Here's a #ShellScripting puzzle. Suppose you have a shell script run with the "-e" flag, i.e., it's supposed to exit immediately if a command exits with a non-zero exit status. But there's one particular command you want to capture the exit status of so you can check if it's a particular failure code and ignore it if so. What's the cleanest way to do that?

My HDTV connected as a monitor to my desktop PC. On the screen is Slackware Linux in console mode with Tmux running a two panes, side by side. Left pane is running slackpkg+ updates and upgrades. Right pane is SSH'd to tilde.institute and running a Tmux session there, split into two panes, top and bottom. Bottom pane is showing Irssi in an IRC channel. Top pane is SSH'd to SDF and running another Tmux session there, and focused on the Tmux window where the list of BBOARD boards is shown.

My use case is this: I'm calling an external command from #NeoMutt, and NeoMutt sets $COLUMNS to the width of the terminal. However, I want to limit it to 80 or lower.

Linux Mint boot forces a fsckd check of my Root (/dev/sda2) partition every boot.

Thanks to some lovely folk I stopped the other message and subsequent check.

What is fsckd in comparison to fsck? How do I stop it running at every boot? Could it be forced by an error on my /Home partition (/dev/sda3)?

Any idea why this is suddenly happening and how to stop it would be ever so gratefully received.

J'avais essayé #Ubuntu ya plusieurs années mais ça ramait trop sur ma machine. C'était LE char (oups!). Alors je repassais sur W10 avec réticence (Wdws ne correspondait en rien à mon éthique) et j'essayais de colmater tant bien que mal le flicage de cet OS.

Puis en Juillet (celui d'il y a quelques semaines), j'ai réinstallé Ubuntu mais c'était pareil : trop lent

I am #teetotal (and have been all my life) but love making mixed drinks, and have an extensive #zeroproof bar.

I am an amateur #photographer without any particular speciality, but I do particularly like taking shots of #birds (especially #raptors ), and other mer-folk. However, I really want to be able to unlock my #KeePass database on both #Linux and #Android with it.
The NitroKey 3 supports the proprietary YubiKey challenge-response protocol, but neither #KeePassDX + #ykDroid nor #KeePass2Android work with NitroKeys. (#KeePassXC on desktop does, though!)

A newly upgraded Debian Linux system running the hyfetch command line program. Hyfetch, a neofetch fork, prints the system's specs along with a Pride-colored Debian logo in a terminal.

A note that if you want to help people move to using Linux, one *option* is to build them an independently running USB SSD.

I've documented a good method for doing this, which has two distinctions:
- it allows them to not modify their existing computer at all;
- it will be their *long term* portable Linux, that can be used with (most) other computers.

The one big caveat:
- for each run-time host computer, they will need to find out how to have it boot from USB.

- One Jail running Netbird Wireguard to connect my infra securely

All ZFS based for backup / snapshots and rollback options.

Routed and NAT'ed via a seperate deficated pf jail.

All working fine, I get first metrics and can start slowly improve from here.

Ok real talk for a second. I like #fedi, I do. But a subset of people on here have a serious case of the smug going on and it's frankly vile as fuck. I'm referring to people who go "This wouldn't have happened if you'd just switched to #linux" when someone has a computer issue. Or people deriding others for being on #blueSky which isn't properly proper centralized(tm) and har har dee har when that social network does something that allows folks on here to feel superior.
Gonna give it straight here: it's people like this that essentially make #fedi, as a whole, come across as a bunch of judgy, spiteful, angry nerds that want to be off in their own little corner hiding from the world and judging everyone who doesn't feel the same way. It's akin to that guy at parties who's seen the light and spends the entire time convincing others to buy a hybrid, or go on a keto diet, or try essential oils and yeerety sneer if you don't intend to smoke whatever they're smoking.

Bon bah merci a la personne de mon boulot qui m'a fait découvrir robocopy sur #windows puis expliqué rsync sur #linux pour pouvoir synchroniser mes données entre mon disque dur de mon PC fixe vers mes disques externes pour les copies "au cas où "
Pour rsync, il faut encore que je trouve l'option pour, a la fois afficher la trace dans le terminal et remplir le fichier de logs + lui dire de synchroniser les dossiers sur lesquels j'ai mis des liens symboliques
(Oui avant je formattais les disques externes avant de les reremplir, ce qui prenait un temps fou, quand on commence a en avoir beaucoup)

When Windows breaks, and you fix it, your resent it bc the problem was put there on purpose so that you *can't* fix your own computer.

When #Linux breaks, and you fix it, you feel happy bc you learned something about how Linux works, and it turns out it made perfect sense the whole time. :)

(Mac is just as bad as Windows in terms of keeping you from fixing your own computer, but they break down far less often. Don't @ me. It's true.)

Ok, any #video folks out there who know how to do what I want to do? I don't know what words to search for because I don't know what this technique is called. Boosts welcome, suggestions welcome.

I have a pool cleaning robot. Like a roomba, but for the bottom of the pool. We call it poomba. Anyways, I want to shoot an MP4 video with a stationary camera (a GoPro) looking down on the pool while the robot does its work. So I will have this overhead video of like 3-4 hours.

I want to kinda overlay all the frames of the video into a single picture. So the areas where the robot drove will be dark streaks (the robot is black and purple). And any area the robot didn't cover would show the white pool bottom. Areas the robot went over a lot would be darker. Areas it went rarely would be lighter.

I'm just super curious how much coverage I actually get. This thing isn't a roomba. It has no map and it definitely doesn't have an internet connection at the bottom of the pool. (Finally! A place they can't get AI, yet!) It's just using lidar, motion sensors, attitude sensors and some kind of randomizing algorithm.

I think of it like taking every frame of the video and compositing it down with like 0.001 transparency. By the end of the video the things that never changed (the pool itself) would be full brightness and clear. While the robot's paths would be faint, except where it repeated a lot, which would be darker.

I could probably rip it into individual frames using #ffmpeg and then do this compositing with #ImageMagick or something (I'm doing this on #Linux). But 24fps x 3600 seconds/hour x 3 hours == about 260K frames. My laptop will take ages to brute force this. Any more clever ways to do it?

If I knew what this technique/process was called, I'd search for it.

One thing I appreciate about the upcoming #SUSE 16 is they're doing away with the SP vs minor versions thing between SLES and Leap.

I'm surprised there's no mention of "ALP" at all in this announcement.

Full SELinux support out of box (and I assume NetworkManager will be default) makes this a very welcome upgrade, IMO.

I cleaned up the initial mess in June, second iteration this past week/ish. Generally, most of this hardware should be in one of the office racks (1U switch + 2x 0.5U patches + 1U UPS), specifically NOT in my walk-in closet. It's a work in progress.

But after each step I must stop & search the web for how to take the next step. I read 10 different opinions on how to do it, b/c the first 9 are unintelligible, sound too risky, or just don't work.

Eventually, a "solution" makes everything unstable. I have to stop and research to figure out if/how I can go back to zero.

Start over.

The state of #Linux packaging seems to be a perpetual mess. There is no standard packaging format among distros (something that I don't think will be resolved any time soon) and I've always viewed third party packaging tools like #snap and #flatpak with skepticism, mainly from a #security perspective.

After reading this, I'd rather deal with the perpetual mess of different package managers than the unraveling security headache that is Flatpak.
