The tesseract #lemmy frontend dev decided to introduct a DDoS on their flounce post on dubvee.org targetting our instance. Absolute scumbag behaviour which is wild from someone who saw themselves as a #fediverse hero.

Anyone have the TL;DR; on self hosted fediverse software?

Mastodon vs Snac vs Pleroma vs ?

I'm looking for something that is super low maintenance and lightweight / easy on resources but as full featured as practical within those constraints.

Something easy to tune re: post lengths and media types would be cool too. A "text first" platform is desired.

I've run Mastodon in the past and it's like fishing with nukes for this use case.

Trying out this #introduction thing (finally).

Unemployed computer tech and aspiring novelist. Came to Mastodon because of the #foss and #fediverse thing, as I'm quite fond of open standards and non-corporate media (and well, anything really). I wasn't quite sure how to use it since I had never touched xitter, and didn't get the whole micro-blogging thing. I was always more of a forums/Reddit kind of person (I'm on Lemmy now instead BTW). But I found this place to be a great source of information, support, and community regarding autism and #NeuroDiversity since I am a late-self-realized #actuallyautistic and #ActuallyADHD (a.k.a. #AuDHD ) Turns out that "neurodiversity" has been a "special interest" of mine for a long time, before I even knew the word for it. So I spend a lot of time here, probably more than I should. 😛

I'm also working on several projects that I guess can only be collectively referred to as "social benefit" projects. I'll talk about those occasionally and even asking for help, because they are big projects that will need many people and I don't work so well by myself.

And I'm also one of those progressive, lefty, pinko, equal rights, social justice, digital freedom, privacy advocating, LGBT+ ally type people. I grew up on Star Trek ok? They debated whether a cloud of gas or a big rock was actually a person or not. Makes the crap we have to deal with right now IRL seem pretty stupid.

So if you like talking about that kind of stuff, or any of my copious other SpIns (many of which are in my profile), I'm game.

Most recent project to implement #ActivityPub and join the #fediverse on this basis was #Vutuv, a jobs social network (LinkedIn alternative). The Blog Option in littleFedi

littleFedi, like many social platforms, had both a strength and a limit. Posts, by their nature, are ephemeral. They get published, federated (unless local-only, which littleFedi handles) and then, over time, lost. Partly through self-deletion, partly through their normal blending in with the thousands of other posts that pile up over time. Sometimes, though, we want something to stay. And not just stay as a social post, but as an actual blog. A bit like with BSSG, I had thought it would be convenient to have a minimal system. Not to compete with WordPress or other solutions, but to have a small blog, integrated into littleFedi, that would produce and serve a blog updated every now and then, whenever the person writing felt like doing it.

And that's why the blog option was born.

The idea is simple: when you write a post, from the web UI or from the CLI, there's a checkbox, "blog post". If you check it, that post stops being just a status that will scroll past and disappear. littleFedi renders it into a real static site. No JavaScript, just HTML and CSS, an Atom feed, tag pages, a chronological archive. Nothing exotic, nothing that needs maintenance five years from now.

The blog isn't a parallel system you have to feed separately. It's not an export, not an import, not a bridge to some other CMS. The post you wrote is the blog post. Same database, same act of writing, still boostable, still repliable, still part of the conversation on the fediverse side. The blog is just a second representation of the same content, generated automatically. Every time you create, edit, or delete a blog post, the whole static site for your account gets rebuilt from scratch, and the new version replaces the old one atomically, so nobody ever lands on a half-built page. If the build fails, the previous version stays in place. Simple, but it has to work reliably, or the whole idea is pointless.

That's the core of it: two representations of the same post. As a status, it lives in the fediverse, interactive, part of the conversation, subject to replies and boosts like anything else. As a static page, it lives on the web, durable, indexable, with a permalink, something an RSS reader can hold onto. You don't have to decide in advance which posts deserve to last. You write normally, and if something turns out to be worth keeping, you flag it, and it gets its own page.

