At $JOB accessing to our working server causes to freeze my file browser(s) constantly and it is very annoying. I don't believe my IT staff would ever make something to address it at enterprise level, but maybe I can I ask for a local server that accesses to the remote server, so to get to remote server I land first to the local and it will be this one to get stuck while retrieving the remote information, thus in the meantime I can continue to work without interruption.

So this is a niche one: If you use Moom on macOS (https://manytricks.com/moom/) and you’re on Golden Gate (yeah, I finally upgraded after skipping Tahoe and… I don’t hate it. Which is high praise considering Apple’s recent OS blunders) and you use the “Separate windows by” setting with “Apply to display edges” selected and your menu bar background is transparent and the top gutter appearing larger than the others bothers you (I told you it was niche), then you can use this workaround (courtesy of Rob Griffiths at Many Tricks, who replied to my feature request).

In terminal, to set per-edge gaps:

defaults write com.manytricks.Moom "Grid Spacing: Apply To Edges: Gaps" -string “{7,18,18,18}"

The order is top, right, bottom, left. So the above sets top to 7 and all others to 18, which is how I have it.

(Setting the top to seven leaves a gap of 18px between the top of a window and the baseline of the text on the menu bar, which, for me at least, is optically pleasing. It’s not perfect, not least of all because there doesn’t seem to be any enforced consistency in menu bar icon heights but hey, it’s good enough and definitely better than the default without the tweak. And, yes, welcome to my sad brain. Shit like this does actually bother me.)

There are clearly many reasons why people are switching to Vivaldi. Interestingly, my little survey shows that the top reasons have more to do with our values than particular features.

The #1 reason (77%) is the fact that we do not have built in AI. #2 is that we do not build profiles on our users (67%). #3 is that we are made in Europe. #4 and #5 is that we do not build in Crypto currencies and the built in ad and tracker blocker.

We will continue to listen to our users. We have chosen a different path to our competitors and we continue to try to do the right thing.

I miss OS/2.

My first #Windows was #Win7 because I needed it for a required college course.

When I got my first PC, it was a Zenith running their version of #DOS.

I got a new computer and upgraded to #DRDOS (from #DigitalResearch) and #DesqView, which gave me #multitasking. I ran a #FidoNet #BBS for a few years.

When I got #internet, it was 128k #ISDN because I headed up support for the dialup #ISP I co-owned with a couple other guys. And I shut down the BBS. Somewhere in there, I'd upgraded to OS/2.

And, when #IBM gave up, I put #Debian on my desktop because we used it on the #servers at work.

When #DSL and #cable lured our 24/7 business customers away, we couldn't pivot to consumer internet before we had to close up.

So, I went to school for my associate's degree. And needed to take a #database course, which required #MSAccess, and so my PC was dual boot.

Until #Win10 was forced on me, and I removed the infestation.

I was getting tired of being a proactive #admin, and a friend suggested #LinuxMint.

That's my personal box now, and my school box has #Win11, but it's not actually my box — it belongs to the state.

Folks, I need help. A friend of mine handed me a nearly dead HDD with tons of photos and documents. It's a WD My Passport 500 GB, very old, making funny noises but not too much. Windows sees it, diskpart says file system: raw.
What is the best way of attempting to recover the data? We don't care about the HDD itself, just the files on it.
After some investigation I found GNU DdRescue (needs to load into Ubuntu which is a bit daunting, I have no experience working with Linux Desktop and screen readers really); R-Studio and a couple more pieces of software for Windows.
Any ideas, comments, suggestions are hugely appreciated.

At @Vivaldi, we have chosen to include a lot of features not found in any other Web browser. This includes our mail client, calendar, task manager and feed reader. This is all a part of moving away from Big Tech as you can check your mail and calendar in Vivaldi and gradually move your mail service from Big Tech to one of the many mail services available, but access both from Vivaldi. This is the benefit of keeping the mail server and the mail client separate.

The feed reader is another great feature which allows you to subscribe to your favorite new sources and have them displayed in chronological order.

The calendar works with online services, but can also be used locally.

Salta un pop Up diciendo que ahora puedo usar Copilot para abrir los archivos, directamente desde OneDrive, y pedirle cosas y tal. Lo cierro con un "Más tarde" (patrón engañoso donde los haya).

A los 20 segundos me sale un botón flotante de Copilot con un texto en plan "ey, si quieres usar Copilot está aquí".

