My WinBoat setup broke after some housekeeping. The Windows 11 VM didn't.

WinBoat is a frontend for dockurr/windows: QEMU+KVM in a container, with the whole VM in one directory. One rootless podman run against that directory, and it booted straight to the lock screen.

Bonus finding: in rootless Podman, NETWORK=nat silently falls back to passt. My "NAT" change weeks ago never did anything.

Despite being called a KVM escape, the actual bug lives in the host IPv4 networking stack. Untrusted CHECKSUM_PARTIAL offload metadata from a guest can overwrite already-validated packet headers during ip_do_fragment(), leaking host memory or allowing a guest-to-host escape.

Mainline patches landed Oct 14, and stable backports are out. Check your hypervisors and reboot!

On a récupéré un ordinateur portable pour Julie, en tant que matériel d'aide pour l'école.

Elle a 8 ans, un #tdah très fort, qui entraîne une dyslexie, et elle est certainement dyspraxique. Depuis début septembre, elle a enfin une écriture lisible, mais le geste lui coûte énormément et elle a des difficultés à écrire dans l'après-midi, à cause de la fatigue liée à la concentration (malgré la Ritaline qui l'aide beaucoup).
Elle est suivie par une ergothérapeute et une orthopédagogue.

Ceci posé, j'aimerais mettre #Linux sur son ordinateur mais je ne sais pas quelle distribution prendre, qui soit facile pour une enfant.

Cyclic (graph) history: I used to tinker and enjoying #Linux whilst having Windows 98 and then 2000 as my "last resort" system for gaming and tasks that weren't easy to do on Slackware. Proprietary software just felt weird to use, honestly, on a personal level.

25 years later I have a #NetBSD box that I'm getting used to while having Linux as a reserve/occasional gaming OS. Slopware just feels weird to use, honestly, on a personal level :)

Okay, so I have a #ShellScript with a basic read statement:

I have for years just dealt with not being able to move the cursor back and forth if I make a typo in the input because doing so generates the strings ^[[C
and ^[[D.

Is there any way to allow moving the cursor normally as with a standard command line? I would suspect that it's something that needs to be set in .bashrc, because I can't seem to find it.

Nach rund drei Jahrzehnten ist die X11-Sitzung Geschichte, alte X11-Programme laufen über XWayland weiter. Wer X11 noch braucht, bleibt bei Plasma 6.7 – dessen X11-Sitzung wird bis Anfang 2027 gepflegt.

For a long time we have made our selves gradually more and more dependent on Big Tech. This applies when it comes to operating system, to browsers, to various services, to storage and now when it comes to AI.

More and more are realizing this was and is wrong.

You can take the first steps to be independent as a person or company. Obviously, given that you are here, you have already taken some steps. Here are some suggestions:

1. Switch browser... to Vivaldi. :)
2. Switch desktop OS. Personally I have switched to Linux. Currently running Kubuntu, Ubuntu and Zorin on different computers.
3. Switch mail service. Proton and Fastmail are good services, but there are others. Choose one that allows use of a mail client.
4. Switch calendar service. Most mail services also offer a calendar service.
5. Switch office package. Personally I use LibreOffice.
6. Switch Web conferencing software. Personally I use Whereby.
7. Switch search. Startpage, Ecosia, Qwant and DDG are great alternatives.

There are a lot of other great choices. The point is to start taking those steps away from Big Tech and Silicon Valley.

this is the one and only reason that the Linux kernel is going out of its way to hide which commits are LLM generated by abolishing the Assisted-By tag, simultaneously with torvalds fully slopcoding a core “improvement” to the kernel’s memory management

Yesterday I decided to upgrade my current graphics card from a Radeon 6800 XT to a more recent 9070 XT. The old workhorse has kept me going for about 6 years now. It was about time. Frame rate in ARC Raiders dropped below 70 sometimes... and as you know, FPS is everything. And I refuse to lower settings to maintain stable FPS ;-)

After a few weeks with Debian Stable, I decided yesterday to switch to Debian Testing after all. On more modern computers, it really does make a difference whether I have kernel 6.3 or 7.2 available or can use significantly more up-to-date packages.

Last month I also played around with Debian Sid, and it was absolutely stable for me, though the constant updates—often several times a day—were annoying. So Testing is the perfect compromise for me.

Let me just say this: I still consider Fedora to be the best Linux distribution from a technical standpoint—the absolute gold standard. But unfortunately, in 2026, the world looks like this: Fedora = Red Hat = IBM = Big Tech = USA = Trump. And I absolutely don’t want to use anything from Trump’s shithole country anymore.

We built a hardware tool we call the PWNie which got us a foothold running code on the A13. After a months of grinding we've VERY close to a Linux patch to bring A13 support to mainline Linux!
