Time to thin the library of software engineering books that I no longer need or, in the case of the C++ ones, no longer (and never did) bring me joy. I doubt any charity shop will take these and I can’t just put them in recycling. If you would like any of these for the cost of postage (which for some will be sizeable), DM me. UK only, and I am in East Sussex if you wished to collect. Titles and weights in alt text. Please boost for reach and reuse!

Slackware is the first Linux distribution that I ever used. Before that it was hardcore hacking, where you needed to compile the kernel yourself in DOS, cross compile everything and all the other procedures that come into being

Slackware is the most mature distribution still being maintained

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slackwar

The image shows a screenshot of a mobile device displaying the Wikipedia page for "Slackware," a Linux distribution. At the top of the screen, there is a search bar with the text "Search Wikipedia" and a magnifying glass icon. The time is 10:07, and the battery is at 87%. Below the search bar, there is a screenshot of a Slackware 15.0 system interface, showing a menu with options like "Users," "Accessibility," and "System Administration." The main content area of the Wikipedia page is black with white text, highlighting that Slackware is a Linux distribution created by Patrick Volkerding in 1993, originally based on Softland Linux System (SLS). It mentions that Slackware has been the basis for many other Linux distributions, including the first versions of SUSE Linux distributions, and is the oldest distribution that is still maintained. The bottom of the screen shows navigation options such as "Save," "Language," "Find in article," "Theme," and "Contents."

Europe really does have the best conferences, especially for open source software. I wish I could get out of this US bubble and immerse myself in that ecosystem more to enjoy making a living out software again.

              6.17-rc2 is out:

[…] One day we're bound to hit that mythical merge window that doesn't introduce any bugs at all.

This merge window wasn't _that_ good, but maybe it was simply better than most?

FreeBSD: The Really Alternative Desktop OS

The image shows a SBC computer screen with a web browser open to a YouTube page. The main focus is a video titled "FreeBSD - The Really Alternative Desktop OS," featuring a 3D model of a computer board, likely a Raspberry Pi, with various components like USB ports and a cooling fan. The video has 1K views and was uploaded 5 months ago. The browser's address bar shows the URL "www.youtube.com/watch?v=6v9m5d1DIrE." On the right side, there are related video suggestions, including titles like "Linux Survival Guide 2: Running Windows Applications" and "The Making of BSD." The background of the browser window shows a sunset over water. The desktop environment appears to be a BSD-based system, with various application icons visible in the taskbar.

It was considered known that there is no support within GNAT (Ada) for illumos. We cross-build a complete native binutils+gcc toolchain for illumos to test out this claim.

I have *sincere* doubts whether SELinux truly improves security on a Linux desktop, or whether it is just a royal PITA.

Because clearly, an openvpn script wanting to drop in a dnsmasq config files & reload a systemd service should be this fun.

Just how many people do y'all think don't just swat this with "selinux=0" and move on with our lives?

                                    BSD Cafe Announcements »
                                    @announcements@mastodon.bsd.cafe

Dear friends of the BSD Cafe,

This idea has been in my mind since the very beginning of this adventure, almost two years ago. Over time, several people have suggested it. But until recently, I felt the timing just wasn’t right - for many reasons. Today, I believe it finally is.

So I’m happy to announce a new service:
The BSD Cafe Journal - journal.bsd.cafe

At first, I thought I’d use BSSG for it (I even added multi-author support with this in mind), but in the end, it didn’t feel like the right tool for the job.

The idea is to create a multi-author space, with content published on a fairly regular basis. A reference point for news, updates, tutorials, technical articles - a place to inform and connect.
Just like people in Italy used to stop by cafes to read the newspaper and chat about the day’s news, the BSD Cafe Journal aims to be a space for reading, sharing, and staying informed - all in the spirit of the BSD Cafe.

                                    What it’s not:
It’s not here to replace personal blogs, or excellent newsletters like @vermaden ’s. And it’s not an aggregator.

                                    What it is:
A place where authors can write original content, share links to posts on their own blogs or elsewhere, publish guides, offer insights, or dive into technical explanations.

The guiding principles are the same as always: positivity, constructive discussion, promoting BSDs and open source in general. No hype (sharing a cool new service is fine, posting non-stop about the latest trend is not), no drama, no politics. The goal is to bring people together, not divide them. To inform, not inflame.
Respect, tolerance, and inclusivity are key. Everyone should feel welcome reading the BSD Cafe Journal - never judged, offended, or excluded.

The platform I’ve chosen is WordPress, for several reasons: it’s portable (runs well on all BSDs), has great built-in role management (contributors, authors, etc.), and - last but not least - supports ActivityPub.
This means every author will have their own identity in the Fediverse (like: @stefano ) and can be followed directly, and it’ll also be possible to follow the whole Journal.

Original and educational content is encouraged, but it’s also perfectly fine to link to existing articles elsewhere. Personally, I’ll link my technical posts from ITNotes whenever I publish them there.

The goal is simple: a news-oriented site, rich in content, ad-free, respectful of privacy - all under the BSD Cafe umbrella.

Content coordination will happen in a dedicated Matrix room for authors. There’ll also be a public room for discussing ideas, giving feedback, and sharing suggestions.

Of course, I can’t do this alone. A journal with no content is just an empty shell.
So here’s my call for action:
Who’s ready to lend a hand? If you enjoy writing, explaining, sharing your knowledge - the Journal is waiting for you.

                                        • Maybe because as Software- was tasked with checking itself and the underlying filesystems like were taked to check integrity on their level as well?

After all physical device <=> physical volume partution <=> logical volume groups (w/ RAID) <=> filesystems were used in classic -RAID transparently to each other.

You know, I gave #emacs devs shit a few days back for not putting screenshots of their packages working on their git repos. But it's not an emacs problem. For some silly reason, a lot of FOSS devs refuse to put an image of their app on their repo. It is especially egregious when it's a GUI app or a color scheme. #linux #foss

A note that if you want to help people move to using Linux, one *option* is to build them an independently running USB SSD.

I've documented a good method for doing this, which has two distinctions:
                                                - it allows them to not modify their existing computer at all;
                                                - it will be their *long term* portable Linux, that can be used with (most) other computers.

                                                The one big caveat:
                                                - for each run-time host computer, they will need to find out how to have it boot from USB.

The only way the community at large moves forward is to keep conflict within the domain of friendship. That way we can hold our differences, and learn to synthesize the disagreements.

And please, please don't assume that someone is your ally just because they agree with you on one technical point. I don't have a problem with X11 being maintained until the end of time, I just don't want it to be led by someone with really horrible/destructive politics.

It's not #CancelCulture, it's mercy. I would like to see a destructive ideology "canceled," people are never my enemy.
