Firefox on Kubuntu recently lost sound (audio output – input is OK, at a glance).

Anyone else? A regression with an update to 154.0 (64-bit) Snap for Ubuntu, maybe?

Pages that are silent in Firefox are audible in Microsoft Edge.

I have sought a bug in a few places, but not yet in Reddit. I'm unashamedly lazy at the moment (trying to prioritise other things). TIA for any help.

This is the benefit of keeping the mail server and the mail client separate.

The feed reader is another great feature which allows you to subscribe to your favorite new sources and have them displayed in chronological order.

Something as simple as echo is not even correctly standardized.

How echo is defined in the spec:
OPTIONS: Implementations shall not support any options. Character sequences shall be recognized.

dash's echo: Always interprets escapes, has no flags, 'echo -e' prints '-e'. Everything correct so far.
bash's echo: Doesn't interpret escapes by default (has -E by default), can escape with -e.
zsh's echo: Always interprets escapes, (has -e by default), can avoid escape with -E. However 'command echo' behaves like bash's echo.
ksh93's echo: Doesn't interpret escapes by default, can do with -e, but 'echo -E' just prints '-E'.

I've had the beta for Tuxedo OS "Debian edition" for a week and a half now, and I've been using it as my main production system (yes I know, beta and prod shouldn't go together. Call me adventurous!).

So here's a deep dive into what it does, how it works, and why that's probably my new favorite #Linux distro, now that it's based on Debian testing and not Ubuntu LTS:

Okay this might be a really weird question but I have one question regarding command-line-only workflows.

I am already used to and very comfortable working in the command line as is.

And as any heavy user of the terminal will know, at some point you'll probably start writing scripts and functions and aliases to create your own little shortcuts for common tasks or preferred program call-up options and such. So do I.

Now my weird little 'problem' is that I don't always remember all of the scripts,  aliases, functions and even programs I built for my workflow over the years off the top of my head.

For example, I might have an "update" alias set up, but nine out of ten times will still enter the command manually out of sheer habit.

Or I will have a calendar or to-do application for the CLI/TUI, but sometimes forget that I have it installed when I need it. Or I'll forget where the files are I set up to organise my journal or my time tracking.

Or going even further, I don't always remember all the neat features of my shell I could use, or the computing/typing habits I wanted to build, or the projects I have going on, and so on!

In a graphical desktop environment or on a mobile UI, you have tools like desktop shortcuts, quickstart icons or application launcher menus for an overview of all of your environment's user-facing programs. Seeing an icon out of the corner of my eye sometimes reminds me of things that a purely reactive user interface like a shell doesn't.

Now there's obviously ways to solve this that come to mind:

• writing a script that prints comprehensive documentation on everything, so I only need to remember that one script name.
• keeping a physical cheat sheet next to my computer.
• using a terminal multiplexer to have a permanent digital 'cheat sheet' or 'launcher' open at the side of the screen.
• trying to just automate these things by using cronjobs/services and shell init scripts to, for example, show me the weather and my to-do list automatically on boot so i don't have to remember these commands at all
• trying to keep a super organised self-documenting file system and harmonious custom dotfile configs so every config is in the same place, every program uses the same keybinds, all scripts are in ~/.bin/ or something etc.
• writing my own "home page" type greeter.

… but with all of these solutions, while they may work perfectly fine, something doesn't feel "right"!

I mean it's nice and good to print these things upon shell start, but later on in the day that won't be there to look at anymore. The multiplexer one is cumbersome. The self documenting file system organisation sounds like a pain to maintain.

I feel like this is an issue that corporate folks probably should have solved by now, as documenting workflows for employee handovers and stuff is critical there too. Do they use wikis for that? What about all those newfangled workflows like #scrum and #agile and all, do they have anything to say about documentation?

Can anyone relate? How do you handle this?

🪄 A shell like bash can expand what is within the curly braces. You can even use steps en prefix with zeroes, so all names are equally long and easy to sort.

Ich habe mir letzte Woche von einem LLM ein kleines Pythonscript erstellen lassen. Es sollte meine .ssh/config auslesen, dort jeden eingetragenen Host finden, und dann für jeden Host einen übergebenen Befehl ausführen. Also ich rufe "./remote.py apt update" auf, und dadurch soll für jeden Host "ssh hostname apt update" aufgerufen werden. Bis alles funktioniert hat, dauerte es ca. 20min. Leider waren da recht komplexe Regular Expressions drinnen (ein Kenntnis die ich immer noch nicht erlangt habe) und ich habe nicht wirklich jede Zeile verstanden was dort vor sich ging. Wenn ich mich selbst hinsetze und das schreibe, was ich gerade versucht habe, brauche ich auch 20min. Habe dabei aber wieder etwas mehr Python gelernt anstatt prompts so zu formulieren, dass auch das dabei herauskommt was ich möchte. Ein weiterer Vorteil: ich verstehe jede Zeile meines Scripts.
Mein Script ist übrigens eine Zeile kürzer wie das generierte, auch wenn das nur das "import re" ist, welches wegfällt. Ich programmiere ja viel Automatisierungen in der Industrie. Da sind wir es gewohnt lieber eine Zeile mehr zu programmieren, dafür ist es lesbarer für die Person, die das nach uns maintainen muss.
Um fair zu sein sollte ich sagen, dass ich einige Fehler schon umgehen konnte, weil das LLM die schong emacht hatte, ich also eventuell selbst 5 - 10min länger gebraucht hätte.

