Ich glaube, dass ich soeben eine neue Lieblingsdistribution für den Bereich #Linux-#Gaming gefunden habe.

Alright, I feel I am at a loss with no idea how to proceed.

New notebooks appear to be only able to boot from USB sticks formatted in fat32.

All the Linux tools for creating a bootable USB drive only seem to make the sticks formatted in iso9660.

Is there anything I can do to install Linux on a notebook? I never had this issue with any of my old notebooks before.

Recorded the last guitar parts. Did the solo like 20 times. When I initially worked out the solo it was at 167bpm. Now it's 175. And 2/4. And someone was watching me. I didn't really nail it but I'll pull a Quincy Jones with some cutting and pasting.

Very happy though that Sander, the other guitarist from @jeremy@mastodon.classicyou.nl, laid down some solid parts.

Now I gotta mix the whole lot. And do the vocals. It's going to be a busy weekend.

I'm about to nix Win10 on my PC and move to Kubuntu. So I'm looking for ways to keep my habits and processes in Linux.

One thing that really works well for me is Sticky Notes.

I just tried to recreate that on my Kubuntu laptop and failed *miserably*.

Knotes crashes when I try to make a new window.

The Kubuntu widget is beyond clunky to operate.

Indicator no longer works.

grep is a very important command. grep is considered complex by many for no well funded reason.

Why this bold statement?

There are not only man pages available, for all POSIX Operating Systems, but also very good tutorials, even in de Linux documentation project.

Don't think that you'll be able to learn high level grepping in just two, to five minutes. grep is a tool great at doing one thing in a great manner, pure Unix wise.

However

ls -R ~/your_dir | grep string

is already a simple level of grep usage

Grund, in den Einstellungen zum SMTP war der Port plötzlich 465 und nicht wie zuvor 587 (submission). Wie kommt man auf solche Ideen bestehende Einstellungen mit oder ohne Update zu ändern (die Zugangsdaten für das Login waren ja auch noch da).

Naja egal, man braucht sich halt nicht mehr wundern oder ärgern warum so viele bei #Microsoft oder #Apple kaufen.

I arrived in the #OpenZFS world just under three years ago with basically no reputation or profile. I was unbelievably fortunate to meet a couple of people early who were extremely generous with their time and willing to lean on their own networks to open doors for me. There’s no question in my mind that without that early support, I would not have had the success and the opportunities that I have had and continue to have.

One of those people, @dexter is now in need of our help. If you haven’t met him before, he’s the host & moderator of the Production User Calls[1], covering #OpenZFS, #bhyve and jails/zones. The amazing thing about these calls is that they attract users and developers from different operating system communities and ecosystem, bringing different perspectives and experiences to the table. Conversations in those calls have led to the extension the OpenZFS Dev Summit to a four-day Users+Developers Summit and improvements to the #Sylve virtualization platform[2].

He would not take credit for these things, but I firmly believe that his effort to create space for the right people to get together every week is critical to keeping these relatively small projects thriving. He’s a hype man and force multiplier. Effective community-owned open source requires people like this.

But of course, time is money, and due to Ongoing Events life is about to get a lot more expensive for a lot of people in the USA, and that’s naturally going to mean less time available for community work.

I booted one of the original Slackware ARM development machines this week.

It’s a StrongARM RiscPC, running a Slackware ARM system that was last booted in April 2008. There was a kernel mismatch between the public builds and the original development kernel, so it took some careful archaeology to get it running; but it did boot, and I was able to log in and explore.

Friends,
Is there a good kind of course/ guide/ how to for learning how to use the terminal (I'm currently running Fedora Linux) for dummies. No crypic abbreviations, no "run this string of code" and then no further explanation, no assuming I know anything but how to open the terminal. Something that starts with telling me what everything means that I see even when I first open the terminal. How to do the most basic things, before going into the more interesting things. One stept after the other.

Please tell me there is such a thing? I really want to learn.

ein Microsoft Laptop wird mit der Zeit immer langsamer, der Leistungsverlust ist enorm mit neuen Updates. Auch eine Neuinstallation behebt das nicht.

Bei Apple passiert selbiges, der Zeitraum ist etwas länger und trotzdem merklich.

Mein #Linux Laptop ist so schnell wie beim Kauftag, durch Optimierungen ist der minimale Leistungsverlust, den jedes System hat, nicht existent. Trotz KDE.

Ich habe seit einiger Zeit neben Linux Mint auch Zorin 18 Pro im Einsatz und bin inzwischen ein bekennender Freund der kleinen Dubliner Entwicklerschmiede.

Da freut mich die Mail von eben: 10 Open-Source-Projekte erhalten von Zorin je 500 Euro. Auch die Linux Community in Dublin und der EDU-Bereich werden bedacht.

Linux-Dateimanager können ja direkt z. B. via SFTP auf Webspace zugreifen. Die Serververzeichnisse können wie lokale Ordner als Lesezeichen in die Sidebar des Dateimanagers abgelegt werden.
Auf diese Weise lassen sich sehr schnell Änderungen an einer Datei vornehmen.

Almost an hour spent trying to figure out why Flatpak-installed apps looked different on openSUSE Tumbleweed and Void Linux, configured the same way.
I just could not make sense of it.
Then I realized one was running Xorg and the other Wayland.

Needless to say, that was the problem…

I stick with Firefox not because it's always faster (it isn't), but because it's the only vote I have left against a monoculture.

