So. #Linux #Mint habe ich nun zum Laufen bekommen. Bleibt vorerst DualBoot mit Drecks- #Windows, weil 2 Anwendungen nur unter Win laufen. 2 Ärgernisse: 1.) #Bluetooth via Asus-Adapter zur Soundbox will nicht funktionieren. 2.) Eine dauerhafte Einrichtung von NAS- Laufwerken sollte möglich sein, ohne die fstab anfassen zu müssen. Abgesehen davon, dass das bei mir nicht funktioniert, birgt die fstab viel Gefahrenpotenzial. Ich spreche das NAS jetzt via SMB-Starter und Lesez. an. 1/x

Auch wenn hier bereits laut widersprochen und diskutiert werden könnte, schieben wir das kurz bei Seite und stellen eine ganz andere Sache fest:
Selbst wenn #KDE Win11 1zu1 kopieren würde, mit seinem Schnörkel, den Gesten, der Darstellung und allem PiPaPo ... selbst wenn dem so wäre ... ließe sich dennoch im Gegensatz zu #Win11 nahezu alles daran anpassen und unliebsames über eine zumeist leicht zugängliche GUI deaktivieren.

Schieb unter Win11 mal die Leiste an den Rand...

Hatte diese Woche #Linux install Party mit 7-Klässlern gemacht. Ergebnis am Ende: Fast alle konnten #mxlinux innerhalb von 7 Minuten auf die 12 Jahre alten Laptops ballern von A-Z.

Heute einen nagelneuen Laptop (16GB, SSD, Ryzen 5) mit vorinstalliertem #windows 11 für einen Verwandten eingerichtet: Alleine bis ich zur Einrichtung des Kontos (eine Frechheit) gekommen bin hat es schon über eine Stunde gedauert, die der Laptop rumgerödelt hat.

My son has Windows 10 on his gaming rig and refuses to go to Windows 11. He wants me to help him get up to speed with Linux on this machine.

He's "just a user" in every stereotypical sense of the computer term so needs help for now. He's away from home for work for five days of the week so I'm hoping I can off-load a lot of the fiddly setup stuff for him.

I'm trying out CachyOS in a VM. The installer looks pretty slick.

I noticed it offers btrfs by default [ ☹️ ] but has zfs as an option [ 😍 ] so let's try that to start. Choosing KDE desktop.

In spite of being a fairly thick 2.8GB install ISO it still seems to download a lot over the wire at install time. Kinda sux on my small, metered, Internet connection.

Would've thought more would be on the media, or get to a first boot scenario before downloading a lot of files. What if install fails after downloading all that stuff over a metered connection?

Installer sits at 19% for a very long time with nothing indicating activity. Looking at the router is showing the traffic.

I'm hoping the rolling release nature of the distro is more "curated" than vanilla Arch.

Oh wow, I guess there's work being done on bringing back the Oxygen theme to #KDE Plasma? I've never used/not been familiar with Oxygen but it looks kinda like #Apple 's old #macOS or even Liquid Glass and I super dig it compared to the flat designs we have today on #Linux. Exciting.

Ceci étant dit, je trouve qu'on a tendance à surestimer la simplicité des logiciels propriétaires. Je dirais même que dans pas mal de cas, les logiciels libres sont beaucoup plus simples et beaucoup mieux foutus. Un exemple : personnellement, je suis passé à Gnunux en 2007, en remplaçant mon Windows XP par un Ubuntu 7.04. Eh bien une des choses qui m'ont frappés à l'époque, c'était la façon dont était géré le menu pour lancer des logiciels, l'équivalent du menu « Démarrer » des Windows de l'époque. Vous voyez, sur Windows XP, quand vous installiez un logiciel et que vous vouliez ensuite le lancer : il fallait cliquer sur Démarrer, puis Applications, puis trouver le dossier avec le nom de l'éditeur du logiciel – par exemple Adobe pour Photoshop – puis enfin le nom du logiciel. Alors que sur Ubuntu, bah quand j'installais Gimp, l'équivalent libre de Adobe Photoshop, pour le trouver dans le menu, je devais cliquer sur Logiciel, Graphismes. Et Gimp. C'est dingue. Et attendez, hein, quand j'installe un logiciel de bureautique, pareil : je le trouve dans Logiciel, Bureautique. Ceci est une révolution. Eh oui, mais c'est un exemple typique de comment une différence de philosophie fondamentale peut changer quelque chose qui a l'air trivial et qui pourtant rend un système plus ou moins complexe : sur Windows, l'important, c'est que l'éditeur du logiciel puisse afficher sa marque ; sur Gnunux, l'important, c'est que vous retrouviez facilement votre logiciel. I recently switched to #Linux Mint. I mean, the reasons are obvious so I will save that for a different time. What really struck me was just how easy it was to actually do it. Problems were minor and mainly due to the fact that I have an Nvidia card in my laptop.