One detail I cared about while thinking this through: the generated site has to be self-contained. When littleFedi builds it, media gets copied or hard-linked into the generated directory - images, audio, video. If it's stored on S3, it keeps its public URL directly. Either way, the point is that the site on disk doesn't depend on the instance staying up. If the server goes down tomorrow, the blog files are still a complete, working website. That wasn't an afterthought, it was one of the requirements from the start.

Not every account gets a blog, and that's intentional. The instance admin has to enable the feature globally ([blog] enabled = true), and then grant it per account. It's not meant to be a CMS, and I didn't want it to become one. Blog posts can't be replies, can't be boosts, have to be public and top-level. These are constraints, not missing features: the blog is for your own writing, not for threads or reshared content.

There's no JavaScript anywhere in the generated site. That was deliberate too. It loads fast, it works offline if you cache it, and it will still render correctly in ten years without anyone having to update a dependency.

In the end, the blog option doesn't ask you to choose between writing socially and writing something permanent. You keep writing the way you always do, on littleFedi, and if a post is worth keeping, you check a box. No separate platform, no migration, no vendor lock-in. Just your own posts, some of them rendered into a small static site you can host anywhere, built out of something that already existed on the open web.

Remember: all this is being currently served by a Raspberry PI Zero W powered by NetBSD

It's been said a lot that tech people tend to think that every problem can be solved with a tech solution, and that that is often a wrong approach that ignores social dynamics and systemic causes.

That's true, but I can think of at least one problem here on the Fediverse that really, really needs a tech solution!

That being hashtags.

The whole point of hashtags is that you can tag your content with concepts it relates to, so that others who are interested in said concepts can discover your content.

Ideally, a hashtag should therefore contain all posts relating to the concept, and should not contain any posts unrelated to the concept. This is not the case.

The problem is that hashtags are plain text only. This causes two kinds of issues:

• False positives: One hashtag is used for multiple separate concepts, grouping unrelated concepts together.
• False negatives: Multiple hashtags are used for the same concept, meaning you might miss posts of a concept you want to see.

Common examples for false positives are homonyms (seating bank vs. financial bank, video games vs. board games), abbreviations (CNC, BBC, MTF), and multilingual issues (German handy vs. English handy).

False negatives are much, much more common, even. You're missing out on synonyms (horses vs. equines), grammatical and regional variations (colouring vs. coloring, horse vs. horses) and scope issues (gaming vs. games vs. video games) at least. Also, the whole thing about 'dogsOfMastodon' versus 'dogs'.

If you add to it that the Fediverse is multi-lingual, this is getting exponentially worse. If a German account posts about dogs using the hashtag 'Hund' (or Hunde, Hundes, Hunds, Hundi, Wauwau, Köter, Welpe, Welpen...), someone subscribed to the English hashtag 'dogs' should probably also see that post.

Rather than plain text which has all of these issues, a hashtag should therefore point at an individual unique ID of a concept, unique and unambiguous across all languages and grammatical forms.

Someone should be able to subscribe to the concept of a horse – the equine animal – and not just the letters 'horse' in that order!

That might sound daunting – who has a database of all concepts in the world? – but structured data actually is a super old problem that has been talked about for ages! The semantic web has it figured out.

Wikidata is an open data source for unique concepts, doing exactly what we'd need. Obviously it's easier said than done, but 'all' that the Fediverse needs to do is replace or extend hashtags with a system that allows you to link a Wikidata concept by UUID. And figure out what to do with things that don't have such a UUID yet, and how to handle UX. But it would be a vast improvement over plain-text hashtags.

I don't really want this post to just die in the ether, tbh, as posts are wont to do. I'd like to actually make this a thing. Is there anyone out there who knows what an implementation of this would take? I'd love to help (computational linguist).

When I was still facilitator of #SocialHub I claimed that it wasn't a community in any real sense, with mostly #developers driving by on self-interested motives. It was just a discussion #forum, where a poor commons janitor (me) had to do the unthankful volunteer upkeep.

"Expectation mismatch" plays an important role when anyone mentions "community". A "community-driven #FOSS project" is partly the formal #governance that is in place, but mostly implicit cultural aspects. Knowing what you can expect is important, to not get disappointed.

