I'm taking all of my old thumb drives that I have laying in different drawers around the house, and turning them into bootable Linux Mint drives so friends can try it out for themselves and install it if they like it.

When they’re done with it, I’ll ask them too give it to someone that they think might like it.

I mean, why not? Those thumb drives aren’t going to be used anytime soon. May as well put them to good use.

Pas besoin de savoir comment on crée un utilisateur ou on lance un service, ca s'adresse en fait uniquement à des utilisateurs en peine par rapport à windows pour les rassurer.

Dear Teamviewer user on Linux (with KDE Plasma and Wayland),

I noticed that I can connect to a Linux machine running KDE Plasma and Wayland using Teamviewer, but only after the user at the remote machine accepts a pop-up requesting permissions for devices and screen (or similar).

I found an older thread that mentions a checkbox in the KDE system settings (in the "Legacy X11 whatever" section). But checking that checkbox does not improve the situation.

Does anyone have a solution for this? Any ideas?

De retour de mon week-end pour aller installer llinux mint chez ma sœur. J'ai un peu galéré (disque dur avec secteurs défectueux), mais je m'en suis sorti !
Dernière étape : installer une solution de prise en main à distance. Je suis tombé sur Remmina qui fonctionne bien, mais pas possible de s'en servir en gardant la session de ma sœur ouverte. Du coup, pas moyen de lui montrer ce que je fais ou elle ce qu'elle fait.

My first degree was in computers. I was a Windows admin until moonlighting at a music studio turned me on to Apple. I briefly used Linux for an experimental box and enjoyed it. That said, I left the IT world long ago, very little of what I use now runs on Linux - at least not without headache - and I don't have the time or resources to try to switch everything over. If all of my core music software and hardware becomes reliably Linux compatible, I will reconsider.

Pretty chuffed that I got this old (2016) #ChromeBook a second lease on life thanks to the instructions by @vkc and the #chultrabook project!

I did have a go early this year but I was only allowed to install #linux next to #ChromeOS and that was rather unsatisfying. It turns out it's possible to replace the firmware altogether and get a proper machine out of it!

I recently learned that there's a mount option on #Linux called "private". This is useful for bind mounts, such as when creating a chroot, because private stops all sub-mounts within a mounted directory from being visible in the other mount location.

For example, in my case my storage array is mounted at /mnt/storage. I created a chroot in /mnt/chroot and just remount my whole root directory there. Without "private", my storage then also becomes visible at /mnt/chroot/mnt/storage.

Je cherche des conseils matériels pour monter une tour (ou éventuellement la choper telle quelle) dont la finalité serait un média center qui tourne sous Linux.

L’usage serait essentiellement un genre de média center pour la maison :

• visionnage médias vidéos / écoute audio (via lecteur et fichiers)
• lecture de documents
• utilisation basique (bureautique, consultation internet)
• penser l’usage matériel un minimum évolutif dans le temps

Les questions que je me pose aussi sont :

• Est-ce que c’est intéressant encore en 2025 de tout monter from scratch ou est-ce qu’il y a des alternatives petit budget et/ou récup intéressantes à connaître ?
• Est-ce qu’il est possible de faire une petite tour (en terme de taille) ?
• Vers quels sites marchands se tourner ? Des ressourceries ?

N’ayant pas utilisé Linux depuis des années, je suis aussi fort preneuxse de conseils sur les distros stables du moment

I'm using #tesseract 5 to do the #OCR locally.

It is *mostly* pretty good - because the default font is nice and clear.

Imaginez... On fait un gros truc de financement pour vanter l'utilisation de #GNU #Linux. Genre, on tente de cumuler 100k, on fait une pub de 30s, on arrive à la placer sur deux ou trois chaines TV. Les gens "non informés" voient la gueule de Gnome, de KDE, on explique que c'est gratos. Imaginez que ça marche, juste que ça ouvre les esprits. Parfois j'ai envie de lancer cette idée.