Socorro. De verdad, NO quiero, no lo voy a usar, déjame en paz.

Linux n'est pas compliqué.
Par contre, il y a du choix, plusieurs manières de faire. C'est une de ses grandes forces mais forcément ça perd les novices.
D'ailleurs, si on installe une Debian, les choix par défaut conviennent (généralement).
Linux à l'air plus complexe parce qu'une installation inclus l'OS, les drivers, et les applications. Idem pour les mises à jours. C'est bien plus simple qu'avec Windows.

🔒 A 19-year-old cybercriminal was caught despite using a VPN across multiple countries - because Windows has a tracking number built into every install that a VPN can't hide.

Peter Stokes, arrested in Finland in April and extradited to the US last week, is tied to Scattered Spider, the hacking group behind the 2023 MGM and Caesars casino breaches. The group is linked to 100+ intrusions and over $100 million in extortion.

The FBI didn't crack his VPN. Microsoft handed over his Global Device ID (GDID), a unique identifier baked into every Windows installation at setup. It doesn't change when you update, switch networks, or use a VPN. The only way to reset it is a full OS reinstall.

Investigators matched Stokes's GDID across IP addresses in Estonia, New York, and Thailand, correlating with login times on his Snapchat, Apple, and Facebook accounts. The same device that breached a luxury jewelry retailer and demanded $8 million in ransom also logged into Snapchat and a video game from his real network.

So while VPNs mask your IP address, they were never designed to hide device-level identifiers embedded in your operating system. The tracking can live one layer deeper than the one most people defend.

At Opera we built, IMHO, the best browser engine, Presto. It was built from scratch. It aced all the tests. It was lean and fast and could run on just about any hardware. It could even run on hardware where there was not enough memory to keep a full web page in memory, which is how it was able to run on things like mobile phones, game consoles, such as the Nintendo DS and Wii, and TVs. We even made it run effectively on servers, which is how we made Opera Mini. We did that with a relatively small team. It had grown to 100 by the time I left and needed to keep growing by about 10% pr year, at my estimate.

After I left, the idiots running Opera at that time decided to kill Presto and go for Webkit and Chromium. Microsoft made the same move.

When we founded @Vivaldi , we knew that building a browser from scratch is not trivial and we had to do the same as Apple, Google and Microsoft and build on available source. We choose the best one available to us.

We know how to build a browser. Likely better than most as we have been doing this for more than 30 years.

A strong Vivaldi can and will influence the Web in a positive way, like we did with Opera. If you want a better Web, supporting Vivaldi is one of the best ways to achieve that.

My first company, Opera, was built on word of mouth. The same applies to my 2nd company, @Vivaldi. We have never had the means that Big Tech has. In the case of Vivaldi, we have even avoided investors, to not end up like Opera.

We have also made it harder for our selves. We likely could have generated more funds through adding stuff like Crypto, AI or just plain old data collection in the browser, but we choose not to. We are also not an Ad company like most of our larger competitors. Instead we have added a wealth of features and customization.

Now people are starting to understand that just going with Big Tech may be easy to start with, but ends up not being worth it. In fact we now have governments and companies thinking that they need to move away from Big Tech and quickly.

I checked out #OpenSolaris and its descendants over the years. I liked it but the one thing that really held me back from migrating to it (on the desktop) was the small package set. Unfortunately.

It still can't do DoH to an upstream DNS server, but it'll at least encrypt DNS queries within the local network now.

J'aurais bien essayé Tie Fighter Total Conversion, mais à priori, impossible de le faire tourner sous Linux… Dingue ça de nos jours où tout marche mieux que sous Windows !

Bref. Je pourrais m'installer un windows 10/11 sur un disque en rab juste pour ça, mais y a-t-il une méthose simple et propre pour le faire, sans galérer avec un keygen ou un bordel d'activation de licence ? Une image toute prête déja installée par exemple ? J'ai pas touché à Windows depuis XP …

So yeah, apparently the #Windows #Win32 function `CloseClipboard` doesn't actually close the clipboard right away.

There is no guarantee that immediately calling `OpenClipboard` will succeed. Even on the same thread.

Which means mutex locking around `OpenClipboard`/`CloseClipboard` won't work. If there is contention, it'll still fail.

A strategy of “mutex lock, then sleep-and-retry a few times” seems to suffice…
