Guess who didn't change directories correctly and ran ~$ cd ./ && rm -rf ./*

$HOME went from 1.4TB to 815GB in the seconds before I could stop the process. I didn't lose anything critical. Just a bunch of convenience stuff, some non-critical notes, and everything in ~/Desktop$ which was mostly convenience links and stuff.

Probably more I can't think of, but nothing worth crying over. Rebuilding the critical stuff from two day old #backups now.

Er erhält Linux Mint LMDE 7 Cinnamon basierend auf #Debian "Gigi". LMDE 7 führt Mint als Alternative zur Ubuntuversion, die Mint normalerweise anbietet. Es ist die Rückfalloption, falls Ubuntu nicht mehr verfügbar ist.

Mir gefällt LMDE 7 besser.

In dieser Ausgabe erklärt Thomas Rudolph, warum #Google die Installation von #Android-Apps aus freien Quellen deutlich stärker reglementieren will.

Android war bisher flexibler als #iOS, weil #APK-Dateien und alternative Paketquellen wie F-Droid grundsätzlich nutzbar waren.

Zudem sollen Entwickler künftig ihre Identität nachweisen und Gebühren zahlen, bevor ihre Apps auf vielen Geräten installiert werden können.

Die Sendung zeigt außerdem, wie Google Play-Dienste diese Einschränkungen auch auf älteren Geräten ab Android 8 durchsetzen könnten.

Als Gegenentwurf werden entgoogelte Android-Varianten wie /e/OS, #LineageOS, #GrapheneOS und #iodéOS eingeordnet. #Linux-Systeme für #Mobiltelefone bleiben dagegen vorerst eher ein Experiment als eine alltagstaugliche Lösung.

I finally found the solution to weird problems accidentally.

The EURKey keyboard layout.

Had been using a weird us intl with dead letters or something, but was not really the best.

Just go to KDE keyboard settings and search for 'eu'. I had no idea it was there. And I search or tried multiple us weird variations.

Doesn't help that all these keyboards settings are really bad UX for users to explore and very dark magic.

@cstross @foone I do remember there was an additional wrinkle in that the (donated) box I was trying to install #Slackware onto was a PS/2 and the MCA architecture wasn't officially supported by the Slackware installation disks.

And astonishingly, I think I may have found a copy of the document I had to follow in order to hack the installation to work. https://www.linuxjournal.com/article/2037

Looking back and considering it was my first real experience with installing Linux, it's astonishing I got it to work. But it did, and that machine became my daily driver for the next few years.

After a one hour session on an exploratory test project I felt confident enough to edit my next video with KDEnlive instead of Cinelerra-GG. I tried some of the most common things I like to do in my edits, and figured out how to do them pretty quickly.

I'm in the process of editing that next video right now, and it's such a breeze. I do have to relearn things, and KDEnlive isn't without bugs either, but they're a lot less in your face than with Cinelerra-GG and the UI is 100000 times better. Seriously, I don't know what GUI library Cinelerra is using but it's so clunky.

All in all, I'm pretty satisfied. Things like speeding up parts of video are a lot less error prone, they keyframe handling took some getting used to, but now that I understand it feels much more intuitive than with Cinelerra. Keyframing the volume is a breeze. Just overall, I find KDEnline much more intuitive.

🐧 Als plötzlich Schluss war...

Vor wenigen Tagen besuchte ich wieder einmal OpenOS.at – eine Webseite, die ich seit vielen Jahren immer wieder gern genutzt habe. Statt der gewohnten Startseite erschien jedoch nur noch ein kurzer Hinweis:

„Diese Webpräsenz wurde am 26. Juni 2026 (nach 12 Jahren Betrieb) eingestellt.“

Damit endet nach zwölf Jahren ein Projekt, das für viele Linux- und BSD-Interessierte eine feste Anlaufstelle war.

Das erste Bild zeigt die frühere Startseite von OpenOS.at – mit aktuellen Distributionen, Nachrichten, Statistiken und Veranstaltungen aus der Welt freier Betriebssysteme. Das zweite Bild zeigt, was heute davon übrig geblieben ist.

Warum OpenOS eingestellt wurde, wissen wir bisher nicht. Vielleicht gibt es persönliche Gründe, vielleicht fehlte die Zeit oder Unterstützung. Vielleicht fand sich einfach niemand, der das Projekt weiterführen wollte. Solange es keine offizielle Erklärung gibt, sollten wir darüber nicht spekulieren.

Mich bringt das jedoch zum Nachdenken.

Viele von uns nutzen täglich freie Software, Webseiten, Foren oder Dienste. Wir freuen uns über aktuelle Informationen, hilfreiche Programme und funktionierende Server – oft ganz selbstverständlich und kostenlos.

Doch hinter all dem stehen Menschen.