Heads up if you're running #Debian #Forky (a.k.a. Debian Testing) and you have a lot of RAM. The new user-space OOM manager systemd-oomd doesn't treat kernel cache memory as available when calculating memory usage. That means it decides you're running out of RAM when you actually aren't and kills processes when it shouldn't.

But the logic doesn't add up.

They correctly identify "Android" as a restrictive system and seek freedom elsewhere. They understand that "Android" and "Linux" are not the same thing, because they are not, in this case, asking for "Android phones with more freedom," but specifically for "Linux phones".

Yet, when it comes to the desktop, this same clarity vanishes. If a "Linux phone" is different from an "Android phone," even though both use Linux, the kernel, then why is a "Linux desktop" not recognized as being, in its most common form, actually a GNU desktop?

The very inconsistency in their naming proves the point: the system is more than its kernel. When they want freedom, they look for a different system, whatever the kernel is, even when they don't know what a kernel is—and that's perfectly fine. They want something with freedom more like they already have on the desktop, which, in its classic free form, is GNU. This is how we can easily distinguish them with less confusing terms.

I'm not sure if even the @fsf@hostux.social would fully endorse my view, but I find their logic compelling. Here is the central question: unless you are running a pure kernel like #Linux by itself (a project focused on a #kernel, hosted at kernel.org), then calling the entire system "Linux" isn't a meaningful name for a complete, usable #OS. I recognize what people usually refer to as "Linux" is, in fact, a system designed to be #GNU.

To illustrate: if we apply the logic of naming the whole system after its kernel, then why do we call it "Android" and not just "Linux"? After all, #Android uses Linux too, yet we correctly recognize it as a distinct system.

So why is GNU so often forgotten and replaced by "Linux" when talking about personal or server computers? (Only in this context?) I believe this isn't accidental—it often overlooks the deeper vision of a project designed from the start to ensure software freedom for its users.

When we are running only the kernel (whatever the purpose may be), then by all means, let's call the OS "Linux." But when it's part of a larger, distinct system—like the GNU OS—then it should be recognized as such.

I'd like to add a final thought: I know it can sometimes be annoying to insist on this when it seems that everyone understands what "Linux" means, even if we disagree with the term. But this is part of the advocacy—sometimes it involves emphasizing a technicality that may even be controversial, in order to reinforce public awareness of GNU and the philosophy of free software.

A brief debate like this one, right here, may be enough for someone to realize what GNU is, which is already a desired outcome. Who knows, it might even spark a flame of curiosity, leading them to research this fascinating topic further.

Just over 4 years ago one of my granddaughters gave me her old HP Windows 10 laptop that wouldn't hold a charge - partly because she'd bent the power cable which I much later discovered had damaged the power jack.

Three years ago I replaced the battery, and just got on with the power lead only working at certain angles.

A few months ago I got it to triple boot with #Linux Mint and Bohdi.

This morning I've replaced the power jack.

It's now a perfectly good Linux machine.

So - don't throw that old laptop away there's always someone who can fettle it into a 'like new' laptop for not too much £££.
If I can do it then I'm pretty sure most of you can - or you'll know someone who can!

Okay. So. I guarantee you that most Windows users—especially ones on Fedi—know how fucked up Windows has become. Bombarding them with "Install #Linux, we have cookies!" propaganda isn't going to send them rushing to download an image and flash it to a usb drive to install.

They know Windows is a nightmare, they want the nightmare to stop. But there are a lot of reasons stopping them from installing Linux.

One of the biggest ones is that even as Linux has gotten easier and easier to install, it's still a really big step for a lot of people. Maybe they only have one computer, and can't risk slagging it if they mess up. Maybe they don't even know where to start backing up their data. Google and the other search engines are returning AI slop, so they can't trust those to give them accurate and useful answers.

