Linux libvirt qemu: Ich war etwas erstaunt, daß die Konfiguration von vCPU = 8 bei einer Windows 11 Gastmaschine zu nur zwei "logischen Prozessoren" führt. Nach der Änderung von "Netzstruktur" auf Sockets = 1, Kerne = 4 und Threads = 2, klappt es dann auch wie erwartet (und gemäß Doku prognostiziert 😉 aber wer liest schon vorher Doku). Jedenfalls ist diese virtuelle Maschine nun auch wieder schnell.

you may want to keep using your old computer with Windows for this. And then use another computer with Linux for web browser, email, and then slowly move over what you can from Windows to Linux.

From what you've posted, I recommend that you start using Linux as much as you can, but don't try to switch completely from Windows.

Wenn bei einem ansonsten fehlerfreien #Linux-#Manjaro-Update #Firefox upgedatet wird und dabei die Schlüsseldatei der gespeicherten Passwörter gelöscht wird und somit kein Zugriff mehr auf die Passwörter existiert, ist das maximal #Scheiße. Sowas vermiest einem den Umstieg von #Windows unnötig.

Cela dit, renoncer aux réseaux me semble être une décision tout à fait raisonnable pour la majorité. Il suffit d'y aller à son rythme en commençant par le moins douloureux.

Beim Durchscrollen der heutigen Timeline über eine Windows-spezifische Frage gestolpert.

In den Antworten direkt 3 Linux-bros/sis die sich direkt für einen Block qualifiziert haben. Ich frage mich nur warum? Was will man damit erreichen jemandem wegen einem Druckerproblem an einem Laptop, auf dem er ggf. keine eigenen vollen Rechte hat, auch nur irgendein Linuxderivat vorzuschlagen?

Das einzige was ihr erreicht ist, dass ihr als unnütze Trantüten geblockt werdet, weil ihr einfach nur unnötige Scheiße labert nach der niemand gefragt hat. Dann haltet doch einfach den Rand, wenn ihr als kleine Linux-Fanatiker nichts ernsthaft Hilfreiches dazu beitragen könnt, das ist auch eine gültige Option, wenn man von nix anderem 'ne Ahnung hat.

So ein Verhalten regt mich so auf!

Ich war immer schon ein großer Fan von *box-DE - ob unter Wxp, W7 und auch Linux natürlich. Blackbox, bbLean, Fluxbox auf jeden Fall - das war genau meins. Und ist es immer noch. So minimal wie möglich, so funktionsrejch wie nötig. Und da steckt echt 'ne Menge unter der Haube...

Man kann buchstäblich so gut wie alles ändern, stylen und modden, wie es einem beliebt und bis die Schwarte kracht. Kaum eine Funktion, die man nicht per Shortcut erreicht. Extrem effizient und schnell. Ressourcenschonend ist es eh.

Und das klappt immer noch ausgezeichnet - mit Linux etwas einfacher, weil es da nie wirklich eine Pause gab, aber nun auch dank qwilk (wieder) unter W10/11.

PCGH hat sich mal die aktuelle Performance von Nvidia und AMD Graka unter Linux im Vergleich zu Linux angeschaut.

Die Gesamtchart aus den Benchmarks ist für mich als RTX 5090 User ziemlich eindeutig.
Unter Windows erreicht sie fast 100% Leistung, unter Linux nur noch ca. 75€ Leistung.

Damit werde ich fürs Zocken auch zukünftig fürs Erste auf #Windows11 bleiben.
Fast 25% Leistungsverlust unter Linux ist für mich ein zu hoher Trade Off.

Windows 11 is utter shit, but that's not news in Windows world. We remember 98FE, Me, XPsp0, Vista, 8, they were all as bad.

What IS new, is that as of now, Windows 11 is the only supported mainline desktop Windows.

With 98FE, there was 95osr2, with Me, there was 98SE, with XPsp0 there was 2000, with Vista there was XP, and with 8 there was 7.

But with Windows 11 you are stuck now. There is nothing. For the first time since Windows 2.0 launched.

Why the hell are so many people using #Windows 11 on personal computers (personal use)? Even people that absolutely despise AI continue to use it. A little critical thinking would cause one to question why.

Windows 10 support may be "officially" dead, but anyone who can Google would learn of #TSForge, which gives you years of #ESU, and therefore, no reason to use Windows 11 in place of Windows 10.

I have managed to get Windows 10 operating on the latest hardware, including my Strix Halo tablet. I even got the WiFi 7 driver to install.

My PC (or any Linux or Mac in general) is faster than yours, if you're running Windows 11. I can pretty much say that no matter what hardware you have. /r

When I ran #Windows, I had a decent #GPU (the extreme majority was gaming but also to drive multiple displays) but when I moved to #Linux honestly I was content with the integrated GPU or using an old one with the open source driver.

Only on two occasions did I take the time to install the proprietary one.

Now, my main Linux machine is a laptop with a docking station so multiple displays configuration is easy peasy. But I moved in the mid-2000s when Windows didn't offer the multiple workspaces.

I talk a lot about #Measuring things (so one knows if one is doing the right amount of the right thing); but I don’t measure my own use of **all** apps and tools across all OSs! I have some general ideas (and I’ve often talked about how wrong general ideas often are).

I spend most of my time on #Windows (it’s my whole workday). My personal machine is a #Mac. I’ve mentioned before that I use everything everyday. My actual work is split between #CommandLine tools (building things), running the things we’ve built, and web-stuff like document creation, tickets, and the like.

My #TaskManagement software is Mac and iOS only: #Things from #CulteredCode.

I like my total setup; but it’s long past time to measure! Am I doing the right amount of the right things?

Also kam fürs #Homeoffice ein #DECT-Headset von #Yealink dazu. Mit Basisstation, stabil, zuverlässig – eigentlich genau das, was ich gesucht habe. Blöd nur: Eine Basisstation heißt auch, dass man fürs #Büro ein zweites braucht. Also habe ich jetzt zwei davon. Die hat die Firma bezahlt. Zweimal das gleiche, jeweils mit ANC und Mikrophonen die Hintergrundgeräusche aktiv rausfiltern.

Und weil ich schon lange ein #OpenEar-Headset fürs Spazierengehen und #Fahrradfahren wollte, ist danach noch ein #Shokz dazugekommen.

Fazit: Jetzt bin ich zufrieden. Und ich habe gelernt, dass man am PC offenbar wirklich ein dediziertes #Headset nur dafür braucht – alles andere ist Kompromiss. 😉🎧

What is wrong with Windows?!

I keep a small Win partition on my 2022 gamer laptop in case I need to take a cert exam or use a gov website, and I booted it for updating for the first time in 6 months. It took over 6 hours and 6 reboots to update! At one point, it was going bu-ding every minute from random notifications so I had to mute it.

Meanwhile, my 2012 Thinkpad T420 needed a full Fedora version upgrade, and that finished in 15 minutes.

No wonder MS is losing users

I specified that if the generated folder name is too long, truncate it and end it with three dots.

During QA the dots were missing, so I thought the dev missed that requirement.

Turns out #Windows eats the dots, you can't even rename the folder manually -- any dots at the end are eaten, same with whitespace.

This week, The Verge casually dropped a few lines on their podcast that stopped me in my tracks:

“I don’t think our children will grow up in a world where buying a consumer Windows laptop is a thing.”