Menschen, die ihre Freizeit investieren. Menschen, die Server betreiben, Inhalte pflegen, Fehler beheben, Updates einspielen und Fragen beantworten. Oft über viele Jahre hinweg und meist ehrenamtlich.

Gerade Projekte, die von einer einzelnen Person oder einem kleinen Team getragen werden, leisten Erstaunliches. Gleichzeitig sind sie aber auch besonders verletzlich. Wenn die Motivation nachlässt, das Privatleben mehr Zeit fordert oder gesundheitliche Gründe dazukommen, kann selbst ein langjähriges Projekt plötzlich enden.

Vielleicht erinnert uns das Ende von OpenOS daran, dass Open Source und freie Communities vom Mitmachen leben.

Nicht nur nutzen.

Nicht nur konsumieren.

Sondern auch einmal Danke sagen, Fehler melden, Dokumentationen schreiben, anderen helfen, einen kleinen Betrag spenden oder selbst mit anpacken.

Denn genau davon lebt unsere Gemeinschaft.

Ich möchte mich deshalb heute bei allen bedanken, die im Hintergrund dafür sorgen, dass freie Projekte überhaupt existieren – egal ob Entwickler, Administratoren, Übersetzer, Autoren oder Community-Mitglieder.

Ihr macht das Internet ein Stück besser. ❤️

Ich bekenne mich schuldig! Den ganzen Tag predige ich Wasser & schluerfe dann doch in einer Tour fermentierten Traubensaft!

So sehr ich #Linux auf meinem Gaming PC, meiner KI-Schleuder von ASUS & den Intel NUCs liebe, so wenig mag ich es auf dem Laptop.

Das liegt einfach daran, dass immer noch kein 100% lauffaehiges Linux fuer Thinkpads mit Qualcomm Elite SoC am Start ist & selbst die Hardware meines 4 Jahre alten MacBook Air M2 so gut ist, dass ich demnaechst nen neuen Akku einbauen werde 🤷‍♂️

Linux Frage: Nutze unter Debian quemu als hypervisor/Vitualisierungs-Enige. In einer virtuellen Maschine nutze ich omnissa horizon client (vmware). Bei suspend/resume am Gast-OS friert das Durchreichen von Tastatur-/Maus-Events an den horizon Client/die Remote-Sitzung ein. Das lässt sich z.B. reaktivieren, wenn ich in einem terminal unter dem Gast-OS eine Tastatureingabe tätige. Andere (Konfig-Lösungen) habe ich nicht gefunden. Ideen?

🎉 Massive thanks to the #wayland #redhat team and also a shout to @davidrevoy who recently dropped his Interim setup which first clued me in to "mouse mode" being on the horizon for stable 💘 (finally)

✅️ Sure enough, in Debian Testing w/ Wayland, the "Drawing Tablet" setting in KDE 6.6 automagically works with the following Gaomon tablets with no proprietary driver installed:

1️⃣ MK 2018
2️⃣ PD 1161

💡 The last two years were choppy and I even had to write a custom X config for the MK 2018 to teach an applied math course. Until recently, seeing no progress on the horizon for "out of the box" functionality, I had settled on @XLibreDev @sonicdesktop and was quite happy. In fact, very grateful to them for getting me by this last year - mucho thanks. #xlibre #sonicde #sonic

🏁 But, at the end of the day, I really need mainstream / stock Debian to just work with drawing products, not just for me ... but for my daughter's art projects - she just got her art accepted at @ffmpeg and I'm very proud of her. We rely on these products - there's no denying. At present:

Dascha uses:
1) X1 Carbon 4th Gen - using KDE neon stable (art attached that she did at 13 for ffmpeg)

2) HP All-In-One Touch i5 - using KDE neon stable

All working better natively in Wayland than under the prop driver. They work similarly well to how they work in X now.

Jonathan (me) uses:
1) 3x mini Ryzen PCs - KDE 6.6, Debian Testing, and Wayland - 1 w/ PD 1161 and 2 w/ MK 2018 - all working including "mouse mode" under wayland / stock Debia (art / teaching).

2) Dell 1950 laptop 2023 i7 w/ NVIDIA - had to manually build the nvidia driver under latest on their website, other than that no issues, running Debian Testing, Wayland, KDE 6.6 - MK 2018 works via USBC hub for teaching

3) X1 Carbon 4th gen i5 - Debian Testing, KDE 6.6, Wayland - works with Wacom stylus similar to Dascha's setup no issues

⁉️ How did this happen? I was fixing an old Precision 7920 and setting it up as a PeerTube runner on Lubuntu 26.04 (better with NVIDIA lol). I got bored and installed Kubuntu Desktop and then pluggeed in an MK 2018. It worked ... & so I started testing and researching KDE point releases & looking back at Mr. Revoy's post and switched all 7 machines over in < 48 hours.