So instead of trying to convince them they want to switch, we need to help them find the resources necessary to do so if they decide they're ready. We need to be the opposite of all those fucking RTFM bros that made it hard when we first switched. We need to make sure they can find a helpful community to give them the support to feel safe in switching.

Because yeah, Windows fucking sucks. They know that, we know that. But breaking their computer so it works even less is fucking terrifying, and Linux has a fucking PR problem because the RTFM bros are the loudest members of our community.

Edit: this really resonated while I was asleep, and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one frustrated here. A few people have replied asking for help, and I'll try to boost them later when I get back to the computer, but if you can, please help them out. Not everyone is gonna switch, but let's make it better for those who are ready and willing to make the jump. ​​

Do we have easy open-source solutions for multi-room audio these days? _And_ hardware for that use case?

What I'm looking for is basically a way to mirror the audio output of the computer at my desk over the network to other computers in my apartment. They should play whatever _it_ plays, regardless of whether it's web radio, Netflix, or game audio.

And the secondary players should be decent speakers with integrated computers and Wi-Fi, akin to a Sonos speaker.

I find it quite enjoyable to read man-files. Today I learned of ProtectSystem= for systemd unit files where 'strict' will mount the entire filesystem in read-only and then necessitate explicitly providing writable folders.

I didn't know about this before. I didn't know much about systemd at all to be honest.

And I learned about using timers instead of cronjobs.

#Windows 10 stirbt. Windows 11 verärgert viele Nutzer mit Gängelungen - Sind #Macs eine bessere Alternative?

Während manche #Apple-Nutzer darauf schwören, sieht die Wahrheit düster aus - viel düsterer.

Mit den stark kritisierten künstlichen #Systemanforderungen hat sich #Microsoft nämlich an #Apple orientiert.

Die gängeln ihre Kunden damit schon seit Jahren. Als Folge diktiert Apple, wie lange sich ein #Mac oder #MacBook nutzen lässt.

Das sind nur wenige Jahre, obwohl die Geräte sehr teuer sind. Insbesondere beim Speicher verlangt der Konzern absurd hohe Preise.

Und sorgt mit verlöteten statt gesteckten Bauteilen dafür, dass Kunden diese #Mondpreise bezahlen müssen, wenn sie einen Mac wollen.

Ein selbst geschaffenes #Monopol, welches fragwürdig zum Nachteil der Kunden missbraucht wird.

Doch selbst das ist nicht alles. Im Vergleich mit Windows schneidet Apple erstaunlich schlecht ab ....

au lycée, pour le projet #NIRD nous avons repoussé la migration vers le nouveau serveur Windows.
Et conservé à ce jour le serveur Kwartz, pour le réseau pédagogique (basé sur ubuntu et open LDAP).

Le réseau admin est lui bloqué comme 80 % des lycées de la région : plus d'internet, plus d'accès aux machines. Notre intendance utilise d'ailleurs les Pcs #Linux, 100% logiciels libres de la classe #NIRD, sans aucun souci d'ailleurs.
nous ne sommes donc pas impactés pour les cours.

The #FSF is looking to seriously provide a fully #FOSS mobile environment under the #LibrePhone name. It does mention previous attempts at making a FOSS mobile environment practical for users, but not much came of it, save maybe for the mobile #Linux OSes and #Android derivatives that are available now. Here's hoping they don't reinvent the wheel and work with other, current projects that have made strides in this area.

Ok, so I was looking for a good FOSS desktop email client for my GPD MicroPC 2 running CachyOS.
I wanted something lighter than Thunderbird, and as I’m running KDE Plasma 6 I choose KMail.

WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?

After fiddling for 15 min I was still unable to connect to my IMAP server. It’s 2025 guys, any email client I cannot setup in less than a minute is dead and should not exists.
I’m not writing this because I feel entitled or important or because my time is so precious. I’m writing this because I’m a senior BSD/Linux sysadmin, with +20 years in the field of email servers / email admin & support. I’m very aware of «what’s going on» under the hood and still, I was unable to make it work. I can literally use openssl s_client to connect to my server, where KMail fails hard.

