I've been running my own XMPP server (Prosody in Docker) for a few weeks now, alongside my Matrix server and I thought I'd share a few impressions.

What I find fascinating is that you can almost see how the protocol evolved over time. XMPP has been extended for more than two decades and many of those additions are still visible today.

Direct messages and file attachments work well, which is all I really need. I haven't set up group chats or VoIP and honestly, I probably never will.

One thing I underestimated was the setup. Different services often require their own subdomains and I never managed to get file uploads working reliably behind my reverse proxy. Direct messages worked fine, but as soon as I enabled file uploads, everything started breaking. After spending way too much time troubleshooting it, I eventually gave up and exposed Prosody directly instead.

For clients I'm using Conversations on Android and Dino on my Linux desktop, and I've been really happy with both.

It's been fun exploring another decentralized communication protocol.

If anyone wants to test federation or just say hello, feel free to message me :)

On second day of we demonstrated voice and video calls using a local wifi network.

@athulvis @badrihippo and @untrusem did a great job of pulling it together with running on a 500MB ram raspberri pi hanging on the podium of the stage!

WiFi netwok was created on untrusem's phone. Athul logged in via Monocles Chat and one of the participants, Sreedev logged in with Conversations.

It was fun when usb cable was pulled out live from the raspberri pi server.
