My brief experience with Solaris 10 began with a #SPARCstation 20 in 2006ish and a handful of Sun Fire V880 and E4xxx servers in 2015. I am aware those machines were ancient by the time I used them

Solaris is the one #tech I genuinely feel like I missed out on. Not Oracle but Sun.

I checked out #OpenSolaris and its descendants over the years. I liked it but the one thing that really held me back from migrating to it (on the desktop) was the small package set. Unfortunately.

It still can't do DoH to an upstream DNS server, but it'll at least encrypt DNS queries within the local network now.

Die älteseten Modelle, eine #intel 660p und eine #crucial P1 (beide 1TB) sind mit 97% die nvmes mit den Schlechtesten zustand.

J'ai utilisé `netsh trace` pour analyser le trafic sur un serveur Windows, mais seul le fichier .cab a été récupéré.
En faisant une extraction, j'ai un fichier report.etl.

Ce fichier peut être ouvert avec Windows Performance Analyzert, mais comme je suis sur MacOS : j'ai pas.

Est-ce que quelqu'un aurait une idée de comment exploiter ce fichier de mon côté ?

You'll need a couple of USB flash drives for this process. Grab one that's at least 16 GB (install media) and one that's at least 32 GB (data backup). If you're going to be doing this often, you can replace the install media flash drive with an IODD device. I've got one with a 1TB SSD with a bunch of Windows and Linux ISOs, a separate folder for drivers, and a little 1 GB FAT32 partition specifically for holding BIOS updates.

@rl_dane The big issue I have with #Powershell is it's long-winded. Man, there is just so much typing for basic tasks. As cryptic as bash is at least it's succinct.

While I want to acknowledge #Microsoft's efforts to bring shell scripting to the #Windows ecosystem, they definitely missed the point on #usability, #UX, and #cognitive #ergonomics. It really seems like Microsoft abandoned #empathy while developing it.

Even though I don't daily #Microsoft #Windows on real hardware, I do use it from time to time in virtual machines and there's one feature that I have found clunky in Windows for years, basically since they added archive support to explorer directly.

The act of simply extracting an archive on Linux, in most desktop environments, is pretty straight forward. Right click, click "Extract here". It makes a folder with your files in it.

Windows however just has "Extract all".

Omfg, I updated one of my #WIndows VMs and didn't notice when going thru the OOBE for the millionth time that now they've added a toggle that defaults to on, even if you skip/disable everything else, for "Set up my email". If you miss that in your rush to get thru it, when it goes to the desktop it auto launches #Outlook and logs it into your account.

For instance, a friend of mine said he doesn't use Linux because e doesn't want to configure anything. He thinks distros still are those complicated and technical things like in the 90s.

And when he talks about trying Linux, he talks about Ubuntu.

Like him, many people know very little of the Linux world. And that might be why people keep themselves in Windows and Mac.

@eco-g I realised that in general English people are sticking more on big tech platforms than other Europeans.
I see it in my own English family and friends. They’re all on #Facebook , #Instagram, #Twitter, #TikTok. They use it on a daily base. The only messengers in use are #WhatsApp and Facebook messenger.
I tried to bring them over to use #Threema or #Signal instead. No success at all. Not one single contact moved to one of these. Even not as a 2nd option.
I asked them to try #Mastodon instead of Twitter. #Friendica instead of Facebook. #Pixelfed instead of Instagram. #Loops instead of TikTok. No chance. Even the argument that they don’t need to use all of these platforms as they’re all part of the #Fediverse and users on different platforms can interact with each other didn’t work.

Also they’re all using #Windows. Only one is trying to use #Linux now. Stick on the known things seems to matter more than #privacy.

I gave up.

Ich verwende #Linux und unterrichte an einer Hochschule. Die wollen, dass ich #Office365 verwende und Teams. Ab und an haben wir Online-Unterricht.
Es gibt für Linux keinen offiziellen Linux Client als Standalone App. Zumindest habe ich keinen gefunden und der Support der Hochschule wusste nicht, was Linux ist. Also mache ich das alles im Browser. Als ich das das erste Mal machte, war ich geschockt. Meine Eigenüberwachung (Tracking aller meiner Netzwerkverbindungen dank an Little Snitch für Linux) schlug an und an und an. Wieso man für Teams mehrere 100 Netzwerkverbindungen benötigt erschließt sich mir nicht. Ich denke, das ist #Telemetrie und #Überwachung. Danke, Hochschule. Ich vermeide #Google und #MS so gut ich kann.

Today I learned #Windows 11 now comes with tar pre-installed/bundled. I searched up what command you would use to extract an archive on Windows and found "tar" as an answer, so I had to double check. This is one of my VMs and I have not installed tar manually. So "that" is how they've been adding support for new archive formats to Windows Explorer. They've been leveraging tar instead of doing things themselves.

Tl;dr: I have celebrated one year since having switched from #Windows to #Linux by... switching from Linux to OpenBSD my daily driver OS. Why? OpenBSD's "proactive security by default" stance is the best for me - and it runs on my somewhat legacy hardware. Most of the essential software I used on Linux is also here, so for most purposes OpenBSD is fine for me.

My son has Windows 10 on his gaming rig and refuses to go to Windows 11. He wants me to help him get up to speed with Linux on this machine.