Today, I was doing an upgrade of Percona MySQL server from 8.0 to 8.4.

It took 15-20 minutes to download a 118 MB .deb!

I forgot I had added Percona's repo to apt-mirror on an internal server of ours a few weeks back and forgot to update the web server to serve it so I fixed that.

Whipped up a new "deb822" percona.sources with their signing key but our URL. The result?

It took 1 second to download the percona server .deb.

Host your own .deb repos, folks! You can't count on the 3rd party hosted repo to always be there.

So I wanted to share with you this little project of mine. I delved into "retro-necromancy" and reanimated one very old UNIX utility called ile written by Robert Pendleton in 1988. I found it on one of the Walnut Creek source code CDs from 1994.
What it does is simply works like an input line editor (hence ile) for shells and programs that do not support interactive line editing. To put it simply, it adds Emacs-style keybindings like ^A, ^E, ^K, ^U and so on and command history that you can easily navigate.
Of course, these days it's hard to find a shell that doesn't support line editing.
But this little tool can still be usable, for example, with ed. It's nice to have Emacs-style editing in ed.
It can work like shell replacement or just run like a "middleman" between any given program. It respects terminal settings and doesn't get in a way. Keybindings are configurable.
Needless to say, the code from 1988 wouldn't run on any modern system. It was written in K&R style because there was no ANSI C standard yet! And #UNIX was quite a different beast back then.
So I ported it to modern systems, rewrote outdated bits (like sgttyb ioctls and brutal utmp handling).
Currently it builds and runs on #Linux, #OpenBSD, #FreeBSD and #NetBSD. Hopefully without too much bugs.

I'm submitting songs of mine for a sync agency, and they need instrumental versions. That would be easy enough, but the thing is, I record my vocals and acoustic guitar live in most cases, so any instrumental would have some vocal bleed. Stem-splitters are useful for reducing bleed.

No mysterious background process eating half your #RAM like Pac-Man after three energy drinks.

You choose what gets installed. You choose when #updates happen. You choose what your #desktop looks like.

You are Neo.

Windows #users are still sitting in their pods, downloading the latest mandatory #update called KB-Whatever-Again, wondering why their printer suddenly speaks ancient Sumerian.

Linux is not perfect. Sometimes Wi-Fi drivers behave like a side quest in Dark Souls.

Sometimes you spend two hours fixing a problem just to feel smarter than everyone else.

But that is the point. The red pill was never about comfort. It was about #freedom.

And freedom means occasionally reading a forum post written by a Finnish guy in 2007 who solved your #problem and vanished forever like a #Jedi master.

Après plus de 15 ans sur #Ubuntu, j'ai finalement switché pour #Debian #Trixie il y a quelques mois. Je ne regrette absolument pas! Je ne suis pas dépaysé et j'ai une expérience plus épurée de l'OS. Ça me rappelle quand je suis passé sur Android sans surcouche. Je le recommande à tout utilisateur.ice d'Ubuntu qui est a l'aise avec l'OS. Il y a assez peu de choses a faire via le terminal.

💻 PC-Sicherheit für Linux: firejail 🔐

Freund*innen technischer Sicherheit: nutzt Ihr für Eure Linux Rechner auch firejail (oder ähnliches)?

Das Programm entdeckte ich zufällig vor ein paar Tagen, habe ein bisschen dazu recherchiert und es dann installiert.

Firejail baut um jedes Programm einen Schutzkäfig (sogenanntes Sandbox-Prinzip).

Das verringert, wenn doch mal Schadsoftware a.d. Rechner gelangt, die Angriffsfläche massiv.

Es gibt im Alltag ein paar kleine Änderungen, so kann ich zB aktuell keine Dateien aus dem Browser direkt in einen Unterordner speichern, sondern nur in den allgemeinen Download-Ordner und muss anschließend die Datei von dort manuell in den gewünschten Ordner ziehen, aber das ist mir der Sicherheitszugewinn wert.

Allo les copains copines #linux ? Ma mère, 78 ans, tourne sur #Mint depuis qqs années. Son portable rend l'âme depuis qqs semaines (ca freeze ... j'aime écrire ce mot en période de canicule).
Je voudrais lui recommander un ordinateur durable, sans prise de tête, sous mint. Il faut du 16 pouces pour la vue qui baisse. Inutile de préciser que la puissance n'est pas la clef : ce n'est pas une joueuse en dehors de petits jeux Web. J'aime l'idée de #Framework. Mais le prix pique en 16 pouces. J'ai vu #Slimbook et #Tuxedo. L'idée : un dernier pc quali qui va durer pour ne pas déstabiliser l'utilisatrice sur le hard et le soft. Des idées / recos ? Merci !
