      Y recuerden chicos:

Okay, I am now reaching a critical frustration-level with
My distro-usage pattern is that I stay with a distro until my frustration level rises higher than my tolerance level, and I've just hit it, due to Debian's "I'm not going to update stuff" tendency. In this case, "ydotool", whose current version is 1.04, has a version on Debian of... 0.1.8! That's...
How am I going to change over to a Wayland-based environment if I don't have a usable replacement for xdotool?

        Grrrr.

          Kerr Avonsen (she/her) »
          @kerravonsen@mastodon.au

Now, of course, y'all have your own opinions about what distro to change to... with the leading condenders in our recent discussion about tiling window managers being and - I think my Cunning Plan is to take it slowly -- which is why I was trying to install ydotool in the first place!

Step 1: Replace the hard drive on my laptop with a BIG drive. I'd been meaning to do this anyway, eventually, because I made a stupid mistake when I'd ordered that laptop originally, not getting a big enough drive.
Step 2: Since a replacement drive requires one to install a distro from scratch, then I will install a NEW distro from scratch.
Step 3: Take a couple of weeks to set up the laptop to my exact desires.

So, geeks, tell me, between and which one? Okay, sure y'all love your favourites, but I need more data than "this is great".
            My requirements:
            1. Has LOTS of packages
            2. The packages are up-to-date without being bleeding edge
            3. I am not forever trying to fix bugs with the packages/distro.

Thought #1 (when seeing this article):

It's slow-news season, so someone yet again wrote something about what happens when Linus for one reason or another stops maintaining , as it's been a while since that topic made the rounds.

Thought #2 (when reading ""When @torvalds goes, the sense of discontinuity will be hard to bear, and the opportunism of commercial interests to grow influence will be non-zero. These are problems now that need addressing before they are ripened by events, and this is where succession planning should take place.""):

I might be wrong, but my gut feeling says that "planning the succession" bears more risk that commercial interests will try to use those plans to grow influence.

                  Thought #3:

Someone should ask 10 or 15 core developers if they think Linux would be at risk if Linus would be hit by a bus tomorrow.

                  [edit]

                  Thought #4:

There for 20+ years now was always someone that was clearly considered "second in command" that could take over when needed (and the current person actually did for one cycle); sure, it's neither public nor written down as such, but it's kind of agreed on among the core developers afaics, so it's not like there is no "succession plan".

A political appeal by a democratically minded European based on the dramatically changing situation and its consequences in the field of technology and IT:

Guys, if for whatever reason you are still working with Windows (or Apple, Google...), I can only urge you to take the current circumstances as a reason to switch to Linux and free software! Never has such a switch been more appropriate and important!

The end of Windows 10, Microsoft's coercion towards MS accounts and cloud compulsion, all the advertising spam from MS within Windows 11, the artificial hardware requirements for it, the AI compulsion in Windows, the data exploitation including data sales and telemetry behavior, the integrated spyware, and so many other negative and bad things!

And on top of that, there are the current political developments in the fascist states of America. Uneducated idiot, fascist, anti-democrat and narcissist with a severe minority complex – and best friend of child molester Epstein – Trump is turning the country into a fascist dictatorship, and the big American tech companies are bowing to the convicted criminal, most recently Tim Apple– ready to hand over all the data he demands and install surveillance tools, and not even stopping at Europe and Europeans.

Trump's hatred of Europe is well known, as is his admiration for war criminal and mass murderer Putin. Who knows what other brown crap will spill over the Atlantic to us.

That's why, dear people, and especially those outside the US (unfortunately, we can't help the good and decent people there, but they elected the brown problem in the White House themselves): Linux and free software now!

We’ll talk about the costly operations that are involved, such as VM exits, VM entries, context switches, and userspace processing by Qemu. Then we’ll introduce vhost and elaborate on how it addresses these issues by moving data-plane operations either into the kernel (kernel-based vhost) or into a specialized userspace process (via vhost-user).

We’ll then dive into both -based vhost and vhost-user architectures, examining each in detail—including their advantages, drawbacks, typical use cases, and how they affect performance. […]"

                                    Customized Distro Questions

I have a couple of questions about a customized Distro I’m making for my dad (sending him a USB to install it from) that’s easy to use (he’s always been extremely tech illiterate - he only learned how to use a computer thanks to Linux, but that version of Ubuntu he had learned on is over 10 years old now) and I can connect to via Rust Desk that has a custom icon that says “help” (using Mint 22.1)

So far, the closest to success I’ve had is using Systemback - it perfectly copied the system as set up.

But, there’s just one big problem - the installer.

The installer, despite being a GUI, is not user friendly. Not only are there a lack of instructions (making it unintuitive on what you need in order to be able to click “next” even if you are basically tech literate), but it involves manually partitioning the hard drives into 3 partitions - there’s also no “erase all and use the whole drive” option.

My question is, can I edit or replace the installer Systemback uses, for something slightly easier, or if not feasible:

Can I use the terminal in Cubic to change a program’s icon, move the panel (optional), and pin a program to the panel, as well as set up Firefox to not have AI, change the search engine, font size, and bookmarks, as well as install uBlock? (I’d install Librewolf, except that it doesn’t store browsing history by default, which he relies on).

Provided, of course, that neither the BIOS nor any other operating system ever tries to write to it. If they do, bad things will happen.

Pretty soon we're PRing Bazaar to -- we're likely going to need some guidance as we go through the review process.

So I'd like to put some background out there to share our experiences shipping Bazaar in Bazzite, Bluefin, and (soon!) Aurora.

It's concerning to me that arguably *the* way to get Linux apps, Flathub, has all of its packaging data hosted on GitHub, with seemingly no plans to move away from it. With the direction GitHub is going, I am worried that Flathub will want to move and it'll be too late to do it cleanly.

I like them both: OmniOS is more "malleable", while SmartOS is more of a hypervisor like -ng or - meaning you install it on the host and delegate everything else to the zones.

I also love jails, but zones sometimes cover use cases that jails can't (and vice versa). For example, imposing RAM limits in jails works, but it effectively "denies more ram" to a process when it requests more memory. The end user doesn't see this directly. On illumos, the user sees everything. I have some `lx` zones with Debian and Virtualmin, and users have never noticed that they aren't really on . A free or top will show only the assigned RAM.

And that's one of the biggest problems with open-source operating systems: they all have something good, and I always feel the urge to use them all! 🙂
