Saw a comment on The Register praising FreeBSD because "no systemd", that isn't something to be proud of lol. I really do not get the whole contempt towards systemd. Just seems like people unwilling to accept change to me.
It works for me so why should I bother changing what works? Hell, systemd has been more reliable for me than Wayland (though that's apples to oranges - you get the idea, tho.)

Ok, any #video folks out there who know how to do what I want to do? I don't know what words to search for because I don't know what this technique is called. Boosts welcome, suggestions welcome.
I have a pool cleaning robot. Like a roomba, but for the bottom of the pool. We call it poomba. Anyways, I want to shoot an MP4 video with a stationary camera (a GoPro) looking down on the pool while the robot does its work. So I will have this overhead video of like 3-4 hours.
I want to kinda overlay all the frames of the video into a single picture. So the areas where the robot drove will be dark streaks (the robot is black and purple). And any area the robot didn't cover would show the white pool bottom. Areas the robot went over a lot would be darker. Areas it went rarely would be lighter.
I'm just super curious how much coverage I actually get. This thing isn't a roomba. It has no map and it definitely doesn't have an internet connection at the bottom of the pool. (Finally! A place they can't get AI, yet!) It's just using lidar, motion sensors, attitude sensors and some kind of randomizing algorithm.
I think of it like taking every frame of the video and compositing it down with like 0.001 transparency. By the end of the video the things that never changed (the pool itself) would be full brightness and clear. While the robot's paths would be faint, except where it repeated a lot, which would be darker.
I could probably rip it into individual frames using #ffmpeg and then do this compositing with #ImageMagick or something (I'm doing this on #Linux). But 24fps x 3600 seconds/hour x 3 hours == about 260K frames. My laptop will take ages to brute force this. Any more clever ways to do it?
If I knew what this technique/process was called, I'd search for it.

On August 15, 1997, @Migueldeicaza announced the start of GNOME on the GTK mailing list¹. Twenty-eight years later a lot has changed, but we continue to develop and iterate on “a free and complete set of user friendly applications and desktop tools… based entirely on free software.”
To help us continue this work far into the future, we hope you join us in celebrating our birthday by becoming a Friend of GNOME today! 🎂

One thing I appreciate about the upcoming #SUSE 16 is they're doing away with the SP vs minor versions thing between SLES and Leap.
I'm surprised there's no mention of "ALP" at all in this announcement.
Full SELinux support out of box (and I assume NetworkManager will be default) makes this a very welcome upgrade, IMO.
Finally did activate the NXP SE050 Secure Element in my Nitrokey 3 and generated new on-device keys, by using the amazing "oct" (openpgp-card-tools).
Almost entirely using the modern rust-based openpgp implementations now:
- oct for card management and file signing
- openpgp-card-ssh-agent for SSH authentication
- rsop-oct for file encryption/decryption and package signing
- oct-git for git signing of my code commits
The only part, where I still rely on classic openpgp, is my MUA KMail, where alternatives aren't yet supported.
And it's still a pain, that modern GPG implementations aren't available as Fedora packages *sigh* but cargo works sufficiently well for now.

I cleaned up the initial mess in June, second iteration this past week/ish. Generally, most of this hardware should be in one of the office racks (1U switch + 2x 0.5U patches + 1U UPS), specifically NOT in my walk-in closet. It's a work in progress.

@nigelharpur @OrionKidder … this is what it was like getting Kubuntu to work:
I need water in the kitchen.
25 steps. "Easy!"
But after each step I must stop & search the web for how to take the next step. I read 10 different opinions on how to do it, b/c the first 9 are unintelligible, sound too risky, or just don't work.
Eventually, a "solution" makes everything unstable. I have to stop and research to figure out if/how I can go back to zero.
Start over.
I fear I may die of thirst. #linux

Hep les geeks, please, je me pose une question : est ce qu'un mac book pro est compatible avec linux?
Je ne vous vois parler que de PC.

The state of #Linux packaging seems to be a perpetual mess. There is no standard packaging format among distros (something that I don't think will be resolved any time soon) and I've always viewed third party packaging tools like #snap and #flatpak with skepticism, mainly from a #security perspective.
After reading this, I'd rather deal with the perpetual mess of different package managers than the unraveling security headache that is Flatpak.

