I've never hidden my admiration for #illumos-based systems. I have a few setups based on #OmniOS and #SmartOS, and they're solid as a rock. I like them both: OmniOS is more "malleable", while SmartOS is more of a hypervisor like #xcp-ng or #xen - meaning you install it on the host and delegate everything else to the zones.
I also love #FreeBSD jails, but zones sometimes cover use cases that jails can't (and vice versa). For example, imposing RAM limits in jails works, but it effectively "denies more ram" to a process when it requests more memory. The end user doesn't see this directly. On illumos, the user sees everything. I have some `lx` zones with Debian and Virtualmin, and users have never noticed that they aren't really on #Linux. A free or top will show only the assigned RAM.
And that's one of the biggest problems with open-source operating systems: they all have something good, and I always feel the urge to use them all! 🙂

The Linux Foundation is a 501(c)(6) organization; it explicitly exists for the benefit of its members. This is in contrast to 501(c)(3) organizations, which are explicitly for the public benefit. The FreeBSD, NetBSD, and Plan 9 Foundations are 501(c)(3) organizations. I am less well-versed in Canadian tax codes, but my understanding is the OpenBSD foundation is their equivalent of a (c)(3). LF is a notable outlier here.
Repeat after me: The Linux Foundation are a bunch of Big Tech bellends. Don’t listen to a single thing they say.

De mes premiers pas avec #Ubuntu à l'adoption de #Debian : 20 ans d'aventures #Linux.
En 2006, j'ai fait mes premiers pas dans l'univers Linux avec Ubuntu 6.x. J'ai découvert les interfaces #Gnome et #Unity, avant de m'orienter vers la légèreté de #Xubuntu avec #Xfce.
L'aventure s'est poursuivie avec Linux #Mint, où j'ai passé de longues années entre Xfce et #Cinnamon. Et en 2025, c'est finalement Debian qui a conquis mon bureau avec son interface Gnome.
Tonight the mood struck me so I took the plunge and installed #PaperlessNGX <https://docs.paperless-ngx.com/> on my primary home #Linux box.
It's an open-source document management system that transforms paper documents into a searchable online archive. More digital, less paper!
If it works as advertised I hope to greatly decrease the amount of paper I'm shoving into our file cabinet.
I'll probably blog about my experience after I've been using it for a while.

The Screenshot tool that comes with Linux Mint does what I need most of the times. For more advanced uses I've found Flameshot, a cross-platform tool which can annotate screenshots.

Fun personal fact: First time I tried to install Linux, I downloaded and burned Fedora *source* isos which didn't work (5 discs, IIRC). I then successfully downloaded and installed DEBIAN (only 1 disc), but got a command line prompt. After testing every DOS/NT command I knew, I never got a GUI, so I went back and burned the proper Fedora Core installer (another 5 discs).
In an alternative reality, I would have been a Debian loyalist.

If you're running Nextcloud on top of Apache2 on Debian 12 server and after upgrading to Debian 13 server it refuses to start up again, do the following:
a2dismod php8.2
a2enmod php8.4
systemctl restart apache2

Ils sont pour l'instant stockés sur HDD externe accessible via firewire, auquel j'accède traditionnellement via mon vieux mac mini de 2010 + NAS connecté en USB.
Pas possible de détecter le murena par le mac mini en USB.
Pas possible d'accéder au firewire via mon portable win.
MAIS j'ai aussi Ubuntu sur mon portable.
Gentils linuxiens, pourriez-vous svp m'aider à trouver la commande pour accéder au HDD externe connecté à Ubuntu via le NAS ?

Une annonce pour des cours d'informatique pour apprendre à utiliser Linux :

✨💻 Aujourd’hui, mission accomplie : j’ai donné une seconde vie à un Acer Aspire V3-571G trouvé à petit prix 🛒 (45€).
J’y ai ajouté un SSD 128 Go (12€), installé Linux Mint XFCE 🐧… et maintenant il démarre au quart de tour ⚡.
🔧 En bonus : je me suis formé au démontage (vis cachées, nappes fragiles, clips récalcitrants).
Résultat : je n’ai plus peur d’ouvrir un portable 💪
Et ce vieux i5 tourne parfaitement, prêt pour la bureautique, le web et même un peu de montage vidéo 🎬.
♻️ Preuve qu’avec un peu de temps et quelques euros, on peut sauver du matériel de l’oubli ! Direction la salle des profs ! ❤️ #Reconditionnement #Linux #Libre #Bricolage #Education #NIRD