If you would like to use network displays with #Gnome on #Debian, you need to open port 7236 on the device that will be broadcasting its screen. The updated "Gnome Network Displays" app now also adds an audio device that you can switch to. Pretty cool stuff; audio and video looked great on the destination screen.

Also kam fürs #Homeoffice ein #DECT-Headset von #Yealink dazu. Mit Basisstation, stabil, zuverlässig – eigentlich genau das, was ich gesucht habe. Blöd nur: Eine Basisstation heißt auch, dass man fürs #Büro ein zweites braucht. Also habe ich jetzt zwei davon. Die hat die Firma bezahlt. Zweimal das gleiche, jeweils mit ANC und Mikrophonen die Hintergrundgeräusche aktiv rausfiltern.

Und weil ich schon lange ein #OpenEar-Headset fürs Spazierengehen und #Fahrradfahren wollte, ist danach noch ein #Shokz dazugekommen.

Fazit: Jetzt bin ich zufrieden. Und ich habe gelernt, dass man am PC offenbar wirklich ein dediziertes #Headset nur dafür braucht – alles andere ist Kompromiss. 😉🎧

A friend of my sister's needed a new laptop, but she has no money. So I went diving at the municipal dump, found an i3-5005U based laptop. Threw in 8GB of RAM that I literally pulled out of the trash, and a 128GB SATA SSD.

Put #linux on it, ( #fedora if you must know) and the laptop is really surprisingly ... just fine for Youtube, Netflix, some letter writing.

Literally trash! And it's honestly, fine. Installing updates takes a little longer than you'd want. But it's really 100% usable.

Mein erster Reflex war Ubuntu. Lief gut, fühlte sich "frei" an. Doch die Ernüchterung folgte schnell: Hinter Canonical stecken zu starke US-Einflüsse. Ich wollte keine andere Abhängigkeit, sondern Unabhängigkeit. 🇺🇸❌

Nach tieferer Recherche fiel die Wahl auf openSUSE Tumbleweed. 🦎 Rolling Release, transparent, community-getrieben. Keine US-Cloud-Agenda im Nacken.

Es war ein steiniger Weg, aber ich sage euch: Ich gehe nicht zurück. Die frische Luft schmeckt zu gut.

I hate that updating #Linux will time out if sudo expires and I'm not hanging around for that big update so I can give it my password. Is there a way to disable this time out? I want it to just sit there, for all eternity, and wait for me to give it my password. (I definitely DON'T want sudo to just stay active forever though, just want the prompt to sit indefinitely.)

I'm on #Manjaro, and I update via terminal.
I hate updating via gui, and rarely do so.

Zu dieser ganzen #Wayland Geschichte: An sich denke ich, hat es Sinn gemacht, etwas neues zu entwerfen, was Schwächen von #Xorg behebt. Allerdings dauert die Entwicklung ja schon sehr lange und es ist doch immer noch nicht stabil und viele Software supportet es nicht. Generell wären viellelicht kleine Verbesserung von Xorg besser?

#Linux question from a noob using #Ubuntu as first ever attempt at quitting MS. I have downloaded Drivers for my drawing tablet and instructions on how to install them. But when I type the stuff (sudo sh install.sh) into the terminal it tells me "No such file". While I'm looking at the file on my desktop. What am I doing wrong 🥹

Edit: thanks for all the suggestions! Lots of helpfull advice and I've gotten further than before and will work my way through everything in the replies 🙏🏻

Gestern war ein altes verlassenes MacBook Pro dran, heute habe ich ein Microsoft Surface Pro von 2017 vom nicht mehr unterstützten Windows 10 befreit. Windows 11 lässt sich dort nicht mehr installieren. Das ist eine Microsoft-eigene Hardware mit 16 Gigabyte RAM und 1 Terabyte SSD. "Zu alt" für Windows 11, aber geradezu gelangweilt ...

Wondering when it is the best[1] time to test the #kernel to prevent #LinuxKernel regressions from hitting #Arch Linux, #Fedora Linux, or #openSUSE #Tumbleweed?

It's now, as the first pre-release of #Linux 6.19 is out – which leaves plenty of time to find, report, debug, and fix any problems that those distros otherwise will encounter when they switch to 6.19.y in about eight to ten weeks. And testing is not even hard, as easy-to-install packages with pre-built mainline kernels exist for all three distros[2].

In case you want to play it a bit safer, delay testing by one week till -rc2 is out – bugs that lead to data loss introduced before -rc1 are extremely rare but will almost certainly have been found and fixed by then.

Anything up to 6.19-rc6 (five weeks from now) is still okayish, but less ideal.

The sixth -rc is your last good chance to test. Linus by then wants all regressions that have become known since the beginning of the 6.19 cycle fixed – but in case some were missed or not reported yet, there is still enough time to report, debug, and fix them before they reach those distros.

Testing any later is often too late: most bugs then can't be fixed anymore before those distros will switch to the 6.19.y series, which will happen within one or two weeks (in the case of Arch and Tumbleweed) or three to four (Fedora) after 6.19 is released.

I'm looking at the architecture of things like Fedora Silverblue, NixOS, and the Steam Deck.

The concept of an immutable root filesystem with atomic updates seems like the technically correct way to do an OS. No more dependency hell, no more breaking the system with a bad sudo command. But the muscle memory of apt-get install / dnf install is hard to break. Containerizing everything (flatpak/distrobox) feels like a friction point for quick tasks.
For those who daily drive an immutable distro: Was the learning curve worth the stability? Or is it still too much friction for a machine? 🤔