A #fediverse instance to me isn't #community. I only use the Home timeline.

As we navigate fedi we 'weave' in and out of #communities seamlessly, without realizing it. A rich concept of inter-community #Social networking is possible, I think, but it should be carefully designed.

I may be sounding tongue-in-cheek, but I've been humouring the idea of "the email of social media" and/or "social media of email".

I'm trying to see just how viable such an interface will be.

Pretty much embrace the email-like nature of ActivityPub.

The folks who looooove acting competitive (you know, antagonism towards a competing ideas) love to scoff at ActivityPub (well, really, the Mastodon protocols overall).

I actually don't think they're wrong.

For this reason, I think ActivityPub is fine for what it is.

In fact, embrace it.

Treat it like email, with one added feature: the idea of "following".

Scattered thoughts on social geolocation

I want to be able to share my location with my friends on social media. Twitter (RIP) had a way to attach an optional location to a post. Facebook still lets me check in to venues. But neither ActivityPub (Mastodon) nor AT Protocol (BlueSky) allow me to do that.

I've been banging on about this for a while so was delighted to be invited to chat with the GeoSocial Task Force on their monthly call.

But, before I start, please remember that these proposals are not mandatory. If you don't want to share your location, then please don't share your location. This is an optional feature which shouldn't be used by people with a strong need for privacy.

We were primarily discussing the nascent Geographical Microsyntax proposals.

Firstly, I love the idea of being able to share my location. I want my friends to know I'm in town for a gig. I want people to think I'm cool because I'm seeing some experimental theatre. I want to virtue signal that I'm giving blood.

Similarly, I want to be able to find social media posts by location. What's happening right now in Paris? Did anyone else hear that sonic boom in London? Which cool people are also at this gig with me?

But, I do think these proposals have some issues which need to be addressed.

User Research

The primary thing missing from the proposal is any form of understanding what users want to do with a geotagged post.

You see a post like:

Hanging out with friends. I just checked in to Leicester Square.

What do you expect to happen when you click that link?

• See who is at the location?
• Read more information about the place being discussed?
• Find all posts at that specific address?
• Discover posts which are close to there?
• Something else?

What other things do people want to do with geotagged posts?

• Find all posts within 5Km of me?
• Discover users who have posted near me?
• Get emergency alerts for the city I'm in?
• See what's trending in a specific country?

Without knowing what people might want to do with this information, it's rather hard to design a service which meets their needs.

To micro or not to micro?

Where I disagree with the proposals is the idea of using inline text as a form of microsyntax.

Proposals like "I am in /London/ eating ice-cream" or "Checked in to Leicester Square L:N123456" fail for a couple of reasons.

Things like #hashtags and @mentions developed organically on social networks before they were eventually adopted by the platforms themselves. It is rare that a top-down diktat can be used to tell people how they should be formatting their posts.

More importantly, people are crap at formatting things consistently! Every event I go to has people using #Event alongside #Event2026 or #Event26 or a hundred variations.

Even if users could format it consistently, names are ambiguous. Is 🌐:Paris the one in France or Texas?

I'm strongly of the opinion that text is for text, not syntax.

Openness 🆚 Centralisation

Saying that you're on a specific point on the globe doesn't always provide useful information. Even with altitude, it isn't always possible to work out if your in the Starbucks or the Costa next door. Do you want to say you're in a train station, or a distinct platform, or even a specific train journey?

There are various services which offer unique IDs per loosely-defined place.

Google Maps provides a Place ID for every thing that it knows about. There's a similar service from FourSquare. But both of those are closed and proprietary systems - they can only be updated by the company that creates them.

Wikipedia's Wikidata has IDs for lots of places, similarly OpenStreetMap has nodes with names which can be used to identify locations.

But all of these suffer from the same flaw; they are centralised.

If Google kills its service then all those Place IDs die.

This has happened before. Yahoo used to run the Where On Earth IDentifier service but discontinued it.

While OSM and Wikipedia are great projects, they're still centralised. If you're banned from OSM, you can't create a new node.