Im Januar, so verdichten sich die Hinweise (die Frontseite von Holarse zeigte vor dem F5 den Wochenendrückblick-2026-5 ganz oben), habe ich mein gutes betagtes Notebook von #Tuxedo mit #TuxedoOS das letzte mal eingeschaltet. Also damals und dann eben jetzt, heute.
Was soll ich sagen, eingeschaltet, ein kleiner Moment der Besinnung, "Discover" sagt da sind Updates, ich sage "mach mal", bisschen sudo-Kennwort ... und das wars.
Drei Monate Updates, +800 Pakete hat er mir angezeigt, einfach mal so, schnubeldidupp, drauf geschoben. Zeitaufwand: 10 Minuten, davon war ich beeinträchtigt: Null.

So there seems to be a null pointer dereference bug in certain #Linux kernels, like 7.1.x, that has been causing issues with my #Jellyfin server on #Debian. I'm not enough of an expert to fully understand it, but one indication was that htop would also have issues when the issue began, and it has something to do with the movement, translation or compaction of memory during GPU workloads, like transcoding. The solution, for now, besides downgrading the kernel, seems to be to disable HMM or IOMMU.

Not #NixOS itself mind you; Nix and I don't get along very well, but that'd be an Owlbear issue. But Nix based OSes all seem to have super weird configuration setups, nonfunctional built in tools, or both.

At least for me.

It's almost like maybe variations of a system that can be completely configured with one file should maybe be distributed as a configuration file, instead of a buncha unsupported, undocumented system alterations.

Obviously there's more at stake than distro hopping here, given the #Linux kernel itself is now pro-LLM, and also considering there's a wide gulf between "won't accept direct LLM contributions to distro-specific docs/tooling" and "won't package upstream software using LLMs".

Not that the latter sounds in any way feasible, even as it sounds vaguely pleasing to consider, and would doubtless garner instant word of mouth.

But personally, I'd take "the distro's own docs and packaging toolchain will stay slop-free" + assume my own burden for deciding which upstreams to use, pin, boycott, whatever.

Installing #FreeBSD on my new laptop to escape the massive #AI and bloat madness of #Linux. Opened the terminal and it is a real Unix, all my favorite tools and utilities are there from decades ago. Nothing has been "depreciated" or "Unix is dead" that #Redhat and their #systemD were constantly gaslighting about.

It's all there, even CDE/Motif, xv, oclock, xeyes, finger, ...

Since this is a new laptop with new GPU and all that, I am having to do some scraping from a Linux distribution to get Xorg working. Even GhostBSD didn't have all the new drivers yet. But this is Unix and the included documentation and build tools are amazing. Shame that the Linux Foundation is heavily invested by the AI goons. But this is a win for me😸

This sudden change was due to Dynadot changing their subdomain record policy from 250 to 50 without notice. This caused a week-long disruption in building out new services due to any record over the cap being irrecoverable once deleted and new ones being impossible to create. Despite having 150+ records in the past, Dynadot responded that they've never supported more than 150 and would only restore that.

Both the change in terms and contract without notice and the dishonesty once a ticket was filed serve as sufficient reasons to ditch Dynadot. This was surprising to say the least. They've been a solid Registrar. As for DNS, we only used it the last three years having originally used afraid.org for over a decade. Ultimately, this is for the best however, because it is always unwise to keep one's DNS and Registrar at the same host. Hurricane Electric's DNS is additionally a breath of fresh air from 1998-2002 era and so easy to use - the alphabetical rendering of records amazing 🤩

People only now discovering that the whole point of the #LinuxFoundation was nothing other than #corporateControl of the #Linux ecosystem.

With the help of the lsusb command you can see which USB devices are connected to your system. Very useful to confirm that a device is plugged in and recognized, but also to block devices using udev.

Example: I wanted to block the microphone of my webcam, so it only is used for the video.

Steps:
- Find USB device identifier
- Create udev rule
- Reload udev daemon

La première tâche s'est lancée à 10h pile et s'est terminée 11 minutes plus tard : 3 VM mises à jour en douceur (PBS, Elasticsearch et Jitsi Meet, bien identifiables en bleu sur la capture) et aucun redémarrage nécessaire. Tout roule tout seul pendant que je peux profiter de mon café ! ☕️

I have Debian with ZFS native encrypted rootfs booting on a Radxa ROCK 5 ITX. The only remaining issue is that the passphrase isn't passed from ZFSBootMenu to Debian's initramfs, so it has to be entered twice. Should be fixable.

I switched to #Linux distros and stumbled onto something curious, the powerful features I'd completely overlooked for years were already in the Windows software I used on daily basis.

Text editor commands, graphics shortcuts, productivity workflows—all there, buried or unfamiliar. But on Windows, I never had to learn them. The OS was designed to work without that knowledge.

Linux, though, demanded engagement. No coasting. That friction forced me to explore, experiment, and actually use these capabilities. Now my workflow is transformed, and I can't imagine working without them. The real irony, switching to open-source software made me a fundamentally better user of proprietary tools.