Eventually I’ve installed Thunderbird, in less than 60 sec I got mail synching. The longest step was to retrieve IMAP password from Bitwarden.

@mcnado I've been using Linux since 2003-04 and it's been my daily driver since 2006. Desktop #Linux has come a loooooong way since your first experience two decades ago.

Unless you have specific software which requires #Windows or #MacOS, especially considering the security issues and privacy violations, there is little reason to use them.

Today #microsoft is pushing for #windows11. I took the opportunity in my office and among my students to announce that I can be reached out for installing #linux on old pc, and even do it only on an external hard drive to not put their data at risk and allow them to keep access to their windows.
It works! I got one colleague reaching me (out of 20) and two students in a classroom of 25, I am not in computer science field. We can estimate that ~5% of average people may be taking the next step now, they just need to know that there is someone around to help them.

okay #linux and #selfhosting nerds, here's a question for ya. I have a bunch of drives that use USB enclosures. I have an older USB 3 enclosure (its chipset has to use linux's usb-storage driver). I have two identical versions of a newer USB 3.2 enclosure (chipset uses linux's uas driver without issue.. until now?). I have a mix of SATA drives; some 3TB, all the way up to 14TB. Using 'hdparm -t', I see speeds ranging from 140MB/s (the oldest 3TB drive), to 170MB/s (the only 5400RPM drive...

I like finding out stuff can be less complicated than how I used to do it. Like going from team bridging to bridging over a bond to realizing that all I actually needed was to setup vlan connections directly off the bond to accomplish what I needed to do, so it was like a total of 4 nmcli commands to setup an 802.ad bond and a vlan tagged con.

#Linux can lock accounts after login failures. For example, edit `/etc/security/faillock.conf` to set `deny=5` (lock after 5 failures) and `unlock_time=900` (15-minute lockout).

Allez, J'ai fait une clé bootable sur ZorinOS, j'ai remonté le vieux PC portable du garage et il a l'air d'avoir les spécifications minimales requises.

C'est pas pour tout de suite, il faut donner un coup de chiffon, rebrancher (je n'ai pas perdu le câble !), et avoir un peu de temps devant soi pour faire l'installation.

Mais j'ai tous les éléments pour essayer et sans peur de casser le matériel ! (un PC sous VISTA, ça peut pas empirer ^^)

A voir ensuite si je réussis l'installation et si ça me plait à l'usage !

Wondering when's the best time to prevent #LinuxKernel regressions from hitting #Fedora #Linux?

It's now, as the first pre-release of #kernel 6.18 is out – which leaves plenty of time to find, report, debug, and fix any problems that Fedora might encounter when it will switch to 6.18.y in about eleven weeks. And testing is not even hard: just use the mainline-wo-mergew copr (https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/g/kernel-vanilla/mainline-wo-mergew/).

In case you want to play it a bit safer, then testing in two or three weeks is still great! But you really should be testing 6.18-rc6 (five weeks from now), as Linus by then wants all regressions fixed. But at the same time there is still enough time to report, debug, and fix many problems before they reach Fedora – or Arch Linux and openSUSE Tumbleweed, that just like Fedora regularly switch to the latest upstream series.

Testing a newer kernel series only one or two weeks before it enters Fedora[1] is way too late: most bugs can't be fixed anymore before Fedora has to switch to the new series, as the previous series by then is usually obsolete and unsupported upstream.

[1] e.g., either as part of a "kernel testing week" or through the "updates-testing" repos – this is how the update to 6.17.y will soon be prepared for #Fedora 41 and 42, which right now are still on 6.16.y, which was EOLed yesterday.

Je ne suis pas gamer mais #CyberPunk2077 est le jeu de ces dernières années (avec #TLOS) qui me donne furieusement envie de tomber dans la marmite !