Aside from that, I was up and running quickly. Apps I wanted, (including Steam,) were easy to find and install. There were a couple apps that I needed to find replacements for, like Notepad++.

The realisation just hit me that besides my work laptop I no longer use #Windows. I switched to #Fedora KDE Plasma Desktop a while back on my PC and I don't miss it one bit.
The few PC games I play run on #Linux with #Steam just fine but I think the real eye-opener has been how effortless Linux on the desktop is these days. If my sister ever throws out her #Chromebook I will put her on a distro with #KDE.

Update: problem solved without having to remove the shadows.

Instead of a chroma key, I set the background of my screen to pure black (#000000) and I’m using Luma key. Works beautifully with everything I’ve thrown at it so far in both light and dark mode.

Looking forward to documenting my setup after I finally record that video about Kitten’s new introspection API for the Kitten Shell (REPL).

Yak’s shaved along the way:

• Completely took apart my setup down to every wire and reconfigured it.
• Spring cleaned the whole office.
• Updated my recording/streaming process.

J'ai 2 fichiers identiques de 600 octets précisément stockés sur la même partition NTFS.

L'un prend (soit disant) 0 octet d'espace sur le disque, l'autre 4096 octets.

If you use #VeraCrypt full-disk encryption on #Windows, then READ THE ABOVE ARTICLE and pay attention to this developing story. If it hasn't been resolved in the next month or so then you are going to want to disable VeraCrypt on your computer to avoid being permanently locked out of your own computer when the VeraCrypt bootloader signing certificates expire and the maintainer isn't able to renew them.

In my previous jobs I learned that if a government wants to find and spy on you, it will do so anyway, no matter what the hell you use. If they can remove a president from his own country they'll find you however they want, and they'll grease your ass with oil if they want to.
Use whatever you want or whatever works well for you. For the past 36 years I've owned many computers and phones, and they're all pretty much the same.What matters is what you do with them.
I have one laptop and one desktop, both running Arch. But if I had more computers I would install Debian, Fedora, etc. on them. I work and have fun with the machines. I think it's great that there are many Linux desktops and many distros, that there are iPhones and Android, Windows, BSD, Unix, and there should be more different things.

Hormis tout le cortège de choses que je reproche à #Microsoft, aux #GAFAM et aux logiciels propriétaires en général, les versions de #Windows que j'ai considérées comme "potables" par le passé ont été :

- Windows 2000 Professionnel (le premier Windows performant et stable de l'histoire)
- Windows XP (dont la phase de maturité est survenue très tardivement)
- Windows 7

Mais cela constitue l'exception, et non pas la règle, qui relève quant à elle de l'immondice le plus répugnant.

Sometime around 2017 (IIRC) I got nostalgic for a little "netbook" type computer and decided, for some reason, that an HP Stream 14 would scratch that itch.

These are really low spec machines, even for 2016-2017. It came with Windows 10 and the first Windows Update basically filled the disk and effectively bricked the device. LOL!

I installed Linux on it after that (ofc) but didn't really use it much. So slow....

I was digging around in my service manuals library this evening and stumbled over it in a drawer of files... for some unknown reason it was in the drawer.

I started it up thinking it was still running Arch from back before Covid and might be entertaining to try to get it to update to the present.

Hmm, Alpine 3.21 boots console but sway is installed. Weird, no recollection of doing anything with this machine 12-18 months ago. "I'm not saying it's aliens..."

Ok, Alpine updates to 3.23 without issues. I'm not much of a tiling window manager person so I installed Plasma. Bad idea! With 4GB of ram and an afterthought of a CPU and storage it doesn't run very well at all.

Installed LXQt with labwc and it runs great! Tweaking and themeing to come. (Hi @Tionisla 👋 )

Not sure what I'm going to do with this machine but currently it is pretty usable for simple stuff. Screen and keyboard sucks, pretty close to e-waste. Lesson: ~$200 (retail) laptop is about as good as you would expect a $200 laptop to be. Ha.