So, to my mind, the primary way of identifying a place has to use a fully open, globally agreed, and unrestricted standard.

Location Plus Plus

The obvious choice is latitude and longitude as defined by WGS 84. It allows for arbitrary precision anywhere on the planet.

No one can stop you issuing lat/long just because a country is under sanctions. The standards community can't revoke your access to it. The co-ordinates are well understood by almost all software.

There are some alternatives. Google's Plus.Codes build on top of lat/long to make something more human readable. But, crucially, human readability is not the issue here. This is metadata which should never be shown to a human. If a user interface wants to format a lat/long they can do so as a Plus.Code or any other format.

GeoJSON

There are dozens of competing ways to mark up a location.

It seems sensible to me that, given most major social media protocols use JSON, adding GeoJSON would be the simplest way to add geographic information to a post's metadata.

At its most basic, a single "Point" can be shared like so:

It can have as much or as little precision as needed.

If the place being checked into has a name, it can also be added - this could be used for display purposes within the message

The properties can be as complex as the sender wants. For example it could add Wikidata references, OpenStreetMap IDs, telephone numbers, or some cool new thing which hasn't been invented yet.

What's Next

My personal opinion is that the following needs to happen:

• Talk to some users - find out what they might use this for.
• Work with privacy advocates to reduce possible harms (for example, being able to redact a location from a previously shared post).
• Discuss with developers about how they'd work with this metadata.
• Clients should start adding GeoJSON metadata to their posts, even if it can't be displayed yet.

NodeInfo isn't part of #ActivityPub and neither is it required to be implemented by fedi software.

What #fediverse is and isn't is an interesting question. Does following between actors make the software on both ends part of the fediverse? Should a fediverse app support #microblogging? Be compatible with Mastodon?

Perhaps being part of fediverse means if 2 independent 3rd-parties are able to interoperate with each other? Does that require sending Follow msgs?

If someone has a federated Product catalogue that federates with itself and a 3rd-party Order delivery service, is it part of the fediverse? Even when no Follow is sent?

It is undefined what being part of the fediverse means. There used to be a Federated Network Association (Feneas) as a major dev community besides #SocialHub, which defined fediverse as any software that implemented AP, #XMPP, or #Matrix protocol.

@steve even wrote that nothing even truly implements AP, and I tend to agree.

Additionally, many people post in English, even when it's not their native language.

Also consider adding a hashtag relevant to the country or region you are posting about.

#Fediverse is a *social* network, right? About being different from corporate anti-social media. Has ambitions to be more diverse, inclusive, cohesive. To provide inter-community social networking where people with similar interests find each other and interact.

Like the #ActivityPub developer community, for instance. The group of people who make all this possible in the first place. Together they uphold the fediverse technology ecosystem and are collectively responsible for evolving it. They chose fediverse as their communication medium, dogfooding their creations, even though this comes with its disadvantages. #Microblogging is ephemeral and fleety and discussions are dispersed and fragmented. There are clear points of improvements for the #fedi, frequently discussed.

What's very odd is that most AP devs hardly:

1. Engage with other AP devs posts.
2. Boost each other's msgs for visibility.
3. Use hashtags for discoverability.

Low-hanging fruit for improvement?

If I may give a small tip that'll give more exposure to your message and the work you do: On the #fediverse it is common habit to add #AltText to images to support the visually impaired. On #mastodon this #a11y action is easily done by clicking 'Edit' on the image preview after adding it to the post draft. When alt-text is missing most fedizens will not boost the post.

Has anyone already developed something like a '15 day plan' to try the Fediverse, specifically targeted at helping communities/interest groups give it a go via a series of quick and easy steps?

I'm thinking something like this to help facilitate the beginnings of a migration:

Day 1: Browse the home feeds of these three servers suited to our shared interest(s).

Day 2: Choose one of those servers and register an account.

Day 3: Follow at least ten other accounts; here are 25 suggestions.

Day 4: Browse your new home feed.

Day 5: Browse your live feed (own server).

Day 6: Like a post.

