🕶️ A side view in which Tux is standing on a pipe waiting for one of Nolok's henchmen to jump over him (or on top of him to crush him), and other henchmen are on the right of the screen, all on a platform overlooking the water, with a mountainous background.

📚️ SuperTux is a libre and multi-platform jump 'n run featuring Tux the penguin, mainly on the pack ice, but also in the woods or caves. In story mode Tux travels on many places to try to rescue Penny, his beloved, kidnapped by Nolok, his sworn enemy, seconded by his minions. Many other maps designed by its users via the integrated editor and downloadable from the interface can be played independently. It is a very neat game with many accessories, bonuses, and enemies, different soundtracks and supporting recent equipment. Excellent!

      Please recommend me a distro!

Long-time Debian Stable user here looking for something, preferably in the Debian family, that has faster updates and ships with KDE & systemd out of the box. Not Ubuntu. It's for a mid-tier laptop.

I could be persuaded to try something arch-based, or Fedora. Wary about NixOS.

Share with me your distro opinions, please!

Interesting that you would choose to use instead of vanilla . I always find myself prefer to go to the upstream distro just to make sure I build the system up form the the ground. For example using I usually go from to install basic minimal system, which is quite similar to the Arch install process.

Wondering when it is the best[1] time to test the to prevent regressions from hitting Linux, Linux, or ?

It's now, as the first pre-release of 6.19 is out – which leaves plenty of time to find, report, debug, and fix any problems that those distros otherwise will encounter when they switch to 6.19.y in about eight to ten weeks. And testing is not even hard, as easy-to-install packages with pre-built mainline kernels exist for all three distros[2].

In case you want to play it a bit safer, delay testing by one week till -rc2 is out – bugs that lead to data loss introduced before -rc1 are extremely rare but will almost certainly have been found and fixed by then.

Anything up to 6.19-rc6 (five weeks from now) is still okayish, but less ideal.

The sixth -rc is your last good chance to test. Linus by then wants all regressions that have become known since the beginning of the 6.19 cycle fixed – but in case some were missed or not reported yet, there is still enough time to report, debug, and fix them before they reach those distros.

Testing any later is often too late: most bugs then can't be fixed anymore before those distros will switch to the 6.19.y series, which will happen within one or two weeks (in the case of Arch and Tumbleweed) or three to four (Fedora) after 6.19 is released.

                        Ok so...

I have a vps ovh with arch installed on it. Problem is : systemd freeze at startup and so the boot sequence fails. I can however still boot in rescue mode and try and fix things up.

I already installed linux-lts and I'm currently booting on it.

I can't find recent logs. Does anybody have a few pointer to help me fix this?

My best guess is the problem is somehow linked to systemd or a missing firmware package, but since I can't find the startup logs I don't know what to try.

Taken abstractly, nix is a build system. Nixpkgs has arch-install-scripts and debootstrap. Using these tools, it is possible to build a rootfs that can be turned into an installable iso. It follows therefore, that nix could be used to build and manage highly custom builds of upstream distros like Debian and Arch without actually booting into a VM in order to do it.

In this regard, Linux is a snake eating its own tail, but I wonder if this could be used for something besides just as a curiosity.

I imagine there's some gremlins in there to be found. But it could be cool to use nix to just spawn preconfigured distros that aren't even NixOS.

paldo is a Upkg driven GNU/Linux distribution. It's kind of a mix of a source and a binary distribution. Even though it builds packages like a source distribution it provides binary packages.

                                  paldo.org/index-section-suppor

paldo stands for "pure adaptable linux distribution" and they try to accomplish this in every package.

                                                          I freaking hate .

I just updated (with Arch updates), and now no apps load. loads, but Terminal, Gedit etc don't load.

That has been my experience with Arch & Arch-based distros: every few weeks, you gotta deal with unforeseen problems.

That's why I prefer Linux . It just works. I don't spend time dealing with things I should NOT be dealing with. If I want a rolling release, there's Debian-Testing which is very stable.