We are always trying to make @Vivaldi better and our latest release is another example of that. This time our focus was on hiding the UI. Why we do that? Because some of you have been requesting a minimal UI and that is what we have now delivered, but with the UI always close and also fully under your control. Try it out and you will understand! It can be accessed from a button in the status bar or through CTRL F11. Hint : Try associating it with fullscreen (F11), for an even better experience! There is a setting for that, of course.

Another function we added is follow tab. Tie together two tabs side by side. Click a link on the left side and view it on the right side. Great for going through search results without having to go back and forth or viewing images or the like.

Boah ey, nächstes Thema mit Linux Mint. Es fordert mich bei der Installation auf vor der Installation in Windows den BitLocker zu deaktivieren. Wozu? Musste ich bei Fedora doch auch nicht. Da müsste ich nur nach der Installation einmal den BitLocker Key bei eingeben und gut war.
Da ich das Passwort der Windows Installation nicht habe ist hier dann heute Schluss.
Und wahrscheinlich ist das dann auch das Ende des Versuchs mit Linux, da selbst die Anforderung sich einmal anzumelden damit ich weiter machen kann wahrscheinlich bei der Besitzerin sofort zu einem Mental Meltdown führen wird.

Weniger blockierte Requests

Seitdem ich auf Linux und GrapheneOS umgestiegen bin, muss Pi-Hole deutlich weniger DNS-Anfragen blockieren. Die Werte gingen von knapp 15% auf 8% runter. Der Rest stammt von der Windows-Kiste der Liebsten, ihrem Stock-Pixel-Android und dem waipu-TV-Stick (also überwiegend die Apps wie Netflix oder Paramount+).

Das zeigt mir wieder, wie richtig meine Entscheidung war, aber auch, wieviel digitalen Schmutz die Hersteller produzieren, den wir einfach täglich ungefiltert fressen.

Egal ob Windows oder macOS: Beides kommt mir nicht mehr ins Haus. Der Nachwuchs wächst direkt mit Linux auf. Wer Kindern heute ein Betriebssystem beibringt, sollte ihnen nicht zuerst zeigen, wie man mit Werbung, Telemetrie und Kontozwang lebt. Die großen Desktop-Systeme entwickeln sich immer stärker weg vom Werkzeug und hin zur überwachten Plattform. Was früher Betriebssystem war, ist heute oft nur noch Überwachungssoftware mit Desktop-Oberfläche. Linux ist nicht perfekt, aber es behandelt Nutzer eher als Menschen und nicht als Datenquelle.

HaloWars2 ist unter Windows11 wieder so ein Krampf wie einst mit Windows10, gelegentliche Abstürze mitten im Spiel ohne nachvollziehbaren Grund und Neuinstallation schafft nur bedingt Abhilfe für ein paar Runden. Anstrengend und somit nichts für mich langfristig. 😡

Battlefield6 ist ein Witz und für mich der Nagel von EA! 🖕

GTA5 ist online unspielbar für mich wegen Cheatern sowie anderen Problemen. 🤮

Kurzum, bin endgültig fertig und geheilt von Windows sowie vermeintlicher Notwendigkeit dafür.

Linux Mint kann und hat alles was ich brauche, nur wesentlich Ressourcen effizienter. 😉

This morning, I went to the doctor for a scheduled appointment. While she was looking at the results of blood tests from two years ago on the screen (and suggested repeating them for a follow-up), I realized she was using Windows 11. A detail came to mind. The doctor is extremely polite and friendly, so I asked her, "How do you handle the feature called Recall?" The doctor was taken aback and had no idea what I was talking about. I was about to drop the conversation, but she, being a serious professional, immediately called the technicians who manage their PCs to ask for clarification. They downplayed it, saying it's not an issue and that it's a feature "on all PCs, so we can't do anything about it." She started to express that she didn’t like it and wanted it deactivated. No luck: they won’t proceed because, according to them, even deactivating it is "a hack that could compromise future updates." She’s furious and will talk to her colleagues and the decision-makers. She wants secure systems because "there’s patient data involved."

In reality, patient data is stored on servers (which I haven't investigated), but everything that appears on the screen is, in my opinion, at risk.

I’ve offered to help them find a solution—because, if I'm right, all they need is LibreOffice and a browser. In that case, I’ll suggest one of the *BSD or Linux systems and do it for free.

I don’t want to make money off my doctor. I just want patient data to be (sufficiently) secure.