He's "just a user" in every stereotypical sense of the computer term so needs help for now. He's away from home for work for five days of the week so I'm hoping I can off-load a lot of the fiddly setup stuff for him.

I'm trying out CachyOS in a VM. The installer looks pretty slick.

I noticed it offers btrfs by default [ ☹️ ] but has zfs as an option [ 😍 ] so let's try that to start. Choosing KDE desktop.

In spite of being a fairly thick 2.8GB install ISO it still seems to download a lot over the wire at install time. Kinda sux on my small, metered, Internet connection.

Would've thought more would be on the media, or get to a first boot scenario before downloading a lot of files. What if install fails after downloading all that stuff over a metered connection?

Installer sits at 19% for a very long time with nothing indicating activity. Looking at the router is showing the traffic.

I'm hoping the rolling release nature of the distro is more "curated" than vanilla Arch.

Ceci étant dit, je trouve qu'on a tendance à surestimer la simplicité des logiciels propriétaires. Je dirais même que dans pas mal de cas, les logiciels libres sont beaucoup plus simples et beaucoup mieux foutus. Un exemple : personnellement, je suis passé à Gnunux en 2007, en remplaçant mon Windows XP par un Ubuntu 7.04. Eh bien une des choses qui m'ont frappés à l'époque, c'était la façon dont était géré le menu pour lancer des logiciels, l'équivalent du menu « Démarrer » des Windows de l'époque. Vous voyez, sur Windows XP, quand vous installiez un logiciel et que vous vouliez ensuite le lancer : il fallait cliquer sur Démarrer, puis Applications, puis trouver le dossier avec le nom de l'éditeur du logiciel – par exemple Adobe pour Photoshop – puis enfin le nom du logiciel. Alors que sur Ubuntu, bah quand j'installais Gimp, l'équivalent libre de Adobe Photoshop, pour le trouver dans le menu, je devais cliquer sur Logiciel, Graphismes. Et Gimp. C'est dingue. Et attendez, hein, quand j'installe un logiciel de bureautique, pareil : je le trouve dans Logiciel, Bureautique. Ceci est une révolution. Eh oui, mais c'est un exemple typique de comment une différence de philosophie fondamentale peut changer quelque chose qui a l'air trivial et qui pourtant rend un système plus ou moins complexe : sur Windows, l'important, c'est que l'éditeur du logiciel puisse afficher sa marque ; sur Gnunux, l'important, c'est que vous retrouviez facilement votre logiciel. La réalité, c'est que

I recently switched to #Linux Mint. I mean, the reasons are obvious so I will save that for a different time. What really struck me was just how easy it was to actually do it. Problems were minor and mainly due to the fact that I have an Nvidia card in my laptop.

Update: problem solved without having to remove the shadows.

Instead of a chroma key, I set the background of my screen to pure black (#000000) and I’m using Luma key. Works beautifully with everything I’ve thrown at it so far in both light and dark mode.

Looking forward to documenting my setup after I finally record that video about Kitten’s new introspection API for the Kitten Shell (REPL).

Yak’s shaved along the way:

• Completely took apart my setup down to every wire and reconfigured it.

Hormis tout le cortège de choses que je reproche à #Microsoft, aux #GAFAM et aux logiciels propriétaires en général, les versions de #Windows que j'ai considérées comme "potables" par le passé ont été :

- Windows 2000 Professionnel (le premier Windows performant et stable de l'histoire)
- Windows XP (dont la phase de maturité est survenue très tardivement)
- Windows 7

Mais cela constitue l'exception, et non pas la règle, qui relève quant à elle de l'immondice le plus répugnant.

➡️ Voir passer quotidiennement des articles, posts et commentaires sur #Microsoft #Windows 11 qui, dès le démarrage, est affreusement consommateur de ressources (notamment de RAM) et tout au tant de "tips" pour essayer de limiter le phénomène ✅

➡️ Être sous GNU/#Linux après démarrage, lancer un moniteur système et voir le CPU en train de faire la sieste et la RAM se poser des questions existentielles ✅

➡️ En rire, tandis que d'autre en pleurent, d'autant plus vu le prix bondissant de la RAM ✅

Sometime around 2017 (IIRC) I got nostalgic for a little "netbook" type computer and decided, for some reason, that an HP Stream 14 would scratch that itch.

These are really low spec machines, even for 2016-2017. It came with Windows 10 and the first Windows Update basically filled the disk and effectively bricked the device. LOL!

I installed Linux on it after that (ofc) but didn't really use it much. So slow....

I was digging around in my service manuals library this evening and stumbled over it in a drawer of files... for some unknown reason it was in the drawer.

I started it up thinking it was still running Arch from back before Covid and might be entertaining to try to get it to update to the present.

Hmm, Alpine 3.21 boots console but sway is installed. Weird, no recollection of doing anything with this machine 12-18 months ago. "I'm not saying it's aliens..."

Ok, Alpine updates to 3.23 without issues. I'm not much of a tiling window manager person so I installed Plasma. Bad idea! With 4GB of ram and an afterthought of a CPU and storage it doesn't run very well at all.

Installed LXQt with labwc and it runs great! Tweaking and themeing to come. (Hi @Tionisla 👋 )

Not sure what I'm going to do with this machine but currently it is pretty usable for simple stuff. Screen and keyboard sucks, pretty close to e-waste. Lesson: ~$200 (retail) laptop is about as good as you would expect a $200 laptop to be. Ha.
