you install it on the host and delegate everything else to the zones.

For example, imposing RAM limits in jails works, but it effectively "denies more ram" to a process when it requests more memory. The end user doesn't see this directly. On illumos, the user sees everything. I have some `lx` zones with Debian and Virtualmin, and users have never noticed that they aren't really on . A free or top will show only the assigned RAM.

The Linux Foundation is a 501(c)(6) organization; it explicitly exists for the benefit of its members. This is in contrast to 501(c)(3) organizations, which are explicitly for the public benefit. The FreeBSD, NetBSD, and Plan 9 Foundations are 501(c)(3) organizations. I am less well-versed in Canadian tax codes, but my understanding is the OpenBSD foundation is their equivalent of a (c)(3). LF is a notable outlier here.

I then successfully downloaded and installed DEBIAN (only 1 disc), but got a command line prompt. After testing every DOS/NT command I knew, I never got a GUI, so I went back and burned the proper Fedora Core installer (another 5 discs).

But the replacement key, which has been available since 2023, may not be installed on many systems; worse yet, it may require the hardware vendor to issue an update for the system firmware, which may or may not happen.“