Day 7: Boost a post.

Day 8: Reply to a post.

Day 9: Write an #Introduction post.

Etc etc.

Not sure if there's an existing framework that can be designed to work with #ActivityPub. But I do think that thinking about consent in a more general/generic sense would be a worthwhile effort. This should be something that is picked up at the #SocialCG level, or perhaps in #FEP documents first. A lot of the mechanisms that proliferate now are also app-centric and almost *assume* that #fediverse is a glorified #microblogging environment. The more that trend continues, the more that will indeed be the case. This is what my long blog post was about, that I wrote recently:

Absolute Madness how everyone thinks it is just okay to sprinkle magic opt-in / opt-out and other control words in the profile description of someone's #fediverse account!

Why do we have #ActivityPub be extensible if not for supporting a native mechanism to deal with consent? Why should there be out-of-bound ugliest of ugliest hacks?

With all that jazz being introduced it is no wonder people opt-in for #ATProto and other more sane social networking protocols that have robust protocol specifications, and not a metric ton of protocol decay to poop on top of your basic AP implementation so it becomes interoperable until the next on-the-fly hack by someone else breaks your nice code..

Fediverse is protocol impl + eternal whack-a-mole development and maintenance this way.

Today I successfully tested a migration from my 'historic' Akkoma instance to littleFedi, without changing the domain name and without breaking the federation.

The procedure involves extracting the keys, so federated instances will accept this without any issues. In their eyes, there will be no particular differences, and they will gladly digest it without breaking the federation.
I have documented the procedure and kept the tool. I'm probably going to create something similar for Mastodon, though it will be a bit more complex.

I promised it, so here it is. This is a recording of littleFedi running on a Raspberry Pi Zero W on NetBSD.

Everything is on the SD card, the database is SQLite, and caching is enabled.

Personally, I won't comment on responsiveness or anything else; I'll just say that when I use it (both via the web interface and with apps like MastoBlaster or IceCubes), I find it hard to believe what kind of hardware it's running on.

Users' sessions (by default, a maximum of 8 users but configurable) are kept "warm" with every interaction or federated activity for 15 minutes since the last login; after that, the server enters "low power mode" and simply processes incoming data without activating the (users' timelines, etc.) cache.

We don't need to get ripped off for more powerful hardware, which comes with outrageous costs these days.

We just need to optimize and build efficient software.

Abundance led to waste.

If I compare #ActivityPub #fediverse of today with that of a couple of years ago (as my acount perceives it), these are some of my observations:

- Being on a well-moderated instance I see a quieter, calmer fediverse.

- Less drama, performative activism, and purity spiral anti-patterns reach my timeline.

- People are genuine in their posts, yet doom & gloom dominate the feed.

- There are less posts than there used to be.

- In terms of interactions / engagement fediverse feels like a ghost town.

- But there are plenty nice discussions to participate in.

- People boost less, yet that is how we can grow and foster healthy culture at the same time.

- Posts with high engagement depend on weird virality dynamics, or relate to recognized influencers.

- In that sense this microblog space isn't much different than other platforms.

My #SocialExperience on this account is shaped by my history of years-long fedi / AP / FOSS advocacy, that made me choose whom to follow and who followed me.

reflecting a lot on #fediverse lately. instance hopping is such an event and sometimes disruptive. ive spent a lot of time running #chatmail relays and until recently contributing to upstream. we can relay hop and its almost silent. your cryptographic identity is owned by you, not the relay operator. giving you a feeling or being nomadic. servers go down, operators retire or fade out. but you keep your identity.

this works great for #deltachat and enjoy the flexibility. but #activitypub doesn't have an agreed upon implementation. @silverpill is doing great work with his research and #mitra ecosystem. my hopes are eventually we'll see this on fedi across the ecosystems.

The littleFedi caching system is configurable and adaptable. Caching helps immensely, and for this very reason, you can choose to keep the cache "warm."

By default, if enabled (which makes a lot of sense on slow hardware), the system tracks user activity over the last n minutes (15 by default). For those minutes following the last interaction with the system, the cache will be kept warm.