I found a technician who'd work on a Linux machine, and she solved my problem (I had no wifi whatsoever) the same day that she received it.
I realize the culture of Linux "fix it yourself!" and I tried. I got a buddy to help. We couldn't figure it out, so I paid a professional to fix it and then tell me how she did it.
I want to normalize this. For Linux to be viable, it can't just be a hobby OS. Paying pros to fix it, and set it up for you, is part of that.
Time flies! Another Friday, another `dnf update` and reboot cycle on my 5 Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) servers.
(These are my private servers, that I update every Friday so that I have the weekend to fix things, if needed. So far it was never needed as updates JustWork™)
UPDATE: All machines updated, rebooted and tested. No problems found, weekend can start!

In many home networks this might be a much better option than something like #NextCloud. Just run it on a #Linux system and go.
Hey, Linux people: a LOT of folks are screaming off Windows right now.
Be. Kind. To. Them.
They don't know much yet, so they are going to ask really basic questions. If you're KIND, you might get some to give it a try and stick to it bc they know they can ask for help. If you're unkind, you're showing them using Linux will be *worse* than Windows. If you can't bring yourself to be kind, then SAY NOTHING. Let others pick up that slack.
VirtualBox 7.2.0 is out — and it's a big one. Rejigged UI, support for running Windows ARM VMs, and (at last) hardware video decoding support in VMs on Linux hosts.

@matuzalem I use #Linux and #BSD on both my personal and business systems exclusively. I don’t even use #Microsoft365. Additionally, I wouldn’t consider using #GoogleWorkspace either. My business systems are completely on-premises. No cloud.
I have to install #Linux (#Ubuntu MATE) to some nonprofit institutional HP dud laptops which are infected with Windows and Bitlocker. Said Windows will not boot. I disabled Secure boot in the perfunctory bios and enabled usb boot but the machines still won’t boot from USB because #UEFI is insane. There is no legacy option. The windows boot loader is the only option in bios and it just forces windows.
I have literally never managed to get UEFI to install or boot Linux. And it’s clear Bitlocker has its fangs in more than the HDD but CMOS/BIOS too. Thanks.
The "systemctl soft-reboot" #systemd command is so cool

Finally a clean way to rapidly re-start everything other than the #Linux kernel… for me, it is extremely useful to be able to do that after applying desktop & graphics stack updates, and to be able to log back in within 10 seconds.
Throwing the idea out here: it would be very nice if someone figured out a way to write a #GNOMEShell extension to provide "Soft reboot" as an alternative to cold reboot!
If like me you use Arch Actually, note that there seems to be significant unavailability of much of the website right now, including the AUR contributed package resource.
I guess the first thing I would fund if I were a government (🤣) is an in depth study, as objective as possible, of the available options and their pros and cons
GrapheneOS is clearly in the running but at least in my mind there is still the vision of a pure #linux / convergence theme.
Multiple options might be viable, including from scratch. For the visible future this is the most consequential piece of software shaping the lives of billions.
Yea nah, 32GB RAM might be enough at some point, but I actually need 64GB RAM on a #Linux PC lol. A day's work with #Firefox lots of tabs (tbh, not that much) and lots of coding is enough to max my RAM usage - and unlike other desktops/OS perhaps, at least on #KDE, there's no warning either. The moment there's a RAM spike or wtv causing it to shoot to over 90%, everything's just frozen and the whole desktop responds to nothing. At that point u just gotta wait till forever to see if anything changes, otherwise, you'd need to force shut down your computer and hope it doesn't corrupt your filesystem (which has happened multiple times before, on multiple Linux PCs of mine/family's) :))) I guess I'm upgrading soon. also: I'm just realising how my usage is literally no different on
TIL that #OpenSUSE dropped Transactional Server from the 15.6 Leap installer, so I guess we're gonna install 15.5 and upgrade for the time being for new provisions of it.
Did you know that ^G historically makes a "bell" sound?
Want to relive that glory on #Linux now?
watch -n.1 echo -e '\\a'
It's funny, and a little bit sad. I've now been running Fedora/Linux as my primary OS for both laptop and desktop spanning multiple years.
There have of course been a few little things here and there where I've had to dive deep into configuration files etc. But overall a very smooth experience.
And a few days ago I started work again after a long vacation, and that meant going back to my Macbook Pro.
I did not like it, at all. It feels ... sluggish. Just... not a great experience at all. I've come to expect the Fedora/Linux experience to be the baseline of what an OS/UX/UI fluidity should feel like. And I'm using Gnome. Imagine when the day comes and I switch to hyprland.
I really god damn love my Framework/Fedora experience. Can't wait to get my hands on the Framework Desktop setup.
TIL: Do not run a #Linux upgrade (in this case to Debian 13) when the SW raid is degraded. Grub will complain "Couldn't find physical volume (null)" and not boot.