Does a new post arrive in the timeline? It gets processed and cached, immediately (and partially) re-processing the timeline cache. The user will see it immediately in the timeline.

On a Raspberry Pi Zero W running NetBSD on an SD card, this means dropping the timeline generation time from about 5 seconds down to roughly 0.20 seconds.

After 15 minutes of inactivity from the user, the system will stop keeping the cache warm, reducing the CPU load to nearly zero (provided you aren't doing local processing of remote images, of course - which is also configurable). Upon the user's first visit, it will take a few extra seconds (cold cache), but from that moment on, everything will be almost instantaneous.

There's also a cache for the federation activities (a boost won't cause constant reprocessing of that post), but this isn't that different from other implementations' approach.

Je veux bien faire des efforts mais là je suis un peu découragé en vrai.

Bon alors mes expériences pixelfed en tant qu'artiste pour diffuser mon travail.

pixelfed.fr, création du compte, rien ne se passe. Suite recherches sur le net je finis par trouver qui est derrière cette instance. Je contacte la personne, je peux finaliser la création de mon compte.
Très peu d’interactions, en même temps vue la difficulté de créer un compte, ça se comprend.

i'm sure inline json-ld contexts with server extensions seem like the wrong thing, but they're preferable to identical copies of the same context hosted externally and served by a dozen or more instances of a server or family of servers.

i could be persuaded to change my mind if a server allowed meaningful customization. but if a server is publishing a canonical vocabulary of extensions for that server, it should be hosted in a single, well-know location.

Hopefully when it comes to the EU the new strategy of @EUCommission around Digital Autonomy that has a big #FOSS component to it, will make our commons more sustainable.

Wifey found a place that will convert our old photographs, in bulk, for a reasonable rate. Spent a couple days going through a 4' x 2' x 2' cardboard box, ranging from late 1980s to mid 2000s. I got the packet down to about the size of two loaves of bread. Tossed all the dupes, negatives, and unwanteds.

As we discussed before I use different definitions, which I think fit better in how they shape our thinking around designing use cases in support of our social #communication online.

So, once more, I consider..

Social Networking is any direct or indirect human interaction between people.

That includes offline, where we social network for ages. And recently online since the rise of the #internet. We want #offline and #online to extend seamlessly into each other in support of our daily needs.

The crux is, we are still very primitive in learning how to do online social communication well enough. Lots to learn. We underestimate #social online.

#SocialMedia is a subset of #SocialNetworking against this definition. Moreover its an app-centric notion, same as #Microblogging is. And it shows: #fediverse duplicated existing centralized platforms' app functionality.

We want to focus on our modes of communication across different social contexts, and ability to express ourselves.

Romanian is one of the Romance languages i haven’t studied that have always been difficult to decipher due to its Cyrillic-esque orthography.

am learning to read it with #Mastodon’s translation feature.

humans #network thru #languages. if you want to grow the #fediverse, you must make it easy to translate what dazzles yet cannot be easily read.

yet another reason to love @Gargron’s vision of what the platform could be and the elegantly forward thinking work of the @MastodonEngineering team.

One caveat I might have, and this is not an issue with the article, of course, and I generally agree that "the fediverse needs more apps", but!

This is where the Atmosphere has a big advantage.

Yes, some of us might prefer to have separate accounts on different servers and platforms, and keep individual hobbies, interests, and other layers of our personality separate. I think that's fine.

But some of us might prefer to manage one account, and until nomadic identity is widely supported across the fediverse, having more apps to sign up for might not entice everyone.

But what I hadn't anticipated is that as things became more centralized, the will to fight for the internet as something in the public interest too would evaporate.

When I have conversations with family members and friends who haven't yet thought much about the age verification and similar bills and their consequences, they've said "well, someone has to hold corporations like Meta" responsible. To which I say, "but what about all the smaller, non-corporate parts of the internet?" To which, many people are surprised, because they've simply forgotten about those things.

When the internet and computing becomes five corporations to most people, they begin to treat it as the concerns of reigning in five corporations.“
